Description

Image
Full name: Ulfang Von Haren
Alias/Nicknames: Ulfang the Black, King of the Northlands, Lord of the Dreadhalls, Lord of the Bastion
Gender: Male
Species/Race: Dark Human
Age: 78

APPEARANCE
Height: 7'9"
Weight: 290 lbs
Build: Hefty and muscular, with power in his every movement
Eye Color: One yellow, one silvery-white
Hair Color: White-blond
Skin Shade/Color: Deathly pale
Scars/Tattoos/Piercings: His face is marred by years of experimentation with the black arts, the effects of failed experiments and unbroken thralls scouring his skin.

Full desc: Ulfang is a bear of a man. He towers over most he meets, and his figure is muscular and powerful, wonderfully preserved despite his age. He has been the Lord of the Bastion for over sixty years. While he lacks the immortality of the Vampires, he has been able to preserve his health excellently through his study of the black arts. He has a strong jawline and intensely curved eyebrows, as well as deep, piercing eyes that can make a man quiver in his boots. When in public, he wears heavy, ornate black plate armour, the shoulders of which are sculpted into the shape of ravens with oddly glowing green eyes and the fingertips of the gauntlets sharp and forged into blades. His body is covered with scars, his life filled with battle and hardship. He has a low, strong voice, the sound of which is enough to scare the life out of the living.

Personality: Ulfang has a strong, charismatic personality, though he wears an aura of dread as well. Many of his own followers fear him, for one who crosses Ulfang the Black usually does not live to tell of it. This goes for humans and Vampires alike, as he welcomes the Guardians of Night into his home but expects them to follow his house rules as anyone else. Some have said that his personality is almost enough to rival the King of the Darkness, though most would never say it in front of a Vampire.

Equipment and abilities: The source of his power lies within, as he has trained himself to resist the extreme pain brought on by many of the Black Spells he has seen fit to use. He is a powerful user of these arts, though in the average battle he generally uses his long, cursed greatsword named "Fang", resorting to the Black Arts only in desperate situations.

Quick Background: Ulfang Von Haren was born into the Von Haren bloodline by way of Borkath Von Haren and Sartha Von Haren, the former rulers of the Bastion of Night. From a young age, he showed interest in the Black Arts, his corrupt bloodline giving him a natural affinity for its usage. His power in this quickly grew, and despite being the youngest of five, he quickly became favoured among the House. Tradition was tradition, however, and only the first born could rule Castle Von Haren and its holdings. As such, at the age of 16, Ulfang brutally murdered two of his older brothers, the first born fleeing to the side of the light before Ulfang could finish the deed, effectively abandoning his title as prince. Ulfang became the heir to the Von Haren legacy, and as soon as his parents died, he was crowned King of the North, inheriting the massive suit of black armour that was the King's trademark. He rules his holdings with an iron fist, though he is not unkind to those who follow him without question. His various villages always have enough to eat provided they give in return, and his followers are fanatic to the point that they would kill their own mother if given the order. However, this comes at a price. Any who do not show loyalty to Ulfang are summarily executed by his own blade, their souls draining into the corrupt steel and causing his power to grow even further. This is his main method of sustaining himself, and the reason he looks so young despite his age, though this is a secret that only he and the King of Darkness know about. While he holds quite a bit of sovereignty, he still ultimately answers to the leader of the Guardians of the Night, and his loyalty is as unyielding as he is. Any who can consider Ulfang an ally are lucky indeed, and the King of Darkness can count himself among them.

So begins...

Ulfang von Haren sits upon his large obsidian throne within the Bastion, an expression of bliss upon his face as tendrils of green energy drain into his body from the throat of a small man clutched within his right gauntlet, originating from the bladed tips of his fingers and dissipating as they spread into his own flesh. The longer he holds the man, the more vacant the man's eyes look, and the more stark his skin and hair become. A few of his Dread Knights look upon the dark happening, and despite their own dabbling in the Black Arts, they can't help but avert their eyes from the deed. Before long, the man has become nothing but a husk, slack-jawed and vacant-eyed, barely able to stand on his own as von Haren discards him. The King in the North looks considerably less blissful now that the draining is complete.

"Take him to the deep with the rest of the husks." commands Ulfang's booming voice to the nearby Knights, who quickly move to grasp the zombie-like man, who follows without any protest. There was very little to do here, and Ulfang had not seen a real war in years. He sighs a bearish sigh and stands, approaching the fountain that his own family artificially constructed hundreds of years ago, but whose viewing took a terrible price from its user. The images and thoughts in the fountain were fueled by the power of its master's life force, and a normal man would've been drained of any soul years ago. Perhaps, muses Ulfang, he truly had no soul, and was just a more driven husk, like the rest of them. Waving this thought aside, he approaches the structure and lays both mailed hands upon its edge, wonderful pain wracking his body as he gazes into its depths, unearthing secrets which humans were never meant to see. And what he sees is interesting indeed. A new player in this game of power. A corrupt angel, whose killing was more beautiful chaos than he had ever seen. Then, his attention is stolen by another occurrence, this one not a presence able to be seen by one's eyes, only felt by the mind. War is brewing, he senses. A long and deadly war, with many great powers clashing in a wonderful wave of destruction. Another war between the Light and the Dark. Excellent. It was too bad he had missed out on the last one.

The dark human grins as he moves back to his throne, new scars lining his arms beneath his armour, trailing up his arms like bloody tentacles of some ancient horror. He no longer minds the burning feeling, however. The only thing that occupies his mind now is the great conquest to come. His Dread Knights would have a great part in this war, as would his own hand. And that, more than anything else, excites him in a way that he has not felt in decades.

Adrastos was recognized upon stepping onto Ulfang von Haren's property. Though he hadn't returned for a visit in nearly five years, apparently he hadn't been forgotten by the Dread Knights. In order to prevent losing control, he had summoned himself inside the entrance gates, instead of inside the actual castle. "Tell him I'm here." Was all he said to the first Dread that approached him.

Adrastos took his time, waltzing through the castle grounds, touching every statue, as if remembering it.

Upon breaching the throne room, he shadowed the entrance. He saw the old man leaning over the Fountain of Fane replica, noticing at once the abuse that time had put him through. "King von Haren, how long it has been."

Ulfang grins widely as the King of the Night enters his own domain, and he takes a short bow as he stands back up, walking down the rough obsidian steps from atop his throne. "Good evening, Adrastos, my old ally. Indeed, it has been too long." booms the massive man, standing to his full height. He towers over just about everyone in the room, and Adrastos is no exception, although the King of the Northlands knows enough to know that his counterpart is strong in other ways. Ways that the Lord should likely watch out for. There is no handshaking before Ulfang continues, "Why have you decided to visit after such a long period of silence? There must be something important going on." The human's yellow and silver eyes search the Vampire's, as if his gaze might give some indication as to his intentions.

"Mmm, indeed there is." Adrastos stood with his hands behind his back, "Much has changed since we last spoke." He eyed the surrounding Dread Knights, and wondered, "How safe are my words here within your throne room? What I've got to say has to be fully protected from those that would see me fail." Adrastos knew that Ulfgang was capable of things that most humans only had nightmares of. This is why he had grown to trust the man so, and consider him an ally.

"Well, it's fairly secure, but let us take a walk anyway, shall we?" responds Ulfang in a low voice, before walking around the King of the Night and toward the exit, armoured and bladed gauntlets crossed behind his back. He doesn't look back to see if Adrastos follows; he'd be a fool not to. The Throne Room was not, in fact, secure for those who were not of the Von Haren bloodline or its servants, as many of the ancestors' spirits inhabit that place, either damned to stay or pulled from the realm of death by Ulfang himself. They were not so kind when the current Lord of the Dreadhalls was absent, and their hatred can be felt as a more and more crushing presence as Ulfang gets closer and closer to the exit.

Adrastos turned, and followed his host. As Ulfang walked closer to the exit, Adrastos' eyes took on their darker black hue, from their lighter grey. The Dread were fearfully loyal to Von Haren, but did not offer a single ounce of trust for Adrastos, even if Ulfang did. Adrastos could hear their anticipation and nervousness grow within their heartbeats. Before they became tempting, Adrastos crossed the distance to come up directly behind Ulfang. The night air calmed Adrastos. He took in a deep breath through his nose, the night air mixed with the cold stone of his courtyard filled his lungs, and brought back memories.

"I see you've not wasted a single moment of your existence, old friend. Your, Dread, is it? Their a fearsome group indeed. I don't imagine a single human has stepped up to question your kingdom, eh?" He walked slowly, beside Ulfang, with his hands clasped behind his back, and shoes clicking the stone along the ground.

"However fearful your army is, though," Adrastos spoke, "That isn't why I've come to see you after all these years." He turned a head slightly to look at his companion as they walked beneath the moon, "I've been building an army, of sorts, myself. An army of creatures like me, however, it's still young. My strongest one?" He chuckled a bit, "Well she's magnificent. Though, I know it's only a matter of time before her sisters come to intervene. As you well know, we do not have the power to actually kill a Daughter of the Light. However," He paused, and stopped walking to turn and face Ulfang, "We also both know that your territory does not abide by the Laws of the magical Realms. I suppose what I'm asking is, how much space do you have available for me to utilize within your dungeons?" He arched his eyebrows, and smiled something fierce at the latter part of this question. Truly, this was an opportunity that Adrastos just knew Ulfang would never pass up.

Ulfang walks at a slow, leisurely pace, grinning at Adrastos liberally now that he has no airs he needs to put on. "Aye. You know me, Adrastos, I never waste a second. You know, you never told me I'd meet so many weak-willed people as a King. I swear, the council of nobles is full of idiots. It makes my job easier, though. None would dare oppose me, even if I don't do what they think I should." says Ulfang, making idle chatter. But he falls quiet and looks to Adrastos curiously when he starts to make his proposition. Then, he grins. Widely and bearishly. Predatorily, even.

"The deepest halls of the Bastion are at your disposal, my friend. They have been empty of screams for too long -- The only things that live there now are my husks." says Ulfang, nodding at his question. The thought of having an Angel within his dungeons fills him with glee. Having an obedient and content kingdom was excellent, but it made things considerably more boring. Now he could change that, and he would do everything in his power to do so. He turns to Adrastos and nods down at him, his eyes alight with anticipation. "When do we start?"

Adrastos couldn't help but smile and glow at the Ulfang's response. "Wonderful! I'm absolutely positive our relatives of Light will enjoy a stay here at Castle Von Haren, or perhaps it's I who will enjoy their stay?" He shook his head, "It's hard to tell." He slapped the human King's back with a friendly hand, careful not to use his full strength so as not to send him flying into a wall. That hesitance in his strength also brought up the other reason he had come, besides reserving a few rooms.

He turned his back on the human, trusting him fully. The two had grown up together in the tower, in a sense. Adrastos was a good twenty years older than Ulfang, but that hadn't stopped Ulfang from taking interest and befriending the vampire when he was a child. "In the beginning, your father kept me beneath ground, and hidden from the eyes of the Angels. Do you remember that?" Of course he knew he did, but wanted to take him back to that time. "I believe he kept a journal of my growing, Ulfang. I'd like to take a look into that." He closed the short distance between them, and whispered, "I'm beginning to lose all focus when in a rage. I vaguely remember doing this as a young fledgling, though at that point it was because my power was growing stronger. I'm not noticing any new strength, but alas, I'm also suffering from memory loss during such incidents, so even if there were, I wouldn't notice." He continued, "This kind of information must be kept quiet, as I'm sure you can see why. However, your father had a certain spell of his that helped me focus through these fits and gain control of my consciencenous. I need to do the same now, and find what it is that's taking on change within me." His eyes would tell exactly how severe and serious the situation was.

Ulfang smirks warmly -- something only the Von Harens seem to be able to do -- and nods. "I am sure I will enjoy their stay, if nothing else." he remarks with a nod. And then, when Adrastos' back turns and his tone changes, so does Ulfang's expression, from one of mirth to one of seriousness. He nods as he thinks back to the memories, grinning slightly, wistfully. And then he lowers his expression back down when Adrastos finishes, nodding more solemnly. "Aye," he responds, looking down at Adrastos seriously, "Aye, I remember. And I think I know where your book is. Everything written by our blood relatives is kept in a special area of our archives." he says, turning about himself. Ulfang rarely turned his back on anyone, but this was urgent and he had no fear of this vampire stabbing him in the back. Perhaps he should, but he doesn't. "Follow me. We shall figure this problem out together."

The old man moves quickly, with a long, loping gait through the halls, leading Adrastos to a heavy steel door in the west wing of the fortress. He pulls a ring of keys from somewhere under his left gauntlet, using a particularly large one to unlock the heavy bolt that keeps the archives from prying eyes. The door swings open and an echo rings out over several hundred feet of space as it slams into the wall with a bang. The archive chamber is dimly lit, massively wide and so tall that one can barely make out the ceiling in the darkness (unless they're a vampire, of course). It's full of tall, well-smithed iron bookcases that stretch to the ceiling, several books well preserved within them. It has been said that every book ever read by mortal eyes and even a few that haven't been rest within these archives. One needed special permission to come in here. It was good to have connections.

"This way." mutters Ulfang as he slams and locks the door back behind him and leads his ally through several narrow hallways of books. They eventually arrive at another, even thicker steel door, and Ulfang uses a different key to unlock this one, grunting a bit as he pushes it open. If it's heavy even for him, it must be incredibly dense. Before them are stone steps leading down to a pitch-dark hallway that stretches before them, branching off into a labyrinth of other hallways. Ulfang starts down the stairs and shuts the door behind them again, the sound booming and echoing down the hallways this time. He beckons to Adrastos as his gauntlet bursts into green flame, lighting the way. He walks down the first hallway and takes a left, then a right at the end of that one, straight at the next intersection, another right, and a left until they arrive within another archive room. It has gotten cooler, meaning they've delved deep into the earth, and though it's barely perceptible, every step was taking them further down, the hallway floors slanted ever so slightly. It was a long walk, but it's almost worth it to see the grand scale of the cavern before them. Even larger than the other library, this one holds every single word ever written by any of the Von Haren bloodline. So old is their bloodline that the shelves are all at least half full. "We're here." he says, turning back to Adrastos. He eyes the vampire. "You know, if you have any other information, now would be the time. No one will ever hear us down here. Or, at least, only one. And we can trust him."

A dark presence can be felt here, a crushing hatred and darkness even worse than in the throne room. The two feel as if they're being curiously observed, as if eyes watch them from every direction. The darkest secrets of the Von Haren family rest down here, and they're guarded by something even darker.

"Hm?" Adrastos had gotten loss in thought along the walk. For a vampire to have pleasant, if not endearing regarding humans, was a rare occurance. The first library that they had came to, held memories of education. As he was kept from the human world, so as to avoid the Heavenly one, those books had been his only source to all things outside the Von Haren walls. The dank humidity within the halls as they declined reminded him of his own Synagogue. He kept a close distance to remain heard, but far enough back to not cause Ulfang to worry.

Adrastos nodded his head in response to Ulfang, "I've recruited an Angel who goes by the name of Zuu. She's a piece of work, one that I'm sure you'd most appreciate." He slid his finger along the lines of sacred books. "She's my key to bringing the Angel's down from their heavenly posts. She has taken to vampirism quite gloriously, thought she needs to continue building her strength in order to over power their Light powers completely. As it is now," He lowered his head and gestured a hand, "We can't actually bring harm to our sisters. However, that's not to say I'm not on the trail of figuring out how." His shoulders went still, "This is it, isn't it?" Pulling from the shelves a leather bound journal.

"An angel, you say? Hah! How'd you manage that one?" asks Ulfang with a slight grin. "I hope she's not too weak of heart for you. Some angels are particularly abhorrent of bloodshed."

Then, his smile fades a bit and becomes slightly more somber as the vampire pulled a dusty leather journal from the shelves. "Indeed." he replies, nodding slowly. "I have never read it myself, though I must admit I have been curious. My father never allowed me to look into his most personal thoughts, and so I've never opened that book. What dark secrets, what black incantations are held within only he knew...and I am sure your progress is well-documented as well, if you say he was keeping that journal for the purpose of recording it. My father was very meticulous, as I'm sure you remember." He looks on with anticipation, barely able to conceal it beneath his flat-lipped stare.

Adrastos became almost hypnotized by the journal, flipping it over in his hands, and running his fingers over it's binding. "Hmm? Oh yes, an angel! She uh, sought me out actually. Something about them not letting her perform to her true ability." Her raised his brow, as if to suggest it not so hard to believe, "She's quite a piece of work, you'd like her, I imagine."

"Quite honorable of you to not invade a person's privacy, even if the document lie within your own property." He noted. "Yes, your father was meticulous, to say the least. He taught me a lot about myself as I was growing, something uncommon among your kind. No offense, of course. He could have almost been considered a father to me, Ulfang. Even though I'm a monster, he showed me a way to live. He gave me a purpose to strive for in this god forsaken immortal life that I've been cursed with." He nodded his head, and tapped the journal with his left hand. Dust flew from it into the air, "Might you have a more," He looked about their surroundings, "Brighter place I can sit to read?" Though he didn't really need light, he imagined he would be going down memory lane, and a dank underground atmosphere might not suit his temperment as might a more comfortable setting.

Ulfang nods with a small smirk. "The King of the Night is concerned with comfort at a time like this? Don't make me start to question my alliance now, old man." he says, but he beckons to Adrastos nonetheless. "Come, come. There's a study just off this section of the archives. Building underground eliminated most of our space issues, and our master architect made sure that it wouldn't cause any instability in the ground above. He was a good architect. It's a shame we had to kill him afterwards. Couldn't have knowledge of this place floating around."

As he speaks, Ulfang leads the way through several rows of shelves, before they arrive at another heavy door, though this one appears to be made of fine Northland Pine, rather than steel. Ulfang opens it with a loud creak, revealing the room before them. They've walked into another large cavern, though this one's walls are cut more precisely and lined with decaying crimson brocade wallpaper. At one end of the room, a comfortable but worn-looking chair and desk combination sits upon the hard-wood oak floor, between the book cases which line the walls, stretching up all the way to the ceiling once again, although this time the ceiling is, in fact, visible to those who are able to see in absolute darkness. Ulfang, however, is not one of those, and as he raises his mailed hand, the green flame that had formed in his palm explodes into dozens of smaller flames, shooting out and igniting several ornate torches that protrude from the walls between the book cases. The room bursts into light at once, and the area is illuminated, though it takes a moment for one's eyes to get used to the sudden brightness.

"Alright, here we are," says Ulfang, "my father's study. A bit dusty, yes, but it functions all the same. Make yourself comfortable."

Adrastos ignored Ulfang's teasing, and followed him. He knew that the man would never truly stand against an alliance forged by his father. The man enjoyed his terror entirely too much to ever shove away a protector of it. Apparently, he had even been taking in rogue vampires. Adrastos had sensed a presence upon setting foot on the grounds, but hadn't paid mind to it until obtaining the journal. The journal contained a magic of it's own, one that was fed into to be stronger as it came into the presence of Dark Lords. Having first picked it up, he had felt a pulse already vibrating with power. Ulfang's guest was not to be underestimated.

Arriving at the study, Adrastos anticipated the moments to come. This study had been his true destination upon retrieving the journal, it was amusing to the King of the Night how magic seemed to find it's own way, no matter the number of beings involved.

Adrastos had knowledge of something that Ulfang didn't. Something that could make or break a human's sanity. Having faith in that Ulfang's sanity had already been tested past it's limits, he spoke, "And this is the place. This is where this," He set the journal down upon the desk, and boldly sat down in the chair, "Comes to life." Opening the book to the middle, it would appear that the several pages had been left blank. "Here it is. The passage that will reveal the method to my madness." He looked up, grinning at Ulfang. "I fear what comes next is a magic far darker than what even roams your halls, my friend. It is bound to take a physical toll on your aging body. Albeit, I expect you would still want to witness?"

The magic encrusted within the book was forged from the original Prince of Darkness. A piece of his own soul had been bound to the book, by Ulfang's father, for Adrastos's benefit. The Prince of Darkness held no compassion within him for any living human soul, after his fall from Guardianship. For Ulfang's father to even had tapped into the magic, had been a disaster, but also successful. It is what allowed Adrastos to overcome his angelic poisoning. It gave him enough strength to focus when it came time for his dark duties. However, he had to mold and use the Prince's magic on his own, Ulfang's father could not withstand the toll that the Prince's magic took on him.

However, Ulfang's father was not Ulfang. Ulfang had fully accepted the Guardian world, and embraced it even. He was aware and capable of his own magic, as his castle would prove. However ancient and pure the Prince's magic was, it was still from the old world. In comparison to the new modern world of today, the old ways are mere shadows.

Ulfang simply watches the man in silence, his gaze inquisitive. He pulled up another chair that rested some distance off and gives his old time ally a grin, nodding slowly. "And I expect that to be a rhetorical question. Release it; let us see what maddening secrets this old relic contains." His gaze has since shifted from the vampire to the journal, his eyes hungry for the arcane knowledge to be gifted to him.

Truly, Ulfang is an oddity among men. His soul is intertwined with countless others whose essence he has stolen, yet he still keeps his identity, which speaks to his iron will. His magic is the most powerful magic that any human caster has wielded in countless generations. Without a doubt in his mind, he is ready for this. More than ready, in fact; he was eager.

Adrastos grinned, and lifted his brow, "Well then, let's begin. Shall we?"

Adrastos read aloud,
"Journal Entry 23,
Adrastos tends to get frustrated when trying to utilize his Darker power. The effect of the Angelic blood within him, assuming he bleeds, seems to counter act his darker urge. This has came to my attention after Adrastos attacked one of my squires for harassing a whore within the castle. The situation that occurred raised question to whether the young immortal could be trusted. Apparently, as the squire grabbed hold of the wench in seek of gratitude, Adrastos bit into the boy's throat, and handed the wench his head.

That however, is not the concern. After all, he's a Dark Lord. The question at hand, is why doesn't he remember doing so? I fear that his lighter alignment from his mother is fighting against his darker urges. If he cannot bear consciousness when acting as a Guardian, the Angels would put him to slumber for sure.

As of now, I keep the boy hidden beneath the ground and protected until it can be dealt with."

The King of the Night's eyes glazed over, taking on the same familiar dark hue as they had when he last spoke to Zuu. "Your father recognized my disability at a very young age, you see. This is why I was kept within the shadows."

Flipping ahead a few pages, he continued,
"The fits have yet to cease. I fear there is no hope for the half breed."

"Perhaps you remember the incident where your father's livestock was slain, causing an uproar within the staff? A time when you would have been kept out of sight for protection, due to the risk your father took to harbor me. Times then were not as they are now. I couldn't be trusted, I couldn't be taught." He flipped through a few pages, "However, then this came to be within your father's possession." He pulled from the book a piece of smeared parchment. "This is it." Adrastos only had to hold the parchment within his hand for the letters to start unscrambling, piecing together, to make what appeared to be a spell.

"This spell mutes the Light within me; the questioning of character that blinds me during my time of, fun." He met Ulfang's eyes. "It was forged by the Prince of Darkness, himself. How your father got hold of it, I'm clueless." He tilted his head forward to perhaps see a hint of familiarity within Ulfang's eyes. His father might have spoken or told his son something of importance upon his death bed, but he also might not have.

"Regardless, I need to re-enforce this spell. I'm quite happy you chose to stay, Ulfang. For, I need your help casting it. The Prince has been asleep entirely too long for this spell to offer forth any more of his darkness that has already been forged to it. With mine, his, and yours, though, it might be possible to cast it this once, and never have to again. To rid myself of this disgusting disease that lives within me." He shook his head, and had to set the spell down upon the table before he crumbled the fragile paper. Through gritted teeth, "Just speaking of it makes me cringe." He opened his eyes again, and pleaded through long lashes, "There's a reward to gain here, having helped me. A permanent increase in your own physical and mental strength. And I believe that to be only the beginning, only what your father said he received. A real man doesn't have to reveal his weaknesses." Even as Adrastos was immortal, the Light within him gave him an opinion of himself even lower than that of a human. This wasn't something he had ever told anyone, or even implied, until this moment. "However, also with this increase of power, comes a heavy thirst for it. Nothing will ever be good enough for, you'll never be satisfied, and will always be left wanting more."

Leaving Ulfang to think for a moment, he then asked, "So what do you say, brother?"

Ulfang listens intently as the King of the Night reads, stony-faced and unmoving. And then, as the vampire puts fourth his request, Ulfang appears to go into a few moments of deep thought. He was stronger than his father had ever been, and his body was full of souls he could sacrifice instead of his own. While he didn't feel he needed an increase in either physical or mental power, it would serve his cause well. He looks back at Adrastos with a grin as he makes up his mind.

"I have very few weaknesses, my friend, but this spell may help to eliminate those few. And, I already feel an uncomfortable need for the consumption of the souls of those who would oppose me. I will do it," he responds with a wide grin. He was never one to pass up an opportunity to increase his magical power, even at great cost to his personal being, as is evident by the scars that mark every failed magical experiment he's conducted. While the ratio of success to failure is high, there have been quite a few experiments over the years

Adrastos nodded. "Good." Was all he said. He needed the help, regardless of if the effect it had on Ulfang was needed or not.

"So, I'll begin. When it begins to consume me in that I'm no longer responsive, that's when you'll finish." Everything between start to finish couldn't possibly be explained so simply.

"Světlo a tma, smíšené v prostřednictvím. Spojí dohromady, následovat hrůzy. Chcete-li potlačit svědomí, pro vlastní účely. Sloužit tvé vlastní, a ne odpovědět na volání světla. Nechť zastiňují světlo tma.
Tmu od světla.
Tmu od světla.
Tmu od světla."

A bright light started to shine out of Adrastos from every limb. The pupils of his eyes disappeared, his eyes dimming from light to dark.

For many minutes to pass, he sat, simply glowing. There couldn't have been any way for Ulfang to understand what was taking place, only that the air had dropped considerably in temperature, and Adrastos was unresponsive. Having agreed to do so, and been informed when, this would be when Ulfang would continue the chant.

Upon touching Adrastos' hands which were positioned atop the parchment, Ulfang would feel the change taking place within the vampire King. Closing his eyes, he would be able to see it.

Two cellular power sources glowed in blackness. He could see energy being pulled from one, and given to the other. During the transaction, the energy being pulled came out as a brilliant, breath taking light.

A tranquil feeling would overcome Ulfang and Adrastos as every bit of Light energy was removed. Watching it evolve into the darker source, the tranquility ceased. Adrastos was immune to all physical feelings of pain, normally. This exercise, however, strained him within his soul. It was as if his very essence was destroying itself, and regrowing.

A burning sensation over took Adrastos' body, which caused him to verbally release the pain. His head shot back, and twisted in such a way that would have broken a humans' neck. His fingers curled in several different directions. What came next would put the essence of time completely in perspective for Ulfang.

The energy that was light, now shadowed itself as it progressed to the opposite cell. As all the energy entered the cell, it looked to seal itself.

From Adrastos' chest, the emptied light cell escaped. It would hover above the two beings' heads within the room, before exploding into the air. The cell itself turned into protective energy, as was the base of it's power. The energy burst out of, and through the top of the study. The entire Von Haren castle and grounds became enveloped in it. The energy would stand as a protective barrier between the castle and the rest of the world. Time would stand still, for all that were of Castle Von Haren, human and vampire alike. Only upon the castle master's permission could anyone not of the Von Haren family or Dread Knight, proceed through. This is what the magic sensed would most benefit Ulfang, as Adrastos said it would.

Having had the light energy taken from him, Adrastos stood physically motionless before Ulfang.

The darker cell grew within him. A cell representing his own essence came into view. Different shades of the grey twisted and rolled to make it's appearance. The darker cell seemed to draw Adrastos essence to it. The cell and essence combined.

All feeling of wonder and awe was gone. This combining of the two onset something so confident in its' power, it left both Adrastos and Ulfang completely astounded. The tranquility returned. The spell was finished.

Adrastos opened his eyes, to stare down at Ulfang. He had never before felt so sure of himself. The heavenly essence was finally gone from within him. His struggle would come to an end. He could now follow through with his plans, without having to question himself regarding the way about it.

Adrastos let out a loud, what could only be described as, growl. "Yes! YES!" He laughed, "Finally! Freedom!" He felt as if he could finally breath, even if he didn't need to. The weight that the Light essence had put upon his conscience was gone. He felt hungry. He wanted to eat, to kill, without hesitation. Not drink blood from a goblet, but to dine upon the blood and souls of the wretched humans that existed within the world; both evil and good alike.

"Tonight, my brother," He spoke to Ulfang, "A true alliance has been made."

Ulfang simply watches the ritual happen with a curious gleam in his eye, speaking only for his part of the incantation. But when the cell of energy burst above the castle, Von Haren's eyes grow wide with alarm. "Exactly what did you just do?" he asks, his brows furrowing a bit at the new development. He hoped, of course, that this new deal would be as beneficial to both parties as the King of the Night made it seem.

"A true alliance indeed. Was it not true before? I am truly curious as to what you will do with your newfound freedom," he says, a tinge of suspicion within his voice.

Adrastos eyed Ulfang carefully, "I just secured your entire castle grounds. Not a single soul can cross it's barrier without either your personal invitation or allegiance to your Dread Knight."

He pushed himself up from the desk, picking up the journal with him. "Oh, it was true before, but now it's unbreakable. The protection spell only last for as long as I live." An evil grin spread across his mouth, "Now our light friends cannot enter your domain, for any reason. Though of course they would have been met with a fierce retaliation had they tried before, but now, to try means to die, in their case."

"To be a bit more specific, you've your own realm, my friend. Not the Light warriors, or anyone can cross into Von Haren country. They wouldn't know how or where to look even. You've gone completely off the map, so to speak."

He crossed the distance between the two of them, and braced a hand on Ulfang's shoulder, "As far as my new found freedom goes, I believe I'll be doing a bit exploring throughout the realms. Just to try on my lack of conscience for size. Perhaps a village ravaging, or sinking a ship or two. Who knows? The possibilities are endless." He chuckled, and patted his brother on the back, embracing him in a shoulder to shoulder hug. "For the first time in a long time, I truly do feel free. And it's brought on an appetite. Did I hear someone mumble something about a feast?" He asked.

"Mm. Magic often has very unintended consequences. I felt a shift in time, my friend. It is concerning. But enough of that for now! Yes, you did hear something about a feast. A banquet in honour of our allies. Your kind will feast on the best of the harvested blood of well-fed prisoners. There is also...ehm...regular food, if you would be interested, but I do so doubt it. Oh, and we also have raw human flesh in reserve." says Ulfang, his gaze still not entirely reassured, but no longer is it so suspicious. He smiles and nods as he turns about and reignites the green flame in his hand, the torches all about them exploding into darkness as the energy returns to his palm. One might wonder how many souls he uses to light this flame.

He leads the two back out of the catacomb-like archives and through the halls, into the main hall, where there is a massive gathering of people and Guardians seated about two long, expertly-crafted Black Oak tables, the naturally diseased wood gleaming oddly, despite having no varnish or finish. Large goblets of crimson red and thick blood sits before vampires, while various meats and breads and wines and meads are placed before the rest. One or two vampires also feast on the human meat, but most keep to the blood. Most of the vampires conduct themselves with dignity, as usual. The Northerners, on the other hand, act with much merriment, violently clanging steel mugs together and generally making a mess and speaking in loud voices. Not surprising for the Northmen, really.

On the far wall there rests a fountain upon a raised dais, an angry-looking dragon spitting a gout of water from its mouth into a basin supported by the wall and two thin dog legs below, the water on a very high-tech and high-class pump system that is truly breaching the impossible by today's standards. Three chandeliers hang from the ceiling, beautiful red crystals casting a lovely crimson glow over the whole affair. To either side, the ceiling is supported by massive pillars sporting rectangular in-facing banners with the Von Haren house insignia: crossed bleeding broadswords upon a field of black and lined with sparkling gold filigree. Stained glass windows depicting awful acts of necromancy and famous battles of the Dreadhall forces line the walls, the gloomy light of the moon barely able to pierce them as it shines through the clouds. As most of the castle's interior, it appears to have been carved entirely from Black Onyx, the entire thing seeming to meld seamlessly, causing an odd, but beautiful sheen of the floors, pillars, and walls. The massive room is a testament to Von Haren power and patience, as this alone may have taken an entire human generation to construct fully.

"And here it is! Beautiful, is it not? Every noble, every vampire, every person of note from the Northlands has joined us here tonight to honour our alliance, my friend," states Ulfang grandly. "Enjoy yourself, of course. And don't forget to sample the highest quality Northern Mead. I had it imported from the beautiful little hamlet of Road's End." He grins and moves to the head of one of the tables, where a decadent-looking throne-like chair sits, another one mirrored on the other table, vacant and reserved for the King of the Night. He picks up the mug that waits for him and raises it into the air, calling out something in the harsh ancient Northern tongue, causing all of the men to fall silent. "We are gathered today," he begins, "to celebrate a long and bountiful alliance with our black brothers, the Guardians of the Night! They have taught us much, and through their alliance we have become more powerful than ever! We sit together now, as equals, ready to forge on into the future and fight the weakness of the Light and bring an era of power to this miserably over-kind world! Rejoice tonight, my followers, for we march for Lionsridge on the morrow! A bit of a sudden announcement, I know, but we are now able to deploy forces of a size unimaginable to any lesser man! For you see, we have gained the perfect fortification, thanks to our allies! We needn't leave but a single platoon to the castle. My soon-to-be general, Rittmeister Edvard, will command the vanguard, and I will lead the main force! Tomorrow, we take the world back from the light, and plunge the world into a new, glorious black age, where the strong prevail and the weak are culled. We humans will no longer be plagued by the weakness of Light!" He laughs a mad laugh and downs the massive mug in his hand in a matter of seconds, slamming it down upon the table.

The men all look quite startled at first, but as the news dawns on them, they begin to cheer one by one, raising their mugs to the air, and soon the noise is deafening, and the festivities continue with increased fervour, and a friendly fight or two might even break out. Ulfang grins at his people, knowing that tomorrow they will use this new zeal to crush his enemies. This was a wonderful day for the Darkness. Finally, the weakness of Light would be purged from this world. The dark would no longer have to hide. He had a special incantation held for just such a day, in fact. As the combined forces marched upon Lionsridge, he would chant, and a black cloud of pure darkness would envelop the sky, blocking out the sun, demoralising the enemy with a perceived bad omen, and shielding the vampires from the harmful effects of the sun. And tomorrow, he would break out his most powerful feat of engineering yet. The Light would forever fear the Von Haren name, and the crossed crimson blades would be the symbol of true strength for years to come.

Adrastos was still spinning from the unlocked memories that were dancing around his head. His senses were stronger then they had been in decades. His thirst for death was clenching at his throat. He followed Ulfang into the Great Hall barely paying attention to his words. He was drunk on power, and the rejoice in the alliance only fed into it.

Beneath half closed eyes, a smokey grey clouded the vampire's black eyes. Standing beside Ulfang as he made his dinner announcement regarding the alliance and plans for the future, he scanned the crowd. His own brethren stood around the outer edge of the room. They weren't exactly happy about dining with the humans, they thought the idea of dining on them to be more appealing. However, as per Adrastos' order, they obeyed, and let the humans to their tasks.

Just as to be expected, the humans felt the same about the presence of such strong and powerful Dark Guardians within their realm. Who and how could a person trust a soul that stands for the very definition of betrayal. However, Adrastos' faith in Ulfang was not wasted. The man was truly a motivational speaker, of sorts. Adrastos could sense the tension levels dropping. They trusted their leader, and the Guardians trusted Adrastos. As long as the two leaders could keep their alliance in tact, there was no reason why they couldn't succeed. There was, however, the threat of Nakhti. The Dark Angel who refused to embrace her darkness. This brought Zuu to mind. He was curious whether or not she had succeeded in confronting the Light Guardians. Even more curious, if she had failed, and why.

The cheering of the men and women before him brought him out of his trance. Reaching for a goblet that sat before him, he raised his glass to Ulfang, then to the audience.

Ulfang nods to his friend of many years and leans back in his throne-like chair at the head of the table, looking pleased with himself. He takes a long swig of his Northern ale and then speaks to his ally. "There's nothing like a big battle to bring two peoples together, eh?" he asks with a grin. "It's time to end this weakness of theirs and bring unity to the land, under the shroud of darkness. I am more than tired of hiding all of the time, aren't you?"

He watches over the jubilation of his subjects with interest. He must admit to being quite excited himself. Not once has he faced a bigger challenge with more at stake than he will tomorrow. It will not put an end to the war, but capturing Lionsridge would mean opening the gates into the land of Light, for his legions to march into and capture. And if he wins, he will be spoken of in history books for ages to come. Not to mention the achievements he'll make once he rules over the land. With the vampires beside him the whole way, of course...
