The Gates of Death

The Gates of Death

0 INK

For hundreds of years, seven Guardians have protected the Gates of Death. They have long since died, their souls still fighting. But now… there is a new force, a living force, threatening the gates. And in only the living can fight the living.

500 readers have visited The Gates of Death since Everscale created it.

Introduction

Since the beginning of time, seven Gates have stood between the worlds of the living and the dead. One man, the Reaper, has always stood guard over these Gates, ensuring that nothing ever escapes once it has passed into Death.
That is, until the reign of one particularly innovative Reaper.
His name was Avis Lynhold. And in the face of a dangerous threat from beyond the Gate, he chose to split his powers among seven others, so that if one Guardian died, six more could take his place. The Ring of Death, which the Reaper wore, became only one of seven Rings of Death, each one carved from its respective Gate, each one capable of opening its Gate.
Avis Lynhold gathered to him six other capable Guardians, and presented each one with a Ring. They fought their battle. They won.
This was nearly two centuries ago. One by one, they have passed away. But bonded to the Gates of Death, they are not able to die. Their souls survive in the realm between the living and the dead, forever guarding the Gates.
Until now, this has not been a problem.
But now, they are confronted with a new problem. There is something trying to escape Death once more.
And there is something trying to get into it.
Dead themselves, the ancient Guardian spirits are incapable of fighting this new, living threat. And so Avis Lynhold, the leader of the Guardians, has decided that it is time to pass the rings on. To train seven new Guardians of Death.
You are these Guardians. Seven children near death, caught in the space between the worlds. You have been offered salvation by these Guardians; train to become the defenders of life, and you, yourself, will survive. Or at least, you will survive… until battle takes your life.
You can only do as much as you have strength to do. We shall see if that strength is enough.

The Rings of Death and their Guardians
Reaper – a simple band of hematite, this is, perhaps, the most powerful of all the rings. The bearer is capable of tearing a soul from its body, seemingly without a cost. However, there is a limit to the number of souls a Reaper can take. Too many, too fast, and they will end up tearing their own soul apart.
o History - Leader of the Seven Guardians, the name of the first Reaper has long since been lost to time. But the first Reaper to rule over six other Guardians of Death was the honorable, legendary Avis Lynhold. It is said that Avis fought to protect his Guardians to the last, eventually tearing his own soul as he reaped one villain too many. With his spirit in tatters, he is suspended within his Gate, able to emerge for only a short amount of time, and so only for the most important of matters. The Reaper uses a scythe as its weapon.

Viewer – a ring of shifting opal hues, it is the most deceptive, and often most dangerous, of the rings. The bearer is capable of producing intricate illusions, planting them in the minds of whomever they wish. No one, not even Reaper, is immune to these illusions. The price, however, is steep. Over time, the Ring begins to show the bearer things, at first in his dreams, and then more and more into the waking hours, until, as it did with Shyde, the Ring claims its bearer’s sanity. The Viewer uses a lethal web of wires as its weapon.
o History - The first Viewer was Shyde Valor, dearest friend to Avis Lynhold. Chosen as Viewer because of his vivid talent as a story-teller, it is said that the power of Viewer ate away at his mind, until Avis was forced to kill him out of mercy.

Bringer – a ring of glittering sapphire, it is a difficult and pricey Ring to master. At first, it would seem to have no power at all. It is capable of teleporting the bearer, and anyone touching the bearer, anywhere and everywhere that they might want to go. The difficulty being that the power of this Ring does not manifest, until the bearer loses the ability to transport themselves. The Bringer uses a rifle, or in more modern times, a sniper-rifle.
o History - The first Bringer was a fiery woman by the name of Evangline Ride. A high-spirited feminist, she was perhaps one of Avis’ most difficult Guardians. She was a talented assassin, and so needed no power from her ring. Bringer’s power did not manifest until she lost her legs in battle.

Mender – a ring of glorious emerald, its power takes a toll with each and every use. It is, however, the only Ring whose effect can be temporary. Capable of healing, or re-opening, even the oldest of wounds, the ring draws its energy from the environment around it. Only the most powerful of bearers can pull the energy from other things; even Phillipe never mastered the technique. So far, no bearer has ever been able to draw energy from a source other than themselves. The Mender wields a scalpel.
o History - The first Mender was a man named Phillipe Jenson. He was the least willing of the seven original Guardians, kept in the ranks by a debt of life to Avis. His obsession with debt cost him his life, before he could pay off his debt to Avis.

Screamer – a ring of yellow citrine. It is capable of producing a high-pitched noise that can shatter glass, shake metal, and stun all those who hear it at close range. As with John Doe, its power can eventually be translated into the voice of the bearer. However, also as with John Doe, the Screamer often has little left of his ability to hear. The Screamer uses various items of kitchenware as a weapon. John Doe’s personal preference was forks, though he also enjoyed killing with a spoon.
o History - The first Screamer was a man whose name no one knew. As such, he was called John Doe. Sealed deep in an asylum, not for madness, but for knowing too much, when Avis found him, he had lost half of who he was. He was never whole again, and to this day, his shattered soul sometimes loses its tentative sanity.

Hunter – a ring of amber, complete with an entombed moth. The Hunter is capable of locating anything and anyone they are familiar with, wherever they might be. It takes a very special person to qualify as Hunter; possessed of a certain natural intuition, they often know things before anyone else, are often aware that something has happened before it has been reported, and are often seen as odd. They make people nervous, and are shunned throughout their lives. This is the price asked by the ring, and it is given even before a Hunter becomes the Hunter. The Hunter fights with a bow and arrows, or in more modern days, a crossbow.
o History - The first Hunter was a young man named Jesse Haller. By occupation, he was a delivery boy. Living in the underworld, he picked up loose jobs searching for things; even people, sometimes; and delivering them to various locations. He was said to have some sort of uncanny intuition that allowed him to find things much more easily than he should have been able to. This intuition did not stop his body from turning up face-down in a river.

Challenger – a ring of perfect diamond. The Challenger is in the most danger, out of all the Guardians. There is an aura around the ring of the Challenger which draws all enemies to this bearer, above all. Because they are always at the center of the fighting, they must be skilled in combat, hardy, and accepting of the fact that they are not likely to live very long. An early death is the price of this ring. The Challenger uses a set of lethal claws as his weapon.
o History - The first Challenger was the exact opposite of what the Challenger was expected to be. A small, sweet child of unknown origin and little language-skill, he lived by two names; Daydream, as a Guardian, and Yasel by birth. His past, however, was tortured. His soul had been shredded, and merged with that of his older brother Remice, cousin to Avis. Though he was only five when he became a Guardian, the tearing of his soul had a lingering effect. He did not live to see his eighth birthday. Only Shyde and Avis passed on before him.

Along with there being seven Gates, each Gate guards a separate realm, which is home to the mind and soul of its Guardian. Though the current Guardians will never fade, when the new Guardians come into power, they will become only a reinforcement troupe, and the appearance of each realm will change to match the mind of the new Guardians. For now, this is what each realm looks like. They are listed in order, from closest to live to closest to death. Once a Ring has passed beyond its Gate, it loses its power until it returns to the shallower realms of Death.
• Mender – a misty maple wood.
• Bringer – a thriving metropolis.
• Challenger – a blooming meadow of wildflowers.
• Screamer – an empty white salt plain.
• Viewer – a small campground in a pine forest.
• Hunter – a massive stone labyrinth.
• Reaper – empty blackness, reaching up to the Gate. No one but the Reaper knows what it looks like beyond that Gate.

Toggle Rules

1. No god-modding, power-playing, blah blah blah….
2. Keep to the power of your Ring. Screamer can’t steal souls, Reaper can’t stun someone, etc.
3. Be active. If you are not active, another player will be given your character. If you can not post for any length of time, PM Everscale.
4. Relationships between characters are permitted; encouraged, even; but please don’t be too explicit on the roleplay. I’m not particularly bothered by it, but others might be.
5. Do not swear every other word. Curses are powerful words, which lose
6. Do not make your character too odd or disagreeable. These are real people being sucked into this situation, and we need them to get along. Insanity is an attribute reserved for John Doe, the first Screamer. And he’s only a part-time madman.
7. Each character MUST give something up for their power. It is the way the Death Rings work.
8. Be kind to one another.
9. No joining the enemy. It’s a pain, for one. And for two; Avis Lynhold could eliminate you in an instant. Your character wouldn’t survive the treachery.
10. Though you can’t switch sides once your character is made, a certain number of more experienced players can play a villain. Contact me if you are interested. I’ll let you know if there are spaces available. (Everscale)
11. The power of a Ring fails once it has passed further into Death than its Gate. Keep to this rule. Only Reaper can act in the final Realm.

Faith raised her eyebrow. She was still finding this all hard to believe. Dead people...did she mean...zombies? There was a strange thrill of fascination that ran through her otherwise dead (no pun intended) body.

She listened intently to what the woman had to say.

"What do you want us to do about it then....?" Alexander asked softly. It wasn't like they could fight an army that huge.

"Each of you has a special skill which makes you... capable of handling this situation, should you agree to join our cause. Certain qualities." Shyde glanced at Faith, "You can weave something out of nothing. Your imagination can pull even the wildest stories and make them seem real." He turned to Valian, "You have lost the ability to walk on your own. That, in itself, is enough." Then to Alexander, "You can find things, people, whatever you want, whenever you want. It is simple to you."
Finally, he turned to Violet, "You feel no empathy for your enemies."
He turned now to face them all as one, "Though only four of you have been found, that is enough, for now. Should you choose our path, rather than the mindless life of a zombie, you will become the Guardians of the Gates of Death."

"You can weave something out of nothing. Your imagination can pull even the wildest stories and make them seem real."

Faith hugged herself tighter. Wildest stories? Like pretending she was eighteen when she was only fourteen? Pretending that she actually knew how to dance when she couldn't even tell the difference between a back roll and an undulation?

She resisted the urge to scoff.

If the man was talking about all the lies in her life...well, then, in a way, he was passing judgment on her.

But what did that have to do with saving the world? What did lying and cheating and pretending have to do with making the world free of zombies?

Shyde frowned.
"Perhaps... if I show you."
Evangeline scoffed angrily.
"You haven't tried that yet?" She growled. Shyde gave her a wry smile, then raised one hand.
On his finger, a ring glistened. A silver loop, with an opal stone set into it. Pictures danced within the stone's surface.
"Watch," He called gently, "And don't try to escape. You won't be able to."
And then he cast his illusions over their minds.

Broken cities, clouded skies, people screaming, dying. The dead walking the streets, shambling along, twisted and shattered corpses taking more and more life, multiplying in number every time another died. Demons, spirits of the dead, ghosts, raging through the city streets, hunting men, women, and children.
But mainly children.
And blood. River of blood. Seas of blood, washing through the city streets.
Painting everything in their path.

He blinked. Once. Twice. No, the images were still there. Alexander looked around the illusion in confusion. Weren't they just in some misty patch of forest?

So this was the ability of the viewer or whatever it was called... He had only vaguely remembered it.

"Shyde." A new voice came out of the forest. A level, unemotional voice. The images vanished, as Shyde whirled around and dropped to his knees in the mist.
"Avis!" He gasped.
The man that stepped out of the forest was small and slender. Not a fighter in build. His features were delicate and neutral; there was no emotion in his expression. His light brown hair stood in a mop on his head, his pale eyes glowing in the shadows. He wore a dark cloak and vest, clothing of the 19th century.
There were five other figures gathered behind him. The woman Evangeline, impatient Phillipe, a man with insanity in his eyes, a free-spirited teen, and a boy who could not have reached his tenth birthday. They hovered behind him, as though held back by some sort of invisible force. It was a force that all of them could feel. This man exuded an aura of undeniable calm and complete power.
He was dangerous.
And yet... not.

Valian listened to what the others said and he started thinkinking about what this could mean.the others had been asking questations and seemed depressed. Then one of them said some thing about him not walking. That stung alittle bit and then he smiled." So I'm in I quess, but how am I gonna do any thing with out legs"? He tapped the wheel chair and slightly frowned. He was probably the only useless person her. He didn't care but if he could do any thing he would.. " I also noticed that women seems very angry, I know a place where she can get some weed that would calm her down". Turning the wheel chair around he started to roll towards the others.

Evangeline gave Valian a seething look.
"Calm, Eva," Avis' voice did not change at all. But Evangeline calmed noticeably.
"You would receive Eva's ring," Avis told Valian, "Or, a ring identical to it. Forged from the stone of the Bringer's Gate." He glanced at the woman again, "Show him what can be done, Eva."
Evangeline glared at Avis. Then she vanished, reappearing on the other side of the clearing.

He watched them with a little interest and saw her vanish and reappear. " well you have me conveinced to join, but do I have to hang out with her cause she is to grumpy for me". He smiled at her then looked at the man" so what am I taking out and how are we being armed"? If they where going up againts odd they would need weapons and skills to do what ever it took.

" so a bringer, what do I do then"?

Avis' cold shell cracked a bit. He gave a small chuckle.
"Slow down, Valian," He soothed, "And Shyde... get off your knees. We're friends, remember?"
Shyde sprang to his feet.

Faith was curious now. She eyed the others, as the images flashed through her memories again. The man had said illusions. Slowly, she rose to her feet, watching Avis.

There was something...different about him. The eighteen year old couldn't quite place it.

She spoke softly. "Who.....?"

Alexander studied Avis, he seemed like he was the leader with the way all the others acted in his presence.

Hunter huh.... He thought blandly. What could he do with that? He clenched his hand into a fist for a moment before relaxing it.

The old man... would he be able to find his soul? He shivered as the now confirmed memories returned to him.
The gore and blood that had covered the room prominent in the forefront of his mind.

Faith didn't finish. She just shook her head sharply. It didn't matter. She opened her hands, turning them towards her. They seemed so far away....

She looked up again, her eyes dark, but unreadable. She remained silent just...waiting.

But then, she licked her lips and spoke, her voice growing in strength and conviction as she uttered the question. "Who gave you the right?" she demanded quietly. "To choose who gets a second chance?"

Avis' eyes met hers evenly.
"I do not have the right," He breathed, power flashing behind his eyes, "I am allowed to search only for those who might replace me and my Guardians. You have the right to choose whether or not you get your second chance."

"It always has been," Avis murmured, then glanced around him, at his Guardians.
"Follow us, if you are willing to help us. If not... I pray that you be one of the few to find peace in death."
And without another word, he turned through his Guardians and folded into the mist. The others were quick to follow, leaving only Shyde and the five-year-old boy behind.

Alexander listened intently, pulling his knees to his chest and crossing his arms on top of them. He stared at the mist passively.

But on the inside, one of the many shattered pieces boiled in anger and revenge-lust. Those people that killed the one good thing in his life... How could he rest in peace knowing what had happened and that he was the reason for it. The old man... would he be able to find his soul? The gang... he wanted to annihilate them. His hand twitched as the blackest of his thoughts took over.
His restored voice rang out against the oppressive silence.

"I'll do it."
