It was time once again, the annual meeting of the the hunters. From all around the world people came to become hunters, the greatest profession the world had ever known.

As everyone came to the gathering, a young looking woman not even in her 30's came to the front. This was Erika Ramos, the current head of command for the US branch of hunters. She had an air of authority in her expression, looking at all the hunters both green or otherwise. "I'll make this brief seeing as we have plenty of new faces here, you are here to become the hopes of humanity." She said to the crowd in front of her

Slipping among the gathered was a rather peculiar older woman, peculiar in her stride, her grin, her eyes, and her markings. Her clothes, equal parts dignified and provocative, may have once been a vintage Louisiana noble's blue dress, now tattered with parts of it torn out to fit its wearer. In her mind to allow her more freedom, particularly the legs, to others a shameless display befitting of a witch. This was Bellatroix, a rather contrary creature, who's past would seemingly contrast against the being who stood here today. She was a monster who could take the form of woman or terrible beast, and consumed the flesh of both, called over centuries a boogieman, a witch, a terrifying abomination, and yet...

"Bonjour, oh, oh, I beg my pardon, cher," she muttered, chuckling to herself as she bumbled into a few of the hunters on her way to her seat. As she seated herself, her chair groaned as the metal struggled against her weight, making a few seated beside her a little uncomfortable. Seeing their reactions she simply smiled, which may have made the matter worse in their minds. She then turned her attention to Erika and her speech.

As Erika began her speech, a new hunter was seated near Bellatroix herself. His name was Darren and he looked utterly terrified by the situation. He tried not to look at her and focused on Erika, trying to listen to the speech.

"You are among the hunters, the chosen people to help defend society from what they fear." She spoke in a precise tone, like she's done this before. "I know you are all either eager or terrified, but be assured you are helping in the best way possible." She spoke in that precise tone again, but it was more meant to be inspirational.

As usual, Everley was horrifically late. And not just, "oh, I had to do my makeup" late. She was "my small hoard of secret faeries got out and I couldn't build a faerie circle for all of them in time so there's a few in my purse right now." Her heart was pounding, and her palms were so sweaty that she feared the embarrassment of having to shake hands with anyone that evening. She was a hot mess, to say the least.

As she came to the doorway, Everley looked around in a panic. Curled hair lightly throwing about small flakes of what appeared to be hay, she looked presentable from afar but up close, it was apparent that she had an eventful evening thus far. Everley's parents were nowhere to be seen, and she thanked the gods for this. The last thing she needed was her doting mother finding something else to nitpick, or a silent disapproving glare from her step father.

Sauntering in as casually as possible, Everley tried to bring as little attention to herself as she could. A very serious and somber speech had already started, signifying even further that Everley was effortlessly late and irresponsible. Everley found her seat, and was pleased to find that the Bellatroix was at her table. She hoped that at some point in the evening she would find the gall to introduce herself, she had always likened herself to the powerful skinwalker, she thought they would perhaps bond on their.... alternative.... methods. Also seated at their table was a gentleman who appeared to be closer to her age, which meant he was likely someone who was also relatively new to the hunting world.

"'ullo..." Everley said softly, taking her seat as if she wasn't 20 minutes late to the event. As she settled in, she kept her bag held tightly on her lap, refusing to release a small few fae in a room full of hunters.

As Erika continued her speech, Bella had taken notice of those around her, particularly one trying his hardest not to make eye contact with her. He wasn't a very familiar face, implying that he's fresh to this and he reeked of fear. She had a good idea as to where this anxiety originated, and that amused her greatly. She placed both hand together on her lap and leaned over the young man.

"Ah, new blood I take it?" she asked softly, making her tone as pleasant as possible while smiling wide. "Don't worry, cher, this is mostly a formality, they won't just throw you to the lion's den," she continued, giggling a bit to herself as if she had remembered a joke. "And as for me? Well, no need to fear me, cher, I don't bite... much."

As she toyed with the greenhorn, another had come in, disheveled and nervous, and had a smell of fae about her. The skinwalker was simply giddy, and so few would understand why. Sitting back up straight, she tried to contain herself... but gave up early on the effort.

"Rather fashionably late than absent, dear," she whispered. "The gist of what you missed was an emphasis on the importance of this line of work," she continued, before grinning coyly. "By the way, impressed you can... simply hoard them all in your purse like that."

Everley was feigning interest in Erika's speech- she knew of her through her parents, something about being prestigious and worth every drop of the young girl's respect- when Bellatroix spoke up. Despite speaking softly, there was power and mystery in her voice; it sent delightful shivers down Everley's spine. She tilted her head slightly, listening to intently to every word spoken at their table. Despite keeping her eyes on Erika, Everley was far from paying attention to the speech. Bellatroix was, to put it simply, enchanting.

Bella made a comment about Everley's tardiness, to which she blushed profusely. Her sweaty palms were now salty pools, betraying her attempts at seeming relaxed. She wasn't so much nervous, as just genreally high strung and exhausted from corralling fae all evening. She sat up, adjusting her posture, eyes still glued onto Erika. And then, it was at this moment that Bellatroix mentioned the faeries.

Shit. Can.... can she smell them?! Oh gods, what have I gotten myself into.... She clutched tighter to her purse, but not so tight as to squish the poor little creatures inside. "Well...." Everley started, finally looking over at the impressively large woman. How do I explain to a witch that I stole this bag... from another witch. Do they practice special loyalties in that fashion? Shit, shit, shit. Everley smiled her best grin, the kind she would often use on her mother when explaining the appearance of a new puppy in their spotless home.

"It's no ordinary purse, to be fair. But these ones in particular I've had so long that I think they enjoy the idea of a night out on the town with their mummy!" She coughed out a laugh that was far too loud, stealing looks from other hunters at tables nearby. "I could show them to you later, if we find a moment alone. I'm sure they would behave especially nice for you, Miss Bellatroix."

Everley smiled, hoping it wasn't bizarre to Bella that the young girl was already familiar with her, but she assumed that she was used to being recognized. "I'm Everley, by the way. Everley Macrae. You might know my parents, but between us..." she leaned in, putting her elbows on the table to close their gap, "... they're terribly dull."

Everley turned her attention to the young man at their table, who looked absolutely mortified. Assuming he felt left out, she offered a cheeky grin his way, "What's your name, is it your first time here as well?"

"I welcome you all to the hunters, we are what makes the shadows afraid." From behind Erika a bunch of banners unfolded on the walls, showing the symbol of the hunters on them.

Darren was temporarily distracted by the centerpiece being unveiled in front of him, before looking back at the group talking to him. He was not one to blush but he quickly looked like he was trying to hide inside himself. "Darren.." He spoke in a clear British accent, adressing the woman holding the bag.

"That would be delightful," she said with a grin. "And don't worry, I'm not the type to blow the whistle simply over one's relatively harmless fancies. I have a fair bit of my own, after all."

Bella found herself in the peculiar situation of being seated between two amusingly different rookies. On one hand, a timid young Englishman, looking as if he was on the verge of a panic attack, and on the other a more forward and giddy young woman with a seeming passion for the supernatural. Two opposite forces, she surmised, were what brought these two here, for the young man, likely pressured into it, based on his panicked, possibly agoraphobic demeanor, and for the young woman, a certain blissful glee for it, near obsessive, perhaps. Oh dear, I'm analyzing everyone again, she thought, as the banners unfolded.

What's more in this situation, and some sad consequence of having a reputation, as well as an unabashedly honest presence, it robbed her of her own introduction. "Ah, I see my reputation precedes me," she says with an unbroken grin. She then tilted her head over in Darren's direction. "I assure you, though, the last human was around the 1300s, where a combination of a growing awareness in my abhorrent behavior, and a lonely void that it generated gave me incentive to reinvent myself. My more predatory energies in large part have been rerouted to more creative, nurturing, and admittedly, even playful," she said with a slight giggle, an effort to try to offer a bit of comfort. She straightened herself back up "As for my... art, well, I am always open to requests. Oh! And simply Bella will suffice, and nicknames are certainly not off limits. Too many formalities can make things rather dull, wouldn't you agree?" she continued, trying to keep her voice low so not to interrupt Erika. As soon as the speech is over, she may have to excuse the poor boy to go out and get fresh air, if he won't excuse himself.

At this point, Everley had completely given up at feigning interest in the speech, Bellatroix and the bashful Darren were significantly more interesting. With a sigh of relief, Everley nodded, thankful that Bella had no intention to out her for bringing her miniature monsters to the monster hunter's meeting. At this point, the young woman felt entirely relaxed. What a night, thank the gods I'm not sitting with someone boring. This is a blast! She smiled to herself, imagining how unbelievably bored she would have been had she been forced to sit with other hunters. This was like the first day of school, discovering your assigned seating puts you with the coolest kids in class.

It was at this point that Everley looked up, and spotted her parents across the way, diligently watching Erika. Her step father looked cool, calm, collected. The usual. Boring and proper. Her mother, on the other hand, looked beautiful that night, the perfect vision. Her mother seemed to startle, and looked around, as if she felt her own daughter looking at her. Suddenly, with a soft swoosh, the flags behind Erika unrolled, revealing the hunter symbols. A sense of pride, and shame, surged through the girl. She understood the importance of her job, and what it meant to be a hunter. Sometimes it was easy to forget, when she spent her days playing with fae and chasing benevolent monsters, that her job meant saving the lives of humans.

Everley's attention was brought back to Bella, who had started explaining her own story to the rather frightened Darren. She wasn't sure if he needed a cigarette or to throw up, but Everley felt for the boy.

"If we are using nicknames, you both can call me Ev!" She grinned again, seemingly full of smiles for the night.

"Any new recruits should visit the contract desk to apply." A voice rung out from a speaker, it was an older sounding man. Darren took this opportunity to leave for it as soon as possible, hoping to get away from the large crowd.

Erika had stepped down from the podium she delivered her speech from and approached a group of nearby recruits, speaking to them though without her microphone it would be hard to discern her from the crowd which was excitedly talking amongst themselves.

Bella held her cheek as the announcement rang out over the speaker. "Oh well, sounds like that means you two, Ev, Darr-" Bella began, but noticed he was already headed off. She sighed, letting out a short laugh. "Well, then," she muttered, shifting her eyes back to Everley. "Best get to it. As for me, well," she began, standing up from her seat, the chair squeaking as it was released from her weight, like a metallic sigh of relief. She waved back to Everley. "I'll be around."

She walked over to the crowds around Erika, and found herself unable to get any closer, at least, not without being rude. Bella had found that most humans tend to become agitated or sheepish when their personal space is invaded, more-so when multiple breach it, so it was impressive to her that Erika hadn't become suffocated by all of it. Bella, on the other hand, had a reputation that tends to put people on edge.

"Inspirational as always, dear," she said as she placed her hands on her cheeks. "I'd love to deliver my own sometime, but I have my doubts a speech from me would be near as effective."

Everley took the announcement as a sign to finally go and see her parents- they were likely to cause a fuss if she didn't see them at least once that evening, and her mother was highly excited to see her off to the new recruit desk. It had been her mother, Haeden's, dream since she gave birth to have a daughter to hunt with; and seeing it finally come to fruition absolutely thrilled the woman.

Everley weaved through the crowed, eyes glued to her mother, when she noticed her step-father begin to glare at her in her peripherals. My gods, could he be any more obnoxious?! Keeping her smile, she continued over, ignoring the negative energy seeping out from her mother's awful husband. Everley anxiously patted at the clasp on her bag, making sure it was secure and her energy was positive. The last thing she needed was to have her pesky little friends escape during the most important part of the night.

"Mother!" She called out, arms open for an embrace. Haeden looked up at her daughter in surprise, as if she hadn't demanded her daughter attend that evening. As if they hadn't argued for months about whether or not the young girl should attend.

"My sweet child, you look lovely," Kind but tired green eyes looked her over, stopping at her hair to investigate the hay protruding out from her strawberry curls. "...What in the world have you been up to tonight?" She asked, disappointment dipping from her mouth.

This further caught her step-father's attention, which was the last thing Everley needed, or wanted. Colin came in close, blocking out any potential onlookers. "Must you always be such a mess, Everley? Why must you do this to your poor mother..." He growled, glaring with intent to kill. He was always the first to attack- this was probably why he was such an excellent hunter with an abnormally high kill rate.

Everley visibly shrank, as if she intended to disappear entirely. "I- I'm sorry." She stammered, gaze dropping to her feet.

"And that atrocious bag. I thought your mother bought you something more appropriate for this evening!" He hissed, putting his arm out as if he intended to take it. "Let's check your awful things and hope that nobody has seen the mess that you are. The Macrae name shall not be tarnished!" Everley's eyes widened, and she shook her head violently. "And then, your mother will take you to the bathroom, and you will make yourself look a bit more... presentable!"

Everley started to shake. Only she knew that the second the bag left her sight, the locking mechanism would fail. She couldn't, wouldn't, let this happen. She looked desperately at her mother, who seemed to also cower in fear, but Everley knew the woman would say nothing. She never stood up to her husband. I'm the only one who will stand up for myself... She remembered the wise words of a witch she once met in passing, and this filled her with courage.

"No. I like the way I look tonight. We are hunters, this isn't a debutante ball." She stuttered a bit, but gained confidence as she continued. "I will not go to the bathroom to be freshened up like some toddler, and I will not check by bag!" Had she the gall, she would have stomped to punctuate the last sentence.

Alas, this did not work, and Colin immediately grabbed her bad. The second he touched it, his negative energy seeped into the lock, dismantling the mechanism and riling up the faeries. Immediately, four faeries, all about the length of a pencil and an inch thick, sprung out, soaring high above their heads.

Their presence immediately caught the attention of every hunter nearby, and Everley felt her eyes begin to well up with tears.

"Please... don't kill them..." She cried out, as the faeries began to wreck as much havoc as their small bodies could possibly allow.

The reaction to the Faeries in the room was immediate, numerous hunters drew their guns and took aim. Before any of them could take a shot, strange runic symbols began forming and caging in the fae in a sort of red energy. The source of this was Erika herself, showcasing her veteran hunter skills.

She had caused this to happen with an amulet she held into the air, a glowing symbol of the hunter present on it. She lowered it closer to the ground before all of the captured fae were clustered into one and then were immediately launched from the room out the door. The magical shield that contained them dissipated after a moment, allowing them to flee for their lives.

Darren had watched the entire thing, the whole event putting him on edge but at the same time, left him in awe at the swiftness and prowess of what a hunter can do. He disappeared into the crowd once things began settling down, trying his damndest to reach the application desk.

Bearing witness to the ensuing chaos, the shapeshifting witch bore witness behind the awe-struck crowd and watched as battle-ready hunters took aim at the mischievous little fae that hat once occupied the girl's handbag. This was a ticking time bomb ready to go off, until they were rather effortlessly, and spectacularly, expelled using a kind of magical containment. Not a person was harmed, nor was a single fae.

There was a short silence all around to be sure following such a spectacle, that was, until an outburst of laughter broke out, originating from none other than Bellatroix herself. She ended her laughter with a snort, and, in stride made her way to the source of the outbreak, wiping her eyes.

"Oh! Colin Macrae! Bonjour! Oh my, why... I'm surprised, really, to find you at the center of such an egregious display," she said coyly, hands on each of her cheeks and swaying playfully. "I'd have thought you'd have read the situation more carefully than this, the patterns on the bag indicative of a holding vessel," she said, letting out a cute little sigh. "But... I digress, your daughter may not have followed proper containment procedure, but isn't this part of why she's here to begin with? And she was capable of securing them to begin with... as you know, they are notoriously quite a handful, and we're lucky they were only low-level fae, soooo... how about we let this slide, let her sign up, and from there, allow her to be trained proper?" she said, shifting to the side, grinning and closing her eyes. "I mean, best to just let the scene pass with a warning and get on with the day... best to let this little incident die in quiet dignity and grace, rrrright?"

Everley was immensely relieved to see that her small friends had escaped unharmed, and was only mildly saddened to see them go free out the door. Well, there goes all my work, damn. Just as the shock of the moment set in, Everley shot a quick glance at her step-father, who looked like he was seconds from having a heart attack. Had they not been surrounded by people, she was sure he would have hit both her and her mother - for good measure, of course- for embarrassing him in such a fashion.

Suddenly, the sound of laughter ricochet throughout the room, causing Everley to glow a bright red. The girl looked around frantically, fearing that the whole room was laughing at her. She was relieved to find that it was Bellatroix, whose laughter and smile was intoxicating. Even if she was laughing at Everley, Bellatroix' sense of humor was contagious. Everley couldn't help but let out a few giggles as the witch made her way over.

She listened to the smooth words pouring out of Bella's mouth, and nodded eagerly.

"Yes! This is a great example of how much potential I could have, with the right training!" She embellished her response quite a bit, but was desperate to at least re-earn her mother's approval. She was beyond grateful that Bella had spoken up against Colin, and she gave the wise woman a look that she hoped showed her gratitude.

"I'm sorry." She aimed the apology towards her mother, but said it loudly enough for everyone in the room to hear. She looked around desperately. "I truly, truly am."

To dispel the tension the loudspeaker from before began another announcement. "Newcomer hunters should apply to the contract desk, supplies will be taken from your contract rewards should you ask for any." It was a different voice this time, Erika had taken the microphone once again in hopes to calm the twitchy crowd.

Darren of course had already made his way to the desk, talking to the man attending it.

Part of her had hoped that Colin would snap at her, try to talk her down, make a scene and focus all his frustration on her until he was blue in the face. She knew it, being the purist that he was, that he hated that a creature like her had come to be recognized as a hunter. She couldn't respect a man like him, not as a hunter and certainly not as a husband and father. In a past life, he'd be marked as prey.

"Now... with that out of the way," Bella said, ignoring the likely discontent glares of Colin. She motioned to the desk. "Best not to let these matters hinder you, dear. Haeden, Colin, I bid you two well," she finished, giving them a curtsy then proceeded to the contract desk.

As Darren had approached the contract desk, he had the fortune (or perhaps misfortune) to run into Bella again. He tried not to look at her but he simply could not ignore her since she was right next to him. The person behind the desk began speaking to both of them and handing them both badges displaying their current ranks. Since they were both completely new they were assigned as D rank.

The man behind the desk then explained that if they could complete a contract above their rank they could rise to it. Darren had nodded to the man and unconsciously smiled at Bella, speeding off to a nearby contract wall to look for any available hunts.

Bella politely thanked the man and follows after Darren in a relaxed stride, on to the contract board. As she stood there for a moment, giving a look over the board. The opportunities for D rank weren't exactly entertaining, at least for a creature of her age, and it wouldn't be that entertaining to do something by her lonesome. She cracked a toothy grin as she shifted a glance over at Darren.

"So," she uttered softly as she slipped over behind the board. An upsetting muffled series of sounds could be heard, wet snaps and crunches, before something began slithering up the board from the back, a black and white tail becomes exposed from around the edge, wagging quickly, whipping the air loudly. From the other edge a clawed hand grips the edge of the board as a creature's head peers out, with a toothy maw and white face. "Just a thought, cher, but, considering you're new, and this only being my first officially sanctioned hunt, I was thinking," she continued, as she worked her way to the top of the board and laid over it with her head resting flat. The form she had taken, was some strange blend of a ferret or genet with the slink body of a snake and enlarged considerably, and given more pronounced fingered claws and predatory features. Hunters and greenhorns unfamiliar with the witch's mischief would become either shocked or put on edge.

"Perhaps," she uttered quietly, putting the finger of one of her claws under her chin as if to think, before laying over and dangling herself upside down over the board. "Well, according to procedure, one can rank up more quickly by taking on a higher rank, but the catch is that it requires at least one partner... for safety reasons, of course. Darren, I'll be honest, I don't tend to care much for ranks, glory, money, or any of that, being what I am," she continued, before clasping her claws together, and looked straight at Darren, still hanging upside down. "But... maybe you do, and I offer to you my assistance."

Darrens attention was drawn from the board toward Bella herself, her inhuman shape and movement not helping his unease around her. She however had drawn good points about how he needed to rise in the ranks, he did want to please his parents after all. "What would you suggest we do?" he said in a slightly more confident tone than before. His answer however came to him in a way neither of them would likely expect.

Right in front of them, an urgent looking C rank contract was smack in the middle of the board. It described how a lycanthrope has been spotted killing a farmers cattle. The location was described as further south from where they were and the instruction explained that it is a kill contract, capturing permitted only if it were to be killed later.

"Ah!" Bella exclaimed as she hung further over the board exposing more of her rangy form, and with outstetched arms circled them around the contract in an upside-down heart shape. "Now... there's a concept! Danger, but pretty well documented, so preparation is straight forward enough. Mmm," she said, as she curved her body up so she twisted upright, squinting her eyes. "Pretty lucky for us, right, cher?"

With a creaking sound, the witch's morphed body lost grip of the board, and with her serpentine body unfurling, she plummeted onto the ground below, face first with a small comical yelp. Her body fell in a way that it coiled around her, like a snake, until the entirety of her was rolled up before Darren. After an awkward moment of silence she popped back up from the pile, giggling, wearing the lower portion of own body around her neck like a mink boa. With her claws, she took each corner of her mouth and stretched it into a smile. "And I'm not human, so chances are if it attacks, I could get bitten instead and be fine... probably!" she said with a slight chuckle. She then slouched over and propped her head on both of her claws, then reached out with of them for a handshake.

"What do you say, partner?"

Though he wouldn't say it, Darren was deeply unsettled by Bellas movements. She had made good points though on her abilities complimenting his. When she had fell onto the ground he jumped backwards quite a distance, dropping from his person a rather large looking book reaching at least 600 pages in size. The book was a bestiary created by hunters from around the world documenting various monsters and cryptids alike. He quickly picked up the book and stashed it away again before seeing her holding out her clawed hand outstretched to him.

He at first was naturally afraid of what she might do to him before realizing she was offering him a handshake, a partnership. He was reluctant but he felt he had little choice in the matter so he placed his hand into hers, his looking tiny in comparison. "Partners." He spoke in a meek tone.

She clasped her long fingers around his hand but applied little pressure, giving instead a gentle shake and leaned win with a grin. "Now that didn't hurt, did it, cher?" she said with a humored tone, before releasing his hand and drawing back, placing her fingertips together and laying her chin between giving a playful look of innocence. The whole situation was absurd, and she was unashamedly eating it up. "Right then! Suppose we apply, prepare, and move out," she said, before stretching and glancing around at onlookers. "And I suppose I should return to a more palatable form," she continued, with a sigh.

When no one is looking, she thought as her body twitched slightly.

Everley kept her head down and her eyes low as she made her way over to the contract desk, and was relieved to see the line wasn't terribly long. She felt the red slowly fade from her face, and found that not many were speaking about the incident that had just occurred.

God, could you have been any more of a knob she thought to herself. Had she the time and space, she would have kicked herself. At least Bella was there... Everley found herself wondering what she would have done had Bellatroix not stepped in to diffuse her step-father's wrath. Would she have survived the night? OR would she have been forced to flee in terror? The line grew shorter, causing excitement to grow within the young hunter. She was next up, and all the drama from before seemed to fade away in Everley's memory.

"Next." A young man called out, beckoning her forward. She stumbled up, tripping on what appeared to be nothing. Her hands grew sweaty once again, and she anxiously wiped them across her dress. She smiled meekly, and he did not return the pleasantries.

"Hiyyah. Everley Macrae, reporting for, erm, duty." She joked lightly, but the young man seemed uninterested in sharing a laugh with her.

"Rank D. Check the board for similar rankings. We recommend only going for what you're capable of, despite any interests to jump ranks." He looked her over with disapproval- clearly he had not missed what had happened earlier. She blushed, and her eyes dropped low once again. Her ego had taken one too many hits for one night.

"Right! Thanks...." She signed off all her paperwork, and made her way to the board. Everley was more than pleased to see Bella and Darren there, discussing a possible hunt. She heard them say lycan, and she knew she wanted to jump into the group... if only they had the heart to take on someone as messy as she was. They were already shaking hands, and she feared she was too late to join them. Unfortunately for Everley, she did not catch that it was a kill contract.

"Need a third? I've got some spare chew toys that I know lycanthropes tend to adore..." She smiled shyly, feeling like the new kid on the first day of school. "I understand if not, I just don't know many hunters here and most of these contracts require teams... the more the merrier, right?" She looked back and forth between the two eagerly, expecting the worst.

Darren was actually relieved to see Everley again, his unease over Bella going away. They were both rookies with no hunting experience, he could have some common ground with her. "We should visit the armor, we need weapons for the hunt." He spoke with a somewhat newfound confidence, gesturing with his eyes to a nearby stand where a group of other hunters were gathered, lined with weapons of varying kinds along with ammo both standard and specialized.
