Jewel Liadon

"Life would be so much easier without all this fighting...wouldn't it?"

0 · 1,485 views · located in Varnaya

a character in “Take Back the World”, as played by Crystal Flamedance

Description

Image

Jewel is an elf with green hair with light golden eyes, with pale skin. Her hair ends just past her waist, and is fairly straight. At 6', she stands a little shorter than some of the other elves. She is also fairly slim, and prefers to wear pants along with a long sleeved shirt, both a little tight, to allow for easier movement. Both are also a darker color, as she prefers to wander at night. She about 1100 years old, fairly young for an elf.

Jewel is peaceful, like the rest of her race. She likes to take walks at night, when most others are asleep and everything is much quieter. She doesn't often talk much to strangers, though that can often depend on the situation. Sometimes it just can't be helped, after all. She is not typically easy to scare off, and likes a good adventure. Confrontation, however, she avoids actively. She doesn't fight too well, and while she's not fond of the humans, she doesn't think it's overly necessary. There are plenty of other elves that can fight, and that really isn't even her strong suit, anyway.

She likes music...listening to it, anyway. She can play the flute, but is easily embarrassed, and doesn't think she'd very good at it. She loves a good adventure, and loves to scout out the humans. Granted, her race is peaceful, so she only keeps an eye out for armies marching on her home, but it allows her to roam a little. She also prefers being out in nature than being confined in buildings. Caves are okay, but buildings and houses are not. She also likes watching and playing with animals.

She can't stand absolute silence. Even at night, she needs to hear something; an owl, a breeze, something. There has to be at least a little noise for her to be happy. She also has a great fear of being burned. As it is, even camp fires bother her, though she knows they're necessary for cooking, keeping warm, and light. She tried to keep her distance when she can. She doesn't like humans, like most of her race, despite the little curiosity she has towards them. She believes them to be violent and obnoxious. The one thing she absolutely hates, though, more than silence or fire or humans, is violence. No, humand and elves don't get along and she herself doesn't like humans, but wouldn't everything be easier if they just lived separately, in peace?

Jewel doesn't typically carry much, unless she's travelling. And even then, everything fits in a small bag. Usually, it's only necessary supplies; a little food, flint and tinder, and, usually, a map. She keeps a small knife on her at all times, though she doesn't use it often. She's much better at scouting than anything else, and she likes it that way. She thought it was much easier than learning to use a weapon properly.

Jewel grew up near the edge of the forest, but was continuously warned by her parents to never get too close to the edge, and especially not to go near the humans. She watched them, though, curious enough to try to figure out what they were up to. She learned later on, as she grew up, that the humans really were no good. She had heard about the dragons, too, but wasn't sure whether or not it was truth. After all, she had never seen them for herself. Nearly everything she knows, she learned from her parents.

Generally, her life was fairly simple, keeping to the forest and avoiding the humans. She has learned everything she needed to in order to survive in the forest; to hide from predators, forage for food, and find shelter for nights away from home. She was trained to be a survivalist more than anything, and uses that often when she goes out to scout human civilizations. She has a younger brother, and still takes advice from her parents, but otherwise she now prefers to live away from them. Mostly, she is either scouting what is believed to be a human army, or wandering through the forest, taking in the sites, or looking for a place to make camp.

So begins...

Rhitarion found himself, as always, in his Elven form. After two thousand years of having to stay in this awful form, he'd grown tired of it. He longed to be able to shift into his true form. To be able to spread his wings and rule the skies as he was meant to. He could not though. He knew the importance of his current situation. The Elves and Humans needed to realize that they needed each other. It pained his heart to think of how the two races were at war with each other. It was madness. Rhitarion did not foresee the war ending until one of the races were completely killed off. Shaking his head, the young Dragon looked around. Where am I? he thought, his bright crimson eyes taking in his surroundings. He was in a giant forest. If his memory served him correctly, this was the Old Woods. The only forest that had not been taken by any race. He'd be safe here for some time before he'd have to move on.

The Old Woods' trees were giant. Even if Rhitarion was in his true form he could have walked through without any trouble. The young Prince wondered what would happen to the forest if the Humans and Elves continued on fighting. Who would claim it? These were things that really shouldn't matter to him. Yet..he did care. Shaking his head slightly, he continued on through the Woods. The early morning light was shining through the green leaves of the trees, giving the forest floor an eerie glow. Rhitarion's black hair shone in the light, moving as he walked. Rhitarion could hear no animals as he walked. It was something that he was fairly used to now. He could recall when he'd first arrived in the Lower Lands. He'd found it odd that the creatures of the world found him a threat. In Ialeos, the creatures that lived there among the Dragons had known they were not a threat and didn't care to be so close to the large creatures. He suddenly felt a surge of sadness as he thought about his home. He decided that perhaps it would be best if he did not think about such things. He didn't need to be thinking of the one place in Varnaya that he couldn't go.

Rhitarion continued on until coming to a large sparkling river that ran through the Woods. This would be a good place to rest. He'd been walking for some time now and was quite tired. He gently sat his small pack down near a large rock but decided to keep his sword attached to his belt. You never knew when someone would attack. He'd rather be prepared. He approached the Kaluna River and crouched to drink from it's cool waters. He kept his senses alert. Finishing with his drink, he stood. Looking out as far as he could see in the Old Woods, he wondered if this would possibly be a good campsite. He returned to the rock that he'd sat his bag near and sat. He closed his eyes, opting to rest before beginning to set up camp.

As Rhitarion sat there, he could feel the slight chill that was now in the air. It was only mid afternoon but the seasons were beginning to change. Fall was upon them and Rhitarion knew that this meant that he would soon need to venture into one of the Elven cities to stock up on supplies. He always hated having to blend in with beings that he resembled. His eyes and darkly colored hair usually caused him to stand out. He sighed softly, not looking forward to the journey into civilization. Suddenly, his ears picked up on a soft noise. Instead of moving, he remained still, eyes closed. He couldn't tell right off what the noise was or what it had come from. He knew that it was no animal therefor it had to be either a Human or an Elf. If he had to guess, Rhitarion would say that it was an Elf. Going against his better judgment, the Dragon remained sitting. In that moment, he didn't care if someone found him. He was tired. So tired of the hiding and the lies.

Jewel took a deep breath. She was in a really good mood now. She hadn't seen many people in a while. While she liked being alone a good deal of the time, though, she knew she was bound to long for some company at some point. But, for now, she'd be okay. After all, there were plenty of animals she could watch and talk to, even if they wouldn't talk back. ...I'f I'm thinking of talking to the animals...maybe it is time I looked for a bit of company... she thought, glancing around. She shook her head, pausing to listen.

It was fairly quiet, but she liked that there was at least a little bit of sound. The birds made the most sound, but there were other small animals to talk to each other and run around. Every now and then a small breeze would move the plants to make a bit of sound all their own. It was very peaceful. She loves days like these; there was nothing she absolutely had to do, and she would wander around. For once, she didn't have to worry too much about anyone else bothering her.

Suddenly there was silence. Everything went quiet; even the breeze seemed to stop for whatever danger the animals sensed. She froze as soon as she realized everything was absolutely quiet. She glanced around warily. Whatever they were frightned of, it had to be nearby. They had stopped so suddenly; clearly whatever it was they considered to be a very real and dangerous threat. She bit her lip, wishing she had kept the knife on her belt instead of in the bag on her back. It was so much harder for her to reach if she was suddenly attacked! Well...I guess it couldn't last too long...

She slowed her progress to a creep, eyes darting around warily, looking for any sign of danger. Nothing stood out immediately, though, so she continued. This time, though, she continued at a creep. She would hate to rush into a situation she couldn't get out of. What could possibly scare everything in the forest? She paused, seeing a small clearing up ahead. She took a deep breath and headed for it. It looked like someone had made camp there, and while she appreciated being alone, she didn't really want to be alone all the time. She made sure to walk slowly into the area, offering a small smile to the man there.

"...I'm sorry for intruding. I'm just a little lost." It wasn't a lie, she just hadn't really cared much that she was lost. Besides, he looked like an elf; an ally. Sure his hair was a little dark for an elf...well, really dark for an elf, but it happened sometimes. Perhaps this wouldn't be too bad.

Sitting there upon the large rock, the Dragon heard the being come through to the clearing. He slowly opened his eyes, and turned his head so that he could properly see the being that had happened upon him. It was a female Elf. One that seemed to have been traveling by herself. It was strange during these times to see a young woman by herself. It..intrigued him. When she spoke, the Dragon focused his intense gaze upon her young face. "...I'm sorry for intruding. I'm just a little lost." Hearing her words, Rhitarion found himself smiling at the Elf. "It is quite all right, M'lady." he said with his heavily accented voice, slowly standing from his seat. The Dragon realized at that moment that she was a good couple of inches shorter than himself. He slowly moved a bit around, standing so that there was nothing between the two. Placing a hand over his heart, he slightly bowed to the young woman, a sign of utmost respect. "I am Rhitarion." He rose from his bow, eyes never leaving the female. He chose not to ask for her name, assuming that if she wished to give it she would. He knew that perhaps he should not be eyeing her so intently, but he could not help it. It had been some time since he'd been around another being. Too long in his mind. "I can't help but wonder, why you are alone and in the Woods? They are quite dangerous..even for a skilled warrior this place can be treacherous."

Rhitarion knew that the Elf could ask the same of him but what answer could he truly give. He hated lying unless it was necessary and in this case he almost felt as if he should be honest with her. There was, however, only so much that he could tell her without causing himself trouble. Dragons were forbidden from telling Humans or Elves what they were. Doing so and being found out would result in severe punishment from the ruling Dragon, Rhitarion. In his case, it would be his mother doing the punishing. Something that Rhitarion did not wish to have happen. Instead, the young Elf would need to say out loud what he was. Until then, he would have to play the part of a Elf. How badly he longed for the female to discover what he was. He wondered if she had even heard of his kind and if so would she believe that he was a Dragon? These were all things that he really needn't be worrying about right then.

Focusing his gaze back onto the Elf, the Dragon couldn't help but wonder if she had noted his odd eyes or his teeth yet. "You said that you are a bit lost. Perhaps I can help you with that, if you wish." he said, silently debating with himself. He needed to watch what he said to the woman. Rihtarion didn't need to be dropping hints as to the fact that he was not a Elf as the woman before him saw him as. "I, myself, am a wanderer. I never stay in one place for too long. I have found that I prefer this.." He motioned to the giant trees that surrounded the clearing, "To that of the cities of the world. I prefer traveling alone. The reason I travel alone," the Dragon said, "Is because I find it easier to be alone. I have found that there are those who would gladly join me, though not because they wish to share in my company. I would rather be alone than be surrounded by fools." He watched the female Elf for her reaction. Why was he being so open with this Elf? He was not sure. Perhaps after being in the Lower Lands for such a very long time he was finally reaching a point in his life that he was longing for companionship.

Jewel hesitated as he bowed and introduced himself. She hadn't seen many men being so polite. Though this seemed a little past polite; very formal, in fact. That wasn't to say she didn't enjoy that kind of respect; she just wasn't sure it was really deserved. They had just met, and he knew as little about her as she did about him. She allowed her smile to widen a little, rather than the shy little smile she had before. His gaze, she noticed, never left her, and that unnerved her just a little bit. But really, if he was so polite to her, how much did she really have to worry? Besides, the red eyes made her a little more curious. She gave a brief, awkward curtsy. She clearly had never done that before.

"My name is Jewel. I was just taking a little trip on my own. ...Well...more like looking to relocate." She frowned for a moment before shaking her thoughts off. She had hoped to find herself away from all the fighting, from the war, and from being a scout looking for a reason to predict a fight. But she shouldn't be thinking about that; she was far enough away that she wouldn't have to put up with it. No need to bring up unpleasant conversation while he was being so courteous.

She listened patiently as he talked about himself. Perhaps he needed company as much as she did. Maybe that made this encounter a good thing. In any case, she decided she had no real reason to be lying to him. Not only was there a possibility to make him mad if he found out, but it didn't seem fair. He had been rather open with her, after all. She allowed the smile to show up on her face again. She glanced up at the sky as she replied.

"I'm only travelling alone because everyone else seemed so...absorbed in this stupid war. At least, in places like these, there are no other people to kill each other." She paused and looked back to him.

"I appreciate the offer, but quite honestly I think I could use the company. Would you mind too much if I travelled with you? I'll do my best to not be annoying," she added with a grin.

Rhitarion finally tore his gaze from Jewel. He listened intently as the female spoke to him. When she had finished speaking, the Dragon spoke. He was silent for a moment, eyeing the river that lay to his side. "Most of those that are from the Lower Lands are only concerned with the War. It is rare to come across someone that is not so intently focused on their opposite race's demise. It is..refreshing." He fell silent for a moment, debating about her latter statement. He could not understand why she would want to join him. She had just met him..she knew nothing about him and yet here she was willing to travel with him. Could he allow her to join him? How long would his charade last with her spending every waking minute with him? He would have to keep his movements in check, make sure that she didn't notice him doing something faster than possible for any Elf or Man. He would also have to make sure that he kept speaking as a Elf would. There was also the danger of one of his kind finding out and assuming that he'd told her what he was. Jewel would be placed into danger just by traveling with him. Could he live with himself allowing her into the danger? The right thing for him to do would to tell her from the start what he was. Unfortunately, he couldn't do that.

Rhitarion returned his gaze to the female. "If that is what you truly wish, you may join me." He offered her a smile, revealing his sharpened canines. Though they were not extraordinarily long nor did they stand out too awfully bad, the Dragon felt strange smiling. He always did when he was speaking with the other races. He was always afraid they would notice and start asking questions. Generally, he needn't worry about Humans. They were too concerned with themselves to pay much attention to the little things around them. It was the Elves, however, that had proven the most observant. It was why most of his kind had taken to wandering the world. Less chance of being found out.

The Dragon slowly turned away from Jewel and then made his way across the clearing, stopping in the middle. "I'm afraid that I have been traveling for some time without rest. If it is all right with you, we can remain here for a day or so." Rhitarion threw another smile at Jewel. "I will fix us a fire pit if and gather wood. It will take me much less time than if you were to do it." After he'd spoken, Rhitarion realized that perhaps his statement may have come across as a bit on the rude side. He could not take it back now, however. He simply smiled at Jewel in the hopes that she'd realize that he'd not meant it as it had sounded. He slowly began gathering stones and placing them in a circle on the ground. Once he was finished, he rose from the crouch he was in. "I'll be back momentarily." With that, the Dragon slowly made his way into the Woods, leaving Jewel alone for a moment.

When he was certain that she could not see him from the campsite, Rhitarion took off running through the Woods, gathering as much wood as he could carry. He made his way slowly back to the campsite, entering and his gaze falling to Jewel once again. He'd not taken too awfully long, maybe only a minute or two. He gently placed the wood down away from the pit. "This should do us at least until in the morning." The Dragon went about starting a fire in the hopes of warding off the chill that was setting in. He knew that he was probably feeling it a bit worse than Jewel. Though his kind breathed fire, they could loose their body temperature very quickly. Rhitarion hated feeling cold. It was something that he normally tried to avoid. At last, the flames came to life and the Dragon sat down near the warmth. "So tell me, M'lady, of yourself. It is not everyday that I am able to speak with one of your kind, I'm afraid. I am curious by nature, I will apologize before hand for any of my inquiries. You have but to tell me if I ask something that you do not wish to discuss." Suddenly, the Dragon realized his mistake. He'd referred to her kind as something completely separate from himself. Rhitarion couldn't help but wonder if Jewel had caught it. He should hope that she hadn't but yet something in him almost wished that she had. Either way he was glad that he'd accepted her as a traveling companion.

Jewel shrugged. She didn't mind staying there a day or so. After all, he said he was tired. A break certainly couldn't hurt. Besides, she had asked to join him, not the other way around. She couldn't be rude and insist they keep moving. There was no reason to push the issue. She glanced around when he left, thinking as she did. She was glad he had allowed her to join him; it was much better than being lonely all the time. It sounded like he was about as fond of the war as she was, which she figured was good. They wouldn't have to spend too much time talking about it. That was the whole point of her leaving home, after all. She paused to think hard, though, staring absently into the river.

That smile was probably the most interesting she had seen. She had thought before, when he had been talking, that something had seemed a little off. Canines weren't usually that pronounced in either humans of elves. Was it possible he was something else, then? But what if she were wrong? What if she had imagined things? That wasn't exactly normal of her, to imagine things, but what else could it have been?

She was pulled away from those thoughts as Rhitarion returned, carrying wood. She would have expected it to take longer than that, but it seems he was right. He could gather the firewood faster than she could. She wouldn't have believed it in any other situation. She moved to sit a little closer to the fire; nights got cold, and the last thing she needed was to freeze to death. And it did look like enough to last until the morning. That was good; they wouldn't have to wander around in the dark looking for more.

She listened in silence as he started talking again, and paused before answering. One of...her kind? Her mind went back to the fangs, but she forced herself to keep her questions to herself. He wasn't pushing any sort of information on her; it wouldn't be right to do that to him. She gathered her thoughts before offering a reply.

"Hmm...I guess it would depend on what you wanted to know. There really isn't too much. I stayed in the forest, did what I was told...used to be a scout for the elves, but really...it just pulled me into more messes than I'd like..." She paused and shrugged.

"I'm not sure exactly what it is you want me to tell you. But I think I'll have a few questions for you, too. I'm a little curious, too, you know." She'd wait, though, before asking him what he was; she'd have to find a place to start that was much simpler. Much less suspicious. But she was really itching to know what it was that he was. Elves don't have pointed teeth, red eyes, or consider another elf a different "kind." Her first thought was the stories she had heard from her parents; the dragons. However, she brushed that thought off. Dragons couldn't exist. He had to be something else...right?

He listened as Jewel spoke, his eyes completely focused on her. When she was finished speaking, he remained silent for a moment. Suddenly, the young woman spoke again. This time when she was finished, Rhitarion tilted his head to the side slightly, regarding Jewel for a short moment. "I will answer any of your questions, if I am able." the Dragon said. He pulled his gaze from Jewel, content with staring into the flames of the fire. As he sat there, Rhitarion couldn't help but feel a deep longing in his chest. It had been so very long since he'd released his full powers. The ability to breathe fire was something that all male Dragons had. Rhitarion couldn't even remember the last time that he'd been able to release the flames that he held within his body. He doubted that he would be able to do such a thing for a very long time. Rhitarion could not foresee the Humans and Elves getting along.

For the entirety of his time in the Lower Lands, Rhitarion had never before seen any of the two races get along. Even the younglings..or children as the other races called them fought with each other. It..saddened him to think about. The way that the world seemed to be in such utter chaos without his kind ruling over the world. Rhitarion had not understood his father's decision at first. He'd been raised to believe that his kind was the superior race. Beings that were above all others. Now, sitting there with Jewel, Rhitarion was only just beginning to understand his father's decision. It had taken him two-thousand years to come to such understanding. Humans and Elves had to learn to deal with each other. What they did not understand was that if they didn't..they were going to destroy Varnaya. It pained Rhitarion greatly to sit back idly as the beautiful world slowly began changing. He could not return home. Not yet. He needed to wait a bit longer.

Rhitarion knew that for him, returning home would not be as pleasant as it sounded. His task would only be starting. He would be lying if he were to say that he'd not become comfortable in his current state. Yes, he wished to be able to shift into his true form but he was able to do as he wished. That would all go away the moment he set foot in Ialeos. He would be required to take on the full role of ruler. Something he wasn't sure he was looking forward to.

Forcing himself to refocus on Jewel, he smiled at her. "I've only one more question, then you may question me as you like." He paused for a second, his eyes staring intently at the female. "Tell me, why is it that the Humans and the Elves do not get along? In your opinion. This is not something that I normally discuss outside of my..relations, however..perhaps a fresh outlook would greatly help." He fell silent once again. Perhaps he should not have said anything but he couldn't help it. He'd often wondered what the Elves thought what was the reasoning behind all of the fighting.

Jewel hesitated as he asked his question and thought about it long and hard. She had never put much thought into it; she only knew that she was tired of it. Still, she could find a good reason if she really thought about it, couldn't she? She stared up into the sky and thought about everything she knew about the war. Finally, after a while, she looked back at him, having decided.

"When I was growing up, my parents always told stories about the dragons. About how they rules us all. About how there was peace under the dragons. About how the war started when they left. I think that, in the beginning, it was probably started by something small. A dispute over territory, or something like that. But this time, there were no dragons, no one to help them peacefully solve things, they resorted to fighting. Humans and elves each thought the other was to blame...and started a lot of discrimination against each other. Everyone found something they hated about the other race. That was passed down to their children; to younger generations. Children always believe what their parents say...and sometimes those ideas stick even when they're adults.

"I'm not too much different. I'm not overly fond of what the humans do for the sake of progress; tearing down forests and changing everything to suit themselves. I'm wrong, I know; elves do the same thing. But it's been pounded into my head so many times, what else can I believe?"

She stopped, hesitating, and then shaking her head. "Sorry; I take too long to explain myself sometimes. Especially about things like this..."

She shook her head again and looked back to Rhitarion. "Now...it's obvious you aren't human...but you aren't exactly an elf, are you? Are you willing to tell me...what exactly you really are?" she asked curiously. She wouldn't push the issue too much if he refused, but that wouldn't stop her from being curious, or from trying to figure it out on her own.

The Dragon remained silent as Jewel gave him her opinion. "Do not apologize. I rather enjoyed your speech." He fell silent for a moment, Jewel asking him a question. He regarded her closely, debating with himself as to what he could say without saying what he was. A sad look came across the young Dragon's face. "It has been a very long time since I've heard the term Dragons. Too long. To most, the idea of a creature that is superior to their own race is something that they can not believe. Did you know, that the Humans have no record of such a being? They merely have their legends. In their stories, the Dragons are referred to as 'Wind Serpents'. If you were to ask a Human the very question I just asked you, do you know what their answer is? Every time it is the same thing. The Elves are treacherous creatures, they say. Your kind has given the Humans the impression that you believe yourselves better than them. It angers them."

Rhitarion hesitated for a moment, almost as if he was unsure of how to proceed. "You wish to know what I am. I am..forbidden from coming out and telling you what it is that you wish to know. However, if you were to..guess what I am then I am free to speak freely with you. I am neither Human nor Elf. You were right about that." Suddenly his crimson eyes were eyeing Jewel, shining. The Dragon smiled slyly. "You come across quite smart. I have no doubt that you'll figure it out." He wondered how quickly the young female would figure it out. The sooner she did, the sooner he could speak more freely. Suddenly, a thought occurred to him. He could not tell Jewel what he was but perhaps he could tell her who he was. "Nárion of the Redscale clan is my father. He was the ruler of my people before..the world fell into chaos. He was murdered in Silanos, one of the Human cities because they thought him a Elf. Since his death, I have been ruling in his place. However..I won't be king until I return to our homeland."

The Dragon slowly stood up, stretching. He slowly made his way over to his pack that he'd left sitting next to the large rock. He picked it up and then made his way back to the fire. He sat down and began slowly digging through the worn pack. He finally, finding what he was searching for, pulled out a small wrapped package. He opened the package revealing some sort of dried meat. He offered Jewel some before beginning to eat. "You know, I have faith in the races of this world. I know that one day, things will get better. This..war is only temporary. Something will happen to cause the end though this is hidden from me. Be assure, however..I have foreseen the end. The world will return to the way it was before the Disappearance." He fell silent at this, pondering over the terrible events that had transpired since his people had gone into hiding.

Jewel smiled a little when he said he had enjoyed her little speech, just a little embarrassed. Most people didn't usually give positive comments; she was typically called annoying or obnoxious. Still, his comment on the humans made her think really hard. As she thought, the humans weren't the only ones. She really couldn't blame the humans; because of their immortality, elves believed they could use that time to learn more than the elves. But the elves considered humans barbaric, and they might have just been doing what they thought would defend their own borders. They were always a little more assertive about things like that.

But her mind was quickly distracted as she listened to him talk about himself. It seemed very odd to her that so many of the things he had talked about sounded at least a little familiar to her. Her parents stories had been fairly thorough, so that was again her first thought. But she didn't believe they had existed. She didn't think he believed they existed, either. But the way he talked about it, it seemed he couldn't believe others didn't believe in dragons. And, again, when he spoke about himself, it sounded very familiar. But it made so little sense to her. Him, a dragon? While it made sense, she wasn't so sure.

She quietly accepted the dried meat, though she wasn't entirely sure about it. She hesitated to run the idea by him, though. What if he wasn't, and it was a wrong guess? She wasn't fond of being laughed at, really. But she was so curious! She was torn now. She gnawed at the dried meat as she thought.

"...It's impossible to forsee anything. At least, I think it is. Anyway, all we can do is try to change things." Why, then, had she run off? She wasn't entirely sure herself. She was just trying to get away from them all; she was just so tired of everything. She paused and looked back at him.

"Unless dragons aren't supposed to interfere..." So she'd make a guess. If she was wrong, oh well. Something told her that, if she was wrong, he wouldn't laugh at her, or make fun of her.

The Dragon listened intently to Jewel as she spoke. When she fell silent, the Dragon smiled and tilted his head once again. "Now that.." He paused for but a moment, "Is a very interesting theory. A good theory. If Dragons are unable to interfere with the goings on of the world, then that would certainly explain why they are not ruling over the Humans and the Elves as they have done so for such a very long time. However, then again, perhaps they simply have chosen to ignore the world? None save for the Dragons themselves can reach Ialeos so how are those of the Lower Lands to know if they have truly disappeared? Perhaps they are simply ignoring the world?" Falling silent for a moment, Rihtarion attempted to read Jewel's expression. Had she caught on yet as to what he was. He could not tell. Even if she hadn't, he had no doubt that it would only be a matter of time.

"Did you know, the Dragons once referred to those below them as the most sacred beings in the world. They loved the Humans and Elves as if they'd created the beings themselves. Imagine loving something so much that you would do anything for it only to receive no thanks..no gratitude for the things that you'd done for them. They only care when you've gone. You are the first in over a thousand years that I have spoken to that even knows of Dragons. I am glad that not everyone has forgotten them." When he finished speaking, the Dragon cast his eyes towards the flames, seemingly happy to stare at their source of warmth. He had been far to open. If the female near him was smart, as he suspected her to be, then she should be able to pick up on his hints. Honestly, Rhitarion longed for someone with whom he could speak freely with. He only hoped that he'd read the young Elf correctly. He felt as if he could trust her..that she wouldn't go off ranting about his kind. That was the last thing that he needed.

Dragons were only a lost memory now. Something that Rhitarion had not thought he would live to see. He could remember when he'd first been told his father's plan. He had not understood at first but with time he'd come to realize the views his father had when he'd been alive were right. How could the world continue the way it was if the Humans and Elves could not get along? They needed to realize that they indeed needed each other. Rhitarion wanted so badly to step in..to help those he came across but if he were to do that, then would they really be learning anything? The Dragon flicked his eyes back to Jewel. "Ialeos..the city of the Dragons. None have seen it save its inhabitants. It is said to be far more beautiful than any other city in all of Varnaya. The streets are lined with gold and stone from several of the tallest mountains. Many have sought its location but as time wears on, fewer and fewer look. Perhaps one day the Dragons will return. I imagine being away from such a place would be terribly hard." He eyed the woman near him, smiling a sad smile.

Jewel listened to him quietly. Apparently most people didn't tell stories of the dragons. And, she decided, she had been right. She wasn't quite sure what to make of the fact that he was a dragon. He was being fairly vague about everything, too. Perhaps he couldn't say anything about what he was? If that was indeed the case, then maybe she could figure out why the dragons left; why humans and leves were left to fight amongst themselves. She thought for a while about asking, but really, maybe it was better if she didn't know that much.

"My parents told a lot of stories about the dragons. I hadn't believed too many of the stories. Things are starting to make a little more sense now, though. I mean, I figured someone had controlled everyone...I just wasn't sure whether or not to believe that the dragons were actually the ones ruling. I wasn't, anyway. I think I understand that much a little better now." She had been looking around the area as she spoke, and now turned her attention back to him.

"You said you weren't able to tell me what you were, but you're throwing an awful lot of hints around, aren't you? I might have guessed earlier...and I'm still not even all that sure. If I'm wrong, I'll thank you not to laugh at me, alright? Are you a dragon?" She paused to think, debating, waiting for some confirmation. At least, she hoped that was what she would get. But, if that was true, then...maybe he had a reason for throwing out so many hints?

"...And, if I'm right...you must miss your home...having to live down here with elves and humans...and not able to even talk freely. I certainly couldn't imagine it..."

"I could not imagine laughing at you." Rhitarion said, a smile on his handsome face. "Especially since you are correct. I am a Dragon. Ah, yes. I do miss Ialeos terribly. I should very much like to return someday though I'm afraid that my time here in the Lower Lands will not end for a very long time. We are permitted to speak of ourselves if the being either is a dragon or speaks of what we are." His red eyes found Jewel's paler ones. "It is not all bad. From time to time my path crosses that of one of my kind. It is far too risky for us to travel together. It is rare to find more than one Dragon openly conversing together let alone them traveling together. When we first left Ialeos, I traveled with my mother. However, when my father passed from this world I left on my own. My path is now separate from hers. I must make sure that none of our kind are discovered and that all obey our laws."

Silence echoed throughout the clearing for a moment before the Dragon spoke again. "So now that I may speak freely with you without fear of breaking any laws, please feel free to question me as you wish. I can only imagine the thoughts running through your mind." He said. Rhitarion had always known his kind existed and the other two of the world. Therefor, he could not understand how it would feel to discover a being that had long since been though myth. He imagined it was a strange thing to have happen to oneself.

Rhitarion realized that after having Jewel speak of his race that he was rather glad. Glad that he'd finally found a being in the world that he could truly be honest with. It had been such a very long time since he'd been able to be honest about who and what he was. It felt..liberating in a way. He only feared his mother's reaction when she found out that her son was traveling with a Elf..a Elf that knew exactly what he was. His mother was a strict follower of the laws that had been lain down for his kind such a very long time ago by his Ancestors. Though Rhitarion, too, followed these laws he did not believe in following only what was written. It had caused his mother and him to get into fights every few years or so. Something they had come to expect.

He smiled at Jewel, something he found himself doing more and more. He rather liked the female Elf that had crossed his path. She was different from most he'd met before. "There is one thing, I should mention before I allow you to question me. I must insist that you remain silent about what you've learned. Otherwise, it could end badly for the both of us. No others must know of my kinds' existence. Not yet. You are not ready for such a thing." He fell silent, allowing the female to speak if she so wished it.

Jewel paused; she had been right. Not that that had never happened...but she hadn't expected to be right. She had thought dragons didn't exist; or they existed at one point, and then disappeared from existence. Something like that. To know that this was a dragon she was talking to...and not some other elf, or even some different strange creature...it was strange. But not overly strange, once she really thought about it. They had disguised themselves in some of her parents stories, but she had never expected that much to be true.

But, now that she knew the dragons did exist, but were just walking around, pretending to be elves, she would have to keep a better eye out. But maybe later; what were the chances of running into yet another dragon? She hesitated, but nodded.

"I understand; I won't tell anyone, about anything." How the humans and elves weren't ready for this information, she didn't exactly understand. They had kept peace for so long...and they could really use that again. But they were dragons, and she was sure they had their own reasons. She thought long and hard before questions burst out of her.

"How many dragons are wandering around, looking like elves? Why would the dragons leave their home, even if they did stop ruling over the rest of us? What was Ialeos like? Why-?" She stopped herself. She was starting to sound more and more like a child after hearing a new story. She shook her head and looked back to him.

"Sorry...I know you said I could ask questions, but that...was probably too many at once; I sound like a child..." She shook her head again. "...I guess...what I'm really most curious about...is why you gave me so many hints; why you wanted me to guess right?"

Rhitarion laughed lightly at the way Jewel began asking so many questions at once. When the woman realized what she was doing, she apologized and asked another question. The Dragon's expression had not changed. He truly had not minded Jewel asking her questions. He could only imagine what was going through her mind at the moment. He almost felt bad about allowing her to discover what he was. She wouldn't be able to tell anyone about what she'd discovered. Would she truly be able to handle it? It was too late now to be worry about such things. The damage was already done. "You've no need to apologize. I really don't mind all the questions. It was expected. I will gladly answer them all." He paused for a moment, as if trying to decide what to say next. "Imagine traveling alone for two-thousand years. You tend to get to a point where you are..weary of the solitary way your life has become. I felt as if I could..perhaps use the company. Could you imagine how much more difficult our traveling together would have been had you not made it possible for us to speak freely with one another? That is why I gave you the hints. Besides, I find you different from the rest of those I have met along my travels."

The Dragon paused his speech for a moment, running his mind over the questions that Jewel had began spewing at him a few moments before. "There are many of us roaming the Lower Lands. I could not put a number on them for it has been some time since our numbers have been counted. We are everywhere, though, if that helps. Those of us that do not have red eyes are allowed to live in your cities. However, most prefer to wander the world. There are a few groups that travel together and we come together once every few years. Those that do live in the cities hold professions and carry on with their lives much as a Elf would. They are a bit harder to spot than someone like myself." Pausing, Rhitarion thought for but a moment before speaking once again.

"Ialeos sits along the mountain range of Kalumor. It was built a very long time ago by one of my Ancestors. It is quite large and spacious to allow for us to remain in either form. When we left, the stones were still a light shade of grey but with no upkeep, the stone has most likely gotten darker. The streets are lined with gold and silver in intricate patterns that are located along the walls and any other stone edge. There were markets and shops in the center of our city..the busiest place. We even had a palace that sat more towards the sun. That would be where I grew up. Though Ialeos sits atop the mountain, we still had our small streams that ran through Ialeos. There are even animals that live up there that do not fear us. I do miss it terribly.."

Rhitarion was not sure how much to tell Jewel about the Dragons' reasoning about their disappearing. He assumed that she would not understand. "We left Ialeos..because it was my father's wish. He was the one that put into place the order for all of my kind to live in the Lower Lands. Though we are forbidden from telling anyone what we are..we are allowed to intervene somewhat. Though they are normally seen as small acts, we still try to help those in need. My father didn't want to leave the Asaldi and the Hiralru..that is..Elves and Humans in our language...without or protection. You must understand his reasoning. My father was a very old Dragon and had seen much in his life. He could not understand why the Asaldi and the Hiralru can not seem to get along. Though you two are very different from each other..you are also the same. He thought that by us disappearing you would be forced to come together as one. Though, that has obviously not happened. You two are simply killing each other off.." A slight pause. Rhitarion wanted to tell Jewel how the Dragons could return..but should he? He looked down for a moment and then continued. "The only way that we can return is if I return to Ialeos and take the throne. However, it isn't that simple. If I return before the time is right, I won't be able to enter. After we'd all left the city, my father had a spell cast around the boundaries of Ialeos, preventing any from entering before the designated time." The Dragon fell silent, expecting even more questions. He honestly didn't mind. It had been such a long time since he'd had anyone to talk to, he found Jewel questions a good thing. He..rather enjoyed them.

Jewel listened carefully, thinking hard about his answers as he did. She was really just glad he didn't see her as too annoying. That meant the conversation wasn't going to stop suddenly; she still felt like talking. After all, it sounded like they had both been travelling on their own for a while, and needed the company. Ialos sounded beautiful; it was just a shame Rhitarion couldn't go back yet. The dragons were probably all having a fairly hard time. None of them could go home yet, and they all had to travel, pretending to be elves, or stay in an elven civilization and pretend to be elves there. It couldn't be very much fun...or too relaxing.

She just wished she could do something to help out. But there really didn't seem to be anything she could do. The spell had been cast by a dragon, so it would be different by any spell cast by any other being. She couldn't do anything about the spell part, really. She thought, for one brief second, she might be able to help stop the war between humans and elves. But no elf she knew would take that thought seriously, and no human she had ever heard of would willingly listen to her. She glanced around the area as she thought, and then turned her attention back to Rhitarion.

"I don't have too many more questions, really. Just...Is there anything I could possibly do to help? Do you know when the designated time is? And...well...how exactly am I different from others? As far as I know, I'm pretty much like any other elf..."

The Dragon thought for a moment about what Jewel had asked him. Was there anything that she could do? As he racked his mind for the answer, Rhitarion's handsome face became slightly focused. At last, he spoke. "There is only two ways that I know of that would allow me to enter Ialeos early. My father was smart enough to know that our kind would quickly grow tired of this existence. He was one of the great Seers. He had the ability to see into the future. I was not lucky in this. I only get glimpses every so often and most of the time the images I see do not make sense to me until later. Anyway, he told me that if the Asaldi and the Hiralru ever began to truly become a threat to each other..as in entire cities were being wiped out or if the two races tried to reconcile with each..then I am allowed to return before the designated time. I fear that the Asaldi and the Hiralru will kill each other off long before they ever try to get along."

Rhitarion fell silent for a moment, allowing the information that he'd just given Jewel to sink in. Either one of the loopholes that were in his father's orders was something that would take a very long time to take place, at least in Rhitarion's opinion. "I'm afraid that I do not know the designated time." he said, eyeing the Elf that sat near him. "I will simply know according to my father. I'm not really sure how soon or how long from now it will happen. I.." he hesitated for a moment, trying to put his thoughts into words. "I could be dead by that happens, for all I know. I would return to Ialeos right this second if I could. When we first left and after my father had died, I tried returning. I couldn't get more than a mile away from the city. All I can do at this point..is wait." He smiled then, a saddened sort of smile, "I can just tell that you are different from the others. I can not explain it any other way. As I said a moment ago, though I am not nearly as skilled as my father, I do still pick things up."

The Dragon wondered what the female Elf was thinking. He could imagine what she was thinking. He was giving her so much information, Rhitarion was unsure if she would be able to process it all. "I think that we can head out tomorrow. I'm already feeling a bit more energetic than I have for the past few days. Do you have a particular destination in mind? If not, I'd been planning on heading towards the Moonveiled Mountain. Though it is not nearly as magnificent as some of the other mountains of our world, it is far from the Humans. Besides, I've promised another Dragon that I would drop in."

Jewel nodded as she listened to the dragon, despite her confusion. There were dragons that could see the future? Even if he could only see bits and pieces, it sounded fairly interesting. But what really confused her was the dragons father. He was a seer? He had been able to see the future? Then surely he knew what would have happened as soon as the dragons left? Surely he would have known how hard it was for the humans and elves to get along. So why would he do something like this? She racked her brain, but came up with nothing. Then again, that dragon was undoubtedly much older than she was. He most likely knew something she didn't; probably something no one else knew, even. She only wished she could understand. She shrugged that thought off.

"...Let's not think that you might be dead then, alright? Only a mile...that's fairly close...I mean, it's not like it's dozens of miles away. I mean, it's not in the city, no, but it must have been at least a little better to be close to the city." She shook her head. She doubted she was helping very much. Then again, there wasn't anything she could do to help. She had asked, and she headn't heard anything she could do, except to try and stop the war...but, with only her, and even if Rhitarion helped...she doubted there was much that could be done without telling the others he was a dragon. Which put them in quite a mess. Unless she did what she could to hide and convince anyone she came across that this war wasn't worth it.

She paused when Rhitarion menioned visiting another dragon. she stared hard at the ground, then up at the sky. She shook her head.

"I didn't have anywhere in particular in mind; I have to problem with going to the mountain. ...I just have one question...would this dragon think it was...odd that I was travelling with you? I mean...would it bother him that I know, even though I'm just an elf, and not a dragon?" she asked, curiously. The last thing she wanted at this point was trouble, especially from a dragon.

The Dragon regarded his new companion for a moment after she'd spoken. He thought over all that she'd said. Rhitarion had no worries about meeting with the other Dragon. "We will be meeting Calenor. I grew up with him in Ialeos. He is one of the few that I consider a true friend. Calenor will question your knowledge and how you gained it. However, once he is satisfied that I did not tell you what I am, he will not mind at all with your being with me. Calenor is actually a leader of one of the traveling groups I spoke of earlier. His group is not as large as the one my mother leads, however." Rhitarion paused for a moment, debating with himself as to whether he should continue with his direction of speech or not. He, at last, decided it best to continue. "Word will spread quickly of our traveling together. I would be willing to bet that my mother will come looking for me..to make sure that I have broken no laws. I promise you that I will allow no harm to befall you so long as you are in my company. Though my kind are powerful we do not make it a habit of hurting those weaker than ourselves unless necessary. Even then, it is only if all other methods have failed and the being is a dire threat to all of the world."

Rhitarion fell silent, starring into the flickering flames once again. He had found himself enjoying Jewel's company and hoped that she would not change her mind about traveling with him after hearing that they were going to be with one of the traveling groups for a short time. Rhitarion needed to meet with Calenor to see if the fighting between the Asaldi and the Hiralru had gotten worse. While he'd been traveling through the Wilds of the world over the past few months he'd felt as if something was wrong but he'd not been able to place it. He hoped that the war wasn't getting worse even though for him that meant that he would be remaining in the Lower Lands. "Jewel" the Dragon said..his face becoming slightly troubled, "I'm afraid that things will begin to get worse very soon. However, with terrible times..eventually happy times follow. It is only a matter of time."

He slowly stood from his seat, and began arranging their campsite a bit..moving his things away from the fire. "We should probably get some rest. It will take us a few days to reach our destination and I would like to make as much distance as possible. I'm afraid..that I am used to traveling much quicker than I will be allowed to if traveling with someone. I think I shall enjoy it, however. It has been a long time since I've been able to truly look at the world." He was smiling at the young Elf. He hoped that he had not offended her by saying that he'd have to travel much slower than normal. He truly did not mind.

Jewel stiffened a bit, but forced herself to relax. She couldn't get mad for being considered weaker than the dragons; she wouldn't be able to bring herself to fight one if necessary. She'd be far too afraid. Besides that, it didn't really sound all too fun to have his mother hunting him down just to see her...well, to make sure he hadn't broken any of their laws. Already this sounded like it would be...just a little less fun than before. Still, though, travelling with a dragon sounded very interesting. She might learn some new things! Besides, she had already come to like the dragon. She wouldn't leave just because there were going to be a few....little bumps along the way. ...Maybe not so little. But oh well; things happened. And anyway, if she went along to meet htis other dragon and his travelling group, maybe she'd learn more about these dragons.

The only thing that bothered her was really the fact that he thought things were going to get worse before they got better. She copied him in moving things away from the fire, but remained silent, thinking. Things would get worse...how could they be worse than they already were? Things already seemed very bad between the humans and elves; getting worse than that seemed impossible. She practically ignored the fact that they would be travelling slower than he was used to; she didn't like travelling fast to begin with. She nodded.

"Right...there's no real rush, anyway. I haven't been travelling very fast on my own, anyway. I like to explore a little bit, at least." At least this part sounded like it would be fun. No rush, no pressure...just walking. Sure, he wanted to make as much distance as possible, but at least they wouldn't be moving at his speed. She'd never be able to keep up; not with a dragon. She smiled back at him.

"But I understand making as much distance as possible. I'll try to keep up."
