Robert Langley

"Life needs excitement and adventure, but... It also needs some purpose."

0 · 821 views · located in The Final Frontier

a character in “The Blackbird's Cry”, as played by Lord Saethos

Description

"Why only reach for the stars when there's so much more beyond them?"

ImageName: Robert C.B. Langley (Robert Charles Byron Langley)
Sex: Male
Age: 24
Race: British Isles Heritage (born and raised on Earth)

Physical Description: Robert is quite slim, but athletic. His boyish features keep assumptions of his age on the younger end of the spectrum, which can either be to his delight or embarrassment. It has also been noted that he has good skin; healthy, very little blemishing, soft, with very little creasing or weathering. Robert likes to keep his hair short and parted from left to right. His bright blue eyes are complimented by his long eye lashes, and bordered by naturally thin, long eyebrows.
Clothing:
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 150
Skin Color: Pale, but can become more olive toned in the summer.
Hair Color: Jet black
Eye Color: Bright blue

Home Colony: Earth
Occupation: Robert "worked" under his father and grandfather at Langley Industries, testing weapons and armor, performing maintenance work on machinery, research and development, sales, accounting, and several other occupations within the company. Robert is also a bit of a "career" explorer, venturing across the Earth to see it's many amazing and beautiful places, much to the chagrin of his father.

History/Bio: Robert was born and raised in a family of considerable wealth. The Langley's had arrived in the UK from Canada when his Great-Grandfather decided to look for brighter futures abroad. Unfortunately, things had not been all he had hoped in the UK, and he struggled to provide the better life for his family he had hoped to give them. Where he had struggled however, his son (Robert's grandfather) Victor had been able to enjoy a prestigious education (paid for by great-grandfather's hard work), and would go on to start one of the most profitable military tech companies in the world, specializing in weapons and armor.

Richard (Robert's father, and Victor's son) followed in his father's footsteps, learning the importance of hard work and responsibility at an early age, and complementing that with an equally prestigious education. Richard worked hard at Langley Industries, but it wasn't too long before he had prove his worth to Victor as an executive, which is how Richard took the position of CEO. The two together, father and son, made Langley Industries into an even more titanic company, and soon found themselves supplying weapons to the colonies, colonists, and various governments and corporations with interests on Earth, and off.

But where the stories of Victor and Richard are stories of hard work and success, Robert's tale... Diverges. After graduating high school at 18, he went on to an equally prestigious education, studying both business, engineering, and mechanics. He did well, and graduated at 24 with a few diplomas and bachelors under his belt, but Robert had never quite learned the importance of responsibility. He often seemed to have expectations for how things should go for him, thought he could wield his family name or wealth as though it were a shield or weapon, and had difficulty being reliable for work.

By no means was Robert a mean person, an angry person, or even a bad person. But he was restless, easily bored, and perhaps assumed he deserved things without having earned them. Travel has long been a passion of his, as has thrill seeking, and socializing (extroversion and speech craft have always been strong points of his). Robert's adventurous spirit has brought down the wrath of his father on more than one occasion, but in an attempt to please his father, experience some adventure, and learn some of the skills and life lessons he sorely needs, the young Langley boy has made a decision that has surprised more than a few people...

He's signed up as a crew member for The Blackbird's Cry...

Special Skills: Like his father and grandfather, Robert has been formally educated in business, engineering, and mechanics. This means he's skilled in business related areas (such as trade and commerce) and maintenance/mechanics/etc. Additionally, working at Langley Industries means he's been heavily trained in the maintenance and use of various weapons, from pistols to assault rifles, and even war suits.

So begins...

The shuttle ride had been long - nearly sixteen hours. It had also been boring - the windows had been kept dark, and communications were prohibited. Perhaps this was unnecessary, but the destination - Taiyō Shipyard - and its owner, the legendary shipbuilder Taiyō himself, liked their privacy. Everyone knew the shipyard was located around Mercury, but anyone traveling to visit the location was forced to keep his rules.

The seven people aboard the shuttle were quite different from each other, but they all had the same reason for the journey: they were all new members of a crew of space explorers, chosen to board the Blackbird's Cry, a starship only recently finished but already drawing the attention of many. Their captain: Amaya Rose, a woman whose name inspired apprehension to many. Her first three ships had all ended in tragedy, the final one of which had lost all hands, except for Captain Rose herself. Perhaps it was just bad luck... perhaps it was something more.

Astraeus Economos, known as Eco to his friends, rose to his feet as the shuttle settled into dock at the shipyard. He had been chosen to be first mate aboard the new ship, and he brushed a quick hand down his new suit. It was nicer clothes than he'd ever had before, gifted along with most of his new wardrobe.

Turning to the others as the door slid open, Eco smiled and cheerfully called out, "All right everybody! We're here! Last one out's a rotten egg!"

Chuckling, Eco stepped out the door and nodded in greeting to the trio of guards awaiting the group.

"Welcome," the lead guard said, stepping forward and smiling tightly through his mustache and goatee. "I am Matias, head security of the Blackbird's Cry. You are Eco, correct? Our new first mate?"

"That's me!" Eco said, shaking Matias' hand. "Thanks for meeting us."

"That's my job," Matias said, maintaining his smile. "I'm also here to greet the others."

"Of course," Eco said, turning back to the shuttle. "I'll let them make their own introductions."

***

The Blackbird's Cry sat on the dark side of Mercury, clearly visible from where Amaya Rose sat. Around her, the technicians and builders of Taiyō Shipyard were still celebrating the successful completion of the starship, but to its new captain, it hardly seemed believable. It had been three long years since she had flown aboard a ship, three long years since her entire crew had been lost on the doomed voyage of the Spriggan.

Now, here she sat, her father's journal in one hand and a glass of wine in the other, although the wine remained untouched and the journal firmly closed. Amaya simply couldn't take her eyes off the ship. It was beautiful, and striking, in a way no other ship had seemed to her, nor perhaps would it again. For this ship - this ship had been made for her.

The circumstances of the Cry's construction were too long to go over in her head, so Amaya didn't bother. The past few years had seemed unreal to her, but now, now the reality was catching up to her. In just a few days, she would be on her way, following her father's footsteps into the larger universe.

"Taiyō has outdone himself, Doctor," Amaya commented to the older man seated at the table with her. "It's beautiful. I can't believe he would do this for me. And I have you to thank as well." Amaya turned to Hank Blazer, and smiled. "Your support has helped me reach this point. I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you."

Pluto: Local Bar

Yeah...His new journey started in a bar on Pluto...A dump by other world standards but here on Pluto it was basically a small slice of heaven...Or hell depending on the cliental at the moment. As it was one such moment that today happened to be one of those hellish moment. In the corner of this ragged establishment sat Leon Selig, former Soldier and now basically a wandering nobody on the streets of Pluto with nothing to do save for repairing things that people pay for and having a quiet beer in the corner of the bar listening to music from the working radio.

A couple of young punks having too much to drink were stirring up trouble near the counter. "Hey!...You listening to me?...The beer here...Ish...Piss!" A drunken punk shouted at the bartender who looked more annoyed than anything. The leader of the gaggle of three idiots were messing up the quiet atmosphere, causing a ruckus, and throwing glasses while refusing to leave. Bloody idiots...

"Hey...How about you three just shut the hell up and get out." Leon raised his voice catching the attention of the three who came stumbling to his table, looking like they were just trouble. "Hey!...Old man...You think you can order us around?...We will kick your...Ash...Punk..." The leader drunkenly laughed as he raised a finger to the mans head.

"Kid, I'm giving you one warning. You three leave or you will be leaving in a medical transport." Leon warned as he glared at three as he reached for his beer before the leader slapped it off the table. "I want to see you---" Before he could even attempt to finish his sentence his chin was met by a cybernetic arm giving him an uppercut sending him off his feet and throwing him back with a few broken teeth. The supposed old man was now standing and ready for a brawl.

The other two punks still standing had conflicting ways of dealing with this, one guy decided to turn around and run for it...Tripping and falling as he ran for the exit. The other punk raised his fists and threw hands in a drunken and slow straight punch, only to be ducked, punched hard in his gut causing the man to lean forward in pair before Leon grabbed his head and slammed it into the wall next to him causing the papers badly tapped on the wall to scatter as the man crumpled to the ground out cold.

Leon sighed as he picked up papers and discovered one strange article...'People looking for volunteers, heard some people on Mercury looking for crew for a fancy ship. Things bad news from what I hear, captain is bad news.' Was that it read. Leon walked over to the counter and returned the papers. "Sorry for the mess." He stated as he walked out and looked for transportation to Mercury.

Mercury: Taiyō Shipyard

Standing with six others, Leon had to keep it on the low when he was leaving Pluto after his little scuffle. However here he was, on the planet of Mercury following the rumor of work on a special ship. Honestly...He did not bring much with him, just the clothes on his back and a handgun on his side, and a large case filled with random knick knacks. As much as he would have loved to bring his old suit of powered armor on him...It was technically Illegal to be lugging around Military hardware...That was unless anyone saw it of course, he had to keep that hidden in plain sight. And by that he had to dismantle it, turn it into other things, and would only be a suit of power armor once he dismantled everything and put it together.

However that was a different issue, it would seem like the rumors he followed was true. He kept to himself as he followed the group. Seems like the captain was seemingly energetic all things considered, although maybe it was the fact of the ship...he had no clue, all he was here for was to work once more. And being able to work out in the void of space doing hard work...That beat being a bum on Pluto.

The sixteen hour shuttle ride had been boring, but not unbearable. The dark shuttle cut off from communication and barely big enough to stretch one's legs in had been uncomfortable, but not unbearable. Having to break down and extract rare parts from her beloved workshop in order to have the tools necessary to maintain her weapon had hurt, but had still not been unbearable. The First Mate of her new home out here among the stars? Unbearable Emilia found herself drawing her conclusion of the man after only a short time with him.

As the shuttle landed, the First Mate uttered something that Emilia refused to believe people really said outside of staged dramas on Earth. "Last one out's a rotten egg." She felt her eye suppress an involuntary twitch, and proceeded to follow the man out. Emilia wasn't terribly imposing, her large coat made her look bigger than she was, but only slightly over average height for a male. Thankfully her helmet obscured her face, and her clothes hid the rest of her body, she was as anonymous here as could be hoped when landing on a high-security planetoid to board one's new assignment. Her modulator barked into action as she approached the guards, "Em Liebe, from Luna."

Following only shortly behind the helmeted figure, was a a young lady on the shorter side. Her dirty blonde hair was pinned up in a neat bun, and her glasses glinted in the light as she nervously introduced herself as, "M-miss Rhorer, reporting for duty. I-i'm so excited to be accepted aboard!" The girl beams a gorgeous smile, though her eyes appear to be fixed on something invisible on the ground

An absurdly lanky blond man, Tyson Monnaie, surged from out of the shuttle, gasping dramatically. "Finally," he managed to say between breaths, "I'm free of this metal cage! Sixteen hours! SIXTEEN HOURS of cramps and paresthesia! I thought I would die before my legs would feel blood flowing through them again! I'm pretty sure I will never feel my right foot's big toe again..."

Managing to move his long legs (severely fake-limping, of course), Tyson got to a place he could sit down. Here, he continued to quietly whine to himself, "Why does every shuttle have to be so small? And always filled to the brim with the most inconsiderate people! Don't they realize a tall handsome gentleman, especially a stupidly rich one at that, naturally needs more space?"

"Yes," Tyson shouted out to no one in particular, but addressing all with clear condemnation, "the man you pressed and squeezed into a corner like a lemon IS, in fact, THE Tyson Monnaie of the Monnaie Riche Corporation, founded by the Monnaie family. Super rich, super handsome, yes, I know, it's an honor for me to be here, as well, I ASSURE you."

And with that terrible speech, he rolled his eyes and began to rub his legs vigorously, muttering about lack of blood, pins and needles, and anything else he could justify complaining about.

Despite being a stranger in yet another strange land, the very familiar sensation of space travel came almost as a comfort to a certain non-human passenger aboard the shuttle, despite the conditions being more cramped than usual. Nierra had relegated herself to simply observing the humans for most of the journey, though she would usually answer anyone who came to her with questions about herself. Packing for the trip hadn't exactly been difficult; the Alkair had already brought all her personal effects with her when she originally came to the Sol system, and even then she always travelled light anyway.

When the craft finally landed, the man who would serve as the crew's First Officer was the first to disembark, accompanied by an expression that made Nierra internally question his ability to serve in such a position of authority. She also made sure not to be the last one off the shuttle to avoid being the subject of ridicule.

With a good chunk of the passengers already in front of her - one of whom seeing fit to bewail his lot in life despite the opportunity that presented itself before him - Nierra patiently waited for her turn to introduce herself to Matias as requested. She gave the security chief a respectful nod, light glinting off the visor of a suit that was clearly of alien design.

"Nierra Ezran, of the Kel-Inir nomad fleet." The Alkair woman spoke softly but with confidence, along with a faint mechanical quality to her voice. "May our voyage be far and our heading be true."

Earth: South Okanagan - 1 Week Prior

Robert let out a deep sigh as he sat down on a rock and wiped the sweat off his brow. Was definitely a hotter day than he had wanted, but this area always seemed pretty warm, except for the wind. Which decided to be absent today. Robert smirked lightly as a voice called out to him.

"Getting tired Mr. Langley?" The words playfully drifted from an attractive girl with blonde hair tied up in a pony tail. She, like Robert, was dressed in athletic clothes for their hike.

"Careful Adelaide, you're starting to sound like a secretary." Robert teased.

"Oh? Do you take all your secretaries out for hikes into the Okanagan mountains?" She said grinning.

"No, just the one's I'm not paying." They both laughed for a moment as the girl sat down with Robert. They rummaged through their backpacks to pull out water bottles and take a deep drink. Robert was enjoying the sight of the lakes and mountains, something that made this place truly one of the most beautiful in the world. He was going to wax a little poetically, but soon felt an elbow gently nudge his rib. Robert looked to Adelaide, who was pointing to the city's airport down below them. There was a gleaming, silver ship that was landing, and after a moment of watching, Robert recognized the distinctive logo of Langley Industries.

"That's for you I take it?" Adelaide asked a little disappointed.

Robert sighed, smirking a little. "Yeah, looks like we'll have to continue this another time." He pulled out his phone and made a quick call for a ship to pick him up and take him and Adelaide back to the city, quicker than hiking.

Mercury: Taiyō Shipyard - Present

The 16 hour long shuttle flight had been mostly uneventful for Robert. He kept quite throughout by keeping headphones on and listening to music, as well as pretending to sleep at times. No offense was intended by this, Robert simply wanted to enjoy his music on the long flight, and allow his mind to drift to other places beyond the confines of the small ship.

Once they had reached their destination, everyone hurriedly exited the shuttle, some possibly due to the remarks of the man who identified himself as the First Mate. Robert was more worried about his stuff than anything else however, so in trying to ensure he had everything together, he ended up being the last person to step off. Following the group, they all began to introduce themselves to the Blackbird's head of security.

He put his hand up and gave a little two finger wave. "Robert Langley, from Earth. Pleasure to be aboard." A soft smile rested on his face as he finished introducing himself.

"Welcome everyone, my name is Matias Kingsbury. I am head of security for Captain Amaya Rose and the Blackbird's Cry," Matias said, bowing slightly. "If you will follow me, I will show you to the ship. Captain Rose will be addressing us with a short speech, and confirming your designated stations aboard the Cry."

Matias led the group down the corridors, into a large glass foyer that showed the night sky above Mercury spread out above them. The foyer itself was full of people, bustling about, mostly ignoring the view, but to the newcomers, it was a breathtaking sight. The shipyards branched out like a tree, the glittering lights highlighting the skeletons of ships being built, strange spirits among the stars. But what really caught everyone's eye was the completed Blackbird's Cry, hanging just out the port window.

It was their first real glimpse of the ship, and as Eco put it, "Well now... that's a ship." The Blackbird's Cry was shaped like an arrowhead, the fore of the ship coming to a softened point underneath gleaming silver armor. Lights flickered on in the bridge, but the eyes were drawn to the massive engines on either side of the sleek wings. Glowing blue flame was just beginning to ignite deep within the engines' hearts.

"This way, officers," Matias reminded the group gently, leading them into an elevator that shot up into the shipyard itself. After a few moments, the elevator opened and once again the Cry was visible, this time much closer as they marched down another corridor that would lead them into the Cry herself.

Matias showed no hesitation as he reached the door and opened it with a quick press of his hand, and he continued to lead the group into the ship itself. The room they entered was a conference room, white walls for neutrality, with a desk and chairs that looked like they could be removed easily if need be.

"Please, have a seat," the woman standing inside said, and it didn't take much for the crew to recognize their captain: Amaya Rose. Dark blue eyes met each of the faces of her new crew, and Amaya stood still, straight as an arrow, as the group found their seats.

"Welcome aboard the Blackbird's Cry," Amaya said, her voice calm and rich, carrying to everyone in the room with ease. "I know many of you must be nervous, or excited, or even apprehensive. Perhaps you have heard of my record. Perhaps you do not feel qualified to be here."

Amaya paused and scanned the group, then continued. "As you all know, my name is Amaya Rose. Please address me as Captain at all times. Your first mate will be Astraeus Economos, although he prefers to be addressed as Eco. During our voyage, you may come to either one of us with any concerns or questions. I want to reassure all of you that you were chosen for this expedition for a reason. Your skills, your backgrounds, and your potential were all weighed into my final decision."

"The Blackbird's Cry is the most advanced starship currently built," Amaya said, pressing a flat button on the table that brought up a schematic of the Cry. "It's large but the rest of the crew is already on board and has been for about a week. They can help you if you get lost, but I hope you've also read over the debriefing. For those of you who may not have, our current mission is to head to Alpha Centauri. As humanity's first outpost, there is a certain import in arriving there."

Amaya pressed the button again and the schematic began highlighting certain areas as she spoke. "Let me quickly go over everyone's assignments.

"Lilian, you will be our main navigator. I will expect you up on the bridge tomorrow morning, but do note that once underway, you have another station at your disposal on deck two, bridge three.

"Tyson, you are the ship's doctor. Tomorrow morning, please report to the medical wing on deck two.

"M, you are our tech officer, and will report to the tech wing. You will work closely with our science officer, so please get to know him when you arrive, or if you happen to meet beforehand.

"Robert, you will be in charge of weapons maintenance. Please report to maintenance on deck four tomorrow morning.

"Nierra, it's good to see you again, and thank you again for coming. I've decided to put you down in the engineering wing of maintenance. You'll be working closely with Robert and our other maintenance officer, Draka.

"You have all met Matias, of course. Matias will be our security officer on board. If there's been a crime committed on board, please report it to him immediately. His office is located on deck three, along with crew quarters.

"Leon, I understand you're quite gifted in the culinary arts. I've asked you to report to the kitchen tomorrow morning to meet the rest of your staff. We'll all be counting on you to keep us healthy."

Amaya stopped and looked around at the group one last time, then smiled. "We have a great crew, and I am greatly looking forward to working with you all. Does anyone have any questions now, before we adjourn?"

"Yes," Tyson stepped forward with a morbid expression on his face. "I have a question that has actually been on my mind for quite some time now..."

He paused as if searching for the right words, then rapidly let out an energetic speech, "What is your policy on relationships during this voyage? Especially within stations, but not exclusively. And perhaps if you could specifically mention casual relationships between boss and subordinate, that would be much appreciated. Which reminds me of another thing I have been wondering about, and that is downtime, or personal time, or whatever you want to call it. How much do we get? Can I have weekends off? Or will it be just a nap every once in a while? Speaking for myself, I enjoy virtual reality games quite a bit. Do we have one here for public use or can I access it privately? Another thing I quite enjoy that concerns me is my speeder bike. It's quite nice, it can work in any atmosphere and even in space, which is quite fun, let me tell you. Extremely expensive, not even most of the upper-class can afford it. The problem is, when I sent in my list of the baggage I would be bringing and the supplies I would be needing, they omitted several things. My speeder bike was just one of several. I don't know if you have time now to go over them all, but I think we should discuss these things before we get going on this grand adventure. It's so exciting but, well, my speeder isn't going to get on this ship by itself, now is it?"

At this point, Tyson let out a few awkward laughs before looking expectantly at Amaya.

Leon made sure to keep mental note in his head as they went through the ship, the design, part of the layout, craw on board and their status. Of course he would have plenty of time later to orientate himself to the entire ship, weapon systems, combat doctrines, layout and design. For now however they were meeting with the ship’s captain. Captain Amaya Rose...He had no clue what to think of her at the moment save for the rumors surrounding her as being the lone survivor of multiple expeditions.

However she would confirm about her record, and soon began to assign tasks to each of the people gathered here:

Lilian, assigned as their Main Navigator, as such that gave away that she was no doubt skilled in her profession. She at least looked the type that seemed to be the more studious type.

Tyson, the ships doctor. Deck two was the medical wing this he would remember in the event that injuries are sustained. Of course his following question opened up some of his personality, relationships...Looks like he can expect the doctor to be the type to sometimes hope for relationships better than...’professional’...Of course if he is their doctor he must know what to do when it comes to an emergency.

M...The Tech Officer And someone who was hiding their face. Unisex outfit, could be man or woman...Hell they could be human or some foreign alien type...Honestly he could care less about the gender, people have their own way of acting in public. But for now he can say that this M was going to the research and development department at least do scientific work.

Robert, he looked young but he looked healthy. And with him on weapon maintenance he assumed he was adept at keeping equipment in working orders this was good to note as well.

Nierra...Part Of engineering which kept the ship running. Although for some reason he could not put his finger on it...She seemed a bit off...But like hell he knew she was wearing a void suit so he could not tell...At least he could count of her to keep the ship in operation.

And finally himself, Culinary?...He laughed internally to himself, never expected to be put in the kitchen, he had assumed she would put him in the generic security given his background, or part of maintenance but of course he knew that a ship can’t run if everyone is starving to death. He gave a nod and salute. “Of course captain I will report to culinary duty at 1400 sharp to begin prep work, however since your asking questions I will be blunt here. I heard the rumors over your previous expeditions. Some called you a bad luck magnet. I want to make one thing clear which will be my question. Did your crew die for you? Or did you abandon your crew? That is my only question.” He spoke clear as day. A captain who simply abandons their crew is no captain in his book, if she did he might as well leave this metal bucket. In the battlefield it was one thing to fight, but to die while knowing you would be sent to die by someone who wanted to save his own skin...That he would not stand by.

"Personal relationships are not prohibited as long as they are consensual," Amaya said to Tyson. "Keep that in mind, Doctor. As far as time off, you will be expected to be at your station for as long as needed to complete your duties - in your case, I hope that you are able to spend a long time taking naps aboard this ship. When your duties are done, there is the recreation area on deck two, and the crew quarters on deck three that you may spend your free time in. But I'm afraid that your speeder will not be allowed."

At Leon's question, Amaya took a deep breath and closed her eyes. A long moment passed, and then Amaya slowly let out her breath, and opened her eyes again.

"I would never abandon my crew," Amaya said, emphasizing the words. "I... am not ready to talk about what happened on that voyage. But I still need you to trust me. Can you do that, Mr. Selig?"

Leon listened to her words, he simply nodded. “I see captain. I will not press this issue any further, however if you say you do not abandon your crewman then I shall trust your words. Actions speak louder then words, so I’ll see when we get into those situations. But for now...” He put his heels together and saluted. “Leon Selig at your service Captain! I will orientate myself with the ship. Apologies for my question as well.” He stated as he put his arm down and began to walk away, his question was indeed satisfied for the time being, as such he wanted to get up to speed with the ship as soon as possible.

An interesting ship so far, quite beautiful and unique as far as they go. The crew too was quite interesting, and Robert found himself feeling curious what it will be like to work with them all. His first impressions of the captain were mostly good, though some of the questions made him a little uneasy, particularly with his concerns on her reputation.

Once Leon finished his question, Robert raised his hand and gave a slight wave of it. "I feel as though some of my questions should be had more privately with you Captain, but for now I'd just like to quickly ask about the equipment that was provided by Langley Industries, and the agreement that was worked out. Understandable you don't want staff walking around with firearms and weapons at all times, but will I be permitted to work on them, test them, and perhaps make use of them in the field? You'll have to forgive my uncertainty, I only briefly read the agreement, and my mind is mostly on the concerns of my fami- ah, the company's interests. Being able to test and use the equipment in real world situations is vital to better understanding how we can improve their effectiveness, and work out any flaws."

His cheeks felt a little hot, the feeling of embarrassment having not fully left him from asking the question. "My apologies for the long worded question." Robert spoke in a friendly, but slightly bashful tone.

"That's fine, Mr. Langley, it's a valid concern," Amaya said, nodding to the newly minted weapons officer. "Matias here will be keeping an eye on the weapons your company has volunteered, and you'll be able to work on them as often as your duties and his allow. There is a small firearms range in the ship on deck two, but I'm sure some of your weapons will be inappropriate to test onboard a starship." Amaya smiled. "To that end, we will have frequent stops I'm sure, and I'm not one to keep my officers cooped up. You'll have ample opportunity to test your weapons, I'm sure."

Amaya looked around the room. "Any other questions I can provide answers to?"

The helmeted figure, M, simply nods quietly as Amaya addresses the crew. She absently listens to the rest of the positions being assigned, taking in what she may, perhaps it would be useful later. However for now it was extraneous information to be filed away for a later date, the moment Captain Rose stopped talking and dismissed everyone to their stations, M started away. The Blackbird's Cry was a large craft, and Emilia wished to be acquainted with most of it before the end of the day, and so she began her almost aimless wander.

The other Luna native wasn't so easily dismissed, her mind awash with questions and implications of what this position might mean for her going forward. Alpha Centauri was often a dream for most Luna natives to visit one day, even if just to see the scientific disparity between cultures.

After some initial questions were asked by two very different gentlemen, Lilian decided to voice her thoughts in a low monotone, "Perhaps I missed it in the debriefing, but what exactly are we doing in Alpha Centauri? As it is a Triple Star System, depending on the orbits of the three stars in the system and our reasons for being there, our ideal approach could vary drastically. It would hardly be fitting for the maiden voyage of The Blackbird's Cry to end with us smashing to bits against Centauri AB's circumstellar disc." She pauses for a moment to look at the people still gathered around her, as if only now remembering something, "Though, perhaps this would be best discussed tomorrow morning?"

Amaya coughed into her hand, hiding a smile at Lilian's inquiry. The new navigator seemed to lack in confidence what she made up for in ability, but Amaya hoped that she would grow more comfortable with her post over time.

"Many of our first star systems will have plotted routes already," Amaya said gently. "Tomorrow morning, you can look over the routes programmed for Alpha Centauri and decide which one would be best. Glancing over them all might help you in creating routes in the future, but don't feel obligated to know everything on your first day."

Robert nodded and smiled, satisfied thus far with the Captain's responses. "Well I believe any pertinent questions seem to have been answered for me at this time. If you'll excuse me, I'd like to get acquainted with my station, and equipment." Robert took a quick look over to the robot that had introduced itself, not something he was immediately trusting of, but then again he wasn't really suspecting Henry Blazer was interested in developing weapons.

"Hey uhh... Mark. Yeah, Mark-IX, I've got some stuff you might be able to help me with tomorrow morning if you've got a little time." Before taking his leave Robert gave a salute to the Captain, followed by a nod to Matias, and then the rest of his fellow crew mates. "Captain. Matias. Ladies and gentlemen. If anyone needs me, I should be on the fourth deck." With that, Robert took his leave and headed towards the fourth floor.

Though obviously still anxious, Lilian simply smiled and nodded her acquiescence, Captain Rose was correct after all. The thought of poring over the already established routes through the foreign system sounded interesting enough to keep the Navigator from any notion of sleep. The shuttle ride had been long, but any sign of weariness were completely absent from Lilian for the moment. "Understood, no further questions; I'll report to the bridge in the morning."

Having been dismissed, she decided to find her room, making her way to the crew's quarters so that she might start unpacking. This was to be home, after all, for the foreseeable future. I might as well make myself comfortable... Lilian's thoughts drifted to the rest of the crew, who all seemed interesting enough, with the exception of Tyson who seemed like he would immediately grate on her patience.

Emilia had found the tech wing almost immediately, and as such was acquainting herself with the rest of the ship, somewhere on the first floor. The various other crew-members answered any of her questions about where she was going, and what to expect there. Before long she had a tertiary map of the ship, crew members and their various positions, and the like. A couple other Luna natives recognized her helmet, giving her a wide berth, otherwise she roamed the halls mostly unnoticed.

She was tired, the trip here had been a pain and the crew-mates she met so far were mostly unremarkable. However she wouldn't head to the crew quarters for some time yet still; she needed time to clear her head, unwind, and think of how she was going to handle her fellow science officer. Almost certainly their proximity would compromise Emilia's identity, though, perhaps that was fine among peers on The Blackbird's Cry...

As the officers filtered out, Amaya Rose breathed a hidden sigh of relief. It appeared that although perhaps not perfect in their trust for her, the other crew members were excited or happy enough to be here to overlook the troublesome rumors that followed her... at least, for now.

Returning to her quarters, Amaya spent the night planning her speech for the next day. The crew would disembark for a few hours at Pluto for the traditional drink and meal, then head on the journey to Alpha Centauri. Alpha Centuari's system was 4.367 years away at the speed of light, but the trip would take them roughly 4.5 days. Most ships weren't capable of that speed, but the Blackbird's Cry could probably go even faster.

The next morning, Amaya was on the bridge, dressed and sounding the general alarm to ensure everyone was at their stations.

"Eco, give the order," Amaya said, settling into the bridge's chair and listening to the hissing of the dock as it prepared to release her ship from its hold.

"Final call, release dock clamps now," Eco said, and with a clunk, the shipyards did so. "Confirm, dock clamps are released."

"Confirmed, sir," came the reply from the communications officer, a young woman by the name of Fiora.

"Derek, take us out," Amaya said to their pilot. "Just like we rehearsed."

"Yes maam," Derek said, wiping his brow for a moment and nodding to his copilot. "Just like we rehearsed, Mel."

Together, Melanie and Derek guided the ship away from the shipyards, and Amaya smiled as a cheer rose up from Eco that resounded around the bridge.

"Igniting main engines," Derek said, and the hum of the engines filled the room, a comforting thrum that would become a staple for the crew on their long journey to the unknown. "Utilizing plotted course to Pluto."

The ship moved forward and Amaya nodded to the smooth transition, satisfied so far with the ship's performance. She pressed a button on her chair, opening comms for the rest of the ship.

"Congratulations, crew," Amaya said, the smile still on her lips. "We are underway to Pluto. Please feel free to bid farewell to any colonies you call home as we pass them, and if your duties permit, you are allowed to spend the time off-duty. Thank you, that is all."

"Can't wait to reach Pluto," Eco said, stretching. "Been too long since I had a good drink."

Pluto, I never imagined I'd go that far out in the system, let alone leave it. Lilian's mind raced as she watched the charted course to the planetoid at the far end of the Sol system. The hologram display was very similar to the ones back at the Luna Labs, only more realistic than could ever hoped to be achieved back home; hundreds or maybe thousands of tiny projectors rendered the route and any potential hazards along the way.

The mapping of hazards however was hopelessly advanced, perhaps even incorporated from foreign technology, the array of sensors seemed to give constant readings with less than a millisecond of lag, in a surprisingly large distance around the ship; probably to provide time for human error in reacting. It was a little hard for Lilian to get used to the idea that this would be her new career path, a navigator aboard the most advanced ship in the Galaxy, with Captain Rose who infamously already sunk three other Starships.

"Reporting for duty Captain Rose. I assume since we are still in the system, my navigation skills won't necessarily be needed today." Clearing her throat, the Navigation Officer continued, "Regardless I would still like time to work with the equipment for my own sake, if you do not mind."

Emilia sat impatiently in the Tech Wing, having slept very little and arrived very early. Helmet still on and wearing several layers of clothing under a buttoned lab-coat along with elbow-length black leather gloves. The lab was quite sufficient for her needs, though she brought along several things that no one not native to Luna ever seemed to have in their labs. Such things included Pyroxene, Ilmenite, and Olivine; along with her favorite Self-Seeding Free-Electron Laser Apparatus, or 'Sfecla' as she liked to call it. It was a complicated device involving a diamond Monochromator, and was also one of her revolutionary concepts that the Luna Military demanded the rights to, of course she said no; perhaps that is part of the reason why she is on this self-imposed exile.

A few other devices had came along to upkeep her suit, however none of this was on her mind currently, most things lay in her bags on the floor forgotten. Her mind was occupied with her fellow Science Officer, and what they would think of working with a weirdo who refused to take her helmet off, or if they would slow her down in her research. Flustered and impatient, she drummed her gloved fingers on a nearby counter. With a sigh, she asks herself in a low frustrated growl, "Where the HELL are you!?"

Robert smiled to himself as the Captain announced their departure from Mercury, pleased he'd be able to give Earth one final wave farewell as they go past. He'd been listening to a little jazz as he worked on a damaged assault rifle. Listening to music helped him focus on his work, but also just kept him entertained, and this song definitely did. "Accentuate the Positive" by Bing Crosby. Robert would probably switch to a little classic rock later though, depending on his mood, which right now was quite pleased. He took a few sips of coffee he had sitting on the table, replacing a scorched barrel from the rifle he was fixing (somehow one of the round blew up in the chamber, made quite a mess too).

This was all a strange experience for Robert. The son of wealthy industrialists, on a state of the art ship, captained by a woman who'd lost no less than three ships in her past, flying to Pluto, and soon to Alpha Centauri. All this, and Robert had never even been off Earth. One might think him a bit sheltered, but he more than knew his way around mechanical things, weapons, business, all that kind of stuff. And what little he had explored of space, he had more than made up for in his explorations on Earth, all the hidden and forgotten nooks and crannies of the beautiful blue planet. He'd miss it, but he was looking forward to what he would be able to explore next.

There was a satisfying clicking sound as Robert pulled the trigger of the rifle, a new barrel in, and an improved chamber for the rounds. Should work pretty smoothly now. "Well, that's one task done for today." He said with a smile, taking another sip of his coffee and scratching off some notes on a piece of paper he had beside him. "Guess I'll go say hi to the rest of the team." He smiled as he rolled down his sleeves, grabbed his light grey jacket and pulled it on over his white collar shirt. Wasn't really necessary, but it felt comfy, and the 'Langley Industries' logo over his left breast was a pleasant reminder of home. Robert left to go find his fellow engineering officers shortly after.

As Nierra had left her station, Draka had appeared, as if from nowhere, around the corner. He stopped suddenly, appearing to have reached some destination more quickly than he had expected. Giving a slight wave, his fingers on his left hand began to speedily flutter away, clicking some kind of device he was holding. A few seconds later, a strange, monotone, robotic voice emanated from his helmet. "Greetings, you must be Nierra, pleasure to meet you. I'm Draka, the Captain may have told you I work here in engineering." His hands began clicking away again. "I decided it would be a good idea to get familiar with some of the new crew, yourself and Mr. Robert Langley."

As if on cue, Robert found himself walking down the same hall as both Nierra and Draka, a slight look of surprise on his face, followed by a little grin. "We all have the same idea?" He asked in a friendly tone, walking up to Draka and extending his hand. "Robert Langley, and you are?"

"Draka. Pleased to meet you Robert. You're quite young for a weapons maintenance officer."

Robert smiled and nodded his head from side to side. "Yes, but luckily very experienced thanks to my family. Pleased to meet you as well Draka. And Nierra, good to see you again as well, apologies we didn't get more introduced yesterday, but I suppose everyone was pretty tired, and I for one certainly wanted to get familiar with my station." He gave yet another friendly smile.
