Date: June 12th. (Although with the large amount of time that has past and peoples' terrible recollection, everyone just considers it the start of a warm summer.)
Time: Early afternoon.
Climate: Dark clouds make up the sky above. Rain pours lightly from them, creating a subtle mist of precipitation. Fog is present here and there. Still, everything is visible and clear.
Temperature: Humid, but with the showers spilling from above, a slight chill is starting to set in...

Despite how much resourceful intelligence the people of the Drexley Safe-Zone possessed and used to keep their people safe, the fact of the matter remained that they still had a bit of a security issue. Ironically, the only girl who was not a permanent member of the secluded village seemed to know this problem better than anyone else. After all, she used it to her advantage every single day.

Ask the middle-aged guards on patrol to leave the area, and they would deny you - possibly shoot you if you started to run past them. But slip through the chink in the wall just a half a mile west from the gates, and you could escape into the forest undetected.

With a grey hood over her head and a silver pocket knife that twirled in her hand, (just in case she needed it), the girl retreated into the glistening vegetation, impartial to the rain. Every year, the grass and trees grew a little bit greener. Perhaps it was Illi's imagination. However, it also made sense that due to less pollution and absolutely no fossil fuel emissions that had been so prevalent in the ancient past, the environment was starting to make a comeback.

Finding a barren tree stump nearby, the young woman sat down upon it and started to contemplate everything that was going on. She sighed. There was no reason for her to be satisfied with her current situation. Next to no one believed her claim, and those who did were not willing to leave behind the makeshift lives they had established in Drexley. But how were they real lives? They were existences spent in constant fear. It was only in the death of their tedious lifestyles that they could create better ones for future generations. But of course, nobody saw that side of the story. All they saw were the threats that lived outside the walls, and the feelings of comfort that would be sacrificed if the journey to New York took place.

Silently frustrated, Illi put her forehead in her palms and washed the rainwater across her face. With her current situation, this storm almost felt like a baptism. A chance to start anew. Maybe she would have to journey to New York herself. It was a long, dangerous journey, yes, but she had already come this far from Chicago. Still, that was a lifelong quest, and she had attained lots of help along the way. All of those people were dead now, and they had not passed along their skills to her...only dreadful memories she did not want to remember.

It was hard being different, and it would be even harder if help did not show up soon...

He'd lost count of the days he'd been alone, in this forbidden hell-hole, those ravaging beasts were still infecting places heavily, and he wondered how much of humanity was actually left. He winced as he started cutting through the thickness of grass in a fairly wooded area he was trying to pass through.

It was definitely summer time, as the mosquitoes poked and prodded at him, and he constantly swatted at his bare, muscular arms. In his current situation, he was alone, and if he wanted to survive for much longer, he probably needed to find one of those camps he'd only heard about.

Nilan had tried to find one of these camps once, but by the time he actually found it, those things were all over it, screaming and blood was everywhere, and the sound of those rotten teeth sinking into pure human flesh. Just thinking about it sent a shiver down his spine. Nilan looked up after cutting some more grass, and to his eyes he found a haven, somewhere to rest for a few days. Finally.

He approached it slowly, and men with guns looking him over. "Have you been bit?" They snarled, inspecting every inch of him for any possible sign of anything. Nilan shook his head. "I struck them in the head before they got that close." He chuckled to himself, and ran a hand through his sweaty, oily hair. The guards hesitantly let him inside the gates, which creaked loudly, and informed a nearby herd of their whereabouts. It wasn't one minute before Nilan was being chased, and he got far enough away to see that the gate was having trouble closing, and he braved the fear pulsing his veins, and took his knife, stabbing as many skulls as he could, and the gate was still struggling.

"Can I get some help over here? Surely, not all of you are such cowards!" He grumbled, and sneered as he dodged a massive bite.

The sound of a groan broke the deafening silence. Illi knew all too well what that meant.

Like a fox, her head rose in alert. Her chocolate eyes gazed left, then right, then left again. Nothing but leaves, raindrops and trees caught her vision.

Then she heard another noise. Something of a snarl. Perhaps it was a twig snapping in two? Whatever it was, it was all too close for her comfort. So instinctively, Illi grabbed on to a tree branch, and with careful precision, began to climb. Scaling trees was a skill she had learned in childhood, and had only expanded upon as she grew into a young woman. It was a useful talent to have. Perhaps during her parents' time, it was considered an oddity, but now, it was an ability that ensured survival.

The girl gazed down at the forest floor below, and kept quiet as she watched the dead pass through the greenery. There were two of them, and then three, and then six. More than ten. Her heart beated like a hammer on a board. Especially when she saw a muscular man run through the vegetation, trying to distance himself from their pursuit. Her brows furrowed. The way he looked placid, perhaps he didn't even know he was being pursued...

After carefully sliding down the oak that had provided her a temporary safe-zone, Illi, began to run back to the campsite. She knew the way to Drexley like she knew the back of her hand. Her raven hair wildly flowing behind her, she hoped she could make it to the man before the dead claimed him as their afternoon lunch.

Yes, he was close by now. She could hear him yell. "Can I get some help over here? Surely, not all of you are such cowards!" he grunted. There was a horde all around him. Fortunately, there was also a knife in Illi's pocket.

With a roar, she lunged forward, stabbing the one closest to her, burying her sharp blade into the zombie's brain. Every man, (even the man who's hide she was saving), knew that the head was their weak spot - their kryptonite, per say. Of course, the idiots by the gate recklessly shooting bullets at the beasts didn't quite know that. Illi clenched her teeth and snarled at them. If only she had a gun, she'd probably do the job better than them despite the fact that she had only pulled a trigger three times in her life.

She jotted her knife into another skull. And then another. "Close the gate!" she bellowed to the guards. She feared that if they stayed open for two long, the godforsaken town of Drexley would be even more godforsaken.

And then out of nowhere, she felt a searing pain in her kneecap. She winced and gave a short cry, grunting as she fell on her backside onto the dirt below. She could feel the bullet still buried in her skin, as well as the blood oozing from her veins. Of course, shoot the crazy girl, she thought. Shoot her and be done with it all...

Trying her best to ignore the scorching torture, she used her elbows to crawl, and picked up the dull knife that had fallen from her grasp. Just then, a rotting corpse came lunging for her. Grimacing, she leaned back and swiped at its knees, then its stomach. The body fell on top of her, its insides pouring all over her hoodie. Her knee burned in more pain due to the pressure, and she tried to hold in tears of pain.

"Shit, shit, shit!!" she kept crying, trying to pull the dead body off of her as well as awaiting the next zombie to plunge at her vulnerable skin.

"Ah.. fuck!" He groaned as he saw the girl who had been thrown to the ground by a bullet just as quickly as she appeared. "Open the fucking gate!" He cursed, and as soon as it opened, he bee-lined to the victim, stabbing skulls on his way. The crunch of the bone still startled him, and made him uneasy, but he wouldn't feel that way for long.

"Get up!" He said quickly, after pushing the dead off of her, and extending one hand, as the other stabbed skulls. "I don't know what those two dumbos are thinking, but that gate isn't staying open for long." He huffed, and started ushering her inside, stabbing as many undead as he could before they could take a bite of his living flesh.

"Are you alright? No bites?" He started to scan over the stranger, as the men at the front were fighting off the last of the random herd, and he nodded. "I'm Nilan by the way. You're welcome." He cracked an uncanny smile, wiping a line of sweat off of his forehead.
