Hana basically carries her entire life in her backpack; a few sets of extra clothing, food, water, matches when she can get them. Hana also carries a pistol (and ammunition), a hunting knife, and more spare sets of socks than is probably necessary. Aside from the survival gear, Hana loves to read and almost always has some books in her bag. She never misses an opportunity to grab a book she's not read before if it's in good condition.

H I S T O R Y
Hana was the only child of Japanese immigrants, and for the most part her childhood was normal. Her family couldn't get into a QZ after the outbreak, but they did find a little community to survive with. They pooled resources, worked together; it seemed almost like a dream at the time, but all dreams do eventually end. A few years in there was a power grab, then an abuse of said power, and suddenly their safe haven didn't feel so safe anymore, but it was hard to get out. She was twenty one when her parents gave her a backpack of supplies, a fierce hug, and the responsibility to look after a little boy. They couldn't all get out, but two of them could, so two sets of parents chose their children over themselves.
Hana always did her best to keep them out of trouble, to keep them safe, fed, warm. It all very quickly became too much for her, though. She wasn't equipped to take care of a seven year old all alone out on the road, she had no way of knowing what happened to her parents (though she was fairly convinced they were dead), and she just knew that she and Hunter were going to die of hunger or cold- or worse. She was ready to just give up and die. Hunter, young as he was, stepped up to be strong enough for both of them. It wasn't fair that he had to do it, and it wasn't fair that Hana let him, but he kept them together, kept them going. Hana sloppily handled the tougher stuff at first, while Hunter held her hand and offered his own emotional strength, and he took over completely as soon as he was able. Eventually- though almost surely much more slowly than Hunter would have liked- Hana's heart healed enough for her to take on a more equal load.
Hunter is the closest thing to family that Hana has left, and they've been running and moving and changing homes for so long. Bouncing between settlements, afraid to stay anywhere too long or risk repeating their past. They're tired, but security just doesn't feel safe to Hana. So they keep moving, keep running, keep fighting. People, each other, their very natures. Always fighting.
