Rivera once again turned down a man, this one a Lord, for her hand in dance. She waved him off with a smile, and made her way through the crowd to seclude herself in a corner. How she loathed such gatherings, where nothing but drunk men ruled and th womne became nothing but eye joys for them. Rivera couldn't help but scowl at the drunkards who came just a bit too close to her safe haven.

To reassure herself, she placed a hand descreetly on her leg, feeling the blade there underneath the numerous folds of her dress. The red, gold, and white fabric rustled as she moved. She hated dresses, and wore them as little as possible. A corination, however, called for one, and so she wore it, no matter how much she was against it.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Hadrian off down a corridor with his sister, Gwendolyn. She had a slight urge to go over to them, but thought better of it, and decided to stay in her corner instead.

Christine wandered through the crowd of people, a slight smirk on her face as she did. Most drunks took it as an invitation, until she scowled at them, which caused some of them to back off quite quickly, scared. The woman was looking for one man, and one man only. Her eyes finally rested on him, surrounded by a throng of people, all congragulating him.

She curtsied to the group, her blonde hair falling off her shoulders as she did so. "My king..." She said respectfully.

Christine grinned at him, her smile full of mirth and merryment. She let him tug her along, closing in on him once the reached the dance floor, her free hand securing its place on his shoulder. "If that is what my king wishes." She said softly.

Rivera looked a litle surprised, but by no means shocked, and sat down next to Arabella. "Oh my dear..." She cast around for some excuse, wanting to protect Bella for as long as possible. "I believe that my friend has no comfort in matters such as women. He is a knight, just as I am, and the only woman I've ever known him to interact with comfortably was myself, and I match his station. I wouldn't trouble yourself over it dear, I'm sure it's nothing." She said gently.

"And there is Duke Huor's estate and land directly east of Ghost's Pass. While he is not a solid ally, he is by no means an enemy, since his daughter is here vying for James' hand. He can be an asset should we need him. So then...are we to go public with our relationship? I agree, the pros highly outweigh the cons." She smiled at him.

Christine smiled as well, standing outside the door to Lelinus' room. Perfect. Everything she had planned was set. She could move forward. With any luck, Rivera would be out of the way, and out of her life, within the month. "So sorry, little sister...but I'm fed up with you." She muttered with a grin as she searched through the drawers in her desk, in the bedroom she had been given for her stay at the palace. There! Four letters, two from Rivera, and two from Duke Huor...well, actually, they were all by Christine, but no one knew other than her. And she was skilled at copying other's handwriting.

No one would be able to tell that Rivera hadn't written these. She slipped them up her sleeve, and began to make her way into the ballroom once more. Her green eyes scanned the crowd for James. She found him, and with a slight twinge of jealousy noted that he was in the company of a woman. A princess, in fact. Christine couldn't remember what kingdom she hailed from, and it was of no consequence. Placing a look of grim horror on her face, she ran through the crowd, bumping into people and pushing them out of her way.

"James! Oh, James! Please, you must come with me quickly! I have dire news that I must share. We should head somewhere private to talk, I do not wish to alarm your guests." She said hurriedly and in a hushed voice. Her green eyes were swimming with tears as she grabbed on to James' arm in a half-hearted attempt to begin pulling him from the room.

Christine entered the room, pretending not to be annoyed with his grumpy disposition. She couldn't be surprised, tha man had drunk like a fish the previous night. She pulled out the letters that she had written all through the night, two of them in the hand of her father, and two of them in the hand of Rivera. "I intercepted this letter this morning. One of the Guards gave it to me, as it was adressed to Lady Huor. It appears t was supposed to go to Rivera. I think you should what the contents are. It appears that Rivera and my father are plotting against you." She said grimly, handing him the four letters.

Current letter

My Dearest Rivera,

I am surprised at your knowledge of palace security, though with you saying that you are bodyguard to the younger Prince, and a knight, I suppose I should not be. The information you have given me is more than enough to mount an attack on the palace. Avalon will no longer belong to the DeGreys. I must thank you for that. I am still in a daze as to just how you survived your kiddnapping when you were only five years old, and how you found out that I was your father. Did you simply just remember? And has palace life been that bad that you would help your father in an attack against them? I suppose it woud come down to family. No matter who you were raised by, those with blood ties will always be stronger.

I can mount a force to move within the month. Stay safe, stay diligent. Be strong, my daughter.

Yours forever and always,
Duke Armond Huor

Christine awaited his reply.

Rivera awoke within Lelinus' arms that morning, unaware of the treachery against her. Even though she awoke, she dd not move. It was comforting to lay there, listening to Leo's even breathing.

Rivera had stood up, listening to the conversation that had transpired between Lelinus and his Captain, as well as the Royal Guard Captain. Only she was charged? And Christine was behind it...Rivera could only wonder what she was planning. Rivera was highly annoyed when three soldiers followed her into her own rooms. "I would suggest you lower your gauze, lest I am tempted to take out your eyes." She hissed at them as she changed out of her bedclothes.

She quckly changed into a set of her riding clothes. Her mind was seven steps ahead of her body, already formulating the beginning of an escape plan should things go afoul. She would probably change yet again should she escape, but that couldn't be on her mind at the moment. She had to put her trust in Lelinus to figure out what was at stake. When she joined the guard and Lelinus in the hall way, her first words to the men who wished to escort her were, "I would advise that you do not touch me, unless you would like your hands removed from your body." Her eyes were stormy, as this turn of events was not what she expected on the first day of James' rule.

Some of the men in Lelinus' guard chuckled at her reproach, and the Royal Guard's obvious fear. Leo's guard had learned fast to respect the Princes' bodyguard and not view her as a woman, or they ended up quickly put in their place. And so the procession began, and when they reached the entrance of the throne room, a group of five Royal Guards and three of Lelinus' men continued on with Rivera to the dungeons. Two Royal guards remained at her cell to guard her, and sent Leo's men away, but not before Edmund, a younger guard, but one who respected Rivera fiercely, said, "The Prince will get this sorted out, Sir. You won't be in here that long."

Rivera smiled, appreciating the comfort. "Thank you, Edmund. Watch over him for me, while I'm not able to?" The young guard smiled, "With honor, Sir." He was then ushered away. Rivera sighed, and began to pace her cell.

Christine wanted to melt into the wall, James' anger was so apparent. She had no idea he would become this agitated. Still, her plan was in motion, and working perfectly. Without a word, she followed James, only saying when they were alone in the throne room, before anyone else had arrived, "What are you going to do, James? I still find it quite hard to believe that someone so close to your own brother would be plotting against you..." She spoke softly, her eyes glistening slightly. "After all, if what she and my father spoke of in the letters is true, then...then that means that Ser Rivera would be my younger sister..."

At the diplomat's comments, Lelinus barely spared him a glance, not having the time or the patience at the moment to play the diplomat at Court, "It would seem that Lady Huor is up to her neck in schemes. She should take care that it is not cut out."

He said this loudly just as he entered the throne room. He met James' angry expression with a fierce expression of his own, "You place someone in the dungeons, someone you grew up with, and you order your own brother to come before you like a whipped dog all on a harlot's words. What a fine reign yours is turning out to be, Brother."

He wanted to say more, but even in his anger, he knew it was unwise to provoke his brother just yet. Instead, he asked, "Am I to be hanged as well? Torched as a heretic? On her word?"

Christine crossed her arms and glared at Lelinus. "You watch your words, it is more than just my words. I have proof in writing as well. You are my sisters' best friend, or so I hear. Surely you of all people could recognize her handwriting? See for yourself just what your little bodyguard has been up to." She told him vehemently. He dared call her a harlot? Not while she breathed. Christine, daughter of Duke Huor, would not be insulted. "And you should watch your tongue against your own brother. One might think you bode him ill just the same."

Her green eyes narrowed as she handed him out the letters. She then resumed her place slightly behind King James, her arms crossed. With any luck, her little sister would be tried before nightfall, and hung before the week was out.

Lelinus couldn't stop the bitter laugh that came with James' pronouncement. He was granted the one thing he had been working at acquiring for these past months and now, all he wanted to do was remain here and defend Rivera from the vipers that sought her death. He looked at his brother wearily, as though this was but a dream and even now, he looked for the dawn to awaken him, but in his heart he knew this was no dream. He must attend to reality, however distasteful it was.

"Very well, my lord King. My bias is suspect, but I admit to that openly. Still, I warn you about hasty judgment and those who would fain to be your friend out of self-interest. Duke Huor may be a popular and respected figure, but he has not the men nor the right by blood to claim the throne and, as a man with more sense than ambition, would not dare assault the capital without aid or justification, nor would he do so secretly. Our father has long spoken of nobles that would declare themselves before attacking and those who would smile and stab you in the back.

"It is the Lady Huor who has most to gain from this ordeal for there have ever been whispers of her parentage being suspect, of her line not being of the Duke's. I do not insult the Lady, I merely report what is said which Lord Westbrook will confirm. If Rivera be truly her younger sister, and the Duke's daughter in truth, that alone makes her a threat to the woman bearing these accusations. And, I have seen these letters of Rivera and her handwriting is cleverly imitated, but I deem it that of an imitator in truth. If you do not believe me, then this will be your proof: Her letters do not bear my seal as they always do, particularly when sent to a noble house, mostly because I keep my signet ring on my person at all times. Lady Huor may be skilled at copying, but even she must have realized using my seal would give away her imitation. The Duke's seal, she may have used her own ring or stolen her fathers. As for the second proof, look at the signature "Lady Huor". Rivera never claims titles she has not been bestowed upon officially and it does bear a resemblance to Lady Christine's signature, no?"

He stepped away, inclining his head to his brother but offering no salutation to Lady Huor, "I shall take my leave as with my Guard. As for traitors, beware our cousin. He did not appear last night and the Court knows it. Farewell, brother."

With that said, he exited his throne room, being met by his Captain on the way. The man looked troubled and spoke, "Your sister has departed for Caerwyn, my lord."

Lelinus cursed, "Right as we do not know his intentions. I pray that she is safe. If she is captured... At least I have forces in the Western Reach. For now, we cannot do anything. The King has gifted me with Ghost's Past and has ordered me there. Have my men prepare to march with a caravan of supplies. At least this fief will allow me to keep an eye on my cousin and that bitch, Christine. As for Rivera... My Guard cannot be seen assisting her if things take a turn for the worse. I pray that Rivera's other friends shall watch over her."

The Captain nodded, already processing his orders, said and unsaid. The younger Prince's guard must not assist Ser Rivera if things went south, but those not wearing the Prince's colors were untraceable.

Rivera resumed her pacing, only stopping when Edmund came back. "Ser, the Prince has been granted Ghost's Pass, so he cannot be a part of the investigation. The Guard shall be going with him." Rivera nodded, smiling slightly. "Yes, I can understand that. It all makes sense. Go, he will be departing shortly." She watched the young knight run off, and then resumed her pacing. There had been a lot unsaid that passed between the two. Deep down, Rivera wished she could see Lelinus before he left, but she knew it couldn't happen. She began to wonder how deeply rooted Christine's plot was, and if she could prove anything at all to James of her innocence.

Christine nodded, "Yes, of course Your Majesty." She backed away, keeping her silence. She had to remember to hold her tongue and keep her story straight. Lelinus had brought some important things to both her attention and to James'.

Emanuel Aldsworth

Emanuel had raised a brow very inquisitively as he heard the news, the councilors were quick to spread their looks and words across the table very lowly and humbly. Shock seemed like the general profession of most of the men seated, which Emanuel himself could completely and quite easily understand. The Bonnie Earl kept his glance at Jamie as he talked. His right pinkie was scratching itself, he was nervous. Every since they were children Jamie would scratch his pinkie when he was unsure or uncertain about it though if he had not know that it would had seemed that Jamie was presiding as though he knew something everyone else did not.

His friend was looking to him, and then he realized why the Privy Council was called for. He looked back to Lady Huor examining her. For a woman that was condemning her own flesh and blood to death she still had a remarkable figure. Slightly he leaned upon his own bejeweled fingers spreading them along his chin as he stroked his well trim beard. "An interesting testimony Lady Huor, I would advise you take a moment to consider if you had left anything crucial out." He prose before he looked over to the scribe in the room "Mr. Secretary, I sincerely hope will take an empathize to record those statements and accounts."

The man paused for a moment somewhat hiding a blush as he continued to write away, a few days prior he had a little rondevue with the professional at the stables. Who knew someone who buried his nose into too many books would be such an... animal. A soft chuckle emerged outward at the thought before he realize he was in a serious setting looking around the strange glances before he returned his attention to the King.

"Lady Huor is now our key witness and should be under the watchful protection of the King until this investigation is fulfilled." He prosed elegantly to the King "I would advise she remain in comfortable Quarters in the Palace under royal guard protection separated from Court so that if there is a ploy at play any other collaborators would not be able to harm our brave testifier." Emanuel had other intentions of course, if she was telling the truth then she would now be assured that no one would touch her, if she was apart of some plot to murder Rivera she would now be as trapped as her supposed sister bellow them though in a more lavish cage.

"Before we continue with questions find this supposed postman, I am certain he will be in town or in the Palace still."

Rivera had said not a word the entire questioning, her eyes merely trailing from one lord to the next, finally rest on James once again as he spoke directly to her.

"This may be your last opportunity to speak."

The words angered her. A part of her wanted to remain silent, and another part simply wished to explain why she refused, and yet another part of her wanted to lash out. It would be the latter to win that internal battle, for better or for worse. Her eyes burning, she glared at the man who stood before her as King of Avalon. She started out in a normal tone of voice, but with each word her voice grew, until she was actually yelling.

"My last opportunity to speak? Truly? So that's how it ends, is it? Is my fate already decided? Why then, pray tell did you drag me in here in the first place? Why should I have to say anything, James?! I grew up with you, you, Lelinus, Arrabella, and Gwendolyn, you have been the only family I've ever known! What would have to gain by betraying you, any of you? Nothing! But I can tell you exactly what she has to gain from it!" She pointed directly at James. "That harlot has plenty to gain from my supposed betrayal and execution, the least of which being your good favor. Are you truly that blind, James, that you would think that I would actually do something like this?"

She finally stopped, her head down, and in a calmer voice said, "You know what? This is exactly the kind of decision you would make. You always were brash, and tended to act on what you wanted rather than what you should do. You want to send me to the gallows? Fine. Go ahead. No, I have nothing to say in my defense, because frankly I don't think it would make any sort of difference. These Lords are all thinking the same thing, it's written all over their faces. Go ahead, write me off to death's door. Frankly, I just don't give a shit."

Rivera could not help the small chuckle that escaped her. "To think that I am related to Christine is almost unbearable. But realizing that I am your only daughter, which puts me in the class of the Nobles I have for so long been annoyed by their arrogance, that's just simple irony there."

She regained some of her composure, at least enough to continue. "I can remember that night, now...for so long I had no idea what had happened to me. When the king's men found me in the stables...all thought I had either been abandoned or kidnapped. I grew up among the Royal family. James and Lelinus are as much my brothers as they are to each other."

She sat down across from him, too tired to stand any longer. "Christine has been trying to secure her place as James' queen for over a year now. She has recently been found to be with child. James' child. However, the new King shows no sign of wanting any woman as his own, let alone Christine. Perhaps she recognized me in court. All I know is that she has framed me for treason against James, plotting with you to overthrow him and his family. It appears she also holds a grudge against you. James will need to know that Lady Huor is not her proper title. I am interested to see his reaction."

She paused once again. "James and his council have already tried and sentenced me. I am to hang from the gallows until dead. The Prince has been sent off to Ghosts' Pass, and will ensure that the Royal Gaurd does not follow me across the border into Edgebrook.

"It is hard to be humble when much has been given to you, a strange aspect of human nature, to be sure," the Duke chuckled before turning serious. Inside, he was grieving for what he must do to one daughter, though not his by blood, to save the other. He pulled a drawer open and studied the official-looking piece of parchment before him, "This is Christine's birth certificate. It proves that her father was a servant working on her mother's parents' estate and will destroy much of her credibility before the Court. Unfortunately, it will also destroy her and I have a feeling that everything she has done will be revealed."

He looked contemplative, regretting what he must do, "Did you know that her mother and I never ceased to love her? She was always to be the heir and we were to send you to Arva for the path to knighthood when you were older. I wish I could have told her that. Perhaps she wouldn't have taken such actions."

Shaking himself out of his reverie, he glanced over at his daughter by blood and smiled at her, somewhat teasingly, "I have heard of Prince Lelinus' bodyguard. I've heard certain rumors about her and the prince. Is he really like your brother?"

Christine's hands shook as she was lead into the throne room. How had this happened? All those years of careful planning...all gone down the drain. It was over. There was no way to get out of this anymore. She felt tired.

Her mind drew a blank when her gaze met James'. She barely registered the question she was asked. She stared blankly at the Lord who had asked her. Slower than time could go, she met each of the gazes that looked at her, finally coming to rest on Rivera.

Her little half-sister. This was her fault. If she had never been born, then Christine would have taken over the Dukedom. But she had been born...Her hands clenched, and finally, she brandished a finger at Rivera.

"You weren't supposed to live! They were supposed to kill you, not kidnap you. I was supposed to be rid of you!"

The room went quiet, all eyes on the sisters. What was that gleam in Rivera's eyes? Pity, sorrow? Victory? Christine couldn't place it. She simply stood, shaking with rage.

"You mean the men who ransacked the castle and took me when I was five? You were nine. You couldn't possibly have been behind that."

"Just because I was a child does not mean that I was helpless. I knew my situation, my station. I knew if I didn't get rid of you then I would never have anything. I would have been cast out as a bastard. Even if the Duke had handed it to me, so long as his true Heir lived, the people would never have accepted me. I would have been overthrown, and you would have been put in my place!"

"So you plotted to have me killed, failed, and now plotted to have me branded a traitor and put to death."

"What else could I have done?"

Rivera looked at Christine sadly. It could have turned out so differently. She bridged the gap between them, and pulled out the daggar she kept sheathed at her waist. She placed the handle in Christine's hand, guiding it up to her own throat, and lett go. "You want me dead so badly? At least have the guts to do it yourself."

Christine stared at her, horrifed. Rivera could not be putting her life in her hands, not after everything she had tried to do to her. She dropped the blade, backing away. "I...I could never--!" She fell to her knees.

Rivera looked down at her, and then at James. "Well, your Majesty?"

At Christine's confession, Duke Huor bowed his head. He had known that Christine was responsible in framing him and her sister, but he could hardly believe that she'd hire bandits to do away with her own sister at such a young age. And yet, there was the anger and bitterness in her tone that brooked no room for lying. His heart broke at the King's sentence and yet he knew he could not argue with him. Her crimes merited his sentence, though it was a bitter pill for him to swallow. He looked at his older "daughter" sadly.

"The people would have gladly followed you as I would never have revealed the truth. I always did consider you a daughter, but your bitterness never allowed you to see that. You brought about your own downfall, Christine. No one else."

Lelinus glanced at his brother, surprised that their plan had worked so easily. He was never sure about going into something when the opponent clearly had the advantage, but Duke Huor seemed as confrontational as his daughter. Speaking of her, he noted how his brother glanced at her. He looked... relieved. That was promising.

"Brother," this time Lelinus gave him a short bow of his head before taking Rivera's hand, "I'm glad you made this decision. Thank you. But there is something I'd like to ask your blessing for."

Rivera let out the breath she had been holding. She'd been cleared, her sister found guilty. She watched as Christine crumpled to the floor, sobbing. Rivera never thought that she would feel pity to one who had tried to have her killed. But she did, and she also knew that she would mourn the loss of a sister. However, these thoughts were quickly put aside as Christine was removed from the throne room, Lelinus' hand closing over hers.

"I'm glad you made this decision. Thank you. But there is something I'd like to ask your blessing for."

She realized what he was going to ask for, her heart fluttering. It wasn't how she had planned it, she was going to ask for a private meeting with him, but she knew she may not get another chance. She glanced at Lelinus, and then at her father, before speaking out. She hadn't discussed this with either of them. "If you'll forgive me for speaking out of turn, I too, have something I would ask your blessing for, Your Majesty."

Theodin made his way through the gates of Caerwyn, The guards going forward to announce his arrival. He was taken through to the great hall, to await for the Duke. Theodin admired the architecture, and thought of his introduction. He turned to the sound of footsteps, bowing his head slightly as the Duke was brought forward. "Duke Henry Devalin, I presume? I am Theodin Redway, Prince of the former land of Pentos. I have come to ask a favor."

Rivera gave a coy little smile at Lelinus' last question. "Of course I will." She replied to him, and then turned to the king herself. "As for myself, your Majesty, I would ask for custody of my neice or nephew. Be it only through our mothers' side, we are still sisters." She paused, looking back at her sister who was still crumpled on the floor. "Unless of course, you had something else in mind for the child."

"Good morrow brother. I am Katherine Devalin and you are?"

The voice had captivated Theodin before he had even turned to look at her. Never before had he been so effected by a woman, and he found himself mezmorized by her eyes, as brown as the soft mane of his destrier, hair almost as dark as the bark of trees. And her lips gleamed like the darkest garnets of him mothers' brooch she used to wear. As captivated as he was, Theodin still mangaed some semblence of composure. He managed to gather himself just before staying silent a moment too long to bow to her, saying, "I, my fair Lady, am Theodin Elindar Redway, the rightful Heir to the land of Pentos, currently occupied by Luxor. I am honored to make your acquentince." His electric blue eyes looked into hers only fleetingly.

Apart of this interaction bothered Theodin. Hehad no business getting wrapped up in some sort of long-shot romance with the Lady of another land. He had more to worry about. Like wresting his homeland away from Luxor.

Lelinus smirked at Rivera's comment. Any other women would either be blushing with all the attention or already scheming about what she would do as Princess. Not Rivera, however and in that, he knew he mad the right choice. At her mentioning of the child, he raised an eyebrow. She did have a right to her as his or her aunt. Perhaps they could send the child to a monastery or nunnery to be raised as a scholar or monk or nun.
