The shah expected her to sulk, grow surly, or even argue more. What he wasn't expecting was the tears to freely flow, unhidden by her arm as she often did when she felt like crying before others. Tavyna's voice was quiet, not her usual strong and confident air. The man looked at his daughter with disbelief and shock. She seemed so sincere...and he wanted to believe her. But then....how could such an esteemed member of court be a liar?

"Tavyna..." he began again, voice softer now. All words were cut off as she gave him a gentle peck on the cheek...just like when she was a child and he would tuck her in at night, him kissing her forehead after she kissed his cheek. His eyes were fixed on his daughter as she headed out the door, eyes widening and mouth agape as he heard her confirm that she still loved him. Neither he nor Tavyna had told each other they cared or loved the other in a long time.

The shah stood, about to call out to his child, the look in her eyes burned in his mind. But she left before he could gather the thoughts, and the man slumped back down onto his cushions. With a heavy sigh and a troubled mind, he rested his face in his hands, then ran his fingers through his greying hair.

Nassir was scwling once more, standing in front of Tavyna as she walked away. He swiftly established a connection, touching his hand on her shoulder. He remained invisible, but didn't evtend it to Tavyna this time.

"The hell do you mean, you have no witnesses? You have a witness, why did you say you didn't? Stupid!" he snapped, his 'connection' assuring no one but Tavyna heard him.

She frowned at the djinni as he spoke to her, his hand on her shoulder so that he could talk only with her. The princess swiftly entered her room and closed the door before she answered him. Turning around she shook her head at him. Sighing softly she reached up and let her hair tumbled from the clip that was holding it all. Brushing her fingers through the loose strands, she answered him softly.

"How am I to tell my father that I have a djinni as my witness? There were no others, Nassir. I won't put you in that kind of predicament. It's bad enough that Kevah knows you exist. What do you think my father would do?" still shaking her head she turned and seated herself upon the stool next to her vanity. Taking a brush she began running it gently through her hair.

"He would most likely have me get rid of this ring and then what would you do? Not only would Kevah search for you -and most likely find you- but you wouldn't have a chance at being freed. Besides, I can figure this out well enough," she said with a smile at him. Mostly she was trying to convince herself that she could, but what else could she really do? Tavyna would figure it out, but would it be in time? Or would it be just short of her having her life dangled before her fathers eyes... Taking a deep breath she cleared herself of the depressing thoughts.

Nassir growled, taking the brush from Tavyna's hand and brushing her hair instead. The mirror reflected the scowling djinni, a flash of amber registering for just a second. The fury passed, dark hair swaying as he shook his head.

The male sighed, at least somewhat mollified that she was trying to look after him. The feeling of being worried and fretted over was both heartwarming and irritating. An odd mixture. Only half realizing it, Nassir allowed a touch of magic into the brush, leaving her hair luxuriously soft and clean looking, and yet not wet as though she just washed it.

Looking thoughtful for a minute, Nassir held out a hand, impatience on his features as he wagged his fingers in a gesture of 'come on'
"Give me an old piece of jewelry or an old ring you don't care about if it's tinkered with. No one but you knows what my vessel is. Besides, what can your father do to a djinn?" Nassir argued, arching a brow and giving Tavyna a skeptical glance. It was almost insulting, really.

Tavyna startled a bit as he pulled the brush from her hands and began working on her hair himself. A deep blush coated her cheeks and she tried to hide it even though the mirror was right in front of her. Glancing upwards, she noted Nassir's scowling look and the flash of amber before his gaze returned to it's normal color. Was he angry with her? She bit her lip a bit as he worked through her long locks.

The touch of his hands on her head and through her hair was rather relaxing as she waited for him to finish. Every muscle seemed to loosen up the longer he worked her hair. After a moment, she realized that the long dark locks seemed to look cleaner than normal. Her eyes widened a bit. Had Nassir done that? She smiled as she drew a hand full of finished hair to her nose and took a deep breath. The strands felt so soft. Tavyna laughed a bit.

"For an irritated djinni, you have such a sweet spot. Thank you." she teased, glancing up at him with her hair still up against her nose. Her lips curled into a grin as she watched him carefully.

She did as she was asked though, waiting for him to register her teasing him. Looking across the vanity, she spotted an old ring that she hadn't worn in ages. It was still in rather good condition, she'd just not worn the jewelry in so long. A single, dull gray stone sat upon the ring. Picking that one, she gave it to the djinni wondering what it was he was going to do with it.

She turned to face him as she gave him the ring, "That's true enough, but what do you think he would do to me? You can't do much if you're under the rule of someone else now can you?" Even as she spoke, she had hope for what he was going to do, a bit of an idea popping into her head. She could almost tell what he wanted to do with the ring, "You're going to make it look like this one aren't you?" Tavyna continued, pointing to Nassir's vessel that was resting on her fore finger.

Ears burning red, Nassir twitched at her thanks and her lighthearted teasing. To think this woman had been crying not five minutes ago? "The hell are you grinning at?" Nassir grumbled, poking Tavyna in the forehead. "Don't laugh at me...stupid..." he muttered, looking away as he took the ring, clasping it carefully in his hands.

The male's hands emitted a soft glow as he worked, molding the ring in mere seconds. He slowly unculred his fingers, the replica of his own ring lying in the palm of his hand. "Don't touch. It's warm at the moment. And yes, obviously." Nassir quirked a brow, something akin to a smirk lighting his face.

"Not too shabby shahzadi. Smarter than I gave you credit for." he admitted. He wasn't about to suggest he'd been impressed by her multiple times by now. But he figured this one admission of competence was accaptable enough to grant her. He busied himself with cooling the ring- a feat that also took mere seconds with his speed.

"There you go. The only difference is this one has a shade darker of a blue. No one will know which is the original. If you wear both, wear mine with the stone side down in your palm."

Twitched as he poked her forehead, but she smiled anyway. It was sort of cute the way he was poking her and speaking to her in that way. It was also the first time she'd noticed that his ears were a bright red color. Tavyna giggled a bit, keeping the fact to herself that she'd noticed his embarrassment.

Nassir opened up his hand and a replica of his ring lay in his palm. Tavyna, curious in every aspect of the word, leaned forward like a kid and reached for the ring in his hand only to be told not to, "Don't touch. It's warm at the moment. And yes, obviously."

She glanced up at him and then grinned as he complimented her, "Oh my... a compliment. So sweet of you," she teased again. Goodness what was wrong with her...? She was feeling so giddy right then and continually teasing him was making it even worse. She had to stop. It helped a little bit when he finally handed her the ring.

Tavyna frowned a bit as she took the other ring in her hand. If she wore his with the stone side down surely someone would notice, especially if they were paying any attention at all. And if there was anyone like that, it was certainly Lord Kevah... Tavyna sighed a bit. She supposed she would just have to be extremely careful around that man. Then a thought occurred to her.

She'd been wearing his ring for quite some time. To suddenly turn it around would be detrimental, at least she thought so anyway. What if she wore the fake ring around her neck and 'attempted' to hide it? Or maybe the other way around?

"Nassir, do I have to be wearing your ring in order for you to be out and about like you are? Could I hang it around my neck and wear this ring instead as the decoy?"

Nassir's eyes twitched as Tavyna giggled at him. Such nerve this human had! He said nothing, simply scowling at her as she did so, still grinning up at him no less! the male rolled his eyes at the girl, obviously teasing him as he complimented her.

"Idiot. Don't get used to it." he muttered, arms folding themselves indignantly over his chest, avoiding her eyes for the time. His ears insisted on remaining red for a few more minutes, only fading as they got back to the matter at hand.

Nassir looked serious again, shaking his head. He was a little concerned about how to go about this, but he hand no other choice.
Placing his hand upon her shoulder, he spoke the next part only to her in her mind, not taking any chance of being overheard. ~Wear the real one on a chain or something, hidden under your clothing. The fake can be on your finger. You do need to have my ring in your possession. Technically, that can mean your room so long as the item belongs to you. But if anyone else picks it up, they can keep it and it would become theirs.~

Tavyna took the ring that was his from her finger and eyed it carefully. A lump began to form in her throat as she stared at the thing. Should anyone else touch the ring, she would lose Nassir. Her heart skipped a beat as she eyed the ring. She couldn't really bear the thought of losing him, even though she was going to free him and never see him again. Tavyna flicked her gaze up at him before looking away.

She blushed a bit, recalling when she'd almost confessed her budding feelings earlier, before Lord Kevah had stormed into the room and interrupted her. She wondered if she could possibly get the courage up to try again. Tavyna sighed and pushed the ring back onto her finger, worry about loosing it putting her on edge about putting it around her neck.

"Nassir... have you ever... been in love with someone?" she asked, her eyes cast down onto the vanity that she sat next to. Her finger traced circles around the wood. Why was she asking him such a question? She blushed a bit. Starting up that kind of conversation with how she felt probably wasn't the best idea... still maybe the question wasn't all that great either. She frowned a bit as she waited.

Nassir had by now resumed his floating cross-legged in the air, quirking a brow as he caught a glimpse of Tavyna's flushed cheeks. Was she embarassed or upset with him? What had he done? Looking closely, she didn't seem upset so much as just..shy? Embarassed? It was somewhat hard to tell.

Deciding he would simply bother the human some more, he stopped, her question completely unexpected. Unexpected, and unpleasant. Sinking to the floor in his still-seated position, the djinni frowned, glaring at the ground with eyes flickering to amber. His tanned fingers curled into fists, an unreadable expression in his face. Had he ever been in love? He wasn't sure anymore.

"I was...or so I'd have thought..." he began, voice hard, hissed through clenched teeth. "Seven centuries ago..."

Instead of the common regret, sorrow, or fondness one might display when recalling a late loved one, Nassir's body language was tight, tense. His expression filled with hatred.

Tavyna's heart clenched as she listened to the hard words that slipped from his lips. The princess watched him as he crossed his legs and sank to the floor. He looked... angry, hate clearly written on his face as he spoke. Her mouth was dry and her throat was tight. Was it... could it be?

The one he'd been in love with so long ago... was it that this person was the one who had sealed him? At the thought she released a heavy breath, her face reflecting her immense sadness. Perhaps she really should not have asked, and perhaps she should shove down her own emotions towards him, locking them in a solid box that should never be disturbed.

Her fingers clenched together as she sat there. Her purple gaze dropped to her lap and she bit her lip to keep from crying again. Goodness she was certainly crying a lot lately. She wasn't entirely sure what was wrong with her. Shaking her head a bit, Tavyna muttered softly.

"I'm sorry..." she was almost a hundred percent sure that her earlier thought was accurate and therefore she didn't wish to ask anymore on the subject.

Even so, she was slightly happy that he had fallen in love once, which had given her hope. However, with the look and feel of his anger she'd just received, she was sure that he could not do so again after such a thing.

Nassir seethed inside, nails digging into his palms until he broke the skin, trying to control himself. He recalled it as though it had just happened. He swore to forget it, but he could not.

"I trusted her...actually thought she was protecting me. I should've known as soon as I told her what I was." he began, not even realizing he was speaking aloud. He hardly registered Tavyna as he reached for something to crush, the only thing he knew he couldn't destroy being his cuffs. He gripped them by some miraculous willpower, instead of crushing something or someone.

"I trust her, and she brings me to a damn sorcerer!! I'd have followed her to hell and back, and she pays for me to be caged to that ring! That damn ring so I'd be shackled to her!" Nassir stood, eyes glowing amber as he paced like a caged tiger. "I'd have given her anything she asked, and she throws me to the mercy of some filthy magician to be his attempt at binding!"

Nassir growled, voice growing louder by the second, and soon he'd be heard through the walls of the bedchamber. His form shifted into the blue-skinned marid, his emotions running haywire, his anger overwhelming .

"And to smile at me as though it's all grand and wonderful?! She may as well have been a witch herself! I would've done anything for her if she just asked. She only had to ask me!" Nassir flung a pillow against the wall, panting as he sank back to the floor, gripping his head and fighting the burning in his eyes. The burning, prickling of tears threatening to fall.

Tavyna had known that the moment she'd asked, and his angry voice had answered, that the question was something she should not have voiced. However, though she'd apologized, the words fell on deaf ears as he recounted the horrific event, to which she'd figured was what had happened. Her heart pounded so hard in her chest she feared it would break through the cage of bone surrounding it. Her hands clenched tighter and pulled up to her chest, right over her heart.

She jumped as his voice sharpened, grew louder and he gripped his cuffed hands tightly. She jumped again when he stood up suddenly. One hand fell back to grasp the edge of her vanity while the other trembled over her heart. Tavyna watched him, fearful and in shock at the raging emotions. His voice was beginning to get so loud that she feared the guards in the halls would hear his disembodied voice vibrating from her chambers.

"Nassir!" she called, her voice trembling, hardly rising at all to try to capture his attention. She was partially afraid that if she did gain his attention his wrath would be turned onto her, something she didn't particularly want to experience.

For a third time she jumped, this time a gasp filling her voice as he threw a pillow at the wall. Tavyna half expected the pillow to be charged by his magic and cause some damage, but the square bag of fluff only bounced off the wall and plopped onto her bed. He dropped then, his chest heaving as he lifted both hands to grip his hair tightly. Slowly she stood up. Her fingers stretched outwards towards him, heart still pounding furiously.

"Nassir..." She couldn't stop shaking as she gingerly approached him. When she was close enough, she reached out with her hand and touched his arm ever so gently. With ease, she moved her fingers upwards to rest onto his shoulder then finally across his back as she leaned forward and barely touched her forehead to his arm.

"I'm sorry," she said again, "I realize now that you probably haven't believed a word I said about freeing you, but... I will. I promise you I will see you freed. I will do anything, anything to free you. Should it cost my life, I would still do it. I swear it, on Allah, I swear it. So... please, don't be angry anymore," the last part she whispered, hardly breathing out the words as her fingers across his back curled in tightly, her nails biting into her skin as she still trembled.

Nassir was quiet, his blue skin and white hair changing back to dark, the man curled up on the floor when Tavyna's soft voice finally reached his ears. The touch of her hand on his arm earned a flinch of surprise, but he did not retaliate or pull away from her.
Her warm arms around his shoulders were trembling, and the male vaguely wondered if she was scared of him now. Probably. And as such, she wouldn't be likely to want to deal with him or talk to him as much. For some reason, he felt a bit..dare he say...disappointed by this?

Feeling her breath on his skin, Nassir focused his attention on her breathing as she spoke. Sorry? Why was she sorry though? Nassir was deathly quiet, until he shook his head.

"Don't throw your life away so easily.....and don't swear to that. You've done more than any human has before...I have begun to believe you, bit by bit." he murmured, biting his lip as he rested his head against Tavyna's shoulder, slowly daring to relax.

A soft 'tink' could be heard, the sound something akin to a bead falling onto a hard surface. On the floor beneath them were several pale blue 'beads' about the size of a wrinkled, dried pea. They were tiny stones; shiny as gems, round as a marble, and smooth as glass.

She grit her teeth a bit as he leaned against her, his words echoing the room softly. What life would there be once you're gone? she thought to herself, a bitter taste in her mouth and a pain in her chest. She let out a soft sigh, enjoying his warmth for the moment. As long as he was there right then she supposed it was alright.

The sound of something hitting the floor caught her attention and with a bit of unwillingness she moved to see what it was, slipping out from under his head. She gazed at the floor where several pale blue beads were rolling. Glancing over to him, she raised an eyebrow. She was unable to see his face because of the way he was bent over. Reaching out she took hold of one and examined it.

"Nassir...?" she called, the question within his name.

Nassir didn't look up for a moment, one more stone falling to the floor. He was quiet, taking a deep breath and making sure he was once more composed before daring to glance up.

"One of the only ways humans tend to find out someone is a non-human...their tears will never be the same. I'm loathe to admit it, but...those are tear gems." he explained softly, looking both annoyed and embarassed. His expression resembled a child being scolded by a parent.

Nassir simply sighed, closing his eyes as he leaned against Tavyna once more, ears burning red.
"You're pretty comfy..." he muttered, needing an excuse, a reason to justify his actions, even though a nagging in the back of his mind wondered if that was all it was.

Tavyna gazed at the little gems that had hit the floor. They were beautiful, in a sad way. She would have said more, but he gave a sigh and fell upon her shoulder once again, uttering the words 'you're pretty comfy' as he leaned on her. Her face flushed as she glanced down at him, noting that his ears had turned red too.

Tavyna wanted so badly to tell him what she was feeling, but she feared the outcome too much. Even though it had been centuries for him since that woman, it probably only felt like yesterday to Nassir. So, Tavyna kept her mouth shut as she allowed him to rest on her. However, she'd resolved to keep it to herself forever. It was better that way. Keeping Nassir at a distance would be easiest for both of them, at least that's what she believed right then.

After a while, she slowly shifted her body, "Hey, I'm not a pillow," she teased lightly, but was a bit sad that she wasn't going to let him lay on her for much longer. She longed to rest on him, to have his arms around her like a lover but pushed it aside, "Besides I still have stuff to do. I got to go back into town, to the library."

Pointedly ignoring the human, Nassir adjusted with Tavyna, closing his eyes as he rested on her shoulder. Deciding he wanted to lie down for real, the djinni moved his head to the princess's lap, fingers laced over his chest as he lay on his back. He looked in no hurry to go anywhere.

"Feel like a pillow." he mumbled, slowly beginning to regain his usual composure, ears no longer red. Opening one eye, Nassir glanced up at Tavyna, silent for a moment. "You've had a long enough day. Rest." he insisted, closing his eyes once more.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With a bow to the shah, the guards stood and followed those already in service to the grand king and his household. An attack had left empty spaces in the ranks, and the shah was only too willing to make sure his daughter was safe. Nothing seemed wrong with thiese new additions, and they would, of course, be watched for a while before completely trusted without going in pairs with the more senior members of the royal guard.
Tavyna's mouth opened and closed in silent rejection as he moved with her and then suddenly was upon her lap. The princess watched Nassir with her face flushed as he lay there. He'd obviously regained his normal diginity as he looked up at her with one eye silently. He told her to rest, that she'd had a long day.
True enough.
Tavyna frowned a bit as he closed his eyes again leaving her to sit there with him on her lap. She wondered briefly how she was going to rest when they were in such a position, but then decided that it was alright, so long as she didn't sleep on top of him. It would be bad to have someone walk in and see her floating a few inches off the ground randomly.
So the young princess decided that her best bet was to just lean against her bed, her arm lifted up to cradle her head amongst the fluffy sheets of the mattress. His warmth spread from her legs to the core of her body, keeping her very comfortable amazingly enough. As she rested her head, shifting around a bit, Tavyna felt weariness taking over. It had indeed been a long day, one filled with much stress. Slowly her eyes closed as she drifted off to sleep. Her last thoughts were that Lord Kevah hadn't come to see her in quite a while, something she was thankful for. Hopefully he would not come for some time, giving her the space she needed.
With that, Tavyna settled in and was fast asleep in mere minutes.
Nassir awoke several hours later when it was finally dark outside. The chill of the desert air at night was significantly different from the daytime climate, and Nassir felt something was missing. Ah yes, a sheet. About to sit up, he recalled the 'pillow' he was laying on, and glanced up to see she had fallen asleep as he suggested. Good human.
Although, Nassir couldn't imagine it was the most comfortable sleeping position.
Moving carefully, Nassir was once more glad of his super human abilities and physical prowress. He gingerly scooped Tavyna up, placing her on her bed and draping a silk sheet over her. There, better. Even if being sick would keep her from going out into trouble, it could invite just as much. Somehow, Nassir had managed to keep from waking the shahzadi.
Glancing at his pillow fort, Nassir seemed to hesitate, debating on wear to sleep. the cushions were nice, but he felt unusually...chilly. yeah, chilly, not clingy or vulnerable at all. He was a powerful djinn for heaven's sake! And no human was going to make him stupid.
Floating over the bed, Nassir gently lowered himself to the foot of the bed, curling up like a dog. He kept telling himself he was simply sharing body heat, keeping to one side of the bed.
----
By the time the sun began to peek through the stone window, Nassir was asleep once more. At some point during the night, he had opted to use Tavyna's belly as a pillow, one arm found itself flung carelessly over her.
"Tavyna! Get up get up! You have a big day today!" chimed Shirin, the older woman allowing herself into the princess's chambers.
Tavyna started awake, her heart jumping as Shirin's voice shattered her eternal peace. She would have sat upright completely as the woman entered the room without waiting, but found that she couldn't because of something very heavy and very warm. Her gaze shot down to her stomach where she found Nassir sleeping comfortably on top of her. Her face flushed deep scarlet red as she lay there, eyes wide. First off... when had she gotten onto the bed? Secondly, when did he start using her as a pillow??
Shirin strode to the window where she drew back the curtains to let more sunlight in and began working her way around the room to gather things up and get ready to help dress the princess. Tavyna's heart pounded rapidly in her chest as she quickly tried to disentangle herself from the djinni without making it too apparent that something was sleeping on top of her.
"Shirin," Tavyna answered, a bit groggily as she finally managed to get herself off the bed and stretch, "What's going on today?"
"Come here, come here," the woman beckoned, obviously in a hurry. The princess did as she was asked and sat before the woman as she began doing up Tavyna's beautiful long hair. For a brief moment the nurse maid paused in her work to inspect Tavyna's hair, "You're hair is so beautiful today. Did you do something to it?"
"Eh? Uh... not really... I just brushed it before I slept," she lied, her cheeks turning a bit pink as she remembered Nassir brushing her hair gently the day before.
"Well, you should do that more often. There we go," the woman announced as she finished twisting it up and pulling some of the locks of curls from Tavyna's face. The elder maid whirled around and strode across the room to gather up a silk dress from the vanity for the princess to wear. She came back rather quickly and soon Tavyna was all wrapped up and ready for whatever it was that was going on.
She glanced over to the old woman and lifted an eyebrow as she asked, "What's going on Shirin? Surely Lord Kevah isn't wanting to have breakfast again..." she groaned a bit, "And certainly not with me dressed so extravagantly..." she continued as Shirin ushered out the door and into the palace halls.
"We have a guest today! Let's not keep him waiting!" Shirin urged, looking almost flustered as she ushered the princess from her chambers, the currently invisible djinni trailing behind with an arched brow.
The guards followed without a word, Shirin checking over Tavyna's appearance once more, making sure the lady was presentable. This visitor to the palace was an even bigger fish than Kevah.
"The neighboring malik's son, prince Shahin Mirza, is here for an audience. For once, shahzadi, act according to your position!" implored the nursemaid, knowing this would probably fall on deaf ears. Even so, she had to say it, and maybe, just maybe her princess would listen. Deciding she had done her best, Shirin said no more, leading Tavyna and her guards into the dining hall.
The shah and Lord Kevah were already present, as well as a dark haired man adorned in gold and dark blue. The three males looked over as Tavyna entered, each with a very different expression. Her father looked less gruff, eyes contemplative and distressed, though he hid the sign of weakness. Kevah looked positively livid, his expression that as if he had swallowed something foul and was trying to not say something.
The visiting prince looked almost bored, arching a brow at the arrival of the shahzadi, but made no other move to indicate he even noticed her. The atmosphere was unsteady, almost tense in its uncertainty.
"Tavyna. Come, we have guests." her father instructed, notably less stern than the days prior. With this, the shah lowered himself onto a cushion at the table, promting the others to as well. Since the arrival of the mirza, Kevah's seat was moved further from the head of the table, the seats closest to the emperor to be occupied by his daughter and the prince.
Nassir sat beside Tavyna, eyes narrowed as he suddenly stared at the prince. Something was off about him.
**shah/shahanshah= emperor, or 'king of kings'
**malik=king
**mirza is a term referring to a prince, titles often attatched to the name
Oh no... not another one... Save me Allah, please, she thought to herself in distress as she listened to Shirin explain the situation. There was yet another suitor for her and this one was even more dire than the last. This one was a mirza.
"The neighboring malik's son, prince Shahin Mirza, is here for an audience. For once, shahzadi, act according to your position!" Shirin begged and the princess clenched her teeth. Tavyna tried to keep the heavy sigh to herself, though it did slightly slip from her lips as she followed after the elder woman. Her heart clenched tightly as she entered the dining area where her father awaited them. She really didn't want this, she had enough on her plate as it was.
Glancing over her shoulder she noted that Nassir had woken and followed after them. It was at the sight of his presence that she sort of calmed down. For a moment she seriously considered asking Nassir to take her far from the palace where they could be left alone in peace. The thought was quickly dashed though as she knew that it would be impossible and that she had also promised to free him. The princess wasn't about to go back on her word at all. Which meant that in order to be able to free him, she needed the cities libraries to study.
As her gaze settled on the new comer, she frowned heavily under the veil that covered her face. She was sure her eyes reflected her dislike. Tavyna didn't like the way he acted. Sure she was slightly happy with the fact that he didn't take any interest in her, but then on the other hand she didn't like the implications that sort of attitude implied. He was obviously there only for the power of the position, which was what Kevah was there for as well. At least that man had a mind to hide his greed behind carefully flowered words and pretenses.
Tavyna wasn't sure which one she preferred, the pretended attraction, or the obvious disdain.
"Tavyna. Come, we have guests." Her fathers voice brought her out of her musings and she only nodded in acknowledgment to his statement. The silence was deafening.
Seating herself, she felt Nassir sit beside her. Once again she was settled by his proximity. When was it that she'd grown so used to his presence? So safe feeling and... comfortable? Tavyna sighed inwardly. If only it could stay that way. She looked around, noting how Lord Kevah was not looking very pleased with having lost his position right across from the princess and right next to her father. The man kept sliding icy glares over to the prince who looked even more bored and irritated than before.
Tavyna couldn't help it any longer as she sat there, tired of the unending games that wrapped around her everyday life, "I cannot help but notice the look of irritation upon your face, Shahin Mirza. If you dislike the situation so, then why are you here?"
Nassir managed to keep his mouth shut, glaring at the two men across from the princess. As bad a Kevah was, this newcomer seemed far more suspicious. Nassir seemed to scrutinize and appraise the male from his position, gripping Tavyna's hand under the table. He was so caught up in watching the prince like a hawk, he even failed to notice the olives served alongside the cheese and dates being presented.
At least Kevah was turning a satisfying shade of livid red.
The shah looked up, preparing to speak, when his daughter beat him to it. He felt like scolding her for an instant, but recalled the night before. Besides, she seemed to be controlling herself, at least as much as she could manage. She hadn't deliberately been rude, so he decided to let her go for now. Interestingly enough, the princess asked about the male's presence before the Shah got to it.
Turning a cool gaze to the veiled royal, Shahin arched a brow ever so slightly. "I'm here to discuss trading between our lands. Surely you as shahzadi would participate in the proceedings later on as a member of the court? If you are merely interested in a perspective groom worthy of you, then I suppose I should apologize for disturbing your morning rest." he said, returning to his drink. He was cool, authoratative, and almost smug in his attitude.
Nassir resisted the urge to growl, freezing as Shahin looked directly at where he sat, a slight smirk on his face.
"My father did strongly suggest I discuss a possible joining of our land and power through a union. I suppose I could oblige him in persuing a potential marriage agreement." he added, almost as an afterthought.
Nassir realized what was wrong, and was simultaneously stunned and wary.
Tavyna's eyes narrowed as she met the cold gaze that was leveled in her direction. She didn't like the way he looked at her, almost as if she were an annoying pest.
"I'm here to discuss trading between our lands. Surely you as shahzadi would participate in the proceedings later on as a member of the court? If you are merely interested in a perspective groom worthy of you, then I suppose I should apologize for disturbing your morning rest."
His cold voice sent a sharp chill down her spine and she had to bit down on her tongue just enough to keep the sharp retort from spilling from her lips. He was smug and had an air about him that said he thought of himself far higher than those in his presence right then. It was enough to drive her crazy. Beneath the table, she could feel Nassir's warm fingers curling around hers tightly. She was almost surprised by the grip. Something was bothering the djinni but in her current state, she couldn't ask him to find out what it was.
Once again, she wasn't sure if she should be happy that he wasn't interested in being her suitor, or if she should be angry by the fact that he'd just completely blown her off as if it were nothing. He was belittling her. Tavyna shook slightly with irritation. Then he turned, a cold smirk on his lips as he added to the conversation that she'd unwittingly started.
"My father did strongly suggest I discuss a possible joining of our land and power through a union. I suppose I could oblige him in persuing a potential marriage agreement."
Her lips grew into a thin line as she frowned, her teeth grinding slightly as she glowered at him without restraint, "I will profusely deny you. Forget the notion, Shahin Mirza. As for the negotiations for trade, my father is more than capable, but you can expect to see me there. Unless it displeases you," she coolly replied, her voice acidic as she responded without skipping a beat.
Turning her hand under the table, she interweaved her fingers around Nassir's. She hadn't missed Shahin's little glance right next to her shoulder. It unnerved her to no end to think that this man was more of a danger than Kevah would be. Her heart pounded hard as she squeezed his hand, trying to temper her own shaking. She was on high alert, her body trembling ever so slightly with the fear that perhaps Shahin knew that she possessed a djinni. How could he know that... how!! her thoughts were frantic while her face was stony with her usual cold demeanor.
~He can see me...~ Nassir's voice echoed in her mind. He frowned. There were only three explanations for him being unable to hide his presence from the man. The prince had to not be human. He had to be an extremely powerful magician in tune with the supernatural. Or he was in control of a trapped djinni. The man was definately human, so it was one of the other two.
Nassir was almost as tense as Tavyna, eyes latched onto the prince.
Shirin and the shah stiffened at Tavyna's cool retort. She wasn't as rude and disrespectful as she had been with Kevah, but still. Angering potential allies was not a good idea. "Tavyna..." warned her father, with less bite than usual, but his gaze told her he was no less serious about her behaving and being civil.
Shahin didn't seem upset as Kevah did, or pitying in pretend concern. He merely regarded Tavyna with a wry half smile, a flicker of amusement in his eyes. "No, I wouldn't say it displeases me. You are welcome enough company, and admittedly more interesting than any previous potential candidates. We shall see." he mused, not sounding particularly concerned.
Looking away from her and Nassir, he addressed her father. "In any case, I'll be willing to go over our agreements at your discretion, shahanshah." he said, earning a nod from the king.
"Indeed. Breakfast and morning prayers should come first. Then we shall proceed with the meetings."
Shahin plucked some food from the platters before him, glancing over at Tavyna once more with a mildly interested expression.
