Dawnsong

Dawnsong inclined his head.

"Greetings, Robin. I am called Dawnsong."

After the introductions were complete, Dawnsong took to the air and followed as Red Robin led the way to Manhattan on his motorcycle.

Manhattan

In the dim, flickering light of the lab's interior, unconscious bodies could be seen sprawled on the ground. Stepping over them, a figure shrouded in black and masked with a skull-like face made his way to the safe. Using a mysterious instrument, he soon had the safe open and lost no time in removing its contents.

"Good," said a voice in his ear. "Now you have the xenothium core you wanted. I fulfilled my part of the bargain. You will fulfill yours."

"Yes," said Red X. "What should I do?"

"Exit the building. Your colleagues are waiting there. The Titans have received a distress signal and will be arriving shortly. You will kill any Titans on sight."

"And if we fail to kill them?"

"You will wish you had." Click.

Red X snorted and shrugged his shoulders. He didn't really need this guy's attitude, but then again, it had been decent of his mysterious employer to give him the location of one of the few xenothium sources left in the city. Besides, by wiping out the Titans, he would be making his own job easier, thus killing two birds with one stone.

He made his way back to the street in front of the lab where Shyft was already waiting. They hadn't spoken much, both of them preferring to work alone. On this mission, however, they would have to cooperate to destroy any of the Titans that showed up. In addition to the two of them, there were gunmen hidden around the lab waiting for a crucial moment to catch a Titan off guard. Red X's employer had said that he merely wanted to judge the Titans' strength, but in Red X's view, any Titan unlucky enough to respond to the call here was pretty much dead.

A low rumbling noise drifted in on the wind.

"Here they come," said Red X. "Red Robin's bike, by the sound of it."

"And one in the sky."

Red X glanced up and saw someone swooping into view. He didn't recognise the costume.

"Must be a new member. Picked a bad day to join. I'll take Robin, you take the new boy."

Red X was already sprinting across the street. As Robin's bike came into view, he detached a couple of explosives from his belt and hurled them at the bike.

Dawnsong

Out of nowhere, two arms appeared and clamped around Dawnsong's throat, dragging him out of the sky. He struggled, but before he could get free, he was smashed into the ground. The arms scraped him along the bitumen and lifted him up again, but this time he broke free and saw his opponent, a young man whose arms were stretched to an impossible length. Dawnsong launched a fireball at him, but he slithered out of the way with an oddly liquid motion, his body flowing and stretching like it was made of wax. His torso spun around, driving his fists through the air like iron balls on the ends of a chain, striking Dawnsong on the chin.

Dawnsong flew straight towards his assailant, but before he could reach him, the man's body expanded like a snake's, wrapping itself around Dawnsong's body, clamping his arms to his sides. As the man's body squeezed, Dawnsong felt the breath being crushed out of his lungs. With a burst of furious strength, Dawnsong's body flashed red-hot, and an aura of flame surrounded him. The attacker released his grip, unable to withstand the burning heat. Lashing out, Dawnsong smashed his fists into the man's head, but his opponent's body had taken on the texture of rubber, and Dawnsong's fists harmlessly bounced off it.

Raven struggled to her feet, fury making her energy flow into a black color that absorbed all light. Tendrils of the power crawled from her skin and out from under her cloak while her eyes, now all 4 of them, glowed red, under her cloak. Her lips moved only a little as she chanted one of her many spells.

The woman, Siphon, lit up in Ravens Dark power. She was frozen for the moment, as Raven moved closer to her.

"You speak as if you own him....Let me correct you" Raven said, her voice taking on a dual tone, as if it wasn't just her talking. She flicked her wrist and threw the woman into the building to her left, lifted her again and threw her into the sky, letting her land hard on the pavement.

She sat and watched, ready for her to get up again, but the blood leaking from the woman's mouth made her think she wouldn't be getting up any time soon.

"Dovahkiin, are you alright?" she asked, her back still to him. Her voice still had the duo tone to it, and power vibrated along her skin....and she was ashamed. She had lost control and let out her powers that where, essentially, connected to evil.

The woman's power seemed to draw away Dovahkiin's very essence. This soul rending seemed to tear at his very being and drained him then all the sudden he felt the power drain vanish granting the son of Thor the sweet embrace of freedom from the restraints of the power vacuum. Like a breath of fresh air to a drowning man Dovahkiin relished in the freedom from Siphon's power.

"Dovahkiin, are you alright?"

Spoke a voice that sounded like the enchanting sorceress he knew as Raven yet there was another voice beneath it, echoing it. Dovahkiin looked up to find Raven's back to him as she stood protectively between him and the unmoving body of Siphon. Dovahkiin gritted his teeth but got to his feet with a groan as Iceberg ran over to Siphon. Dovahkiin stepped up to Raven and reached out his hand but her power that was radiating off her seemed to warn him to not approach. The foreboding energy surrounding her sent a chill up the big man's spine yet he pressed on. He would not shy away from her. Dovahkiin feared for her. Feared she may be struggling with her vast power. He stepped forward and put his hand on her shoulder.

"She is dead then...her fight is over... Raven?...."

Dovahkiin's voice was heavy with concern as he waited for a response. For some sign of understanding from the woman.

Red Robin

Upon arriving, Robin hopped off of his motorcycle and threw his bird shaped projectiles toward Red X before charging forth for some close quarters combat. He knew Red X could do most of what he could do from previous encounters, so he couldn’t give him any breaks. The one thing in the back of Robin’s mind though, was the other distress call about the gang members tearing up the streets several blocks away from his location. Things were getting worse, and he couldn’t believe he felt like he actually needed a larger team than he already had.

“What’s your deal Red X?!” Robin shouted in between fighting against his foe. I'm going to have to finish this quickly.

Wonder Girl vs Replica – Two Against One

Replica sat rather comfortably on top of Wonder girl. Her punch must’ve made some serious damage to the heroine because she seemed to have forgotten who she was. Replica wasn’t sure though if she was just faking not knowing her name or if she did hit her a little too hard. Either way it made her mad. She pulled her hand back punching blondie in the same spot again. A small crack could be heard as Wonder Girl’s head smashing into the ground. “Your last words will be my name…” Replica chucked as she placed her hands around the heroine’s throat.

“Ah… Ah… Alice…” Cassie struggled to say before she let out an almost cackled in Replica’s face. “Oops! I meant… to say… BITCH!” Cassie then used both her fists to hit Replica in the stomach. The unsuspected blow caused Replica to let go of Cassie’s throat as the air was knocked out of her. “Now get the fuck off of me.” Cassie said as she grabbed Replica by her collar of her shirt and stood up. Though there was a trickle of blood coming down the heroine’s lips, she managed to retain a smile, especially while she held her opponent up off the ground. “Come on, you’re stronger than this.” Cassie said before tossing Replica aside and taking the time to look at her own reflection through the glass window of a store. She brushed some dirt of her jeans and even wiped the trickle of blood from her mouth. “You got me good though.”

Replica was caught of guard hearing her proper name being called. How could she know that? Only a few people know my true identity. From the confused she didn’t notice Wonder Girl’s hands hitting her into the stomach. The quick and sudden impact winded her as she was knocked of the blondie. Replica stopped herself from hitting a nearby bench with her hands. She is talking to me like she knows me personally. Replica rose to her feet aggravated by the way Wonder Girl was acting. Only moments ago she seemed bewildered, however now she was being way too cocky for her own good. Blood trickled down Alice’s arms and hands from being scrapped on the gravel as she tried to stop herself. She ignored the pain as she just sinfully grinned at Wonder Girl before flicking her hair over her shoulder. “I wish I could say the same to your attack…but those punches just felt mosquito bites.” All of the sudden her right arm transformed into a golden blade. She very seductively licked the top of the blade with her tongue as she just stared at Wonder Girl, “Is that your natural hair colour?” Without another word she sprinted towards the heroine, and then moved through her as Replica’s body seemed to become intangible. Once she was behind Wonder girl she flung her blade around and cut a chunk of her blonde hair off. “Look at me I’m Wonder Girl,” she mocked as she placed the hair next to her own before it changed blonde like Wonder girl’s hair. “Hahaha,” she chucked before kicking her in the back.

Cassie was surprised by the quick and tactical movements of Replica, and didn’t even notice her hair was cut until after she got up off the ground from the kick to her back. Cassie would have grunted under normal circumstances, but she just laughed. “My hair? Really?! Do you think I give a shit about my hair?” Cassie asked rhetorically as she noticed Replica had shifted into her. “So you wanted to be me so bad? I liked you in your regular form… It was easier to pound on that face of yours.” Cassie taunted before using wrapping her whip around a trash can and launching it toward Replica. She used the distraction to run forward and pounce with her fist covered in sparks. “Oi mate!”

Replica was getting irritated with Wonder Girl’s laughter, from what she had seen on the news the heroine seemed to be acting rather stranger than her usually self. There was something up with her but Alice couldn’t quite put her finger on it just yet. “Omg, how did you know?...Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be a stuck up bitch like you.” Replica’s body altered itself so she now looked like Wonder Girl, “TWINS!” She noticed out of the corner of her eye the trash can flying towards her and quickly took a step back to dodge it, however Wonder Girl was a little too quick for her and Replica ended up getting hit a few times. With every punch and spark, her body transformed itself. She first turned into Robin, then Connor, then Raven and so worth. But since she didn’t quite know their names she just said, “Do you like me better now?....How about now?..Now?” The punches hurt a little but she just tried to laugh it off but all off the sudden hearing her mock her accent made her loose concentration and Replica found herself hit the ground from one of the punches.

“Haha! You think I care which form you take? I’m just gonna keep swinging… or not.” Cassie said after landing a few punches and backing away with a sigh. “I’m bored now. You’re like no fun once things get heated up. And I’d hate to ruin that face of yours… Wait! One question though, Replica. All these people dead, shops destroyed. I even heard you planned attacks on other boroughs. All for what? He’s just another guy. I’m sure he’s not that important or even worth the time. Not worth the effort either. Just be a good girl and go back to HQ. I’m sure you have a guy in his place already.”

Replica just sat up on the ground for a moment hearing as Wonder Girl seemed to be going on a little rant. She was feeling rather tired now and drowned out Wonder Girl’s voice for a little while as she tried to catch her breath. Her attention was immediately drawn back to the heroine hearing her say the words ‘He’s just another guy.’ The words echoed in her mind for a moment as she remember back to when she was in the bedroom with Michael. Those were the last words he said before he was…gone. Her hands turned to fists by her side as she was her normal form again. “You fucken bitch! YOU Don’t know shit.” She leapt onto to her feet and directly at Wonder Girl. The two were sent tumbling into the large water fountain that stood in the middle of the plaza. “You should’ve kept you stupid mouth shut…” Replica wrapped her hands around Wonder Girl’s throat and forced her down into the water. “You messed with the wrong gang…” She pressed down harder feeling Wonder Girl feeling struggling underneath her trying to come up and get some air. Amongst the struggle her mind seemed to wonder off and analysis the entire fight between her and Wonder Girl. All off the sudden it hit her, her hands let go as she moved off Wonder Girl. “This can’t be…” She sat there in the water stunned.

Cassie tried to fight back against Replica’s hold feeling herself running out of breath. Just as she was about to give up, the weight pushing down on her disappeared. Cassie’s head popped up out of the water as she immediately gasped for air. “What the fuck?”

"She's dead.... she's dead... babe?... Babe answer me.... babe?!"

Iceberg said almost manically as he held Siphon's lifeless body. The big man turned and his icy stare turned colder still. His gaze fixed on Raven.

"You bitch... You killed her... YOU KILLED HER!!!!"

He roared as he got up and charged at her. Massive ice spikes forming over his hands as he barreled for the sorceress with murderous intent. The son of Thor rocketed at Iceberg to protect Raven. His fists extended in front of him as he flew at the big man. Iceberg was like a mad bull now, blindly charging ahead, he barely seemed to notice Dovahkiin coming for him at all. Dovahkiin landed a massive blow to the man's jaw taking him clean off his feet and sending him flying through the building across from him. Dovahkiin followed, ready to end this fight. He met Iceberg and the two exchanged a quick salvo of blows, neither giving an inch until Iceberg landed a shot to Dovahkiin's gut causing the half elder God to back pedal in pain. Iceberg pressed his advantage but to no avail. Dovahkiin had recovered quickly and as Iceberg came down in hopes to skewer him with an ice spike Dovahkiin reached up and grabbed hold of his forearm before coating his fist in lighting and sending three savage blows into the man's face all the while holding firm so he wouldn't go anywhere. After the third blow Dovahkiin let loose his hold and sent a kick to the big man's chest, sending him flying back into a parked truck. Iceberg groaned in pain and rubbed the bruised and bloody remains of his face.

"Ya think I'm gunna let you stop me blondie?... Nah see, I'm gunna kill you... then I'm gunna tear that little purple slut to ribbons. Ya hear me?!"

Dovahkiin's fists clenched as he glared at Iceberg yet when he spoke his voice was as calm as steady water.

"Nay mortal.... I have no plans to die today nor will any harm befall Raven. Ragnarok will befall us all before the son of Thor allows that to happen."

With the last words the air around Dovahkiin sprang to life and lighting began to arc off his body as it began generating massive amounts of it. Every piece of metal around him began catching sparks from the raw power. Iceberg looked around in concern but his anger at the loss of Siphon gave him the false bravery to rise to his feet and charge Dovahkiin again. In an instant Dovahkiin roared and a massive lightning bolt shot from his hands and burned clean through Icebergs chest. The man was dead before he hit the ground in one massive heap. Dovahkiin took a breath, savoring the battle lust before turning to look at Raven who was still down the street.

Raven winced. She heard the battle going on but couldn't bring herself to intervene. She simply stared at the lifeless body before her. She had taken a life, yet again, with her powers. She would have let the large man take her down, if it hadn't been for Dovahkiin.

Her body wracked with shutters and she knelt over her eyes watering. She let her energy dissipate and landed lightly on the ground before falling to her knees.

She stared at her hands in shock. Yes she had battled before, harmed before, but never had she let her emotions get so out of control. She almost attacked Dovahkiin, out of sheer lust for more violence and death. The shock of that thought had brought her out of her haze but put her in a mood that made everything seem like it was in shades of gray....and so she just sat there staring down, unsure what to do with herself and unable to even melt through the ground.

Dovahkiin made his way down the street towards Raven. The sorceress was on her knees, her entire body shaking with raw emotion. Dovahkiin knew not what the cause of this was nor how to help her but his heart felt for her none the less. He knelt in front of her yet she would not look up. Her just staring at the cold concrete beneath her.

"Raven?...Raven?..."

Dovahkiin spoke softly his words, warm yet the worry was blatant. There was no response from the sorceress, no sign that she even recognized his presence. The son of Thor knew battle, knew violence and war yet this was something he knew little of. He reached out his hand and ever so gently touched the bottom of her chin tenderly lifting her head up just enough for her to make eye contact with him.

"Raven... It is all right now... Everything is going to be alright."

The entire tender moment was being carefully observed and monitored. The connection between the Son of Wonder Woman and Raven was carefully noted and cataloged by the shadowy figure lurking in distance.

Replica – The Revelation
Replica rose from the water with a rather wicked grin on her face. She didn’t make eye contact with Wonder Girl as she gracefully leaped out of the fountain. “Tell your boss to watch himself missy. There’s a Virus going around, and I don’t think he wants to catch it.” With a flick of her wet hair she strutted away walking to her injured gang members. Sadly the two men did not make it. She knelt down next to each one, closing their eyes before whispering into their ear, “You are the true heroes.” Once she was done saying goodbye, she hailed down the nearest vehicle. She then threw out the driver into the street as she hopped in and sped away.

As she was speeding down the street heading home, Alice quickly message her fellow Virus members that were out fighting to retreat and head home. Once she arrived at the HQ and made herself to the front door she could sense something strange in the air. Tyrone… However, she ignored the thought and flung the door open beaming rather happily even though only hours earlier she had heard a dear friend of hers had die. “Sasha, don’t fret….everything has worked out for the best,” she was about to give the poor girl a hug however out of the corner of her eye she stopped the one and only Tyrone. Alice froze as she stared at him; he didn’t look very happy which meant she was going to get her ass whipped.

Wonder Girl – Confused
Cassie sat in the water trying to catch her breath before looking up and hearing the girl speak to her. “What do you mean?....Hey? I don’t understand.” She called after her but she had already gone. “Man, my head hurts,” She rubbed her temples for stepping out of the fountain. Her eyes trailed around, viewing the damage. I didn’t cause all of this, or did I? Cassie shook her head trying to get her thoughts organised but her head and body seemed to be throbbing with pain that it made it hard for her to think. In the distance she could hear the sirens of the police and ambulance coming. They can clean this us, I need to rest. She stretched her arms into the air before taking off, she headed straight back to the titan tower.

Cassie was glad to see that the power was back on, however as she made her way to the main lounge air it looked like everyone else had gone out. She exhaled deeply before taking two steps and flopping down onto the couch. As soon as she hit the couch, she fell asleep.

Red X

Red X readied himself as Robin darted swiftly out of the way of the explosives and headed towards him. Red X sent three shurikens whirling in Robin's direction, but they missed by inches and embedded themselves in the road.

Red X snickered. "It's nothing personal, bird boy. You just have powerful enemies. With Bats and Super gone, you could have taken the hint and gotten out of town. You have a lot of money tucked away, you could have bought a nice life for yourself. But you decided to make yourselves a target. Always playing the hero. That's the trouble with you people. Being noble and stupid gets you in a whole lotta trouble."

Red X made a downward flicking motion with his right wrist, and a poison dart appeared. He fired it at Robin, then whirled and launched a stunning kick in his direction.

Dawnsong

Dawnsong clamped his fingers around Shyft's throat, bracing against the weight, then heaved with his whole body, sending the rubbery mutant flying through the air. Shyft smashed into the front of a building on the other side of the street, but he immediately bounced to the road, landing in a fighting stance, apparently unharmed by the impact.

"What are you?!" Dawnsong shouted at him in frustration.

"Your undertaker," Shyft growled.

Dawnsong roared and fired two blasts of flame at his opponent, but Shyft's elastic body snapped easily out of the way.

I hurt him when I burned him, Dawnsong realised. That's why he's staying far away, out of range of my firepower. But how can I make him stand still long enough for me to hit him again?

Dawnsong cast around for an object to throw and settled on a nearby car. Lifting it into the air, he threw it at Shyft with all his strength. Shyft reacted immediately, his limbs lengthening and body stretching into a new configuration. His hands reached out and wrapped around the car before swinging it around in a wide arc, redirecting its force back towards Dawnsong. And the end of the arc, Shyft let the car go, and it flew back towards the one who'd thrown it. Dawnsong had little time to react. The car clipped the edge of his legs as it flew past, knocking him to the street. As he fell, he aimed another fireball at Shyft, who merely dodged.

Curses. Now my leg hurts and I'm no closer to pinning him down. Dawnsong's mind raced, trying to come up with a plan.

Raven winced but made herself focus on the voice calling her. Her eyes settled on Dovahkiin and stayed there.

"I killed her..." She murmured and tried to grip the reality of it. Then it was gone. the shock, the hate, the fear, the loathing. gone. She stood stiffly and gathered her energy around herself.

"We need to help the others" she said her voice devoid of emotion. Back to her normal Raven self.

Dovahkiin's eye brow arched as he stared at the woman. She appeared to be resolved. No different than how she should normally be yet he knew she was hiding something. Suppressing something. Dovahkiin was not aware that she had never taken a life. He wondered if any of the other Titan's had ever killed. Dovahkiin was a warrior, raised for battle. Death was a part of war. There was no way around that. It was a neccesary outcome of many conflicts yet the first life you take can shudder a man's soul and cause them to doubt their steel. Dovahkiin mad a mental note to speak with her later in hopes his experience with the burden that death brought on a warrior may be of some comfort to her. Dovahkiin nodded in agreement after Raven told him that they needed to help the others.

"Aye, there is still battle afoot and our allies may need our aid. Lead the way Raven, I shall follow."

Red Robin

Robin kept up with Red X’s movements, as always. The one thing he never enjoyed about combating this nemesis was the fact that it was like fighting himself. When Red X tried to attack him using poisonous darts, Robin was quick to dodge them by hopping back, but that left him off the ground as Red X followed with a kick. He grunted before using his hands to thrust the Red X’s heel up in order to maneuver him into a sloppy back flip. This move however, caused Robin to land on his back. He didn’t let the landing stop him from continuing his assault as he sat up and reached for the dart that had missed him earlier. He then moved in for the kill, ready to thrust the dart into Red X. Robin was finished with talking and asking questions, he’d stop doing that a long time ago.

Splinter

Tyrone Wilson’s eyes focused on Alice as she entered the base. He didn’t look pleased to see her at all. A tinge of disgust could almost be seen on his cold shrewd face as he and Alice locked eyes.

“I see you make orders like you run shit. You runnin’ shit? Huh?! Why the fuck did I get a call from one of my connections saying that he can’t make deals with us anymore? You went out with some of my best men and fucked up MY streets! For what?! My son?! You think that kid deserves to be avenged? Mourned, I get it. Avenged though? He got himself killed because he was foolish… It probably would have happened sooner or later with him doing whatever you told him to while you opened up those legs of yours.” Tyrone said before spitting on the ground. “Consider yourself at the bottom of the totem pole now, because you’re not calling any shots.” Tyrone said before looking at Sasha and pointing to her. “She doesn’t call any god damned shots, you hear me?!”

“Yeah…” Sasha said with an intimidated look on her face. She really didn’t know if she’d be able to get over what happened today. Everyone else in the headquarters just watched in silence. One guy managed to snicker at Replica’s predicament.

“I’m out! I gotta fix the shit you did now.” Tyrone said before walking out the door with a handful of gang members following behind him.

Replica

Alice stood there staring at the Virus leader as he began his little rant. She didn’t understand what his problem was with her. Every time he dropped in he always seemed to have a go at her. Maybe it was the fact that Michael accepted her into the gang without his father permission. No matter what his reasons were it was starting to really piss her off. She wished the man would just retire already and go home.

She rolled her eyes hearing him speak about how one of his connections didn’t want to do business with them anymore because of what she did. It’s always business with him. Funny how he has done dealings for so many decades and the city is still not his. If only he would open his eyes and realise a new approach is needed. Her hands turned into fists by her side hearing him talk about what a foolish man his son was. She so badly wanted to open her mouth and tell him what he was saying wasn’t true. However, she knew her words would just in one ear and then out of the other. Michael never listened to her, no matter how many times she ‘opens her legs’ he always did what he wanted. If she did have Michael wrapped around her little finger she would’ve gotten rid of Tyrone a long time ago. She was trying her hardest not to just leap out at him and tackled him to the ground before beating the shit out of him when he basically called her a slut. Watch your back! Alice flicked her hair over her shoulder and kept her eyes locked on his, to show that she wasn’t afraid of him.

She didn’t look to surprise at the fact he was stripping her from her power. It wasn’t really like she was top dog anyway; people just seemed to listen to her all the time because they know of her bad temper. Let’s see how long it will take for your empire to crumble without me keeping them in line. Alice smirked a little but it immediately dropped as she heard someone behind her snicker. Her head shot around at the group of gang members. Her eyes glaring at the group as they immediately off move a little left and right to reveal the one who mocked her.

Once Tyrone left, Alice turned and strutted towards the guy who had laughed. “What’s so funny?” She moved her head in so her lips were right next to his ear, “Just cause I’m on the bottom doesn’t make me your bitch.” Without a warning she kneed him in his private area and then grabbed the back of his head and slammed it into a nearby wooden table corner. The guy fell to the ground in agony but she wasn’t done yet. Alice dragged him back to his feet by the neck and smashed his head against the wall. The gang member fell to the floor unconscious. “Now you’re my bitch.” She turned to the rest of the group, “anyone else care for a laugh.” Everyone seemed to turn their heads away. “Didn’t think so….what’s the plan Sasha?” Alice didn’t mean to sound rude but she couldn’t help but be a little upset about not being able to call the shoots anymore. She slumped down on the couch and began to watch television.

Red X

The first thing Red X noticed was that Robin had gotten better. A lot better. His movements were fluid and strong as he countered Red X's every move.

He's not holding back. Looks like he really wants to kill me now. Huh. I didn't think Mr Hero had it in him.

Red X was thrown off balance as Robin grabbed his heel and forced him into a backflip. He righted himself, angry at being caught off guard, and ready to strike back. Then he saw Robin inches from him with the dart in his hand. He had no time to react before Robin struck, plunging the dart through a weak point in Red X's armour (of course he'd know, he designed it... ). Red X felt the tip of the dart prick his skin.

Damn it! He had five seconds before the neurotoxin reached his lungs and another twenty before he suffocated. Desperately, he threw a smokebomb to the ground and fell back, hoping to distract Robin and buy himself some time. The air around him filled with thick, choking white fog, but he ignored it as he scrabbled in his cloak for the antidote. He was wide open to an attack now, and Robin had already shown that he was willing to go for the kill. He must have known the dart was poisoned, but he'd used it anyway, the little shit! Red X was going to pay Robin back for this... if he survived...

He was already feeling the first iron band squeeze his lungs as he extracted a small vial from a hidden pocket in his cloak. He brought the vial to his lips, but as he opened his mouth, his lungs convulsed, making him double over with pain, sending the vial spinning away. He'd only managed to swallow half the antidote, and he'd coughed up some of it, too. Damn that Robin! He sank to ground, his lungs feeling like they were being crushed in a steel vice. With only half the dose of antidote in his system, he'd just die more slowly and painfully.

"Help me," he croaked.

"I've lost visual on Robin. Smoke bomb. He was too close to the friendly anyway."

"Switch targets. The other one's out in the open. And the friendly's clear."

"Switching targets."

Dawnsong

Dawnsong climbed to his feet. He'd been on the ground for a full ten seconds, but Shyft had made no move to attack him, staying well clear. Why? Perhaps he was afraid of being burned again. Well, he wouldn't escape the wrath of Dawnsong.

Dawnsong slowly rose into the air, golden fire flaring around his fists as he stared at his enemy.

"You should have taken me when you had the chance," he called out. "Now you'll see my true power -"

Bang!

Something struck Dawnsong's back with the force of a cannon, sending waves of burning pain through his body. Dimly, he was aware of crying out, and when he opened his eyes he was somehow lying on the ground in a pool of something wet. The liquid was red and sticky.

Blood. My blood.

Every time he took a breath, another ripple of pain pulsed through his body.

The two warriors were just bait. There were others in the background, waiting for us. They shot me. A trap. I wonder how Robin is.

There was no way Dawnsong could win this fight on his own. He couldn't even take Shyft, and now there were others to contend with. He needed help, but he had no communicator or means of contacting anyone. Gritting his teeth against the pain, he turned his body and gazed up at the blue sky. It seemed so peaceful and far away. With all his effort, he raised his right hand and pointed it up. Golden light flickered around it, coalescing into a ball of fire. He launched the fire upwards, where it rose high into the sky and hung there, a golden orb shining above the city like a miniature sun, sending out flares of light. Hopefully someone would see his distress signal and come to investigate.

Suddenly, his view of the sky was blocked. Shyft stood above him.

"Sorry, kid."

Dawnsong mumbled, "I'm not a kid. I am Dawnsong, son of Apollo and the lady Sophia... "

Then Shyft's hands were closing around Dawnsong's face, his fingers slithering around Dawnsong's throat, choking him, cutting off his air supply, smothering him...

The lighting caught Shyft right in the back causing the man to shout in pain and surprise as he was sent flying into a nearby car. Dovahkiin landed beside Dawnsong, chest puffed out boldly as he stared in the direction of where Shyft. Raven and Dovahkiin had only just arrived to find Dawnsong near unto death and Robin locked in a mortal battle with Red X. The son of Thor knelt beside the Son of Apollo and helped him to his feet.

"There, on your feet. I trust those... scratches haven't made you useless hmm?"

He asked with a warm smirk making light of Dawnsongs numerous injuries as only old warriors do. While Red X barely seemed to notice the new arrivals Shyft pulled himself out of the wreckage to glare at Dovahkiin.

"You're going to have to wait your turn big man. Jr there and I have unfinished business. Once he's staring at his own guts I'll get to you."

He said as got to his feet. Dovahkiin's eyebrow arched at the man's boldness. Despite the powers he'd been witnessing in the mortals of Midgard he was still shocked at the boldness and blatant disrespect shown to the Gods that walked among them.

"Nay mortal. I have no plans to die today nor will I allow an ally to fall. Yield now."

Shyft just chuckled.

"That's not going to happen."

As if on cue bullets began raining on the trio. Dovahkiin snarled in frustration at the cowardice of this Shyft refusing to fight him fairly. The bullets impacted and crumpled into Dovahkiin's flesh doing little more than causing brief instances of pain. The rounds did not pierce the skin yet the pain and bruises that would result from them began to harbor a distaste for the mortal weapons technology in the son of Thor.

Raven set up a simple shield in front of her, and the bullets reflected easily. She melted into the ground and came up behind the man, Shyft, with no sound whatsoever. She highlighted the ground beneath his feet with her power and threw the piece of pavement, with him on it, into a wall to her left.
“Surrender…I don’t want to hurt you” she said her cloak billowing open in the slight wind her attack had created. Her hood had fallen back and she stared at the place where shyft was thrown.

Red Robin

Robin was wary of whether his strike would do his nemesis in, but he figured it was better to prepare for the worst. He stepped back for a moment, but that didn’t help him at all against the smoke bombs that were thrown to the ground. The black smog was near impossible to see through, making Robin rather cautious of a sneak attack. Taking the time to listen to his surrounding, all he managed to hear was the fight between Shyft and Dawnsong. The thought made him think of how his ally was doing, but only for a second as he knew his main focus would need to be on Red X’s next move… That’s if there was a next move. Robin coughed a bit from the smog, but then used his cloak to cover his mouth and nose so he could breathe clearer.

“Show yourself, Red X! Don’t be a cowa-” Robin cut himself off as he heard someone croak the words, ”Help me,” knowing that it couldn’t be anyone but his enemy. Stepping forward toward where he heard the voice, he drew his birdarang sword with his free hand. He needed to be cautious, as this could be a set up of some kind. The smog was beginning to lighten up, but before it did Robin had found Red X looking helpless on the ground. “Isn’t this a sight to see?” Robin’s voice was muffled by his cape as he said this. Robin stared down at his enemy before shaking his head and stabbing his sword down toward the criminal. The sword had stabbed into Red X’s cape though, pinning him to the ground. “It’s the poison isn’t it? So this is what I would have looked like if you got me with that dart? I should leave you like this for that much. You’d deserve it in a way.” Robin paused before pulling his sword from Red X’s cape and walking away from the villain and into the smog. “Sounds like a plan.” Robin said coldly as he vanished into the smog, heading for Dawnsong. Things were looking grim for Red X…

Robin didn’t like showing his sympathy on his enemies, but he wouldn’t stoop to their level. He wasn’t bothered with killing his enemy, but it wasn’t something that was necessary. Exiting the smog, he could see Dawnsong, Raven, and Dovahkin fighting Shyft. Robin looked down at his communicator, checking the status of the city streets, only to find that the gang violence had subsided in all the boroughs. The young hero was in relief, but only before he witnessed bullets rain down on the group from up above. “Hmm…” Robin let out before darting into a nearby alley unnoticed before using a grapple to get up to the top of the building. While scaling the wall, he envied the flyers of his team as it might have been faster. When Robin reached the rooftop, he jumped up and threw two birdarangs, hitting two armed men

“Oh shit!” One of the unharmed men shouted as the several others’ attentions centered on Robin. The titan landed before sprinting toward them with smoke pellets and some kind of disk in his hands. Robin wasted no time throwing the freeze disc and pellets to the ground in front of him and using the ice he had made on the rooftop to slide beneath a hail of bullets coming his way. Not only had he avoided getting shot, but he had also gotten close enough to the criminals to use his bo staff to incapacitate them quickly. He hoped his effort would help his teammates with their battle against Shyft, as he had something or rather someone to address. Robin jumped from the rooftop and used his cape to glide and land in front of none other than Red X.

“If you thought I was like one of you scum, you were wrong.” Robin said as he pulled out a small syringe and inserted the needle into the same spot he had pricked Red X with the poison dart. “If it’s the poison I think your using, my version of the antidote should keep you from dying… I want answers though, and you’re going to give me all of them.”

In a red and yellow blur that appeared out of the shadows Robin had taken down the bulk of Shyft's men that had been firing at the heroes. With the distraction neutralized for the most part Raven, Dovahkiin and Dawnsong could focus on Shyft who was, at the moment, hurtling towards the trio. His body had stretched outward as if he was some massive serpent intent on constricting the heroes and ending the fight in one move. Unfortunately for Shyft he had little hope of defeating all three heroes at once. Dovahkiin extended both his hands and lighting arced from his fingertips in a continuous flow of white hot current that connected with Shyft and stopped him dead in his tracks. Shyft screamed in pain as the electricity coiled and arced around his body, unable to move as Dovahkiin's power held him in thrall and leaving him vulnerable to the attacks of the half Asgardian's allies.

Dawnsong

Dawnsong gratefully accepted Dovahkiin's help and regained his feet. The Thunderer had come out of nowhere, accompanied by the dark sorceress, and had probably saved Dawnsong's life by hurling Shyft away. Dawnsong's back was still throbbing with pain and blood was seeping from his wounds, but he didn't want to show his weakness in front of these two mighty warriors.

"It'll take more than a few scratches to finish me," he said to Dovahkiin, managing a weak smile. He didn't stay smiling for long, though. More bullets began raining down on them, but Raven deflected them with a shield of shadows before going after Shyft. Robin appeared out of nowhere and incapacitated most of the gunmen before disappearing again.

Shyft charged Raven, Dovahkiin and Dawnsong, expanding his body into a huge coiled shape in order to entrap them, but Dohavkiin swiftly stopped him with a barrage of thunderbolts, making him scream as he was rooted in place.

Now's my chance, thought Dawnsong. Thrusting his hands before him, he gathered all the energy he could muster. Golden fire exploded from his outstretched hands and arced towards Shyft, slamming into him, wrapping around him, wreathing him in a column of brilliant flames that rose high into the sky. Shyft's voice took on an even more agonising tone. The combination of lightning and flame was too much for his body. His skin blackened, burned and peeled away. His blood and bodily fluids boiled to a mist as his flesh was scorched to cinders. In a few moments there was nothing left of him but a lump of charred, misshapen flesh hissing on the street.

Breathing heavily, Dawnsong lowered his hands, his eyes glued to the remains of Shyft, his anger subsiding. The sight of the dead man sickened him. He had never willingly killed before.

I did that, he thought, his face darkening with emotion.

Red X

Slowly, he regained consciousness, his surroundings swimming back into focus. His body was still paralysed and wracked with pain, but it would wear off eventually.

Someone was standing close to him. Someone wearing a very familiar red, green and yellow uniform.

Shit, thought Red X. He saved me. And now I'm in his power.

"Answers?" Red X wheezed. Normally his mind would be racing, looking for an escape route, but his brain felt sluggish and stupid from the poison. "You can ask me all the questions you want. Doesn't mean I'll have the answers you're looking for, though."

Dovahkiin watched at the display of raw power exhibited by his friend and ally Dawnsong. Under the might of the power of the son of Apollo the mortal was reduced to little more than a smoldering cinder. The big half Asgardian nodded in approval as he put a hand on Dawnsong's shoulder. The son of Thor noticed the apprehension and even regret on the face of his friend as he stared at the body.

"Trouble yourself not brother. The mortal held no chance of victory. Against the might of the Gods there is no hope. We are warriors born, sons of Gods we two. Our deaths will not come to the weak but to the mighty and when we fall it will be with sword in hand. On that dark day brother when shields shatter and the crows feast on the blood of the Gods we shall enter Odin's hall and stand proudly before our ancestors."

Dovahkiin's words were like an oath of times long past as he gave his new friend a bold smile truly looking forward to the battle the two would engage in.

Robin scowled at Red X before just shaking his head. He paced around a bit angered that he even let the guy live. He then stopped in his tracks and looked back at the criminal.

“Alright… What were you doing here? What was your plan?” Robin asked. "I'll start off with those. Take too long and I might not be in time to administer the second half of my antidote.... And yes, I just said 'second half.'"

Red X

Red X laughed weakly, but it turned into a wheezing cough.

"Second half?" he said. "I should've known. You've gotten a lot harder, bird boy. Maybe it's for the best." He sighed and shook his head, the movement sending tendrils of pain creeping through his chest. "It's over for me now, one way or the other. My employers aren't going to be too happy with the outcome of this assignment. See, I was supposed to take you down, not the other way round. I don't think I'll be around much longer. Stiill, I guess I don't have to be. You'll be here in my place." The skull-like mask turned, seeking Robin's face.

"You've changed. The line between good and evil was supposed to be clear for you. You were the good guy, I was a bad guy, to be taken down like all the other bad guys. But look at you now. The old Robin would have turned me over to the police... okay, the police these days are corrupt and untrustworthy. But the old Robin wouldn't have interrogated me by threatening me with death. That's not the kind of thing that heroes are supposed to do. You're willing to do anything to get what you want, even kill people in your power. Which begs the question. How are you any different from me? What's the point of fighting villains if you turn into one yourself?"

Red X laughed bitterly. "You may have beaten me, but I turned you into something you hate. So I guess, in the end, we both lose..."

***

The figure in the shadows steepled his fingers thoughtfully. On the screen before him, a number of windows glowed with the hidden faces of his employers.

"This is a disaster," one of them hissed. "Not only have the Titans neutralised our forces throughout the city, they have eliminated over fifteen of our men - "

"Mere riff-raff," the seated figure said calmly. "Trained gorillas with guns. The only real loss were the meta-humans, and none of them were very high level. This is war, gentlemen. We must be willing to sacrifice a few pawns if we are to advance our campaign."

"Shyft is dead!" another voice on screen snapped. "And based on the report, Red X has been incapacitated by Robin! Supposing the Titans interrogate him. What if we are implicated in their investigation?"

"I have already assured you, you are in no danger. The Police Minister is sympathetic to our cause. He understands our position. As for Red X, the Titans will learn nothing from him."

"How can you be so sure? He's a mercenary, with no loyalty to you. You should have picked your men more carefully."

"I trust mercenaries most of all. They are honest about what they want, and when you know what someone wants, you control him. In Red X's case, he thought he was obtaining a xenothium core. In fact, the xenothium he acquired is spiked with a toxin of my own invention, which has already infiltrated his suit and will kill him in approximately thirty seconds."

"I see. Well..."

"I trust you have no further objections?"

"The fact remains that the Titans have devastated our forces."

"As expected. This is phase one of our operation. We never intended to defeat the Titans, merely to gauge their strength. Robin has been busy filling his team with new members. We have gathered a great deal of intelligence on all of them. Phase two is already in preparation. You will have your city, gentlemen."

"This is not about the city. You know that. Whoever controls Titans Tower controls the world."

"All the more reason to rejoice. You will soon have your world."

"We'll hold you to that."

The screen went blank.

Wintergreen walked slowly into the room, holding a steaming cup of tea.

"Tea, Master Deathstroke."

"Thank you."

"If I may be so bold as to ask a question..."

"Go ahead."

"Why are you cooperating with this Virus gang? What's in it for you?"

"You heard the man. There's a world at stake." Deathstroke raised the cup to his lips and sipped the tea.

"But for me, this is much more personal," he continued. "The Titans and I go back a long way. I want revenge. I want their heads. But most of all..."

Slade's eye narrowed.

"I want Robin."

***

Red x said, "You see, Robin, those who fight monsters have to take care they don't - aaargh!"

Red X's body began twitching and convulsing rapidly, his limbs jerking and spasming. Horrible cries issued from his mouth as he twisted and turned. White foam bubbled from the mouth slits in his mask, and at last he slumped to the ground and lay unnaturally still.

***

Dawnsong

Dawnsong returned Dovahkiin's smile, but there was still confusion in his mind. He'd always wanted to be a mighty warrior, but now, having seen the pain and devastation battles could cause, he wondered if it would be too much for his sensitive nature. The way Dovahkiin smiled as he looked forward to the day on which he died... could Dawnsong ever be like that? True, he would love to see an epic battle and turn it into a song. But he couldn't forget the pain and the blood, and to look forward to his own death! He wondered if he would ever be able to delight in the pure joy of war as Dovahkiin did. Somehow, he didn't think so.

"Let us check on Robin and the other Titans," he said. "How did your mission go? Did you discover anything unusual?" He looked from Dovahkiin to Raven as he spoke, though he knew the witch was quiet and kept mostly to herself.

“We should see if the others need assistance.” She murmured and then she was gone, headed over to Robin’s location.

Red Robin

Robin looked down at Red X as he avoided his questions. It was frustrating him, but what the criminal was saying was cutting deep into him. The fact that it did made him question himself. He was Red Robin, leader of the Teen Titans, heir to Bruce’s empire, and the city’s well known vigilante. More than anything though, he was Tim Drake, and that’s what it came down to. Robin’s fists became tighter and tighter before he yelled out.

“Shut up!” With that, Robin thought his words had silenced the villain before watching Red X’s body tremble. What was going on? Was it the poison? These questions rattled in his mind as he got the second injection out and knelt down. Unfortunately, it was too late… “Red X!” Robin shouted as he checked the pulse of his nemesis. “Shit!” Robin said before punching the ground beside the dead criminal. Guilt soon flooded his mind, blinding his common sense.
