a character in “The Land Of Bedlam”, as played by MartinVole

Name: Hayden Addler
Age: 30
Height: 6ft 2in
Gender: Male
Occupation: Alchemist

A tall wisp of a man, he appears rather physically underwhelming. His complexion is a ghostly white, and his hair, messy and grayed to silver at an early age. The look in his eyes are always tired, yet a lovely blue-green in color. He is is barely seen out of his white coat and black tie, black pants and shoes, often shown to fairly haphazardly thrown on.

Equipment: A full assortment of flasks, tubes, book, and other items needed for a fully functional laboratory
Armor: None
Powers/Magic: None known

A man with an obsession with the preservation and value of life. He is duty-bound as a healer, no matter what it means to care for his patients, as well as what may result of his research. He believes his work is for the greater good, an instrument for something greater than himself, and shows a near unwavering bond with his experiments. While weak in body, his convictions aren't to be underestimated, nor his ingenuity and madness.
Flaws: Not very athletic and tires out rather fast, empathetic, gullible

Skills/Strengths: Highly intelligent, highly skilled physician, near unbreakable in his convictions, has intricate knowledge of chemical, arcane, and living elements

Growing up in the household of a wealthy lordship, he had access to the luxuries of an advanced education. While the intent was for him to one day succeed his father, his hunger for knowledge pushed him deeper and deeper into the field of medicine. He wanted to treat the wounded and heal the sick. It was a lucrative pursuit, one his father could only encourage. Still in his teen years he had already began practicing, with growing success.

The crux of his drive was his ailing younger sister who was always bedridden. Despite money and power, his family could find neither medicine nor healer that could cure her. In silent desperation he sought to make a cure himself, delving secretly into the study of the arcane. In the nights when all slept, he worked his alchemy. He distilled latent magic from the remains of the slain unknown, and made from it a dark elixir. He tested it on a dead animal, finding it had a rejuvenating property as the animal's body went into convulsions and drew breath once again. Truly he felt this was the way he'd save his sister.

On another quiet night, as her condition had grown its most grim, he went to her, and with a few drops of his elixir, he would see the fruit of his labors. After a moment she convulsed just as the animal did, but then... silence. Driven to maddened despair by his failure, he fled away from everything, to seclude himself, to try to discover what went wrong, or rather, to create a condition where no one else would have to experience the despair he endured.

He would eventually begin researching the monsters of the wilds, to find what went wrong. He was eventually found during a hunt, having been wounded by a beast, looking more like a wild man than an esteemed upperclassman. In custody, it took little effort to get him to cooperate, in his absence from society he had began expanding his research, even having made a shoddily crafted lab and cabin in the wilderness, despite the constant threats. He was given an opportunity to continue his work under a funded laboratory, under watch, of course.

"People see a world of monsters, things that rend and tear without reason, but how many monsters could there be, truly? Should we destroy them all without ever understanding? If not all people are good, then truly, I say, not all monsters are... well, monsters." -Hayden Addler
