- Despite his intimidating appearance, Rye is actually a pretty normal guy. His default expression tends to be a poker face, difficult to read, but don't let that deter you. If you talk to him, he tends to flash a good-natured smile as greeting before asking what's up. While at one point his personality might have matched his image, he claims those days are long past him. While one can't exactly call him outgoing or friendly, he's sociable enough that it's easy to fall into a conversation with him. He's not the type to start a conversation himself, but he usually won't refuse should anyone decide they wanted to talk.
More than once Rye's been compared to the dependable big brother, at least on an emotional level. While he's rare to talk about himself, many find that it's easy to unburden themselves on him. You can't exactly rely on him further than that, unfortunately. Yes, Ryland is willing to assume responsibilities for his mistakes. The problem is he makes a lot. Certainly not with his job as an Enforcer; he's meticulous with his weaponry and abilities. But if you ask him to run to the grocery and pick up a few things, chances are he'll forget he was supposed to go altogether. He's the kind of person who'll forget their phone in the fridge, or leave the water on in the bathroom. While he's quick to apologize and own up to his faults, this makes him far from the ideal housemate.
Despite being willing to lend an ear to everyone else, Rye dislikes speaking about his own problems. He has this need to appear unflappable and emotionally invincible to everyone else. When something bothers him, he's good at hiding it behind an easygoing facade. He thinks himself as something of the group's pillar or foundation; a small crack could send everything collapsing. In this sense, he thinks of everyone as his responsibility, whether they like it or not.
He doesn't have much of a sense for leadership though, despite his excellent sense of responsibility. This is due to the fact he hates making decisions. He simply doesn't have a logical enough frame of mind to make rational choices. He tends to overthink everything, even in his daily life. The simple act of choosing what to eat at a restaurant is a struggle by itself for him, which is why he'll often order the same thing all the time once he finds something he likes. And quite frankly, he hates the idea of being responsible for a failure. Ryland likes the feeling of making the correct decision, but he's a pessimist at heart and will think of the worst possible scenarios before anything else even happens. It's why he's the enforcer rather than any sort of authority. He's good at following orders and making sure they're carried through by the others. Giving them? Not so much.
Familiarity may be comforting, but it's also confining.

- Psychometry is commonly defined as the ability to pick up residual information of an object via their senses, usually by touch. People will always leave a psychic imprint on whatever they touch, although the strength of the imprint depends on the frequency and emotions of the person. Not only that, but this residual information fades overtime, so the freshness plays a big factor on just how effective Ryland's power is.
Most often, folks would use this for information gathering, but the brunette breaks the mould in this aspect. However, should the need arise, he can probably pull through. For example, if Rye were to touch the wall where a murder took place, even if there was no physical evidence, he'd be able to pick up on the emotions of the people inside during the crime, as well as extremely hazy images of what happened. Unfortunately, the retrocognition aspect of his ability isn't well-developed so other than confirming something took place somewhere, it's better to have him stick to the more tangible advantage of his power.
His most preferred usage of the power? It's commonly known as heightened ability learning or knowledge replication, although the latter term may be a bit of a misnomer. With a touch, Rye is able to gain the proficiency of the previous user of the object and keep that information for himself. Unfortunately, this is often confined to muscle memory and he will only truly learn a skill through repeated practice. For example, you can give him a surgeon's scalpel, and while he'll know how to hold it or how much pressure to apply, it doesn't mean he'll know how to operate on someone. Or let's say a bow of a master archer. Under ideal conditions, he should be able to hit the target with ease using the original owner's perfect form. However, should factors like wind come into effect, he will not know how to account for those things without practice.
People are the most dishonest with themselves.

- Dominic and Julia Van Leeuwenhoek were probably anyone's idea of an ideal couple. Stupidly in love, steady in employment and gifted with a son that showed a natural athleticism beyond that of other boys. Rye's father was happy to spend time with his son, teaching and honing his natural skills. He himself was a police officer, ready to protect the citizens of Detroit. Maybe a bit too eager, as threats started arriving at his doorstep, the enemies ready to silence him. It didn't take long until an attack was staged at their house and the result? Julia Van Leeuwenhoek was no more.
Ryland was devastated by the loss of his mother at only eight years of age, but no one was more distraught than his father. The drug cartel that attacked thought they finally broke the detective who was getting too close for comfort. Unfortunately for all sides, all it did was break the line of sanity. Dominic, developing a taste for alcohol and nurturing an obsessive desire for revenge, threw himself into taking justice into his hands. He became a vigilante, willing to kill anyone who he thought was even related to the crime against his wife. Rye became legitimately afraid of his own father, but he couldn't stop him, couldn't convince him. When Dominic found he needed a lookout, someone to watch his back, his own son was his first logical choice, forcing him into the role. The former officer had long since lost any allies he once had over the years.
It all ended one fateful night, when Dominic had finally cornered one of the largest drug dealers of the city. Rye had been tasked to pour liquid around the warehouse's perimeter, afraid of his father's drunken rampages if he didn't do his job. Then he heard the sound of a gunshot, and then a small explosion; it was enough to start the smoke. The building caught fire so fast; it didn't take long for him to realize that whatever he'd poured, it was flammable. His father intended to die tonight, but bring down his targets with him. By the time the police and firemen came it was too late; Ryland had fled and all that was left of the building were ashes. At the age of 11, Rye was an orphan to a dead criminal.
Rye lived on the streets for a few months, then wound up picking a fight with the wrong kind of people. But John O'Neil saw beyond the tattered clothes and starved body; he saw a desire to survive and a willingness to fight. Took him in, raised him as his own son, and in a twist of fate, groomed him to be the bodyguard of one of the city's other drug lords. The used weapons they'd trained him with became Rye's source of strength; his abilities with psychometry grew. He learnt to feel out suspicious activity, gain knowledge with a touch, even became scarily proficient at any new weapon he touched as long as someone with decent ability used it before.
But much like his father's reign, it came to an end when he was tasked with a more menial job; take care of a pusher gone rogue. When he found him, it made him sick. The gangly teenager was only fifteen to Rye's nineteen, but his body was already at the brink of destruction. Addiction had rotted away at him, physically and mentally, all left was a husk wanting more, desperation forcing him to almost insanity . All Rye could see was his own father. He didn't even hesitate as he grabbed the teenager forcefully and drove him away from the city. Days of riding until Rye finally felt he was out of O'Neil's reach, and then dropped the boy off at the nearest rehab center for his troubles. All that was left was to figure out what to do. He knew getting cash was safe; he learnt from the best on how to make and keep it after all. All that was left was figuring out where to go.
The brunette wasn't sure so he wound up doing odd jobs almost everywhere from Brazil to the Philippines. It's been years since he last visited his parents' graves but honestly, he finally felt free. His feet landed him in Japan, to a cobblestone courtyard straight out of the storybooks his mother read to him as a child. There he met others like him, whose powers went beyond a human's normal scope of talents. He was given another job but this time, it was one he took willingly. But is that all there is to it?
