There is a story that is spun, telling the tale of how there once existed an island continent that was unlike no other. She was a vast land that bore no name, but house many in her green and mountainous arms. This island was beloved by those who lived in her sweet confines, for they had learned to coexist peacefully. The inhabitants never took too much, and if they did, they made sure to give back in equal value. The scenery of this island was quite beautiful. A large mountain range curved along the far north eastern side of the island with the tail end of it curving along the southern end of the island into a cape, forming a nearly two mile wide bay area.

Nestled between the mountains and the bay is a large expanse of forest. The tree line eventually thins out to a wide area of rolling plains that turn into beaches as it leads into the bay. The plains are always green and are often covered in beautiful flower that are known for their fresh scent like morning dew. There are several small rivers that cross over the entirety of the island however they all touch one river in particular. This river nearly splits the island in two which starts at the eastern side of the island and ends at the bay. The area surrounding the main river is typically covered in marshes and low lying ground, making susceptible to flooding during the heavy rain season.

There is one area in particular that is far different from the rest of the island. The difference is that it is nearly barren. This area is dotted with small shrubs and single river snakes through its rocky and sandy surface. The river is flanked on both sides by rocks, forming a small canyon that prevents the water from going far. The area is also surrounded by a rocky hillside that in some areas form miniature mountain ranges where most rain cannot pass through, thus making it dry for most of the year. However, this is only a small portion of the island as a whole.

Despite what one may presume, this island is of course inhabited. Not only by the creatures that live here but also by the people who have made their homes here. Of course, these people are not travelers from a distance land but were born on this island. They come from a long line of human inhabitants that go back quite a few centuries. Typically the people of this island live near the bay or by the rivers due to there being an abundance of water. Some have taken up residence in the mountains despite the strange atmosphere it gives off. The more barren areas of the island are home to a nomadic group of people while the cliff side houses a small population.

There is of course other lands that the people of this nameless island consider to the be the main lands however, the island is not know to them. The two lands are very similar in geography although the main lands are much larger in comparison to the island. There is a reason though, for why the main lands are not aware of the existence of this nameless island.

Dragons. That is what distinguished the island from the main lands, along with its wide variety of other hosts that dwell on the island. These giant creatures ranged from gentle creatures of the woodlands to the savage beasts of the desert. The dragons ranged in appearances that were typically associated with the environment that they lived in. Those who resided in the mountains were often thicker and with a wider girth due help with the cold. The dragons that lived in the desert bore lighter pigments of scales while those that made their homes in the woods were smaller to maneuver around the trees.

The diversity found among the dragons was made use of by the people of the island which meant that many of them were tamed. Traditionally a dragon is given to an individual, if they feel so inclined as to care for one, at a young age so that they may form a bond with said dragon as they grow. They start off as eggs that are kept in what is called the dragon hatchery.

Unfortunately, the diversity of these beautifully savage creatures was destroyed a couple centuries ago when the main lands discovered the island. At first it started with a single traveler who tried to steal an egg from a nest, causing the mother to wreak havoc in the nearby area in search of it. The worst did not come however until said traveler returned to the main lands. They informed the King of what they had seen, and at once the King set out to claim the lands that he deemed to be his by divine right. And so the wars began . . .

At first the inhabitants of the island welcomed the first fleet of men to their shores under the impression they wished to trade. Everything went downhill from there as these men refused to leave despite the grievances placed against them. The message was carried out to the remainder of the Kings fleet. Now was as good a day as any to take what they believed should be their's. They believed in the idea of sharing, but the people of this island knew that these men of foreign lands did not understand the way it worked. The wars lasted for a little more than a century. The dragons population dwindled as multiple hatcheries were taken over by those from the mainland. The dragons hatched from then on were born into war.

However the war itself was not what truly devastated the island, it was what the King found. It was a dark and powerful force that he had misinterpreted to being key to taking the dragons once and for all. He was gravely mistaken. This force was no dragon king. It was malicious and feasted upon the souls of whatever it could get its hands on. Those touched by its sickening disease were morphed into mindless creatures abhorred by all.

All the kings horses, and all the kings men could not put a stop to this force. The King's men were the first to be slain by this force. Soon after the few villages left untouched by the war were overrun by these disgusting creations and eventually the king himself succumbed to this maddening disease. The islands most hated enemy was merely replaced by one far more terrifying. The land was cloaked in a dark and foreboding darkness. There were few places completely free of this disease. The mountains and the desert. The latter was a harsh and unforgiving area that saw fit to kill off whatever it did not want. It showed no mercy to those who stepped onto its grainy lands, but it was not a place any creature not born in the sand could venture into.

The mountains, however, were something else entirely. They remained untouched, not because of its terrain but because of the strange forces that lurked in the dark canopies and snow covered peaks. They had always held some kind of mysticism about them, but no one had dared step foot. Until now.

It took nearly a decade for the island to fight back against the darkness that feasted on them. Killing those who caught the disease was not an option as that only made it spread more. It was like a curse. They at last came to a decision to hide these monstrosities in the caverns that were buried deep in the mountains. They knew not of the extent of these caverns, but they knew that the entrances were far and few between within the mountain range. The day finally arrived for the island and the remaining few soldiers to push back against the diseased.

The islands people found out that the infected were attracted to the those not corrupted by its touch, and so a very tough decision was made. A group of people were to lure the diseased as deep into the caverns as they could. At first no one knew who to send until some pointed out that the soldiers should do it. They were the ones who started to whole mess after all. While many carried this sentiment, others thought it would be cruel to do so besides the soldiers weren't familiar with the mountains. A select few volunteered to lead some of the soldiers into the mountains which meant they would also be giving up their lives.

There would be no return for those who lured the infected into the caverns for the entry ways were sealed off. When the plan was finally enacted, many more lives were lost, but finally, finally they were free of those monsters. Finally the island could break out into cheer as the land was no longer covered in darkness. They vowed to never again let anyone enter their waters.

It has been almost four centuries since then and the land has once again returned to its original state of prosperity. The trees have returned to their lush green. The fields running rampant with flowers, wheat and other necessities. The streams are running clear while birds sing loud and clear for all to hear.

The war caused some to flee into the mountains and the deserts despite the harsh realities that lied in wait for them. Those who entered the desert were surprised to find that people had already made this barren land their home, believing them to be uninhabitable. The soldiers who were left behind were shunned, but some were able to start families although there still lingers that same hatred as once before for what their ancestors had done. While dragons are still integrated into the culture, they are not as heavily relied upon as once before.

The dragon hatcheries are kept safe by a constant patrol, and anyone caught trying to steal a dragon egg were punished. The same punishment went towards stealing an egg from a wild nest. The remains of the war can still be seen, but the land has mostly overtaken them. In regards to the progress the island has made they were able to industrialize a bit. They've figured out how to produce electricity and harness it which gave birth to a few trade cities.

And so our story begins . . .

The dragon academy has reopened once more to teach people of all ages and all regions how to ride a dragon. The academy is located in the foot hills that are located close to the end of the southern edge of the mountain range. The academy was one of the few structures to have survived the war, so some of the facilities are a bit old. Students enrolled here were to live in the dormitories which have been specially designed to also house dragons if they were small enough.

So begins...
