a character in “The Great Guild Fortune”, as played by druidquest

Description

"You want me to say something? Like anything? Did you want my sage advice or did you just miss my amazing voice?"

ImageName: Samyan Zaheer
Sex: Female
Age: Forever 23
Race: Ashura

Physical Description: Samyan is a young ashura woman with long white hair and yellow eyes. Her hair is worn down, with a thick long sticking up in front and hanging in front of her face. She has pale blue skin that is soft and unblemished, as if she's never worked a day in her life.
Clothing: A black yukata tied loosely with a black obi, often showing the short white nagajuban underneath. She wears black han-kote and suneate as well, though if there were a full suit of armor to go with them, she doesn't have it.
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 185 lbs
Skin Colour: Pale blue
Hair Colour: White, oddly
Eye Colour: Yellow

Occupation: Treasure hunter, apparently
History/Bio: Samyan presents herself as a vagrant from the southern edge of Vahira's territories. Allegedly, her father died in the war when she was very young, and she was sold into slavery by her poor, desperate mother to feed her eight starving siblings. She worked tirelessly for many years to a cruel and abusive master, before finally making her escape when the area was attacked by Yunean soldiers. She wandered for many days and nights, constantly on the verge of starvation or under threat by dangerous brigands, before finally making it back home, only to find, much to her dismay, that her family had all died only a few weeks earlier when the town was ravaged by plague. All except for the youngest - her baby brother, Simyin. The two traveled far afield, Samyan resorting to many heinous crimes to provide for him… until the fateful day came when he was killed by a gang Samyan had crossed. She fell into despair, taking her first life that day as she killed many on a rampage of senseless revenge. With no one left in the world beside her, Samyan took to walking the earth as a treasure hunter forevermore.
Home Town: Claims to be from Bargadi in Ashuran Sune, but those more familiar with the empire might note her accent and dialect are those of Kashran, the empire's capital.
Home Country: Vahira, Empire of the Ashura

Personality: Narcissistic and air-headed. Speaks in a fairly soft, deadpan manner which can distract from the fast she's completely out of her mind.
Fears and Desires: Hates responsibility, loves dicking around doing her own thing.

Equipment and Weapons: A large grass-cutting scythe.
Styles and Abilities: Though she doesn't use any specific styles, Samyan has clearly received a great deal of training at some point in her life.
Chi and Augmentations: Augmentations to her muscle strength and bone durability, as well as an odd form of necromancy which allows her to stitch herself back together in the middle of combat, from most any injury.

"You're right, it isn't," Takai replied to Ren, "Look, I know you're angry Samyan, but messing with the spiritual lives of innocent people isn't going to help you in the long term. Let's not tarnish the name of the Great Guild Fortune just yet."

He paused and squinted at Makoko's tent mysteriously.

"Nah, I think there's a better way we can cheat our way to winning, a way that will bring justice to Makoko and rescue Kaor and Wun all at once," he grinned, "Some good ol' fashioned sabotage."

Samyan sighed through her nose, leaning back against one of the carts. The oni being contrarian was to be expected, but did the rest of these really need to be so defiant all the time? The sheer misguided willfulness of these foreign children never failed to provide a source of frustration.

"We are doing this," she began slowly, enunciating each word as if trying to force comprehension upon them, "because it is the way it needs to be done. Our beloved ringmaster has a veritable army hidden within those tents, many of whom I suspect to be some small selection of the most competent individuals to be found outside Vashira. This little contest is nothing more than a sideshow as far as their master is concerned, and any attempt to win in a respectable manner is damned to failure.

"Were circumstances ideal, I would have simply plucked out that pompous little man's heart the moment he so much as entertained the thought that he could make property of me, however as it stands I am bound by my word to make no direct move against he or his. Sabotage, while a cute proposition, would be discovered almost immediately by the nigh thousand eyes which fill the big top alone, and so, despite your immature little cultural reservations regarding my craft, it presents the swiftest and safest path to our success and your guild master's continued survival."

"Our guild master," she corrected with a thin smile at Fortune. Samyan's gaze flicked back toward the oni and rabbit for a moment, considering each of them before she sighed again and rolled her eyes. "The villagers won't be harmed. The won't even remember anything come sunrise."

"If Takai has a plan, I say we give him a chance to explain," Suiken interjected. "I don't want to risk subjecting the villagers to any sort of necromancy, benign or not."

Gonpo nodded with approval towards Takai and Suiken's words. "Our quarrel is with Makoko and his troupe. We should keep the village out of it as much as we can."

"The villagers are the metric of our contest," Samyan stressed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "They're already a part of it. Clutching your pearls about using them is pointless."

Gonpo's brows shot up. "Clutching... my pearls?" The goblin held up his hands and looked between them. "But I have no pearls."

"So you wish to use them the same as Yuwen used you? Just to save your own skin?" Takai's words were harsh, but his tone was gentle, "Let the dead rest in peace tonight. Not everything is solved through fire and brimstone, sometimes all it takes is being 'cute'. We're here not only to keep you safe and sound in this guild, Samyan, but to rescue our friends and many others trapped in Makoko's circus."

The monkey man sighed and looked at the Ashura with pleading brown eyes, "Trust in us. Don't underestimate our ability to win this together."

"Hmph." Samyan crossed her arms, rising away from the cart. She could get more productive conversations from a brick wall than from this lot. "Do things as you like, then," she said, moving to stroll away.

Twelve hours.

They had twelve hours to get preparations done and as clever as Takai's plan was, there was still a nagging thought at the back of Lo-Muna's mind. A hare's voice whispered to her, whispers only she could hear, that these people had already seen the show before. That sometimes a disaster was more entertaining to watch. That perhaps a back up plan was needed.

"I'm fast and prettier than Fortune so I can work on either team," Lo-Muna volunteered, following suit after Gonpo. "Although, I can help put on a spectacular fight if one of you thinks you can keep up."

Her eyes darted over to Samyan's retreating back and she started walking in her direction, saying to the others, "In fact, let me go see if our Ashuran can't be persuaded to join my act."

She hopped on over to walk alongside Samyan, looking up at her as she asked in a hushed voice so the others wouldn't hear, "Will every single house be necessary? I can only do so much in a couple hours but if I hit a good amount, will it be enough?"

Samyan glanced at the rabbit as she scurried over to walk beside her, her pale blue lips parting ever so slightly in... genuine surprise. Well. It seemed not everyone in this circus was a clown.

"I won't need much time to work with it," she replied softly, not breaking her gait. "A flourish and a wave, nothing more. Its little other than a parlour trick, the material demands are the only portion of significance. I can make do with what you bring me, so long as I have an hour or so before the lights go on."

"Ashura!" Behind Samyan the slap of wooden sandals could be heard against wet ground. Lo-Muna and Samyan both turned to see Captain Jensu run toward them down the dirt path. "You're still planning on cursing the village, aren't you?" Jensu accused, wiping the sweat off their brow as they approached. "Didn't you learn your lesson in the last village?"

"I saved the last village," Samyan answered over her shoulder, waving the goblin away dismissively. "And you, as I recall."

Sunaarashi looked around, more than a little lost as to how he could be helping. All he really knew was combat, although he perhaps could perform the dance of his tribe. It had been a long time since he had performed it, but he remembered the steps like it was yesterday. Would it be appropriate? Suna sighed in exasperation. Cheating or not, they still needed to put on a good show, or so it seemed.

Suna's eyes watched Samyan. Unless the Asura carried through with her plan. He wondered if she had given any thought to how truly reprehensible her idea was. He liked Samyan, but the Asuran seemed to be having a morality crisis. Robbing anyone of their free will, forcing them to behave in a certain way... Slavery of the mind, if not the body. The strong preying upon the weak.

Sunaarashi shook his head. Perhaps he would try to have a talk with the warrior later, although he wondered if she respected him enough to listen & ponder on his words.

But back to his part in this escapade...

"Besides, the whole group expressed their vehement disapproval of said cursing," Lo-Muna pointed out as she began to walk away, towards where Suiken had called her. She paused besides Captain Jensu, looking down at the goblin with a pointed look, "Even me. We were simply discussing an idea I had for an act."

Lo-Muna looked back towards Samyan with a small smile, "Weren't we, Samyan? I'll find you when I have the preparations complete."

The smile became wider, more forced. It no longer reached her eyes as she added with a hint of threat in her voice, "Though I do hope it goes as you said. I'd hate to see what happens if things go awry."

As she continued on her way to Suiken, she noticed the lost look on Sunaarashi's face. Grabbing him by the arm and pulling him towards Yamato and Suiken, she announced loudly, "Oh hey, Sunaarashi's also volunteering. And come on Yamato, costumes can be fun."

She winked.

Yuwen watched as Sunaarashi, Yamato, and Lo-Muna followed Suiken down a mud-path. "Not much of a circus if nobody knows about it," Yuwen spoke to himself. From his robe he pulled out a piece of parchment, small like most of the unlimited supply he seemed to keep on his person. He placed it on the wooden seat of the first wagon and began to unfold it, again and again, revealing it to be a massive piece of paper. Yuwen grinned before looking back at Namari, who watched him critically. "What? Haven't you ever heard the quill is mightier than the sword?" Yuwen asked. He shook his head as he turned to the paper. "Luckily for your my penmanship is as good as my skill a blade..." He hummed as he began to paint...

***

Xanth stood in the open cage, bare-feet on cold iron. The black room of Makoko's circus was lit by only a few dim torches near the entrance curtain. They danced, Xanth's shadow stretching forward onto the mountain of mass that consumed the back of the cage. Xanth could feel the cage shake as the creature turned and slumped over on her side. Kaor's furry carcass inflated and deflated with each breath, hairs matted with dry blood and half-healed wounds rising and falling in and out of the firelight. And then, from the shadows, a paw extended. Though frail the paw consumed Xanth's hand in its touch.

"Oh... you've come for me, beloved little gecko... I always... knew you would."

***

"Dadadadadadadada Circus! Dadadadadadadada Yuwen! Circus Yuwen! Circus Yuwen! Polka dot polka dot polka dot Yuwen!" Yuwen announced loudly as he emerged into the Ginori marketplace,. A sign hung from his body, vivid ink paintings of the Great Guild members in heroic poses surrounded by the elements on it, and in the centre the character reading: THE GREAT GUILD'S FABULOUS CIRCUS FORTUNE. It was beautiful and lush, and Yuwen Fortune was doing all he could to attract attention. "I SAY GOOD MAN!" Yuwen said, the parchment poncho of a sign flapping as he approached a group of teenagers at a vegetable stall. "DO YOU WANT TO SEE THE FUTURE?"

***

"I'm not letting you out of my sight," Jensu threatened Samyan.

Before Ren's eyes, the group was split seemingly in twain. Or perhaps several ways in twain. There were those going to prepare for their 'acts', those preparing for sabotage, Yuwen acting as their promoter, and Samyan doing... Samyan things. She, now more than before, was particularly troubling to the swordsman. Before, he wondered if her antics were those of an absent minded sort of person, but the way she spoke had far more intent and intelligence to it than he initially gave her credit for. No, she was well thought out, operated with intent, and cunning. That didn't mean she was evil or anything, but it did mean she was likely fully aware of any actions she took, and that would warrant an entirely new perspective of her.

But, for now, that was neither here nor there. They needed to get their friends (and friends of friends) back from the clutches of Makoko, and Ren was left wondering how best he could contribute. In the end, he was mainly left on his own, so he opted then to operate on his own, in one of the only ways he knew how:

Using personal experience.

Now, Ren wasn't an actor or performer by any means, but he'd seen plenty of theater back in Yeuxkyen. And so, in the vein of that, he grabbed his coin purse and headed deeper into the village. He sought out weavers of fine, bright garments, preferably those covered in red and gold, whether or not they were intended for men or women was irrelevant, he'd make due (it wouldn't be fancy, but it didn't have to be). Then, it was makeup and face paints; red, white, and black. He grinned to himself as he envisioned it all coming together. He'd probably need to 'borrow' Master Wang Chang later from Yuwen, as well as some sort of staff or spear.

Oh yes, and potent liquor...

His eyes landed on one last item, something he'd nearly forgotten, but so so obvious as soon as his eyes landed upon it, he grinned as he ran over to an old village man, with a long, flowing dark beard.

"Excuse me sir," Ren began.

"But might I be able to purchase your beard from you?" He asked with eager intent.

The man's eyes alighted with astonishment. "NO! What? NO! Are you crazy! Whatsamatter with you! Coming around here to buy a beard! What are you, some kinda psycho? Some kinda sicko?"

Ren dropped a hefty some of gold coins on the man's lap. "Please, sir, I promise to put it to great use."

The man looked up at Ren in disgust.

______________________________________________________________________________

A short while later, the old man sat pensively counting his gold coins, while Ren walked away with his bolt of facial hair in hand, whistling happily to himself as he went. Now to find a tent where he could begin to prepare himself for his own performance later. He'd almost wished there were more articles he could purchase from his homeland, but alas, this was rural Yune, villagers like these were unlikely to care for items of interest from far off lands.

But, what he had managed to acquire would suffice. He felt a little giddy to be honest, but also anxious. Despite the fact that this was all mostly a rouse, he did have a vested interest now in trying to do as well as possible. But he'd just have to put himself out there, give his all, and hope for the best.
