The Journey: The Tales of Four

0 INK

Once every four years, a small group of children from the village known as Bregar are sent out into the Wild. Whether or not they will survive, that's up to you. ONE SPOT OPEN

2,150 readers have visited The Journey: The Tales of Four since ISpeakTheTruth created it.

Introduction

Image
The Journey. . . something all young people in Bregar wish to experience. It's supposed to be an honor, a reputation. If you survive it, your family is treated with great wealth in the village. However, some people view it as a cruel tradition.

Obviously, the Journey is different for everyone. Sometimes the Chosen come back as great heroes, while more often than not they don't return at all. Whatever their fate, the Chosen are not allowed to speak of their adventures once they walk back through the Gates.
Perhaps the reason for this is to keep the Unknown remaining the Unknown, or perhaps it's to lessen the shame of revealing that even though they survived and made it back, they returned empty handed with no real news of the outside word.

The Fiddleson Sisters are said to be as old as Bregar itself. They are the ones that choose who go on the Journey's, and as some Bregarians suspect, are the forces of Life and Death themselves.
Often it is a group of five who are selected every year. No more, sometimes less, but never is it just one person alone.
Whoever they may be, the Chosen always share something that will either lead to their greatest success, or to the failure that cost them their lives. Be it jealousy, ambition, determination, or anything else that has the power to control them, it is no coincidence that the group either bonds together or fights until they fall apart.

It is the Time of Choosing again, just as it is every fourth year, and the Fiddleson Sisters are about to reveal who's next for The Journey.

You have never left your home, not once. You and many others have yet to be granted that once in a lifetime privilege.
While some of you may have snuck a glance or two of what's behind the large walls surrounding the village, most of you have no idea that there is a forest just minutes away. For all you know, what lies behind the barrier that keeps you safe is just an empty wasteland where the monsters hide. You are oblivious to the world that is literally just within your reach, and you have lived in fear of anything different than what you know.

Now you have been chosen to spend six months in the place that you've only heard whispers about.

After however many years you have lived, after all those times you have seen friends and family wave their goodbyes, after those few happy reunions and many sad memorials, you have been chosen by the Fiddleson Sisters to begin your Journey. It is an amazing honor, most people say, to be called out by the two wisest elders and sent to find your purpose. It is what most young people look forward to, and what most adults wish they had been given the chance for.
Some minds think different of the occasion, though.
Is it really worth it? So many lives have been lost in their search for something the Council won't let them know of, what is even the point?

You, young one, are one of the four Chosen who will either survive, or fail. Who will you be leaving behind? Who will you be hoping to see again? Will you even be remembered if you don't make it back? The answer is one you must figure out for yourself, as no one but you controls the thoughts that you think.
The only thing for sure is that once the sun goes down, you and three others will be on your way into the Wild. There is no telling of what exactly will happen, but the best advice is to try not to get killed.

Image

Image
Bregar is your home. It is where you were born, where you were raised, where your family and friends all live. Maybe it is even the place where you will be married and have your family.
Bregar is all that you know, all that you have seen, all that you can think of when there's a mention of 'home'. In your mind, it is paradise, but through your eyes, you are painfully blind.
The rules are strict and the punishments are harsh, the Leaders of the Council claim it is all for your protection. Is that true? Curfew's, restrictions, scoldings for putting one foot out of line. . . all for pure safety? Maybe it's true, maybe the Leaders have best interest at heart, but the high walls are a cage to the few that have opened their eyes just a little bit wider, and the Gates are a lock that doesn't have a key.
Still, it is home. When the beasts from the Wild attack, it is the Village Warriors who have protected you. When the Rangers invade, it is the Leaders who sends them away. When you have gotten sick, it is the Healers who have cured you. Bregar has everything you need, there is no reason anymore to travel beyond the Walls in search for something better. . . right?
Maybe there's a different reason other than insuring safety, why the Leaders are so intent on not letting anyone leave except during the Time of Choosing. Could it be fear? Could it be control? You may have been a rebellious spirit, but even you have never challenged the ways of Bregar.
Speaking against the ways have always resulted in punishment, and you certainly are not dumb enough to slip up so easily.
The Fiddleson Sisters see that, too.
They speak with the Leaders often, casting glances at the potential in the youth of your village. You may have been curious and listened in on their conversations at one point, but their words are always hushed when you pass by.

Image

Image
Forget about the Walls that have guarded you and the place it surrounds, but hold the ones that have cared for and have loved you close to your heart, and keep your senses alert if you wish to live. Unfortunately, that is the best advice one can give. On the better side, it is mostly what is needed to know.
For a better explanation, the rules that Bregarians are used to mean absolutely nothing in the Wild. The creatures are fierce, the earth seems to drag you down to your grave, and despite the knowledge that the sun should be shining, barely any light can be found through the crowd of leaves that sway above you without the aid of the wind.
It is different here, and it is not pleasant.
If the Teneb attacks, the Dok sightings, or the distant shrieks and songs of the Odi's do not bother you quickly, then the other lovely aspects of the Wild will drive you to the edge instead.

THIS WILL BE COMPLETED SOON.
I APOLOGIZE.

Information Regarding The Characters
-You may have only two characters if you don't want to play as just one. No more than two, though.
-This will be discussed more, but I'm planning for some of the characters to be killed off. If the one you want to play as has a sad future of getting him/herself killed, you might want to double up.
-I made the "roles" for the characters for a reason, please try to tie it in with who your character is. (ex: The Leader, obviously going to be the leader of the group, and The Liar is obviously going to be hiding something. Get it?)
If you have any questions/need help finding pictures/gifs, please feel free to PM me and I'll do my best.

Image
1) Just like with any other roleplay, please follow the site rules.

2) Be kind to your fellow roleplayers. We're all friends here! ^^ I don't want to have to warn you guys about not behaving properly.

3) The minimum words per post is 300, but a little bit above would be appreciated. I know that not everyone can always have that many, and I know that writers block gets at all of us, but I want to see that you're at least trying.

4) Grammar and spelling are important! Misspells aren't uncommon, and I myself am not overly good at grammar, but once again I want to see that you're trying to make your post look wonderful and fantastic and not like it was written by a three year old.

5) For the first part of the password, along with your reservation in the OOC add your favorite dancing gif. Thank-you.

6)At the least, post once a week. Life gets in the way, I know, but if you don't give a warning or a heads up after some time, you will probably be kicked out.

7) Reservations last three days. Unless you give me a reason for why you can't have even a WIP sent in by then, the spot will be open for someone else to take.

8) This isn't really a rule, but the faceclaims for the characters can be changed. I put them there because with anime, people tend to use characters that in my opinion, aren't very good for roleplays. If you want to change a faceclaim, PM me who you would like to use instead and I can either reject or approve it.

9) Second part of the password is your favourite colour.

10) Have fun!

Ettana "Etta" Ravich
Location: The village of Bregar

The sound of her mother dragging the pots and pans out from the cupboards woke her up, but it was her brothers who decided to play 'monster attack' that caused her to drag herself out of bed.
"Will someone please get them to stop it?"
The girl complained, swinging open her bedroom door and putting on her best scowl to present to her family. Though her face itself looked rather nice, her usual expressions tended to make her appear... unfriendly. The forming frown lines and cold eyes tended to warn people off.
From the kitchen, which was really only a few feet away, her mother Diane smiled, "Good morning to you too, Etta." she said, "Did you have a good sleep?"
Etta let out a yawn and made her way over to her mother, "Yes, it was fine." was her reply.
The mother frowned at her daughter, but did nothing other than announce that she was getting breakfast prepared and that it would be ready soon.

When the food was on the plates and the family of six was settled down around the table, Etta's father, Max, was the first to start a conversation. "So, it's a big day today, huh?" The man said, looking up from the cooked ham and corn.
"I hope I'm chosen this year." One of the brothers said, his brown eyes shining with excitement, "I'd be the first one ever to kill one of the monsters and bring it back to Bregar!"
Etta rolled her eyes, "You seriously don't think that would actually happen, do you Adam?" She asked in a mocking tone, "Like the Fiddleson sisters would ever chose you."
Adam sneered at her, "Who's the one who wants to be a Protector, but can't get accepted into training?"
"Shut up!"
"What? Are you mad?" Adam laughed, "Johnson says you'll probably never make it through, you know."
Their mother narrowed her eyes, "Stop it, both of you." She snapped in a harsh tone, "Ettana, you do not say such things to your brother. Adam, apologize immediately."
The two other brothers did their best to hide the smirks on their faces while the third spat out an apology. Their father nodded and put back on the smile that had momentarily left his face when the two children had been arguing, "Good. Once we've finished our meal, I want all of you to wash your faces and dress nicely. None of you may be picked today, but it has never done harm to look your best."

Above the family, the lights dimmed and went out completely after a few seconds. When they flickered back to life, Etta lowered an eyebrow, "When is the power going to be fixed? It's been acting like this for months." she said, picking at the cooked ham with her fork.
Her father wiped his hands on a napkin and shrugged, "I'm not informed with the Council's activities, Etta, but I'm sure they'll fix it soon."
"Mr. Araya could fix it, if they'd let him."
"He doesn't do that kind of work anymore, idiot." Adam pointed out, "Not after what happened to his son."
The story was, the Council claimed, was that Ak Araya's son had been killed during work one day. The boy and been electrocuted and fried due to clumsy use of equipment was their story, yet a body had never been shown during the funeral. The Araya's had been the machinery people of Bregar, and when Ak and Nisa's son died they stopped their business and never reopened. And now, years later, they pretended that Nolan had never existed.
The story wasn't even supposed to be mentioned.
"Hush, Adam. No one asked for your opinion." Diana said, shooting a cold glare at her son, "The Council will make arrangements for repairs when they have the time. They are very busy people, you know."
Adam scowled, "Of course I know! Everyone only says it about a-"
"Alright!" Max said suddenly, shooting up from his chair and cutting his son's sentence short, "Children, go clean up. We're expected to be outside in half an hour."

Wynston "Winnie" Bains
Location: Breakfast table in Bregar

Image
"Wynston?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you think our trees are small on purpose?"
"Yes. it's so we can't see beyond the gate."
Wynston's friend paused for a moment. "...Good point. What do you think it's like out there?" "I think it's fun out there. Everyone wants to leave sometimes, so it must be." Wynston reasoned with the logic his mind allowed him to remember. "Do you want to leave?" His friend finally asked. "... Maybe." Wynston swung his feet around and readjusted his balance. His friend remained silent for a while, almost as if he had left. "Hey. Are you still there?" Wynston asked, looking around the branch for any trace of him. But Wynston soon realized he was all alone up at the top branch. He's always been.

"Wynston, who were you talking to?"
His mother asked, scraping some eggs off of the pan onto Wynston's plate. "No one. I was thinking aloud." He replied with a mouth stuffed with pancakes. (His mother hardly understood a word he said, but nodded in agreement. ) Wynston licked a few drops of syrup off of his lips and gave a satisfied sigh. "Mum, this is really good. I don't remember you making such a large breakfast before! Is it my birthday or something?" He questioned, childishly placing his spoon in his orange juice and sipping it out. "Oh good heavens no, your birthday was months ago! Today's the day young adults like you will be picked to go on an adventure. So when The Fiddleson Sisters see you lined up with that full tummy, I want them to think 'My, that's a nice looking boy right there! So strong and healthy. Let's pick him to go on the Journey." Ms Bains explained with a cheerful look, reaching across the table to place her hand under her son's chin, pretending to inspect him. "Oh." Wynston responded, not sure what to think about that. His mother continued on about how she would have liked to go on the adventure, and how she would have came back a strong woman. But before she got into details, she caught a glimpse at the stove clock and realized it was time to get ready. (They had 25 minutes left before it was time to leave. )

Wynston closed the house door behind him and locked it with his mother's key, then quickly followed behind his mother respectively. "Good. we're not late." His mother spoke, watching other people leave their homes just around the same time they were. That let a little stress off of his mother's shoulder's, at least. but just as she said that, Wynston spotted a girl from his school. he perked up and immediately started running towards her. "Be right back!" He yelled back to his mom, who didn't seem to mind.

"Hi! Remember me from school? I'm Wynston! You're uh.. You're Lyrael, right? Well I'm Wynston!" he spoke hurriedly, hardly giving eye contact at all. "Today's the day people are gonna be picked to go on an adventure. Did you know that?"

Thomas Arclight
Location: Somewhere in the Wild, on a mountain

"Ugh.... What happened?"
Thomas looked around, as he was lying on the ground near his cabin. All he felt was a sharp pain near his temples, and his vision was quite blurry. Something he could see, however, was obscuring his view. It seemed to be a Vinat, and it was crawling on his face. Thomas quickly stood up, started hitting his face, and yelling."AAH! Get off me, you stupid-" When he managed to pull it off, he saw Bregar from a totally different view. Even though the cabin wasn't in the forest, the spectacular view from the mountain nearby was amazing. When he looked around, he saw the puny water pickup connected to Gabe's house. Smiling, he treaded town the mountain's path. It was really steep. He managed to lose his grip on the rocks, and Thomas was sent flying down. "AAH!" Grabbing onto a rock, he was able to stabilize his grip climbing down. "C-crap.. If only Nolan and the others were here.. This wouldn't be a problem!"Heaving himself up, he slowly descended off the foot of the mountain. When he reached the breakfast area, all that he saw a bunch of food lying in baskets. No one was there at the moment, as Thomas could tell. Grabbing a loaf of bread and cream, he sat down and ate till he was content. "Mmm, this is good! Whoever got this must've worked hard or bought this for a bunch..." He felt kinda weird though; He was eating stuff without the others knowing! And he also felt he was being watched for some reason...Could someone have set up a trap?!

Location: Village of Bregar | On the outside wall

Kara Nash, the brave and daring girl of the whole village, sat on the wall that separated her from the outside world she so badly wanted to pass through. The outside world was the goal of her lifetime and she wanted to start accomplishing it as soon as possible. The only problem was that people, like her parents, didn't want her to leave.

Outside was dangerous, full of traps, mysteries, and lies, but to Kara, it was going to be a place of adventure, uniqueness, and wonder. She wanted to see all that she could as soon as possible.

The purple haired girl reached her hand out where it went over the invisible barrier between Bregar and the outside world, "So close..." She murmured to herself, lowering her hand slowly, "Yet so far away..." Kara sighed and only continued to look at the dark forest that was waiting for her.

"Kara, get down from the wall!" One of the younger children called out. He was short, tiny, and hardly older than 10, but had the personality of a bull, "I'm going to go tell your parents and you're going to get into a lot of trouble! You know we're not allowed to look over the walls!" He shouted up to her.

Kara looked down at him and ran her fair hand through her silky hair and responded maturely, "Feel free to." She smiled, though she seemed to have been mocking the child she knew to tattle on her, "It won't matter much. Today is the day when a certain few people will get to travel outside these walls..." She looked outside, a twinkle of excitement in her eyes, "I'm certain I'll be one of them." She said confidentially.

"Whatever, crazy old lady!" The child yelled to her, sticking his tongue out and running away, laughing. Kara rolled her eyes as he stomped away, but with a hint of a genuine smile on her face.

In the end, just as the child had told her, Kara leapt down from the wall, quickly, yet gracefully, almost reflecting her own personality as she did so. When she reached the ground with a perfect landing, she stretched her arms and looked up at the sky to see a flock of birds pass over the wall, "I'll be out there soon." She told herself again, "Hopefully..."

Kara couldn't tell the future, but she had a feeling she'd be one of the chosen ones to go outside the wall. She wanted to go. She wanted to leave her home to go adventure. If she wasn't picked, what would happen? She'd live a boring and dull life within the walls of Bregar? If she wasn't picked, she'd make sure she'd escape to the forest the night of, but all Kara could hope for was her name being called when the time would come for selection, "I need to find that certain place anyways." She said and began to casually stroll through her home village, also hoping that no one had seen her take a peek over the walls. Though, even if anyone did, it wouldn't be a surprise. Nearly everyone knew how much she, especially, wanted to leave the place.

Ettana "Etta" Ravich
(Part One)

Location: The village of Bregar

It was quiet in the small village, as usual, but that wasn't what was bothering Ettana as she and her brothers were rushed outside by their parents. No, it wasn't just 'quiet' in Bregar, it was silent. Aside from the distant sounds of the few children who weren't being supervised, not a soul in the village was daring to speak.
The bell had rung five minutes ago, giving the families just enough time to finish their morning routines before the second bell rung, and by then the people were expected to already be in the village square ready to listen.
The Ravich family, just like every Choosing, was one of the last few to arrive.
"Ettana, stand beside Simon." Etta's mother said quietly, pushing the girl to where she was supposed to go. "Don't make that face, Adam, and Bradly, why didn't you change your shirt?"
"No one is going to care." Etta sighed, folding her arms over her chest, "Hardly anyone from our family ever gets picked, anyway."

"Be quiet, Ettana." Her father hushed.
Etta scowled, but didn't say another word.

In the middle of the square, two elderly woman stood side-by-side. Their hair was a grey/white colour and pulled back tightly into buns, their skin drooped from their bodies, and on their faces was what appeared to be an everlasting frown. Despite their strict hair, hanging skin, and the disapproving glances they casted, it was their eyes that was the most unwelcoming thing about them. They were light, like the clouds, but one look was a sharp was a sword.
"Welcome!" The first woman called out, though she barely had to raise her voice in order to be heard, "Four years have passed since our last great event, and in that time we have unfortunately lost three of four valuable lives of the people who were sent out on their Journey. They left our village with high hopes and strong hearts, but in the end it appears they were not what we had expected them to be."
When the first finished speaking, the second woman raised her head, "Let us take a moment to remember them. To the families of Eka, Jonas, and Edwin, we are sorry for your loss."
Through the crowd a few muffled sobs could be heard, but other than that the village remained relatively quiet.
"They wouldn't have died if you hadn't sent them out!" Someone shouted, breaking the silence that had fallen upon the square, "Neither of you are sorry, you killed them!"
The two elderly woman each gave a small nod, and in seconds three of the village Protectors pushed their way through the crowd to carry the challenger out.
"You're trying to silence us!" A lady screamed, her voice cracking at the effort, "See what they're doing?! They kill us off and pretend it's okay, but it's not! Edwin was my son!"
Another two nods were given by the elders and once again the Protectors marched in and carried her way.

Ettana "Etta" Ravich
(Part Two)

Location: The village of Bregar

Etta felt a hand touch her shoulder and she looked up to see her mother now standing beside her, "Can you believe those people? The Fiddleson sisters are trying to save this village, not murder everyone in it." the woman muttered under her breath, "It's disgusting to think I was friends with those two."
Etta gave a half-hearted nod of agreement, but the memory of the lady's pained face kept her from using her words.

"Me and my sister have watched every one of you carefully. During these long four years, we have gotten to know all of you better, we have become closer friends, and we have collected all that we needed to make the final decision that is to be announced today. For some, we have payed closer attention to than others, and with great honor those will be the Chosen who will hopefully reach their success."
The second sister announced happily, a small smile creeping across her weathered face. As she spoke, she showed no sign of being bothered by the two people who had challenged her and her sister. There was no guilt in her eyes, no weight to her voice. She had done this many times before, this occasion was no different to her than the ones before it.

"All of you are great, but some of you have proved to be greater." The first chipped in, a smile was on her face now as well,
"This Time of Choosing, I am pleased to announce to newest of the Chosen, and may their ancestors guide them through their struggles and return them safely back home. Wynston, of the Banes family. Syrin, of the Kohen's. Kara, of the Nash's. Ettana, of the Ravich family, and Lyrael of the Yunoki's!"

Etta's heart began racing. Her name had been called. Her name. Her. Etta had thought that it wouldn't happen, but...
She felt a shove from her brother Simon, and the girl was reminded that now she was expected to walk up to the Fiddleson sisters along with the other four. There would be time for thinking later.
Quickly her legs carried her to the middle of the square and she took her place beside the brown haired boy.

"The five of you are very clever indeed." One of the sisters whispered to them, her eyes shining brighter than usual, "I believe that each of you will succeed." Then, the woman turned back towards the crowd, "Let us give a cheer for our Chosen! As usual, they are granted the afternoon to pack what belongings they choose and visit who they want, then just before dusk the Gates will be opened and our Chosen will leave for their Journey!"

Lyrael Yunoki

Location: Village square of Bregar

To see the usually buzzing alleys of the village so quiet and deserted was eerie in a way Lyrael had never felt before ... well that really wasn't true. To be honest, she felt like that on one day once every few years. The day of selection or the Time of Choosing, as their elders called it. And once again that day had arrived and every single person in Bregar had gathered in the village square to hear the decision of the Fiddlestone Sisters. This year though, Lyrael was even more tense, almost scared, of the sisters' choices because now she was old enough to be chosen as well.

Her grandmother hurried the young girl further through the village, muttering under her breath. "Stay quiet, do not fidget, stand back and DO NOT DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF!" she hissed through her teeth. Lyrael knew that her grandmother was scared that she might be chosen today and only wanted to protect her. She herself was scared afterall, not knowing what lay behind the walls of the village wasn't very reassuring. Together they hurried ahead to stand with the other people in the village square, the second gong of the bell telling them to be quiet now. In the centre of the square were two elderly women, the Fiddlestone sister.

Lyrael couldn't help but fidget about nervously, her eyes gliding over the people to see if she could make out a familiar face. Suddenly, there was someone by her side, talking excitedly to her and she had to stiffle a giggle. "Of course I remember you, Wynston." she said in a hushed voice to not draw attention to them. "And who doesn't." she sighed and bit her lower lip nervously. "Do you think we might be choosen?" Lyrael asked him worriedly. If she was going to have to leave the village she at least wanted to have a friend along with her.

She wanted to say more, but then one of the Fiddlestone sisters started to speak and she quickled turned her attention to the front.

"Welcome! Four years have passed since our last great event, and in that time we have unfortunately lost three of four valuable lives of the people who were sent out on their Journey. They left our village with high hopes and strong hearts, but in the end it appears they were not what we had expected them to be."
"Let us take a moment to remember them. To the families of Eka, Jonas, and Edwin, we are sorry for your loss."

Lyrael swallowed hard. The thought of three young people dying out there in the wild was horrible. Why did the elders make them do that? Why would they send them out on their own? Without protection? She couldn't comprehend it. Not at all.
Someone in the crowd seemed to share her opinion and she tried not to nod in agreement when he put voice to his thoughts. But soon the man was led away by the protectors. Lyrael glared at them. They were like dogs! Trained by the Fiddlestone sisters. It was awful and she shook her head sadly. People had lost their children, siblings, cousins. Who gave these two old women the right to send children to their death? To break up families like that?

"Me and my sister have watched every one of you carefully. During these long four years, we have gotten to know all of you better, we have become closer friends, and we have collected all that we needed to make the final decision that is to be announced today. For some, we have payed closer attention to than others, and with great honor those will be the Chosen who will hopefully reach their success."

The women had started to talk again, as if nothing had interrupted their speech. The smile on their faces did not serve to calm her though, it was creepy.

"All of you are great, but some of you have proved to be greater. This Time of Choosing, I am pleased to announce to newest of the Chosen, and may their ancestors guide them through their struggles and return them safely back home. Wynston, of the Banes family..."

Lyrael looked over to the boy standing next to her, her eyes wide.

"...Syrin, of the Kohen's. Kara, of the Nash's. Ettana, of the Ravich family, and Lyrael of the Yunoki's!"

It took a few seconds for the words to sink in. Only the stiffled gasp that escaped her grandmother's mouth told Lyrael that the last name really had been her own. "Oh no..." she breathed. Automatically, she felt her feet carried her forward. Her mind seemed to be detached from her body, otherwise she wouldn't be able to move now, but here she was, following Wynston to the center of the square. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the other three stepping forward as well. Two girls and another boy. Lyrael could feel her body shaking slightly as she stood between Wynston and the other boy. He seemed to be older than them, while the girl who stood on his other side appeared to be about her own age.

"The five of you are very clever indeed. I believe that each of you will succeed. Let us give a cheer for our Chosen! As usual, they are granted the afternoon to pack what belongings they choose and visit who they want, then just before dusk the Gates will be opened and our Chosen will leave for their Journey!"

Her brain barely registered the following words. Her breath came in shallow gasps. Now she would be forced to leave the village, her grandmother and go into the wild, probably to get killed their like so many other children before her.

Location: Bregar Village

It was the day of The Choosing, the day the Fiddleson sisters would pick a small group of young adults to venture into the Wild. Some feared this day, others begged for it to come in hopes that they would be granted the honor to be one of the Chosen. As for Jens, he didn't feel dread nor excitement. This was just another day for him. He'd witnessed plenty of these 'Choosing' days growing up, so it wasn't anything new to him. He wasn't really look forward to it since it would just be a wait of time for him to go. He wouldn't be chosen anyway, but unfortunately every citizen had to attend this ceremony.

He'd woken up early that morning to get his siblings cleaned and dressed, not feeling any concern for them since they were still too young to participate. His father had already left to do who knows what. Jens had noticed his fathers early absence on these particular days a while back. For some reason the man always disappeared until the last minute. They'd meet up with him in the main square anyway.

And meet up they did. After the normal routine of cookies Yui and Arthur breakfast, Jens dressed himself in a plain white shirt and dark pants before leading the twins to the center of the village, finding it too much of a hassle to dress all proper-like like most of the citizens of Bregar did on these days. They'd been waiting there for a while as others showed up. Yui and Arthur begun to braid each others bright red hair out of boredom. Only seconds before the ceremony finally started their father found them in the middle of the crowd and now stood beside Jens who held Yui's hand who in turn held Arthur's.

The rest went on as it usually did every few years. The old ladies would have a farewell speech about the past Choosing. Sometimes the public would protest, sometimes they wouldn't. This time around there were two, one being the mother of one of the fallen. As the Protectors lead them away Jens felt his sisters hand tighten around his and he glanced down at her with a small smile to reassure her, though it probably helped her more than it did himself. He hated when people protested. Didn't they know it was useless to resist? Nothing good would come out of it so what was the point...

The ceremony continued on without any hesitation after the two were escorted away and Jens returned his attention to the Fiddleson sisters as they spoke. They would pick their Chosen soon, the teens would leave and few to none would return, and Jens would go home and continue living his life normally everyday. He promised Arthur that he'd teach him how to tell how long ago an animal had passed by by the tracks the next day. They'd have to get up pretty early for that.

"All of you are great, but some of you have proved to be greater. This Time of Choosing, I am pleased to announce to newest of the Chosen, and may their ancestors guide them through their struggles--"

Yui had to go to a birthday tomorrow too. They yet had to pick out a gift. Jens had suggested a few things, but the little red-head had shook her head at each one and pat him on the head with her sketchbook complaining that they were all too boyish, but he'd only been joking around with her. He had a much better idea, but that would be a surprise for tomorrow.

--and return them safely back home. Wynston, of the Banes family..."

He realized he'd started to space out at the ground in his thoughts, but hearing the name of the first Chosen he looked up. He might as well pay attention to the poor souls who'd be shoved out into the unknown. However, the next name to be called was his own. At first he felt complete disbelief and almost thought that maybe he just imagined it. Until he felt his fathers hand on his shoulder. Jen's turned his head to look at him with an expression on confusion, but his father only stared forward with terror in his eyes. Jens swallowed dryly and let go of his sisters hand, knowing exactly what he needed to be doing next.

He didn't really hear the names that were called after his own, after all he was a little too in shock for that, but as he stepped up and the other Chosen joined him he could somewhat put names to faces. He'd taken in a deep breath before turning to face the village crowd, so he was a little calmer now, but he still felt shocked. The last thing he expected, and the last thing he wanted was to be chosen, yet here he was. He moved his eyes from side to side to get a better look at the other teen with him as the sisters continued to speak. Most of them looked excited actually, aside from the smaller girl beside him. Anyone would probably be able to tell that she was clearly afraid, poor girl.

Then there was himself. How was he feeling about the current situation? He wasn't really sure if he was afraid, but he knew he wasn't excited or thrilled. He was still having a hard time actually taking in the fact that he'd been Chosen. What the heck did he have to offer anyway? He'd always done a good job of staying off the radar, and not even on purpose. He was just a naturally unnoticeable person, or so he'd always thought. Apparently, though, the sisters had other plans for him.
