The Kingdom

Avalon is a powerful Island nation, who’s history stretches back thousands of years and the current monarchy can trace it’s family tree back to the original settlers, an exiled King and his loyalists from the neighbouring country of Luxor. These first few turned an untamed island into the most desired country in the world; however this did not come without sacrifice. Many battles were fought on land and sea for power over Avalon, a strategic stronghold for any country wanting to conquer more land, no more so than between the Avalonian’s and the Luxor’s, who’s feud had been taking place since the original settlers and continues onwards, with both armies and navy’s of equal strength a stalemate occurred on all fronts, which resulted in a peace treaty, this has been in place for a hundred years but recently tempers have started to flare once more and both side rebuild their armies for what can only be described as an inevitable war.

The Avalonian’s are very technologically advanced compared to other Kingdom’s in the world, they are the only country who have full use of the printing press and a circulating news paper, they are also very diverse culturally, paving a way for musicians, actors and artists as they find these very important in society. (The time is very similar to the Tudor times in England.)Sport is another major feature of social life, weekly jousting games are held by different noble families, along with hunts, archery, horse races and wrestling. Grand parties are held often nightly at the palace, attended by all those who live at court, here people get very drunk and sleep with people who aren’t their husbands or wives.

The country is divided between two religions and any other forms of religion are deemed unlawful and can be classed as treason if the King seems fit. Both religions believe in the same God and that is why they are the only two religions allowed in Avalon. The difference between the religions is how each side worships the god, one side believed that to worship god you must go to his church every day and honour him living a prosperous and morally correct life, the other side believe that music, dance and fun are the correct ways to honour the god as you are celebrating your creation. The difference in beliefs causes some tension between the two sides and could be the cause of a rebellion as they believe the monarch are too relaxed in their religious views.

The current reigning monarch is the House of DeGrey; they are currently the longest reigning monarch with their rule spanning two hundred years. The DeGrey’s are a family loved by their people, ruling as a just monarch but with a line of adultery and bastard children, many other houses have rivaled their claim to the throne, the Devalin's being he greatest threat. Scandal has constantly been a major feature during the DeGrey’s rule over the years, murder, adultery, treason and torture have all been very present in the lives of the previous King’s, Queen’s, princes and princesses. The crown is passed down on the current King or Queen’s death bed to the child they believe has earned the right; this has always been the eldest son.

Southern Plains: Arva, Port Yorkpoint, Winnfell and Briar

The Capital City of Arva

Image

The city of Arva or The Kings City as it is more commonly known, stands fifty miles inland in the South Western corner of Avalon, surrounded by rolling green hills, colourful fields, dense forestry and fertile farmland, Arva is truly a gem in the crown jewels. Built by the DeGrey’s ancestors upon their exile from Luxor, Arva is rich in history and culture to rival no other and has been the main residence of the royal family for generations. A strategic stronghold for inland advances, Arva has been heavily fortified over the years, not only is it home to the Kings army but the city’s towering walls and high ground make it near enough indestructible as nobody has managed to penetrate it’s walls yet, efficiently protecting it’s thousands of inhabitants. Arva has very defined and consistent seasons unlike other parts of the country, the winters can be extremely harsh, with inches upon inches of snow and bitterly cold winds blowing in from the ocean, a deep contrast to their sweltering summers, with glorious sun and ever rising temperatures.

Although heavily fortified, Arva would be the first major strong hold invaders from the south would encounter and despite being strongly defended, like all places Arva does have its weaknesses and if the enemy found out these weakness they could easily exploit them and then the city would undoubtedly fall not long after. From then on it would be an easy ride to the other major cities of Avalon.

Winnfell Palace

Image

Winnfell Palace a place of splendorous beauty located within the walls Arva, built over three hundred and fifty years ago by the first King Edward DeGrey is has been the home of the reigning monarch for centuries. Towering steeples, white wash walls and magnificent gardens it is truly a prize for the DeGrey party by highlighting their power and wealth. Although not the families only residence it is their main and most preferred one, however it’s beauty could be tarnished if people were to find out the events which had occurred within these walls; murders, adultery, assault, rape, illegitimate births and treachery.

If only walls could talk…

Port Yorkpoint

Twenty miles to the East of the capital city lies a busy harbour city, the main port of trade on the Eastern Coast, the city of Port Yorkpoint attracts many merchants from all over the world via the Eastern Ocean. If you want something you are bound to find it here as wonders from the globe are imported daily. Although Arva’s army is extremely impressive their navy is somewhat lacking and so an attack by sea is a constant threat. The King’s navy, which is a sum of a mere twenty ships to date are all stationed here, guarded by a garrison of highly skilled men as the King knows the importance of not loosing his ships. The king’s flag ship ‘The Phoenix’ is also stationed here, a magnificent vessel with speed and fire power on it’s side it is nicknamed ‘The serpent of the sea.’

Briar

Image

Forty Seven miles North West of Arva lies the furthest city West in the Kings control. Briar is as old as it sounds, built around five hundred years ago the stick stone battlement has been a military town for as long as anyone can remember, located a mere five miles before the boarder to Western Reach the King has recently increased men, weaponry and supplies to the fortress in case war does break out against the West. To the left lies the Roundier Mountain Range and to the right lies the River Genieve (named after the first Queen of Avalon) which leads from the Eastern Ocean and the Port of Yorkpoint making supplies by boat easy, however if the King was to loose the river to the Duke Briar would soon be cut off from the rest of the kingdom.

The Western Reach: Caerwyn, Glyndwr and Emerald Isles

Avalon is a Kingdom of great beauty, stretching from coast to coast with mighty rivers, imposing mountains, vast plains of rolling wheat and people who offer you a friendly greeting and a smile.

To the West of the King’s Court and the Royal capital there rises a ridged spine of mountains. They start far to the north and then race south, ending at the southern ocean. These jagged peaks are cut two passes, the High Pass and the Ghost Pass. Each one holds its own wonders or miseries but it is agreed that both eventually lead to a land likened to heaven on earth. The Western Reach, nestled between the ocean and the mountains is a climate that is kind with long summers and short pleasant winters. It rains four out of every seven days but when the sun does come out, bathing the rainforests in warm rays, there is no land more beautiful.

Set to guard this land with his life, and those of his line still to come, is Duke Henry Devalin. Since the foundations of Avalon his family has been the Western bulwark against pirates and foreign invasion. An impressive navy based out of the Emerald Islands keeps the seas secure while a powerful standing army has kept order and helped enforce the rule of the Devalins.

Many of the Reaches cities lie inland, away from the coast, which can tend to be lined with steep cliffs and dangerous shoals. Here and there however major ports flourish, protected by great citadels that serve to remind all of the power of Avalon should they seek to invade. The greatest of these is also home to the Devalin Family, the fortress City of Caerwyn. Here, in the second largest city of the Kingdom, safe behind the greatest walls in the world, the Duke watches his cousins carefully.

The people of the Western Reach have not known war on their lands for their entire lives. The defensive position of the region makes it very difficult to attack though it is prone to flooding and vicious Hurricanes. The region is also shaken at least once a year by an earthquake, though there hasn’t been a serious one in over twenty years.

Caerwyn

Image

Caerwyn is the heart of the Devalin line. Built in one of the few open breaks in the great Cliffs of Mourn that follow the entire coast it is a city of beauty that openly displays the power of the Devalin family.

Glyndwr

Image

Located in the High Pass, this fortress is the key to the entire southern Reach. To take this town is to command the roads that allow the movement of all supplies and troops. Commanded by a woman fanatically loyal to the Devalin line, Lady Scarlet as she is known, this fortress is in good hands.

Emerald Isles

Image

Beyond the battlements of Caerwyn lies the Western ocean and the Emerald Isles. This series of islands provides safe harbour for the entire Western Armada, a mighty fleet commanded by the Baron Clarkson.

Northern Heights: Starkhaven

Beyond the Roundier Mountain range lies the Northern Heights, commanded by some of the Kings most trusted men it can be a very harsh environment with it’s savage winds, snowstorms and rain it is said that only the hardest of men could live their all year round. In the North summer consists of a few bright and warm weeks a year mainly during the middle months and then rain. Each town in the North is surrounded by tall mountains and dense forests, their isn’t much by means of flat ground and so the North highly depends on the East and South for produce as not many things grow in those parts. The men of the North can be considered to men among some of the bravest and fierce fighters in the Kingdom, having perfected their hunting skills as children in the woods around the towns where bears and wolves roamed free.

Starkhaven

Image

The furthest city North it is fifty miles from the dreaded Northern Sea, built around a hundred years ago by King Harold DeGrey as a string of battlements in an attempt to fortify the North against invaders. Starkhaven was the last to be built but arguably the strongest out of the ten large towns built by Harold as it would be the first encountered by invaders from the North. Now it is under the command of Lord Talmir of Starkhaven and his family.

Gwendolyn DeGrey

"My lady...My lady?"

Gwendolyn stirred in her sleep, the light calling of her name slowly drawing her away from pleasant dreams "my lady..." came another soft call along with a light nudge. "hmm" came the princesses very none committal reply as once again her ladies-in-waiting struggled to awaken the slumbering princess, peaking out from under an eyelid Gwen sighed "what is it Lady Keely?

"If my lady isn't to awaken immediately, then she shall miss the beginning of the tournament." The woman replied in a hastily, although a tone in her voice suggest to Gwen that the Lady Keely was more worried about missing the tournament herself. With a mental roll of her eyes, Gwen's blue orbs met the morning sunshine; the unfamiliar soreness of her neck made her aware of her surroundings, had she really spent the entire night on the couch? Apparently the same thought was on Grace Keely's mind as she questioned a moment later"My lady, you couldn't have possibly have spent all evening on the couch, you could have caught a cold!"

Turning her cold glare onto the woman, Gwen rose from her seat "yes well if you have been doing your duties instead of whoring yourself around court maybe I wouldn't have" her powerful voice echoed around the room. Guilt washed over her seeing Grace's saddened expression at her scolding, with a sigh she placed a hand on the woman's arm, her expression softening "forgive me, I spoke out of turn. Now run along and fetch my dress for today's festivities" she spoke softly.

Grace nodded "as you wish my lady" she replied before quickly scurrying off, leaving Gwen alone once again.

---

Once she had bathed, her aching body quickly became soothed and she found herself beginning to look forward to the days events, more so the jousting, that was always her favourite event or rather more shockingly she was looking forward to seeing Henry competing. Once her hair was dry, her long curls pinned up in bun style and later decorated with her usual silver tiara, Gwen, with the help of her ladies dressed in that days gown.

At last ready, Gwen, not having left enough time for her to eat breakfast, made her way straight towards the tournament ground, people bowing and greeting her as she walked. With the sun high in the sky and the faintest breeze offering relief from the powerful rays, the blonde knew that today was going to be a grand day, she wondered if her brothers would take part? Although in honesty she hoped they wouldn't, she worried too much over their well beings and not to mention James raving temper as he would feel no one was giving him a fair match, but why would they? What would happen if they were the one to hurt the king or worse kill him in a tournament? Well it certainly wouldn't be good.

Approaching the royal box, a fanfare sounded as she climbed the wooden steps, holding her skirts up as she did so. Seeing that James and Hadrian had yet to arrive Gwen took her seat to the left of James, like she normally did as her pretty eyes scanned the crowed of contestants, searching for a pair of familiar brown ones. Yes, today certainly was going to be a pleasant day.

Jade resisted the urge to slap him for demeaning himself as usual. Didn't Theodin know how much he was worth in her eyes? She shook her head and was about to retort when he kissed her and she couldn't help but kiss him back. She wrapped her arms around him and sighed.

"You are too humble," she murmured.

***

Jade shook his head at the lord's humiliation at Rivera's hands. In truth, he deserved everything he got if that was how he was going to try to win. It honestly irked her how men could underestimate women and yet, when facing a woman in fair combat like this, could justify cheating in order to give them the advantage. She waved over at Rivera and Gwen and gave respectable nods to the males of the royal family.

"Rivera is going to win. There's no suspense," she commented with a smile. She was gripping Theodin's arm. The night before had been incredible and she was happy Theo returned her feelings. She would just have to make sure he didn't try to leave her because he thought he was too dangerous for her.

King James

"Tell me again why The King of Avalon is not allowed to participate in either the jousting Laurence?"

The old man sighed and repeated himself for the hundredth time it seemed to his Lord and King. "Sire, you must not be injured. Especially with the Devalins around. "

James snorted and turned away from the man. The old bastard was right of course but the excitement and screams from the crowd made his blood boil. He lived for fighting and beating lesser men. What was the purpose of being a King if you could not show the populace your abilities? He hid his scowl as he made his way up the steps, waving to his subjects as he took the highest seat among his siblings. He turned to where his sister and Rivera sat and gave them both a thin smile. "Rivera. If I'm not allowed to hit someone, do it double for me won't you? It would be even nice if you gave our dear friend the Duke a good jab or two in the next rounds."

He settled comfortably into his seat and scanned for where Christine was, and finding her no where near the area James sat with his siblings a scowl flickered over his face. That matched with not being able to participate in the games was not helping with his current mood. All it would take is one snarky word for either Devalin and James would positively burst.

He would wear the counselor down before the tournaments end. He needed to hit something or he'd end up doing something a bit more drastic.

Henry Devalin

The masses cheered and clapped politely as Henry rode out on his black mare Banshee. The loudest of cheers came from the southern side of the field where his sister and banner men sat. He waved towards them all; one hand placed on the reins in order to keep the skittish horse from bucking him off . He generally didn't joust, but since the tournament was thrown in his sister and his honer, it didn't leave him much room to reject participating.

He patted Banshee's mane, running his fingers through the silky hair. She was a horse meant more for riding and less for letting men with lances charge at her. As he attempted to soothe her, his opponent made his way onto the field. He could not see the face of his foe, and he made no move to greet him. It was just another fool he would crush before meeting and beating the King in the melee competition.

Henry bit his cheek and snapped his fingers. A small squire ran towards him, carrying his helmet in his sweaty hands. He threw the boy a silver and took the helm from him to place on his hand.

"This is going to be an interesting day, take note of that boy."
Henry called to the squire before positioning himself. He was ready for whoever would face him next.

Hadrian

Hadrian had been up for hours, he remembered how his father would always tease the young prince about always being up at the crack of dawn. It was just the way he was. On some level he even believed that if he slept in then he'd be giving up the opportunity to improve himself in some way or something worth while would occur as he slept. Either was Hadrian had found himself up at his usual time. Recently he had been practicing a foreign discipline known as mediation in order to alleviate the stress that plagued his mind and body. Trade negotiations, appeasing the nobility, and doing the majority of his brother's paperwork was taking its toll on him.

After an hour of this activity he moved on to a bit of swordplay in practice for the tournament. As he swung his sword with precise strokes he ran over his list of things to do; making sure his armor was in order, taking Caspian out for a quick run before the jousting began, and most importantly, making sure that James was barred from many of the activities of the day. He sympathized with his brother, but the kingdom could not afford for James to become injured, or worst, killed.

Sweating and breathing a bit heavily, Hadrian looked at the sky and ran his free hand through his short hair. Making his way back over to the rack of practice swords the prince placed the one he was using back into it. Catching a whiff of himself he decided that a quick rinse was in order before he moved onto his next task. It was still early by position of the sun, he had enough time to accomplish everything.
___________________

Armor in place, horse at the ready, Hadrian was calm as he made his way to the jousting field. He had actually been able to watch the beginning of Rivera's match before had to ;eave to get ready for his own. Not many were expecting the prince to be participating but since neither James or Gwen were allowed to participate it had fallen to the younger male to represent the royal family.

"There, there Cass." Hadrian whispered to the stallion, rubbing a hand over the shoulder area. Caspian snorted loudly and shook his head, causing Hadrian to smile. Caspian had been the prince's horse since he was born, a gift from the late king to his youngest son. The partnership between rider and horse had been strong since both were young and Caspian had become excellent in tournaments.

Hadrian took his time getting to the designated area, surveying his opponent form afar before making the other man out to be the duke. A smirk graced the prince's face, though covered by the bottom portion of his helmet. Green eyes watched carefully as Henry got himself in order before pushing down the eye covering of his helmet. His body was relaxed, so Caspian's would be as well, but the moment the signal was given both would be ready.

Christine

Christine bolted up out of her bed, all but running to the adjoined washroom before emptying the contents of her stomach. It took the good portion of an hour before she fit enough to leave the room. Deciding that crawling back into bed would be the best option for her current bout of illness her actions were interrupted by a knock on her door. "Lady Talmir, the tournament will be starting in a few hours. Do you need some assistance getting dressed?"

Dropping her face into one of the large pillows adorning her bed, Christine groaned rather childishly. She had forgotten about the tournament. Taking a deep breath, she lifted her head to reply to the servant woman on the other side of the door. "Yes, enter."

The door opened as the blonde detangled herself from the covers and rolled gracefully out of the bed. The servant stopped in her tracks as she laid eyes on the noble woman; she was pale and her cheeks were a bit blotchy. It was easy to see she was sick. "Are you all right milady?"

Christine gave the other woman a stern look, her blue eyes narrowing. "I am fine and I would appreciate it if you kept your comments to yourself." The brunette woman nodded quickly before silently moving towards the wardrobe in the room.
___________________

It took some time, but eventually Christine was set to attend the social event. Just a few moments ago the color returned to her face and lips, even without the help of makeup. The red gown she was wearing allowed her body shape to be seen but still allowed a little bit of reprieve in the abdominal area. Her makeup was done beautifully, mostly round her eyes to accentuate the natural color.

Besides the incident that morning, Christine felt rather good as she left her room. By the time she reached the field area, there was a large crowd. She clicked her tongue in annoyance, it would reflect badly on her for being so late. Navigating her way through the throngs, she climbed the stairs to the raised area that housed the nobility.

The blonde woman could not see her father so far and wondered if he would be participating. Blue eyes looked to the jousting arena, it was easy to make out Henry with his helmet off and those who lived in the castle would notice that the horse his opponent rode was Caspian, meaning the prince would be his partner for the round.

Sweeping her skirts under her so she could sit down, her eyes moved over towards James. He looked annoyed, angry; probably from the fact that he was not allowed to partake in the events. Christine understood why but his protection was of utmost importance. She continued to watch him, her eyes intense and willing him to look her way, to make him notice her presence had finally arrived.

Gwendolyn smiled as Rivera came to sit back beside her "well done Rivera!" She gushed clasping the knights hand within her own "you are to win the tournament for sure" she smile gaily, returning a small wave to Theodin and Jade as they walked by. Looking around the grounds, she spotted Henry mounting his horse, so he was to be the next competetor? But who would he be competing against?

Searching the crowd her eyes fell upon a familiar horse, Hadrian's horse, oh god, say Hadrian wasn't going up against Henry? Grasping Rivera's hand tighter, she turned hearing heavy footsteps on the wooden steps to see James striding towards his throne, offering her a small smile, she returned gladly although she summoned that his mood matched his thunderous expression. Gwen knew what caused his foul mood, it was most certainly due to the fact that he couldn't compete today. Biting her lip, the blonde looked at James "forgive me brother but I did not believe Rian to be competing today" she muttered her gaze turning back to her brother now mounting his horse.

LORD EDDRICK TALMIR

After his terrible evening, arriving too late for the main events, Lord Eddrick had passed on to the tables occupied by the major nobles, or at least the major nobles who hadn't withdrawn for the night. Sitting in the middle of the night, drinking caraffel after caraffel of wine. At some point, they'd started playing Knights Broadsword. A game where the ultimate goal is to stack up as many silver coins as you can, and then use a small knife to shoot the top coin at the opponents towers. If one hit the other towers, and coins fell off from the tower, one would keep the coins for themselves.
After that it got rather dark, rather fast...

The loud banging was horrible, and unyielding. "Lord Thyros! Lord Thyros, get out of there imediately!"
The groaning from the assembled was a clear sign that the drinking had been going on for far too long. Thyros himself was slumped in a chair, his head nodding slightly at the noise and alarm.
The banging stopped briefly, leaving the room in dead silence. Lord Eddrick sighed in relief and closed his eyes again, slipping into a much needed sleep...

Right until the key dropped out of the door, down on the floor. And another was inserted from the other side of the door. The door slammed open, much to the dismay of the lords slung around in varying furniture.
"My God, I didn't know that there were so many nobels missing... Alright you drunkards! Get out of my pantry!" a small, stout woman shouted, banging two pans against eachother, storming through the room like a mad dog.

Without much being said, the assorted nobles ran like hell's fire was after them, up through the castle to their rooms. Luckily for Eddrick, his room was fairly close, he just had to pass around the servant's dinning hall, and into the room behind the kitchen. A room which'd always been reserved for the northern lords, since it was placed in a room which they were more familiar with. Their own bedrooms in Starkhaven were all located around the kitchen in a circular form, to make sure they would get as much of the kitchen's heat as possible.

In there, his loyal guard captain was waiting, sitting by the wardrobe, as though he'd known it was only a matter of time before his lord would come running to get some nice clothes for the early day events.
"I see you've had a fun night out..." the captain remarked, grinning at him, as he found some clothes for Eddrick to put on.
Eddrick just looked at him, black rinds outlining his baggy eyes. He grumbled something uninteligible, and then pulled off his bothersome clothes, to put on something more suitable for a fresh morning stroll and possibly some sword duels.

Henry & Hadrian

A man designated Hadrian to move forward to starting position. His eyes were fixed onto Henry's frame. The prince had no idea whether or not the duke had any idea who he was jousting but regardless Hadrian was determined to win. A win against the other nobleman would show those in attendance that the DeGrey family was still strong and in a way, it would double as a subtle threat Henry or at least Hadrian hoped so.

The young Duke Henry, with his head held high and his green shield bearing the sigil of his house; a red bear rearing up towards the sky, readied himself for a fight.
Henry gave his mare a small pat on her neck before clicking his heels into her side to push her forward. His eyes glanced narrowly between his visor, staring at the man with the blue flag who would signal for the joust to begin.

"Come on girl, don't let me down now." He murmured, clutching his lance in his hands as a excited tingle shot down his spine.

Caspian let out a loud snort as another man cam over with a shield bearing the red and yellow crest of the DeGrey family. Silence overtook the field at the sight of the insignia, it had not been made common knowledge that Hadrian would be competing. Just like the Duke he secured his gear and gripped his lance with a strong grip. He could feel Caspian ready, the horse knew exactly what was to happen. The blue flag descended and the stallion moved, running towards the opponent heading his way.

The sight of the DeGrey sigil unnerved Henry, though he wouldn't show it. With the King sitting high above the court, there was only one other who would dare enter the battlefield. Hadrian Henry thought, an amused expression forming underneath his silver helmet.

With Banshee whinnying underneath him and scraping her hooves, Henry let out a small whistle to urge his horse on. The thundering of hooves made the crowd leap up in excitement, and it sent the buzzing inside of him into full swing.

As his body leaned forward, in order to meet Hadrians own lance against his shield, he brought his lance forward and unleashed a roar that only made Banshee run faster towards the Prince.

If other's could see the look on Hadrian's face at this moment, the loving and kind prince all believed him to be would appear to be an illusion. His features broke out into anger as he eyes filled with hatred. The match was the opportunity he had been looking for it would seem, Hadrian could have his time to hate and hurt someone else during it, his everything shielded by the thick armor he wore.

His own lance bashed against the Duke's shield and as their horses passed one another. There was a press of pain to his left arm as his own lance bashed just above Henry's shield. Caspian sped down the track, the prince slowing him in order for the stallion to turn around for the next round. His arm that held his lance huts. Damn He thought, he really had been hit, but it would not slow him down.

When Hadrian's lance struck his shield, the force sent him back a few inches in his saddle. Letting out a grunt he shook his head and rammed his own lance towards the ghastly colors of the DeGrey house.

He urged Banshee to turn with a small tug on the reins, but he noticed the horse wasn't as responsive to his touch as she had been minutes ago. He leaned down to glance at her legs, and hissed when he saw a few splinters inside his horses flesh, clinging to her leg as dribbles of blood made their way to the sand beneath her hooves.

"I'm sorry girl, just one more round." He whispered, patting her neck before forcing his horse into a gallop towards the Prince.

Caspian was eager to continue on and once set on the right path, continued on in his run. Hadrian braced himself soundly as he held both his shield and lance in place firmly. He had the feeling of time slowing down as he got closer and closer to Henry. He could feel his lance make contact with Henry's body.

He fell from his horse, the impact of Hadrians lance hitting him spot on between his ribcage. Banshee let out a shrill whinny and rose up, stomping her hooves inches from where Henry now lay. The crowd was quiet for a moment, and then the cheering from the Kings side of the court could be heard throughout the Kingdom.
"Shit..." He mumbled, slipping his helm off and throwing it down somewhere to the left of him.

It took a moment for Hadrian to get Caspian to calm and stop his excited movements. The cheers from his brother's section were the first hint that he had actually won the match. Turning Caspian around to face the field he could see Henry's form on the ground. Hadrian watched quietly as Henry before slowly walking his horse over the his cousin.

It was back to being the charismatic diplomat now that the match was settled. He took his time climbing down from Caspian's back and removed his helmet, setting it on Caspian's sate. The prince moved towards the duke, offering a hand out to Henry once he was close enough.
"Good game, cousin." He announced politely, a large grin plastered on his face.

Hadrian's certainly pleased with himself
, Henry thought as he begrudgingly lifted a hand for his cousin to help him up. Dusting himself off, he returned his cousins smile with a wolfish grin of his own.

"Good game indeed" He replied with equal politeness, though there was a certain edge to it. "I believe I should take some time to look after my horse. I'll be sure to address the King and his court after Banshee is taken care of. Good day." He gave a small bow to the Prince and cringed as he dipped his head down.

I'll be black and blue by the end of tomorrow, I just know it. He thought miserably, not bothering for a second glance towards the Prince as he took Banshee's reigns back into his hands to lead his horse to a healer.

The prince gave a bow back, though his was more like a nod of the head, to his cousin as the other man walked away. Hadrian stood proudly as the announcer walked to his side and an declared him the winner. He looked towards where his brother sat, raising his shield and patting the DeGrey crest the adorned the wood.

[Rivera]

Rivera clapped with the crowd as Hadrian was announced the winner, and she let out the breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She relaxed herself a bit as the announcer told the crowd who the opponents were for the next match. It would be Hadrian and herself. She was about to take the steps back down to the battlement area when a servant appeared with a tray of wine, offering it to herself, the princess, Theodin, Jade, and a number of others sitting in the area. Rivera refused, and the man moved on, and when he got next to Theodin, he said, "Forgive me, ser, but I was asked to give this special to you." He offered Theodin the goblet, who took it, and then grinned as Rivera snatched it from him.

"Please. And who would think you special?" She asked as she drained the goblet. Theodin chuckled. "I'm sure there are a many few fair women who would think me special, my dear. You wound me, giving me so little credit." Rivera snorted, and then proceeded to make her way to the battlements. She saw to it that Lyon was well and rested, indeed, the old war horse seemed eager, almost. Rivera smiled, and then grimaced as she felt an odd sensation. It was almost as if her legs were going numb. She shook her head, shaking it off as being over-excited. After all, it had been a while since she had gone up against Hadrian.

She climbed up onto Lyon's back, and the horse didn't move. Rivera looked down at him. "Lyon, what's the matter boy, let's go." Reluctantly, the horse moved forward. The closer they got to the arena, when worse Rivera began to feel. She felt...overly warm, and her head hurt. She heard the crowd as if far away when they began to cheer as knight and prince stepped up to the arena. Trying to shake off her headache, Rivera guided Lyon to his position, and the horse went, but something was off. Lyon kept wanting to turn around, and it wasn't like him to disobey Rivera.

The cheers of the crowd turned to gasps of shock as the Silver Knight slid off of Lyon, hitting the ground. Rivera was barely even aware that she fell. She was only aware of a curious burning sensation that was slowly spreading its way through her body. What was this?

Theodin had been idly chatting with Jade when the gasps had began, and he turned his head just in time to see Rivera fall. He stood up abruptly, and then turned to Jade. "Jade, go get the healer, now." He didn't say another word as he pushed forward through crowd and then jumped over the railing separating the onlookers and the arena. He was the first person to reach Rivera, and he took off her helm. He didn't like what he saw. "Seven Hells...." He whispered. Rivera's lips were blue, and the white of her eyes were beginning to turn red. Hadrian reached them within moments, and Theodin turned to him, saying "We need to get her in a tent, now. This is no injury. Ser Rivera has been poisoned."

[font=Book Antiqua]Gwendolyn was on the edge of her seat, nails digging into the plush coverings of her wooden chair, Hadrian and Henry in a joust! Seven hells! What was he thinking? Naturally she would support her brother over Henry, he was her husband yet, however a part of her still worried for him, she was just relieved James wouldn't be taking part, even if he wasn't. As their lances lowered, Gwen's breath hitched in her throat, she grasped Rivera's hand , she felt sick to her stomach at the prospect that Hadrian may get hurt; even though the youngest, since their mother had died many winters ago she had taken over that role and so whenever one of her idiotic brother would put them selves at risk, she felt as if she would have a heart attack at the suspense.

The blonde princess was vaguely aware of the sound of hooves pounding against sand, she shut her eyes at that moment, only opening them when a clash of metal and cheering filled the air, a wave of relief washed over her upon seeing Hadrian still atop of his horse, relishing in his glory. A smile graced her lips and her grip lessened on Rivera's hand "thank The Lord" she beamed proudly. Her blue orbs quickly travelled to Henry, just making sure there was no major damage, he seemed fine; Hadrian helped him up and she could only pray that he wouldn't gloat, Henry certainly wouldn't take that well.

As the announcer called for Rivera to enter the arena, Gwen smiled at her best friend "go easy on him Vera" she chuckled, genuinely not being able to call who would take this round. In waiting for the round to begin, the princess took a goblet of wine, sipping it greedily as she watched the court jester with some amusement as he entertained the crowed. The people in the stalls seemed to love him, their laughter almost deafening, still it was good to see the common folk enjoying themselves, with all their hardship the least they could do was provide them with a few hours of entertainment on a regular basis. "Hear thee, Hear thee...the next joust is between Ser Rivera and Prince Hadrian DeGrey " the crowds cheered as two of the courts favourites readied themselves for the joust.

It happened In a flash, one moment Rivera sat tall, relishing in the cheers, the next she lay slumped on the ground, she watched as Theodin raced towards her friend, Gwen going pale by the second, her eyes wide with fear, hushed whispers filled the crowd, Not being able to contain herself Gwen left her seat, leaning over the wooden barrier in hopes of getting a better look, only them did she realise the severity of the situation, a hand flying to her mouth, she gathered her skirts and raced from the royal viewing box to where her best friend lay, dropping to her knees, she gently placed Vera's head on her lap, noting how pale and clammy her skin was and how blue her lips were "Theo, what's happened to her?" Her voice croaked, turning her glassy eyes towards the man.[font]

Hadrian

His win made his chest rise with pride. Strangely enough though, Hadrian felt a calming wash over him. The rush of participating in the tournament kept his mind blank, all that was important was him, Cass, and his opponent. It made him glad that he had been given this chance to represent his family and secretly he took joy in knowing that it was something that James could not do.

Walking Cass back over to side of the arena Hadrian took a large gulp of water that a servant had presented to him. He was not used to wearing the heavy metal armor that adorned his body and it was extremely hot inside the suit. Hadrian wondered how knights wear the dreadful things for such long periods of time, but then again they protected well against attack. His arm was proof of that, without the metal covering the appendage it would have been skewered or ripped off.

Finishing his drink the prince mounted himself on his steed once more, turning Cass around to face the direction Rivera was coming from. It was as though time moved in slow motion though as he watched the knight fall from her horse, her body hitting the ground with a loud thunk. Hadrian felt as though his heart had stopped beating as he jumped from his horse's back and raced to Rivera's side.

He reached her mere seconds after Theo had, the prince sliding to his knees as he brushed his fingers through her hair. "Seven Hells…." He heard the outsider whisper, not really bothering to acknowledge the other man. "We need to get her in a tent, now. This is no injury. Ser Rivera has been poisoned." Now that had brought his attention away from his childhood friend and to the other man.

"Hurry now! Bring Rivera to one of the medical tents!" Hadrian ordered loudly, his eyes fixed on Theo's face. Once Rivera was secure in her transportation he moved faster than he ever had before. "What the hell is going?! What have you done to Rivera you unwanted pest?!" He yelled angrily and for once in his life he didn't care that he was losing his temper, his composure, where the public was able to see him.

Jade felt her body tense. Something wrong was with Rivera. The way she carried herself was all wrong. Too stiff at one point and then too languid at another. It was as if she was sick or....

"We need to get her in a tent, now. This is no injury. Ser Rivera has been poisoned."

Jade cursed to herself. She had grown complacent. She had been distracted by Theo and the night's events and now her friend was paying the price. She accompanied Hadrian, Gwen, and the others as they brought Rivera towards the medical tent. Her pretty face twisted in a snarl.

"Someone did this. They need to die," she said shortly.

[Theodin]

"What the hell is going?! What have you done to Rivera you unwanted pest?!"

Theodin almost winced at that comment. Almost. While Theodin was able to keep his composure throughout his facial expressions, anger bubbled to the surface, his usual tepid and relaxed demeanor quickly turned to one of anger. This however, was held in check by the presence of the crowd as people, both high lords and commoners, began to gather. "I would suggest that you keep yourself in check, Prince Hadrian. I would also suggest that you occupy yourself either seeing that Ser Rivera is being taken care of or finding her assailant. I would say more the former, as the intended target was me." He lowered his voice and narrowed his eyes when he spoke the last sentence, and then backed away from the angry prince, turning to Jade, saying, "Find Lord Calabar. I think it's about time I had a talk with the fat bastard about his loyalties."

He then turned to the princess, whose mere face full of worry and sorrow for her friend and guardian made Theodin's heart ache. He sighed, whispering to her alone, "I must apologize, my lady. There is much that you and your brothers do not understand about me. And it is best that you do not. If you are ever to learn the truth, then this is all that will come of it. I fear that it is now time Jade and I said farewell. I am deeply sorry about Ser Rivera, the blame for that falls squarely on my shoulders."

Theodin couldn't bring himself to say anything else. A part of him desperately wanted to tell her, the prince, and the king the truth, but he didn't dare, not when it meant their lives would be at stake. But then, his reverie and decision-making was cut short at one of the Maesters attending to the poisoned knight came out of the tent, a look of bemusement and sorrow on his face, as he hastily explained to the Prince that as they were unaware of what the poison was, she could not be treated. And once again the anger pushed to the surface, held only in check by his mind. Without a word, and ignoring all protests, Theodin pushed his way into the tent, asking the Maesters aside and sitting next to Rivera's bed-side.

One look was all it took for him to asses the situation. Pale skin, fever, blood-filled irises and whites in her eyes. It was a rather common Luxorian poison, made from a moon flower, and was called the Moons' Tears. He turned to the nearest Maester, saying, "I need water, towels, a knife, and this potion, exactly as I order it." He quickly listed off the ingredients and how it was to be made, the Maesters rushing off to do as they had been bid. The king, Prince Hadrian, and Princess Gwendolyn had all forced their way into the tent, but Theodin flat-out ignored them. He continued to check the fallen knight over, doing all that he could to help her, as her breathing was heavy and labored. What he was really worried about was her eyes. That much blood, there was no way she would come out of this without some sort of damage. At this rate, she was going to lose her sight.

Gwendolyn DeGrey

The court was in chaos since the instant Rivera fell from her horse, hitting the sand with a loud clatter of her armour, as she grasped her friends hand before she had been carried away into the tent. Droning out the worried whispers amongst the crowed "Is she dead?" and "Protect the king" still managed to beat the blockade and she nearly choked upon hearing those words, her knees threatening to give way. As she was about to turn and follow her friend into the tent, she noted Hadrian approaching eyes filled of thunder as he accused Theodin of harming their River, she looked at her brother, her blue eyes shooting him a waring glance, although did not open her mouth, the last thing Rivera needed was an argument when she could be dying. Feeling Theodin's eyes upon her, the princess looked up as he spoke "I must apologize, my lady. There is much that you and your brothers do not understand about me. And it is best that you do not. If you are ever to learn the truth, then this is all that will come of it. I fear that it is now time Jade and I said farewell. I am deeply sorry about Ser Rivera, the blame for that falls squarely on my shoulders." Gwen had been confused and yet intrigued at his words, but shook her head firmly laying a gentle hand on his arm.

"This is not your fault Theodin, but if you know why this has happened i plead that you tell me, if only me, I need to know why this happened to Vera" Gwen stated firmly yet the softness was still evident in her voice "you will tell me later as for now, we must do what we can for Vera." Her words were powerful, yet it took all her strength not to crumble in front of her people, turning on her heel, Gwendolyn hurried into the tent, her golden locks trailing behind her.

The sight before her, broke her heart, Rivera lying on an old cot, her skin was ghostly white, her lips blue, never had she looked so fragile, not since her father had found her sick and alone in the woods all those moons ago. Moving to her friends bedside, Gwen dropped to her knees, grasping Rivera's hand tightly in her own "I'm here Vera, I won't leave you I promise" she whispered lightly in her ear as she brushed the brunette locks from her face "you'll be okay" the princess repeated knowing that the words were really for her own peace of mind, se couldn't live without Vera, she just couldn't.

Jade easily found the fat lordling amidst the crowd. He was just about the only person heading away from the commotion instead of trying to find out more like the average person. Amateur. A proper assassin hid herself amidst the crowd, feigning shock and anger to blend into the populace. Fleeing the scene of the crime, as cliche as it was, was a good indicator that someone knew something. She easily caught up to him, drawing her sword wich she held to his throat before his guards could notice her.

"Milord. I think it is time you had a talk with your betters. Rivera in particular is dying to see you," she told him coldly. The man sweated profusely gesturing at his guards and crying for help.

"Murder! Treason! Get this slut away from me!" he cried, his guards stepping towards her only for Jade to press her blade harder against his neck, causing the guards to back away.

"I would not do that if I were you. Lord Calabar is obviously guilty of something and you may be hanged as co-conspirators or commended for your service to the Royal Family. Or, of course, I can kill you all right where you stand starting with your paycheck and leaving a couple of you alive for the torture chambers. Your choice," she stated softly. Most of the guards backed away. The closest to her gulped.

"W-we don't know anything, milady. We just follow Lord Calabar's orders. We're not political, I swear!"

"Traitors. Why I'll-," he began, only for Jade to bump him on the head, knocking him out. She smiled sweetly.

"I believe you, of course. Poor, simple boys following your master's orders. Now, would you be so kind as to carry Lord Calabar? He is much too well-fed for anyone to carry on their own, let alone a lady," she smiled as the guards picked him up, struggling under his weight.

"Oh, and by the way. If you try anything, I'll kill you," she stated softly as she marched them in front of her, her sword ready, until they eventually reached the medical tent. They dumped him on the ground before Theo, Gwen, and James. She smirked.

"Lord Calabar proved to be a little unwilling."

Hadrian

"I would suggest that you keep yourself in check, Prince Hadrian. I would also suggest that you occupy yourself either seeing that Ser Rivera is being taken care of or finding her assailant. I would say more the former, as the intended target was me." Hadrian continued glaring at the foreigner, but let his hands drop from the Theo's person. "Find Lord Calabar. I think it's about time I had a talk with the fat bastard about his loyalties." Trying to compose himself once more, Hadrian tried to put a face to the name in his anger hazed mind.

Quietly he followed Theodin into the tent that held Rivera. The young looked so different than her usual self, lying on the cot she was placed on lifelessly. Her pale form, her heavy breathing, and especially the bloody-looking eyes were all things that unnerved the prince as he watch Theodin examine her. To see her like this, so weak and helpless, Hadrian had never seen his childhood friend in such a state before. He listened as the other man listed the things he'd need to treat her, anger beginning to bubble in his stomach once more as he wondered why Theo knew how to treat this particular poison when even the royal court's talented Maesters could not.

Hadrian's heart all but broke at the sight of his sister crying over her injured friends prone body. Rivera and Gwen had always been thicker than thieves and closer than blood could be. Swallowing down what dislike he had for Theo, Hadrian moved to his sister's side, placing a hand on her fragile shoulder gently in reassurance.

A moment later though, his eyes were back on Theodin. From the moment the young man abruptly arrived in their lands, Hadrian had always been weary and cautious of him. Trust was not something the prince gave away easily and Theo had not earned the right to have it yet and now considering the current circumstance, Hadrian didn't think the foreigner ever would have his trust. "What does Lord Calabar have to with his?" He asked coldly, eyes still glaring at the Theodin as he proceeded looking over Rivera.

Gwendolyn DeGrey

Gwen felt some comfort as Hadrian laid his hand upon her shoulder, it still amazed her how loyal he was as brother, him and James for that matter, she remembered as a little girl, her friends would always say how horrible their brothers were and how jealous they were that she had James and Hadrian, but she never believed them, she had always thought them horrible for teasing her constantly. Looking back now she realised just how lucky she was, they let her sleep in their bed when she was scared, they didn't leave her side in the weeks following her mothers death, they always put her first, she was lucky to have them both. Placing her hand atop of Hadrian's she placed a kiss upon it "she's got to be okay" Gwen murmured to herself.

"What does Lord Calabar have to with his?" Hadrian's voice caused Gwen's eyes too momentarily leave Vera's unconscious form, confusion written in her eyes as she wondered what the Lord had to do with all this, he had always been loyal to her family, she remembered her father calling him many names over the years, a gluttonous, womanising drunk sprung to mind, but never a traitor. The princess turned her gaze to Theodin, he obviously knew something, she was beginning to think that the poisoning was meant for someone else altogether, one of her brothers perhaps? Herself? The thought was harrowing, they had poisoned the wrong person, the culprit would undoubtedly strike again.

---

Lord Eddrick Talmir

Lord Talmir had awoken a lot later than he had wanted, although after a night of heavy drinking this was expected. The Lord couldn't even remember coming back to his chambers; his stomach churned as last nights mead intake took its toll on his ageing body, with a loud groan Eddrick sat up in his bed, still clad in last night clothes, it took a moment for his mind to process why he was in unfamiliar surroundings, then he remembered, he wasn't in Starkhaven, he was in Arva, with this his mood soured immediately. He hated the South, it was far too hot yet his daughter needed him and so he came. He had to do something to sort out her predicament, he could not have a bastard grandchild. Eddrick Talmir was an honourable man and he expected his family to be also, so the news that his only living child had become mistress to the King shook him to his core, yet there was no use dwelling on the negative the damage had been done, now all he had to do was secure a marriage between Christine and James whilst she was still able to hide the pregnancy.

It was to be a daunting task from what he had gathered, James did not share his fathers loyalty to one woman, he had heard that new King disposed of woman like clothing, so securing a marriage would take all the cunning he could master, especially when he had Gwen and Hadrian against the union. Rubbing his stumbled chin, he thought about ways of getting rid of that problem, Gwen was soon to be married so that dealt with her but that just left the Prince, without being able to come up with a solution Eddrick shook the thought from his mind for now, he would think about that later.

After a quick wash and change of clothes Eddrick left his chambers and walked down to the banqueting hall, expecting to see it bustling with people enjoying their breakfast, instead it was deserted, curious the Lord grabbed a maid by the arm as she walked past "Where is everyone?" He asked.

"All at the tournament milord" she replied quickly.

Eddrick mentally cursed himself, how could he forget about the tournament, nodding his thanks to the small woman, he took off running towards the jousting arena. It didn't take him long to reach, climbing the wooden steps of the royal box, he noted the royal family missing and commotion filled the crowed with loud whispers, with a raise of his eyebrow, he took the seat next to Christine, placing a quick kiss on her forehead "daughter" Eddrick greeted with a small smile "What is happening?" He asked curiously.

From the south they came; as many as twenty horsemen accompanied by spearmen, crossbowmen, men at arms, servants, wagons and others.
Fifty persons all in all rode past the fields; some baring the colors of Avalon, others the great Eagle of Luxor and the white Oak of the De Mandeville family.

It was not every day that a new ambassador was chosen and Nicholas made every effort to make that impression. For five decade now the post of Ambassador had been granted to lesser men incapable of managing their own petty little mud huts let alone the representation of Luxor in Avalon, Nicholas was no such man and he knew exactly what had to be done.

Avalon was not weak, it was a powerful kingdom which whiles it did not possess the same vast colonial possessions the Luxorian Empire now held Avalon was a rival to Luxor and dangerously so at sea.

Avalon was certainly not weak however it was unstable, divided and uncertain. James's hold on the crown was not as firm as the young king supposed and therefor opportunities where abundant for a veteran such as Count Nicholas De Mandeville.

Nicholas smiled briefly; he had been sent to Avalon as ambassador in order to keep him away from the court by a rivaling faction and already he saw great rewards in his task.

"Make way for the Lord Ambassador!" shouted the captain of the accompanying Royal Guards men who had been sent to guide the procession to the capital; the city of Arva.

Nicholas's ship had arrived two days later than expected due to a storm in the channel and from what he had heard he had sadly missed the festivities but may still arrive in time for the grand tournament.

The procession entered the city, while his servants, wagons and some of his guards went ahead to the embassy where they would relieve the pervious staff and redecorate the embassy per Nicolas's preference.
Nicholas in the meantime accompanied by four Royal guards and two of his household knight's entered the Arena; Nicholas hoped he had arrived in time for first impressions where often lasting ones.

"Announcing the The Right Honorable Count De Mandeville; Grand Master of the Octavian Order, Conqueror of the East, Vanquisher of the Ostran hordes, Galmarian Clans, Republic of Kirasongal, Kingdom of Pentos, Filimari Dominions and the Silkarth Empire, Knight Defender of Luxor, Lord Ambassador to the court of Avalon"

Nicholas entered and searched for the Royal box, he would have to remind his knights to avoid using his full collection of titles since in Avalon there was a marked distaste for conquerors.
