Kaia Rheinallt grew up on Cinnabar Island in the Kanto region. Part of a well-sized extended family, she had no shortage of parental love and affection, nor mentors from among her 'aunts and uncles,' a group of people which includes such vaunted and famous names as two different pokΓ©mon champions, a gym leader, a well-respected professor, a leading pokΓ©mon surgeon, and three former members of Neo Team Rocket. Two of those are her parents, and these days, her mother's a coordinator and her father runs a jiu-jitsu dojo.
Surrounded by talented and interesting people, as well as those striving to make up for the sins of their pasts, she was never short of encouragement, affection, and good advice, and this helped her blossom into a confident, assured young woman who is intelligent, charismatic, and well-aware of her advantages. It hasn't made her arrogant, just self-possessedβKaia knows her value, and refuses to be treated as anything less than she is.
Having graduated from school recently, she turned down an opportunity to go to university to instead pursue her ambitions in raising and competing with pokΓ©mon. While knowledgeable and interested in battling, Kaia's true preference is for performance. When she found out that a family friend was spearheading a new coordinating endeavor in the Hoenn region, she decided that this was her chance to make a name for herself on the scene, by herself. Kaia loves and admires her mother, but the last thing she wants is to be perceived as succeeding only because Cyrilla did.
Honestly, she wasn't listening too closely when it came to the whole 'partner' bit. She figures she can always find someone to work with on the way. What's a coordinator who can't coordinate with someone else, after all? Worst case scenario, she can always browbeat Dom into standing in until she's established herself as someone good to partner with; her cousin would absolutely did it if she asked. Maybe. Why wouldn't he?
When her uncle Aidan's Alolan Ninetales Frost hatched an egg, Kaia adopted the vulpix, naming her Amaryllis and deciding to find a way to build a coordination strategy around an ice type more inclined to battling than contests. Someday, everyone will know Ama's worthβand Kaia's, too.

Dominyk AsherβDom, to his familyβhas always been a bit of an odd ducklett.
Part of this isn't really his fault, as he was somewhat odd from birth. His mother fondly recounts stories of objects in his crib levitating, or how he never criedβsimply projected feelings to either herself or his father when he was hungry or tired, or anything else. It's not completely surprising that he was born a rather gifted psychic, as both his parents had some version of the talent. But it did make learning to communicate in other ways somewhat less urgent, and whether because of that or for other reasons, Dominyk was quite speech-delayed, not saying anything out loud until well after he was five, though his grammar was nearly perfect when he did. Early childhood was characterized by unusual milestones and the development of a rather quiet, introspective personality.
It isn't that he doesn't care for his family: he absolutely does. And he gets along better with them than with anyone else, though his relationship with his similarly-reserved father can be strained at times, because neither of them is especially good at expressing emotion. But they do love each other, and Dom knows that.
School wasβ¦ a less-good experience. Whereas his cousin, Kaia, was well-liked and popular, Dom was quite the opposite. Poor communication skills coupled with difficulty avoiding learning things he didn't want to know via telepathy made it a hard time essentially from the beginning, and the awkwardness only intensified as he became a teenager. Academically he was fine; sociallyβ¦ he struggled. And he didn't tell anyone he struggled until a lot of damage had been done, metaphorically speaking. At that point, his parents pulled him out of school and he tested for the equivalent of a diploma, then spent a year working for them at the shelter. Now, he's off with his cousin for a pokemon journey in Hoennβsomething he's still not entirely sure he wants to do.
But, he's going to give it a try. He has to find something he's good at doing eventually, right? He doesn't know what that's going to be, but he has the vague idea to try a gym challenge. Mostly since he's definitely not coordinator material. Along with Kaia and her vulpix, Dom is accompanied by Saberβa ralts he rescued and rehabilitated himself.
