γβFor there is no friend like a sister
In calm or stormy weather;
To cheer one on the tedious way,
To fetch one if one goes astray,
To lift one if one totters down,
To strengthen whilst one stands.βγ

{Compassionate, Protective, Self-Deprecating, Stubborn, Intelligent, Warm}
By nature, Jo has always been a rather compassionate and warm soul. Never to turn a person or creature down if they needed her help, she can be considered one of the go-to people in the Green family. While a few of the others might warrant wary stares and maybe a hint of suspicion, she has always been rather welcoming and friendly. This is what her mother trained her to be - the seemingly easy target. Someone who could easily talk to people. Someone no one would ever suspect. Someone who could be the eyes and ears of the family.
While she genuinely does like meeting new people, it is not always because she requires constant human interaction. Truthfully, despite how open she appears, Jo is actually a lot more closed off and quiet, always opting to observe in large crowds rather than be the life of a party. Which is why she has only ever had a handful of good and truly close friends. Her being an outgoing person is typically used to elicit information, to be able to be there - in the midst of the drama and chaos - and gain information without anyone suspecting a thing. She even, if necessary, chooses particular friends based upon how useful they might turn out to be. Manipulative, yes, but when it comes down to it, this is all about keeping her family safe - even if it means putting herself in danger, much to their chagrin.
You see, while her brother may be the alpha and generally the one who takes care of the family financially, Jo contends herself to being caretaker in terms of being an ever-present face, health and emotional-wise. In her eyes, she needs to be something - do something. So, she pushed herself in school, harder than either of her parents ever asked her. She did careful research on mythological creatures and herbs. She decided that she wants to go to veterinarian school. She does all these things because she feels inadequate in a family filled with werewolves - people who can do more than a normal human. She hates making mistakes and is always her hardest critic, only because she wants to be whatever her family needs her to be. If that means ignoring her own pains and putting herself on the line, then so be it. In her eyes, she is not that important. All that matters is her family.
Picture this: husband and wife, Kayla and Mark Green, both relatively attractive people having their first-born. All werewolves, they were unique amongst a town filled with normal human beings. And then imagine Kayla being pregnant and when she gives birth...oh, snap! Baby girl isn't a werewolf. Do you know how utterly disappointing that was for Jo? Knowing that her senses would never be heightened, that she would not be able to knock a chick's lights out without really trying, or that she wouldn't exactly have all the gifts and struggles that came with being like her family. For the majority of her life, she felt displaced and no matter how much Kayla tried to comfort her, it didn't work. And so how did she take that feeling of unworthiness and displacement?
Jo worked her ass off to never be a burden on her family. She was dutiful in her studies just like her brother, Clark. She learned about the various forms of wolfsbane and why hunters used them. She learned how to treat wounds, for both humans and those of dog relations (ie. her family). She learned to cook to take the stress off her mom. By the time she was fifteen and Clark was getting ready to graduate, Jo was already a member of the National Honor Society, involved in the organization in the nearby city. She would have agreed to even graduate an entire year early when a group of hunters, somewhat inexperienced, kidnapped her. It was a friend, someone she trusted, and whose house Jo was supposed to spend the night. But when she didn't come home, her Dad called to her telepathically. That was the only attribute from her parents' werewolf genes that she had, though it is faint and only comes in times of need. They tested her; she wasn't a werewolf. So, they just fucked with her, knowing that eventually her father would come. And he did - and killed every last one of them. It should have pleased her. They had stabbed Jo and taunted her for her inability to transform. But it didn't.
It was the first day she learned to fear her Dad.
Two years later, Mark had become worse. But Jo tried distracting her siblings; she would use money from her own job and take them to the movies. The only one she ever confided her fears in was Clark. While not being the sociable one, she depended on him. But then Kayla left on business and never came back. That alone aroused suspicion and when she asked Mark, he actually growled and snapped at her; his eyes had bled red and she thought, for a second, he would hit her. She never told Clark. And then there was the camping trip from hell where their father revealed that he did kill Kayla and that he was going to kill them. And even though she should have grieved more - should have tried pleading with him to remember that they were his babies - there was a sort of sick satisfaction that rankled below the pain when Clark ripped their father's throat out.
Now, they're in a new town. Suspicions were aroused back home. Too many people were questioning them, especially the seemingly antisocial Clark. So, Jo hid her acceptance letter from Brown, applied for a nearby college, and took to watching out for her younger siblings as best as she could while Clark worked. It's not easy and while her internship at the local veterinarian clinic only aids in her dream, Jo still thinks about where she could have been. She just won't tell them.
