Setting
For many, it had nothing to do with luck, but unluck. Many couldnât take the heavy losses they had. Losing every little thing that they had, and even their hole families, mass suicides were commited. The military tried rescuing as much people as possible, but they eventually stopped all searches. The ones who didnât killed themselves, or werenât rescued by the military, try desperately to reach the quarantine area on their own, in hopes the military might take them in.
Casper, a young man, is on top of a high building observing the horizon. Not one of the biggest buildings of the city, but it was still pretty big. He stared at the lights of the quarantine area, his eyes fixated on it, his hole body paralyzed. Most would think this was irrational fear, but no. He was clearly thinking of a way of getting there.
His thinking however was interrupted by the people that were with him. David and Anna, were discussing, swearing at each other. Apparently they disagreed about the plan Casper was doing.
âYou crazy bitch! You can go for all I care! Iâm not leaving this roof!â
âStaying here is not good. Canât you see the obvious? Are you so desperate that itâs clouding your judgement?â
David was an ok guy. He was tall and pretty strong, used to be a constructor worker before all this. Pretty strong physically, he was pretty weak mentally, and very cowardly. He could get panicked easily, and in situations that such occurred, he was likely to behave like he was now. He protects his friends, but donât think twice on letting others die. However, to be considered a friend of his, was a considerable task. In the moment, Casper and Anna were nothing more as other people, he couldnât care less.
Anna however, was a pretty sweet girl. Mostly she is very caring, and even in a situation such as this, she is very compassionate
of others. She is very innocent, a problem most people exploit, for their own good. A good follower, but a bad leader, as she often canât handle pressure, and being blamed by wrong decisions. Unlike Casper, she was pretty innocent and rely on her emotions more than anything.
âJust stop both of you!â
The girl that interrupted their arguments was Kaitlyn. All Casper knew about her was that she was a park ranger months before the initial outbreak, and that she was good with a bow. She seemed to be very passionate as similar to Anna, but instead of being mostly calm, and submissive, Kate seemed to be the type of women who takes a leadership role. She is very good at controlling people, a perk Casper clearly lacked.
They met when they were all separately running from the infected. Casper met with Anna and shortly after, Kate and David. Pinned down by the infected banging at the door, Casper managed to think of an exit plan, taking them all out of there unscathed. While of course, relying on Kateâs talent with a bow, in order to take most infected silently, and David, by using a hammer they had found.
Casper was suddenly distracted by a noise of a crash. He turned forward and stared down into the street. A car had crashed into a post. The sound made countless infected run from out of the buildings, and shortly after, the infected that were following the car by itâs sound came to. By a closer examination of the scene Casper managed to pinpoint that it was a family of four. A man and a woman, plus their two children (probably), who were twin girls.
âWe gotta help them!â said Anna.
âFuck those stupid pieces of shit! Iâm not going down there!!â said David waving his arms around in protest.
âAnnaâs right, we gotta do something!! Before theyâŠâ said Kate before being abruptly interrupted by Casper.
âNo. They are valuable baits.â
Anna simply frowned, while Kaitlynâs face showed signs of anger.
âJust look at it. The infected from all buildings are going in there to eat them. It wil open a gap for us, making it easier to pass through this area undetected.â
âHow can you be so cold!!?â said Kaitlyn, trying to keep her voice down, as her eyes gazed on Casper, her fury pouring in him.
Casper, however, didnât flinch.
âI know how you fell. But the world we live in now, is a world where only the strongest and smartest survive. If we go in there and help them, we die as well. Shouldnât we honour their deaths, by simply making out of here alive?â
Kaitlyn couldnât argue with that. As much as she didnât liked what she heard, she had no intention of dying.
The voice of the girls screaming in panic as the infected broke the windowns, and dragged them out, made their father panicked. As he opened the door to get out, grabbing his pistol, an infected bit his leg, and other threw him on the ground. His screams of agony mixed with his daughters, who were being ripped and eaten alive, made the woman simply stay there paralyzed until one of them grabbed her, and pushed her out of the vehicle, ripping her apart, her blood splattering into the street, car and walls.
Anna tried to recompose herself as she sobbed. Kate couldnât help but feel anger torwards the situation. David remained there, emotionless, and Casper moved torwards the door.
âThe infected that swarmed this building are probably down there, with the rest of the mob. We are clear. Letâs make it fast. Stick to the plan.â
âWe are going to resort to this brat now?â said David.
âThis brat saved your ass back then.â Casper replied.
David spitted on the ground, grabbed his hammer and walked torwards Casper, bumping on his shoulder purposedly when passing him. Casper looked behind, both Kaitlyn and Anna coming afterwards. Casper stared at the moon. That was it. No going back. They would either make it⊠or die.
