Mary

"You're all so entertaining."

a character in “The Gathering of Birthstones”, as played by Captain Obvious

Description

Image
ABOUT ME
My month: October
The birthstone I am: Opal
You can also call me: Mary
I appear to be 17, but I am really 77
I am a: Female
How I act : Mary is childish, cheerful, somewhat selfish at times, and mildly insane. Seeing as she's now out of the painting-world she's unlikely to have any violent outbursts though. Probably. She has also mellowed somewhat in the eight years since she escaped her painting, though mostly because the world outside is less maddening. Mary has an odd ability to forget anything she does wrong, sometimes immediately, presumably to avoid feeling guilty of any wrongdoings, at least in her own eyes. Similarly, she will attempt to avoid any discussion of her own mistakes. Mary is fairly friendly, but lacks social skills and has only a vague understanding of empathy. Mary is easily distracted and filled with wonder about the world.
OTHER INFORMATION
I absolutely adore these!:
☑ Disturbing dolls, that she thinks are cute for some reason
☑ Anything new
☑ Colorful flowers
☑ Not being confined in a painting for the rest of her existence
☑ Drawing, though her skills are... somewhat lacking
I despise these things with a passion!:
☒ "Garry"
☒ Fire, for obvious reasons
☒ Computers, as she can't seem to figure them out
☒ She tends to avoid paintings, just in case
☒ Being reminded of Ib's visit to the art gallery, for numerous reasons
Love interest: None at the moment
Quotes: "There are so many new things out there, I have to hurry just to catch up."
FINAL INFORMATION
Other: Mary perceives herself as having been out of her painting for eight years now, and while her physical appearance supports this, Ib's visit to the gallery was only a short while ago. This may be due to Mary's unreliable perception of events, or it could be due to something else.

Theme song: Puppet

Mary frowned as she approached the mansion. She knew she was late, but then again she had been rather preoccupied when she received the invitation. Mary made a mental note never to go to Maine again, especially if her power was acting up. It had been a long time since she had escaped the fabricated world with the help of a hooded stranger, and in that time she had hung around in a hotel in New York, spent some time in a supposedly peaceful resort town in Maine, and briefly took up residence in a hotel somewhere in Colorado. None of these had ended very well.

It was then she had received the invitation and began making her way to La Maison des Joyuax. Now, several days after she had begun her journey, she had finally arrived at the front door. Without hesitation she knocked rather loudly on the door and waited for someone to come to answer it.

Devan smiled. "Nice power you have there, Marina- if you don't mind me calling you that." He watched as the gravy had been levitated into the air and the mess cleaned up in no time. Suddenly, Devan heard someone knocking on the door. "Another birthstone?" Devan muttered. He smiled, wondering who would be next to come through those doors.

"I'll get it." Devan called out, and ran to the front door. He dusted himself off a little, cleaning off some of the more visible and apparent signs of the mess of his clothes, and smiled brightly. He opened the door. "Welcome!" He greeted the newcomer, still not aware of who it actually was. "What birthstone are y-"

And that's when he realized something. The person at the door... Oh... My... Fucking.... God... "Mary?!" Devan-or now Garry, as he would be called by the newcomer- yelped and fell back. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!" He crawled backwards a little, then stood up quickly. "Listen, I know what I did to you in that... hellhole, was harsh and all, but I had no choice! You were chasing us with a knife and..." His mouth went dry. He noticed the physical features of Mary. She had grown in height by a lot. She had more curves, a larger... bust... and she looked.. Well, stunning. At least, compared to the one in back in the art gallery. "What the hell happened to you...?" He muttered.

Mary was surprised to see him here, and apparently he hadn't been expecting her either. "I was invited here. And are you referring to before or after you reduced me to a smoking pile of ashes?" It then occurred to her that he may have meant her change in appearance since they last met. "Well it's been eight years since then. What were you expecting?" After a moment of consideration she added, "Wait, what are you doing here? This place can't possibly be yours. Where's this Aquamarine person I was supposed to meet?"

This was unbelievably frustrating. After reading the letter, Mary had thought that she might finally have found a place where she could belong, and now he was here. That would have been great if she had been wanting to be burred to death, or falcon punched into unconsciousness again, but astonishingly enough she had not.

"Eight years...? Its only been 20 minutes since Ib and I escaped..." Devan- or Garry now- was confused. "Was it really ThAT long in your perspective?" He scratched the back of his head, wondering what had happened to his old.... "friend." "Anway.... I was invited here as well. Apparently, we are all birthstones. Including you, which I am still trying to process how that could happen. I am also the former birthstone of Jue, Onyx..." Devan sighed.

"Anyway, if you're invited here, you must also be a birtstone... The question is which one?" Devan added. He noticed his heart was beating faster. He tried to calm himself down before getting a heart attack. "Look, Mary... I know we had our differences and all... But we are probably gonna end up living together... That's why I'm going to say this now. I'm really, REALLY sorry for what I did to you back in the Fabricated World. I saw what you wanted to become. I regret it. That's why I'm telling you this now, before you meet everyone else. I'm sorry." during his rant of apology, Gary averted his gaze. He did feel ashamed for burning Mary back in the art gallery, but he had no choice. It was either he and Ib or Mary... And he chose Mary.

"So.... Let's shake on it...?" Gary offered a hand. "By the way, if you see a total dick-wad roaming around the house acting like a royal pain in the ass, that's Charlie. I suggest you try and shut him out if he tries to insult you." Gary attempted to make a joke and smiled a bit.

Mary wanted to remain angry, but Garry had made a good point and seemed genuinely sorry. Plus, it was difficult to hold a grudge for eight years without occasionally thinking about it. Mary smirked before giving Garry a light punch on the shoulder."Actually I've been wandering the Earth for eight years now, so yes that's how long it's been. Anyways, I'm Opal, which I could have inherited from Guertena, since I may or may not be infused with a large part of his soul." Honestly she didn't really know how she was a birthstone, it was just her best guess.

Leaning around Garry to look into the mansion, Mary asked, "So where are all the others? Have they arrived yet?" Maybe she wasn't quite as late as she thought.

Devan looked behind him. "Everyone else either are in their rooms, outside, or still eating dinner." He responded. "In total, not counting you, me, and Aquamrine, there are nine people. Don't worry. We were all late." Garry smiled as he took out a few roses. "I actually kept these, and picked another red rose." They were blue, yellow, and red. "I wanted to fully remember the time I had bonding with you two, and I want to remember to look harder for other options in a life-threatening situation."

Devan looked back, then looked at Mary. "So... What happened in your life while you were gone...?"

Mary stared nervously at the yellow rose in Garry's hand. It was unlikely that there was any connection between it and her, despite what she had once pretended. Still...

"So... What happened in your life while you were gone...?"

Mary looked up at his question and shook her head to clear it of the previous thoughts. "Well first I ended up in some resort hotel in Colorado. That didn't end well. Actually I don't think any of my visits to places have gone well." She frowned. "My... ability keeps making trouble, so I can't stay in one place for too long. I'm hoping that this one will be different, since the others are here too."

Meanwhile Garnet looked around the dining room. It had seemed that everyone else had left, other than those who didn't seem inclined to converse at the moment. January's birthstone took his dishes and put them away in the kitchen, rinsed out the cup, which was the only thing he'd used, and began looking for Aqua to tell her he was finished eating, as instructed.

When he finally located their host, Garnet saw that she was speaking with Charlie. He hesitated, not wanting to interrupt, before finally deciding to follow Aqua's earlier instructions. "Excuse me, you said to come let you know when we were done eating? I've finished. Thank you again."

"Ah... Alright then." Devan answered back. "That must've sucked." He chuckled a little bit.

Devan snapped his fingers. "Oh, right... Ib is still alive. However, she's still 9 years old." Devan mentioned. "In your perspective, it might have been eight years. In mine, only 20 minutes have passed." Devan thought about the logic in it, then shook his head as well. "i'm not going to quesetion it. I'm tired of all these strange crap happening to me, especially today. Then I met a person who will become my friend. Apparently, he knows the past, present, and future. Puzzling, huh?" Devan smiled even more.

Devan gave Mary the yellow rose, then looked around for a vase. Giving up, he shrugged and looked back a little. "So... You want to join all of us for dinner? Some may be done, but it's okay. The food is still there, mainly because there was so much..." Devan laughed.

(I accidentally tagged Michael. Disregard it.)

Mary couldn't repress a sigh of relief at being handed the rose. It probably wasn't directly tied to her life-force or anything, but she still didn't feel like finding out that it was.

"That is puzzling." That was all Mary could think to say on the subject of perception of time and omniscient future friends. Quickly moving to a subject that didn't endanger her sanity Mary addressed his question. "I'd love to join everyone for diner."

Devan smiled. "Alright. Just take my hand and we can shadow travel there." He said. At least she isn't trying to kill me, or Ib. Devan thought. Then he realized something. He told Ib the same thing, when a fake copy of her mother came to lead her away. A flod of memories rushed through him, but only for a split second. Then he shook his head and said "Are you coming?"

Mary stepped forward hesitantly. She wasn't exactly keen on traveling through shadows. Then again, the first step toward burying the hatchet was trust. Besides, nothing was to be gained through hesitation and she did want to fit in with the others, Garry included. Nodding, Mary took his hand with a smile. "Alright, let's go."

Hopefully his ability wasn't anything like hers, otherwise this wouldn't be the most pleasant journey imaginable. Then again, her ability didn't allow for teleportation, so there it was. Mary wondered idly what the others could do. So far they seemed mostly based in darkness, though that wasn't saying much considering she only knew Garry's and her own elements.
