FULL NAME
      Eugen Izaak Gaertner

NICKNAME(S)
Because some people find 'Eugen' odd to pronounce, he often finds himself being called 'Eugene' instead. He doesn't mind it all that much despite it not sounding anything like his actual name, but he doesn't want to spend time correcting people.

AGE
      17

GENDER
      Male

ROLE
      The Newbie

NATIONALITY
      German

I don't have much going on expression wise and people can't tell when I'm joking.

HEIGHT
      5'8"

WEIGHT
      131lbs

HAIR COLOR
      Black

EYE COLOR
      Blue/Green

SKIN TONE
      Fair

GENERAL APPEARANCE
Compared to most people Eugen would be considered moderately tall, but standing at 5'8" he's the shortest person in his family. He doesn't have as much weight on him as he probably should, and for a 17 year old it's noticeable that he's quite skinny. His eyes can't decide which colour they are and sometimes they look blue while other times they look green, but most time they appear to be a pleasant mix of both.

Despite getting into fights practically daily when he was younger, Eugen got through childhood with only a small amount of scars. There's a few on his arms, a couple on his hands. He has a big one on his left knee from being swung down into gravel, and there's another one below it from the same incident.

I used to be a little shit but now I think I'm turning out alright.

Personality
✧ Disciplined ✧ Intelligent ✧ Solitary ✧ Envious ✧

To both strangers and friends, Eugen will often come across cold and unwelcoming. His smiles are rare, his laughs are unheard of, and half the time he appears to not be paying attention. One could kindly label him as a reserved type of person, though a dozen others would argue that Eugen is simply rude. In a way, both perceptions of him would be right.

Eugen doesn't open up to people easily and is prone to failing at his attempts to make friends. He's not shy by a long shot, he's just... bad at being social, unfortunately. He's selective as to who he talks to and even more selective as to who he really communicates with, and while those two may sound similar, they're not. Talking for Eugen is making chitchat in the hallway or halfheartedly asking how someone's day was, or giving a disinterested comment about the weather. Communicating is what normal people would call a regular conversation. Though, it seems that even around friends Eugen sticks to idle chatting.

However, when Eugen opens up he may as well be a completely different person. His laughs are loud and boisterous, his smiles are often and aren't met with gasps of surprise. He doesn't monitor himself as much as he usually does, and he likes to make jokes and poke fun at people. Overall Eugen becomes the opposite of the person he typically is. He greatly prefers this side of himself above anything, but because of the difficulty he has in social situations it's hardly ever seen.

More often than what's healthy Eugen will criticize himself for his behaviour, even if it's over the smallest of things. He compares himself to other, more outgoing people, and he'll chastise himself for not being more like them. He hates the fact that he's built such high walls around himself, but every time he becomes aware of his stand-offish behaviour he has a habit of distancing himself further. He doesn't like to shut things out, but to Eugen it's better than risking saying or doing the wrong thing.

Compared to what other people have going on, my powers are like a three dollar street performance that you didn't want to pay for in the first place.

Power
      Magnetism Manipulation

Eugen's power is all magnets and metals, even the non-ferrous ones. He can throw 'em, he can sense 'em, and sometimes they even stick to him. His power allows him to generate, control and manipulate magnetism in nearly all it's forms, and he can affect any matter that is magnetic.

With his magnetism manipulation, Eugen can do a handful of things that people without it quite obviously can't. For one, he can generate magnetic fields, and through them he can indirectly control anything that is affected/connected by/to them. He could create magnetic force fields with this as well, but the only kind that he makes is ineffective against non-magnetic projectiles, which makes it pretty useless.

Attack/battle wise, Eugen falls a bit short. Sure, he can whip metal around and sometimes throw it to the proper target, but out of all the things he's learned how to do, he's only good at a couple of them. The only thing he's really skilled at is creating and launching spheres of magnetic energy at people, and even then it's just spheres, not even beams. On a smaller scale, Eugen can create magnetic bombs. However, he can't make large enough explosions to actually blow anything up, but the sound they make is rather awful on their own.

Limitations to his powers are that, sometimes, they're unreliable. If the whatever he's trying to control is too far away, if the temperatures get too high, or if the mass is too big, Eugen will lose control over it. This is especially annoying to him because whenever it happens, he's reminded that his skill isn't high enough yet.

I actually have no real productive hobbies.

LIKES
Outer space|| It's impossible for him to not be interested in everything that's beyond Earth. When Eugen was younger, he had planned to become an astronaut. Obviously things took a different turn.
Nature|| While he isn't fond of going on walks or actually experiencing it, he doesn't mind viewing lush trees or blooming flowers from behind windows or through pictures.
Travelling|| Eugen has picked up a need for always having to be on the move. He hates staying in one place for too long, and if he does he feels like he's being cooped up.
Music|| Despite claiming that his earphones are a way to get people to not approach him, he does have actual music playing. Sometimes he even hums along.
Laughter|| Laughing is something that happens to him only rarely, but Eugen loves the feeling he gets in his chest when he does.

DISLIKES
Competitions|| Whenever Eugen has to compete in something, he always feels like he's going to lose.
Planes|| Just the thought of being thousands of feet up in the air makes Eugen nauseous.
Outdoor walks|| First-hand appreciating the environment isn't one of his concerns.
His personality|| Even he can see that he needs to work on his people skills to get them into shape again.
Fighting|| A long-time fan of this, Eugen has only recently begun to dislike the act. He doesn't mind fighting, but randomly looking for things to punch isn't one of his interests anymore.

STRENGTHS
Tolerance|| Eugen has become admittedly good at shutting his mouth and allowing himself to accept different opinions
Considerate|| Though Eugen doesn't mind causing inconvenience, he doesn't like to be purposely hurtful.
Serious|| While others may be joking around and slacking, Eugen likes to work and get things done.

WEAKNESSES
Pride|| If he gets himself into a mess, Eugen won't ask for help out of his own pride and stubbornness. If it's his own doing he won't look for a helping hand, and instead he'll try to push through it and fix things on his own.
His social skills|| With most people Eugen tends to make situations uncomfortable and awkward. He's bad at handling things and is quite possibly the worst when it comes to charm.
The language barrier|| Because Eugen spent the majority of his life speaking German before suddenly moving to Japan, his language skills aren't the greatest. Sometimes he zones out when he doesn't want to work at understanding what people are saying.

FEARS
Heights|| Planes, the top floors on buildings, bridges; they make Eugen feel ill.
Death|| Eugen doesn't ever want to come so close to it ever again.
Failure|| Being a failure for most of his life, the only cause for his turnaround seems to be that reality finally hit him in the face. Now, just the thought of letting someone down is enough to knot his stomach.

It's a given that everything I do will sooner or later come back and blow up in my face.

BIO
Eugen was born to Kirsa and Bertram Gaertner, who were from a lower middle class family living in Germany. Being the youngest of three children, Eugen was often 'babied' and his parents usually believed his word over his elder brother's or sister's. Eugen, being a trouble-maker since birth, was quick to take advantage of this and would often 'tattle' on his siblings, feeding stories to his mother that weren't true. His elder brother Aldric was the first to call him out on this, shortly followed by his sister Liesel. However, in the eyes of their parents it was still Eugen who was innocent.

Throughout childhood Eugen would cause all sorts of problems. From picking fights to acting out and just overall being rude and a pain to deal with, it wasn't long before he lost his place as the 'favourite child' of the Gaertner siblings. He'd run away over the smallest of things, his greats were far from satisfactory, and for some reason Eugen was simply in love with wreaking havoc. Every week there would be a new story to tell about whatever mess he had managed to get himself caught into.

For many years Eugen's powers weren't overly relevant to his life. No one knew about them, not even his two friends good Christoph and Edsel, until his ninth year of school when he made a baseball bat fly up and hit Christoph in the head. Some people didn't believe what they saw and convinced themselves that Eugen had simply thrown the bat, but others were not as easily swayed. Kids talked, rumors started, and word spread that something was horrifically wrong with the youngest Gaertner child. Eugen swore again and again that what had happened was an accident, but even Edsel, someone he had known for years and often got into trouble with, stopped speaking with him. He was later expelled from the school because of the incident, and because of all the negativity surrounding him it was nearly impossible to get any other schools to be willing to take him in. In just a span of a couple weeks Eugen went from the troublemaker to the outcast. He was unwanted, the other kids began to tell him. If they hadn't openly hated him before they certainly did now, and without the protection of the school there was nothing stopping anyone from getting back at him.

At the beginning of what would have been Eugen's tenth year of school, Kirsa and Bertram decided that it would be better for everyone if they were to send their son abroad. Kirsa had a sister who had moved to Japan with her husband, and the couple were more than eager to have Eugen stay with them. Originally the plan was to just have him away for a few months and he would return during when the holidays came around, but his stay was extended and it was decided that he would live with them full time instead, with the promised exception of returning to Germany every now and then.

The arrangement was something that shook Eugen greatly. For one, he knew next to nothing when it came to speaking or writing Japanese. For two, the fact that his parents could send him off so easily and to such a far away place was something that came as a shock to him. In a way, he felt as if he were betrayed. His aunt Isolde was incredibly helpful though, and despite being a stranger until recently, she had set up a bedroom for him and even enrolled him in language classes as well. Schooling was a different matter and Isolde suggested that he could take courses online, which he willingly did. But adjusting wasn't something that came easily to Eugen. After the recent events with the flying bat and people not believing him, and then being shunned to top it all off, Eugen was quick to build walls around himself. The only person he talked to for months was Isolde, and with every day he increasingly felt that he was growing more and more alone. In a country which language was one he could hardly understand and living with people he hardly knew, Eugen reminded himself of a prisoner.

After nearly a year of living with Isolde and her husband, a year of complete unhappiness, Eugen took it upon himself to fix the situation and run away. How that came up as a solution is beyond Eugen now, but the decision had been made hastily in a desperate attempt for change. He wrote a brief note as an explanation for Isolde that told her not to look for him, and then he left. What happened next quickly unfolded to become a rather rough patch in his life, but his pride stopped him from coming back.

It was an odd time for things to begin to pick themselves up, mostly because by that time Eugen had convinced himself that things would always stay relatively down. He was homeless, he had no money, he was considering a life of questionable activities in order to get by. His situation was gloomy and grey and all around hopeless, and after months of what felt like him trying to run underwater, Eugen came to the conclusion that if life was going to be like that way, then life wasn't worth living. If he were to look back at it now, it was obvious that he wasn't thinking straight. He hadn't eaten in days and had went without sleep for even longer, and he had been angry with himself as well as everyone around him. He was just someone who could make paperclips and fridge magnets stick to his hands anyway, and he had already ruined enough peoples lives. What did he matter? And so, he picked a place (a high enough bridge) he looked down, and he... well, he didn't do it, obviously. Though nothing really changed in in his mind, Eugen sighed and stepped down. He could never look at bridges or high places the same way after that, though.

Eugen walked for what felt like eternity. He had no location in mind, he had no future plans. His brain seemed to be working on auto-pilot and Eugen just kept walking until his legs felt like they couldn't take another step. When he finally stopped, he wasn't sure where he had ended up. He had never been familiar with fairy-tales, but he was certain that if they could be translated into real life, this place is what they would look like. It was there did Eugen become a part of something that, at the time, he had no idea would become so important to him.
