"Ah, good. You showed up!" Said Isabella as Risako, Sarana, and Craig approach. They've been waiting in a waiting room in the Professor's mansion for a couple hours now, and were just let out by a butler. "This way to the Professor." She led the way down the hall. The mansion is Victorian style with paintings and rugs everywhere. The door that was the Professor's lab was ominous, as it was made of steel, and had several high-strength locks on it. Isabella knocked twice, and a slide opened, showing a pair bloodshot eyes.
"Ah, Isabella. Did you bring the assistants?" He said as he was unlocking the door. Seems it could be locked from either end.
"Yes, they're right here." She said as the door opened. The Professor looked like someone who stayed up for a week doing nothing but work. Knowing his reputation, he probably was.
"Good, good! Now then..." Isabella led everyone inside. The lab was an old astronomy building, but the floor was dug down to provide for more room. Stairs spider-webbed across the room, with each landing having a different kind of lab on it. The first one, the one everyone is currently on, holds a large light fixture, illuminating the entire room. It hurts to look straight into it, but is surprisingly easy on the eyes. The Professor was rummaging through a few boxes when he looked at the group again, looking like he just remembered that they were there. "Oh, yes, of course!" He ran over to a filing cabinet. There was a mess everywhere, papers mostly, but a few gadgets on a table directly next to the door also seem disorganized. The Professor started looking at what everyone recognized as their assignment sheet. "You and you." He said, pointing first at Risako, then Craig. "Do you know how to fire and reload a colt 45.?" Before either could answer, he pointed at Sarana. "You. Put this on." He grabbed a lab coat off a table and threw it to her. It smelled like it hasn't been cleaned in years... "You shall assist me on my experiments." He turned toward Risako and Craig. "You will be guards. Isabella will give one of you a schedule for patrolling the halls, while the other shall guard the contents of this room. I leave it to you to decide who shall do what." He said, turning and running off down a flight of stairs.
"I apologize for his behavior, he is... Strange." Isabella said. "I will show you to your rooms. They are not far from here, so don't worry about getting lost." She turned to Sarana and looked confused for a second before stopping. "Oh, crap. Sorry, the Professor wanted you to follow him. He wanted someone to take care of something for him so that he may work on other experiments. He ran off to show you. Did you see the route he took?" She pointed. The Professor was already halfway down the long way down. Everything was made of metal, and looked at least somewhat stable. "You should probably go, otherwise the Professor might get impatient." She turned and walked to the door. "Oh, by the way. This door is to remain locked at all times. The Professor doesn't want anything getting in." There was a short hesitation between the last two words.

Craig looked very confused. He is looking at Isabella open mouthed. Slowly a grin appears on his face. This breaks into a smile. Craig flashes his perfect smile, the smile he always used when he felt uncomfortable or confused. At this moment he felt both.

"So that is our new boss" He said. "Mmmmm he is eh lets say unique. I kind of like him."

Craig wasn't lying. The professor reminded him of his favorite professor in college. He always ran around looking for papers he had misplaced. He was the only one to see anything in Craig that wasn't to do with football. Being a college football star Craig was used to getting attention from people. This professor gave him attention not for his football but because Craig was hard working, dedicated if not always the smartest. He hoped to form the same kind of relationship with The Professor here.

"So i guess i'm security" He said with a broad grin. Determined to do a great job for the Professor.

Sarana looked around the big building, impressed at it's condition. This place is pretty old. It gives me the shivers... She put on the lab coat, wrinkling her nose at the smell. I'll have to clean this She turned to Isabella, smiling sympathetically. I wonder if I have enough patience to deal with the professor too

"I'll go right away, can you take my stuff to my door? If you leave them outside I'll find my room." She grinned at everyone and said "I'm Sarana, I'll find out your names later, toodles!" Sarana turned and sprinted down the hall to what seemed to be the lab. She rushed in, worried she had missed out on something. She panted for a second. "Sarana the lab assistant reporting sir!" She stood up, and walked over to the crazy old man.

"Okay" Said Isabella as Sarana ran off after the Professor. She then turned and smiled at Craig. "Yes, I suppose you are." Something told Craig that she seemed to mock him a little. She frowned at herself for a second before turning to the door and walking out without another word, assuming that everyone was following her. She walked for a couple of seconds before turning into a hall with five doors, two on either side with one at the end. "They're all the same." She turned to Craig. "I must apologize for any strange behavior from either me or the Professor. You see, his strange behavior seems to be rubbing off on me." She smiles politely. "I hope you can forgive any rudeness."

"There you are." The Professor said stiffly. He was standing next to a steel table, with something strapped onto it. There were wires attached, but none came out of the object itself. It was big and round, about the size of a football. It was golden in color, and very expensive looking. "I found that this... thing produces small amounts of electricity. Upon further examination, I found that it ramdomly produces volts ranging from the thousands to the thousandths. A friend found it on his travels in Egypt, and kindly sent it to me. I have been studying it for quite some time now, but I have yet to even break it to discover where the power is coming from. It doesn't recharge, it is as if it just has an inexhaustible amount of power. I grew bored of figuring it out, so you do it." He said it like he was bored with the whole conversation. "Tell me if it does something interesting." He turns and walks back up the stairs. As he walks, the object clicks, and opens. Its a blood-red eye, with a blue iris, and it focuses on Sarana for a second before snapping back shut with another click.

Craig smiled at Isabella.

"It's okay i am used to it."

This was the truth. Craig was used to no one ever taking him serious and laughing at him whenever he spoke about anything more serious than football. He knew he was always seen as a dumb jock. He accepted this and learned to laugh about it.

"Can i ask though. What is the professor working on? He seems very intense."

The Professor walked calmly back, taking his time. "Yes, what is it?" He seemed somewhat interested, but still seemed bored about the subject. After hearing Sarana's briefing, he took on a more curious pose. "So, it happens with every new person..." He put on a rubber glove and picked up the curious device. "When I opened the box, Isabella was there. When she left, it opened right in front of me, and looked at me. It was green, with a purple iris. I had Isabella be in the same room with it by herself, and she said the same thing. I believe that it is intelligent, and that it is examining us. Of course, that is simply a theory, but I feel that I am correct..." He said before he started mumbling to himself. He talked quietly to himself for a couple of seconds before remembering Sarana was there. "I set it up so that it powers most of the facility, but it needs someone to monitor the volt meters and make sure it doesn't pass the red line I put on it. If it does, and it really shouldn't, unplug everything from it, tell me, and wait by the door. Last time... Well, lets just say that's what the other two are for." He started walking away, face full of thoughts.

"Oh, the Professor works on several things at once. He is working on several different electric generators that have zero faults, a couple of space shuttle designs, and... Well, something else." Isabella seemed rather disturbed by the last object. She set Sarana's bags in front of one of the doors. "Excuse me, I must go. The Professor gave me some work to do this morning, and I expect it will take at least a day or two to finish, with all the other work he'll give me before the day's done." She turned and walked back to the lab.

Risako looked around the waiting room, scanning almost every surface. Interesting, she thought. So this is what the place looks like. Finding the mansion had been rather challenging for her. The road to get there twisted and turned as though it was once the path of some colossal snake. Once the mansion was in view, however, she knew that she had gone the right way. The dome atop the mansion used for astronomy had been a dead give-away. Beside her were the other two people she would be working with. The man looked fairly large, she guessed he would be a guard. The girl held herself high and with confidence. She decided they looked friendly enough. Eventually the door to the heart of the place creaked open. Through it Risako saw a tall young woman dressed in a lab coat.
"This way to the Professor." She said and led them deeper inside the mansion. Risako was then greeted by a thick looking steel door. Looks like the professor doesn't want to let anything in. Risako could feel the excitement bubbling within her, something exiting was going to happen here and she was going to be a part of it. Finally she was let in and got to see the professor fully. Pale skin, I bet he never goes outside, but then again, why would he with a lab like this? Risako decided she liked this lab, it looked secure and housed many different gadgets and machines. More than anything, this lab interested her. The professor pointed at her, saying "Do you know how to fire and reload a colt 45.?" Before she could answer, he turned and assigned people duties, she had been made a guard. Why does this place need guards? She wondered. She figured she would find out soon enough.
Eventually the man spoke. "So that is our new boss" He said. "Mmmmm he is eh let’s say unique. I kind of like him."
“He seems to be quite the character,” she agreed. She wasn't entirely sure if she liked the professor yet, he seemed to be caked in mystery and she wasn't sure if she could trust him.
Before long she had been led to her room where she quickly deposited her clothes. After this she was led back to the lab where the professor came in once again.
"When I opened the box, Isabella was there. When she left, it opened right in front of me, and looked at me. It was green, with a purple iris. I had Isabella be in the same room with it by herself, and she said the same thing. I believe that it is intelligent, and that it is examining us. Of course, that is simply a theory, but I feel that I am correct..." Risako stared at the doctor, puzzled by the thing. So this is what we are guarding. She zoned out for a moment while the professor delivered what she presumed were instructions, she decided she would have to ask her co-workers about that later. As soon as the professor left she felt chills rise though her. It was then that she fully comprehended what she was there for. The steel doors had not been there simply to keep people out, they were there to keep whatever the thing was in.

As everyone started settling down, Isabella handed Craig and Risako their pistols and ammo. Three clips seemed a little much for simply guarding a room... "Nothing should happen." She said, smiling. "Also, if those aren't enough-" She walked up to an armored cabinet and opened it. Inside there was six MK14 semi-automatic rifles and four Colt 45. pistols, with rows upon rows of ammo for both guns. There was even grenades stocked on the bottom shelf. "-Feel free to blow whatever it is away." She stared at them for a second before glancing alarmingly at them. "Oh! Honestly, the Professor wanted these. I really don't know why we need so much firepower but... Well, the prototypes the Professor keeps in here is probably worth so much that the U.S. Government would go into deeper debt buying them. I'm just glad that we finally have someone who can actually protect it all." She seemed to be telling the truth, but only a half-truth. There was more to having guards in the building.

A week later, no change in anything. The Professor mostly kept to himself, only calling on them when they were in the way of something or he needed more hands or muscle. He seemed to kind of like Craig, as his muscle was very helpful. Other than that, the room seemed... Away from reality. Like he got god to bend the laws of physics in that lab. Strange things were happening, shadows moved with nothing producing them. Then, a massive power surge from the strange golden object caught everyone's attention. Sarana tried to do as the Professor said, but the clamps seemed to have melted to it, making it impossible to remove them. The eye opened again, right in front of everyone, blinked a couple of times, and started glowing a bright neon green. It then shut its eye with a click, and the power returned to normal. Even the clamps on the object unmelted, returning to normal. After a long while, the Professor dismissed Risako to guard the door, ordering Craig to guard the artifact. Upon her arrival, however, Risako finds the door melted, unable to be opened from either end. "That is a problem." Said the Professor after staring at the melted metal for a couple of seconds, then turned to the others. "It doesn't want us to leave. I believe that it wants to... Test us."

"Well, yes. It appears to have a certain amount of influence on its environment. The only scientific reason I can think of, and this will sound redundant, is it is magic." He stared at it for a second. "Although, I don't think it sees us as anything more than rats. Now I wonder what it thinks of rats..." The Professor started running down another flight of stairs before anyone could say anything.
"Stay here, I'll try to get him to focus." Said Isabella before chasing him.

Everyone stood silently for a couple of seconds before Craig started seeing something that was obviously not normal. The walls started to bleed. Risako and Sarana don't see anything out of the ordinary. Instead, they notice that the eye has opened its eye slightly, and it has a purple glow coming from it. Upon further investigation, the eye slams shut, but a shadow on the wall 'runs' off in the opposite direction of the Professor.

"Shh shh shh! Craig calm the fu-" Sarana was interrupted by a shadow running away on the wall, and she was starting to panic too. WTF is going on here!? Sarana took a deep breath, and stood on a small table. "Guys, we need to calm down OK?" She looked around the room, measuring up everyone's facial expressions. Craig was as terrified as you could probably get, and Risako was hard to read. "Guys, we're gonna be fine OK? We just need to make sure that THIS indicator, doesn't go past THIS red line." Upon saying this sentence, the indicator moved up a tiny bit.

Now everyone was REALLY creeped out. Sarana moved to the side of the table further away from the thing. "OK, so that wasn't too good. BUT, we have to just work together to find out what the heck is going on here. I'll just unplug one of these cords ok?" Sarana then unplugged one of the multiple cords, and the indicator went down a smidgen. Also, was it just her or were the lights a little dimmer? She shrugged it off, and got on her knees next to the thing. "WHAT DO YOU WANT US TO DO?" She tapped on it and shouted to make sure it could hear her. She knew it did, because then it opened.

As if in response, the meter sky-rocketed for a second. The lights became blinding, and something screamed horribly from the direction the shadow ran off to. A clang of something landing on the metal floor. Then the meter dropped to nothing, killing the lights. The only light was from what appeared to be a hooded figure with meat hooks for hands, holding a blue torch. The light wasn't bright enough to see its face.

Sarana was terrified, and quickly hid under a table from the thing that was in the room. She signalled to Craig to shoot on three, and for Risako to do the same. "One" The thing was getting closer... "Two" It raised it's hand to strike... "THREE!"
Craig and Risako shot the thing with a round each, and Sarana splashed some acid on its legs and feet, as it yelled in pain and ran out of the room, bleeding and burning slightly. Before it left the room though, it raised it's hand and brought it down suddenly, and the lights came back on, and it vanished.

Sarana quivered under the bench, terrified out of her wits. What was that thing?! And what was that scream?! She stood up from under the bench, and kneeled on the floor for a second, and threw up. Craig and Risako didn't look too good either. She stood up and grabbed a test tube from a bench, and took a sample of the blood on the floor. "I can test this to see if that thing was even human, or maybe even who they were..." She put the tube in her pocket, and stared at the sphere. "We have to work this sh*t out..." She leant on a bench, and shuddered. Sarana then stood up, and walked round the corner with the others close behind. She came to a halt, shocked at what she saw. "Well isn't that just great."

Sarana counted to three. Craig did as he was told. Instinct taking over. He shoot. His bullet hit the figure around where their heart should be. It didn't drop. It just yelled and ran away. Craig felt an evil the second the power surge happened and even though everyne tried to keep him calm he knew they felt it too.

Sarana took a sample of the blood from the ground. "I can test this to see if the thing was even human, or maybe even who they were...We have to work this sh*t out"

"Work this out? I can save you some time that thing was not f*cking human. I shot it in the heart, Risako got a pretty clean head shot and it didn't even fall. You threw acid on it's feet and yet it still ran out of here. It is not human and we don't need to test it. What we need to do is get the f*ck out of this place."

Sarana walked round the corner as Craig spoke. Craig looked at Risako and signaled for them to follow her. They came to a halt. In shock Sarana announced what they were all thinking "Well isn't this just great"

In their haste to shoot the thing, they must have failed to hear the massive several hundred pound arm's locker slam on its face, preventing anyone from accessing the MK14's, the other colts's, or the grenades. Isabella was sitting on it, hands on her hip. Footsteps and heavy breathing come from the corridor, and someone's hand grips the corner. "What... What was that?" Said the Professor's voice. "It ran by here and slammed into me and Isabella, then freaked and smacked the locker, knocking it over." The Professor's head moves into view. His shoulder was bleeding. "It ran to the door."

Sarana slumped in disappointment. So we can't get to the rest of the weapons, and more of us are terrified and hurt! This is the most fun I've ever had. NOT. Isabella looked injured, and Sarana rushed over to see if she was ok. Her hip didn't look too bad, but then again, she couldn't feel how much pain she was in. Sarana looked up at Isabella. "Are you ok Isabella?" She then pointed at Craig and Risako. "One of you go with the professor and the other go guard the door!" Sarana took out the test tube and held it up. " And Professor, do you have any thing I can test this DNA sample with?"

Sarana then pointed at Craig and Risako. "One of you go with the professor and the other go guard the door!" Craig looked at Sarana. He didn't think she had this kind of leadership in her. He was impressed.

"I will go with you professor. Guess i'm your personal bodyguard now he said smiling trying to somehow relax himself a little."

Sarana took out the test tube and held it up. " And Professor, do you have any thing I can test this DNA sample with?" Criag waited with the professor for him to answer.

"The way that that... Thing went has a DNA processing lab." He didn't seem so much hurt as shocked. Not surprising, considering what just happened. The lights were still out, but everyone had a flashlight. The Professor looked at the weapons locker. "If we get a crowbar, I can get a jack under it and get the weapons. Of course, the crowbar is..." He looks down the corridor where the creature ran.

Isabella looked up and smiled, trying to mask obvious fear. "I-I'm fine. It just came out of nowhere and..." She stopped and took a deep breath.

Sarana sighed, and ran her fingers through her hair. Yet again, they would be split up. She didn't like it, and that sphere was ruining everything. If Risako and Isabella came with them, there would be more people to look after, and if they came, the weapons would be left unguarded. Sarana inhaled deeply, and blurted out "They should come with us." She immediately knew she was right. Even though Risako would be there with Isabella, there were only two of them, but more safety in numbers as they say. Sarana pulled out her phone. There was no signal, but she could see the time. "10 pm. We should get going and do this before going to bed. If that's even safe enough..."

"Feel free to blow whatever it is away." Isabella’s words made Risako feel slightly more confident about working in the lab, they reminded her that any living thing could be killed, and now she had the tools that would give her that kind of control.

Few things happened that week, however, the odd occurrences that came with working in the lab and with the art were starting to take their toll. Everyone in the lab had seen the shifting shadows and strange sounds. These shadows… is it trying to tell us something? Are they even real? Risako could see the uneasy looks in her co-workers’ eyes. Sleep was another thing that was affected by the occurrences. Risako now had pronounced rings around her eyes. Not knowing what the artifact was capable of was the worst part, she felt like it could attack her at any moment for no reason at all. Subconsciously she was scared as well, she found herself walking quite a bit quicker when in close proximity to it.

The next week was much more eventful. The artifact was acting up and a major power surge seemed imminent. Risako was ordered to guard the heavy steel door. Once she was at the door her facial expression quickly changed from one of confidence to shock. Her lips split apart and her eyes widened. It’s… melted. She marvelled at the door. The artifact had been able to send enough energy to the door to actually melt the solid steel. The sounds earlier… could they have been from the vibrations of the metals through the lab? Risako had a basic understanding of electromagnetic induction. She wondered if the artifact had been rapidly changing the polarity of the electricity it put out and angling it’s electromagnetism towards the door, making it vibrate at such a high rate that it melted. The electricity required to do so, however, would have been colossal, it didn't make sense. How is it that it seems to have an abundance of energy? Regardless of the reason, it seemed to be testing them constantly, both in subtle and noisy ways. She ran and alerted the professor.

A bit later, Craig started yelling hysterically.

"Th-th-the walls, look at the damn walls," he stuttered. Risako turned and scanned them, she couldn't see whatever Craig was seeing. She shrugged. Poor Craig, I think working here has gotten to him. Over the course of working in the lab she had gotten the impression that Craig was big and burly on the outside, but was as vulnerable as a puppy, possibly with anxiety, on the inside. He started to shake, waving his gun wildly at the wall. Risako sighed, this was going to be a long week. Behind her she heard a slam. She turned to face the source of the noise, it was the artifact, it had once again opened its eye. Beside her she could hear Sarana try to bring Craig back to his senses. Risako looked in wonder at it. After she was finished Sarana demanded an answer from it and tapped it with the force of a punch. Suddenly a figure materialized and ran in the direction of the shadow. Risako was scared but thrilled at the same time, she could feel a rush of adrenalin coming on. I think she’s angered it. Risako pulled her colt .45 from its holster and fired. Her bullet had hit its head, she could see it jolt backwards from the impact, but it seemed to have no effect. Craig had fired as well with a similar result. Sarana’s acid seemed to be the only thing it responded to. It seemed to have disappeared while Risako wasn't looking. She began to question her previous assumption on control. Sarana took a sample to see if it was terrestrial and living. Risako suspected not, but the tests would tell.

The professor informed them about the fallen cabinet and location of the crowbar. Sarana was pretty shaken, but she calmed down fast, and Craig seemed to be back to normal as well. Risako tried to keep her hands still but found she could not, they were still shaking. She didn't show very outwardly the extent of her fear, but inside she was rather scared. She had never had to actually fire a gun for self defence before, the thought that she had to now was paralysing. Craig turned to Sarana and spoke.

"You need to come too if you want to get to that DNA lab, so will we all stay together or should Isabella and Risako stay here?"

“They should come with us,” Sarana blurted out. Her eyes darted towards the weapons locker. Risako could sense the concern in her voice.

“Don’t worry,” Risako said reassuringly, “If we can’t lift it, neither can it, right?” The last bit had been partially reassurance, and partially question.

As the group walked carefully down the stairs, they hear a very loud unhuman shriek from whatever that monster was. Then a light came flying down the hall behind the group to the direction the creature took. "It must have come from the artifact..." Said the Professor.
"What does that mean?" Said Isabella. Before he could respond, everyone noticed their light wasn't the only light present. The creature was walking their way, but this time it had a small lantern in its hand, with a small blue flame inside, the light only protruding a few feet away. Its 'face' was revealed, showing nothing but a silhouette of a hand. Its feet showed scaring, but were healing rapidly. The bullet wounds weren't even there anymore. "Oh gods..." Isabella whispered.
"Don't shoot it..." Whispered the Professor. He reached into his pocket and took out a pen. He aimed and threw it next to the creature. It jumped, surprised, before peering where the pencil went before moving to investigate. "Interesting..." He said. "I wonder if that 'hand' on its face is a weak point..." He pulls out another pen. "Only a couple more things to test before we do something about it..." He throws the pen, but makes sure it doesn't enter the light of the lantern. The creature doesn't even register that it heard something, it being preoccupied staring at the last pen her threw. The Professor looks at Risako. "Shoot out its lantern. Don't miss, that might scare it away even further back, and it might damage things as it goes."

Sarana noticed the link between the lantern and the creature too. I've seen that color before... She almost jumped in shock when she realized where she had seen the color. She made the connections silently It must act in a similar way too, and...Oh my. The color was the same color as the iris of the artifact. So maybe the thing... Was the artifact? She made more connections, and grinned slightly as she thought. Well the eye has never shown itself when this thing's out and about, and the acid was the only thing in the lab that left a small mark on the gold. Oh Sarana you DO out do yourself

Risako looked towards the creature. She remembered that it's feet were mangled after what Sarana had done to it, when she glanced at it's feet again they were completely healed. She wasn't sure shooting it would kill it, but took aim for its light source and fired, she missed. Again she took aim, this time slightly to the left, again she missed. Her next bullet skimmed and ricocheted off the coppery structure of the lantern. One more shot and she hit it. All of this took place within two or three seconds. The light didn't go out however, she simply shattered it's outermost glass casing. Of course the light won't go out, it's a flame. Risako paused and studied it's lantern as it ran back into the abyss that was the hallways. She guessed the flame was burning some sort of alcohol to make it blue.

"Professor, I think it's time we take a different approach."

The creature seemed disturbed by the bullets, but not the sounds. It raised the lantern before the glass shattered, exposing the flame. It took a few steps back, then 'looked' in the direction of the group, and started walking towards them.
"Uh, I believe a swift retreat is in order..." The Professor said, backing up. As the group retreated from the creature, which approached slowly, making no noise, the lights flickered for a second, and a strange sound came from the way of the artifact, something like a moan. "Is it toying with?" Isabella asked the Professor. "Perhaps, though I doubt it. I think it's trying to get more of these... Things out." He paused. "Which means that there might be another one behind us now..." He said, looking down the hallway.
Sure enough, a blue flickering light appeared, held in a lantern by another creature, exactly identical to the other. He looked at both Craig and Risako. "Aim for it's head, the 'face', if you will." He said, looking at both of the encroaching creatures nervously. "Both of them at the same time would be nice."

Sarana looked at the two things surrounding them, more scared than she had ever been in her life. She pulled out the vial of acid, taking off its lid. She readied for a short scuffle, and stared into the thing's eyes. She swirled the acid, getting it active, and then chucked half on to the creature in front of her then the thing behind her. Risako and Craig shot at the things as she did this, and they then quickly fled while the creatures screamed. They ran around the house, eventually finding a small room that was hard to spot it made itself so small looking. They dove into the room and blocked the door, panting, pumped full of adrenaline. "Shit."
