The Amorian Conflicts

The Amorian Conflicts

Two hundred years of war between Stroen and Amorah have left no obvious victor. Now Stroen has gained an unknown advantage and Amorah seeks it out.

Introduction

The Story Thus Far

For two centuries Amorah and Stroen have been at each others throats, quite literally. Sharing a North to South border the two have natural borders at the Illochen Ranges, but with the discovery of large gem deposits territorial expansion became the prime focus of both countries. This led to extended battles atop the steep mountains until eventually Amorah sought aid from her Western allies, Ierum. Obliging they sent great armies to strike at the Niestatu Desert, to the South of the Illochen Ranges. Though at first the battles were in favour of the duo, Stroen soon counter attacked with armies larger than anyone had seen before. They seemed unending and forever growing.

Though no one knew how they could amass so many men it was widely known that it wasn't by any natural means. Determined to find the secrets of their enemies Ierum and Amorah sent small parties to secure evidence from within enemy borders and bring it back to end the war. That order was handed out sixteen years ago, and one of the groups has finally returned. Their words chill the strongest man to the bone, for Stroen has made magic accessible to those who could never use it before, and the secret lay in the Illochen Ranges.

As mentioned in the interest check for this roleplay the world is very similar to ours in physical make up. That is to say that cows and pigs are quite real, but fantasy creatures also exist, though I've yet to decide which. If anyone wishes to have any input on the lore or backstory PM me. I'm very willing to incorporate it. The entire premise of this roleplay's first arc is create the background for the future arcs, and any extra depth will be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to make up fictional towns and the like for your characters background, those listed on the map are merely the largest, or most renown for reasons. Many likely won't even have an appearance and are there for depth alone.

MAP (Note; It's a large file.)

Character Sheets

The only reason I want to include a character sheet is to have an organized list of certain aspects of characters. The characters personality and history will both be revealed in depth throughout the course of the adventure(I do want a brief copy of character history though), but things like name, age and other unchanging factors I want written down for reference. If you're applying for the mage include the magic parameter, otherwise feel free to delete it. There is only one mage.

Code: Select all

I want some written bits in here too.

This may or may not change as the roleplay progress. I just really want what you have on hand listed so I don't forget and say you're walking around stark naked when you actually aren't.

Just describe your normal uses of magic and how in particular it's used. As example through incantation or specific movements and the like.

The Journey West

Nestled between the foothills of the Illochen Ranges and another small mountain chain, dubbed Bisomors Refuge for legends long forgotten, sits a market town that far outgrew her borders. Kurnak is famed for being one of the youngest, yet largest towns in all of Amorah. Gold mines littered the nearby mountains and carving a path through them meant assured wealth for the town. These mines lead to the funding of great architecture, beautiful cultural masterpieces, and of course the country's second largest mint.

When Stroen most recently assaulted the borders of Amorah it was Kurnak who bore the breast of the strike and they suffered for it. Built as a market town it had little defenses aside from an outside wall no greater than what you'd expect an outpost to have. The raid left many homes burned and buried under rubble; mines were collapsed and people taken to work as slaves. The whole of the town had fallen into a depression and the great masterpieces that freely hung in the streets had all been looted. Stroen hadn't taken the city, just her treasures. Despite all of this, Kurnak still lives, her only reason for survival was perhaps because of the same gold Stroen stole.

Though strictly regulated, mercenaries are not uncommon in Amorah, and with so much money to go around Kurnak is where most of them like to work. Made up of outlaws, disowned children, soldiers who were too old to fight, but still want to, mercenary guilds are far and many. Boasting one of the largest, Bosimors Flight, they were credited with what little of Kurnak they could save. Even with their aid though Kurnak is a ruin of what it once was and now where three story homes and stores were, lay rubble and grey tents to block out the hot sun.

Today though it is a very different town. Royal armor dons the streets in a polished grin. Soldiers with dark red surcoats walk the streets while vendors shout and holler at them to buy goods they have no money for. These men, along with twenty or so wagons rumbled through town, absolutely silent. With the return of Eiden the Explorer, his new found title, Amorah decided to send out a second wave of expeditionary forces to the Illochen Ranges, and chose the market town as the start of the journey. Wagons were loaded with a month of supplies; dried bread and meats, fruits, clothing, blankets, cooking pots and any other luxury a travelling man may wish to have. Hauling them were two Bastias Rams known for their tameness and resilience among mountains. Even with the bulk of supplies on the wagons these beasts would find it little trouble. Each wagon was then given eight people, in most cases a mix of military and hired help.

How exactly these near two hundred souls were recruited is something for debate. Most soldiers were new recruits, or captains glory grabbing. It was easy to tell whom was hired; the bedraggled clothing on many of them led most of the soldiers to believe they were little more than outlaws or refugees from the Stroenian assault without homes to return too. Others still regarded them as poor beggars bought to camouflage the wagons as belonging to new miners.

Gander was one of those lucky eight you could say, that found himself in the employment of the country and her throne. Wise to the flow of coin he got a tip from a weaselly friend. Stout and with a messy mustache he'd found his true calling as a fencer along the back alleys of Guld and it was there that he met Gander. Originally trying to pickpocket him when the Weasle found out there was a knife in his belly he talked.

"The kings gonna send those folks from Kurnak to their death. The man's a fool if you ask me. Believes he can find something in those cursed mountains. But I tell ya," he rubbed his grubby little hands together scrubbing out the dirt. "It pays pre-etty good."

Smirking as he remembered the pile of coins that slipped into his pocket from following the weasels advice Gander found the cart he was to be tied down with for the journey. The number of supplies honestly surprised him. Though his trek to Kurnak took less than two weeks he didn't expect an expeditionary force to be equipped as though they were going to build forts and outposts in the mountains. Then again, who would ever complain about too much food?

Standing already near the wagon were four men clad in polished armor. Two had large spears leaning against the crook of their arms as they slouched against the fat wheels. The other two stood across and leaned against their spears, all four of them casting that great image of professionalism among the guardsmen. Before wandering too close Gander stood afar and listened to what they had to say. Far be it from wise to walk in on them discussing something, he'd learned from a crack on the head or two in recent days that it was sometimes best to listen from afar. When they sarcastically told of a fifth man coming in to supervise them, as though they were drunken louts Gander thought it safe to approach.

Far from his expectations of the four of them ganging up on him instead they welcomed him with a hearty wave. "You are fifth man there hunter?" One of them goaded in jest. Nodding to the question Gander joined in on the frivolities awaiting the three others left to join the escapade. looking around he noticed some of the other wagons had departed, but for the most part they were still waiting on the hired help to arrive.

Even through the helmet and layers of padding, the charnel stench was cloying. Noxis took the time to remind herself that this was war, and that a good deal of it was psychosomatic, but the pervasive odor of burnt wood and charred flesh threatened to choke her. It got to the point that placing small aromatic herbs within the grill of her devil's-head helm was seeming like a viable option.

The town was a sty, to say the least. What arable land there had been was little more than scorched and salted dirt. The homes and stores were still in shambles, and those working to wear down at the mess were doing so half-heartedly. A wasted effort, Noxis thought. It would be more cost and time-effective to simply gather what little resources that could be salvaged and build from the ground up further down the pass. But people were stubborn. Stupid. Ignorant.

Noxis turned her thoughts back toward the present. With the arrival of the armored forces, her ticket out of this place and in to better airs had arrived. The armored woman carefully picked her way through the slum-like town, giving beggars and the destitute a wide birth. Judging by the glazed look in many of their eyes, Noxis was positive that they were passing around some sort of hallucinogen. She sneered. Probably Valkith, or Diamond Dust. In any case, it would not do to have the intoxicated addicts mistaking her for an otherworldly creature here to take their souls in their inebriated state.

Noxis was only too glad when the wagons were finally set and ready for embarkation. Although more than a little insulted that the covered wagons had been reserved for essential personnel (for what was she?), Noxis was grateful to be away from the mud-wallowing commoners and out to real work. Though, she thought bitterly upon seeing the occupants of the open carts, swill-spitting man-children were not too far of a step up above the former.

Without preamble, the masked woman hauled herself in to the cart and moved to take a seat in a corner at the back. At least there were no whispers of discontent. These men were content to stare for a few uncomfortable moments before shrugging and thinking no more of Noxis. One man did catch her eye, though. The dodgy looking, lanky fellow in leathers. Who would hire a trapper (hunter maybe?) for a fording expedition? Surely there would be enough food that foraging would not be necessary.

Bael looked to the sky overhead as he wandered the streets of Kurnak. He scanned the clouds, carefully determined the hue of the colour on the horizon and cleared his throat as he brought his gaze back to the streets. Sighing he nodded his head in an almost agreement with the sky's conditions. It was a long held belief from his village that one could determine their day's fate by the conditions of the sky above. A blue sky on the horizon was a good sign, but the massing clouds to the east suggested something was coming, but for the moment, Bael was content with what he saw; the clouds were a ways off and that was something not worht worrying about for the moment.

The streets were a surprise to Bael for the most part as he rounded corner after corner, trying to locate the wagons he'd lost earlier this morning. The town was less in ruins than the initial reports to Guld had suggested. In fact, although it seemed the buildings had for the most part, been knocked down a level or two, there were a few that stood the onslaught of Stroen; held up by wooden scaffolding in places and covered by tents to hide the damage. All in all, while Bael was impressed at the resilience of Kurnak. Bael rounded another corner and saw a ways off the wagons he was supposed to be at. He sighed in relief and began his march over to the small mass remembering his strict orders and directives he was to follow from here on out.

It had been just after word of Kurnak's siege that Bael had made the fatal error that cost him his position as the King's inner guard. Stationed to protect the King after threats on his life, Bael and another guard had allowed an assassin to make an attempt on the King's life. It had happened all so fast, and the other guardsman had lost his life before Bael barely had time to strike the assassin down. But that wasn't before he'd managed to wound the King. It was monumental error on his part; Bael knew it too. Removed from the King's personal guard and shifted to what was commonly called the 'Last Post' among the whole of the King's guard; Bael was embarrassed to be seen in his armor as a Mage's protector, but his honor and pride were stronger than the embarrassment of being an Amorah official in the 'Last Post'.

Bael approached the wagons, strengthening his stride, and adjusting his sword at his side. His armor was shining under the sunlight, reflecting the rays proudly which in turn reflected the pride Bael had for his armor. Bael reached the wagons, but made no obvious attempt at conversation with the other guardsmen nearby. Four of them seemed to be making frivolities with fifth man; tallish in appearance, covered in leather clothing and a demeanor that wasn't necessarily unpleasant to behold, but he certainly looked like a man who had endured some hardships.

Bael moved past them, his position in this group was to escort the mage that was supposedly recruited for this expedition and he supposed he should find them before it began. Bael paused for a moment, realising he hadn't been given any indication as to what to expect when looking for a mage. He studied the small crowd about them, trying to distinguish anyone who might not look like they belonged, he supposed that mages didn't look like 'normal' people; in truth Bael had never laid eyes upon a mage physically, merely heard about them. Bael studied the leather armored man by the other guards again - was he mage-like?

Beal cleared his throat and brushed his hand through his hair as he approached the man in leather conversing with the guards by the wagon. A brief glance to his side Bael noticed another character in the back of a nearby wagon. Their armor was - eccentric to say the least, but Bael had stopped questioning who the King was hiring for this expedition as soon as he found himself with his orders to come here. The person sitting in the back of the wagon looked largely ominous to Bael, but he ignored them as he stopped just before the gruff looking man in leather.

"Are you the mage? My name is Bael Fadyn, I've been sent by the King to aid you". Bael said sternly and appropriately.

Exchanging stories of drunken stupors and blatantly idiotic attempts of courting women Gander found the four men to be, at the least, a good time. He smiled and laughed with them, only pausing when someone else approached the group. He looked her up and down and couldn't place a finger on what gender they happened to be. They could have passed as young boy, or boyish woman to him, but the scars he saw along the arms told him to avoid the topic until someone else asked. The iron mask looked crab like to Gander, great horns as pincers rose up and an open mouth made him think of the tiny crustaceans that scurried across the beaches up North. Had it been painted a bright red he would have let out a chortle at her attire, but again stayed quiet. The others weren't so smart, but Gander caught them with a swift cock of the head, as though pleading with them not to be that foolhardy.

The biggest of the men shrugged and continued on his story about a woman from the plains he tried to woo, only to be chased away by her father. He enthralled everyone with his words and would have undoubtedly made a grand storyteller had fate dealt him a separate hand. Gander was so enthralled by the muse in his voice that a second one startled him and he jumped, a hand going to his chest to catch his heart from jumping out while his feet spun him towards the noise.

Staring blankly for a moment he tried to remember what was said that actually startled him. Before he could though one of the guards spoke up. "Him a mage? Ha! If he's a mage then by my ma's tit I'm a knight!" The same one that had joked before. Gander realized he was likely the jester in the crowd, entertaining for a while, but an annoyance after a fortnight. The others must of thought the same as none of them even so much as smirked. "Naw, he's just a hunter Sir. See the arrows? Was telling us he used to hunt Vaerios." All four nodding in unison. "If y'er lookin for a mage we still got one more person to come, but then there's Ms Mystery on the wagon too."

So she is a she Gander realized and snapped his fingers as though he'd just earned some great prize. Turning up at the woman to see her reaction he wondered if she'd known that he hadn't realized, though above all else, if she was their mage.

Re: The Amorian Conflicts

Hi guys,

I just wanted to let you know I've read your posts! I intend on posting later tonight (australia time) I'm just at work at the moment and on break... Reading from my phone haha... I'll get a post up asap!

Re: The Amorian Conflicts

Sweet u v u I did the thing.

And although the town may not be that bad, Noxis is kind of a prick and sees it as a hellhole.

Re: The Amorian Conflicts

I've made the first post to the roleplay, and so it is officially under way. Hopefully it never has to stop. If you have any questions about the setting of the particular town, feel free to ask, but I'll try and clear some things up right now.

The military presence is comparable to a city guard, just really buffed up. Most of them have a sword at the hip and a spear in hand and a few have horses, which are somewhat rare this far south of Amorah.

Even though Kurnak has been sacked so to say, it isn't as though the ground's still afire, it's been a good couple months and they're starting to rebuild, however, where the wagons have gathered is considered to be the worst of the damage as it lies on the very outskirts of the town.

Re: The Amorian Conflicts

Oh wow hi. I'll have a character up soon! u w u This looks hecka cool.

Re: The Amorian Conflicts

Sorry for the lateness! I'll be posting my character pretty soon, but count me in. It's just a matter of finding a time I can do it since I'm getting pretty busy.

Look forward to RPing this. :)

Re: The Amorian Conflicts

Hooray! I'll make a character sometime today, I already have one in the back of my imagination rearing to go! I'm just a little busy this morning but will have it done soon!
