Gau Arrats

"Just because we can fly, doesn't mean we can't get lost. We're not some kind of homing pigeon you know."

a character in “The Fauna Runaways”, originally authored by Turbocs, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

Name:
Gau Arravats
Age:
19
Appearance
Image
Gau is extremely tall, topping off at 6 foot 6, however, he is surprisingly light. He is broad shouldered, has cropped, military-style blonde hair (despite the picture), and basically represents the epitome of a soldier. His eyes are covered in the fogginess that usually accompanies blindness, though you wouldn't know as he almost never opens them. He has a long white band tattooed around his right arm, signifying his achievements as a warrior. Even when in human form, he retains his wings, though they are far from functional. If he is not a full bat, he cannot do more than fall in a controlled dive. In order to leave room for his wings, he wears a black buckled shirt that has two large holes in the back and long leathery pants that cinch around the waist.
Image
As the largest species of bat, he has a wingspan of about 5-1/2 feet and weighs about three lbs. He has large pointed ears, and a brown furry body
Personality:
Gau believes greatly in honor. As such, he doesn't take kindly to his own being challenged. He is quick to fight when insulted. Also, he is used to giving orders, and often comes across as very demanding. However, he holds himself to a high standard as well, and has a strong sense of duty. To him, failure is not an option.
Likes:
High places, fruit, contact with others, flying.
Dislikes:
When people try to explain the concept of 'colors', sickness, water
Skills:
His sense of direction; echolocation; flying; survival skills (making fire, crude weapons, etc.); fighting
Traditions:
  • The tattoo around the fighting arm is standard practice among the males of his clan. The symbols written along this scroll read like a list of achievements.
  • Winter is a vital time for the clan. No one, not even warriors is allowed to venture far from the cave.
  • Others to be added as information strikes.

So begins...

Deep in the cave that housed the group, a large and irate bat did his best to cover his ears with his wings. Gau, sensitive to just about any noise and already used to the silence of solitude, was practically deafened by the conversation of the group out front. The sound of their talking seemed to echo and intensify before it reached the depths of his cave.

'If they do not shut up,' He thought to himself, 'I'm going to go up and make them.' Once again, he tried to fall back asleep, concentrating on shutting out the noise of the group. Yet it just didn't seem possible. It wasn't that he hadn't run into other rogues before, because he had in the weeks that he'd been out here, but just everything in general. There was little room on this crevice, even in his bat form, and rocks and pebbles were poking him from all sides. There was water somewhere deep in the cave that would not stop dripping. The nights were getting chillier and his fur just wasn't enough.

On and on his mental list of complaints went, but when it came down to it, there was really only one thing wrong. It had been three weeks. Three weeks since his clan had sent him, the last able-bodied warrior, to try and find a cure to their plague. In all that time, his clan-mates were getting weaker and weaker. And here he was, still so far from his goal, and pinned into this cave by a group of novice runaways!

If his eyes had been open, Gau would have rolled them. These people just couldn't be quiet, could they? With a sigh, he dropped from the roof of the cave and winged his way towards the mouth, where the fire was. Landing across from the chameleon boy, Jared, he had heard him called, he shifted back to his human form. He stretched, and heard popping as his cramped body got used to the movement.

"So, you don't mind if a poor blind bat shares your fire do you? It's a bit cramped in the cold cave, and it's the least you could do after being so loud." He stated with a lopsided smile. His complaining was in a good-natured tone of voice, indicating that he didn't really mean it. Warming his hands in front of the fire, he waited for the response from the person in front of him.

Kyler gave a shrug, you couldn't please everyone. He did feel a pang of sympathy for the timid girl, but he wasn't about to go racing after her. He began shuffling back into the cave to-
Why was there another boy here? How many runaways had seen this cave as a source of shelter? Why not a tree?
Well, he himself hadn't chosen a tree for it's lack of warmth, but his feathers usually did the job, and it wasn't quite winter yet. He gave a sigh and pulled down the hood of his hoodie, taking a seat once again in front of the fire and regarding the new boy with a nod.
He really hoped that they wouldn't have too big a group in the end, a group of three to five, he was fine with. But when the numbers got larger he usually felt a lot more singled out.
"So who're you then...?" he mumbled to the guy warming himself by the fire.

Cana tried to get in a last word before the deer girl ran away, but it became clear as day that she had been scared of her. She was quite used to it, clans such as the deer clan and others like it were often terrified of the predator prey thing that seemed to go on. She debated running after her, but weighed the pros and cons and thought about what the consequences might be. For one, she knew that the girl might probably think she was hunting her down, but there was less of that chance if she stayed in her human form. She was faster as a wolf but felt confident enough she would catch up to her. She was afraid that she would run into someone that would actually want to hurt her.

Turning back into the cave, she stopped dead in her tracks as she say the bat boy. He had scared the living wits out of her at first, but she had shrugged it off only saying "You're very tall." Making her way to her bag, she took of her heavy cloak and dropped it to the ground. "I'm going to find that girl, I cant have a rogue go kill her, she's to scared to be out there by herself." Concern still filtered her tone of voice. Picking up her back, she sprinted off out of the cave and towards the directions the girl had ran. Good thing about being a wolf is even in human form she had a pretty good sense of smell, an so she tracked the girls scent.

Skidding to a halt as a new, unknown scent filled her noise, she stopped and observed the area. She realized quickly that there mist be a new clan around, and she was probably at the edge of there border. She hopped for Leolas sake it was one of the more friendly ones. Taking a small breath, she knew it was a bad idea to call out the girls name, but that's all she could really do at this point. Saying it on almost a slighter quieter yell, she called out, "Leola!" Hoping that due to the fact there at the edge, there wouldn't be anyone around to hear.

Kyler gave a shrug, he'd returned to not caring. Well, he did care a little for Cana, she was kind at the least. He was contemplating flying behind her to make sure she or the deer girl... Leola, didn't get hurt. But then again, he didn't exactly want to.
Lots of kids back in the clan usually told him he was heartless for some of the things he said or did. But Kyler never understood why telling the truth was "Heartless" or "Cruel", if someone needed fibs to make themselves feel better, Kyler found that pathetic.
"Be careful" he mumbled to Cana as she left.

"The names Gau, Kyler-raven-boy." Gau responded, not bothering to turn his head. "I was just telling your friend here that I hope your group didn't mind sharing the fire."

"You're very tall." The girl, Cana, he had heard her called, commented before leaving again. He chuckled, "Good to meet you to!" He shouted after her and focused back on the two remaining wanderers around the fire.

"Seems as if that shouldn't be to much trouble since you already lost a couple of people - right?" He leaned back on one of the stones lining the cave mouth and stretched out against it. "Besides, even if y'all wanted me to leave, you'd probably find it a bit difficult. I've already made myself comfortable." He grinned challengingly in the raven's direction.

Gau, not the most well-mannered person to begin with, was even more rude when faced with true-bird hybrids. It was a bat thing, he supposed. His clan just tended to look down on their day-flying companions. Always molting feathers, not being able to see in the dark, not even able to do something as simple as hang upside down without a lot of work - he had been raised to view his own species as superior.

((Ravens can see in the dark, I think... HAHAHAHA! >:3 ))

Kyler turned to him slightly and blinked his pale green eyes with a calm and passive expression on his face, he looked like he honestly didn't care. "Oh no, you're free to sit here, I suppose you would have found us loud, it's only fair" he responded with a slight nod. "But, my name isn't 'Kyler-Raven-Boy', It's 'Kyler'" he told him in a low tone before turning his gaze back to the fire. He perhaps should have been a little more welcoming, but it was late. During the night he preferred to sit in silence.
His mind wandered once again, since he'd ran away, where was he going to get his food? Sure he had some in his hoodie pockets, but that would run out at some point. He could steal prey, but wouldn't his scent be found?
He gave a small sigh.

((Not very well, they aren't nocturnal. Usually it's only the nocturnal birds that are able to see at night.))

Gau cocked a head in Kyler's direction, sincerely curious. "How am I supposed to remember you then?" He asked. In his own tribe, that was the method of referring to others. They had their own name, then a couple of characteristics after them. Coming from a historically large flock, Gau was used to names being repeated. The associations that followed a name were often used not only to identify a specific individual, but also such important things as rank or personal view of another person. Post-names such as elder, enemy, small wing were common, but when a bat first met someone, they tended to be vague. It goes without saying that they were bound to change over time, usually when a more important characteristic was perceived. The practice made sense to Gau as he'd been exposed to it over time. "What if I was trying to talk to another Kyler?" He shook his head, not expecting an answer but a bit mystified. The blunt tone of the boy implied that he didn't really want to be much of a talker at this time.

Standing, Gau stretched his wings out this time. "Are either of you hungry? I'm in the mood for an early breakfast and I thought I saw some good fruit not to far away."

Kyler continued staring into the fire, not bothering to move in the slightest with the exception of his jaw as he spoke. "Well then you'll likely remember them by their appearance and personality, or at least I hope you'd be able to distinguish us"
His head turned slightly to the side, and he nodded to Jared, "Suppose Jared there was also named Kyler, you'd be able to distinguish between the two of us, wouldn't you?" a tiny smile played at his pale lips as his head turned back to the fire. In the Bird Clan, two people seldom had the same name, when it happened, one usually adapted a nickname. Pip for example, a Monitor, was originally named "Peter", but adapted the nickname Pip after he found that his name was rather common. Kyler had never really met anyone else with his name, so he felt content that he didn't have to find some ridiculous nickname to give himself. He exhaled slightly, "If you must, you can call me Ky..."

Gau pinpointed the region from which the Raven's voice seemed to have spoken from. "To tell the truth, no I probably wouldn't be able distinguish between the two of you. Seeing how Jared-Chameleon-Boy hasn't spoken, I don't really have much way to identify you voice-wise." At this point, he opened his eyes to make his lack of sight obvious. "Believe it or not, I don't think your appearances would help me much either." He shrugged. "I'll call you Ky if you prefer, but I'm still going to keep the identifiers. If it makes you feel better, they will probably change if I decide to stick around. It's a necessary bat social skill, I'm afraid, and it's one of the few traditions I can keep of my clan out here." Absentmindedly, he clenched and relaxed the arm which displayed his warrior tattoos - the other tradition he could still had. "You have those in your clan, right? Traditions that you try to keep, that is."

As night came on, Nathair awoke from a restless sleep. She had been having the nightmare again. The same nightmare that she had been having almost every day since she fled her clan. Hands drenched in the blood of her kin, the frightened faces of her mother and sister, looking in the mirror only to see the face of a monster. She wondered again what might have happened to her family after she fled. Surely they couldn't have been persecuted... right?

Nathair uncoiled herself and slithered towards the outer cave. It seemed that the Bat who had been staying here was out for the night. Wait... no, maybe not. She could feel creatures moving inside the cave. Large creatures, likely human. She moved in the direction of the vibrations and before long she could hear people talking. There were three of them - all male by the sound of it. Driven by curiosity, she cautiously continued moving towards the males, stopping once she was close enough to see them all. She recognized the Bat but not the two others. The one with green hair felt familiar somehow. Perhaps he was cold-blooded like herself. The other one - Nathair reflexively raised her head and neck into a defensive position. He was an Avian! She could smell it on him. She instinctively rattled her tail to scare him off, stupidly revealing her position.

Kyler raised an eyebrow slightly, Gau was blind? He felt a slight pang of guilt for not realizing that beforehand, but didn't say anything in apology, just a slight blink of the eye. The adults had always ridiculed the clans, excluding their own of course. Felines especially, but he hadn't met one of those yet. They'd often poked fun at Bats for the "Blind as a bat" statement, though Kyler had come to think that the metaphor had come to be for the fact that bats were colour blind.
He turned his head slightly to Gau as he mentioned something about traditions, showing his warrior tattoos. "That's impressive" Kyler mumbled, and he didn't sound sarcastic either. "The Bird, or, Avian Clan I suppose is more formal, they focus more on the world of academic achievement, but also on flight," he explain, then paused and added "And there is a required class on that"
"For every flight class you pass after your 6th year of school, you receive a feather, some choose to wear it in their hair, some make them into those "Dream Catcher" things, it doesn't matter" he shrugged on his last phrase, blowing a strand of black hair from his eye again. "When you first get into school, you're issued a feather of the bird you shift into, mine for example, is a raven feather" his hand moved to the left side of his rib cage, over a pocket on the inside of his coat where he kept it. "If you complete your sixth year of flight, you get a Sparrow's feather, then for your seventh, a Jay's feather, and so on"
He heard something rattling and stood up, instinctively pulling out his switchblade. He'd never heard a Rattlesnake in his life, the only snake he'd ever eaten was a harmless garter one, and it tasted horrible. His gaze swept the room and found the source of rattling. "Who are you..." he asked quietly.

As the Avian boy brought out a small knife, Nathair hissed and prepared to strike. However, she took an extra moment to examine his stance and he didn't look like he was going to attack. His stance was defensive and cautious, not aggressive. She decided that there was no imminent threat and shifted into her human form so she could speak with him. Moments later a teenage human female stood where the snake had once been, scales slowly changing into skin. Her black hair was tied up in a ponytail which brushed across the collar of her navy leather jacket. "My name is Nathair. I apologize if I've frightened you. It's just that I didn't expect to find so many strangers upon waking. Especially ones of your... species." She tried to remain respectful, not wanting to provoke an attack. She had heard stories about the cunning and brutal Avians. You saw a winged shadow on the ground and by the time you looked up you were trapped inside razor sharp claws.

"If I may ask, why are you all here? I've never seen such an odd medley of creatures before."

Kyler nodded a little, but did not sheath his knife. He'd grown to be wary and cautious over the years. He'd told himself when he was planning his escape from the Avian clan that he must be unbiased towards all species, with the exception of cats, he really didn't think he could act pleasant towards them. He could tell that Nathair likely wasn't friendly with his species, and for good reason. As I've said before, he'd eaten a garter snake once. After he'd decided that she wasn't going to attack, he slowly sheathed the blade and placed it back into the pocket inside his large black hoodie. "My name is Kyler, and it's alright," a small smirk played at his lips, "You didn't frighten me."
He decided to sit down and turn towards the fire before continuing, "We've run away, left the clans, two others were here earlier..." he said the last part with a lower voice, he didn't mind Cana, in fact, her and Gau were his favourite members of the group. He just didn't like large crowds. He didn't know what to think of Leola, as he really hadn't met her yet, she seemed like the quiet type though, Kyler liked quiet people.

Gau was about to correct Kyler-Raven-Boy, but thought better of it. It probably wasn't best to reveal the fact that he'd left the clan on the word of his superiors. Not as an exile, but as more of a... search party. To share his reasons for being outside of his territory would reveal a weakness within his clan, and he had known these others for far to little time to trust them with something that important.

So, instead of putting in his own two cents, Gau gave a nod to corroborate Kyler-Raven-Boy's explanation. "I believe they should be on their way back soon." Standing up from his position, he moved to stand even with Kyler. "I am Gau." He introduced himself. He offered his right hand in a handshake in an effort to dispel any lingering tension there might be.

Snakes and bats had once been rivals, though the animosity had faded in the past few generations. A lot of this could be attributed to the growing respect for each others warriors. The snake clan produced some formidable warriors, he had heard. He couldn't help but secretly hope this girl was also a warrior. Call it a fighter's arrogance, but he itched to spar with a Snake, just to see if their fighting abilities was really as advanced as the elders said.

Continuing after her, she took note of the surroundings around her, trying to memorize every detail of the path, trees and anything else as she passed by. She never knew if she was going to come near this place again, but she was sure if she was she wanted to be familiar with it. She watched the girl curiously, an itch in the back of her mind desperately wanting to know why she had left her clan. She of course wasn't going to intrude and ask as that would be rude, but she couldn't help but simply wonder, her imagination coming up with ideas of her own. Shaking her head of the thoughts, she gained her focus back unto the forest surrounding she walked through.

Smiling back a little timidly back at the girl, she picked up her pace as well, but slowed down almost in an instant as she picked up the familiar scents of the group. "We're just about there." She smiled to the girl, pushing back the brushes and shrubs that scratched her arms. She really wish she would have brought her warm cloak. Stepping finally in view of the cave, she peered in, saying a small "Hey," before gliding in. Dropping her bag on the ground, she was quick to grab the light blue cloak that lay on the dirty ground. Slipping it off, the sudden warmth of it gave a small chill going up her spine.

It took Cana less than a second to see the new face amongst them. "We've multiplied." She laughed slightly, looking at the black haired girl. Tilting her head a bit, she examined her. Snake. She thought to herself. She had recognized the scent and she had that feel about her as well. She really didn't see her as being a threat at the moment in time especially do to the fact she hadn't done anything to the others, and that the others hadn't done anything to her. "My names Cana." She spoke softly, directing this both at the snake girl and Gau, who she never had a chance to really say anything to.

Kyler turned his head to face Cana and Leola, and a small smile played on his pale lips. "Hello..." he greeted them. He saw the Leola girl was here as well. His gaze slowly reverted back to the fire, he wasn't much of a conversationalist and he never really knew what to say. Kyler had always been the sort to sit in the corner with his own thoughts and not bother with others, but he found that he sort of liked being around these people, some of them anyway, he didn't know how much he'd like the snake...

Nathair noticed the subtle smirk that ran across Kyler's face when he said that he wasn't scared. "What an arrogant little bird," she thought to herself. However she was shocked to learn that everyone in this cave had fled their clan for some reason or other, including two others who were currently absent. They were runaways like her? Nathair wondered what incredible twist of fate could have brought them all here.

The Bat stood and offered his hand, introducing himself as Gau. As she had noting in particular against Bats, she accepted the handshake willingly. Nathair noticed that Gau's forearm was covered in a long white tattoo. "This tattoo... Are you a warrior?" she asked. Presumably it had something to do with his achievements as a warrior or otherwise. The Rattlesnakes had a very similar practice. She glanced down at her left arm. Her own tattoo was currently being obscured by her jacket but she could still visualize it perfectly. Black lines flowing together to resemble a long snake, mouth open, ready to strike - now with a thin scar running across it.

Just then, two others entered the cave. These must be the other runaways that Kyler had mentioned. Nathair could sense that they were warm blooded but couldn't tell much other than that. The brown-haired one looked quite skittish, perhaps she was often a prey rather than a predator. The blue-haired one introduced herself as Cana. "Good to meet you. My name is Nathair."

It made Kyler feel somewhat happy to receive a smile like that, as it was a rarity for him back home. And he thought "Home" in massive sarcasm quotations because he'd never thought of it as a proper home, just a bunch of bricks and a roof with another big group of annoying, unwanted kids. Kyler did feel odd around these people because he felt that despite his height, he was probably the youngest, and he really didn't like that. A bunch of the stupid kids back "Home" would tease him about his looming height, one quick glare would shut them up, but nonetheless...
