Introduction
The drive is a long boring one, going deep into the heart of the Arizona desert, where they are to arrive at what used to be a maximum security prison. You could tell they put little to no effort at making it look like a school, the outside and inside was shabby grey concrete. It was surrounded by razor wire and chain link fence, with a large iron gate in the front.
Upon walking in you see the check in desk, and notice the lighting is very dim, as it is everywhere inside, with little to no windows. The woman promptly lists off rules, You are to be in your rooms by 9:00PM, Breakfast is at 8:00Am Lunch 1:00PM and dinner 7:00PM If you do not make it in time for the meals, you will not be provided anything else to eat until the next meal. Any misbehaving children will be sent to the headmaster, who does not take kindly to trouble makers. She also informs you that the school will not start for a week, due to construction, which is apparent by the "Do not Enter staff only" Signs filling most classroom halls ways, she emphasizes that you are NOT allowed to go beyond that point and the punishment is severe if you are found on the other side of the sign. She will then give you a room number, and you make your way to you room.
The cells have been renovated, at least, to look like little bedrooms, each with two beds, two small dressers, a small window about the size of a DVD case, and a bathroom consisting of a toilet, sink, mirror and a shower. Oddly enough, they don't separate the boys form the girls, and some boys have been paired in the same room as a girl. Everyone thinks they will be here to learn their powers, and how to control them, but there is a darker more twisted plot in the midst.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 19 authors
She watched as her forest terrain she called home, vanish completely and turn to ugly dirt for miles with cacti and the like, they had been driving on a dirt road for quite some time now.. she wondered if they would ever reach their destination. Finally, a dot n the horizon caught her eye, and they soon approached what looked like to be a prison, she grabbed her bags and was escorted inside, where she sighed as the lady droned on and on and on. she look at the time when the lady had dismissed her, it was almost lunch time. She went to her room, 118A and set her bag on the floor and crashed onto the mattress, and closed her eyes as she slipped on her headphones and fell into a relaxed music state.
Marshall was up and preparing breakfast for himself when he heard a knock at the door. He opened it to see two guys dressed in black suites and sunglasses.
βYou must be from the school.β He answered dryly before they could introduce themselves. βWe talked on the phone a few days ago.β
βClose the damn door, Marshall, youβre letting the heat out.β His mom yelled from the living room.
βWonβt you come in?β Marshall asked sarcastically. The two men came in and waited by the door. βYou have an hour to pack and say good bye.β
βIβm already packed, Iβll be down in a few minutesβ He answered, eager to get out. He finished his breakfast and ran upstairs to change and grab his suitcase. He changed into his usual plain black tee shirt and black jeans. He put on a black and white checkered belt and matching bracelet. He threw his music player into the suitcase and did a quick look around to see if he was forgetting anything. Nope he had it all. He grabbed his toothbrush and other bath products from the bathroom and packed them then went down stairs.
βReady.β He said as he met the men at the door.
βArenβt you going to say goodbye?β one of them asked him.
βI guess.β He sighed as if being asked to do a chore. He walked to the other room and stood at the entrance.
βOkay, Iβm leaving. See you guys whenever this thing is over.β He called to them.
βYeah, yeah, have fun at camp.β His mom muttered without looking away from the TV.
βYeah, make sure you write.β His dad mumbled.
He sighed, turned and walked out of the room to the guys from the school.
βLetβs get the hell out of here.β He groaned as he picked up his suitcase and they all left.
He got in the car and watched the coastal city disappear behind them as they drove south to the school. He shed a single tear, not because he was going to miss the life he was leaving behind, but because he wasnβt. He took out his headphones, put them on and closed his eyes. It was a long trip south to the school, he might as well get some sleep.
Her powers only manifested around a year ago. At first she thought she was crazy, seeing random unicorns in the school yard or visualizing her friends with cat ears. As time went on she got the hang of it and it slowly developed. She learned to suppress the images when needed and to make them feel more lifelike at other times. At the point she was on she could keep up a whole scenery illusion on three people for a full half hour. Itβd made her quite tired but she rarely did it. Most of the time it was things for herself, which would last up to three hours without a break or funny little tricks for her grandparents when they were sad.
Thinking of her grandparents she sighed. Sheβd miss them once the men came. She hoped they wouldnβt feel to lonely with her gone. Maya would miss a lot of people to be honest. Her friends, her neighbors, her teachers, even that grumpy police man who guided traffic on Wednesdays. Then again it wouldnβt be all that bad. Sheβd meet people who also had powers like her. This made her happy and she smiled again. A knock on the door shattered the illusion.
βHoney the men from the facility are here for you,β her grandmother spoke softly through the door, obviously suppressing her tears. Maya jumped up and picked up her bags. She quickly opened the door and smiled her grandmother.
βDonβt be sad, Iβll be fine. Itβll be really fun!! Well hopefullyβ¦β¦ but anyway Iβll meet new people and I might get help in improving my abilities. Then you can invite all your friends from Bingo for a magic show,β Maya rambled on to cheer the old woman up.
They went downstairs where two men in black suits were waiting with her grandfather. They were expressionless while her grandfather was obviously not pleased. They hugged for a long while and said their goodbyes. Just one last time, for a longer while, Maya showed them both a pretty illusion of a puppy with angel wings which always made them laugh. Then the men led her out and she entered the car. The windows were darkened and the car didnβt feel very welcoming but Maya hopped in without a second thought. She hoped where she got out wouldnβt be so bad.
When she got out it was already evening. She was hungry and tired, mostly the second. It was the longest trip she had ever made. The school looked pretty scary but the outside didnβt matter, only the people on the inside did. Her escorts werenβt very conversational and Maya felt like she was talking to a wall, the lady inside on the other hand didnβt let her speak at all. Then totally worn out, still trying to keep up her smile, Maya was led to a small room through dark corridors led by a glowing orb only visible to her eyes.
Excuse me, but we have been ordered to take you to the boarding school. We will give you 20 minutes to finish packing. The group of men stared at Utrien with a monotone expression, except for the current speaker which has an underlying stern edge.
Utrien blinked. Will there be plants and animals there? The man shook his head. No thank you, I'm not interested.
That's when the man busted in, the lynx that was hanging off Utrien's shoulder and clothes landed on the floor and hissed at the invaders. One of the bulkier men hoisted Utrien up to to his shoulders, the rest fanned out to pack his belongings.
Utrien was irritated but there wasn't much he could do without causing too much effort, or at least in his eyes. He just let himself be hoisted and pet the squirrel that climbed up the man. Huffing in irritation he waited until they were finished.
I take it i don't have a choice now do I? he questioned. His response was to be carried out towards a van. Heaving a sigh he asked if he could at least keep one of his friends he got his answer.
You can'-, He paused when Utriens face darkened and the animals behind him bristled. can keep one he hesitantly finished.
Utrien switched back to his dazed smile and whistled. A falcon swooped down and landed on his head. Okay, i think i'm ready.
He was boarded in the van and drove off.
As he woke up in his baggy singlet and black boxer shorts, his hair was in its usual messy state, this was how he always had his hair anyway, never bothered trying to style it, besides he liked the way it looked. Some blankets and pillows were on the floor or un-tucked, he was a very restless sleeper. Making his way down stairs, he heard voices, unfamiliar voices. Along with his Dad's voice who sounded quite stressed, alarmed and upset. This in return made Jurou worried an curious. He continued down the stairs and noticed the suspicious, suited looking men. He knew straight away what was going on. He had heard about this happen, being put in action today, but he didn't believe it. "Jurou. I'm sorry, these men need you to go with them."
"Huh? What, why, you can't tell me... that this is serious?" His father's eyes started to tear up as he looked him in the eye and it dawned on him that this was serious. He tried to speak again but his father was too choked up to say anything properly.
"We'll be taking you to the School shortly after you've packed your essentials. Be quick." His father shook his head in disbelief, still trying to hold back his tears. He and Jurou both know this was inevitable and that they were unable to defy these men.
"Okay... I'll. I'll get my things." Jurou made his way upstairs and his Dad followed. He quickly entered his room, grabbed a suitcase and shoved some clothes in it and shoes. A picture of his Mum and Dad were also placed in the luggage, he was in the picture too, he was only five years old at the time, a year later his mother had passed away. This was all he had left of her.
"Jurou. I'm sorry you have to go, I'll miss you. Please remember to write, I'll always reply and send letters as much as I can." His father went up to him and gave him a tight hug, Jurou hugged him back, trying hard not to cry as they parted.
"I will Dad. I promise."
Once he entered the vehicle, he watched as his Dad grew further and further away as they drove off, he saw his Dad, trying to stand strong, waving good by with a weak smile on his face. He knew his father would burst into tears though when he was out of sight, he new his Dad well.
Once they arrived at the School, well looked more like a prison, usually he'd be excited to be in a new, unusual place like this, but this was different. He knew he'd have to get used to being here but he'd always despise the people that put him here. He listened as some woman rambled on about the rules, where he could and couldn't ago, he seriously just ignored her, day dreamed, stared in another direction while she spoke. Suddenly she told him where he will be staying, the room number, woops he needed to pay attention to that. 119A huh, he noticed a few other students had arrived too, perhaps one of their rooms would be just next door to him. He continued wandering around School, looking for the dorms until he finally found his dorm, "ah here we are!" Entered the room and let his stuff fall to the floor next to his bed, closing the door behind him. "What has this shit hole got in store for us..."
She said, sighing with loneliness. She knew that nobody would be home. Her mother and step father are on a cruise, and her sister is always out drinking at 6pm. To her surprise, she heard an answer, but not from the people she wanted to hear it from.
"We're taking you to the school now. Have you got your things?"
Cindy nodded, replying with calmness. "My luggage is upstairs in my room. I shall get it."
Cindy walked upstairs, and turned left into her room. It was small, but it was cozy. Cindy looked down at her luggage, sighing with sadness. Am I really abnormal? she thought to herself. She looked out the window, and for the first time in her life, she had actually thought about running away from her problems. But, she knew that they would only catch up to her.
"What's the holdup?"
"My apologies! I was simply saying goodbye to my room..."
She was going to miss this room, she loved it with a passion. She dragged her luggage along, it rolling quietly along the floorboards. She met eyes with the men in black.
"I hope you understand that just because I have powers, I am not dangerous to society." She spoke with anger to the men, which is not like her.
She felt anger for the government, these people who agreed to this. She felt so mad, that the salt shake starting moving around the table uncontrollably!
"What the hell are you doing?! Make it stop!" The men shouted at her
She tried her best to stop the salt shake, but she wasn't able to, no matter how hard she tried. It went on for a while, until one of the men pulled out a gun and shot the salt shake, "killing" it.
"We need to go now." They dragged her along by the arm. She tried kicking them off, but it was useless, as they took her to the car to drive her off to the school, or to her, a prison for the innocent.
She looked back at her house, as it disappeared in the distance.
A soft morning breeze made a lock of her red hair tickle her nose and made sneeze. She didn't wake up. The warmth of sunlight on her face made her roll over but instead of laying comfortably on her side she felt as if she were flying towards that warm sun, then suddenly she crashed into it or more accurately she crashed into the ground.
"Oh for the love of....Oww!"
She had landed face first onto the gravel road in front of the house after rolling off the small porch step. She sat up, blinked in utter confusion as to why she was outside as opposed to in her bed and looked around. She saw a small black bag that had been hastily packed with what looked like her only hoodie, her black boots and a couple of other pieces of clothes on her right and a white envelope neatly resting on the porch step on her left. She hesitated for about half a minute before she picked it up. She had only gotten mail for two reasons in her life. The first was the monthly paycheck her mom sent to the owner of the house to keep Kat's identity secret. She didn't get a single dime of it of course, it all went into the leech's pocket. The second? A letter telling her she was going to go to a facility for "gifted children" that have such "incredible potential" in order to "benefit mankind". In other words they were shoving her into a box in the middle of nowhere with other freaks like her so that normal people could sleep better at night.
"Stupid snitch! She didn't have to call them."
The owner or, as Kat liked to call her, Mama Leech severely over reacted when her demonic sons had tied Kat to the Christmas tree a few days ago. Technically it was the boys fault that the she accidentally set the Christmas tree ...and the rug....and the couch on fire. In her defense there was no way she could have know that her powers would activate at that very moment much less know that she could turn water into steam when she was pissed off. The fact that the vapor caused the outlet on the wall to explode along with half the lights on the tree and shish-ka-bob it was totally not her fault.
" I mean...I did put it out. Not my fault that freaked them even more that actually setting things on fire in the first place. Everyone's a critic. "
This time she was referring to the second half of her powers, turning water into ice. Again in her defense she couldn't have possibly known about this either. You would think that turning a burning inferno into an icy museum of abstract art would thrill a person, but no it would only make them panic and call area 51 on your lil ass. On the bright side the subtle switch between setting a house on fire with steam and then freezing it made the boys back off on teasing her. Who would have thought that's all lit took to make them go from torturing her to flat out ignoring her existence. She knew they called her things like freak, Ice Queen and monster behind her back but she didn't really care about their failed attempts and making creative insults. These new powers gave her the opportunity to bully them back in revenge for all those years of pranks. Sometimes she would freeze the bathroom door lock so whoever was in it got trapped or worse locked out and forced to go in the woods. Activating this inner power made her turn a little hostile with it, teasing them as often as she could and turning her into a bit of a brat. But, she couldn't do anything big or complicated without feeling like she had a fever or as if she hadn't drank water in days. She didn't really understand how her powers worked or how she could even do what she did but she didn't question it. The scent of some cheep and overly sweet fruity perfume hit her nose like a freight train; bringing her back to reality.
"Gross...Why does he always have to spray such a nasty scent on these? Wonder what my dear old butler Joseph sent mama Leech this time. It's probably another set of pearl necklaces."
She shivered at the thought of that woman turning into a clam shaped treasure chest. She had been referring to the white envelope, which was clearly not addressed to her. It had been sent to M.L. by Joseph, the butler who brought Kat to this forsaken place over a decade ago. He took every chance he got to steal something from Katherine's mothers house and send it to his leach lover as a gift. Mostly it was scattered jewelry that hadn't been used in a long time or mysteriously disappeared after one of her mothers drunk episodes at the end of a party event. Most were older woman type jewelry like pearl and things that didn't particularly sparkly the way she liked.
. I swear if she gets any more of those she will turn into a human sized clam. Which now that i think about it would be ironic since sh-.."
She stopped mid sentence when she actually saw the contents of the gift. A long and thin black chain necklace was wrapped in a small circle around a silver locket. The outside was a soft silver white with an abstract design on it in the lightest blue, it almost looked like clouds. She gently pushed the little stub on the side and smiled as it opened. The inside had a charm carved on the material in the shape of a snowflake. The snowflake had tiny diamonds and sapphires in intricate combinations throughout the spaces in the design giving it a glittering almost 3D effect.
My oh my. Joseph my good man you have outdone yourself at last. This lil beauty is something i would like to get as a gift, let alone your lover. Hmm...Seeing as it is my mothers I think i will be taking back my family property. Heh, thanks for the early Birthday present."
She admired the stunning blues and whites that seemed to explode out of it from the suns light shining on the gems. It was beautiful. Somehow, during her daze of sparkles, she missed the fact that a huge black SUV with windows so dark she couldn't see inside it had parked in the drive way.
"Ok...How long has that been there?"
She said it softly to herself more shocked than anything then instantly jumped with a gasp as a deep voice spoke beside her. Her hands turned ice cold as a defensive reflex, she clenched them into fists when she noticed she could possible loose it again. She looked up and saw an impossibly tall man in a black suit staring down at her, or specifically her hands, with an almost comically stereotypical deep voice.
"Katherine Silverleaf, you have ten minutes to finish packing your belongings and get inside the vehicle. After that deadline has passed you will be considered an trespasser on this property and we will use any means necessary to remove you from the premises. Do you understand child?"
" Hahaha. You have got to be kidding me! With that voice and get up you could audition for the next great mafia trilogy. You would so get the par-...."
Her instant reaction was to laugh in his face. The pressed black suit, small handgun, two gold rings, dark SUV and deep voice were classic gangster movie style. She took out the boots from the bag and put them on before standing up, shoving still chuckling and sighing in disbelief and amusement. She stared at the man for about ten seconds before she started laughing. His slightly hostile sarcasm, subtle threat and the term child made her feel very annoyed like a kid getting told what to do by a parent. Her temper had spiked and made the air around them got hotter than it should be with the morning sun. Her eyes shifted from grey to a yellow hue, she was starting to loose control a little. The man seemed to notice the subtle change and made a small gesture towards the car with military grade precision. Seconds later three men that could have been his brothers jumped out of the car and formed a circle around her; all three aiming a handgun at her. Once she laced the boots up she stood and threw the bag over her shoulder as casually and slowly as possible.
" That's cheating you know. Ugh whatever old man. You can tell the puppets to chill. "
She shrugged it off, taking a deep breath until her hands felt like the temperature they should be and her eyes returned to the clear grey they were before. She looked back at the house while she waited for the guns to go away. The sight of the eight boys making mocking faces at her through the windows or quickly ducking away to hide from her view and Mama Leech standing on the porch counting the hundred dollar bills from the most recent paycheck her mother sent made her decision final. She looked at the man one more time, trying to look as harmless as possible and forced a smile. He finally nodded and signaled for them to escort her to the SUV.
"Get in the car and don't waste any more of my time than you already have. Its a long drive and I like my silence so buckle up and shut up. If you can do that much we wont have a problem. Will we?"
"You don't have to tell me twice old man. I will behave on one condition...I call shot gun!"
Suddenly with a whoosh and a flurry of feathers both men dragging him where tossed across the lawn, one toppling in the grass the other cascading onto a neatly trimmed bush. The rush of wind caused michael to drift through the air a few feet but he landed, if slightly awkwardly on both feet. His wings hung out from his back, slightly relaxed their awesome great white feathers dragged along the grass easily as he walked calmly to his family, straightening his now torn jacket. His wings had busted right through the back and bits of fabric gently fluttered to the ground. "You said....that I could say goodbye to them....at least."
The men got up, training their guns on him with severely unhappy glares but a jerk of a gun barrel signaled they where willing to wait if he made quick about it. Michael's peircing yellow eyes softened as he walked over to his family, standing on the porch. His older sister, Celena, glared back at him, worry and concern apparent by the line that creased her brow. Her arms where crossed and her silence made it apparent how unhappy and worried she was about it all. Michael beamed at her. "I'll be fine, sis. I can take care of myself."
"You can't even do your hair right without my help, Mikey." She pursed her lips and fussed with his hair. She shook her head. "I don't like this little bro. If anything looks more fucked up than this. You fly the hell out of there. Don't look back."
Michael nodded and hugged her. He turned to his mother, whose eyes where red. She too held the anger and sorrow of his sister. Such strong women. She shook her head repeatedly. "I should never have let you go to that school. This is my fault...."
"Mom....no it's not your fault....Look....It's probably not even going to be that bad....at least....no worse than private school....right?"
Michael stirred, immediately feeling queasy again. He fussed with the window anxiously as his brow beaded with sweat and his heart raced. "We gotta pull over again guys I can't do this."
The man sitting next to him groaned. "Just hang on, will ya? We're almost there!"
"Why couldn't I just fly there then? Why does it have to be this tiny..... little.........Nnngh.." Michael retched and the SUV screeched to a halt as the men rushed to get Michael out of the vehicle. A few minutes of spewing chunks and a heated argument later and Michael was brushing his teeth on the side of the road with lukewarm water from a water bottle. Upon looking up he laid his first eyes on their destination. There was nothing but dry hot desert all around them save for the road they where on and a building surrounded by a barbed wire fence. Michael squinted at it. "You're not seriously telling me that....is the school....right?"
"Get back in the car." Was their only reply.
Ty quickly threw on his clothes, packed up a small backpack with clothes, and things he would need, and he took a pack of cigarettes out of his jacket pocket. He took one cigarette out and placed it in his mouth. He touched the tip of it and all that was needed to light it. Ty tossed his jacket over his shoulder and opened his bedroom door. On the other side his mother was about ready to knock on his door.
"Oh! Good you're up!" She said in a cheery tone. Ty glared at her and brushed past her without a word and went straight into the kitchen. "Ty I know you're mad. I understand you don't want to go, but I think you need this." She said as she followed right behind him. Ty ate a poptart and continued to ignore her. His mom started to say something before the door bell interrupted them.
Ty answered the door, and on the other side was two men in black suits. "Tyson Jackson. We're here to take you to the Academy." One of the men said in a monotone voice. "You have an hour to say you're good-" "Yeah, yeah, G-Men I'm ready." Ty interrupted as looked the men up and down. "I'm so glad I didn't wear my black suit. That would've been awkward." Ty chucked. "Let's roll Blues Brothers." Ty said as he pushed them aside, and walked towards the SUV. Ty tossed his cigarette on the ground and stomped it out.
The men got in the front of the SUV, and Ty hopped into the backseat and stretched himself out. Before the SUV drove off, Ty's mom stepped up to his window. "Goodbye Ty. I know it's been hard with your father, and your..........condition." She said trying to get him to say something to her. Ty just looked forward and completely ignored her. "You guys waiting for your prom dates or what?" Ty asked the men. The men looked at each other and then drove off.
As they drove past the large city Ty grew up in, he couldn't help but think of when he first discovered his powers. It was roughly a year and a half ago, and he was in detention, as per usual. That time he was in for pouring sugar in the principle's car gas tank. He was in detention and was trying to throw crumpled up pieces of paper into the sleeping teacher's mouth. When he was about to throw the tenth paper ball, it just went up into flames.
After a drive that lasted for what seemed like forever, they finally made it to the Academy. Ty hopped out of the SUV with cigarette in his mouth. "Well that was a fun road trip." Ty said as he blew a big puff of smoke into one of the men's faces. "Damn, this place is like juvie on steroids." Ty muttered to himself.
βHow can I possible get up with these chains on?β she hissed at her step mom. Her step mom came in and unlocked the chains threw her two suit cases on the bed, they were already packed, the only thing she hadnβt packed was her dog. Grabbing the dogs bed, she put the collar on her Pitbull mix, Panther, and folded up his cage, taking that to the car first, putting the dog in the back seat, she dropped the dogs bag onto the floor of the van, then went back inside, grabbed her suit cases and hopped in the van. βArenβt you glad Iβm going awayβ Judy sneered as she smoothed out her dress, pulled out her make up bag, and applied her pink eye liner, mascara, and lipstick. βI hope Iβm not roomed with a gothβ she muttered as her step mother began driving.
βI hope they never send you backβ her step mother hissed. βI only took you in because your mother is still alive, and in rehabβ her step mother sneered at Judy in the rearview mirrior. βHad you been goth, I wouldnβt have to see your sickening smile. Now please shut up for the rest of the rideβ she said in an impatient tone.
Judy bit her tongue and giggled as her dog said something to her about the step mother. βI hope she enjoys the present I left under her sheetsβ Judy threw her arms around the dogs neck and kissed his nose and ear, glancing up to see the disgusted look on her step mothers face. Judy returned it with a genuine smile.
As they drove in silence, Panther, her dog, was looking at every tree with excitement. βI know, this is your first car ride since the day we took you to the vetβ she said to the dog.
βI canβt believe that thing can understand you, you are a freakβ her step mom sneered.
βBetter to be a freak than a witchβ she said with a grin, and smiled as they got closer to the school, once they reached it, Judy took out her bags, Panther followed by her side, carrying her own leash, the rest of the stuff Judy could carry by herself, just barely. βWell Panther, weβre here.β she said as her step mother drove off, purposely getting dirt on Judyβs dress. Judy rolled her eyes and let her dog do his business and waited on the steps of the school.
Marshall woke as the car was pulling up to the school. It was a prison. Razor wire, cement walls, guard towers and everything.
βWell, I went to a public school, should be about the same.βHe muttered.
The car came to a stop and he got out and pulled his suitcase out with him. He entered the building and the two men went away to do whatever it was they did with their time. He walked up to the check-in desk.
βExcuse me.β he said to the unpleasant looking lady behind the bulletproof glass. She looked up. βHi, Iβm Marshall Stevens.β
βAh, yes Mr. Stevens.β She said as she rummaged through a stack of paper work on her desk looking for his file. βItβs good to see you.β She said as she finally found it. He hoped that she was just making conversation and not making a really bad joke. βYouβll be in room 119A with Jurou Kawaguchi.β
βA roommate?β he thought while the lady rattled off a bunch of rules about times and staff only areas. βI donβt remember them saying anything about roommates.β
βWill there be anything else?β the lady asked breaking his tiny freak out moment
βAh, yeah, I was told there was a pool, whatβre the rules on that?β He asked.
βYes, the pool is open and a lifeguard is on duty from 6A.M. to 8 P.M. Students are allowed to use the pool anytime within that period provided they donβt have any classes, thereβs no PE classes being taught in the pool and they follow all the posted rules in the pool area.β
βCool, so is it open today or do we have to wait till later?β
βYes the pool is open today.β
βAwesome, thanks.β
He walked down the long hallway till he got to the former cell block that was now a dormitory.
βWell at least Iβll be able to go swimming in my free time if I canβt make any friends.β he thought to himself as he wandered down the hall until he found the room he was assigned. He opened the door and saw his new roommate unpacking his stuff and placing it into one of the two small dressers.
βEh, hi. Iβm Marshal your new roommate. You must be Jurou.β The guy turned around and stood up straight. He was only a couple inches taller, but he could tell by his eyes that he was a little bit older than him. He was mesmerized by his red-ish copper eyes. He had never seen anyone with eyes like that before. He shook his head clear for a second and turned so as not to be entranced again. βDonβt worry, you wonβt even know Iβm here; no one ever does.β He said with a slight hint of melodramatic sadness at the last part. He threw his suitcase on the available bed and started unpacking his own stuff into the empty dresser. He grabbed his black swim trunks and a matching towel went into the bathroom and changed. Swimming was Marshallβs favorite way to clear his mind, it always made him feel free being in the water with nothing and no one to make him feel bad about himself. He knew it was going to be the best part about this school. He came out with the towel around his neck in his trunks. βSo, Iβm gonna go hit the pool, if you wanna go."
Desire gently glided her right index finger over the slitted pupil of the snake-eye marking on her left hand, then repeated the motion with her left index on her right. She could feel the warmth in her eyes as they shifted from pink to glowing red with the use of her powers and her own pupils turning to slits like the ones on her hands. A sliver of crimson blood slid out of the area that Dess had run her fingers over and she encouraged the flow and willed it into the shape of a pair of scissors, sharp as the sharpest blade. She took the tool in her hand and opened and closed them to test it before setting her eyes on the flowers before her.
The roses were in desperate need of deadheading and Desire was more than happy to comply. She hummed a soft tune as she carefully snipped off the dead flowers from the bush one at a time. When all of them had been taken care of, Desire sat back and admired her work with a smile. Her garden was doing exceptionally well this year, however she couldnβt help but worry about how it would get along without her when she left for the academy. Sure her mother had promised to take care of it, but Desire was still uneasy about leaving it behind.
The sound of the screen door opening and closing behind her took Desireβs thoughts away from her garden and she turned to see her mother walking out into the yard, wringing her hands and looking a bit anxious. Dess willed the blood scissors into liquid form once more and back through the slitted pupils of her tattoos. Her mother held out her hand to her and helped Desire off of the ground.
βThe people are here to take you to the academy.β Mrs Lavali said, βtheyβre giving you a few minutes to get your things together and say your goodbyes.β
Desire nodded solemnly and dusted the dirt off of her skirt before turning towards the door and walking back into her home where she was greeted with the smell of freshly baked cookies and the odor of a strong foreign cologne that she guessed came from one or both of the men hovering around the doorway. She met the eyes of one and a cold chill ran down her spine that caused her to quickly look away. Desire busied herself with fussing over her bags, which she had packed earlier in the week, until her mother scurried in with her infant brother, Simon, cradled in her arms.
"Iβll see you soon, okay?"Dess promised, hugging her mother before leaning down and kissing Simon on the forehead. "Iβll write when I can. Stay safe, mom."
Her mother nodded with a sad smile and said her goodbyes and then Desire turned to the men and left with them.
The ride was long and silent and Desire jumped when one of the men broke the silence and finally spoke up, βWeβre here.β
She had been lounging with her back against the door of the SUV during the ride, but at the mention of their destination, she straightened and turned to peer out the window. She paled at the sight. "Youβve got to be kidding me. Thatβs not a school, thatβs a prison!" Desire protested, but her words fell on deaf ears and the van turned into the drive and stopped at the entrance.
βGet out.β
Desire startled at the harshness in the manβs tone but was quick to oblige, even the prison would be preferable to the hours of unbreakable silence that she had just endured on the drive from her home in Florida. She went to the back of the car and pulled her things from the trunk and dragged them through the dust towards the building feeling somewhat like a lost puppy with no idea of what she was supposed to do or where she was supposed to go.
"Oh goody... What have we here?"
Mihael would keep his smirk as he rubbed his wrists where the cuffs had once been. "Whatever you say, fuzz. It wasn't your call. You heard the jury." But he was right. For what these two had done, they really should be spending some time behind bars. Mihael watched as the officer undid his brother's cuffs and get back to his car. He seemed rather quick about it, too, like he was in a hurry to get away from those two boys. Mihael's hair flipped a bit as he turned around and picked up his suitcase and bag, making his way in the doors. "I'll see you when I see you, brother. We have different rooms." But before he left his brother, he'd give him a light punch to the shoulder. "Let's raise some hell." He waited for his brother's inevitable retaliation and comment before getting on his way to the dormitories. Settling in would be in his best interest for now.
Making his way through the halls, he eventually found his room. "One-eighteen A." He repeated what was marked on the paper to himself before opening the door. As he opened it, he noticed there was a girl on one of the two beds. Her eyes were closed and her ears were blocked by music. He took a double take to make sure that this was in fact a girl. Then he stepped back to check the room number, which matched up with what he was told was his room. "Co-ed. Dorming." He thought aloud, a large grin coming to his face. "Incredible. If only they gave me a cuter roommate... But I suppose it's a start." He walked in and closed the door, throwing his suitcase and bag next to the free bed, making it a point to do it as loudly as possible to alert his roommate. Keeping that ever-present smirk, the boy sat down on his bed and faced the girl.
When she would look up, she would notice a tall boy with tanned skin and messy white hair. His eyes were golden in color and seemed to shine like the precious metal the color reflected. For clothing, he had on a pair of jeans, faded to look dirty and brownish in color. His belt looked like a dusty orange sash with copper pieces all along it. For a shirt he wore a red long-sleeve shirt that seemed to end midway through his forearms. Above that was an open vest that did not look like it was ever designed to be closed. It looked silky and would certainly feel that way if touched. As far as accessories go, he had on a black string necklace that seemed to have some sort of golden broach as the decorative piece, and one silver ring with an insignia on it. "Well... What have we here? I'm to be bunking with a lovely lady, hm?" No time wasted. If there was one thing in this world that Mihael loved, it was girls. "I do hope that we'll get along real nicely. My name is Mihael McManus... Perhaps you've heard of me?" He and his brother were small-time criminals. He would not be surprised either way if she had or hadn't heard of him before. "Could I get the pleasure of such a lovely young lady's name?"
She remembered the day before the incident-- Rayne jumped and opened her eyes, ripping off her headphones in the process, as a loud thump woke her from her trance. A clap of thunder boomed as she jumped, she silently cursed herself for causing the loud noise.
There was a boy in her room. She scanned him with her blue eyes, she scooted to the edge of the bed, and pulled at the edge of her skirt nervously. He was trying to flatter her, but she wasn't fooled by his words, "I'm Rayne." She replied, "And, no I have never heard of you. Should I have?"
Sure, he was attractive, but she couldn't let some boy get in her way of mastering her powers. She was tired of her emotions getting the better of her powers. It had caused a lot of problems in her past, and even the present. She lifted a hand to move a stray strand of hair behind her ear, having an annoyed look on her face.
"How... No, interesting is an inappropriate choice of words..."
"No, I suppose not. I'm here looking for a new beginning anyway." He spoke casually, making the lie sound honest. "I guess you could say I was somewhat known a bit ago... But that's not important. What is important is that I am here now, with such a cute girl. And your name, I cannot say I've encountered another woman by that name. How unique." His lips were curled ever so slightly into a smile as he spoke. He lifted one leg up onto the bed and rested his chin upon it as he looked into her eyes. He seemed to be looking through her more than at her, his expression calm. Looking her over, he shrugged inside his head and decided that it could have been worse.
"If we're to be living together, perhaps we should get along and be friends, hm?" He extends his hand and leans forward, leaving his palm up and open for her to place her hand in. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Rayne. I would be elated to hear more about you. What do you do with your time? What music do you like?" His gaze turned a bit more serious with his following question. "And most interestingly... Why are you here? I'm interested to know what you are capable of. Your ability." His voice took on a more serious tone as well as he spoke. The eyes that once seemed to look through her now looked directly at her, stealing away her gaze with his own.
"I don't care if you tell me this is a school, there is no way there are schools that look like this. This is a prison."
Cindy blinked herself out of her sleep state, awaking to the sound of the quiet, purring engine outside. She stretched out her limbs; well, to an extent. She was still in the SUV, as they were still driving to the academy. She looked out the window, to see an endless stretch of desert, with scattered dead bushes and cacti. She could see there was no wind, or footprints, just the never ending desert that surrounded the SUV on both sides.
We were probably near the heart, if this isn't the heart of the desert. But which desert is this? We could be anywhere in the world right now... Well, except maybe Antarctica, despite it having the biggest deserts.
She thought about the area she was in. There were no distinct areas in this desert, other then the fact that the sand is more of a yellow-white, instead of the usual yellow. It wasn't much, but she could cross out multiple areas, for example, the Australian outback or the colder parts in Europe. She pondered quite a few things on this journey, the littlest things. She didn't bother asking, though. She knew that they weren't worth her time. They took a sharp turn to the left, as the SUV skid in the sand. Cindy was slightly startled by it, however she manage to keep quiet.
"You've been surprisingly quiet this trip." One of the men spoke up, knowing that she was awake.
"Well, I don't have much to say to you, to be honest. You took me from my home to be imprisoned in a school for people like me. We deserve every right every other high-schooler has. So why are we going to a school that's away from society? From the world?" She grew annoyed. She didn't want an excuse, she wanted an explanation or an answer.
"Because, if something bad happened, we do not want people suffering because of one mistake." She could hear it in that mans voice. He was making up an excuse. There was no harm in me, or anyone else with powers.
"What am I going to do? Bring a Barbie doll to life?"
"I'm sorry! I can't help you, just please... Try to understand." The man said with despair, as the other man glared at him with an evil eye.
Cindy stopped asking questions. There was no point anymore, she wasn't going to get any straight answers. She knew that both of them knew what was going on, and even felt guilty about it. But for what reason? She shuddered, thinking of the possibilities. The worst part is, that the government is probably behind all of this. She looked out the front window, seeing a tiny black speck in the distance. She sighed; it was probably the school. Not a very good sign if it's that dark. The car got closer to the speck, revealing a prison-like building, with a fence perimeter. It was dark, and gloomy.
"You've got to be kidding me. This is the school? I knew it was going to be a prison, but I didn't think it would literally be a prison." She mumbled to herself in disgust.
The gates creaked, as they opened to the black SUV. The car had stopped, as the men got out of the SUV. Cindy was the last to get out of the air conditioned SUV. It was extremely hot, Well over 40 degrees (about 120 Farenheit) which got her sweating in a matter of minutes.
"I'm home," She mumbled to herself. She could see a few people were here, but they were too busy carrying their bags inside. She decided to do the same.
She handed him the Cd's, "Music is my life, if you couldn't tell, there is nothing better than losing yourself in a good tune. That's how I spend my time, plus helping my mother with household chores, my step-dad doesn't like a unclean house." She said.
Why was she here? Well, it was simple. Everyone was here because they had gifts, but she got the just of what he was saying, "I can control the weather and the elements within the weather," she replied, "Electricity and water are the only elements i can manipulate, but I can make any kind of weather, to my knowledge, I've never tried anything drastic like a tornado, or tsunami." She sat again on the edge of her bed, making effort to seem interested with the edge of her shirt, before resting her eyes back on him.
"Disappointing."
Reaching into his bag, he pulls out an analog alarm clock. The numbers were in Roman Numerals and the whole thing looked like a miniature grandfather clock with an alarm up top. It even had the ticking pendulum and everything. He rests it beside his bed on the nightstand and begins fiddling with it in silence for a few moments. He finally finished after a couple minutes with a content sigh before returning his gaze to his roommate. "Sometime I'd love for you to show me your... gift, in action. I have an interest in these abilities. Especially ones belonging to pretty girls." He grins, standing up and moving over to the door. "For now, I think I am going to go find some food. But you do have a lovely day, Rayne. I will talk to you later tonight when I return."
As he left the room, he walked back over to the entrance. He wanted to ensure that he had the way memorized, and so he did. As he walked on by, his gaze happened to turn to the doors. Outside he happened to find another girl. One that, in his eyes, actually was something to look at. She looked upset and uncomfortable about there in the sand and dust. A smile spread across his lips as he exited the building and made his way towards the girl. He hesitated none to approach her and begin speaking. "Well, hello there. You seem to be a bit lost. New here, maybe? I remember when I first showed up... Lost, scared, confused. I had no idea how to get around this place or even what I was supposed to do." He played it off as if he were a veteran here and not another newbie. His eyes of gold locked onto her snake-like eyes that seemed to interest him. They were different, peculiar. Just her image alone grabbed his curiosity. "My name is Mihael McManus. And I would be honored if you would join me for some lunch. Afterwards I will show you around, help you figure out where things are... What do you say?"
"I hate these dorms."
Cindy walked through the doors to the check in. The room, while cool, was eerily dark, dimly lighted, with little to no natural light. The air was dusty, and not the good smelling kind of dust that is on old, vintage books. She was shocked that the state of this room is so horrible. She coughed lightly, going over to the counter, where a woman was sitting. She seemed slightly unpleasant, as if she didn't want to be here. I guess that makes two of us.
"Hello. My name is Cindy Mayes."
"Oh, yeah. Let me sign you in." She typed a few keys on the keyboard, looking up at the monitor. She clicked a few options, and looked back at Cindy.
"There. Welcome to the Academy. Here's your key, and your number is A113"
The receptionist grinned a yellow-toothed smile, and continued typing on the computer. Cindy, clenching onto the key, put it in her pocket, and decided that instead of going in her room immediately, she would instead meet some new people. She knew that she would be here a long time, so it would be much better to make friends instead of stay alone in this place. She opened the doors back out to the heat. She found it much better then the inside's cramped rooms, and dusty air. She took off her cardigan, revealing a white babydoll shirt. She placed her cardigan on the sand to stop her bottom from getting burnt, as she watched as the cars came rolling by one by one. Some people came in SUVs, she heard that a few others before her came in police cars! She didn't care too much how they came, they knew that they all had the same fate. Being kept here until they can use their powers properly. She sighed. In my case, I'll be here forever. She thought to herself. She knew that her skills with her powers weren't very good, so she needs to work harder on controlling it. She decided to go over to a few of the people in the cars. She walked over to a particular person with blond hair, and still wearing a jacket in this weather. She had no real reason to do so, but she did it anyway.
"Um, Hi! I'm Cindy. Nice to meet you. Sorry if I'm being too... Well, perky. I guess I needed friends while I'm in hell." She smiled, as she looked at him.
Desire noticed a few other people around her, exiting their cars and entering the building and she supposed that entering the building would probably be a smart thing to do, perhaps there would be someone inside who could tell her where her room was and what the schedule was to be like. With her mind set on her next course of action, Dess grabbed her bags and nearly ran straight into the boy walking towards her.
He seemed not to have noticed their near-collision and took no time with starting up a conversation. Desire's eyebrows twitched in annoyance as she tried to look over his shoulder towards her destination. "Well, hello there. You seem to be a bit lost. New here, maybe? I remember when I first showed up... Lost, scared, confused. I had no idea how to get around this place or even what I was supposed to do." Desire quirked an eyebrow suspiciously at his words, but kept her mouth closed, waiting to see what he was getting at with such an introduction. "My name is Mihael McManus. And I would be honored if you would join me for some lunch. Afterwards I will show you around, help you figure out where things are... What do you say?"
Mikhael, as he introduced himself, locked eyes with her in a way that felt to Desire almost like a challenge. Despite the minor annoyance that she held against him for the superior tone in his voice and the way he blocked her path, she couldn't help but respect the way he didn't turn his eyes away like most when he saw her oddly colored eyes. Although Mihael's own eyes weren't exactly average either, they looked like molten gold and contrasted against his dark skin almost as much as his messy white hair did.
Desire thought over her options and finally decided that it would be easier on her if she just went with the man, he seemed to know what he was doing and he could probably answer some of the questions that she had. The white haired girl shrugged, "I suppose there'd be no harm in lunch. Lead the way."
Pulling out her bag and changing her shirt, not in the greatest condition after a long journey and an unplanned nap, she wondered what time it was and how long she was asleep for. When she came the corridors were pretty empty but now she swore she could hear voices outside. She smiled, thankful for the presence of other people breaking the proviously quiet atmsphere.
Not even bothering to fix her messy hair Maya made her way to the door. Her stomach growled remind her of how much time passed since she last ate. She wasnβt sure what time it was but if she was lucky maybe she could get something to eat. She walked out and then it dawned upon her remembering the way would be a bit of a challenge. Surely the building wasnβt that complicated but orientation wasnβt her strongest point.
In the end the girl only missed a turn twice and soon found herself back at the entrance of the school from which finding what she needed wouldn't be hard. Not knowing where exactly one could find food she decided to wander around the building a little more. Then as she spotted people the feeling of hunger completely disappeared and was replaced with excitement. Things were quite lively and it made her really happy. The people all looked really cool, she wanted to talk to them as soon as possible and hopefully get to know them better. After all they were all here for the same reason.
Michael was lead through the front doors of the "School" with two of the three men that had brought him there carrying his ample suitcases. He let out a breath, softly as he looked around the entrance with great displeasure. Bland. The whole place was bland, hardly any decor and with little to show that people would be living there and learning. Michael did see a few others a dark haired girl was lead back to the rooms. Michael smiled warmly in her direction in hopes of at least establishing an aquaintance.
Restlessness took grip over Michael as the woman behind the desk went on about rules that Michael was sure not to follow. His honey gold eyes roamed anywhere but at her hoping to get a grasp on what the other students where to be like. His only experience at a school with others was at highschool. He assumed it would be similar the only major difference being they'd be dorm mates as well. Michael blushed slightly at the thought. Everyone knew the shenanigans that teens and young adults got into when not under strict supervision. He was reminded though of the reason they where all there as he brushed a small white downy feather from his sleeve. They all had powers there. His curiosity increased as he thought of the possibility of meeting others with very different and maybe even similar abilities as his own.
"Did you hear me, young man? Your room is 115A"
Michael blinked and nodded, then he leaned his elbow on the desk. "Am I going to have roomates? I don't do well with people who snore or have bad body odor. So.....if someone comes in and you think they might maybe have one of those..."
"The bedding arrangements are permanent, Mr. Haddock." The woman said, quite unimpressed.
Michael exhaled. "Right.....ooook. To Room 115A"
The two men looked at each other and put Michael's bags on the floor. "We've got other students to pick up."
With that they turned and walked back out the doors, one of them chuckling audibly and shaking his head.
"Great. Sure. Thanks....I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!" Michael called after them. He huffed, again and took up his backpack, putting it over his shoulders before gathering the two heavy suitcases in both slender arms. He grunted and trembled before heading down the hall muttering about the ridiculousness of it all.
It seemed the rooms where arranged like in a hotel with all the 100 rooms on the first floor of the dorm wing . Michael passed all the rooms that came before 115, struggling with his heavy bags as he went. "This better be good. So far this place seems little more than a glorified....prison..."
Michael stood before his room. He looked either way down the hall at the others just getting situated.
"Lovely. Hopefully this one should prove more interesting..."
As they walked he snook another glance at her before speaking again. "You know, I don't believe you gave me your name. I must not have asked. How horribly rude of me." He actually did not care much that he forgot. "Could you possibly give me the honor? I'm almost literally dying to know." He tried to keep his smile friendly and his gaze the same. He would get around to asking the important questions over lunch. For now, he would just make small talk, try to make her feel comfortable with him. Her eyes gave him the impression that she was something unique amongst these uniques, something to look out for. Of course, he highly doubted she was on the level he and his brother were. No, that was nigh impossible. But still, that feeling was there. If there were others like her here, perhaps this "punishment" he was forced to endure by being in this "school" would not be so bad.
They would make their way to the cafeteria area where food was just beginning to get served. Like school and prison food seemed to, this barely looked edible. Barely looked like food at all. But it still looked more appetizing than what he was forced to eat while he and his brother were in custody. Once they got their food, if it could be called that, he sat down at a table a bit of a way's off from the other students who were beginning to file in. "I'd absolutely love to pick that mind of yours, if you would be so kind to indulge me. You interest me, with those eyes of yours. Of course, I understand if you're not willing to talk. Seems to be the case with a lot of people here." He spoke matter-of-factly, as if he had actually spoken with enough people to make that assumption. His tone, gaze, and smile all seemed more calm and content than they had the entire time at this point, though.
Desire sighed and kept pace beside Mihael as he lead her to the cafeteria, her eyes staring straight ahead and her fingers fiddling with the handles of her suitcases as she dragged them along beside her. While somewhat flattered by the way he was talking to her, Desire was quickly finding herself tiring of Mihael's never ending stream of compliments. But, not knowing what to say to shut him up and not wanting to be rude, she allowed him to continue and just stayed silent during their walk to the cafeteria.
"You know, I don't believe you gave me your name. I must not have asked. How horribly rude of me. Could you possibly give me the honor? I'm almost literally dying to know."
She raised an eyebrow at the last part, "Almost literally? Now we can't have that, can we?" Desire assented sarcastically, looking up at Mihael. With another sigh she gave in to his request. "My name is Desire Lavali, though most people just call me Dess."
The hallway that the two were walking through opened up into a large, nearly empty cafeteria and Desire followed Mihael to the area where the food was served. She wrinkled her nose at the smell and was quite taken aback by the food itself when she saw it. Being homeschooled for her entire life, Desire didn't even have the experience with school food to prepare her for such slop as they were passing off for food. She was about to refuse when a growling in her stomach reminded her that she hadn't eaten since she left home hours ago. Hesitantly, Desire took the tray offered to her and walked with Mihael to a table that he had chosen some ways away from any other students in the place.
She uncapped the bottle of water that had come with the meal and sipped it as Mihael spoke. "I'd absolutely love to pick that mind of yours, if you would be so kind to indulge me. You interest me, with those eyes of yours. Of course, I understand if you're not willing to talk. Seems to be the case with a lot of people here."
Desire put down the water bottle and picked up the fork that she was provided with, but when she looked at the food her appetite vanished and she put it back down before turning her eyes back up at Mihael. "I guess it couldn't hurt. What do you want to know?"
