For the majority of Harley's life, it was okay. Doreen and Khari Pimou were strict, mean parents to their daughters and raised them in New York City. Khari was physically and verbally abusive and Doreen was emotionally and mentally abusive. Because of this, Jaylene and Harley got along very well, despite the age difference. Jaylene was rebellious and cool and Harley always looked up to this and acted similar in the sense that she'd act rebelliously. She'd steal chocolate bars, sneak out in the middle of the night with Jaylene and swear in front of adults. Her parents quickly stopped this behavior when Harley was being loud about it, so she was forced to calm down. Jaylene taught her about the corrupt government, veganism, art and the beautiful things in the life of a teenaged hippie, despite their parents opposite views and this changed Harley's views on most things. Her parents wanted her to be a lawyer, while she wanted to be an artist. Jaylene encouraged Harley's free behavior and taught her individualism, which made Harley a better person. It also encouraged Harley to get into singing and art.
All women descending from Harley's father's side of the family always seem to look much older than they're real age. This simple fact is apart of the reason why Harley and her family have suffered so. When Harley was twelve years old, her beloved older sister disappeared one day after sneaking out with an older man. Only Harley knows that Jaylene was sneaking out with a man that she seduced with her mature looks a few months before the girl was to graduate high school. The thing that bothers Harley to this day is that Jaylene was never able to be truly free like she always because she never got the chance to live without strict parental supervision, which she hated having. She was so close to being free to go to college, university or just do whatever she wanted and she never got the chance. Harley kept the true reason behind Jaylene's disappearance a secret so she didn't seem like a stupid teenager that got herself kidnapped and simply went with the story that a man came inside their house, threatened to take Harley but Jaylene protected her and was taken instead. Harley did this so Jaylene looked like a hero.
After her sister disappeared, her parents started fighting all the time and even resorted to staying in separate rooms. All the stress of everything happening caused Harley to hate herself and her body and she began starving herself and distancing herself from everyone. She was always a pretty chubby kid and was insecure for a long time about it but never did anything about it until after her sister died. Her parents were so broken that they didn't even notice that she wasn't eating anymore. A few months later, Doreen and Khari split up and he went back to Africa with his family back there, keeping in contact with his daughter over the internet and phone calls. For a year and a half, Doreen and Harley were struggling until Doreen fell in love with a millionaire business man named Jason Ashworth, on a business trip. They both recently lost a spouse and found comfort in each other, so they immediately got married and Jason moved Doreen and Harley into their mansion in Los Angeles as soon as they got back from their honeymoon. Harley hated her new life and her new family, but appreciated that her mother wasn't unhappy anymore.
It was hard going to the same school as her mean step-sisters. They didn't care who picked on her and often were the reason why others to pick on her, despite being so much older. They hated her because her mother replaced their recently deceased mother, so took it out on the less intimidating of the two. However, Harley managed to find love in a girl named Jane, whom she dated for a year. Her relationship with Jane was severed after her family had to move to Canada because of business. They tried to keep a relationship going, but Jane found it difficult to maintain a relationship where they wouldn't see each other unless it was the holiday and did find another girl she was interested in. Though sad, Harley understood and split up with Jane. After this, Harley got a burst of confidence with her artistic abilities and began posting her art on a site called DeviantArt and got recognized quickly. People asked her for commissions, so she began making a job out of her art and decided she really wanted to pursue art after high school. She also decided in a quick moment to go vegan (remembering what Jaylene stood for helped her as well) and her life is starting to turn up for the better, except that she now doesn't put as much effort into her grades and angers all three of her parents.
