A Wandering Street Musician who knows more than he lets on

0 · 2,533 views · located in The Horat-verse

a character in “The Great Guild Fortune”, as played by PirateofPie

Description

"And this is the important part...I hope you're paying attention..."

ImageName: Suiken
Sex: Male
Age: 55
Race: Oni

Physical Description: A tall, but fairly stout looking Oni. His horns appear partially sawed off and by the look of them, it wasn't his doing. He also has two blue tusks and a more than a couple of scars on his face Due to the blue hue of his skin, one could easily tell he belongs to the Snow Oni tribe. You know the one's that seek to conquer with war. Despite the negative connotation, he's so popular a street musician, most don't care. Unless an invading Oni army arrives the next day...
Clothing: Sports several shirts and leggings carved from various arctic beasts. Most notably tiger's fur. Sports either a green or black stormcloak during rainy seasons.
Height: 6'7 ft
Weight: 447 lb
Skin Colour: Blue
Hair Colour: Black with gray streaks
Eye Colour: Black

Occupation: Wandering Street Musician/Storyteller
History/Bio: He leaves town as quickly as he arrives, playing music and telling stories is how he thrives. Reciting legends from far and wide, honing his craft in every land he spies. The reason he does this is largely unknown, but...there is one thing that his exploits have shown and it's that he's no simple wanderer, no traveling fool. His martial skills are too great, too complex and he's not one to loose his cool. Perhaps he was a warrior in a past that goes on unsaid, but if you'd ask him about he'd sigh and say the past is long dead...
Home Town: Grand Onikuni (capital of Onium)
Home Country: Empire of Onium

Personality: Suiken is contemplative, stubborn, and kind. Especially to those in misfortune. Occasionally, he tends to overcalculate things though.
Fears and Desires: He fears oppression from those with the power to do so and how that they'll abuse their power to manipulate others. HE also despises cheap pork buns. He desires more knowledge of secretive matters...as well as crafted pork buns.

Equipment and Weapons: In Suiken's case, his element and weapon coincide. He sports twin Fang Daggers. Oni built weapons ripped from the maw of the largest of mountain dwelling beasts. They're so permanently cold to the touch that only oni of ice can master such an unorthodox weapon. Once they hit an opponent, they get a feeling of intense cold, but it doesn't literally freeze their bodies.

These daggers seem to have special properties when around spirit-realm energy...
Styles and Abilities: Sumo- A martial art that is practiced to various degrees across a few countries but is especially popular amongst Oni. Respected among them for it's adherence to matters of the spiritual, most Oni who practice it are held in high regard.
Chi and Augmentations: Suiken can use his chi to move swiftly along the currents of wind, resulting in the ability to move swiftly with sudden force in the Fall. In other seasons, this ability has even more unique properties.

So begins...

"Strange," Lo-Muna commented on the sight of the red oni, hanging at the back of the small group. She ts'ked, knowing her time was running. Suiken's idea had been nice but it was already looking like it would take far too long. Even more so if they had to deal with a member of Makoko's circus. There was the potential the fire oni could have been sent to purposefully interfere and it was a chance Lo-Muna didn't want to take.

"Suiken, I have some business to attend to in order to get my act together so I'll be taking my leave now," Lo-Muna called out to the blue oni as she moved to leave. She paused and then turned to look at Suna over her shoulder.

"Sunaarashi, if you're still in need of something to do in a couple hours, wait for me by our wagons. I'm in need of a partner for my act and I feel you and I would be a good fit considering your display earlier," she said before running off, not waiting for an answer.

Collecting dirt on all the houses in Ginori was going to take quite a bit of time after all.

"Oh, all right Lo-Muna," Suna said, frowning slightly as the young woman walked away. He recalled her saying something about sparring. Turning to the others, he glanced at the fire oni. "One of Makoko's troupe? Should we kill him?"

Yamato blinked, replaying Suna's words in his head. He had heard him correctly. "Didn't think you'd be the one to offer that suggestion so quickly. Better to see if we can't get information out of him first."

Suiken nodded as Lo-Muna went to attend her other duties. They had only a few more bundles of bamboo to get before they headed back into town to set up the tents and for Suiken to craft some props. As for what to do with their would be rival....

Another rock was launched the fire oni's way via his own telekichisis, dust kicking up from the forest floor as it rushed towards him and was met with his club, knocking the rock into the sky and splitting it in two separate directions. "Not enough finesse..." the fire oni muttered to himself. He lowered his club down, tapping it against the ground twice before getting back into his stance and lifting up a new rock.

"One of Makoko's troupe? Should we kill him?"

"Didn't think you'd be the one to offer that suggestion so quickly. Better to see if we can't get information out of him first."

In minutes it became as if time stood still as all grew silent in the bamboo thicket. Animals hiding amidst the greenery began to flee, taking to the skies or further into the brush. The bamboo itself began to sway backwards facing pressure as if facing pressure akin to hurricane force winds when the oni made his approach, though the afternoon was calm, with no breeze to speak of. A scowl grew on his face as he turned to face the group, slinging the club over his shoulder.

He only faced them for but a second, acknowledging Yamato first. "Hatago Warrior?" he questioned in a somewhat alarmingly lackadaisical tone. But after a moment, he sighed. And the surrounding nature breathed a sigh of relief. "No..." he sighed, not betraying any particular emotion. "Stronger than them. By some small margin, anyway..." With that, he simply turned away with that, walking back towards Ginori, it seemed.

"Is that...why you work with Makoko's Circus, fire-brother? To fight the Hatago Warriors?" Suiken inquired, using friendly terms not used between the two Oni races in quite some time.

"Well, yeah. ...That and I kinda lost a bet with the bastard. As far as the Hatago go...you guys got to 'em first, from what I can gather..." the Fire Oni sighed, scratching his mustache. "They're more worth your time than mine, anyway..." Finished with the conversation, the Fire Oni simply went on his way, back towards the tent of Makoko's Circus.

"Suna..." Suiken shook his head in astonishment. "Killing that one would be beyond our capabilities, I'm afraid. His words confirmed it for me, he's one of The Hunters Nine. You must've heard of them in your travels, correct?" Suiken continued. "Anyone who's found themselves in the mercenary trade has..."

"The Hunter of Beasts. The Hunter of Dragons. The Hunter of Man. The Hunter of Tengu. The Hunter of Hunters. The Hunter of Oni. The Hunter of Yokai. The Hunter of Kitsune. The Hunter of Gods. They have no affiliation with one another. They're not a guild nor are they a clan. They're recognized with such grandiose titles based on their skill alone and while they specialize in combatting their chosen prey, in all matters of combat they are some of the most formidable foes one could face in all the land."

"That Makoko has the Hunter of Tengu under his employ isn't something to take lightly," Suiken concluded with a warning. "So, now that we know what we're up against...we should hurry up, eh?" he chuckle and despite the ever stacking odds, he got right to work.

"Hmph," Suna said, watching the fire oni leave. "Perhaps not everyone in the circus is as deplorable as their leader then. I shall adjust my expectations accordingly." The man paused, reflecting on his own title that he had often been gifted. Hunter. After a moment, Suna shrugged. He doubted it meant anything.

Before Ren's eyes, the group was split seemingly in twain. Or perhaps several ways in twain. There were those going to prepare for their 'acts', those preparing for sabotage, Yuwen acting as their promoter, and Samyan doing... Samyan things. She, now more than before, was particularly troubling to the swordsman. Before, he wondered if her antics were those of an absent minded sort of person, but the way she spoke had far more intent and intelligence to it than he initially gave her credit for. No, she was well thought out, operated with intent, and cunning. That didn't mean she was evil or anything, but it did mean she was likely fully aware of any actions she took, and that would warrant an entirely new perspective of her.

But, for now, that was neither here nor there. They needed to get their friends (and friends of friends) back from the clutches of Makoko, and Ren was left wondering how best he could contribute. In the end, he was mainly left on his own, so he opted then to operate on his own, in one of the only ways he knew how:

Using personal experience.

Now, Ren wasn't an actor or performer by any means, but he'd seen plenty of theater back in Yeuxkyen. And so, in the vein of that, he grabbed his coin purse and headed deeper into the village. He sought out weavers of fine, bright garments, preferably those covered in red and gold, whether or not they were intended for men or women was irrelevant, he'd make due (it wouldn't be fancy, but it didn't have to be). Then, it was makeup and face paints; red, white, and black. He grinned to himself as he envisioned it all coming together. He'd probably need to 'borrow' Master Wang Chang later from Yuwen, as well as some sort of staff or spear.

Oh yes, and potent liquor...

His eyes landed on one last item, something he'd nearly forgotten, but so so obvious as soon as his eyes landed upon it, he grinned as he ran over to an old village man, with a long, flowing dark beard.

"Excuse me sir," Ren began.

"But might I be able to purchase your beard from you?" He asked with eager intent.

The man's eyes alighted with astonishment. "NO! What? NO! Are you crazy! Whatsamatter with you! Coming around here to buy a beard! What are you, some kinda psycho? Some kinda sicko?"

Ren dropped a hefty some of gold coins on the man's lap. "Please, sir, I promise to put it to great use."

The man looked up at Ren in disgust.

______________________________________________________________________________

A short while later, the old man sat pensively counting his gold coins, while Ren walked away with his bolt of facial hair in hand, whistling happily to himself as he went. Now to find a tent where he could begin to prepare himself for his own performance later. He'd almost wished there were more articles he could purchase from his homeland, but alas, this was rural Yune, villagers like these were unlikely to care for items of interest from far off lands.

But, what he had managed to acquire would suffice. He felt a little giddy to be honest, but also anxious. Despite the fact that this was all mostly a rouse, he did have a vested interest now in trying to do as well as possible. But he'd just have to put himself out there, give his all, and hope for the best.

"Hunter of Tengu you say?" Yamato inquired, watching the Fire Oni walk away. The Ronin was a little insulted, but the idea of an Oni whose sole purpose boiled down to hunting Tengu intrigued him. Yamato made a mental note to keep tabs on this "Hunter".

The group returned from the bamboo forest and got to work setting up the tent, utilizing the tarp lying in the Guild's wagon along with the taller bundles of bamboo. There wasn't much paint for sale in town, but with what they could muster, the three gathered some red and gold paint. The result was a modest sized tent compared to their rivals but just flashy enough to attract the eye of the locals.

Luckily ,the bamboo cutters were kind enough to lend them some space near their lodge as thanks. Suiken turned to Yamato and Sunaarashi and nodded. "Well, once you find Lo-Muna and anyone else who wants to get in on performing, I suggest we all meet here and work out what we're going to do. Until, then...I'll be at work," He nodded at Yamato and Sunaarashi, seeing them off for now before going back to work. This time, he'd make use of the smaller bamboo bundles they'd collected.

In the distance, Suiken saw Yuwen promoting the circus with a horrendous jingle that one cannot help but lodge in the ear until the end of time. "Well, if it's unforgettable, it certainly helps..." the Snow Oni muttered to himself as he set to carving the bamboo.

"Fortune!" Suiken called over to Yuwen where he, Sunaarashi, and Yamato stood. The tent was set up and swiftly painted as best they could. Now all to be done was figure out how they would conduct the makeshift circus.

"Yeah, a hot hottie," another nasally youth spoke up with a grunt and a chortle. He glanced over and his eyes widened. Grabbing his friend's shoulder and shaking it violently, he pointed to something in the distance, exclaiming, "Like that one! With the big melons!"

Yuwen and company would look over to see Lo-Muna holding two large melons. She was handing them over to a young woman with sweat on her brow and clearly out of breath. An old woman was beside her, berating the young woman for being late and thanking Lo-Muna for her help.

As the two went on their way, Lo-Muna's eyes met the gaze of her fellow guild members. When she had returned to the wagons and found Takai and Gonpo gone, she decided it had been for the best. There was only so much she could do and Takai had seemed capable. Gonpo had also appeared competent, a hunter being no easy undertaking for a goblin.

She smirked at Fortune and gave a little wave to all of them before bending down to pick up a somewhat full cloth bag at her feet. Then in a blink she was gone.

"Suiken!" Yuwen said, turning as the Snow-Oni ran toward him. The elderly man rose a hand proudly at their tent in the distance. It was large, not as large as Makoko's but still higher than the other huts in the town. The tent itself seemed hastily knit, mismatched pieces of found fabric along it. Yuwen frowned at a pair of silken pants stitched into the weave. "Did you get that out of my wagon?!" Yuwen exclaimed, turning to Suiken. "You're uh showin' everybody- me underwears."

Suddenly another teen spoke up, hunger in his voice. Yuwen turned as Lo-Muna passed through, the market agape at her beauty. Yuwen rose an eyebrow at the woman before turning to the teens. "You're saying if she performed... you'd go to my circus?" Yuwen questioned. The teens all nodded eagerly. Yuwen sighed before turning, only to see Lo-Muna had vanished. "Suiken, with me," Yuwen said, pulling off his mobile advertisement and throwing it to the side. He ran forward, to the centre of the market, his companions behind him. "Where did that stupid bunny go?"

***

Jensu frowned at the metaphor as the six armed menace placed hands along the door of the tomb. The goblin was sure at any moment the blue muscles would pulse as Samyan defiled yet another sacred place. "Tombs aren't empty cups, and bodies aren't water, or whatever you're trying to say!" Jensu whined. "You can't drink a body, a tomb can't save you from an ocean of thirst. You've clearly never been to sea!"

***

Shang-Lo cried as the hound mawed his ankle. The sensational circus man was too distracted to notice Xanth leap out from behind him. Suddenly he felt nimble feet on each of his shoulders. He looked up to see Xanth crouched atop him, her hands move for his throat- a knife in one. Suddenly, Shang-Lo exhaled. A blast of air channeled out of the man's nose, knocking Xanth's knife wielding hand down and pushing the dog back across the grassy floors of the tent.

The elderly goblin ran to the bars of his cage, the long white hairs that fell from the sides of his bald head flailing violently with each movement. "Kill her!" The goblin screamed through brittle teeth. "KILL HER!"

Shang-Lo punched backward, his fist colliding with Xanth's side. His chi was mighty: all the power in his body focusing on the impact at the end of his hand. It smashed into Xanth like a ton of bricks, and the assassin flew sideways. Instead of pursuing his tossed target Shang-Lo smashed a barefoot onto the dog's neck, pinning the animal to the ground. He inhaled furiously and raised his knife over the dog, as though preparing to plunge it in like an animal to be sacrificed at an Ashuran altar.

But before he could a new smell invaded the caverns of Shang-Lo's nose. The smell of bear. The circus freak turned to see Kaor, out of her cage, and rising above him. She slashed, making impact with Shang-Lo's rock hard abs, and pushed him off the dog. "Xanth, get out of here! Get to safety!" Kaor urged as Shang-Lo got to his feet again...

***

As Takai and Gonpo discreetly passed through the bustling backstage of Makoko's big-top a familiar voice rang out.

"You buffoon! What do you mean you've lost track of them!"

Makoko, the robed mountain of a man was ahead, a cowering lemur beast-man beneath him.

"There are at least twelve members!" The lemur croaked. "They've been running all over the town, they're planning something!"

"And I want to know what it is!" Makoko said. He kicked the lemur cruelly across the face before turning to a grey salamanderman. He looked meek and tired, his body appearing to be perpetually hunched. "Zhaoprazu, I trust you have an exceptional show planned?"

The salamander swallowed. "Not much deviation from the previous nights, incorporated more of Kaor into the show, firework display at the end," The salamander reported.

"The beast bear?" Makoko snarled. "Yes, well... just make sure whatever you do it knocks Fortune's show out of the water, eh partner?" Makoko gave the salamander a smack on the back before passing. The meek mander watched as the robed figure left and sighed. "Ai s'hara. How did it come to this?" He whispered...

"Stupid bunny?" Suiken questioned, insulted for Lo-Muna. He shook his head. "Either way, I've no clue. I suppose she's making preparations of her own. "And on that note, we should do the same! Not much of a circus if we don't have acts now is it?"

***

As Makoko exited the tent, The Hunter of Tengu, Pounamu Senshu entered. The Fire Oni had nothing to say to his employer. This was but a one time deal of a bet gone awry, but he would still perform his best when it came time for the show. Hearing bits and pieces of the conversation held prior, he was starting to piece some things together about the most recent arrivals in town.

Paying the salamander and lemur beastman no mind, he walked over and took a seat on a crate to eat an orange. Seemed Makoko had a couple of upstarts trying to upend his business. No real concern of his. As long as he did his job, the human should have nothing to whine about.

"Senshu," The salamander called, approaching the Fire Oni. "Makoko wants something exceptional for tonight's show, something new- and since I'm the one doing all the work around here that responsibility falls on me," He murmured, folding his arms and bringing a long finger to his chin. "You've been on stage almost every night this week, you think you can shake it up tonight?"

The salamander paused, as passed Senshu's head were the leering faces of Gonpo and Takai. "I didn't think we had a monkey in our trope," The salamander muttered before placing a hand on Senshu's shoulder and stepping around him. "Greetings, brother. Are you new?" He called to Takai, ignoring Gonpo as another one of the countless goblin assistants under the big top....

***

Yuwen nodded at Suiken's wiseman words. "You're right- I'll host, I'm the best at working a crowd. Suiken, you're the only one of us who is a real performer, if you go first we can start strong... then something dangerous, Yamato maybe? Then we should shake the crowds taste up, get them excited." Yuwen glanced back at the teens in the distance. "Let's have Lo-Muna do whatever it is she's going to do next... who does that leave whose still performing?"

***

Jensu hugged the bag and waddled after Samyan. "You know Ashura, I think I already am," They muttered in reference to being cursed. "Fortune is an idiot but at least he had a simple plan. Somehow all of your plans involve getting naked or defiling the dead."

"Well, if Ren feels up to it, he may have something to offer as well. And as for Samyan..." Suiken glanced around, his eyebrows furrowing with suspicion. "You haven't seen, her around, have you Yuwen? Come to think of it, I'm not sure where Xanth is either, but she may have gone on to....scout out our competition with Gonpo and Takai. Nevertheless, we should regroup to get our acts figured out.

***

Senshu took a bite from the orange, spitting the peel onto the ground. "I'm not sure I'm getting paid enough to 'shake it up'. Hell, I'm not getting paid at all, remember? I'm only here 'cause I lost that stupid bet." The fire oni scratched his head. "Tell ya what...I'll knock it outta the park tonight and you go and tell Makoko we're even! Ain't nobody's dancing monkey..." he scratched the back of his head, before turning to Takai. "Uh, no offense."

"Lao the acrobat? I'm sorry to see you come here, I hope your family is safe," The salamander spoke sadly. "My name is Zhaoprazu. I'm the circus-master... or I was before Makoko bought us out."

The salamander placed a hand on Senshu's shoulder, though the large fire-oni immediately shrugged it away. "This is Pounamu Senshu, one of our star players." Zhaoprazu gave a tired smile to Takai and Gonpo both.

"Maybe we can have Yamato whip out his-" Yuwen brainstormed when suddenly a dog bark caught his ear. Yuwen looked up to the source. Beyond the market-stalls was the hound, collapsing on the sowed dirt of the farmlands beside him the fragile form of Xanth.

"Xanth?" Yuwen questioned, stepping passed the merchants and hopping the fence onto the dirt field. "What happened, are you alright?!" The guild leader rushed forward, sliding onto his knees and pushing out dirt as he came to a stop beside her.

Zhaoprazu smirked. "Makoko's? Hmm. Funny." The Salamander began to pace before Takai and Gonpo, Senshu eyeing him annoyedly. "Ten years ago I founded this circus, a place for beastmen and foreign humans to make a living and travel." Zhaprazu blinked at Takai. Most of my trope had... lost someone, something, to slavers. The circus offered us a way to stay together, travel across Yutan, find people- buy them back."

Zhaprazu sighed. "Makoko was a collector of exotic animals. He proposed we combine forces, incorporate beasts into the show, and he'd use his money to help find more of our loved ones- uplift them from servitude." Zhaprazu sighed. "But Yunish law is a maze. Since Makoko took over my circus owns more slaves than it has freed. We are supposed to be partners, but he treats me like a salamander. I am not a salamander, I am a SALAMAN."

Lao took a pause. His slimy hands had formed a fist at the thought of Makoko, though they released alongside a long exhale. He turned back toward Takai and Gonpo, once again composed. "What brings you two to Makoko's employment? Are you freemen?"

***

Yuwen grabbed the dog by the fur and began to shake the beast before pushing it off Xanth. "Wait, are you telling me..." Yuwen blinked from Xanth to the bear drawing and then to the tent looming on the horizon. "Mister Makoko has Kaor..."

Yuwen swallowed, turning to Suiken who approached on the horizon. "Suddenly it's not just Gonpo's bird we have to save," He sighed as the snow oni joined the two. "Makoko has slaves- Kaor among them, and I doubt he'd be willing to trade her for Lo-Muna like he did the bird..."

Xanth wrapped her arms around the dog and pulled him back to her, shocked by Yuwen's unnecessary cruelty. She shook her head vigorously at Suiken's suggestion and pointed to the sickly bruise on her side. Besides, even if any of the guild managed to overpower the nose lord, Kaor wouldn't even come... She needed to tell them. Xanth squinted as she scanned the area, lips twisted into a knot. Where was Ren. Where was her voice.

Instead of Ren she saw a villager dragging a cart of sticks. Her eyes glinted with rightful vengeance and she jabbed at the sticks, then the circus, and wiggled her fingers up like rising flames. Her fingers ran, before she swooped her hand from the sky and snatched the finger person up. Xanth settled back with crossed arms and a firm glare, her heated plan probably about to be disregarded. At least they now knew the lengths she'd go.

"What about all else in that tent?" Suiken shook his head, confirming Xanth's intuitions. "I understand how important she is to you, so all that means is that she's important to us too! We are the Great Guild, are we not?" He smiled. "So we will find a way to rescue your friend. But we should figure a way to do so without risking the lives of so many."

Suiken put a hand to his chin. "But a fire..." Suiken noted. "Perhaps the threat of it..."

Zhaoprazu blinked at the revelation, at these two miscreants known as Gonpo and Takai. "I know Kaor, she is a good woman. And Makoko did bring in a new capture early in the morning, some sort of bird creature, yes..." But then the salamander shook his head. "I applaud your heroics, but alas- your efforts are in vain," Zhaoprazu informed. "Makoko traps us all not by force, but my contract. He has our souls in ink and parchment."

"What are you thinking, you crusty old oni?" Yuwen asked, a smile growing on his face as he looked to Suiken...
