Description

Physical Description: Mortimer is long and lean. He wears a light brown trenchcoat and black dress pants and shoes, and a white dress shirt and sweater vest, accompanied by bowties that vary, depending on the day, and the mood he’s in when he chooses the tie. He has long black hair, all combed back revealing a moderate widow’s peak.

Personality: Perhaps the least disciplined adult on campus, but not the least proficient in his line of magic. He is rather eccentric, but he most certainly lets kids be kids, and (luckily) tends not to give out homework unless it’s asked for…

Equipment:

A four-band jade and gold puzzle ring, with a brilliant blue sapphire inlaid: This provides him hours upon hours of entertainment, and, with its enchantments, allow him to heal the minor burns that are so easy to get in his class.

A Jeweler’s Occulus: Allows him to more easily identify materials, without having to touch, lift, knock on, smell, and sometimes even taste them in order to figure out what they are. Although depending on the impurities or outright ambiguity of it, he might need to go through a bit of these steps even after observing them.

Ornate Steel Wand: This doesn’t do much, he usually casts spells with his hands, however, with the small knowledge he has of the other magics, he’s able to create a small candle flame at the end, for seeing in the dark, lighting hesitant Bunsen burners, or messing around with flammable materials…
Trench coat: Full of pockets, used for quick, easy, hard-to-detect storage.

2 potions of general harm: In cheap, breakable bottles built for throwing. These sting like crazy, and burn flesh.

1 potion of healing: It heals whatever it touches, but swiftly evaporates after doing so.

A Storage watch: It’s a shiny watch he wears on his right wrist which doesn’t seem to work. He carries a relatively tiny bottle (carries one pipette full) of antivenom.

Abilities:

Magic Missile: Every mage has one, to a degree, don’t they? With his alchemical abilities, he is able to create non-exploding bolts of various elements, not the four silly fire, earth, and other such things, but with the 180-something elements. The problem is, highly toxic elements are exhausting to summon, (and not permitted to be cast as missiles on campus, outside of absolutely horrible emergencies, I’d assume…) and missiles and/or streams of certain elements don’t become harmful until he gets another element mixed in. I.E., he would hit a monster covered with water with some calcium and sodium bolts, or with a stream of these elements, which would potentially cause a harsh explosion. Sodium attacks are particularly powerful against giant snails… In most cases though, since the primary damage here focuses on buildup, he’s much better off hurling a toxic potion at the enemy.

Alchemical Change: With the right chemicals and rituals, he can change one material into something comprised of entirely different materials. Classic alchemy. This doesn’t always work, and it doesn’t always come out as the intended material, but with the great skill he has, there’s a reasonable chance he might pull it off… Give or take a few percentage points given a circumstance…

Alchemical Siphoning: Can siphon a certain element out of a material, within reason. For years, he’s used this to take iron from the blood out of dead animals in slaughterhouses, enough for him to create an ingot, which he now uses as a paperweight on his desk.

Alchemical Shaping: Allows him to put these elements into different shapes without dangerously melting them and tediously carving them. This can only be done square inch by square inch or less, lest impurities or bubbles form in the material.

History: Maury was born on the streets all of 27 years ago to illegitimate parents. Despite the obvious predicament of being quite poor, and frowned upon as an illigitimate child, he worked odd jobs and such to earn his meals, and at the age of 7, began working as the town alchemist's apprentice. He thought the world of his master, learning all he could about the fine art that was potionmaking, and the amazing magic that was alchemy, until, at the age of 18, he was given the business upon the alchemist's death, where he proceeded to grow in proficiency through his own experiments. When the village no longer needed an alchemist, for a trade route had been built for them to get their resources from, the somewhat reclusive Mortimer, at the age of 20, took a job at the Liminal Academy and never looked back. He teaches to this day, hoping to change the lives of students as his own Alchemy teacher changed his.

Class(es): Potionmaking, General Alchemy. (Although that could just be one class…)

Rumors: As the more immature students would have you believe, Mortimer is both an idiot and a psychopath. Around town, he’s generally known as a well-meaning awkward professor from the academy, and regarded with some esteem. But there’s always one or two crazy people in the corner of a tavern claiming he’s a devil from hell, a murderer, or (the favorite among these people) a monkey-torturer.

So begins...

Mortimer stumbles out of his workshop, locking three of the six locks on the front door. Security first! he lives outside a mine for pete's sake!... Mmmm... Sake... perhaps he should have some after school? No. The people for responsible teachers or whoever they were would have him do no such thing. Oh, right security! Mortimer, with Alchemical Shaping, welds the door shut. No use letting the cold in anyway... After several minutes, Mortimer decides that he shouldn't seal the whole thing shut.... He'd have to spend hours undoing it! So he leaves it welded a bit on the leftmost side where it opens from, and on the top and bottom left corners. Admiring his handiwork, Mortimer sighs.... Oh fiddlesticks! The antipoison for class!

Maury un-welds as fast as he can, then re-welds it, realizing it would take too long, and crawls into the window he left open. Falling forward and hitting the floor of his house, he runs to the kitchen, and scavenges his chemistry set for the antipoison.... It's not there!

Hm, maybe he put it on his bedside table? Mortimer sprints to his bedroom, not finding it on the bedside table, he realizes he forgot to put on his tie today. Hurriedly he ties the "'Frantic Monday" tie about his neck, and remembers where he put the antipoison!

He had artfully carved out a square-shaped hole in several hundred pages of the dictionary in order to store potions in it, and so he turned to the B section, withdrew the antipoison, climbed out of his window, and closed it. Now to hail a cab to get to the academ-

He had left his wallet in his other pants! Mortimer spent several more minutes borrowing a ladder to climb down the chimney into his house, he changed into new clothes, cleaned himself up, and then suddenly noticed the door to the academy in his workshop.

A few minutes more, and Mortimer finally stumbled into the Blue Room...

"Sorry I'm late. I had a dreadful morning!"

"All who seek the light shall find it."

Luthien's lips quirked into a wry half-smile -- there was no doubt that he knew the other half of that particular catch-phrase. Whatever comment he might have made was interrupted by Mortimer's arrival, however.

He waved one of his hands, flicking his fingers outward -- a graceful gesture of dismissal.

"No matter, Professor Whippet. There are a few more students to be expected, but in the meantime, does anyone have any issues or questions that they wish to raise?"

"Oh, I don't think so." says Mortimer, "Other than what I think we've discussed earlier... Don't worry, I brought the antipoison!"

He draws the hard-found bottle from his coat.

"But I've been thinking, what if the students aren't morally inclined to do this? Could I still give them an A if they just make a potion with the effects they wanted?"

Luthien's face took on a slightly pained expression, and he raised two fingers to his forehead, as if in hopes of fending off an impending headache.

"Professor Whippet... while I make a point of not interfering with anyone's classes, I would be much obliged if you do not fail any of your students for a lack of lethal intent."

He sighed, and shook his head slightly. "You know that I was reluctant to permit such a... demonstration... in the first place. If her schedule allows, I would appreciate it if Professor Zandras were present, just in case of any... mishaps... with the antidote."

He then turned his attention to Katherine. "Now, Professor, a certain degree of... exploration of their environment... is only to be expected." He smiled slightly as he spoke, then continued in a somewhat more serious tone, "I do not believe that any of these children are capable of breaching my wards, to end up where they truly should not be."

"Oh, professor Zandras? I don't believe we've met." He turns to Ms. Zandras, "Have we? I think I would remember you, but, you know how potion fumes can be!"

Milhera looks up at Katherine. "What seems to be the problem Professor Clarice? I can take care of it now." She walks over to Katherine muttering a few pain-killer spells over her. When she is finally satisfied with her work. she sits back in her old chair again. "That should be enough for you until after the meeting."

When she look at the illusion she smiled. "This is an interesting group of students. I'm excited to see how this all works out."

Milhera laughs at Mr. Whippet. "I have met you before. I am around quite often."

"Haha, she does a better job of being around then Luthien, at least." Atir stated, with a chuckle.

"This is an interesting group of students. I'm excited to see how this all works out." Milhera said, to which Atir nodded enthusiastically.

"I agree. They look as if they'd make wonderful playthings." He said.

Mortimer abruptly stops leaning back in his chair.

"Luthien, would you refresh my memory... Did I bring the ingredients for today's class to my classroom last night? The strenuous work I did on the antipoison before I finished and went to sleep has consumed my memory."

"I'd hope some of them got annoyed enough to actually kill me... Gonna have to step up my game, then."

"Professor Farouz," said Luthien, with just a slight emphasis on the title, "Your... game... is quite sufficient as it stands."

Mortimer then spoke up, and Luthien turned his attention to him. "You did indeed have a variety of... substances... with you in the classroom when we spoke. I daresay that was them?"

Maury considers it for a few seconds, and then realizes they might not be the right ones...

"did they happen to include kegs marked with a symbol like this?" Maury draws a strange curleycue in the air, no doubt some sort of alchemical symbol.

"Not that I noticed," says Luthien, seeming unconcerned. "You do recall that classes don't start until tomorrow -- and possibly not even then, for you, depending on how the scheduling works out?"

"As usual, I'll be introducing everyone at lunch -- so please be prompt -- and giving a brief overview of your classes. Students will then have until dinner to sign up, and I'll be sorting out the schedule after that."

"Ha ha, come on, you guys complain about me, but look at Maury! He doesn't even remember when his class will be." Atir said, with a laugh.

"But, I don't actually remember our ruling. Who is running the detention center this year? I'm assuming a bunch of Candles will be stuck there this year."

Several more students introduced themselves, before Luthien nodded in acknowledgement.

"Thank you all. Now, if the instructors would kindly introduce themselves, and say a few words about the class or classes that they teach." Luthien gestured to the table immediately behind him, where the instructors were seated.

A dark-skinned, darker-haired woman stood up. She was dressed in a white ruffled shirt and long pants, affecting a style more common to men, in Alyria. She wore a rapier and a dagger at her right and left hip, respectively, and moved with an unselfconscious ease, clearly accustomed to being armed.

"I'm Maya de Mendici, or Instructor Mendici to you lot." Unlike the other Mendici, her accent was pure Shadowtown. She also bore no physical resemblance to him, appearing to be of mixed Millennial Islander and Alyrian descent.

"For you first-years, I teach Self Defense. Y'got the option of taking my class, or taking one of Instructor Zhao's. He'll teach you how to fight. Me, I get to teach those of you who can't or won't learn to fight. Fortunately for you, children, I enjoy a challenge." She grinned, toothily. "Again, it's him or me -- you don't get to bow out. So I look forward t'seeing some of you in class tomorrow."

She sat down again, still smiling her slightly predatory smile.

A man, young and in his prime, stood up next. He appeared to be older than any of the students, which would only mean one thing : he was the teacher. Well, among the youngest of the teachers, undoubtedly.

This was the famed Tristan Rephaim, a necromancy teacher of renown. For those who lived in Aeolia, his name could be faintly remembered on the news' headlines. For those who lived in Shadowtown, it was more than likely that they probably had seen his face during a soup kitchen or the like. And for those who descended from places of politics and adventurers, he was known as the Bane of Estra, the old empire.

At a glance, it was hard to say that he even knew Necromancy. Most of those who taught the controversial subject were men and women in their middle age, experienced and learned professors who sought eternal life. As for Tristan here...he was a child in comparison with the stereotype. His movements were casual and relaxed, but his face showed bitterness.

"...students, I'll get straight into it. For those who do know me, please wait quietly. For those who don't know me, I'll go over a brief synopsis of myself.

I am Tristan Rephaim, your Necromancy teacher. I will teach you how to re-possess the dead, if you're into that sort of macabre hobby. If you are taking this class to get into crime-related occupations, I will teach you how to communicate with the spirits of the dead. If you are using this class as a filler, then I'll teach you how to preserve corpses and thralls. I doubt anyone wants to really be a mortician, but niches do need filling. I cannot hope you will become a niche-filler. In fact, I expect that at least half of you will find no profit in this branch of magic. For those who come into this class with their heads held high, you will have your ambition rent to shreds. For those who come into this class without self-confidence, not even a single rat will obey your words. If you come into this class hoping to learn laughs, then take Illusion. This is not an empty threat, but if you cannot control yourself around the dead, the dead will not control themselves around you.

I am NOT your friend, I am NOT someone you should be friendly with. I will treat you with respect if you will give me that same respect. Do the same with your partners, unless you want me to personally see you to becoming a mortician. The only time you should speak with me is if it concerns about necromancy or vitaemancy, whether you want to apply your own principles or if you need review on a principle. I will not help you re-possess a thrall, I will not do any ritual for or with you without good reason and pay.

If you're interested, you can advance onto vitaemancy. A great deal harder, and it pertains not to the un-death, but to the concept of living. Unlike the deal with the monkey you saw earlier, you DO get to bow out of my class, as necromancers are hated in these parts and widely around the world. I will respect your want to live if you do not want to formally take my class.

And if you came here to kill me, it's a waste of your and my time."

He sits down, and takes a glance around the room.
