Peridot collapsed onto her bed, dropping her single suitcase on the floor where it landed with a dull thud. She lay for a minute, starring up at the blue canopy that hung above her bed. Eventually she sighed and stood up, searching the room for window. She found one, it's brass latch tarnished and it's window panes already beginning to fog up. She lifted the latch and swung the window open, leaning out to smell the crisp fresh air. She pulled her jacked off, the cold air swirling around her now bare arms, she shivered and put a few steps between her and the window.

She began unpacking, a small wardrobe to the left of her bed more than fit her clothing. An empty, leather bound journal and her hair brush went into the night stand drawer. Closing her suitcase she shoved it under her bed and sat back down on her bed. She had nothing to do, in this empty room. She thought about beginning her journal, her step-father had suggested she write in it. She opened the drawer but decided against it, closing it once more.

Peridot turned the brass handle and pulled the solid wooden door open. She peered out, looking up and down the hallway beyond, before stepping out. She twisted the bracelet on her left wrist subconsiously as she walked down the hall toward the staircase. Her brown, ankle boots clicked loudly in the emptiness. When she did reach the stairs, she grabbed the railing and peered over, before turning and beginning the walk back to her room.

Topaz

"Room 218. Peridot Zircon." Topaz said lightly to herself, taking the keys, "I have no questions, thank you for your service," she said, bowing respectfully again. She smiled slightly before walking away, her heels clicking on the floor once more.

Soon she made her way up the stairs towards the rooms of the House of Sunlight, inevitably making it to her room. She opened the door, to reveal the rather archaic seeming room that was within. She gave a small smile and nod of the head respectfully to her roommate before promptly unpacking her things, various clothes, pieces of jewelry, and antiques that she used were what primarily took up the space of her bags.

Once she was done she took a seat on the bed, the mattress sagging slightly, a tad bit to her dismay. It seemed as though the living conditions of the school weren't quite what she was used to, and she definitely didn't expect the rooms to be this run down for a school that appeared so extravagant.

She sighed before smiling at her roommate again, "Topaz Montgomery, and I'm assuming you're Peridot Zircon?" She inquired politely.

Peridot had slipped quietly back into her room and was sitting at her desk with her journal open, and empty, in front of her. She heard the door creak and turned to see, what she could only assume was, her room mate entering. At the girl's nod she simply turned back to the yellowed pages before her.

Peridot heard some rustling behind her, probably her roommate unpacking, and then the other girl spoke up. "Topaz Montgomery, and I'm assuming you're Peridot Zircon?" Peridot sighed and nodded. Inspiration finally hit her and she dipped her pen and began scribbling in her journal.

Topaz Montgomery (Roommate)
-Talks too much.

Topaz

Topaz gave a small smile to her roommate, who nodded when asked if she was the Peridot Zircon she was to be acquainted with, she assumed that making a bond with this girl would be a bit more...difficult, although it was rather difficult for Topaz to bond with anyone really...for some reason people just didn't seem to enjoy her company all that much.

She glanced over at her roommate, who seemed to be too focused on writing in her journal to chat with her. The room was silent and Topaz lazily watched dust particles float gently in the room. She was rather bored, her mind drifting from one topic to the next, until it finally settled on one, "Why isn't Peridot talking?" She began thinking, obviously the answer appeared to be quite clear, but Topaz always knew that not everything had to be so simple. I mean, perhaps she was simply too busy writing in her journal, or perhaps she just didn't like talking, or didn't like her for that matter.

But it would be wrong of her to deny all other possible explanations just because there were more "realistic" ones. Besides, Topaz took the term realistic lightly, they lived in a world full of magic after all. Perhaps she took an oath of silence. Maybe she was traumatized and didn't speak afterwards...she had heard of cases like that. Maybe she was sworn into secrecy as a part of some cult initiation and she was scared she'd blurt out the truth to her. Maybe she had cut off her tongue!

After that thought Topaz's mind was thoroughly invested in the thought of what would occur if one were to cut off their own tongue. Her mind raced through the possibilities, for one, they wouldn't be able to talk, which makes it a possibility for why Peridot wasn't speaking, but more so, she assumed one who did that would already be dead after committing the act, as they'd probably end up choking on the blood that came out of their severed tongue.

She smiled again, this time her smile much wider than it was once before. She made her way to one of her trunks, painted a ivory white with gold plating, she opened the trunk up, rummaging through it to reveal her scissors that she had grown to love very much so. Once she retrieved them she, in what seemed to be one swift motion without any deliberation, casually snipped off her tongue, which plopped onto the ground soon afterwards. She laughed slightly, facing her head down so she wouldn't choke on her blood, watching as the blood poured from her mouth onto the ground. She could feel her tongue beginning to heal itself already, as such she'd unfortunately be unable to test out all the hindrances a severed tongue causes, she laughed again, this time a bit louder, enjoying herself despite the fact she wouldn't be able to test everything out. At least she knew that it was possible to not choke on your blood after cutting off your tongue.

Peridot sat with her back firmly turned to her roommate. She doodled idly on the edges of her journal, making swirls until the ink on her pen was worn off and the swirls were only slight scratches on the surface of the page. Topaz's laugh made her freeze. Her peaceful silence broken, she added a second point:

-Laughs too much.

When Topaz continued to laugh, getting louder and louder, Peridot twisted around in her chair. "Would you be-" she growled, but cut herself off with a scream. Blood was dripping from the girl's mouth, and once she follow the steady stream of drops, to a piece of pink flesh that lay on the wooden floor, she screamed again. The pen dropped from her hand, landing with a clank on the floor and splashing her shoes and the chair legs with the ink that was too far up the shaft to be useful.

"What is wrong with you?" she managed to rasp out, her mouth suddenly dry and sticky.

Topaz

The girl seemed to have had such a rough exterior to her earlier on but apparently now just some blood reduced her to horrified screams, it was interesting really, to see what fear brought one to. She laughed, some blood spurting out of her mouth as she let out the hard laugh. The girl had dropped her pen, ink bursting out of it, she began to speak, although most of what she said probably wouldn't make sense as one required their tongue to speak, "Ink stains are rather difficult to wash out..." Topaz said, still soft spoken, "You should really be more careful," she said, her head turning slightly in a puzzled manner. What she said was highly hypocritical..."You can use some of my cleaning utensils once I'm done with them," she said, beginning to cough up more blood, she decided it'd be best to continue looking down rather than at her roommate, "One can very well choke on their own blood if they're not careful..." Topaz mumbled to herself silently.

"What is wrong with you?"

She smiled slightly at the question, opening her mouth once more to let some blood trickle through. Was it really wrong to have such an inquisitive nature? To test out the things you did not know rather than to simply assume they are true? She supposed seeing as Peridot didn't know the whole story, nor that she could regenerate and heal herself passively, that it would make sense to be rather scared and confused in the situation she was in.

"Well for one, I'm missing part of my tongue," she said in response to Peridot, her tongue almost fully regenerated, making what she was saying obvious without one having to pay much close attention to her. She decided not to speak in the third person, deciding Peridot had gone through enough of her oddities for one day.

Topaz continued to laugh, although once her tongue was fully regenerated and the bleeding was over, she stopped. Standing up formally once more before turning to Peridot. "Sorry for the scare," she said with a slight laugh, "I was just testing would would occur to someone if their tongue had been severed...but I'm all better now," she said, revealing her to have a new tongue. Her mouth and dress had been stained with blood, and she made a mental note to clean herself up before going outside.

She picked up her severed appendage and put it in a small velvet bag, thinking she may do something with it, before taking out her cleaning utensils, contemplating whether or not she should clean the floor of the stains...they could keep them as memories of their first day as roommates. "I apologize again for any trouble I may have caused you," Topaz said with a slight smile, getting to work on cleaning it, deciding that Peridot may not want to remember this day.

Peridot watched in horror as the girl explained that she had cut off her tongue, just to see what would happen, and then stuck it out to demonstrate that it was, in fact, 'all better now'.

Now she was cleaning the blood off the floor, and Peridot couldn't help but wonder what she had gotten herself into. Her step-father had made it sound like she would be learning how to light something on fire with just a thought, or levitate objects at will. That she could handle, but the way this girl casually snipped her tongue off, it made her stomach churn.

Standing up, and using the back of the chair as a support, Peridot didn't even bother to close her journal, as she made her way unsteadily to the other side of the room. She stayed as far away from the girl as she could, her legs pressed against her bed as she walked past. She pushed aside the curtain to her clothing area and sank down onto the floor, legs stretched out in front of her, her back against the wall and the curtain brushing against her arm as it swung back into place.

Peridot took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to compose herself. She subconsciously grasped the bracelet on her left wrist and transferred it to her right, then back again. Finally she opened her eyes and stood up, stepping back into the main room.

"Topaz," She began, staring pointedly at the far wall. "I have to ask you never to do that again." Then she sat down on her bed and waited for the girl's reply. She usually didn't like it when people talked to her when it wasn't necessary. However she needed to know that this girl was just like everyone else, and she could hate her for the reason's she hated everyone else. She would forget this incident and it wouldn't effect their relationship at all.

"Come on, let's go. If someone's in trouble we should try and help them and also it could be an adventure!" Allyse said looking in the direction of the scream as if she could see what was happening.

"Let's go, let's go, let's go!" She chanted as she began to walk down towards the great hall and walking back up the opposite stairs to the first balcony, not looking back to see if the other girls had followed her.

Walking down the corridor she glanced at the doors until she found 218, spotting a silver haired girl with her back to her, knocking at random doors, probably also drawn to the scream as well.

"I think it came from this room!" Allyse yelled at the girl so that she might be able to hear her, she turned back and have the door a firm knock. "Hello! No ones dead in there right?!" She yelled through the door, slightly concerned as she thought she had gotten away from all the death when she left shadowtown...

She froze for a second as nobody answered the door. Knocking on it again she noticed it to he soild wood and dry...

"Well no ones answering," she paused stating the obvious while looking back at the little group that surrounded the door. "Do you think it will be a problem if I burn down the door?" She asked innocently before giving the door a swift kick.

She wasnt one for patience and if someone was in trouble and couldn't get to the door than they needed to get in there now.

"Hay, if someone doesn't give me an answer im going to have to burn this door down to make sure everythings okay!" She yelled through the door again, giving it a few more firm knocks.

She really had no intention of burning the door but she wouldn't back down from her word if no one answered, she learned quickly on the streets that you act now or someone gets hurt... But than again this wasnt shadowtown.

April lifted a hand at the burning threat.

"There's no need for that," she said, a bit briskly. "Personally I think we should leave them to their own devices. But if you insist"

She pulled a pin out of her hair and walked to the door, where she began fiddling with the lock. After a few seconds she heard a satisfying click. She motioned towards the door, replacing the pin. "Now, if you insist on barging into someone's room, the door should be unlocked."

"Thanks April!" Allyse grinned as she opened the door, "Sorry for barging in but..." Se trailed off as she saw two girls sat in the room, one was sat at a desk and the other was standing but that's not what really caught her attention, completely covering the one girls body was blood.
It seemed to have started from her mouth and had poured out as it stained her clothing and some of the floor, laying on the floor was a piece of ripped of flesh, a pink muscle that really should of been attached to someone's mouth.
Glancing at both girls, they appeared to be calm and the girl at the desk had turned back around while the other stood there grinning manically, all tongues in tack and accounted for...
Quickly back tracking out of the room, Allyse shut the door and turned to the group. "Well that was fun, but I really think we should leave them alone..." She shuddered slightly at all the blood that had been in the room, how pleasent. "Seems the girl screamed because of something her room mate did... That might of involved a missing tongue or two... But don't worry! I checked and they all had their tongues... Is it just me or is that really weird..." She trailed off, already moving on from the gore and now just wondering about who tongue was on the floor.
"Guess it's time for my inspector hat, we need to find a person in this school who doesn't have a tongue!" She cried, looking at all the people around her to agree so that they may begin their quest for the person without a tongue.

Cecil, who had stopped knocking and was quietly following the other girls, peeked over the many shoulders and bobbing heads to see the same sight as before : a blood-stained girl who was grinning straight at another, who seemed to be backed up far away from her roommate. The latter seemed relatively clean, and the former's tongue was well intact.

Then what was a piece of muscle doing on the floor...?

"...um...is there anything alright in there, madams?" Cecil spoke over the other girls.

Phoebe wasn't able to see into the room past the group of people that had amassed. The small hallway was crowded with people and she was beginning to get uncomfortable. After Allyse's outburst about searching for someone with a missing tongue, Phoebe decided she'd had enough adventure for one night, perhaps for a lifetime.

She excused herself to those that heard her from the rest of the group, "I'm glad everyone is alright, but I still have some unpacking to do." This was a lie, she hadn't brought anything that needed to be unpacked, but she also didn't want to be rude and just leave.

She nodded a farewell to Alina and meandered down the hallway, if only to find her way to the Main Hall.

Date: Tuesday, December 31st
Time: Noon

At noon, a bell began to ring. Those who took note would hear twelve distinct clanging peals, not precisely melodic, but not excessively clamorous, either. Certainly the bell was loud enough to be heard throughout the Academy.

Throughout the balconies of the student rooms, older students called "Lunch, firsties! Come to lunch!" There was good-natured laughter as they led the way, down the various stairs and through the nearest of the two doorways leading inward from the Great Hall.

Those in the left hallway took the first right, while those in the right hallway took the first left, and they all met in the middle, where another double door stood open.

The Dining Hall was a large room, longer than it was wide, with four pairs of narrow parallel tables down its length, and one perpendicular to them at the far end. As the students entered, the Chatelaine directed them: "Suns to the left, Candles to the right. First-years to the back two tables and please be seated. Suns to the left, Candles to the right--"

Luthien de Mendici, headmaster of the Liminal Academy, stood in front of the final table, the one that was perpendicular to the others. He was facing the two closest parallel tables, and equidistant from them both. When all of the first-years were seated at these two tables, Luthien looked the gathered students over, smiling slightly, his gold eyes gleaming with a warm light.

"Welcome," he said, his voice clear and precise. He lacked either of the local accents, speaking with neither the abridged and slurred diction of Shadowtown, nor the particular enunciations and cadences of Aeolia. "I am very pleased to welcome you all to the Liminal Academy."

"Though I have met most of you but briefly, it is my impression that you all have great potential, which I hope to see blossom in your time here. I will shortly ask you to introduce yourselves to your new classmates and teachers, so that we may all begin to get to know each other. Before that, though, it is my duty to inform you of the rules of the Academy."

"Firstly," said Luthien, "Many of you carry weapons, either openly or concealed. I would be the last person to fault this practice, but you should know that attacking a fellow student with a deadly weapon is grounds for expulsion, regardless of any actual injury sustained. Likewise for magical assaults of any kind. There is, of course, an exception made for drills and sparring under the supervision of an instructor."

"Secondly, there are many doors to and from the Academy. However, you are not permitted to leave the Academy via any door but the one you entered by, except under the supervision of a teacher. If you came from Shadowtown, you may return there via the left-hand door from the Great Hall, and likewise those from Aeolia may return via the right... but in either case, you are not to enter the other city."

"Finally, I expect you all to respect and obey your instructors, as well as the other staff members of the Academy. Some of you in the House of Candles are unaccustomed to having adult authorities in your life, while some of you in the House of Sunlight are perhaps more accustomed to giving orders than to following them. Nonetheless, I expect you all to make an effort in this area."

"And now, if you would each stand up in turn and give your name, and perhaps say something about yourself, if you wish." Luthien smiled, and gestured to the first of the first-year students, inviting them to stand and introduce themselves.

The ringing of the noon bell interrupted any response Topaz was going to give, if she was even going to give one. On the eighth 'dong' Peridot stood up.

"I'll see you at lunch then," she said to her roommate before opening the door and leaving quickly. As she walked down the hall, crowded by other students, she tried to block the image of the severed tongue and blood stained mouth of her roommate.

Peridot made her way through the double doors, taking a seat at the very back of the left hand tables, as the Chatelaine had directed. She sat quietly through the Headmaster's speech, noting his peculiar lack of accent. She had lived in both Shadowtown and Aeolia, and had never met anyone who didn't have one accent or the other.

When the Headmaster brought attention the the subject of weaponry, Peridot, not for the first time, felt the loss of her dagger that she had always kept on her hip in Shadowtown. The worn leather handle had been too big for her slight hand, and the indents from the previous owner's grip had been too far apart. However it had been her father's, one of the last items her mother kept when she was forced to sell their home and most of their belongings. She had always kept the blade sharp and polished, until her step-father had insisted that a young lady had no use for such an object. She had made one last plea, before leaving for the academy, but her step-father still refused to give it back.

At the Headmaster's mention of the doors leading to and from the Academy, Peridot couldn't help but look at the one that led to Shadowtown, her old home. It would be so easy to slip through, leave this place. She could begin a new life, on the streets. She shook her head to clear away those thoughts. It had been so long since she was in Shadowtown, she had forgotten the layout, and with no money to start out with she wouldn't survive long. As much as she loathed to think it, Aeolia was her home now.

The Headmaster finished his speech and the room grew quiet. None of the first years seemed keen to be the first to introduce themselves. With a sigh Peridot decided it was best for her to go and get it out of the way. She stood, and turned to face the Headmaster.

"I am Peridot Zircon." Simple and concise, with no elaboration, she sat down again.

April

The red-head rolled her eyes at the curt introductions. She herself didn't want to give away much of herself, but still. Was this place just full of stuffy up-turned people who couldn't even be bothered to say what their favorite color was?

Internally frustrated, and with an act to uphold, April finally stood up, small bounce included in her step, and smiled widely, waving her fingers slightly. "Hi everyone! I'm April Summers. I'm from Shadowtown. I like flowers, and....well, any magic that any of you might have won't work on me. Nevertheless, I look forward to studying with all of you!"

Introduction finished, she sat down with a smile, hands folded on her lap. Bubbly personality established, as well as some sort of authority...now that was how you did an introduction.

Ellard

The red-haired girl spoke as confidently as he was nervous, and he could feel his knees shaking under the table. Public speaking was something he never cared for. Public anything in fact, was something he never cared for. He almost wished he had gone sooner, just said his name and be done with it like the others, but this girl, April, had set a new precedent.

Well, best to get it over with now, before people started adding more information. Shakily, Ellard stood up. "Um..." he started to say, starting to raise his hand and then realizing how foolish that was. Pulling his arm down, he looked about nervously before stammering out, "M-m-my...my n-name is...er...I m-mean...I'm...I'm Ellard...and...and, er...I...um...I..." he wasn't sure whether to add what his power was. If you could even call it that. What if the others tried to make him sneeze all the time?

"I...I like m-maps," he finally sputtered out, and hastily took his seat, ears violently red and the rest of his face starting to follow suit. He stared at his plate, hoping someone else would introduce themselves quickly.

Allyse jumped in surprise as she heard the bell rings, lunch time! The thought of all lost tongues gone from her mind she headed down towards the canteen.

Time for food! She thought as she found herself a seat and plopped herself down, making herself comfortable as she listened to the teachers speech and the rules he put forth. Allyse glanced towards the door that led to Aeolia, she was slightly put off at the idea of not being able to explore the city as she had never been able to get the before.

She watched as the girl in the room 218 gave a brief introduction of herself before sitting back down, next a young man came in late also gave a brief introduction before sitting down. Both introductions were a bit stiff and made Allyse a but anxious about the people she would be attending the academy with, though most seemed to be very nice.

Allyse smiled as she watched people introduce themselves, listening to April introduce herself confidently made her happy to have such a nice roommate. Next came Ellard, he stuttered out his name and a small piece of information about himself.

Well now that a few had said their names, Allyse jumped up, pulling up coal with her, who had been held in her hands all the time she had been running around the school, and grinned at everyone, "Names Allyse, Pyromancer and danser in my spare time! Let's be friends, Kay?!" She Finish before sitting back down as she turned to watch another student introduce themselves.
