Halloway's School for the Gifted

Halloway's School of the Gifted:

As far back as the locals of Halloway can remember, the large and isolated school has always been in business. None are allowed to enter onto the hidden grounds unless given an invitation. The grounds are protected by large, towering bushes and trees, preventing any from the outside to see within. A large metal gate is located at the front of the grounds, blocking all from entering unless given permission. The grounds are all kept up and always neat and clean. Picture perfect as describe by past students. There is a large lake located in front of the school, filled with many fish and plant life. The school has many amenities including a pool, tennis court, basketball court, trails for walking or riding horses, gym, horse stable where students are allowed to board their own horses if they wish, a track, and even a movie theater where the entire school gathers on the weekend to watch a film. All of the locals whisper about what is truly going on in this college. Why are none of the students ever seen out in town? Is the school performing some sort of experiments on those that live there? What the locals don't know is that the truth is so much more fantastic.

Halloway's School for the Gifted is not your ordinary college. The students that live there all have special abilities, which will be listed below in the abilities section. At the school, all students are given lessons on how to control their abilities as well as classes for studies that normal college students take. The weekday schedule is as follows: Breakfast begins at seven o'clock a.m. This lasts until eight o'clock a.m. After breakfast, students then head to their classes. Morning classes begin at eight-fifteen a.m. and lasts until twelve o'clock p.m. Lunch then begins at twelve-fifteen and lasts until one-fifteen. Students then head to their afternoon classes which lasts until four o'clock p.m. After classes, students have an hour until dinner begins. Students are free to spend this hour as they please. Dinner begins at five o'clock p.m and lasts for an hour. After dinner, students are free to do as they please until curfew, which is at nine-thirty p.m. When curfew begins, students are expected to be in their House parlors. Inside the parlor, students are allowed to do as they please. Boys' dorms are located to the right of the room, up the stairs and the girls' on the right, up the stairs.

Each House parlor is decorated in the house's colors and emblem. There are two houses: the RoseWoods and the ThornWells. The house of RoseWood only accepts those students whom have shown qualities of a caring person. These students are always willing to help out with anything. They are kind and very rarely ever have a cruel thing to say to anyone..except for those of the ThornWell House. RoseWood's colors are a brilliant red, a shining gold, a deep black and their emblem is that of a blooming rose and its stem. The house of ThornWell is the complete opposite of RoseWood. The students that are accepted into this house are usually not nearly as friendly. They enjoy causing trouble of any kind and love picking on those that are from the RoseWood house. Thornwell's colors are a brilliant green, a deep black, a shining silver and their emblem is that of a wolf's head. The two houses do not get along, always arguing with one another.

When students first come to Halloway's, they are houseless, and stay in the new arrivals dorms. They have no parlor, just their room. New students are approached by the heads of the houses to join a particular house. The student will usually join the first to ask them as not having a house almost seems to put a mark on you. You're picked on quite terribly until you join RoseWood or ThornWell. Once you join a house, you are allowed to move your things into your new dorm rooms. You are then truly seen as a student of Halloway.

Abilities:

Those that are able to wield air can be quite dangerous. Not only can they move air to cause terrible winds and prevent someone from being able to breath, but they can also control the temperature of the air around them. Those that can control air are forced to control their emotions as their ability is directly linked to how they feel. Only those from ThornWell wield this ability.

Image

Image

Those that are able to wield fire are very dangerous. They are able to conjure up flames in their hands and are able to direct the path of the flames as they wish. They are also able to make flames appear on any surface as they wish. The power of fire is fueled by anger and hatred. Only those that are in the ThornWell house are able to wield this power.

Image

Image

Those that are able to wield water are dangerous but can be helpful as well. They must use water from their surroundings as they are unable to conjure up their element. They can move water about as they please and can drown another person if they so chose, but they can also prevent someone from drowning. Students that specialize in this element are in RoseWood.

Those that are able to wield the powers of earth are wonderous in their abilities. They are able to move the ground that we walk on and even help things to grow..as long as it's planted. They could use their powers to easily kill someone so it's a good thing that only those from RoseWood ever have this ability.

Landon stopped walking and leaned against the wall. She stood in front of him, her hand still in his. He began telling her how he had known the women. He even dated her. Danielle bit her bottom lip softly and scanned his face. She was jealous, there was no other way to put it. He mentioned that she had changed, and soon enough she was seeing exactly what he meant. Scenes from last year flooded her mind rather quickly, and she tightened her grip on his hand involuntarily. The link was closed and Danielle put a hand up to her head. She felt light headed. Whenever he showed her what he meant, Danielle felt a huge rush, like he was almost giving him a part of her. She nodded her head at him, understanding she was bad news now. She just hoped Sydney wouldn't tell Laurie that a RoseWood had grabbed Landon's hand. She couldn't even believe what Laurie would do.

He began speaking again and Danielle listened intently, not wanting to miss a thing. Then he moved closer, almost closing the gap between them fully. Her face lit up when Landon regained his beautiful smile. "I mean besides class, nothing really. Why? Did you have anything in mind for us to do?" She wondered what the two could possible do this time. Last night was great. They had just talked and visited the stables. She wouldn't have changed anything if she could. She didn't think they could do much considering he had practice and such. Danielle was going, but she hadn't told Landon. She wanted to keep that a surprise. She couldn't imagine the look on his face, if there would be any at all. Maybe just a smile, but it would be worth it. Landon had this beautiful smile. It was almost breath taking, really. Whenever she saw, she couldn't help but smile back.

She wondered what his voice sounded like. It could be angelic, or it could be raspy and sexy. Whatever it was, she knew she would love it. He was already in a band, no matter what he did. She found that attractive, hot, really. No to mention he was lead singer and played guitar? Might as well slap Danielle in the face! She couldn't wait to see him in action today.

She smiled back and scanned his face. There was a shine in his eye and he seemed back to normal. Danielle quickly looked at his lips, then flicked her eyes to his. She wanted to be as close to him as possible, but she had a feeling it would be too soon or kind of creepy. She didn't know exactly how he felt towards her, but she hoped it was close to how she felt about him. "Not to be rude, but next time you show me what happened, with the little movie clips, can you tell me first? It kinda makes me light headed." Her voice was soft as she spoke, not meaning to upset or offend him in anyways. That was the last thing he wanted to do. She finally realized how tight she was holding his hand and she loosened her grip. "Sorry. I didn't know I was holding that tight. She looked at their hands, her hair falling in her face. "I guess it catches me a little off guard to, you know? How would you like it if I sent pictures into your mind and caught you off guard?" She looked back up, smiling at him.

Landon smiled brightly at Danielle. "Well, I was sort of thinking of heading to the stables for a bit. Wanna come with me?" he asked, smiling. Landon knew his parents very well and knew that they'd probably already brought whatever it was that his sister had needed and Zodiac, as well. He needed to make sure his horse was taken care of before going off and doing whatever else he could get into before band practice. As he was lost in thought, Danielle spoke. He listened intently, and..as he heard what she was saying, he smiled. "Yea, sorry about that. I tend to forget that those that aren't telepathic are affected when I enter their mind. I'll let you know before I I do it again, promise." He began leading the way, taking his time. There was still plenty of time until he needed to be at the theater.

He fell silent as he walked, allowing for his companion to speak if she so wished it. As they walked, Landon couldn't help but think of how close he felt to Danielle. It was a odd feeling for him. He could not even recall feeling this way for Sydney. He could not understand it. He knew that he shouldn't be feeling like this already, after all..they'd not known each other very long. Besides, Landon doubted that Danielle would continue to want to spend time with him once she realized how horrible their fellow students could be. He wished so badly that things were different. He could only imagine how things would be if the RoseWoods and the ThornWells weren't always against each other. He gave a small shake of his head. These were all foolish thoughts, of course. There was nothing that anyone could do to change how things were. They only had to simply get by.

It seemed like no time they'd reached the stables. Today, they were alive with movement. Many students were leading their horses or riding, barely acknowledging the pair as they entered the stable. Landon led the way, making sure that they were out of the way. "So, I decided to have one of my horses sent. I thought that you'd like to see him." He eyed Danielle closely, wondering if she was glad that he'd decided to have his horse sent. Landon approached a stall that was located towards the middle of the stable, on the left side. A shining silver plaque had been placed above the stall door, Zodiac's name engraved in the metal. Landon slowly slid the door open and waited for Danielle to enter before following her. Instead of closing the door, he merely placed a chain across the opening, preventing the large draft horse from being able to leave. Landon smiled as the horse carefully moved around to see who had entered his stall. The horse approached Landon, patiently waiting for his master to greet him. "This," Landon said, moving to gently pat the large horse, "Is Zodiac. He's still got a bit of training left but he's very gentle. As are all draft breeds. You'll have to come riding with me one day. If you haven't grown tired of me already." He laughed lightly.

Landon smiled brightly. Zodiac turned his great head to eye the female. He moved closer to the girl, bringing his nose close to Danielle. Landon slowly moved to take hold of Zodiac's halter, making sure the horse didn't crowd the young woman. "Zodiac will usually stay out of your personal space as long as you bring him a carrot or apple. It's one of the things that he needs working with on." Landon kept the horse still, allowing for the young woman to get closer and hopefully get to know the great horse.

Danielle nodded her head when he asked if she would want to go to the stables with him. "Why, I'd love to!" He continued speaking, and then led her. "Don't be sorry. It's okay. If and when you do it it again, just hug me or something." She smiled and continued walking. She didn't say anything else after that. Instead, she walked in silence beside him. The silence between the two wasn't awkward to Danielle, but comfortable, like the kind of silence between two best friends or even family. It was nice. She liked how they didn't have to talk to each other all the time, and they could just walk with each other quietly. It was like they knew what the other was thinking. Well, Landon had the ability to know, but for Danielle she was just comfortable. That was all she cared about.

They reached the stable in no time. Danielle was led over to a stall with a shining plaque over it. She stepped in the stall and watched the horse. Landon introduced Danielle and she smiled, taking a few small steps forward. "I'd love to come riding with you. If I had grown tired of you, I don't think I'd be with you right now. You got him here fast though." Danielle laughed a little. It was true. Just last night they had been talking about his horses, and here Zodiac was. She remembered how Landon had said his family had so many horses, so she figured they had some sort of connections with the school. Her eyes scanned the plaque and she smiled a little, "Nice plaque, she commented. Zodiac moved towards Danielle and Landon grabbed the halter. "That's alright. I could help. I never really trained my horse. I just pretty much watched my dad do it. He did all the hard work and I watched. I helped with what I could though. That was pretty much just taking care of Dasher though. Oh, that was my horse's name. Dasher. I don't know if I told you that or not yet. I have a bad memory when it comes to certain things." She smiled and moved to Zodiac's side. She pet him softly, making sure she didn't stir him or anything. The last thing she wanted was to make him feel uneasy or frighten him. Thankfully, he stayed calm.

Danielle looked at Landon and smiled, resting her hand on Zodiac. "He's a good horse. I don't mind the personal space thing personally, but others might. Did you train him yourself or did your parents? Or other random horse trainers?" She laughed a little. She was curious. With the amount of horses his family had, she would think that there would be some horse trainers. However, he could have helped his family train them. It was likely, but Danielle thought it would have been a bit of a hassle. She remembered watching her dad train her horse. It was quite a handful. Dasher never seemed to listen at first, but overtime she became more obedient. Danielle's mind wandered back to Landon's family and their horses. "Does Laurie have any horses?" She found it kind of hard to see Laurie as an animal lover. However, just because she was cruel to people didn't mean she couldn't love horses. She moved her hand again, petting Zodiac. Her mind was still trying to picture Laurie being an animal lover. For some reason, it was difficult to imagine.

"I trained him." Landon said, beaming. "Zodiac is the first horse that I've trained. My parents have a few trainers that they keep employed all year round so usually they do all of the training. I thought that it would be nice to give it a shot. I don't think that I've done too horribly." Landon smiled, gently patting the horse. When Danielle asked if Laurie had any horses, he laughed. "My sister did at one time..when she was younger. It was probably around her seventeenth birthday that she really started to change. She quit doing anything with her horses around that time. It was sort of funny..she's the one that got me into really wanting to have anything to do with horses and then she quit on me." He paused for a moment, as if thinking. "Laurie has become a terrible person since she started going here. She is the perfect example of a ThornWell. My parents are so proud of her. I just don't understand why she would want to be such a terrible person." He sighed heavily, obvious that his sister caused him great grief.

"I suppose that we can't change those around us. Either way, I'm just glad that I'm nothing like my sister. I can't even imagine being so terrible." All of his life, Landon had looked up to his older sister. It wasn't until he'd come to Halloway's and seen what she'd become that he'd stopped looking at her the same way. Nothing would ever be the same between them ever again. He just couldn't understand why she thought that she needed to be so cruel. "You know, I'm glad that we met." he said, smiling at Danielle. "I can't imagine what would have happened to you if you were forced to go about your days without me to bother you." Landon turned and exited the stall, leaving Danielle with Zodiac for a moment. He'd noted that the stable hands had already fed and watered the horse. He found a couple of brushes and made his way back to Danielle. He offered one to the pretty girl and then moved over to the other side of his horse. He then proceeded to begin brushing his horse.

"Laurie and I were very close not too long ago." His eyes found Danielle's. "Now she thinks that she can just boss me around. It drives me insane." At any rate, Landon knew that Laurie would soon pose a problem for the pair. As soon as the other woman found out that he'd been hanging around a RoseWood, he'd never hear the end of it. He wasn't looking forward to it and he wondered if Danielle had thought about what would happen when his sister found out. Another silent sigh. He wished that things were more simpler but..he supposed that with the powers that they'd been blessed with so must the hardships come as well.

Danielle looked at Landon impressed, nodding her head. "Wow. That's impressive," she stated. A smile grew on her face as she continued talking. "From what I see, you've done a great job. Bravo, Mr. Harper. If I ever get another horse, you should help me train him or her." The thought of getting another horse made Danielle sad, but she didn't show it. The chance of her getting another horse was slim, too. Taking care of a horse was a big responsibility and cost quite a bit. Her parents weren't the wealthiest people ever, but wealth never mattered to Danielle. What mattered to her was what she had. When they moved though, the majority of what she had slipped through her fingers. Moving so far away when she was young was difficult for the girl. Her parents never told her why the moved, but Danielle always had a feeling it was because of a job opportunity or something. It never really came up in conversation. All she knew was that he dad was always at work longer in America than he had been in England.

The rest of what Landon said was all about his sister, but a short part wasn't. "I'm glad we met too! Trust me, I can't either." She smiled and grabbed the brush, thanking him. Danielle ran the brush along the horse's coat, making sure to be gentle. "I can't even imagine. That must be tough. You must miss being close to your sibling. I'm an only child. It can get really lonely. Just be glad you're not like me." She stuck her tongue out at him and giggled. It was true. Danielle hated being an only child 99.9% of the time. You never had any one to talk to about issues they could relate to, you didn't have any one to guide you through high school or other events. She couldn't share clothes with an old sister or hand them down to a younger one. She couldn't play sports or video games with her brother. Danielle only had her parents. Her parents were always there for her, but they were parents. However, there were always the downsides of having siblings. Like Landon and Laurie, they could slowly drift apart. Siblings were always compared to each other. No matter what a parent said, few kids always knew they were loved more or less than their brother or sister. Fighting often occurred, etc. Danielle never got to experience the bad or good sides of having siblings.

Danielle paused the brushing briefly before continuing again. When she spoke this time, her voice was softer than usual, being just above a whisper. Whenever she spoke quietly, her English accent was noticeable, like now. "Landon, how long do you think until your sister or the whole entire school finds out about us? Sydney saw us earlier, and you said she was included in your sisters circle of friends. So, wouldn't that mean that Sydney could tell her and it would be soon? Like it could possibly be today, couldn't it? Really and truly it's just a matter of time. Do you think your ex would rat us out or keep it as a sort of blackmail against you? I saw she could be mean, but I don't know her life you do." Danielle paused and took a deep breath before ending her rant. "From what I've seen your sister do to a girl for no reason, I'm kind of worried. I probably shouldn't be, but if she did anything to me it would be for a reason. A pretty stupid reason, but still. It's something." She puffed out her cheeks and looked at him.

Landon laughed lightly as Danielle stuck her tongue out. He merely nodded as the girl continued to speak. As she was finishing her speech, Landon noted the young woman's slight accent. Curious, he thought. He made sure to pay attention to what Danielle was saying. When she'd finished, Landon smiled a sad smile. "Sydney will most likely tell Laurie as soon as she sees her. I doubt that you've got anything to worry about for today. Laurie will confront me first." He paused for a moment, eyeing Danielle. "My sister will probably threaten me and things like that. Nothing out of the usual. As for you.." Landon fell silent for a moment, slowly making his way to the other side of Zodiac, standing quite close to Danielle. He offered a kind smile. "You have nothing to worry about. I won't let my sister hurt you. Though I am not gifted with the element of the flame, my ability is just as terrible. My sister has never won any of our fights."

Landon hoped that his words had calmed Danielle's worries. His ability to manipulate the air around him had always been a blessing. Though his ability wasn't as straight forward as his sister's, he could still take care of himself very well. "So see? Nothing to worry about. Of course..that means you'll have to spend more time with me. I know that it's a pretty terrible thing to have to do, but..it could always be worse." he joked, laughing. He fell silent for a moment, wondering exactly how long long it would take Laurie to find out. He was sure that Sydney had most likely already sent his sister a text, telling her exactly what she thought was going on. Even before meeting Danielle, Landon had not understood why everyone seemed to hate each other. He understood that they were always told that was the way things were, but..did it have to be?

He gave a small shake of his head, trying to get the thoughts out of his mind. He smiled again at Danielle. "I know that the hatred between our houses seems silly. There is reasoning behind it, more so than what I've already told you. Unfortunately, that's something that you'll have to discover on your own. Now, I suppose that we should finish up here. Laurie will come here first and honestly I don't feel up to fighting with her right this second. Is there anywhere else that you'd like to see?" He was happy to do whatever Danielle wanted. He'd been at Halloway's long enough to have seen everything, unlike the woman near him. There was still quite a bit to see and he was actually curious as to what Danielle would want to do.

Danielle smiled when he stood close to her and assured her Laurie wouldn't get to hurt her. Danielle felt better, but there was always a possibility of the two females clashing without Landon around. If that ever were to happen, the blonde would have to fend for herself. Physical fighting was never a strong suit of hers, but manipulating the earth was a different story. It came easily to her, like walking or talking. She could get out of hand when using her abilities however. She hoped that day wasn't going to come any time soon. The female still had to learn how to fully control what she did. Getting out of hand was often a problem for her, and she hoped this school would help her overcome that. On top of all that, Laurie wouldn't mind harming Danielle, but Danielle didn't know if she had the heart to hurt Laurie. It would be self defense, but the woman was still related to Landon. How would he feel if Danielle were to hurt Laurie? Laurie was his sister, but Danielle was just a girl he met the other day.

She laughed when the Landon joked about spending time with her. "Poor me. I might as well drop out of this school now." she teased right back at him. Danielle didn't mind spending time with him. If anything, the thought of being with him more made than she already was made her happy. Unfortunately, the thought of them doing it so she wouldn't be put in danger made her sad. The situation made her feel as if she was in a fairy tale. Danielle was the princess locked in the tower that was guarded by the fire breathing dragon, Laurie. Landon was the knight in shining armor that was coming to save her. the only ironic part with the scenario is that Laurie could probably breathe fire if she put her mind to it. Her feeling about the whole situation ended up being neutral.

"Oooooh, an adventure!" she cooed. Landon asked if Danielle wanted to see anywhere else. She pursed her lips and thought for a little bit. Nothing at this school really caught her attention from what she saw earlier. They had already been to the library, the stables, the school store, and the movie theater together. What else was there to see besides the usual? After about another minute, a light bulb seemed to go off in her head. "I have an idea. Instead of you showing me around and taking me places, I'm going to take you to some place I found yesterday. It's no place special, but I like it. Reminds me of home." Danielle smiled at him and pet Zodiac before snatching the brush Landon was holding. She made her way out of the stall and put the brushes back where the male had grabbed them from. She made her way outside and waited for Landon out there. As she waited, she looked ahead of her. They had to practically walk halfway across the school to get to their destination. They were headed to the front of the school. Luckily, from what she could see, they would pass close to nobody as they walked.

Once he caught up to her, Danielle smiled and linked her arm with his. She smiled and started to walk to the front of the school. As she walked, she remained fairly quite. Nothing much was going on in her mind, except for a few things. Due to this, it was easy for her to get lost looking at her surroundings. Bugs were munching on leaves, mother birds were gathering and feeding worms to their babies, leaves were rustling in the calm breeze. It was a beautiful day and everything was calm as can be. It made Danielle forget all about her worries with really anything. In no time they were there and she stopped in front of the large tree she had sat in yesterday. "Okay, okay. I know what you're probably thinking. 'It's just a tree. What's so special about it? Why did this attractive woman bring me here? What are we going to do?'" When she threw out the questions, her voice deepened somewhat, but not much. It returned to it's normal peppy tone once she spoke. "To answer your possible questions, yes it is a tree. It's nothing grand, but the view is amazing. I came here yesterday before dinner. I used to climb trees a lot when I was younger. It was sort of hobby.. I wanted you too see. Lastly, what we do is up to you. I brought you here, now you can decide. But, when we get in there." She pointed at the branches in the tree and smiled at him. "I just hope you're not afraid of heights or anything. It's pretty high." Danielle unlinked her arm from his and walked towards the tree so her bare arm was touching the bark. "Do you plan on climbing or would you like help?" she teased. Danielle smiled and placed a hand and foot on the tree.

Landon smiled brightly when Danielle informed him that she wanted to take him somewhere. He nodded and followed Danielle out of the stall. He allowed her to lead the way, walking quite close to her, her arm linked with his own. As they walked across the large lawn of the school, Landon honestly couldn't say that he was too awfully worried about what anyone would say if they were to see them together. Truly, Landon knew that it would only be a matter of time until everyone knew. When Danielle spoke at last, her voice almost startled him. He smiled once again, eyeing her from the corner of his eye. Danielle continued to speak and walked towards the tree. "No need to worry about me. I think that I can manage." He waited for Danielle to get up as high as she wanted before slowly following her up the tree.

Growing up on a large horse farm, Landon was quite used to climbing trees. He slowly and carefully made his way up. Once he'd reached the branch where his friend was, he sat close to her. "See! I managed just fine!" He took in his surroundings as he sat up in the tree. Landon found that he quite liked this secret place. He doubted that many, at least those that were in his house, would ever think to look to a tree for solitude. Those that he knew in ThornWell would never think to have much to do with nature. As Landon sat next to Danielle, he suddenly thought how strange his house truly was. Perhaps, truly..they were terrible, more so than Landon even thought. He begin to wonder if there would ever be any way to change the way that things were at Halloway's. Everyone there was so set in their ways. Would they ever be able to get along? Landon wanted nothing to do with the senseless fighting that went on everyday at the large school. He absolutely hated having to hide who he really was when he wasn't alone. Being with Danielle was like being free and Landon had to admit that he rather liked it.

Landon tried to focus on the woman next to him. He only had a hour or so before he had to be at the theater and he wanted to make sure that Danielle had his complete attention. He turned his eyes to her beautiful face, smiling gently. "I have to admit that this is rather a unique place that you found. How did you come across it?" he asked. As he looked around from the tree, Landon could a few scattered students enjoying the outdoors. Luckily it wasn't too awfully cold, even though it was January. Not that it would have bothered Landon much. "We have tons of trees around our house and barns. I used to climb quite a bit but when I got older I stopped." he laughed lightly, thinking of the days when he and Laurie would climb together. He missed those days though he doubted that he could admit that to anyone. "I'm glad that you showed me this." He gently took Danielle's hand in his own. He fell silent for a moment though the slight silence was comforting. Suddenly, a loud voice was in his head. Tell me that it's not true, Landon. Laurie Landon quickly became lost in his mind, blocking out Danielle for a few moments. He quickly began blocking his thoughts from his sister. I can't say that. I take it that you've talked to Syd? Landon could swear that he heard his sister laugh. Of course. I'm not sure why you though that I wouldn't find out. You have to stop hanging around the RoseWood girl. She's not one of us. It's forbidden and you know this. Don't make me a enemy, Landon. Landon was silent for a moment before he answered his sister. Laurie, I won't stop spending time with her. Not unless she doesn't want anything to do with me. You WILL leave her alone. If you have any problems..it's me that you should come after..not her. Immediately his sister's sharp voice was in his mind once again. You like her? More so than you would let anyone think. Don't be surprised. I know you better than anyone. Very well. I'll leave her be..for now. But..you'd better watch your back, dear brother. And just like that she was gone. Laurie would carry through with her words, at least for now. At Least Danielle would have nothing to worry about. His eyes focused back on the world around him. He turned his eyes back to Danielle. He wondered if she'd noticed he'd not been with her for the past few minutes.

Danielle shimmied up the tree and waited for Landon. She sat sideways, her legs dangling and her arms against the bark of a lower branch. Landon popped his head up after a bit and settled in, sitting next to her so that their arms were touching. A giggle escaped her lips when Landon remarked how he managed to get up fine. Danielle looked at Landon and saw he was looking at their surroundings. She smiled and sat quietly, giving him time to do so. It didn't take him long to finish and turn his attention back to her. He questioned her and she smiled, looking at the ground below them before lifting her head back up and responding. "Well, I was walking around after the whole Williams thing and I just wanted to find a place to sit and relax. So that's what I did. I just walked around until I found a tree I liked. Plus, the fact that there is a lake and a bunch of plants around makes me feel at home." She inhaled deeply and then exhaled, enjoying the fresh, cool air. She listened as he continued to talk. "I'm glad I showed you this too. I was hoping you'd like it." He grabbed her hand and she grinned. She put the bag she was holding down on the thick three trunk and made sure it wouldn't fall or anything. After that she used her free hand to move her hair over to her right shoulder, twirling it before it touched her again.

Landon seemed to tense up or jerk a bit and Danielle noticed. She looked at him and furrowed her brow. He seemed to be staring out ahead of him, and she followed his gaze. Nothing interesting was going on and she didn't see Sydney or Laurie, or anyone else who seemed dangerous. Danielle looked at him once again, but she didn't say anything. She looked down and swung her legs, watching her feet disappear and reappear repeatedly. A few seconds passed and she could feel Landon look at her. Her head shot up and she looked at him, curiously. "Uh, are you okay?" she asked, cocking an eyebrow at him. "You kind tensed up and zoned out. So, what's up?" Danielle wondered what caused him to move so suddenly. It was pretty random, she had to admit.

As she waited for his answer she looked out in front of her. There were a few large gaps between the branches and Danielle stuck her leg out in front of her, closing the gaps so the leaves and branches hid them from the world. Once they were hidden, she lowered her leg and looked past the tiny leaves. She could still see beyond the tree, which she liked. It was like a one way mirror. They could see everyone below and outside of the tree, but they couldn't see them. "Sorry," she said quickly. "It's kind of a habit. I like my privacy. We can still see out, they just can't see in. I can move it back if you want." When she spoke her voice was soft and distant, as if she was drifting away. When she moved to America she started climbing trees at her new house. There were many kinds: short, tall, fat, thin, old, new, oak, maple, etc. She didn't care what kind of tree she climbed, as long as she was hidden. She hated when her parents saw her in the trees and fished her out. It always bugged her, but when she found out what she could do she moved the tree's limbs so they could hide her from the world. It was odd how much comfort it gave her. It was like she had a secret hiding spot, out in the open. She hoped Landon didn't mind. If he thought of it was weird or anything, she didn't know how she would handle it. For once, Danielle actually cared what a guy thought of her. Usually it was no big deal, but Landon wasn't like the others. He was one of a kind.
