The newest generation of heroes try their hands at conquering the maze. What are the secrets that lie within?(Still accepting char's)

1,360 readers have visited The Labyrinth of Darkness since Ark Reahver created it.

Introduction

For hundreds of years the people of Terra, have lived alongside the Labyrinth. An ancient ruin that spans the world. Lying just below the planets surface the maze harbors dark creatures many treasures and endless mysteries. The labyrinth has acted as a big influence on the world. A common lifestyle amongst the people in Terra is to be an explorer of the labyrinth. Recently the creatures inside the labyrinth have grown stronger and more violent, sometimes even leaving the maze and attacking villages and cities.

The city of Airegrand is located close to many labyrinth gates. The city's location provides excellent opportunities to be an explorer, thats why many adventurer's and scholars live in the city. Because of it's accessibility to the maze, the city has a thriving market in weaponry and spell, harboring some of the most renowned blacksmiths, and magicians the city of Airegard makes sure to prepare its adventurer's with the best equipment.

Once a year the people of Airegard have a competition to see who can go down to the furthest levels, but no one has ever gone past the third level. The third level, is located two floors down from the first levels of the maze, deep underground. What little is know about the third level is that it is completely dark, because the tunnels lack the common "rune-lights" which illuminate the hallways of the upper floors. Some of the fiercest and strongest creatures lie hidden within those dark halls.

This year many promising new adventurers have gathered in preparation for the event, and the city is currently having a large celebration. When creatures began to attack the king decided to raise the stakes of the competiotion, he will surrender the throne to whomever finds a solution to the monster attacks.

Will you be the hero that finds the reason to the recent attacks? Will you be the one to save the world? Or will you discover a secret so big that it will change the world of Terra forever?

Background information:

Setting: The story takes place in a medieval steam-punk world.

Teleportation stones. Along the hallways of the maze, adventurer;s have come across Large glowing stones marked with runes. When a teleportation stone is marked with that symbol, the traveler can exit the maze, and return to where they left off without having to travel back to town. They can also instantly return to where they left off by using the stone at the mouth of the Maze.

The maze: The hallways of the maze range from different sizes, some narrow others wide and roomy. The maze is not only filled with hallways, there are natural terrains formed all over the underground passage ways. There are parts that seem like forests, others are cold and icy. The further down you go in the maze the more extravagant, and large the hallways get.

The competition: The competition works as follows: While adventurer's are exploring the maze they are to find certain check points inside the labyrinth. These check points have been cleared of monsters and are safe places to rest. While there you are to find a representative, and receive the challenge for that day. If you complete the challenge you are to report back to the representative and provide evidence of your victory. Your team and yourself will be awarded points.

Adventurers: The daring explorer's that travel into the depths of the labyrinth come from many different backgrounds, and have unique skills.
Some are royal knights skilled in the way of the sword, others may be wise scholars trained in the ways of magic, or a skilled marksman trained in using new weaponry. Every one of them has their own reason to travel into the depths of the maze, greed, righteousnesses, or the pure thrill of battle.

Teams: The deepest parts of the maze are very dangerous, and many adventurers decide to group up to improve their chances. They give themselves a name, and often wear a logo or emblem somewhere on their armor. The most famous Teams are recognized with respect and admiration by all other adventurer's.

Magic: The magic in the world exists through the crafting of runes. Magic is fueled by mana, the life energy of the planet, when someone uses a rune symbol the rune directs and controls mana and changes it into what the rune was created to do. The runes are usually weaved by channeling mana to one's fingertips and quickly creating the pattern in the air. Expert magicians often tattoo symbols onto themselves and weapons for quick activation. The more powerful the spell the harder it is to keep control.

Guns and new weaponry: The creation of the gun is still very new and many of the weapons that are currently in use are very difficult to use. They are very powerful and provide a great advantage in battle. The sudden rise in monster activity has created an explosion of new inventions and weaponry.

Rhev quickly wove a Rune in the air. He landed after avoiding the monsters attack, skidding along the stone floor. The rune was surging with power, Rhev swung his arm around and put his palm on the floor. "Earth spire!" A seismic wave quickly made its way under the lizard-man, leaving a trail of shifted stone, it the erupted below the monster as a sharp rock that had pierced the lizard. After a loud scream, the monster vanished with a dull flash of light, leaving behind a small glowing orb. The monsters, soul. It would return to the depths of the labyrinth where the beast would be reborn.

Rhev let out a quick sigh. "Guess that does it for today," he reached into his pack and retrieved a fang he knocked off the lizard-man. "I should take this back to camp."
He walked down the hallway following the pull of his knife. After a few minutes of walking, he came across a teleporter. Stepping in front of it he placed his hand of the stone and channeled the magic. A soft blue light surrounded him and a second later he was back near the entrance to the maze, the camp was nearby. Rhev walked towards the camp contemplating what he was going to do the rest of the day. The first challenges were always pretty simple. You had to take something from a creature before you killed it. You had to be careful because as soon as the monsters die they fade away.

Rhev took a seat next to the fireplace, others had come and sat near him as well, they probably finished their challenge as well. He had gained twenty points for being the first to complete today's challenge. His current standing on the list was 75. He had a way's to go to get to the top. he needed 200 more points to catch up to first place. The crimson wings. It was tough to do it all alone, he would have to find a partner. Maybe someone around the campsite would be willing to join up with him.

Shift walked back into camp. Yeah, the first task had been easy enough, but he wasnt the first one back, either. with two or three others there before him, He looked about, noticing one man who had clearly been finished longer than the others. Targeting him as the most useful of the bunch, he slowly approached. "You got done first, I'm assuming?" He asked the man, who held a fang in his right hand. Shift saluted, waiting for the other mans reply, having had to salute for most others for his entire life.

Shift was nervous about this whole thing. People depended on magic for almost everything; especially in the labrinth. He knew hardly anything about the magic, and the only thing he was proficient at was cutting, and not everything in this never ending dungeon was cuttable, he full well knew. Or, not by a normal blade, anyway. This man looked as though he could cast runes well, and knew a little of what was going on. Shift however, didnt fully understand the maze, and needed to figure out what was what around here. As far as he knew, there was a large maze by the town, and the monsters were getting restless, so there was a competition of sorts to get as far into the maze as you can, and figure what was causing all of this dissaray in the monsters. Out of the corner of his eye, Shift saw a board with the top 10 competetors in the Labrinth. Crimson Wings was at the top of the list, far ahead of even 2nd place. hopefully this man could answer his questions, and maybe even help him.

Sigfried sat with his black helm next to him, his gray eyes staring intently into the flames of the fire. He had not taken part in today’s competition as he was… tired to say the least. He had little interest in it to tell the truth, he went in there for glory, so he never looked at the scoreboard, and half the time didn’t look at the quest, merely entering. In the corner of his mouth was a short cob pipe, from which the knight was taking puffs from and blowing them in the air.
In 11 years he had never seen so many people in this city, hoping to gain glory and fame… with a side of riches no doubt. In his mind most of them would die in that maze… it had gotten far more dangerous than it had been. His long brown hair fell around his scarred face, as the smoke trail drifted up from the pipe into the sky.

Glancing around the fire, he had noted the magic user arrive from the cave first, which was a boon to the young kid, but he had far to go. He was not surprised when another young man came to speak with the young mage, as the kid’s talent would attract more partners. Although the man looked stiff, he seemed capable in his own right.

With a sigh, he took the pipe out of his mouth and tapped it against a stone, empting it of its contents. As he was empting his pipe, a young group of adventures stopped in front of him, their youthful confidence seeming to reek off them. The leader of the bunch stepped forth and spoke with a confident tone “Hey old man! We heard you knew stuff about that maze”

Sigfried looked up at the young warrior, with his cold gray eyes, and the young adventure met it with bravery… or stupidity depending on your view “I am only 31, and what stuff?” the young man seized up Sigfried and declared loudly “We are going to kill a minotaur… wanna come?”
Sigfried thought it over, and shook his head. “Sorry kid, I don’t want to.” The young man growled and muttered “Coward.” Anger erupted in Sigfried eyes which turned quickly into an icy cold stare, and he stood drawing his sword. “What did you say runt?”
The young man drew his own sword, and spoke louder “you’re a worthless, old coward” and without another word Sigfried swung his sword in an ark, that the young man deflected with his own blade, his group widening to give the man enough room to duel the knight. As their swords hit and sparks flew the man looked at the swords with concentration phasing out all else, and Sigfried promptly punched the man in the face with his left hand, due to his utmost concentration on Sigfrieds blade he did not see his fist. The blow knocked the kid off balance and moving with experience, he swiped the kids legs out from under him and brought the sword point first down…

The man went white with fear as the sword point went down at his face, only to have it stick in the ground inches away from his face. Lowering himself near the young man Sigfried spoke calmly and softly, like a teacher reprimanding a student “You’re not ready for a minotaur, hunt a lizardmen or orc first. Than once you can defeat them well enough come back and I’ll join you.” Moving the sword form the ground he sheathed the blade, and offered his hand to the young adventure. Pulling the man up he dusted off his back, and gave him a friendly pat on the back.

The man and his group left somewhat embarrassed over losing, but Sigfried hoped they listened to his advice… as if they faced a Minotaur at their level; they would be dead in minutes.

Jessie walked over a hill finally coming into view of the labyrinth. She looked on over it seeing the view a head and nodded on her resolve, “He we go let’s see what’s going on down below.” She spoke to the air. Walking down towards the labyrinth she held tightly to her sword with one hand ready in case anything decided to jump out at her. She was fast her best asset and what has kept her alive though the years she had been a knight.

She noticed there were others there and around not to surprised though she seemed to be the only one that came alone. She was from a smaller kingdom and they couldn’t afford to send out big parties to investigate. Her best bet was possibly team up with another party to further her investigation. She saw a few camps from her location and began walking in their general direction unsure of what one to go to and whether they are hostile or friendly.

Rhev watched as a new face approached him, he had just finished his task as well. When he was greeted, it caught Rhev off guard, people around these parts aren't usually this friendly. Before he had a chance to answer a fight had begun, not very friendly indeed. The older man, he had seen him many times before, he was an expert with the maze and a great fighter. He had seen him fight a few times against some other adventurers, not many stood a chance against him, probably because those who can simply know better. On one particular occasion Rhev was almost bludgeoned by a troll the knight was fighting, some cocky new guy's thought that they could handle it, so far no sign of them this year. Compared to that a minotaur sounded kind of nice. It wouldn't hurt to try and have him be part of his team.

Rhev returned his attention to the soldier. He recognized the rapier, it was only given to high class military men.
"Good morning!" he finally replied, "Or at least I think it's morning, never really can tell inside the maze. Rhev's the name. You look somewhat confused, you new around here?" He stood up and stuck his hand out to properly greet the man. Rhev was used to seeing new adventurer's every year new people gained interest in the maze, while other's decide they've had enough.

Jessie began to notice all the people forming around one campfire as she got closer. She noticed a man with a rapier and messy brown hair talking with another man with shorter silver hair. She watched them for a little bit judging whether or not she should approach them or look at a few other camps. Jessie blinked a bit looking up to see an older man fighting a Minotaur. She paused watching him fight studying his movements. She remembered before she had left home the elder told her some of the things she would see would be different from anything she has ever seen of faced before. She looked back at the men in a minute and ventured forward a bit more. She heard they were talking and waited patiently for them to finish before interjecting.

Clarissa had been the last one out that night. Her shirt was torn and she had a scratch, but she made it out alright. "Well Clarissa, maybe you should have listened to your father and paid more attention to the knights, at least when they were training, then you would have learned to doge!" she spoke to herself. She touched her arm and it hurt, but a little pain wouldn't stop her. Noble or not, she was not fragile and wimpy like some noble women. She noticed a campfire going and came up to the group. "Do you guys mind if I sit here, the night is cool." {Assuming you don't dismiss her like buttheads} She sat down and took a cloth out of her pocket, rubbing off the blood and pressed down, stopping the bleeding. In her other hand she opened it up and in it was a tooth, similar to what another man was holding. She would have been lucky and got the creature by suprise, but she had dropped the metal she was trying to pack in her blunderbuster. In the end she managed to her her pistol and shoot it mercifully, but she didn't like using that, she only had so many bullets. She noticed the nights and the magic users, they were all well adapted. She was a noble girl who rebelled against her father and learned mechanics and sciences, without her weapons, she was useless. "I'd rather die in an adventurer then die of boredom as a proper noble wife" she muttered to herself.

"You could say that, i suppose..." He looked down at the hand that pushed forward waiting for his in this unformal greeting. He slowly put his hand down from his salute, and shook the mans hand. "Names Shift, and I have been to the labrynth before, but so much has changed since then... I dont even recognize the beginnings of this place. I was hoping i could get some help from someone experienced..." He said drifting off, sounding a bit embarrased by his lack of knowledge of this place.

The fight that had happened before ended as quickly as it had started, and as part of his military training, he could asses a situation lighting fast. To the untrained eye, it looked as though Shift hadnt even noticed that a fight had gone down right next to him, when he really just assesed the situation and deemed it not apropriate to interfere. This man, appearing to be in his late 20's or early 30's clearly had it undercontrol, and Shift almost laughed at hearing that the young man wanted to kill a minotaur. Yeah, like someone like him could ever do that. more people were finishing with the test, and coming to the fire, and Shift was not fond of large crowds. His eye flitted back to the silver haired man who was in front of him.

"Right. Well, finding someone to help you should be too hard. Lot''s of people here have a lot of experience." he gave a quick glance to the knight. "You could also try talking to one of the challenge representatives. I'm sure there's one around here somewhere..." Rhev trailed off as he began scanning the campsite. A lot more people were showing up now. "Hmm, your out of luck if you need a map," Rhev said while checking his pack," I sold my last map earlier today. Sorry bud."

He turned back towards the campfire and picked up his things, looking around once more, he noticed that a woman knight had made her way up to them. "If you guys need, something feel free to ask, though I can't guarantee that ill be able to answer your questions." he said addressing both of them.

She noticed everyone sitting around the campfire and more people joining she looked at them. Walking forward a bit she looked and listened in a bit more to them talking about selling the last map and a few other bits and pieces. She waited for a brake in the conversation and posed her question. “Excuse me I was wondering if I could gain any information about this dark Labyrinth.” She moved forward more into the light to show her face. “I’ve just arrived and am looking for some information in what’s going on here also to loan myself if there’s any assistance needed.” She moved a bit taking her hand off her sword and placed it in her coat pocket. She brushed her hair out of her face. “Is there anyone here that might be able to help me?”

"I guess, I can help you guys out." Rhev sighed. "If you really want to know whats going on it's probably better if we go into the maze. I don't like lecturing. Besides it's more fun if i show you." Rhev begun walking around the campfire. "Right now the city is having it's annual competition, to see who can traverse into the deepest parts of the labyrinth." He pointed one finger towards a hallway that lead into the monster infested labyrinth, before continuing.

"Every day a challenge is set up, whenever you finish it you get points. The sooner you finish the bigger the points awarded. Thats why a lot of people set up teams, the more strength you have the easier your chances." As he said that he ran his fingers across one of the feather's on his belt. "The more points you have at the end, the better prizes you can have. This year, first place gets a hundred-thousand gold pieces. Enough gold to earn your place amongst the nobles. Not to mention incredible respect from all the other participants. This time though there is a special prize, whomever gets to the bottom of the labyrinth, and puts and end the the unusual monster attacks will become the new king of Airegard." Rhev took a break to let them take it all in. He had been speaking fairly loud, and noticed that some other new adventurer's were listening to him.

"Listen, I need to go back into the labyrinth, If you guys are still curious you should come with ill talk to you along the way. I would also appreciate your help, gets pretty rough in there when you're alone."

Jessie nodded a bit looking at the man she believed was called Rhev. “Prizes and a competition?” She asked a bit confused about all that. “I mean you aren’t trying to just stop it you’re competing to stop it? She asked him as she began walking into the labyrinth with him. Looking around she took notice of everything around her while making sure to listen to what he said. She heard him mention it gets rough going in alone and nodded. “I wouldn’t mind lending you my assistance in this quest to save the kingdoms.” She held out her hand to him to shake on the new formed alliance.

Shift was following the two close behind, taking in all the information. "what better way to motivate people to get to the bottom of this labrinth mess than a good competition?" he reasoned to the girl. A competition, was always found to be a great way to get people interested in something. Back in his military days, Shift recalled having tournaments with his fellow knights to boost moral and enhance their skills.

"so then the Crimson Wings are in first? How did they get so far ahead with so little time? And if you wouldn't mind, I would love to tag along, if your offering."

"True, it might seem like an odd thing, but it does get some pretty good results." Rhev shook her hand, and smiled at her. "Good to have you." When Shift asked about the crimson wings Rhev tensed up a little bit. "That is a good question. Listen up, there are other ways to get points in the competition. Inside the maze are monster's with incomparable strength, their power and ferocity stands high above all other monsters. When you kill one and bring back proof, you are rewarded with a large amount of points and other gifts. The stronger the monster the more points you get. Thats how the crimson wings is winning this year, they pick a target and hunt it down."

Rhev paused, they had been walking for only a short while and were standing at the mouth of the maze. The camp was still close behind. "I'm going in there to find one of these targets, 'The Walking Armor'. Its a ghostly figure, massive golden armor that moves on its own without some one wearing it. It would be great if you guys helped me. You would also get points for participating." Rhev took a map out, it showed many intricate path ways weaving in and out of each other, they were labyrinth passageways. There were a few red marks imprinted on it, but one of the was circled out. "Thats where were going." He said pointing to it. "Now that I think about it, we're going to need a few more people. Looking back at the campfire he noticed the knight, and a young gunner sitting down. "Hey!" he yelled at the girl, and knight, "I want to hire you guys!"

Shift knew all too well what walking armor was. He also knew a few people to die fighting something like that. "walking armor? That's..." he drifted off, when he heard that it had golden armor. Usually, the stronger and better made the armor, the harder it is to kill. This wouldn't happen to be... The kings old armor... Would it? The one that people have been hunting for? There are few Armors that rival it's quality..." Shift was not looking forward to meeting this thing... But, if it got him more points, and a better understanding of the maze, then he would do it.

Jessie nodded justifying what Shift said comparing it to the tournaments that she had participated in back at home. She looked at the group and nodded. “Very well I agree as well I’m interested in join up with a team best way to stop this is in numbers right.” She asked as she looked around again in the Labyrinth fascinated by everything in it. “And who are these Crimson Wings?” She asked trying to gain as much information as possible before venturing further into the maze. She was cautious about what she was doing and who she was allying herself with.

After hearing the description and hearing about the walking armor. She nodded a bit as she looked over at the map. “Interesting and deadly and the kings armor… made of gold are you sure that’s a good thing to go after right now?” She looked at them. “Is there any more information on how we kill it or the best plan of attack?”

"They're just a group of hunters." Rhev said, a little something more in his voice, something upset and angry but subtle enough not to be noticed. "Each of their member's is extremely skilled, not much else is really know about them." He listened to jessie ask about the Armor. "Listen I' don't really know anything about this thing, all i know is that it's big and gold, and now it's in trouble because I'm coming after it." They walked together for a little bit the hallways brightly lit by runes carved into the ceiling of the maze. This was the top level of the maze nothing too hard here. They eventually came up to the teleportation rune. "Alright, if you guys aren't familiar with these you should listen up. This is a teleporter rune. It works sort of like an elevator. If you use one of these you can enter and leave the maze, easily. All you need is to have a rune-stone with the symbol of the specific teleporter." Rhev pointed towards the large boulder in front of them. This one had a symbol which looked like a slanted "s" with a diagonal line through it. He reached into his bag and pulled out some rocks, and tossed them to it. "Here, use some magic to carve the symbol onto those, it's gonna let us come back to this campsite if we need to."

he reached back into his pack and pulled out one for himself it had a different symbol on it though. He walked up to the teleporter rune and it began to glow. "When you guys are ready come over here and Ill take us to where we need to go."

Clarissa had been quietly, listening to the others. She followed them and when they were about to teleport she came up to the man. "You can have whatever the reward is, I just came here for the experience. I have no need of money, nor would I ever wish to be ruler of anything" she rolled her eyes at that and one could tell she had no interest in nobility. While she had been listening to them around the campfire, she had dug into the ground, looking for stones, she had found quite a few, and saved them in her bag for her blunderbuster. She only had 19 bullets for her pistol, and she intended to save them.

She looked at the stone she was given and began carving the rune on it with her small dagger she pulled from her boot. She didn’t have any particular magical ability but she had picked up enough to enchant the rock. Looked at the group again and pocketed the stone. She was still thinking about the armor and how to go about killing something she knew little about. She shook her head and decided to focus on the task at head figuring she would get the information when they arrived and faced the armor. “Before we go out and fight this thing I’m Sir Jessica D Razorwind Lady Knight.” She said introducing herself first before asking for the names of the others.

"Well then it's good to meet you Jessica, my name is Rhev Naldern, newly inducted Spell-knight of the royal army and son of the famous scholar, Desmund Naldern." He looked at the girl who had walked up to them. "Ah i see we have ourselves a ranger, we dont see many of you around, guns are expensive, and those look like some pretty good ones at that, where did you come up with the kind of money? Never mind, that's not my business. What is your name? I feel like I've seen you somewhere before?" He thought he remembered seeing her face amongst the nobles, at a recent party in the royal palace. It couldn't be though, he was probably imagining it.

Sigfried had been staring into the fire when the mages voice broke his thought train. Looking at the source, he briefly considered it. With a soft hmm he thought over his current situation. 11 years and never since his first entrance had he ever traveled with a group, but perhaps it was time for a change. The challenge of tackling a walking suit of armor is what prompted him to agree, as he found the idea intriguing. Might meet stronger monsters in a group, leaning down he lifted his black helm and tugged it over his head.

Standing, his armor clanked and clamored as the plates rubbed over each other. Moving with his consistent thudding of his mailed boots; He entered the portal and spoke normally “I don’t want treasure, or this kingship. Assuming that time comes, I wish that we vote amongst ourselves who is the best suited for the weight of the crown. What I want is glory and a challenge. I overheard what you are going to face, and I am eager to face this walking suit of tin.” He meant the end as more of a joke

Realizing he forgot his introduction, he bowed his helmed head to them for a second “I am Sigfried Ausstadt, eleven year veteran of this maze”

Clarissa looked at him, "I'm not just a little girl with a gun, I built them myself. I know mechanics and sciences better then I know..well" she was about to say the proprieties of being a noble but stopped herself. She sighed when he asked about her. "I'm afraid you have seen me before, I am one of the many noble ladies they try to dress up as a poodle and marry off to a knight twice our age. Please, I'm reminded of it everyday at home, Clarissa is my name and all I want to be known as". It was clear she had no taste for nobility. "I'm not much of a fighter, but I can break almost anything down and rebuild it, and I'm sure there's lots of gates and locks in here". It wasn't that she was too soft to learn fighting, her father would notice bruises and a limp when she walked as she trained, it was easier to wash off powder and dirt, though she had come close to a new face when she sneezed near gun powder, luckily the king's scientist was there with sand.

He watched the people talk and introduce themselves. So many titles... "I'm Shift. *just* Shift. I'm proficient with anything I need to be proficient with, and I don't know much magic, unfortunatly, but what I do know, is basically lightning." he looked down at the mention of his lack of knowledge of magic, to the rune he held in his hand. The same rune as the was right on the teleporter. He had a few of those in his pack.

"Good know we've all been introduced. So if you're ready let's head into the maze. The armor is in the second level of the labyrinth." Rhev held out his hand, holding the rune up to the stone. He closed his eyes and focused his mana into the stone. The stone began to glow brightly and enveloped them. A second later they were standing in a dark, dimly lit stone hallway. The floor was covered with small ferns and moss. In an occasional crack in the stones, a plant rose up, glowing faintly blue. This was the place Rhev had tracked the Walking armor to. He put the stone back into his pack, and turned around to face every one. "Lets move."

They walked together for a while, the moss squishing under their feet. It was getting misty, and a small fog started seeping in the further they walked. The hallway they were in expanded bigger and bigger. There were several yards in between each wall. A sort of humming sound started to fill the air, no it was more like a soft roaring. Before he could continue his train of though was interrupted by a sharp screech in front of them. A group of armored lizard men was charging them, they each held some sort of weapon in their hands.

"What?" Rhev exclaimed reaching back to grab the his spear. "How are.. they've never been this organized. They flanked us completely."
The lizard men had formed a circle around the group.

She looked at the lizard men and pulled her sword out she turned her back to her party making sure that was covered. She readied herself for the fight against the creatures. When they charged she dug in her heals and raised her sword taking the first hit from one of them behind her. She pushed back against the lizards ax and swept her sword upward. She was planning on beheading the creature before they had too much time to retaliate. She looked at it again they were organized but not as skilled as she was. She moved her blade across in one sweeping movement lobbing off the head of one of the beasts.
