xxxx Adel is relatively slender, with her long hair messy and rarely brushed. She never wears any sort of makeup or anything similar and overall just never takes care of herself. Though some see this as annoying, it’s a simple side-effect of how she grew up--however, her natural beauty is, though marred by dirt, usually sufficient to get people to take notice of her. Adel’s eyes are narrow and her lips thin. Overall, she has the appearance of one who simply doesn’t care.

Image
Stubborn Dim Compassionate

xxxx Adel is, in a word, harsh. After experiences left her bitter and angry with the state of the world, Adel learned not to trust anyone and to keep herself looking tough and powerful to avoid getting wrapped up in anyone else’s problems. Still, she does care--as shown by her reaction to her brother’s murder and her oddly affectionate relationship with the spirits in her sword--and her compassion can be awakened with enough acts of kindness. She’s a troubled soul, but not cruel--stubborn, but not immovable. Though it takes patience, friends of Adel are happy to have her on their side.

"What was I s’posed ta do, huh?! What would ye’ve done?!"

Her sword ◌ Adel’s relationship with her sword is borderline affectionate--she’s hugely protective of it, sleeps with it next to her, and treats it as if it’s a human companion (perhaps because of the spirits inhabiting it). The spirits she can summon from her sword are cited as her only friends.
Her brother ◌ Adel adored her brother. It was Dreyfus who first taught Adel how to wield a sword in the first place and she yearned to be just like him growing up.
Kind people ◌ Earning Adel’s trust is really as simple as being kind. She’s grateful for the kindness of strangers and truly just wants to find someone who she feels she can rely on. Random acts of kindness are the quickest way to get her to warm up.
Grog ◌ Her brother often snuck her a drink at family gatherings. Adel learned to appreciate the taste and often enjoys getting a drink with friends (when she had friends, at least).
The dark ◌ It was a creature of darkness who gifted Adel her sword and creatures of darkness who helped her avenge her brother and then became her companions. Adel has learned to love the dark as a genuine friend.

The light ◌ Her village, made up entirely of light creatures, was the cause of Adel’s descent into fury and Adel has yet to have a run-in with a creature of the light she actually likes. She’s learned to be wary of them.
Summer ◌ After having been a farmer much of her life, Adel learned to hate the hot summer months and the humidity the season brought.
Annoying noises ◌ Adel is a fan of peace and quiet. Irritating sounds drive her up the wall faster than anything else.

◌ Adel speaks with an accent that’s hard to pin down. She attributes it to never really learning how to talk formally.
◌ Due to never having had a formal education, Adel often gets extremely confused by complicated plans or intellectual things.
◌ She’s always quick to start a fight, usually challenging people to sparring matches for no real reason.

◌ The dark. As much as Adel has learned to love it, she fears the rumors are true and one day her sword will rebel against her and kill her.
◌ The light. After wiping out her home town entirely, Adel is convinced the creatures of light are hunting her down to destroy her as she did her people.
◌ Drowning. Adel never learned how to swim and is now afraid of falling into water and drowning.

Adel wields a legendary sword from the realm of darkness. Trapped inside are four extremely powerful spirits of darkness, each one with a unique set of skills. Adel can call upon these spirits and have them act independently, use the sword normally, or, upon stabbing herself with the sword, call upon one spirit to grant its power directly to her.

The powers of each spirit are as follows:

Arachni--A witch with no limbs and eight strands of hair serving as her arms and legs. Arachni can control and manipulate fire, water, earth, air, light, and dark and move at high speeds. Her hair can regenerate when cut and serves as a bit of a shield.

Skell--A creature missing flesh with massive hands of bone. Skell’s hands are sharp enough to cut metal and strong enough to withstand the force of an explosion. She’s faster than Arachni, serving as the speedster and physical powerhouse.

Syna--A two-headed witch. Her heads, named “Good Syna” and “Evil Syna”, can both shoot fire from the mouth and create strong shields. “Good Syna” can add buffs or debuffs to allies or enemies, heal most wounds in under a minute, and teleport up to a mile in any direction. “Evil Syna” has a long tongue that can lash like a whip, hands that can slice through concrete, and teeth that can bite through metal.

Brittle--A shapeshifter capable of shifting form to other creatures of darkness, thus inheriting their abilities and specific strengths.

Versatility | Between her four spirits and her own skill with a sword, Adel is extremely versatile, often filling in gaps where others may struggle.
Swordsmanship | Even if her sword were to be somehow stopped from accessing the spirits within, Adel is comfortable enough with an ordinary sword to be able to do some serious damage.
Willing to listen | Once she trusts you enough, Adel is an excellent team player, willing to acknowledge her own shortcomings and work to accomplish a goal.

↘ W E A K N E S S E S ↙
Only one spirit at a time | Adel can only summon or embody one spirit at a time, meaning that one’s strengths leave her vulnerable to weaknesses another could potentially cover.
Corruption | Every use of the embodiment power the sword possesses risks corrupting Adel’s soul completely. Because of this, she very rarely uses this ability.
Only usable when the sword is in her hands | If Adel ever lost her sword, she could not remotely summon any of the spirits within. Additionally, the sword itself could be wielded by anyone else and is not particularly stuck to Adel in any way.
Unintelligent | Though adaptable, Adel isn’t particularly smart--left to herself, she often makes choices that are counterproductive or leave her wide open for an attack.

xxxxAdel once lived an ordinary life with her family in the human village of Sayvill. She lived with a farming family, though her brother Dreyfus was at risk of being enlisted into the army and thus practiced with a sword often. Adel begged him to train her, so the two spent much of their time not spent on the fields practicing swordplay together.

One day, Dreyfus was drafted and left on a campaign against the creatures of darkness. When he returned, he seemed vaguely different--Dreyfus explained to Adel that he’d had an encounter with a succubus and had been drawn into the actual realm of darkness, where he learned a lot of disturbing truths about the war. Before Adel could question him further on what he meant, the leader of the village barged into the home with some knights and began questioning Dreyfus and the rest of the family on what had transpired in the realm of darkness. Though Dreyfus swore he had no plans to betray the light and was firmly convinced he was on their side, the leader of the village had him executed anyways--and then, simply to ensure his ideas hadn’t “corrupted” the others, they slaughtered both of Adel’s parents as well. Barely managing to keep her wits, Adel grabbed Dreyfus’s sword and used it to fend off the knights enough to make her escape.

Fleeing into the forest, Adel wandered the woods for about a week before passing out from exhaustion, shock, dehydration, and hunger. She awoke in a closed-off glen near a river in the company of a strange horned man--though Adel’s immediate instinct was to draw her sword, her new companion quickly explained that he had rescued her and brought her to his safe haven to keep her safe from others. He also took the opportunity to explain that he was half-human and introduced himself as Leviathan.

Adel instantly broke down in tears. When she explained what had happened to Leviathan, Leviathan told her about the legend of the Nightmare Blade, a sword containing the sealed spirits of four incredibly powerful creatures of darkness. Since he too had grown to hate the light, he agreed to lead Adel to where the sword was said to lay. Together, the two set out, Leviathan’s psychic abilities aiding them in the long journey until they found where the sword sat. Driven by a desire for revenge and a deep fury, Adel drew the sword from the thicket it was trapped in and immediately felt a surge of the dark.

Enlisting Leviathan as a sparring partner, Adel worked to try and figure out the sword’s power and soon picked up on how to summon each spirit. Upon Leviathan’s urging, she began communicating with the spirits in the sword and formed a bond of sorts with them (although “Good Syna” was the only one who could speak a human tongue). Bidding her friend a fond farewell with hearty thanks for his help, Adel returned to her home village with a supply of food and water and, using the power of her sword and fueled by her fury, demolished the entire village, leaving not one survivor. This act not only earned her the title of the “Nightmare Tamer”, but also put her on the radar as a traitor to the light and an enemy to humanity. Adel returned to hiding in the woods.

Unable to relocate Leviathan and left alone as a result, Adel continues her wandering even now, keeping her eyes open for another case of injustice from the light.
