History

Robert was born and raised in a small farming town in northern Iowa. His early life was uneventful, consisting mainly of farm chores, school, friends, and family. At a young age Robert showed a certain affinity for machines, particularly in operating them. At the age of 14 he started to learn how to fly, and at the age of 16 he started flying crop dusters for the local farmers, earning him the nickname and call sign of Dusty once he joined the service. Graduating in high school in 1941 Robert continued flying in his crop duster job, however was looking to possibly expand his horizons in the coming year. The opportunity to do so was both unpleasant and unexpected.

Angered by the attack on Pearl Harbor, Robert enlisted in the US Navy, looking to become a Naval Aviator. He was sworn in on the 1st of January, 1942. Due to his previous flying experience he breezed through flight training. At the end, however, he was disappointed to find out that he lacked the necessary instincts and reflexes to be a fighter pilot. However despite these short comings, and possibly because of them, that he would make an excellent pilot for a Torpedo Bomber and soon found himself training in one of the new TBF Avengers. In August of the same year he was assigned to the newly formed VC-9. In December the squadron was attached to the Escort Carrier U.S.S. Bogue. He spent the next years hunting German U-boats, and sinking a few, in the Atlantic serving on the Bogue, Card, Mission Bay, and Solomons. At the end of 1944 the squadron was transferred to the Pacific, starting combat operations there in March of '45 finally allowing Robert the opportunity that Robert had wanted since that fateful Sunday in 1941, an opportunity to strike back at the Empire of Japan. Station aboard the Natoma Bay the squadron participated in combat operations in and around Okinawa until the ship was struck by a kamikaze on June 7 and was forced to head back to the West Coast for Repairs. VC-9 was deactivated later that year at Arlington, Washington. After the squadron's deactivation Robert flew C-47 Skytrains (known as R4Ds in the Navy) giving him experience in flying twin-engined aircraft that he hoped would be valuable in pursuing a career in aviation as a civilian. Robert was Honorably Discharged from service in 1946.

While Robert dated during his school years, he never went steady with anyone. While he figured it was probably a good things he wasn't attached to anyone while we was out at war, he did feel somewhat of a lose from the fact that there was no one special waiting for him back home and that the only letters he got were from family with the occasional one from a student at a local school. Robert tried not to focus to much on thoughts like this while he was serving, but with the war over and his service at an end, he's ready to start his new life and can't help but wonder if he can find that special someone to start it with him.

So begins...
