Wynston "Winnie" Bains
Location: Breakfast table in Bregar

Image
"Wynston?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you think our trees are small on purpose?"
"Yes. it's so we can't see beyond the gate."
Wynston's friend paused for a moment. "...Good point. What do you think it's like out there?" "I think it's fun out there. Everyone wants to leave sometimes, so it must be." Wynston reasoned with the logic his mind allowed him to remember. "Do you want to leave?" His friend finally asked. "... Maybe." Wynston swung his feet around and readjusted his balance. His friend remained silent for a while, almost as if he had left. "Hey. Are you still there?" Wynston asked, looking around the branch for any trace of him. But Wynston soon realized he was all alone up at the top branch. He's always been.

"Wynston, who were you talking to?"
His mother asked, scraping some eggs off of the pan onto Wynston's plate. "No one. I was thinking aloud." He replied with a mouth stuffed with pancakes. (His mother hardly understood a word he said, but nodded in agreement. ) Wynston licked a few drops of syrup off of his lips and gave a satisfied sigh. "Mum, this is really good. I don't remember you making such a large breakfast before! Is it my birthday or something?" He questioned, childishly placing his spoon in his orange juice and sipping it out. "Oh good heavens no, your birthday was months ago! Today's the day young adults like you will be picked to go on an adventure. So when The Fiddleson Sisters see you lined up with that full tummy, I want them to think 'My, that's a nice looking boy right there! So strong and healthy. Let's pick him to go on the Journey." Ms Bains explained with a cheerful look, reaching across the table to place her hand under her son's chin, pretending to inspect him. "Oh." Wynston responded, not sure what to think about that. His mother continued on about how she would have liked to go on the adventure, and how she would have came back a strong woman. But before she got into details, she caught a glimpse at the stove clock and realized it was time to get ready. (They had 25 minutes left before it was time to leave. )

Wynston closed the house door behind him and locked it with his mother's key, then quickly followed behind his mother respectively. "Good. we're not late." His mother spoke, watching other people leave their homes just around the same time they were. That let a little stress off of his mother's shoulder's, at least. but just as she said that, Wynston spotted a girl from his school. he perked up and immediately started running towards her. "Be right back!" He yelled back to his mom, who didn't seem to mind.

"Hi! Remember me from school? I'm Wynston! You're uh.. You're Lyrael, right? Well I'm Wynston!" he spoke hurriedly, hardly giving eye contact at all. "Today's the day people are gonna be picked to go on an adventure. Did you know that?"

Thomas Arclight
Location: Somewhere in the Wild, on a mountain

"Ugh.... What happened?"
Thomas looked around, as he was lying on the ground near his cabin. All he felt was a sharp pain near his temples, and his vision was quite blurry. Something he could see, however, was obscuring his view. It seemed to be a Vinat, and it was crawling on his face. Thomas quickly stood up, started hitting his face, and yelling."AAH! Get off me, you stupid-" When he managed to pull it off, he saw Bregar from a totally different view. Even though the cabin wasn't in the forest, the spectacular view from the mountain nearby was amazing. When he looked around, he saw the puny water pickup connected to Gabe's house. Smiling, he treaded town the mountain's path. It was really steep. He managed to lose his grip on the rocks, and Thomas was sent flying down. "AAH!" Grabbing onto a rock, he was able to stabilize his grip climbing down. "C-crap.. If only Nolan and the others were here.. This wouldn't be a problem!"Heaving himself up, he slowly descended off the foot of the mountain. When he reached the breakfast area, all that he saw a bunch of food lying in baskets. No one was there at the moment, as Thomas could tell. Grabbing a loaf of bread and cream, he sat down and ate till he was content. "Mmm, this is good! Whoever got this must've worked hard or bought this for a bunch..." He felt kinda weird though; He was eating stuff without the others knowing! And he also felt he was being watched for some reason...Could someone have set up a trap?!

Location: Village of Bregar | On the outside wall

Kara Nash, the brave and daring girl of the whole village, sat on the wall that separated her from the outside world she so badly wanted to pass through. The outside world was the goal of her lifetime and she wanted to start accomplishing it as soon as possible. The only problem was that people, like her parents, didn't want her to leave.

Outside was dangerous, full of traps, mysteries, and lies, but to Kara, it was going to be a place of adventure, uniqueness, and wonder. She wanted to see all that she could as soon as possible.

The purple haired girl reached her hand out where it went over the invisible barrier between Bregar and the outside world, "So close..." She murmured to herself, lowering her hand slowly, "Yet so far away..." Kara sighed and only continued to look at the dark forest that was waiting for her.

"Kara, get down from the wall!" One of the younger children called out. He was short, tiny, and hardly older than 10, but had the personality of a bull, "I'm going to go tell your parents and you're going to get into a lot of trouble! You know we're not allowed to look over the walls!" He shouted up to her.

Kara looked down at him and ran her fair hand through her silky hair and responded maturely, "Feel free to." She smiled, though she seemed to have been mocking the child she knew to tattle on her, "It won't matter much. Today is the day when a certain few people will get to travel outside these walls..." She looked outside, a twinkle of excitement in her eyes, "I'm certain I'll be one of them." She said confidentially.

"Whatever, crazy old lady!" The child yelled to her, sticking his tongue out and running away, laughing. Kara rolled her eyes as he stomped away, but with a hint of a genuine smile on her face.

In the end, just as the child had told her, Kara leapt down from the wall, quickly, yet gracefully, almost reflecting her own personality as she did so. When she reached the ground with a perfect landing, she stretched her arms and looked up at the sky to see a flock of birds pass over the wall, "I'll be out there soon." She told herself again, "Hopefully..."

Kara couldn't tell the future, but she had a feeling she'd be one of the chosen ones to go outside the wall. She wanted to go. She wanted to leave her home to go adventure. If she wasn't picked, what would happen? She'd live a boring and dull life within the walls of Bregar? If she wasn't picked, she'd make sure she'd escape to the forest the night of, but all Kara could hope for was her name being called when the time would come for selection, "I need to find that certain place anyways." She said and began to casually stroll through her home village, also hoping that no one had seen her take a peek over the walls. Though, even if anyone did, it wouldn't be a surprise. Nearly everyone knew how much she, especially, wanted to leave the place.

Ettana "Etta" Ravich
(Part One)

Location: The village of Bregar

It was quiet in the small village, as usual, but that wasn't what was bothering Ettana as she and her brothers were rushed outside by their parents. No, it wasn't just 'quiet' in Bregar, it was silent. Aside from the distant sounds of the few children who weren't being supervised, not a soul in the village was daring to speak.
The bell had rung five minutes ago, giving the families just enough time to finish their morning routines before the second bell rung, and by then the people were expected to already be in the village square ready to listen.
The Ravich family, just like every Choosing, was one of the last few to arrive.
"Ettana, stand beside Simon." Etta's mother said quietly, pushing the girl to where she was supposed to go. "Don't make that face, Adam, and Bradly, why didn't you change your shirt?"
"No one is going to care." Etta sighed, folding her arms over her chest, "Hardly anyone from our family ever gets picked, anyway."

"Be quiet, Ettana." Her father hushed.
Etta scowled, but didn't say another word.

In the middle of the square, two elderly woman stood side-by-side. Their hair was a grey/white colour and pulled back tightly into buns, their skin drooped from their bodies, and on their faces was what appeared to be an everlasting frown. Despite their strict hair, hanging skin, and the disapproving glances they casted, it was their eyes that was the most unwelcoming thing about them. They were light, like the clouds, but one look was a sharp was a sword.
"Welcome!" The first woman called out, though she barely had to raise her voice in order to be heard, "Four years have passed since our last great event, and in that time we have unfortunately lost three of four valuable lives of the people who were sent out on their Journey. They left our village with high hopes and strong hearts, but in the end it appears they were not what we had expected them to be."
When the first finished speaking, the second woman raised her head, "Let us take a moment to remember them. To the families of Eka, Jonas, and Edwin, we are sorry for your loss."
Through the crowd a few muffled sobs could be heard, but other than that the village remained relatively quiet.
"They wouldn't have died if you hadn't sent them out!" Someone shouted, breaking the silence that had fallen upon the square, "Neither of you are sorry, you killed them!"
The two elderly woman each gave a small nod, and in seconds three of the village Protectors pushed their way through the crowd to carry the challenger out.
"You're trying to silence us!" A lady screamed, her voice cracking at the effort, "See what they're doing?! They kill us off and pretend it's okay, but it's not! Edwin was my son!"
Another two nods were given by the elders and once again the Protectors marched in and carried her way.

Ettana "Etta" Ravich
(Part Two)

Location: The village of Bregar

Etta felt a hand touch her shoulder and she looked up to see her mother now standing beside her, "Can you believe those people? The Fiddleson sisters are trying to save this village, not murder everyone in it." the woman muttered under her breath, "It's disgusting to think I was friends with those two."
Etta gave a half-hearted nod of agreement, but the memory of the lady's pained face kept her from using her words.

"Me and my sister have watched every one of you carefully. During these long four years, we have gotten to know all of you better, we have become closer friends, and we have collected all that we needed to make the final decision that is to be announced today. For some, we have payed closer attention to than others, and with great honor those will be the Chosen who will hopefully reach their success."
The second sister announced happily, a small smile creeping across her weathered face. As she spoke, she showed no sign of being bothered by the two people who had challenged her and her sister. There was no guilt in her eyes, no weight to her voice. She had done this many times before, this occasion was no different to her than the ones before it.

"All of you are great, but some of you have proved to be greater." The first chipped in, a smile was on her face now as well,
"This Time of Choosing, I am pleased to announce to newest of the Chosen, and may their ancestors guide them through their struggles and return them safely back home. Wynston, of the Banes family. Syrin, of the Kohen's. Kara, of the Nash's. Ettana, of the Ravich family, and Lyrael of the Yunoki's!"

Etta's heart began racing. Her name had been called. Her name. Her. Etta had thought that it wouldn't happen, but...
She felt a shove from her brother Simon, and the girl was reminded that now she was expected to walk up to the Fiddleson sisters along with the other four. There would be time for thinking later.
Quickly her legs carried her to the middle of the square and she took her place beside the brown haired boy.

"The five of you are very clever indeed." One of the sisters whispered to them, her eyes shining brighter than usual, "I believe that each of you will succeed." Then, the woman turned back towards the crowd, "Let us give a cheer for our Chosen! As usual, they are granted the afternoon to pack what belongings they choose and visit who they want, then just before dusk the Gates will be opened and our Chosen will leave for their Journey!"

Lyrael Yunoki

Location: Village square of Bregar

To see the usually buzzing alleys of the village so quiet and deserted was eerie in a way Lyrael had never felt before ... well that really wasn't true. To be honest, she felt like that on one day once every few years. The day of selection or the Time of Choosing, as their elders called it. And once again that day had arrived and every single person in Bregar had gathered in the village square to hear the decision of the Fiddlestone Sisters. This year though, Lyrael was even more tense, almost scared, of the sisters' choices because now she was old enough to be chosen as well.

Her grandmother hurried the young girl further through the village, muttering under her breath. "Stay quiet, do not fidget, stand back and DO NOT DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF!" she hissed through her teeth. Lyrael knew that her grandmother was scared that she might be chosen today and only wanted to protect her. She herself was scared afterall, not knowing what lay behind the walls of the village wasn't very reassuring. Together they hurried ahead to stand with the other people in the village square, the second gong of the bell telling them to be quiet now. In the centre of the square were two elderly women, the Fiddlestone sister.

Lyrael couldn't help but fidget about nervously, her eyes gliding over the people to see if she could make out a familiar face. Suddenly, there was someone by her side, talking excitedly to her and she had to stiffle a giggle. "Of course I remember you, Wynston." she said in a hushed voice to not draw attention to them. "And who doesn't." she sighed and bit her lower lip nervously. "Do you think we might be choosen?" Lyrael asked him worriedly. If she was going to have to leave the village she at least wanted to have a friend along with her.

She wanted to say more, but then one of the Fiddlestone sisters started to speak and she quickled turned her attention to the front.

"Welcome! Four years have passed since our last great event, and in that time we have unfortunately lost three of four valuable lives of the people who were sent out on their Journey. They left our village with high hopes and strong hearts, but in the end it appears they were not what we had expected them to be."
"Let us take a moment to remember them. To the families of Eka, Jonas, and Edwin, we are sorry for your loss."

Lyrael swallowed hard. The thought of three young people dying out there in the wild was horrible. Why did the elders make them do that? Why would they send them out on their own? Without protection? She couldn't comprehend it. Not at all.
Someone in the crowd seemed to share her opinion and she tried not to nod in agreement when he put voice to his thoughts. But soon the man was led away by the protectors. Lyrael glared at them. They were like dogs! Trained by the Fiddlestone sisters. It was awful and she shook her head sadly. People had lost their children, siblings, cousins. Who gave these two old women the right to send children to their death? To break up families like that?

"Me and my sister have watched every one of you carefully. During these long four years, we have gotten to know all of you better, we have become closer friends, and we have collected all that we needed to make the final decision that is to be announced today. For some, we have payed closer attention to than others, and with great honor those will be the Chosen who will hopefully reach their success."

The women had started to talk again, as if nothing had interrupted their speech. The smile on their faces did not serve to calm her though, it was creepy.

"All of you are great, but some of you have proved to be greater. This Time of Choosing, I am pleased to announce to newest of the Chosen, and may their ancestors guide them through their struggles and return them safely back home. Wynston, of the Banes family..."

Lyrael looked over to the boy standing next to her, her eyes wide.

"...Syrin, of the Kohen's. Kara, of the Nash's. Ettana, of the Ravich family, and Lyrael of the Yunoki's!"

It took a few seconds for the words to sink in. Only the stiffled gasp that escaped her grandmother's mouth told Lyrael that the last name really had been her own. "Oh no..." she breathed. Automatically, she felt her feet carried her forward. Her mind seemed to be detached from her body, otherwise she wouldn't be able to move now, but here she was, following Wynston to the center of the square. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the other three stepping forward as well. Two girls and another boy. Lyrael could feel her body shaking slightly as she stood between Wynston and the other boy. He seemed to be older than them, while the girl who stood on his other side appeared to be about her own age.

"The five of you are very clever indeed. I believe that each of you will succeed. Let us give a cheer for our Chosen! As usual, they are granted the afternoon to pack what belongings they choose and visit who they want, then just before dusk the Gates will be opened and our Chosen will leave for their Journey!"

Her brain barely registered the following words. Her breath came in shallow gasps. Now she would be forced to leave the village, her grandmother and go into the wild, probably to get killed their like so many other children before her.
