Pale light swirled down through high windows, dust spiraling through the beams before vanishing in the air. Below, dark wood shelves lined the walls, curving slightly to fit along the slightly rounded walls. Thick books, bound in leather, with golden gilding down the side, weighed down the shelves, in many cases also bearing a load of dust and cobwebs. The lower library housed the old texts, many of them with faded writing and bloated pages, showing signs of neglect. Visitors were few, mostly scholars seeking a specific book for reference or lost visitors hoping to find their way back to their room. The girl illuminated in one of the beams, however, was the only one to visit regularly.

Lips moving silently as she attempted a particularily difficult bit of translation, Princess Emiko Misaki de Medlimar twirled a pale pink strand of hair around one finger, staring intently at the huge yellowing book sitting before her on the table. This area alone was dust-free, although some clung to the edges of the book the princess was engrossed in. The girl was dwarfed by the armchair she sat in, which she had dragged over from the other side of the room some time ago.

Emiko was relaxed in this room, probably the only time she ever was. No one bothered her here, probably because she went to some lengths to avoid letting her maids, the only ones who sought her out regularly, know where she went. She knew that others knew, but as long as the three girls who waited on her were kept in the dark, she could read alone. Originally, the allure of this room lay in its privacy, and in its mystique. After a while, though, Emiko had discovered a love for these books, and all the knowledge they could impart. She had read almost all of the books written in her native tounge, and after a year or more of studying, she had puzzled out how to read many of the others, which were written in an older form of that dialect, sharing a few words, but not many.

Now, she stood slowly, slipper-clad feet taking her weight after a long period of rest, skirts falling into place with a swishing of the cloth, pink curls swinging. She closed the book, leaving it on the table, and walked slowly towards the door. She brushed lingering bits of dust from her skirts as she stepped out the door.

Walking down the hall, she listened for approaching footsteps. As she hurried up the stairs, she hoped she wouldn't have to see her mother today. Her frustration and anger were freshly aroused by what she had read, and she stalked down the halls, as well as a short, pink-haired girl in frothy pink and white skirts could.

Walking down the halls, Emiko slowed as she reached one of the large windows dotting the upper reaches of the castle. Standing on her tiptoes, she rested her pale arms on the window ledge, peering out over the landscape. From this height, all ofthe impurities disappeared, leaving a beautiful tapestry-like swirl of colors. She sighed in contentment, resting her chin on her folded hands, admiring the view. "If only it was as beautiful as it looked," she murmured, to softly for anyone to hear, if there had been anyone about.

After a few minutes of gazing out, she heard soft footsteps approaching quickly. She backed away from the window quickly, turning in a swirl of pink, and continued down the hall. I'm not even comfortable in my own home, she thought wryly. It was at points like this that she couldn't help thinking about her mother, and how the lone person related to her in this great palace possibly hated her.

Chin up, she turned the corner, her eyes not betraying her distress. Just as she swung around the corner, however, she ran smack into another person, stumbling back and tripping over nothing, falling back and landing with a thump. Sitting on the floor, she looked up, startled, as she tried to smooth her hair and skirts simultaneously.

There was a light clank of metal armor when the princess bumped into Raiz. He did not budge when she bumped into him, and from where she sat, he slowly turned his masked face to her. The dark eye slits made it impossible to see even the Dark Knight's eyes as he regarded her in silence for a moment. He was in his usual armor, except a black cloak covered most of his body, obscuring it from view. All that was visible through the front of the cloak was his wrapped hand upon the hilt of one of his blades.

He stood casually, yet perfectly still from when she had bumped into him. Whether or not he had his hand on his blade before or after the contact was impossible to tell. After a moment, the hand came off the hilt of the wicked blade, which vanished back under his cloak and he turned to face the princess, then leaned over and extended that same hand to where she was sitting and fretting with her dress. "Her ladyship should not idly wander the castle without escort. Times are not so safe as they once were." Despite what would have been friendly words of warning, his voice carried an icy tone that sapped the emotion from the words, leaving them cold and threatening.

"Is her ladyship on an errand? It was my understanding that royal ladies had plenty to occupy their time." His intent and meaning behind the words was difficult to fathom with his cold, neutral tone, and his fully-hidden face. Whether he was was genuine, or teasing her, or threatening her was all but impossible to tell.

Stifling the desire to take a step back- or even better, turn and walk away, Emiko raised her chin in proud defiance. “I am the next in line to the throne, but I expect it will be many years before I do ascend the throne. My mother will rule for a long time yet. Until then, I am not important.” She didn’t say that she had doubts as to whether she would ever gain the throne, there was always the possibility of an ‘accident.’ Until she was queen, her life was in far less danger if she stayed quietly in the background.

“I do believe I am safer here, fading into the background, than if I go everywhere with a guard and draw attention to myself. I doubt anyone even thinks about me much, and that is how I prefer it.” It was the closest she would ever come to saying that she was safer out of the queen’s view than in it. “And if someone were to try and harm me, they would have to find me first. These back halls are probably safer than my rooms,” she pointed out. “But if you are truly that concerned, you may walk me to my rooms. If not, feel free to go about your business.” She took a few steps forward, pausing when she was next to him. “And thank you for your concern.”

Raiz considered the Princess and her words for several moments. Of course, he had very different opinions of her current situation, but he was not about to argue the point with the Princess either. "Her ladyship knows best, I'm sure. It has kept her alive thus far." He said, inclining his head to the Princess once more. He did not move from his spot as she spoke, and gave no response that suggested he was even listening to her, but when she moved past him to continue down the hall, he turned and followed on her flank silently, save for the slight rustling of his cloak.

"I must admit my curiosity, your ladyship." He said silently, his voice an icy whisper. "You are very different from Her Majesty. You do not seem to want for power. Perhaps you seek to be different from Her Majesty." His words did not carry the suggestion of a question, but sounded more like statement, as if he were reciting facts. He did not look at her as he walked with her, his helmet faced forwards under his hood and his arms were unseen under his cloak, as if he were just floating alongside her.
