Sarah and Becky giggled to themselves and Becky took Lucius's hand and Sarah took Desten's and they lead them down the road and turned a single corner. The pub was made of wood and laughter rang out from it's doors even so early in the day. A smirk came to Lucius's face as the laughter rang out.

Sarah and Becky giggled as they dragged the two muscular men behind them. They pulled open the heavy wooden doors needing both hands to open them. Lucius and Desten walked in all eyes on them. Followed the ladies to a table in the back of the room. Some people went back to their drinks others whispered to one another about them and some just watched them as if something was going to happen.

Desten and Lucius pulled out the chairs for the young ladies. Sarah and Becky smiled to each other and sat down. Lucius sat next to Becky and Desten beside Sarah. A waitress came over and asked for their drink order. Sarah and Becky ordered their usual and two bowls of beef stew. Lucius gazed over to the bar for a moment "Spiced rum over ice please and bring me a bowl of that stew too. That sounds delightful. Thanks."

The waitress turned to Desten with a soft smile. "And what for you deary?" The waitress looked to be about the same age as Sarah and Becky maybe a year or two 25 at the oldest. She had something in her eyes that the others didn't a responsibility a meaning. Her natural red hair was mostly tide up in a loose bun some of it draping at the sides of her face. Her eyes were a lovely hazel with a natural glow.

"A loaf of bread and the strongest drink in the house." He said looking the waitress. He couldn't help but notice the women's beautiful eyes and vibrant red hair. He held her gaze for a moment and then went back to talking to Sarah. He asked her all he could about where she was born and how she made her living, hoping to learn something useful. "So what do a couple of beautiful ladies such as yourselves do for fun in this town?"

Sarah looked over at Becky with a sly look then back at Desten and answered, " Just try to stay out of trouble." she said as she moved over to sit on his lap. The waitress was back setting down the food when the door broke open with a large burly man stomping threw with a look a anger streaking across his face as he panned threw the room. When his eyes found the table where Desten, Lucius, and the girls where sitting. "And Trouble just found us." Sarah said with a sigh.

"Hey you, What the fuck are you doing with my girlfriend you bastard!!" The man said walking towards the table. The man came at him with his fist reared back making it clear he wasn't going to give Desten the chance to answer with the waitress still standing there between them. Desten quickly moved Sarah back to her seat and was between the man and the waitress before he could even blink. Desten caught the man by the forearm, went under his arm and spun him around throwing the large man into the ground at his feet. The man quickly got up and grabbed a chair but before he could even swing it Desten had his sword drawn and to the mans throat making it clear he didn't want the fight to go on any longer.

At the sound of the door busting open Lucius almost jumped from his seat. Then he quickly regained his composer. He sat calmly at the table watching the furious man seemingly charge at the table. Lucius watched and let out a sigh as Desten took it a step to far and threw the man to the ground. He could hear Desten's sword being awakened from it's sleep. He immediately stood and walked up to the two men. Gently moving the waitress out of the way. "Gentlemen I'm sure this barkeep would appreciate all of his chairs and tables in tacked. Why don't we settle this like real men and have a drinking contest?" Lucius gave a look to Desten 'There is no need to dirty such a lovely blade with his blood.' Lucius whispered to Desten's mind.

The man glared at Sarah and Becky at the table and they quickly slid down a chair. The man pulled out the chair closest to him and turned it around swinging his legs over the back he sat down with a certainty about himself. "You don't know what you just volunteered your friend into." he said with a grin. Lucius ignored him and calmly walked to the chair next to Sarah leaving a spot open for Desten closest to the rude man.

"One bottle of whatever he's drinking and two glasses!" the man said in a booming voice to the waitress even though she was only three steps away. "Would you like me to open a tab for you sir?" she asked with a polite smile.

Desten listened to his cousin's advice and re-sheathed his sword. He walked to the table calmly and sat down next to Lucius. "Oh please do try to take it easy on me. I don't drink that often so it might be hard to keep pace." Desten joked with a grin towards the large man who sat before him. "Okay boy when I out drink you you're going to give me that pretty sword of yours then leave this town and never return here again. You got that?" the large man said with a sneer.

"Okay and when I win you're going to pay for all of our food and drinks in the pub till the day my cousin and I leave, and just for shits and giggles you're going to apologize to this kind young waitress for being so rude and busting in the door like that. Am I understood?" Desten asked with a now blank expression.

The large man let out a laugh that sounded more like a mix between a belch and a laugh. "You got some balls kid I will give you that and just to humor you I accept your challenge." he said as the waitress returned with their drinks.

Desten looked at his cousin with a grin, 'This is going to be fun.' He said with a bit of joy in his thoughts. They started to shoot shot after shot and after the first 15 the large man started to waver, Desten however seemed unfazed. As they cashed the first bottle Desten looked at the man and smiled. "You're starting to look a bit green there sir, are you sure you want to continue?"

"I won'ts loose to a half coalked nubby likes you. Woman keep them coming." the man said with a slur. They continued to shoot until they got to half way down the second bottle and the man raised his 27th shot, looked at the glass and fell backwards to the ground with a load thud. "Well I guess he's had enough." Desten said with a smile. He grabbed the bottle and turned to Lucius, "Hey cousin want some? A tab just opened up."

Lucius, looked to his cousin with a smile and flagged the waitress to bring him a fresh glass."Heck why not." The waitress soon returned with a new glass. "Here you are sir." she said with a bright smile. She was happy that they had settled things the way they had instead of breaking tables and chairs. "Excuse me? We never got your name." Lucius asked. "Scarlett, Scarlett Callerfox nice to meet you and welcome to Joe's." she smiled a sweet smile to both of them and left the table never going out of eye sight.

Lucius poured himself a glass and downed it. "Man...why would you drink that? It tastes..." he paused and took a bite out of the bread. He poured another glass for himself and drank it. Sarah and Becky had dragged the drunken man away from the table and had left seeing how embarrassed they were. "Desten, what's the point? This doesn't do anything for us and it tastes well it doesn't taste good."

One random man pulled Scarlet over. "Next bottles on me." he said loud enough for everyone close by to hear. A confidant smile came to Lucius's face. "You ready to drink him out of town?" Lucius asked eying the doorway were the women had taken the drunk.

"I drink this shit cause it's the strongest so it has the best chance of making me feel a little tingle and it allows me to put BOYs like him in his place without wasting to much." Desten said with a slight grin, his eyes never leaving the waitress. She was very pretty and definitely seemed different, but to Desten different is good.

Desten's focus went back to his cousin as he asked him if he wanted to drink his "opponent" out of this town. "Hell I think we have learned enough for the night so why not. You're a better drinking buddy any way. At least with you I don't feel like I'm wasting the 'fun juice'." He said as he raised another shot to his mouth.

Desten leaned in a bit more to keep prying ears from hearing him. "So, what's the plan for tomorrow? Shall we explore this new city more or shall we good deeper into the 'unknown'?" Desten asked as he took a peace of bread and ate it. He downed a few more shots while he waited for Lucius to answer.

Lucius took another drink "I think we should stay another day or two. We really didn't learn anything other than human women find us attractive." Lucius joked. The two of them finished off the second bottle and Lucius waved Scarlett over. "Would you please bring us each a bottle?" he asked her kindly. Scarlett couldn't help but stair for a moment as other people who over heard turned their heads. Many men would have been under the table half way threw the first bottle.

"Sure thing." she said shaking herself out of her shocked state. She went to get the two bottles. "I take it you gentle men want to stay with us seeing as your rooms are already paid?" she asked motioning to the spare rooms upstairs they kept open for men who couldn't make it out the door much less home.

"That sounds like a wonderful idea thank you, Miss Scarlett." Lucius bowed his head slightly then opened his bottle and tilted it back. It was odd to see Lucius drink he never was much of a partier he was always the pessimistic one when it came to drinking. He thought it was a waist of money and tasted awful.

"Don't forget to save some for tomorrow." Scarlett joked before heading off to take care of other customers. Scarlett seemed to glide around the room a bright smile always on her lovely face.

Lucius and Desten drank and laughed together till shortly after night fall when a rumor started going around the pup that some man had been drained dry by a vampire and cast out of the forest. Lucius's ears perked up and he recapped his drink. He didn't say a word to Desten he didn't have to. They both stood and walked out following the whispered of frightened humans.

Desten topped off the last of his bottle just as Scarlett brought him a new one that was requested by Lucius. He found himself a little puzzled because it seemed to him that Lucius was actually enjoying drinking and relaxing which was a rare sight, but rather than question it he figured it would be better to just let Lucius enjoy himself for once. Even a think tank like him needs to unwind sometimes. He also rather enjoy watching Scarlett move across the room with such precision and grace. Desten would have been willing to wager that she could do all of her work blindfolded and do it better than any other server he had ever came across before.

He seemed to be almost in a trance watching her as he continued on his drink, until he over herd one of the customers that came in talking of a man completely drained of his blood found right on the edge of the forest. Left there like tossed out trash. Desten looked over at his cousin also took notice and with out speaking a word they were both up and out the door towards the direction that the heard the corps had been found.

"Looks like we get to see first hand at how the humans handle a message from the vamps." he said as Lucius and him ran at a very slow pace to seem more human. "Who knows maybe we will get lucky and get to find some action up here while we are at it." he said with a repressed grin.

When they got to the seen, the body was still laying on the ground. It wasn't much more than skin and bones now that the vampire had drank the poor man dry. "The poor bastard didn't stand a chance. Looks like there are several different bite marks on him, all very recent." He said as he leaned in closer to the body. The stench of a vampire was all over the body and not just one but two. The smell of dead that don't wrote made his nose hurt but the smell isn't what was getting his attention, it was all the bites. There were well over five different places he had been bit, way more times than what would have been necessary. 'It's like they were playing with their food before they killed it,' he thought to where Lucius could hear it. This was much worse than what he thought they would do. "And they call us the beasts." He said as he looked back up scanning the forest looking to see if the culprit was still around, this seemed like the work of someone who might stick around to marvel in their own handy work.

Lucius and the medic escorted the woman home. Lucius asked Desten to head back to the pub and make sure their rooms were reserved. Lucius was greeted by a four year old boy who'd woken up looking for his mommy and a baby crying for attention. The medic tended to the mother as Lucius took the boy by the hand and led him into the room with his baby sister who was crying. Lucius picked up the little one and she soon stopped crying. He then took the little boy to the only bed in the house and told him to lye down.

"What's wrong with mommy?" he asked looking deep into Lucius's eyes.

"She's very sad right now and she will be for a very long time. Your mother is going to need your help now. Do you understand?" The young boy nodded a yes and pulled the covers over his legs. "Good. You're going to have to be strong for your mommy making sure she eats and sleeps but tonight this nice medic is going to take care of mom okay." Lucius almost whispered. The young boy looked up to Lucius and knew what he said was true. "Do you need anything before you go to bed?" he asked the young boy. The boy simply shook his head no and slid down into bed and closed his eyes. Lucius smiled softly and then a unpleasant smell came to his nose. He stood up and walked out of the room and found where the mother kept the clean cloth.

He set her down on the table and found the water bowl he soaked a rag and rung it out. He then did his best to change this little girl. This baby that wasn't even as long as his forearm. He cleaned her up and she dribbled out cute noises as he made faces at the stench. Her crystal blue eyes smiling back at him made him smile. He washed up and placed her back in her bassinet.

He walked into the living room to see that the mother was asleep and the medic was relieved. "Is she going to be alright?" Lucius asked. The Medic nodded and turned back to his patient. Lucius chose to take his leave and walk back to the pup.

All the while Scarlett and the barkeep were arguing. Desten could hear the argument from outside. "You still owe me for last month!" Scarlett protested.

"Wretch I paid you what you deserve." he said sticking his nose up at her.

"You paid me half of what I earned last month and none of what I got this month."

"You've gotten every penny."

"My tips keep getting messed with. Did you think I wouldn't notice!"

That's when Desten entered the pub. Pure silence filled the air for a moment before Scarlett returned to her usual happy self. "Well if it isn't the bottomless pit!" she joked a bright smile on her face. "Did you still want those rooms? I just finished putting fresh sheets on them if you're still interested." she said walking closer to him.

A slight grin crossed Desten's face at the "bottomless pit!" comment. "Yes my cousin and I will be staying here if you don't mind. He will be back shortly I am sure. I hope it's not any extra trouble on you miss." he said with a soft undertone. He couldn't help but wonder why the barkeep and her were having so much trouble with money disputes, the place seemed to run pretty smoothly and it stayed rather busy form what he saw tonight. Either way it really wasn't his business so he figured he would keep the question to himself for now.

"So do you mind if I ask which room is mine?" he said as he approached Scarlett. He didn't know the place and he didn't want to come off as rude. He couldn't get the thought of that mans body out of his head or the way those vampires tried to take that it back and the grieving widow with it. Now he was worrying about what was wrong with this woman that he just met.

Scarlett smiled brightly "Not a problem." she said walking in front of him. She walked to a cut out in the counter and lifted it up. "Follow me." Scarlett looked over her shoulder with a smile that could bring happiness to the dead. She lead him to some hidden stairs to a hallway the length of the building. There were five doors four bedrooms and one bathrooms. "This is my room the barkeeps sons room and the two guest rooms. Please take your pick." she opened the doors to the two rooms.

The rooms were almost identical almost mirror images of each other. Only the one on the right had a desk and the one on the left did not. Scarlett, walked into the room on the left. "I changed the sheets in both of the rooms, swept, and dusted we haven't had guest in a long while." she smiled at him. "My room is across the hall if you need anything." she walked out of the room. "If you'll excuse me I need to finish cleaning down stairs. Please enjoy your stay at Joe's pub."

She walked down the stairs and grabbed a broom and started sweeping the floor. "And that's why we call you two faced." the barkeep said smugly. Scarlett glared at him. "Don't think that conversation is over we'll continue it some other time."

Lucius walked threw the front door seeing the glare on Scarlett's face. Scarlett lived up to her nickname and had a bright beautiful smile. "Your friend is upstairs would you like me to show you the way?" Lucius returned her smile "No, thank you I can make it." he replied. He walked up the stairs.

Desten was at the end of the hall coming form the shower when Lucius came up the stairs. "So how is the widow doing...?" he started to say then a foul odder hit his nose. A big grin went across his face as Lucius got closer. "I was wondering how the vamps could smell us before. Now I know." he said with a bit of a snicker.

"Your room is the one on the left with the desk in it. I figured you would get more use out of it than I would. We need to think of a plan as to how we are going to get closer to the royal family without setting off to many more vampires." He said before Lucius got threw his doorway and shut the door on him. "Well...good night to you too." Desten said as he walked the rest of the way to his room. He shut the door and laid down hoping that sleep would come to him soon.

Desten rolled around in his bed for what seemed like hours just thinking about what had transpired today. They had only been in this town for two days and already they have had people pissed, vampires trying to run a muck and a girl he just can't get out of his head. Right as he thought of Scarlett he herd a sound from outside his room.

Desten rose from his bed and went out into the hall and to the stairs where he found the young waitress weeping on the top step. "I'm so sorry to bug you miss, but may I ask what is causing you to cry?"

Scarlett quickly brushed the tears from her cheeks and turned to face him. "Whatever do you mean?" she asked in a cracked voice. As the words left her mouth she knew there was no way of hiding her tears now. "I'm sorry sir I didn't mean to be so loud." she apologized her eyes filling with tears. She was nothing but a burden sometimes. "Life's just hard but isn't every ones? I'm crying over silly things. I guess." she gave him a soft smile.

Desten walked closer and sat down on the floor close to her. With his back against the wall he could feel the tips of her loose hair tickling the side of his arm. "If they're silly things you wouldn't be crying would you?"

Scarlett looked at him she bit her lip softly holding back her tears. A single tear escaped from her right eye. "No, I wouldn't." she rearranging herself to face him. She placed her back against the opposite wall. "Do you really want to hear a waitresses problems?" she asked with a hint of sarcasm threw her cracking voice.

"I have plenty of time."

At that Scarlett let her tears fall freely they slid down her pale face. Scarlett cried for a minute or two. Scarlett wiped some of the tears from her face. "I guess the reason I'm crying is my boss is stealing from me. I know everyone needs money, and I shouldn't be complaining but..." she paused thinking of whether or not to tell this complete stranger her story.

There was a short pause before Desten spoke. "I know everyone needs money but..."

"But I'm a single mom. I have a six year old daughter her name is Ruby. Her father walked out on us when he found out I was with child. I want to send her to school but she'd be made fun of for being father less. So I'm trying to save to be able to teach her myself."

Desten was at a loss for words, he had no idea Scarlett was a mother. The woman showed not signs of ever having a child and didn't put off the sent of children. Desten had to admit to himself that she hid that part about her life very well. He looked at her for a moment and let the silence set in.

"So your manager is taking money from you but its money you can't afford to lose." he said as he looked into her eyes and could almost feel her pain. "Well maybe this can help." he reached into his pocket and pulled out a well polished ruby the size of the palm of his hand that had been smoothed and shaped so that it could fit into his pocket but not cause itself to be a burden on him.

He reached out with one hand pulling her's and placing the large stone in it with the other and with a big smile he closed her hand around it.

Scarlett's heart stopped for a moment her eyes fixed on the stone in her hand. "This can't be real." she whispered thinking out loud. After a long moment she looked up to Desten. "Who are you?" she asked her eyes locked onto his. "How can you afford to carry something like this? I don't even know your name." Scarlett's mind was racing. Was she in front of royalty? Who was this man in front of her? Scarlett held open her hand. "I don't deserve this...I couldn't possibly take it." she said completely over whelmed.

"Like you said some people need money. Well some people are lucky enough not to."

Scarlett was at a loss for words her fingers slowly curled over the red gem. The sound of a door slowly opening filled the silence. Ruby came out into the hallway wearing her night gown her frizzy red hair draping down her sides. She was rubbing her eyes. "Moma? Why are you out here?" she asked in a groggy voice. Scarlett quickly stood "Ruby! Hun what are you doing up?" Scarlett walked over to Ruby kneeling down to her level. Ruby looked over her mom's shoulder at Desten her innocent blue eyes catching his. "Hi mister are you here to save my mommy?"

"Honey what do I need saving from?" Scarlett asked her daughter with concern.

"Mister Joe...I don't like it when he makes you cry." Ruby said innocently. Scarlett sighed she didn't want Desten to know that now only was her boss a thief but he was abusive.

Desten's eyes narrowed a little bit at the mention of a man hurting Scarlett. He had never liked the thought of a man ever harming a woman. The thought of it burned him up inside, but for the sake of the child and her mother he forced himself to calm down.

Desten took a deep breath and took a quick look at Scarlett then back at Ruby. "Don't worry little miss, I will see to it that your mother never has to deal with that horrible man ever again. I promise he will never be able to make your mother cry again and that you to will be safe from here on out ok?" He said with a warm smile.

Desten didn't exactly know why he was saying these things but he felt like it was the right thing to do. After all this woman has been nothing but kind to him and his cousin and he wouldn't just stand by and let things like this continue. He understood the philosophy his father taught him long ago. 'You can't save every one, but if you're going to try you better give it your all.' and for some unknown reason this little girl and the waitress were worth it to him.

Ruby smiled a smile so bright it would make anyone's day. She quickly ran around her mother and wrapped Desten in her arms in what was for her the biggest hug she'd ever given. "Oh thank you Mister!" she said kissing him on the cheek. Scarlett's face was filled with a mixture of shock and joy. She was happy Ruby wouldn't have to worry any more and that they could live a happy life together, shocked that a man she'd just met would give them such a thing, and say something so bold.

"Sir, what you've already done for us is enough. You don't have to do anything else." Scarlett insisted as she slowly walked over to Ruby and pulled her off of Desten's lap.

Ruby looked up at her mom with confusion and a little frustration. "Moma..." Ruby started to say but figured she better not. She turned back to Desten. Her eyes filled with hope and a dream of him saving the day and them no longer having to live here. "My name's Ruby. It's nice to meet you Mister. Thank you for saving my moma and I hope you enjoy your stay at Joe's." she said in a way only the most innocent could.

"Ruby, I'll be to bed in a minute okay." Scarlett lightly placed her hand on Ruby's back and lead her back to the room. "Good night Mister see you tomorrow." Ruby smiled one last time at Desten and then walked back into the room. A thump could be heard from the hallway were Ruby had jumped onto their bed with joy.

Scarlett chuckled softly to herself her daughters joy was her joy. "Thank you I can never repay you for the kindness you've already shown." Scarlett was about to turn and go to her room when she paused. "Sir? What is your name?" She asked.

Desten was caught a little off guard by the child's hug. He didn't really know how to react so he just sat there and smiled as she talked to he mom and him. When Ruby ran off as her mother had said Desten felt a little bit tug at his heart. Hearing the little one plop down on her bed caused a bit of another smile to tug at the edges of his mouth.

"Don't worry about it ok. I'm glad to help and it sounds like this man needs to learn how to respect women." he said trying to suppress a growl that was trying so desperately to escape to show just how much he didn't like the man. "Before I answer your question I want you to do something for me ok. tomorrow when you wake up I want you to take Ruby out and have the day off. But i want you to come back around noon so we can discuss things." he said with a more stern tone.

"If you can do that for me tomorrow, then and only then will i tell you my name." He said with a playful smile. He usually wouldn't even take the chance of telling someone what his name is. Last and all. He still didn't really like the idea of it, but for the sake of Scarlett and little Ruby there was something that he needed to take care of and he doesn't want her around to see what he was up to. 'Hopefully using Ruby as a great reason to get out for the day would work and the fact that money was not problem with that gem he gave her.' He thought to himself.

"Have a good night and don't worry. By tomorrow you and your daughter will be free of this money and owner issue." He said as he got up and headed back towards his room.

Scarlett looked at him confused and thought for a moment. "Joe's not going to be happy about me disappearing. Tomorrow is Tuesday Mr.Wallcroft will be in...but he shouldn't come in till afternoon." she thought out loud it was obvious she cared for her customers however drunk and rude they maybe. "I can't remember the last time I had a day off. Ruby would love that." she ran her thumb over the gem in her hand. "I guess now we can afford to take a day off." she smiled at him. "Thank you." her eyes smiled brightly at him before she turned to go to her room. "Good night." she whispered gently closing the door behind her.

The next day Scarlett woke Ruby early much earlier than she'd ever gotten up before. "Let's go shopping!" Scarlett said with excitement she was already dressed and ready to go. Scarlett wore her hair down. Something Ruby hadn't seen in a very long time. Ruby was taken back by her mother's excitement and shopping...Her mom wanted to spend money? Ruby smiled and crawled out of bed her mother rushing her to get ready.

"Hurry I want to get there right when all the booths open so we get first pick." Scarlett said almost jumping with excitement.

Ruby hurried to get dressed and Scarlett had picked out Ruby's nicest dress and quickly braided her fizzy red hair. "Beautiful!" Scarlett rejoiced and the two of them snuk out of the Pub trying not to wake their guests.

Ruby and Scarlett laughed, danced, played, and shopped for their needs and some of their wants. Scarlett and Ruby were having so much fun they almost forgot they had to go back to the pub. Ruby pouted when her mother remembered she had to go back to work. "Ruby, hun it'll be okay we'll be able to do this more often now." Scarlett reassured her daughter before they walked into the pub's doors all eyes on them.

"Ruby, go up stairs." Scarlett's smile had hidden it's self away and she could feel her heart racing she feared what Joe would say or do now that she was back.

Lucius, Desten and Joe were all sitting at a table in the back chatting.

Shortly after Scarlett left with Ruby Desten found his pouch that he carried with him that was full of precious stones. Only needing about half of what he had in order to accomplish what he wanted to do he stashed the rest of them in Lucius's bag. Desten walked down the stairs and waited at the table closest to the door.

Around 10 the owner came in threw the door expecting to find Scarlett hard at work getting ready for the day. What he found was a man sitting at a table facing him. "What the hell is going on here and where the hell is Scarlett?" the man asked with a face that was a cross of anger and confusion.

"Relax my dear sir." Desten said as he got up from the table and walked over to the owner. "I gave her the morning off."

"The morning off?" Joe said with a now much more stern face. "And who the hell do you think you are telling my employee that she can have time off. I need her happy ass here working so I can make some damn money and speaking of money how the hell can that wench afford to take time off? Last I checked she could barely afford to eat let alone go out." he said with a bit of a grin forming on his face.

"Scarlett," Desten emphasized, "has the money because I gave it to her. Because unlike greedy bar keepers I can spare a few coins for a mother and her wonderful daughter."

Joe raised his eyebrows at Desten's comment. "Greedy bar keeper am I? Well mister money bags I hope you can spare enough money to help support that wench and her child because after this nice little stunt she is no longer needed in my bar." Joe turned to leave but before he could even take a step Desten turned him around and picked him up. His fangs starting to show even in his human form.

"I wasn't done talking to you yet. I didn't have her leave for the morning just to get fired. I promised that sweet little girl that i would make there problems go away and I intend to do just that. Now we are going to go sit in that back corner and have a nice long talk. My cousin will be joining us to help make sure I don't tear you limb form limb but I can't promise he would be able to stop me if you keep acting so rude. Am I clear?" He said with a growl

Joe had turned white with fear. He could feel the color drain from his face as he stared into the eyes of what he could only assume was a span of the devil himself. "Am I clear?" Rang threw his head like a knife and he nodded, but he didn't know if it was more out of fear or understanding.

"Good," Desten said as he put the man down and held out an arm showing the way to which table he had chosen. He turned and looked over his shoulder to see his cousin getting up from sitting on the stairs just listening to them. 'I know you don't approve of the way I went about that or about the way I am using my money but a young woman and her daughter are counting on me.' He said threw thought as he went in front of Lucius to the table in the back.

Joe sat down still shaking and not letting his eyes leave Desten, fearing the man might just decide to run him threw instead of talk. "So my good sir, what is it that you would like to talk to me about?" He said in a rather calm voice even though his face was still a pale color from the encounter just moments ago.

"Joe I'm going to get right to it, I want to buy this place form you." Desten said with confidence.

Joe almost let out a laugh but for the fear of what might happen he held it in. With a deep breath he continued. "You can't be serious can you. This place has been my bar for 20 some odd years. I'm not going to just hand it over to some stranger even if you are not a human."

"I believe you would hand it over if I gave you something you wanted." Desten said as he reached down for the bag. He lifted it up and started to turn it over and empty it.

"What you could you possibly have that I would waaaaaaaa...." Joe started to say, but fell short as the gems came falling out of the bag. He reached down and grabbed a diamond the size of his fist. Who the hell was this man and how the hell did he get his hands on so many of these gems.

Desten pulled the diamond back and looked the man in the eye. "Now here is my deal. You give me the key and the deed to this bar, you walk out that door, and you never come back in here again. If you can do that all of these are yours as payment." Desten gathered all the gems and put them back in the bag. "So yes or no?"

Joe didn't like the idea of giving up the bar but he would be a full not to take this man up on the offer. With those gems he could build this damn bar 13 times over. "Sir you have yourself a deal."

After all the arrangements had been made and the trade had been made final It was about mid noon. Lucius was finishing up the little odds and ends to help make sure Joe couldn't go back on this and if someone came snooping it wouldn't look like more than a regular trade. Desten really wasn't good at the paper part like his cousin which is one of the main reasons he was glad to have him along. "Now that that is all taken care of you have a nice day Joe." Joe wasn't to happy to here those words. "Oh and Joe if I ever hear of you Ever harming a woman again, especially Scarlett, I will come and rip your still beating heart from your chest." Desten said with a smile.

As soon as Desten finished that statement Scarlett came threw the front door with little Ruby right behind her. Desten saw the worry go across he face and heard her tell Ruby to go upstairs. They all three got up form the table, Lucius leading Joe to the door and shaking in his hand that was now trembling violently, and Desten headed towards Scarlett. "Do you have a moment to talk?"

Scarlett watched as Joe left shaking Lucius's hand with a face that hadn't quiet regained it's color. Joe smiled a fake smile to Scarlett out of fear what the two creatures would do to him if he didn't. Scarlett looked over to Desten with confusion in her eyes and curiosity on her face. Ruby had been watching from the stairs as she always did and when Mister Joe left she hurried down to her mother's side with a skip in her step.

Lucius smiled down at Ruby. "Hi, Miss Ruby. My name is Lucius. Would you like to play a game of cards with me while my cousin and your mom talk?" Lucius asked Ruby looking up to Scarlett making sure it was okay with her first. Scarlett nodded and turned back to Desten. "I'd love to! What game?!" Ruby asked skipping over to the table in the far corner of the room. Lucius followed suit with a smile. "Well what games do you know?" Lucius asked as they finished making their way to the table.

Scarlett walked over to Desten at the other table. "What did you want to talk about?" She asked hesitantly she wasn't quiet certain she wanted to know what just happened. She took the seat that was closest to her, her eyes never leaving Desten as he walked around the table to sit across from her. Scarlett folded her hands on top of the table. She'd seen the closed sign still up and wondered what on Hypersaurs could be going on.

Desten sat down across from Scarlett and watched as her body let off all signs of unease. "Miss Scarlett, I have a favor to ask of you." He said in a calm yet firm tone. "You see I have recently ran into a bit of a problem for myself and I figured if anyone could help me it would be you."

Desten leaned slightly back in the chair keeping eye contact with the now curious looking Scarlett. "See my problem is that I have recently come into possession of this quaint little bar that I happened to come to like quite a lot. Now as much as I do love this place i have to say I wasn't all to impressed with the way the management handled themselves and the employees, and as much as I would love and run the bar myself, I go from one place to the next traveling so much that I just wouldn't be there enough to kick the place into the shape I know it could be." at this point Desten is looking around the bar really grasping what he was planning on doing and how to go about making it all happen.

Desten set the chair down and looked Scarlett in the eyes. "So my problem is that I need a person who is not just good but great with people, can handle many jobs at once, can take my orders and carry them out to a "T", has an open mind, and....wants to live life not having to worry about money." He Said with a smile as he set back. "You wouldn't happen to know of anyone who might be interested in taking that job now would you?"

Scarlett sat there in shock for a moment..."You bought the pub? Joe's had this place for 26 years how'd you talk him out of it? Why are you asking me to..." a thousand more questions ran threw her head. She stopped and took a breath. "I would love to." she said calming herself. "I would love to continue to work here....for you." she added not quiet sure what was going on. She just couldn't imagine this being reality. She looked over her shoulder to Ruby who was laughing at Lucius who had just lost the game. A small smile came to her face at the sight of her daughter's happiness.

She turned back to Desten. "Thank you so very much for this opportunity. I take it from the conversation last night there is more to discuss before you tell me your name?" She asked leaning forward with a new confidence about her. Before Desten could answer the door opened and an old man stood in the door way. It was Mr.Wallcroft "Scarlett where is everyone? This place is generally packed by now." Mr.Wallcroft asked as he made his way to his seat at the bar.

Scarlett excused herself and walked behind the bar. "Well Mr.Wallcroft it seems as of today Joe's pub is under new ownership. Could I get you your usual?"

"Is that so? Yes that'll be fine Miss Scarlett." Mr.Wallcroft answered. Scarlett poured him a glass of brandy and handed him a paper and pen. "I have more business to tend to Mr.Wallcroft so if you'll excuse me." she slide away from behind the bar and told the kitchen staff to cook something up before heading back to the table.

"Now where were we?" she asked sitting back down. "And don't worry about Mr.Wallcroft he's mostly deaf. Sweet man." she added feeling something off of Desten.

Desten watched as Scarlett to great care of the elderly man. He was happy to see that she indeed wanted to stay here. After Scarlett had helped the man she came back and sat once more in front of him. "Well I'm glad to see I chose the right person as my manager. Keep stuff like that up and who knows maybe someday you will be the owner." he mused with a big smile.

The smile was only short lived as he got up form the table. "For now that is all I can share, Lucius and I have a few other things that need to be dealt with to day but we will be back here later this evening ok?" he said as he started to walk towards the table where Lucius was getting schooled buy little Ruby on how to play cards.

"I'm sorry to take my cousin away form you Miss Ruby but we have some other things we have to do. I promise though that we will be back soon and you can continue with the lesson then." Desten said as he patted Ruby on the head lightly then looked at Lucius. 'We need to go look at the forest one more time. I want to get a better feel of what happened and see if we can find anything of use.' he communicated threw thought.

As they got up and headed towards the door Desten remembered that he had almost forgotten his promise. He quickly turned to Scarlett and shouted, "The name is Desten Darkwood by the way." With that Desten turned back towards the door and left.

Scarlett, returned the smile but it faded just as quickly when Desten stood. Scarlett was slightly annoyed at Desten's response. "For now that is all I can share, Lucius and I have a few other things that need to be dealt with to day but we will be back here later this evening okay?"

'I guess it'll have to be.' she thought to herself. Scarlett had so many questions and wanted to know how he could afford such things. Scarlett smiled at the sight of Ruby schooling Lucius at cards. Scarlett chuckled at Ruby's reaction.
Ruby pouted slightly and nodded to Desten. She looked up at him with the biggest puppy eyes. That's when Desten told her "I promise though that we will be back soon and you can continue with the lesson then." Ruby's face lit up at the mention of them coming back.

Scarlett quickly realized that Desten was about to leave with out telling her his name. She started to stand and open her mouth when he kept his promise. "The name is Desten Darkwood by the way." Scarlett nodded as Desten left along with his cousin. She walked over to Ruby. "What a nice man Mr.Desten is." Scarlett knelt down to Ruby's level.

Ruby quickly added "And Mr.Lucius!" she said with the brightest smile. Scarlett couldn't help but return the smile. Ruby hoped out of her seat. "I'm going to go unpack and practice playing cards so that when Mr.Lucius gets back we can play." Ruby announced with excitement.

"That sounds like a wonderful plan. I'm going to open up shop and get to work." Scarlett watched as her daughter skipped to the edge of the stairs. "Oh and Ruby!" Ruby stopped and turned towards her mother. "You're welcome downstairs now as long as you stay in your seat."

Ruby's face lit up so bright even Mr.Wallcroft chuckled and with that Ruby ran up stairs and tried on her new dresses and played in the warped mirror they had. Ruby, kept herself entertained.

Scarlett, walked to the door and flipped over the sign and lit the lamps out side. She glided back over to behind the bar where Mr.Wallcroft's food was just coming out. "Here you are Mr.Wallcroft. Enjoy your meal." she said with a glimmer about her. Mr.Wallcroft just smiled he'd been watching Miss Scarlett's troubles and had always admired her brightness to her customers even threw the darkness in her life.

Soon the pub was full of people like every night but tonight was a little different. The whole place was full of laughter even Ruby was sitting at the far corner of the bar giggling at the faces her mother made. The place was full of life and plenty of noise. When Mr.Wallcroft left Scarlett and Ruby said their goodbyes with their voices in sink. Everyone in the pub that heard got a laugh out of how perfect it was.

No one asked where Joe was they just figured he wanted a night off. That or nobody missed him. When Scarlett went to clean the bar where Mr.Wallcroft sat she almost fell over. Mr.Wallcroft had tipped three gold piece. Scarlett's eyes were wide and her face bright her eyes brimming with tears. When some other customer needed something. She snatched up the gold and placed them in her apron and moved on with her night.
