Royal Occiden Family Gardens

"Tiris!? I know your here somewhere, I saw you come this way." Kaine called, leaning against the garden gate. He knew quite well that his little brother was trying to avoid him. "I hear there's a princess searching for you by name, she's taken up residence somewhere on these grounds. Won't you come to greet her?" It was a lie of course, the only princess around here who might be looking for Tiris was their own sweet sister Terin, and he hadn't seen her all day.

Tiris ignored his brother as he made his way deeper and deeper into the gardens, he knew Kaine would say just about anything to lure him out, he'd fallen for it too many times to count already, he also knew that Kaine was simply looking for a way to dispel his boredom. If Tiris came out, he'd in for an avalanche of teasing, stupid jokes, and pain as Kaine entertained himself at his expense.

So, Tiris kept quiet and finally slipped trough a small opening in a hedge. The opening was nondescript and easily overlooked and behind it was a small, long forgotten, private garden that Tiris had fallen into by accident just the other day. He loved it, and as of yet, no one (especially his brothers) had managed to find him there.

There was a nice bed of moss, covering most of the ground in the small enclosed space. A shady tree kept out most of the sun, and beautiful flowers lent a pleasant scent to the garden. Tiris laid down on the moss and watch the way the sunlight played through the branches of the tree. The weather was very pleasant, cool, but not cold. The dreaded snow had gone away and left behind the sun and the wonderful scent of wet earth and growing things. The only thing that could ruin his mood would be if someone were to show up, right there in his new hideaway.

By now (he hoped) Kaine had probably already given up and gone to find something else to occupy his time, maybe Osirin had happened by and they were now sparing in the practice field. Or maybe their sister had run into Kaine and had found something for him to do. Tiris didn't really care either way, so long as they all stayed away from this place.

Occidens

Terin walked along the halls of the castle. She was wondering where her brother, Tiris was. She expected him to be off somewhere. She stared out of the large window, sighing at the beautiful day. She was at the library, playing chess with her tutor. She won again. It had become boring after two minutes.

She passed a few servants before going out to the Family Gardens. She sat there admiring the view and for some reason, her mind drifted to a certain Prince of Voreia. Se giggled happpily at the thought.

The Queen's City

As Aryel walked along the Queen's city, little did she know Aria was following. She knew her unfortunate way of leaving so easily. She followed cautiously behind, hearing Rathbone once in a while. When she got in the pub, she heard a man telling about the great Rathbone. She rolled her eyes, expecting him to be Rathbone himself. She sat herself behind them and watched the scene unfold, her hood covering her face.

Once he left, Aria went to Aryel. She sat next to her, "So how was running away again?"

The Royal Occiden Family Gardens

Kaine finally got tired of waiting as he realized, Tiris wasn't coming out. So, still bored, he decided to go search for him.
Unfortunately the family gardens were huge, Tiris could have been anywhere. Kaine gave up in less than an hour, it just wasn't worth it. As he started heading back, he spotted his little sister and walked over to her.

"Terin! Sweet sister! I'm afraid this infernal garden has swallowed up our dear brother Tiris. I know he came in here but I can't find any sign of him, have you seen him by chance?"

Tiris made an irritated face to no one in particular, so he hadn't given up afterall? Well that was all fine and dandy, but did he and Terin have to be so close to his hideaway? Hearing Kaine's voice was taking all the pleasure from the experience. And much as he loved his sister deeply, did she really have to choose right there?

The Royal Occiden Family Gardens

Terin's unfortunate dream was ended by Kaine. She sighed, "No but I think I heard father calling you," That was a lie but she wanted him to leave so she could have her own peace. She bit into her red apple, chewing it and swallowing in a moment's time. She stood up from her seat, spotting a red rose from the flower beds. She walked over to it. She picked it up, careful not to prick her on its thrones.

She admired it so lovingly. It was beautiful, dark red and smelled sweet. She suddenly thought of Princess Aimi, she was a rose. she thought sadly. Arkyn would love her even if he just saw her beautiful face. He wouldn't think of her, she was more of a weed.

She started to pick the rose petals one at a time, "He loves me, he loves me not," she chanted as each petal fell down on the green grass.

The rose petals were all on the ground, Terin held just a thorny stem. She thought it looked perfect for her. She sighed as she stared at it, "He loves me not," she mumbled. She dropped the stem on the ground and crushed it with her heel.

She bit into her apple again as she walked to the bench. Maybe she was overreacting, she was a princess but then again, she wanted more. More adventure, more books to read, more chess players to beat.

Occidens Castle, an upper chamber.

A large, aged map was sprawled over an even larger and more ancient oak table. Thick black ink, dulling only now in its later years, crawled over the map this way and that, spider-webbing off in every direction, forming provinces, borders and rivers. In elegant script were written the names of every city, every town and every village, every important land mark and anything else of note. This was an important map. This was a map of the known world. Shadows danced over and over the surface of the map, candlelight and torchlight doing their best to illuminate as much of the large room in which the map was being debated over. All around the table stood men of various importance in the kingdom of the West. They wore the armour of generals and soldiers, the robes and badges of office of the advisors and councilmen and all were bickering back and forth with each other. The noise was a cacophony of defended opinions, slamming fists and thinly veiled insults. The War with the Southern Kingdom had barely begun and the West was already chewing upon itself. For a moment, there was calm and two men began to speak.

"You're an idiot then, if you think that you can just march through that open plain and expect them to not place ambush points here, here and here." An armoured general, scarred and bearded, spoke forcefully, his finger thrust plainly upon the map. Small figurines depicting different units within the Western and Southern armies had been placed in their supposed positions upon the map and were being adjusted and re-adjusted as the war council continued.

"I may not have as many scars as you do, Sir General, but, I, too, have raised a blade or two in battle and I realize the truth in what you're saying. But, if you could just look towards the bigger picture... " A councilman offered, his facial hair trim and his eyes narrowed. He had been steadily rising the political ranks in the Western Kingdom for some time now and his mind was as sharp as his tongue.

"Damn you and damn your bigger picture! We're focusing on this assault right now. I would lose hundreds of men in those ambushes, needlessly, just to gain hardly an inch of ground! How about we armour you up and send you out there to lead and see how well YOU do?" The General retorted, his face flooding red with his frustration. More soliders spoke up, offering strategies and recollections of their triumphs and of the politicians inaction. The chamber descended into chaos once more. Every man in the room, from the highest general to the lowliest of servants stood in this room. Everyone except for one man.

King Garro Tylurian Occidens sat upon a large chair, elevated upon a plinth so that it could look down upon the map, as a bird looks down upon the fields over which it flies. He sat with a sneer on his face, his lips curled cruelly. Even sitting down, he was an imposing looking man, his muscles coiled for an attack at any moment. His hair, darkest black and greasy half hung over his eyes, and with the orange glow of the fires, gave his face a shadowed and intimidating look. A half drunk goblet of wine stood upon one of the arms of his chair, waiting to be consumed. He was quiet, for the moment, though the irritation from which he suffered at the hands of all these gathered men was easy to see. He reached for his sword, never far away, and gripped the pommel tightly. The sword remained in its scabbard, as was his intention, and he thumped the end of the scabbard upon the ground at his side four times. Every man in the room froze, further debate stopped before it could leave their lips. The King eyed each man in turn, from advisor to general, before returning his eyes to the map once more.

"We take it all."

"Yes, of course father, but we must take it all piece by piece. Is this not a discussion on how we are going to take this piece in particular?" The question his son asked rankled, stinking of a lack of confidence in his father. He could read the puzzlement upon his boy's face, his hand outstretched toward the map upon the table. The other men around the table looked on, half of them wishing they had the balls to question a statement of the King and the other half terrified of any kind of retribution were they to make any sort of noise at this moment. As with most meetings with the King, his brooding presence and glowering looks always served to create a thick tension.

"Do you take me for a fool, my son?" King Garro asked Osirin, leaning forward in his chair, his hand still gripping the pommel of his sword. "Is this my first war council? Is that wetness I feel behind my ears?" He offered, using his other hand to pretend to rub behind one of his ears. "Of course this is a discussion about pieces of land and of this piece in particular. This piece in particular," He said, gesturing towards the map, "Is of only half the importance of the next piece beyond it, and of only a quarter the importance of the piece beyond that. I would send as many men to their deaths as I need to in order to accomplish the final goal. Guarantee me the victories you've had in the past and I would send you to do this task." The King reached for his half empty goblet of wine and took a quick sip. "What all of you gathered here are doing is considering the two options. One, assault the plains and be ambushed, lose men but still win the day. Two, travel around the plains, avoid the ambush and lose precious time, thus allowing the Southern Kingdom to regroup and mount an attack on us." The King leaned back then, replacing his cup upon the arm of his chair.

"Option three. Send a third of the forces gathered for the assault on the plains down the middle to draw out the ambush. On both sides, I want the rest of the army to come around and close up behind the would-be ambushers. Crushing them." He said forcefully, closing his open hand into a curled fist. "Do this, and do this quickly, and we will have more... 'pieces'," he said with thinly veiled disgust, "Under my control."
