Introduction
Avalon is a powerful Island nation, whoβs history stretches back thousands of years and the current monarchy can trace itβs family tree back to the original settlers, an exiled King and his loyalists from the neighbouring country of Luxor. These first few turned an untamed island into the most desired country in the world; however this did not come without sacrifice. Many battles were fought on land and sea for power over Avalon, a strategic stronghold for any country wanting to conquer more land, no more so than between the Avalonianβs and the Luxorβs, whoβs feud had been taking place since the original settlers and continues onwards, with both armies and navyβs of equal strength a stalemate occurred on all fronts, which resulted in a peace treaty, this has been in place for a hundred years but recently tempers have started to flare once more and both side rebuild their armies for what can only be described as an inevitable war.
The Avalonianβs are very technologically advanced compared to other Kingdomβs in the world, they are the only country who have full use of the printing press and a circulating news paper, they are also very diverse culturally, paving a way for musicians, actors and artists as they find these very important in society. (The time is very similar to the Tudor times in England.)Sport is another major feature of social life, weekly jousting games are held by different noble families, along with hunts, archery, horse races and wrestling. Grand parties are held often nightly at the palace, attended by all those who live at court, here people get very drunk and sleep with people who arenβt their husbands or wives.
The country is divided between two religions and any other forms of religion are deemed unlawful and can be classed as treason if the King seems fit. Both religions believe in the same God and that is why they are the only two religions allowed in Avalon. The difference between the religions is how each side worships the god, one side believed that to worship god you must go to his church every day and honour him living a prosperous and morally correct life, the other side believe that music, dance and fun are the correct ways to honour the god as you are celebrating your creation. The difference in beliefs causes some tension between the two sides and could be the cause of a rebellion as they believe the monarch are too relaxed in their religious views.
The current reigning monarch is the House of DeGrey; they are currently the longest reigning monarch with their rule spanning two hundred years. The DeGreyβs are a family loved by their people, ruling as a just monarch but with a line of adultery and bastard children, many other houses have rivalled their claim to the throne. Scandal has constantly been a major feature during the DeGreyβs rule over the years, murder, adultery, treason and torture have all been very present in the lives of the previous Kingβs, Queenβs, princes and princesses. The crown is passed down on the current King or Queenβs death bed to the child they believe has earned the right; this has always been the eldest son up to know.
The City of Arva
The city of Arva or The Kings City as it is more commonly know stands fifty miles inland in the South Western corner of Avalon, surrounded by rolling green hills, colourful fields, dense forestry and fertile farmland, Arva is truly a gem in the crown jewels. Built by the DeGreyβs ancestors upon their exile from Luxor, Arva is rich in history and culture to rival no other and has been the main residence of the royal family for generations. A strategic stronghold for inland advances, Arva has been heavily fortified over the years, not only is it home to the Kings army but the cityβs towering walls and high ground make it near enough indestructible as nobody has managed to penetrate itβs walls yet, efficiently protecting itβs thousands of inhabitants. Arva has very defined and consistent seasons unlike other parts of the country, the winters can be extremely harsh, with inches upon inches of snow and bitterly cold winds blowing in from the ocean, a deep contrast to their sweltering summers, with glorious sun and ever rising temperatures.
Although heavily fortified, Arva would be the first major strong hold invaders from the south would encounter and despite being strongly defended, like all places Arva does have its weaknesses and if the enemy found out these weakness they could easily exploit them and then the city would undoubtedly fall not long after. From then on it would be an easy ride to the other major cities of Avalon.

The Western Reach
Avalon is a Kingdom of great beauty, stretching from coast to coast with mighty rivers, imposing mountains, vast plains of rolling wheat and people who offer you a friendly greeting and a smile.
To the West of the Kingβs Court and the Royal capital there rises a ridged spine of mountains. They start far to the north and then race south, ending at the southern ocean. These jagged peaks are cut two passes, the High Pass and the Ghost Pass. Each one holds its own wonders or miseries but it is agreed that both eventually lead to a land likened to heaven on earth. The Western Reach, nestled between the ocean and the mountains is a climate that is kind with long summers and short pleasant winters. It rains four out of every seven days but when the sun does come out, bathing the rainforests in warm rays, there is no land more beautiful.
Set to guard this land with his life, and those of his line still to come, is Duke Henry Devalin. Since the foundations of Avalon his family has been the Western bulwark against pirates and foreign invasion. An impressive navy based out of the Emerald Islands keeps the seas secure while a powerful standing army has kept order and helped enforce the rule of the Devalins.
Many of the Reaches cities lie inland, away from the coast, which can tend to be lined with steep cliffs and dangerous shoals. Here and there however major ports flourish, protected by great citadels that serve to remind all of the power of Avalon should they seek to invade. The greatest of these is also home to the Devalin Family, the fortress City of Caerwyn. Here, in the second largest city of the Kingdom, safe behind the greatest walls in the world, the Duke watches his cousins carefully.
The people of the Western Reach have not known war on their lands for their entire lives. The defensive position of the region makes it very difficult to attack though it is prone to flooding and vicious Hurricanes. The region is also shaken at least once a year by an earthquake, though there hasnβt been a serious one in over twenty years.
Fortresses of the Reach
Caerwyn
Caerwyn is the heart of the Devalin line. Built in one of the few open breaks in the great Cliffs of Mourn that follow the entire coast it is a city of beauty that openly displays the power of the Devalin family.
Glyndwr
Located in the High Pass, this fortress is the key to the entire southern Reach. To take this town is to command the roads that allow the movement of all supplies and troops. Commanded by a woman fanatically loyal to the Devalin line, Lady Scarlet as she is known, this fortress is in good hands.
Emerald Isles
Beyond the battlements of Caerwyn lies the Western ocean and the Emerald Isles. This series of islands provides safe harbour for the entire Western Armada, a mighty fleet commanded by the Baron Clarkson.
(Credit for Western Reach goes to Tempest, this was all his hard work)
Ghost Past
Situated only about 20 miles north of the King's Capital and the quickest road between the Western Reach and the Royal Court, the Ghost Pass has long been a figure of Avalon legend and ghost stories. Filled with forest, sheer cliffs, plentiful game and vegetation, and the occasional swamp, Ghost Pass is dominated by Castle Cadarn, a fortress built to protect the pass from raiders and the rest of the nation should the West Reach be inavded by Luxorians or other invaders. Its dismal landscape and violent history has cast a superstitious fear about it. Though the land isn't the biggest fief in Avalon, deposits of granite and iron along with raw materials held within the forest has made it valuable. With the most recent Baron dead and heirless, the Crown has taken possession of it temporarily and many nobles have petitioned for its stewardship, including the King's brother. (Credit for Ghost Past goes to Almostinsane)
The women's dresses were very seductive, tight bodices, very low cut, big, flowing skirts and rich colors.
Winnfell Palace is the monarchy's main residence, located in the capital city of Arva, it is a military strong point as well as a place of beauty. The white wash walls, towering steeples and the magnificent gardens attract many nobles and many monarchs from neighboring countries.

With King Edward DeGrey lll on his death bed, he bequeaths the crown onto his eldest son Prince James, causing some tensions in the family as many donβt believe he had earned the right to succeed his father, due to living most of his life ignoring his royal duties, favouring sporting events, drinking and women. The story begins with his coronation and I will collaborate with other players to develop more story archβs as the RP moves on.

As they had gotten older he and Rivera had grown apart somewhat with him being focussed on learning what was required for Kingship and she equally focussed on training to be a knight. Yet even though they were far from the close friends they had been in childhood James had never believed she would be capable of betraying him. Yet Christineβs words were compelling and the evidence if accurate was in itself quite damning. James forced himself to consider the possibility that Rivera was indeed guilty and therefore the decision he would be forced to make. The standard sentence for treason was death and James doubted he could offer a lesser sentence without inviting the ire of the nobles that supported him. Of course he was unsure how he felt about it, if she had indeed betrayed him then surely death was only what she deserved. Yet ordering her to her death caused a sick feeling in his stomach.
He tore his eyes away from the goblet and pushed his memories to the back of his mind, he could not afford to get lost in sentimentality not when so much rested on this. As much as he wished he could deny it, this was about far more than a knight accused of treason. The political ramifications of this trial and consequent decision would have far reaching implications for his role as King. This was his first major decision as King, and he was well aware that everyone was watching to see how he would handle it. If he handled it badly or upset too many with the outcome he had no doubt that he could lose valuable support for his throne. The last thing he needed, what with being so newly crowned, was more people doubting if he was right for the monarchy.
He looked at Emmanuel and sighed. βWhat do you think Em, is she guilty?β
Katherine leaned back in the large tub and sighed in pleasure, her muscles were warm and relaxed, and for a moment considered staying there all evening. But only for a moment as she had too much to do. With a resigned sigh she stood and stepped out of the bath and onto the thickly carpeted floor, her maid hurried forward with a silk dressing robe and Katherine belted it around her waist. She seated herself at her mirrored dressing table and allowed her maid to begin brushing out her long thick hair. As the maid gently teased out the tangles Katherineβs thoughts turned to the man that Nathanial had installed in one of the guest rooms.
Who was he? How had he ended up outside their door in such a condition? He was at present an unknown quantity and Katherine did not like people present in their home whom she knew next to nothing about. Katherine prided herself on knowing the secrets all her staff and guests kept hidden from the world, she did nothing with this information but knowing what motivated people had proved useful to her in the past. She also knew which members of her household spied for others, every noble house had their own fair share of spies working for others, and because she knew she ensured they all passed on false information with only grains of truth. Yet this man was a complete mystery to her and that was something she intended to rectify.
Her maid finished brushing out her hair and picked up one of the comfortable gowns Katherine wore when at home, it was a simple blue gown made of wool with long sleeves. Its only adornment was lighter blue stitching at the waist, hem and cuffs. Katherine left her long hair loose as she doubted anyone would object to this on the day she arrived home from a journey. She was just putting on soft slippers when there was a knock at the door. Her maid answered it and spoke briefly with the servant at the door.
βMy Lady, His Grace requests your presence.β Her maid informed her.
βThank you Millie, I will go and see him now.β
She left her rooms and began walking down corridors though in the opposite direction to her brothers rooms, she had informed Nathanial earlier that she would visit this mysterious man after she had changed and she intended to do just that. She walked quickly down the stairs to the floor the guest rooms were on and saw Nathanial approaching from the other direction.
βMy Lady.β He greeted her. β Youβre here to see our unnamed visitor?β
At Katherineβs nod Nathanial led her to the guest room where the man was and opened the door, Katherine walked past him and entered the room. She could clearly see that the room had been used for someone injured from the bandages on the side and the smell of the room. But what was also clearly apparent was that the man was not here, there was only a female servant asleep in the chair. Katherine turned on her heel and walked out meeting Nathanialβs questioning gaze.
βHe is not here.β She said. β He managed to leave without waking hisβ¦minder.β
Nathanial frowned. βI apologize my lady, I will she is appropriately punished.β
βSee to it and have the guards search the house, I want this man found. When they do bring him to the Dukeβs dining room. I think it about time my brother and I spoke with our guest.β
Katherine walked away without waiting for a reply confident that her steward would do as she ordered. She walked to their personal dining room concentrating on removing the feeling of irritation she felt as it was a waste of energy. The man would be found and no harm would be done she assured herself. The guard standing outside her brothers door bowed when he saw her, knocked once on the door and then opened it. She walked in and smiled warmly when she saw Henry no worse for wear after his journey.
βBrother.β She greeted him warmly.
Sergeant Skrine was angry, and rightfully so. A man was on the loose somewhere in his liege lords home and no one had thought to place a guard on him, save for an old biddy of a nurse that he wouldn't want looking after his own wounds. When he received word, from the Duke's sister no less, that the man was missing he turned out the entire guard detail not already on shift to find the man, and quietly.
Thankfully it did not take long. The house was a large one with many hallways and floors and so the poor man had become quite lost. They found him in one of the long plushly carpeted hallways of the guest wing and the Sergeant, with two other soldiers, challenged him.
"Good evening sir. I am glad we found you!" He could see the fellow was in pain and he didn't blame him, anyone thrown from a moving carriage could expect considerable repercussions. "Will you please allow me to escort you back to your room. I would see you into some proper clothes before I take you to see the Duke."
Duke Henry Devalin
The rain was still battering the glass and the lightening strikes coming more frequently when the knock sounded and he turned, a broad smile splitting his craggy features as Katherine stepped through the doorway. The guard caught his eye for a moment.
"The Princess m'lord? If she comes?"
The Duke shook his head. "Ask her to wait if she does. I would have some time alone with my own family before I speak to her."
The guard saluted and the door closed.
"Sister! You look the picture of health, its disgusting." He said as he locked her in a massive bear hug. "I trust your journey wasn't to tedious?"
He sat now at the table, gesturing for her to join him. The table was made of a local redwood that gave off a fine scent. Candles and lanterns lit the entire room revealing dark panelled wood, solid but but comfortable furniture and big windows that shook as thunder rolled overhead. He sat at the head of the table, back to the windows, and poured a cup of tea for his sister, the aroma betraying it as an apple spice blend.
Sir Thomas Blackthorne
Thomas was lost. He had decided to brave the storm, reckoning it might lessen as he descended from the Mountain passes. What he couldn't see was the storm rolling in from the sea and so was beneath the two when they met in an awesome crescendo of noise and light. His horse had reared, tossing its rider into the rainforest and then bolted back towards the mountains. There was nothing he could do but watch it vanish into the curtains of water that rolled like waves down the roadway.
With curses and having no other choice he pulled his sodden cloak about his shoulders and began to walk west. One blessing was the method of road building in the Reach. The roadways were raised above the level of the surrounding forest and then paved with thick paving stones, this at least allowed him to walk free of any mud. It also meant that the rain, when it struck the stones, bounced back up and soon what little part of him had been dry, was as drenched as the rest. At least it wasn't windy.
He finally came upon a town, he would have walked right by it in the darkness if a breeze hadn't suddenly plucked at his cloak, causing him to pause and glance around. The rainforest had given way to fields and beyond them, a few lights barely visible between sheets of rain, he could see a tower. He moved further down the road, finding the spot where it branched and led towards the town. He hurried along it, colliding head first with the gateway, bouncing off it like rain from the paving stones and landing painfully on his tailbone.
He was still sitting there, cursing the weather when a small wicket gate opened and a helmeted face peered down at him, then a lantern shone into his eyes. A long moment then a voice spoke, the first human voice he had heard in almost twelve hours.
"Good god man what the hell are you doing out in this?" A strong hand reached out and pulled him to his feet and through the wicket gate. Here, under the protection of the gatehouse above he found himself facing three Devalin soldiers. All were armed but none seemed interested in threatening him.
"Horse threw me, been walking fer hours." Thomas managed to say, suddenly feeling very cold as his teeth began to chatter.
"I bloody well would think so." Responded his rescuer. "Get yourself on through to the Black Boar, second building on the right. Nothing fancy but she's got a fine soup and warm beds."
Thomas nodded his thanks and hurried on, finding the inn easy enough, the black boar head that stared down at him seemingly amused by his plight. He stumbled through the door and was met with a wave of warmth that set him to coughing at once. It took a few moments for it to subside and then he looked up. The taproom was virtually empty save for a girl who stared wide eyed at him from behind the bar counter. Even in his condition he could tell that she was pretty, blonde with a fine figure and wide blue eyes that reminded him of Gwen.
Then the world began to swim before his eyes, he managed one step and then collapsed onto the floor with a crash.

βIβm afraid not your graceβ the man replied curtly.
Gwenβs head snapped back towards him, her jaw tightening βexcuse me?β she repeated unsure if she had just heard correctly βAnd why is that?β she asked her stoic yet her eyes relayed her growing frustration as she looked pointedly at the guard, although Gwen did not look intimidating, her eyes and harsh words could leave even the toughest of men quivering in the corner at her wrath.
βMy lord wishes to speak with his sister firstβ the man replied.
Nodding Gwen sipped on her wine, her icy gaze still holding that of the guards βvery well I shall remain here until your lord is ready to see meβ she answered dismissing him with her hand. With a quick bow the guard quickly left, letting out a sigh she leant her head back against the back of her chair and closed her eyes, every second she spent in this household she began to feel less and less welcome, it was rather intimidating is she admitted truthfully, especially with her personal guard situated across the side of the city, she began to have that she was being isolated.
Standing up she walked across the room to a writing desk, sitting down she began to scribble a quick letter to her brother.
Darling James,
I have arrived safely in Caerwyn, however I do not know how welcome I am, every second I spend in this place I feel less welcome, my men have been sent to the other side of the city and are greatly outnumbered by Henryβs men and so hence forth I shall not stay more than two nights, expect me back for then dear brother. Please donβt fret by this letter, I highly doubt I will come to any harm in the Dukes care and could be wrong about my feeling towards the household, perhaps I am feeling a little apprehensive about leaving my family and just want to come home sooner but rest assure I am currently in good health. Please send my love onto Lelinus and Arrabella.
All my love,
Your Sister,
Gwen
Stuffing the letter into an envelope she sealed it and addressed the front, standing up she walked over to the maid she felt she could trust the most βLilly dear, please get this letter to one of my guards and tell him to ride back to Arva immediately and deliver the message to King personallyβ she smiled warmly, also handing the girl a gold coin βand that is for your troubles.β
Lilly nodded and with a quick curtsey left the room, having been left lonesome in her room, Gwen sank back down into the chair and her thoughts began to drift back towards Thomas, a smiled soon followed as she thought about the night they had spent together the previous evening, she counted the hours until she could be back in his arms.

It was always how Emanuel had answered No to any matter of question. Bejeweled fingers idly encircled the top of the trio of goblet for a brief while. His eyes gander around it had seemed that Jamie had really needed that drink and a precise answer. He somehow thought it was ironic how he became the conscience for his friend before him for a long time it had always seemed to be the other way around. Then again, they weren't young scions out to claim the world anymore: They were lords and masters.
"Rivera though brave and loyal that is true: Is far too stupid to every truly be as efficient and dubious a spy that she is being painted out." He had answered not even trying to be malicious "Shes doesn't possess smarts to pull an operation like this off well or gracefully." He confessed, the first goblet was savoured and drunk before he continued onward.
"Plus Jamie, Rivera is loyal to Linenus; she would never betray him by betraying you and the fact that Linenus was genially surprised to hear about this tells me two things: One: Linenus has more information brokers than the devil's tit. If she really was doing this he would have found out months in advance and talked her out of it. Two: If Linenus was in on the affair, Rivera would have never been caught."
"I know you're in league with those dock workers! I know you thought you could keep me weak!" Sir Julian spat as he pointed his sword violently at the Sergeant. "What I don't know is where I am, but I intend to find out! I am on official business between the Duke of Dawnsea and the Duke of the Emerald Isles! If you try to stop me the Dukes will team up and bring down both their armies on this villainous hideout! A national incident!"
Julian smirked at the man, even though his head was such a mess he could barely keep his vision still. "So, good sir. I suggest you step aside and direct me toward the exit. I must get to Caerwyn at once."
The current Olaf Ironskin was riding through Arva in full armor as he was wont to do whenever he visited other lands. People needed to know that the North was strong and Olaf took pleasure in the stares and chatter of the peasants and craftsmen and, later on, merchants, bankers, and nobles as he approached the palace with his honor guard, geared for battle as always. There were more murders in Winnfell Palace than anywhere else and if there was one thing that Olaf was determined about, it was that he would die in honorable, fierce battle, preferably with his enemy taken with him. When they arrived at the castle, the Duke smiled at the guards as though there was an equal chance he might shake their hand or challenge them to a duel.
"I am the Duke of Dawnsea. Please express my apologies for not making it to His Majesty's coronation on time," he announced in a thick Northern accent.
She smiled lightly as his eyes fluttered a little open. "Oh good no way I could carry you to a bed, come on." She helped him to his feet carefully sliding his arm around her shoulder slowly taking the stairs. Once in the room she helped him flop onto the bed. She sniffed out a slight chuckle seeing that he seemed to have falling directly back to sleep once his head hit the pillow.
She left him be going back to the bar below fixing him a bowl of hot soup and a chunk of bread. She walked back into his room lighting the candles. "I am aware you would most likely prefer to sleep but I think you will catch your death if you don't get something warm in your body." She sat the tray in her lap as she perched at the foot of the bed.

He continued to sip his drink thinking on what his friend had to say and it was only when the rest of the council began filing back into the room did he realise how much time had passed.
A few moments later those he had sent to inspect Rivera's rooms also returned carrying several bundles which they carefully placed on the table before resuming their seats. James glanced at the guard who had returned with them and the guard approached him immediately.
"Sire?"
"Have you found the man who delivered this letter to Lady Huor?"
"No Sire, I can assure we will do so but it may take some time."
"Very well." James said. "Continue the search."
The guard bowed and left the room and James turned his attention back to the table where everyone had quieted and were waiting on him to re initiate proceedings.
"Gentleman let us continue." James said. "You have completed the inspection on the accused quarters?"
One man, Lord Ellwood whose estates were one of the largest in Avalon, rose and cleared his throat. "We have your Majesty."
James regarded him levelly and noticed with approval that the man's gaze was steady and his voice calm, James believed him when he said they had done so and he also believed they would have been thorough. Lord Ellwood was an older man in his fifties who had a reputation as being methodical and thorough which was exactly what James needed right then.
"What have you discovered?"
Lord Ellwood nodded and two other lords rose and began unwrapping the bundles they had laid on the tables, once all had been carefully unwrapped and all could see their contents they re seated themselves. James looked at their contents and sighed in resignation, there was enough evidence on the table to surely show Rivera's guilt even without the delivery man, he clenched one fist under the table but showed no other reaction to the items in front of him.
"As you can see your majesty we found a great deal of weaponry just as Lady Huor advised and it is in our opinion that such an amount is more than one person can justify in keeping in their quarters. It is also our opinion that these items, and the items documenting both Sir Talimir's parentage and correspondence with Duke Hoar, is enough to show the accused's guilt."
James nodded having expected him to say something like that, he looked at the other men in the room and many of them nodded in agreement. Though many also shook their heads. If he guessed right it was only just over half who believed her guilty with the rest clearly believing her innocent. James sat silently for a moment thinking hard.
"Very well, thank you Lord Ellwood." Lord Ellwood bowed and resumed his seat." If there is no further physical evidence to be presented then I suggest we interview the accused. Guard escort Sir Talimir to me immediately."
"At once sire." The guard nodded at his companion and the two left to carry out his orders.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Katherine found herself grinning back at her brother, his genuine happiness in seeing her made her feel light at heart, she allowed him to hug her even though she thought a few ribs might crack. She was pleased to see he was looking well if a little tired but otherwise the same as he always looked.
"As oppose to you who look like something the cat dragged in and smell like it too!" She retorted with an impish grin. "But yes my journey was fine and more than a little interesting. Our cousin makes for insightful conversation."
She seated herself opposite her brother and accepted the cup of tea gratefully, she breathed in its scent appreciatively and took a moment to savour its taste. She had missed little things like her apple tea and other things she could not get in Avalon.
"I believe our cousin genuinely hopes to bring us closer together during her time here. Either that or she is a very clever little actress. But if that is what she believes then it means they have no idea what is really going on."
She sipped some more of tea before continuing, she told her brother in brief about the ball and its guests including the ambassador from Luxor. She advised her brother that she put to rest a few plots that would interfere with their own plans and carefully encouraged others that equally draw attention to what they were doing. She gave her opinion on the King and how she believed he could be easily swayed and what the nobles thought of him.
"All in all it was a successful trip if dreadfully dull. Honestly Henry, the guests were so transparent it was really no challenge at all."
Katherine felt again that familiar pang of loneliness she was feeling more often these days, it wasn't that she was not pleased to see her brother again, but more that she was beginning to think she would be alone the rest of her life. Sister to a Duke, reliant on his charity with no husband to call her own. It was not that she needed a husband and she resented the idea of any man attempting to control her yet...she often found herself wishing for the companionship being married brought with it. She frowned in irritation, annoyed at herself for becoming so maudlin and determinedly pushed such thoughts aside.
"I will go, there is no where for me to run, you will not touch me." She said coldly, and the man cowered.
She said not a word as she was led up to the throne room, or after she was there. She stood in the same place Christine had before her, and she could feel the green-eyed gauze on her back. She locked eyes with James once, and stared him down. She didn't look away, her grey eyes burning into his own blue ones. Was this truly the boy she'd grown up with, sparred with?
"The accused is ready for questioning, your Majesty."
Henry listened carefully to his sister. He was, as always, impressed by her take on a situation and how she could handle people. One of his weaknesses was dealing with people politically. He had ever been a soldier and the whole graces and airs thing had never really taken with him. Her opinion of the King and his court was vitally important to him and as she spoke of the ball and those she had met he stood, pacing slowly in front of the big window, watching the rain batter down on his city. The Luxorian bit was interesting, it could open some interesting possibilities if he played his cards right.
He noticed, as she began to conclude her story a pang of something flit through her features but he said nothing. If she was going to tell him she would and there was no sense in pushing her. When he was sure she had nothing to add he thanked her and then called for the guard.
"M'lord?" The helmeted face appeared.
"Please send for the Princess and ask her to join us."
The guard saluted and the door closed again. Henry looked at his sister and sighed. "Let us see what I have wrought sister. I only hope that you have given me the key we need to break this damned family open and put them where they belong."
They did not have long to wait, a few minutes of silence as the two siblings considered what was to come. When the door swung open Henry turned, framed by the blackness outside, a bolt of lightening cutting the sky. He bowed.
"Your majesty. Welcome to Caerwyn."
Sergeant Caar
The big Sergeant opened his mouth to reply to the strange man but he wasn't given a chance as the fool grabbed a weapon from a display rack and began to threaten them. Really he didn't blame the man but the Sergeant was not someone who had gotten his job by being patient with angry armed men. His job was to protect his lordship, his family and his home. The stranger was threatening all of that right now.
Stepping forward as if to speak to the man he swiftly lashed out with his spear, slamming the shaft of it into the side of the strangers head and sending him crashing to the ground. Behind him one of the guards chuckled.
"Foine shot sah."
The Sergeant grunted as he gestured at the prostrate form. "Get 'im oop'n back inta 'is bloody bed. Throw a shackle on em. Both'a you lads stay wit em till I comes fer em. Savvy?"
The soldiers nodded and between them they carried the comatose man back to his room. A strong shackle was fetched and he was tethered to the solid oaken bed. The two guards took up their posts inside the room, pulling a deck of cards out and starting a hand. The fat nurse continued to snore, oblivious of the goings on.
Sir Thomas Blackthorne
Thomas was running, he didn't know from what but he could feel the fear, the sweat dripping down his back as he ran. He risked glance over his shoulder, it was coming! He tried to lash out at it but something entangled his arm and he couldn't get free. He fell and tried to fight with but the more he struggled the more entangled he got. Sweat was soaking his body now as he lashed out, his foot catching something solid and sending it spinning away into the blackness.
In the grip of a fever he could never have known he would get from his tumble into the rainforest, Thomas's battle with whatever beast haunted his mind had entangled him in the bed sheets, his foot kicking the tray from Vivians hands. His struggles at length ceased and he collapsed back into the mattress, his eyes glazed over as he laboured for breath. His right hand clenched and then unclenched as if grasping for a sword hilt. Sweat soaked the bed now, his long hair plastered across his face. Slowly his eye lids closed again and mercifully he slept.
βMy lord will see you knowβ he spoke swiftly with a small, curt bow, holding the heavy door open for her. Nodding Gwen rose from the plush chair, slipping her feet into a pair of emerald slippers which matched her robe before walking across her spacious room towards the door. Waiting momentarily for the guard to shut the door behind her, she followed him down to the main dining; the halls were almost completely darkened save for the candles illuminating the end of each room. The rain lashed against the window panes with some force as the lightening lit up the night sky followed closely by monstrous clasps of thunder, she felt almost childlike once more being startled by loud storms, when she would run to James room and hide under his covers. The thought brought a brief smile to face but was cut off as the guard stopped in front of a pair of large oak door, opening them she heard Henryβs voice almost immediately.
"Your majesty. Welcome to Caerwyn."
Smiling Gwen stepped out of the shadows βHenryβ she smiled in a warm greeting, it was strange seeing him again after such a long time, they had never been close as children yet Gwen held him and Katherine close to her heart, she could never understand why they seemingly disliked her so, she recalled James calling her naΓ―ve when she brought it up with him and so had never mentioned it again. Stepping forward she placed her hands in his and placed a light kiss on each of his cheeks βAs I told Katherine earlier, there are no need for such formalities, Gwendolyn or simply Gwen will so cousinβ she spoke softly but surely.

He glanced at the men gathered in the Privy council. βYou may begin the questioning.β
James had decided that it would be more appropriate if the privy council performed the questioning in order for him to appear unbiased and also fair. The Privy Council, though unused to performing such investigations, were all upstanding lords of the realm and James was confident they would question Rivera thoroughly but fairly. After a moment of silence one of the southern lords rose from his seat and asked Rivera a question regarding her whereabouts at certain times. James waited for Riveraβs answer yet to his confusion she remained silent and after a a moment of strained silence the lord sat back down. Other Lords stood and posed their questions to Rivera and yet each time she remained stoic and silent. James was growing increasingly angry and frustrated as this continued as he felt Rivera was not helping herself by behaving this way. In refusing to answer she was only adding to the growing belief that she was indeed guilty of the charges against her. If she had answered their questions in a calm and logical manner James was sure the matter could have been resolved easily.
Yet the woman continued to be stubborn and James began to feel less respect for Rivera and her pride and more that she was deliberately trying to be difficult yet she was hurting no one but herself and James could not understand why. Finally there seemed to be no more questions to be asked of her and the Privy Council were looking at James to see what he would do now. All of the lords looked either angry, frustrated or confused by Riveraβs behaviour and James could not blame them. Emmanuel as usual kept his face blank and did not participate in the questioning and James was left wondering what he was thinking. Pushing that aside for now, for he could not be seen to rely on others for his behaviour, he looked at Rivera and his expression was grim. He deliberately kept his face expressionless like stone for he would not be drawn into making a rash decision out of anger because the foolish woman was being stubborn.
"Sir Talimir. Have you nothing to say in your own defence? This may be your last opportunity to speak." He asked calmly.
"This may be your last opportunity to speak."
The words angered her. A part of her wanted to remain silent, and another part simply wished to explain why she refused, and yet another part of her wanted to lash out. It would be the latter to win that internal battle, for better or for worse. Her eyes burning, she glared at the man who stood before her as King of Avalon. She started out in a normal tone of voice, but with each word her voice grew, until she was actually yelling.
"My last opportunity to speak? Truly? So that's how it ends, is it? Is my fate already decided? Why then, pray tell did you drag me in here in the first place? Why should I have to say anything, James?! I grew up with you, you, Lelinus, Arrabella, and Gwendolyn, you have been the only family I've ever known! What would have to gain by betraying you, any of you? Nothing! But I can tell you exactly what she has to gain from it!" She pointed directly at James. "That harlot has plenty to gain from my supposed betrayal and execution, the least of which being your good favor. Are you truly that blind, James, that you would think that I would actually do something like this?"
She finally stopped, her head down, and in a calmer voice said, "You know what? This is exactly the kind of decision you would make. You always were brash, and tended to act on what you wanted rather than what you should do. You want to send me to the gallows? Fine. Go ahead. No, I have nothing to say in my defense, because frankly I don't think it would make any sort of difference. These Lords are all thinking the same thing, it's written all over their faces. Go ahead, write me off to death's door. Frankly, I just don't give a shit."
"I for one think that is the stupidest thing I have every heard in this room."
Were the first words the Emanuel departed from his lips to voice his discontent. The other lords somewhat looked at him obviously insulted by how crash Lord Westbrook was, but he didn't care as he idly ran a finger across the top of the goblet. If Rivera continued to talk like that she would just talk herself to the grave. He knew she was innocent, and he knew if she was sent to death Jamie would never forgive himself.
"If you truly believe you are innocent, then you do frankly, give a shit whether you live or die. Your doing that god awful meat-head knight bravado again deary. Where you start acting like a child that has given up already." The man slightly belittled in courtly mockery though his tone became rather apathetic afterward. "Frankly I don't bloody give a toss on what you feel on the matter. It is my job to find out if these very serious allegations are true or not." He gave out harshly, but truthfully and harsh truths was exactly what this god forsaken boring place needed at times.
As he cleared his throat, Lord Westbrook somewhat stacked a group of letters together as he read them off again slightly, only focusing on the names each one of these letters were addressed to.
"Now with that out of my system I am going to ask you a question. I don't want a long winded statement, I don't want to know what you bloody believe in, I just want you to answer it with a direct answer." Emanuel prose, in reality he was trying to save her life, Rivera was just too thick headed for her own good so he used the harsh words to slightly ground her back into reality.
"What name do you common go by to receive official postage through messenger?"
Some of the lord nodded their heads, other talked, some whispered, many raised their brows in disgust. Westbrook didn't care, and if Rivera did care she would swallow that god forsaken pride of hers and answer the question. The noble idly took a drink as though perching his throat after all those words were said and done he knew he would walk out of this room with a black eye when he could prove that Rivera was not a conspirator.
She stood up and walked to the dressers to rewarm the cloth as he started to speak fighting whatever demon he was facing in his fever. She strained to hear him speak catching his name as he shouted it out the rag slipped from her hand. The Duke would pay for having him brought to him in this state it would be easy to turn him over. She looked back at him and her heart faltered. "Once he has broken this fever." She mused to herself before going back to his side and wiping off the new beads of sweat on his brow. She ran her finger along his brow convincing her self turning him in would be right and hating herself for being torn between doing it "It could just be the fever speaking for him if I am wrong it will be my neck would it not?" She took a shakey breath before going back to tending to him.
"There is one thing and one thing only that I have to say to you. This land can grow and become even stronger, so long as its people stand united. But the minuet even a speck o disgruntlement is discovered, and this land becomes divided, Avalon will fall from its very core outward. No one among the royal family, myself included, wants to see that happen. United we stand, and divided we fall. Remember that, James."
Henry smiled thinly as she kissed his cheeks. He had never been one for touchy feely moments and suspected she had done it to try and throw him off guard. Nonetheless he returned her greeting and then pulled out a chair, waiting for her to sit before he did so himself. He leaned back, comfortable in his home, one leg propped on the other as he regarded his cousin closely. There was no doubting that she was a beauty and could turn the heads of many men. He knew that this was not the purpose of her visit however, that would be a stretch even for the twisted DeGreys. There was something else, he had certainly missed it when they were children and now he reckoned he was about to find out why his cousin had chosen her as his envoy. He was glad Katherine was there to listen to offer her own opinions, he valued her skills more then anyone else's.
Outside the storm suddenly slackened off, and then with a heavy gust of wind it began to disperse, the moon peaking out from the clouds. It bathed the distant battlements of the Citadel in silver light, glinting off the barrels of cannons as they glistened with the rain. In the harbour below the seething waves slowed and the fog revealed a mighty fleet spread across the harbour.
"Well it is good to see you Gwen," Henry said with a friendly smile. "I am sorry I missed your brothers coronation, how is he?"
Thomas Blackthorne
It took several hours for Thomas's fever to slowly decline under the care of his new nurse. When his eyes finally fluttered open ad he locked his gaze upon the young woman who has tending to him he felt a flutter in his stomach. She was beautiful. Redhair fell past her shoulders to rest on her breast, striking eyes regarding him carefully from a face that looked as if it had been chiselled from marble.
He was all to aware of his bodies response to her and so he rolled onto his side to hide the bulge that had begun to grow beneath the covers. He blinked at her a few times again, taking in the room, his clothes drying by the fire, the hot water and rags. His sheets were still soaked and he desperately wanted to sit up. He managed a pitiful smile.
"I suppose when one awakens to angel he should assume he has died and gone to heaven." He chuckled despite himself. "I apologize for the poor joke. I don't suppose there is any chance of a bath is there please?"

βYou as well Henryβ she replied βHeβs very well, naturally fitting in well to his new role as Kingβ she spoke choosing her words carefully as she reached for her glass, quickly stopping to look up at Henry to see if her words had any effect on her cousin, a smile slowly creeping upon her face βwe are all very proudβ¦now tell me, are you feeling any better? I heard you were of ill health?β she asked sitting back, sipping on her wine as her gaze remained fixed on Henry βI do hope it wasnβt anything too seriousβ she smirked knowing that the excuse was nothing more than a lie so he wouldnβt have to attend the coronation.
Henry had never enjoyed a verbal duel with anyone, it was not one of his strengths and it always annoyed him to have one when both parties knew the other was lying. What did surprise him was her attempt to mock him, he had expected more from someone sent to "suss" things out. What else could he expect from the bloody girl anyway.
βOh I am alright, just a brief fever, they seem to plague these parts this time of year. I suppose one day Iβll catch my death of them.β He smiled. Her statement that his cousin was taking his duties as King well was easily belied by his sisters own comments on the matter.
βWill your brother be coming to join us anytime soon?β

Nodding Gwendolyn tore her gaze away from Henry's "No, unfortunately the King is rather busy with pressing matters, there's a new ambassador from Luxor..." she explained idly, taking a further sip from her glass before turning her gaze back to Henry "he is adiment that the Luxorian King wants a peace treaty with Avalon" she continued "Personally I'm not too sure that's entirely true" Gwen stated boldly, she wasn't one for loudly voicing her dislike of people yet, Avalon was in her blood, she loved the country with all of her heart and would do just about anything to keep it safe.
Flashing her brightest smile, Gwendolyn looked over her glass at the Duke, then too Katherine and back again "What about you Henry? Anything we need to know?" she asked tactfully, she knew such a direct question would not get him to talk but it may just catch him off guard.
She headed up giving a soft warning knock before walking in and sitting on the edge of the bed offering him the plate lifting a berry off the plate for herself "So what in the world brought you out to your near death? She popped the berry in her mouth as a few of the other inn workers came in to fill the tub she nodded her thanks as they left the room. "While you are washing the sick off you I will bring you clean bedding and find you something to wear until your own clothes are clean again." She arched a brow at him "Willl you need help with the bath..pardon I suppose I didn't even give you my name nor did I catch yours. I am Vivian but most everyone just calls me Vi. And you?"
For this conversation, the Duke had some actual news that he was sure would throw his cousin for a bit of a loop. Hell, it had made him wonder what was going on, or what he didn't know about. He nodded towards the harbour.
"As a matter of a fact, I received word from the Clarkson that the Luxorian fleet has put to sea. He received the information from a somewhat disreputable source so I have asked him to verify it with our own ships. I don't suppose you might have any idea why Luxor has the armada out?"
As he asked the question he suddenly had a horrible premonition that maybe the DeGreys had been more clever than he suspected and had managed to somehow convince Luxor to help rid themselves of the Devalins. That didnβt make sense though, Luxor, for all of its kind words, hated Avalon more then he hated the Degreys.
Thomas Blackthorne
He watched her go, eyes taking in her firm buttocks and shapely legs. He sighed and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. His body was betraying him and it bothered him that he even found himself in this situation. He knew he loved Gwen, or at least he thought he didβ¦
A knock on the door interrupted his musings and he pulled the blanket over his lap just as the door swung open. He smiled his thanks as the redhead offered him a plate of food and tucked in eagerly. Being sick tended to take the strength out of him something fierce. He listened to her as he ate, nodding his thanks at her promise to find him clean bedding and clothes, his own would probably have to be burned he decided.
He laughed when she asked him if he would need help with the bath and shook his head.
βNo, thank you, I think I can manage.β He ate another tomato as she continued to speak, swallowing the last of it before replying. βNice to meet you Vivian, my friends call me Thomas. I donβt suppose you can tell me where I amβ¦?β

Gwen's mouth opened the shut as she was at a loss for words "Well I have to admit this is new information" she admitted, biting her lip slightly as her mind wondered over what this new information, dispatching an armada indicated that they wanted war but then why send an ambassador who was adiment they wanted peace, unless they wanted to surprise attack Avalon and this worried her greatly "No I don't and that's what frightens me..." she stated standing up to walk over to the window and looked out onto the harbor, since the rain had died down she was able to see the vast lanterns at the top of the mast swaying over the waves.
Gwen wrapped her arms across her body as a slight chill rippled through her body "If they are planning an invasion, they won't attack here, last time they sent an Armada they lost over a hundred ships in the Western Sea trying to find Caerwyn, so I highly doubt they will try that again..." she spoke turning back around to look and Henry "No, Its my belief that they will target somewhere like Point Yorkpoint, from there they would have a clear run to the capital with...very little resistance" she spoke playing down the Kings force, true she was worried about the Luxorian fleet but at this present date there was a danger a lot closer to home.

Damn the woman! Could she not see how hard this was for him? Could she not see that all he wanted to do was cancel the whole thing, call his brother home and proclaim her innocent on the spot? She wanted him to judge her on the relationship they had had as children and yet equally expected him to behave as a King. She could not have both and ultimately he was King now and had to act like it. If he allowed her to go free without a trial then it would become known that if you were close to the King or his family then you were above the rules and that was not how he wanted to be remembered. What angered him more than anything was that she had been the one to give him that advice when he was still a Prince and she training to be a knight. Clearly she believed he should keep that rule for everyone else but not for her but in that she was going to be disappointed.
"Quiet!" James barked at Rivera and Emmanual both. "Sir Talimir I asked you here so that you could answer the charges against you. Instead you behave like a foolish child having a tantrum. Yet that is your choice and you have now made it, I will remind you however that our decision has not yet been made and your words could have made a difference."
James was silent for a moment as the anger drained out of him, he felt suddenly bone weary as though he had aged a decade in the last few hours. He looked at Rivera and the sadness and struggle was evident in his eyes.
"You will be escorted back to your cell, the next time you are summoned will be to hear our verdict. If found innocent then you will of course be free to go. If found guilty you will be sentenced as I see fit." James nodded to the guard who bowed and gestured to the door, James waited until Rivera had been escorted out before turning to regard the group.
"Gentlemen, all of the evidence has been examined and the witnesses interviewed, and I for one tire of this business. Are you ready to make a judgement or do you need more time?"
He was oddly relieved when the men shook their heads, clearly they wanted this business done as soon as possible and he could not blame them. He settled down to deliberate the matter intending to not leave the meeting until a verdict was found.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Katherine sipped her drink and eyed her cousin and brother over the rim of her tea cup. For a man who hated verbal sparring she thought her brother was doing rather well. Of course if the conversation continued much further then she may well have to aid him somewhat but then that was why she was present after all. They made such a good team, with him being the mind behind the military strategy and running an army and she being the mind behind the political manoeuvring they also did. It was why he had asked her to go to the Coronation ball and she could not help a sense of pride that he acknowledged her skills in that area. What with their parents never really paying her much mind it was always nice to be recognised for your accomplishments.
She listened as Henry mentioned the Luxor fleet and watched her cousin carefully for her reaction. She was clearly taken aback by this information and Katherine filed that away for future reference. She almost laughed aloud when Gwendolyn mentioned how easy they would be able to reach the capital from Point Yorkpoint. She doubted very much it would be as easy as the chit said it was and wondered if her young cousin was more astute than many thought she was. Katherine leaned back in her chair slightly and smiled at Gwendolyn,
"Oh come no Cousin do not be so modest, I am sure your brother's men could handle anything the Luxorians threw at him. " She said with a laugh.
Vivian sighed as she shut her room's door behind her pressing her back against the door running a hand over her forehead. Her mind raced over the fact she knew the Duke would most likely give a reward for a knight. She took a breath thinking more about her own reaction towards Thomas. She rolled her eyes at herself "he was out in the storm for a girl." Her thoughts kept warring in her head as she tossed herself into her bed tossing a pillow over her head.
