"I'd hope some of them got annoyed enough to actually kill me... Gonna have to step up my game, then."

"Professor Farouz," said Luthien, with just a slight emphasis on the title, "Your... game... is quite sufficient as it stands."

Mortimer then spoke up, and Luthien turned his attention to him. "You did indeed have a variety of... substances... with you in the classroom when we spoke. I daresay that was them?"

Truly it was a fantastic melange of personalities on display, even more so their words and actions. A vast cornucopia that ran the gambit from the expected. The words that had been bandied about made sense only in the context of the larger picture to this false monk far from his southern island of Idun. Then again the shorn headed follower of Al-Jumi had never been accused of a great understanding of the topics of magic. Indeed the only reason he was officially here was because of the mask the others, fools they were, saw. He was a monk of the Order of Sun, monks in service of Al-Monj. Warriors,Clerics, and Knight-Paladins of the kingdom of Millennium Islands whose church and state were one and the same.

A tropical paradise the Millennium Islands were known for two things. Producing the finest ships and sailors and the largest collection of holy warriors. Their faith was their creed and law. And the man that was successfully playing the part of Jan Zhao carefully lived up to such things. For faith had given the monks and knight-paladins a reputation beyond normal men when it came to combat and righteous fury.

Though the funniest part of the mask was the very nature of the temple of Al-Monj in Shadowtown. Serving both as a temple and an embassy Jan as a sitting member of the lower council actually held an ambassador's rank.T'was no wonder some nobles looked sideways at him and his robes. Still Jan hardly thought of such things. The hidden servant had his own agenda afterall.

Still openly he was a monk of a benevolent god so this talk of goading students into attacking and even downright murder if only hinted at was quite odd. Honestly he thought these teachers would do well as followers of the dark goddess. The Idun born combat expert wad beginning to wonder at the worth of deception. It had been achieved easily enough but something was beginning to tell this undercover worshipper of power that announcing himself might gave been just as easily accepted.

Al-Jumi had her ways though and those ways were not to be trifled with. "Ah how dim does his light shine here if such can even be hinted at." He muttered to himself in the softest of voices as the Headmaster tried to deal the various concerns coming up. Jan's only concern was Shade's past being known, that nugget should have remained hidden. But magic it seemed could only be thwarted by the Mistress of Secrets herself and the lady only cast her shadow upon the most worthy.

#, as written by Mondieu
Maury considers it for a few seconds, and then realizes they might not be the right ones...

"did they happen to include kegs marked with a symbol like this?" Maury draws a strange curleycue in the air, no doubt some sort of alchemical symbol.

"Not that I noticed," says Luthien, seeming unconcerned. "You do recall that classes don't start until tomorrow -- and possibly not even then, for you, depending on how the scheduling works out?"

"As usual, I'll be introducing everyone at lunch -- so please be prompt -- and giving a brief overview of your classes. Students will then have until dinner to sign up, and I'll be sorting out the schedule after that."

"The Chatelaine has graciously agreed to take on that responsibility," Luthien answered. "I do encourage you to use detention sparingly, however. A verbal reprimand should suffice for a first offence, unless it is a serious one."

Katherine mutters something under her breath, something inaudible and incomprehensible to most. Not unless someone spoke her native language, that is.

She then reverts back to using the original vernacular.

"If a student harasses me personally or anybody in my classes, I cannot make promises, Headmaster."

She is looking down at her lap, her hands tightly gripping her dress.

Luthien regarded Katherine for a long, silent moment, before he looked around at the others, and spoke.

"If there are no further matters, this meeting is concluded. Once again, please arrive promptly for lunch today. Professor Clarice... a moment more of your time?"

As the others filtered out, Luthien waited, his hands together on the table, fingertips interlocked. He watched the others leave, and then finally looked back at the woman who remained.

"Katherine," he said quietly. "I am... concerned. Just how much danger am I placing my students in, if I allow you to teach in your condition? Perhaps a sabbatical is in order."

She suddenly slams her palms on the table.

"A SABBATICAL IS THE LAST THING I WOULD NEE-"

She has to stop herself from yelling as she places a hand on her ribs, and she begins to cough furiously, and her panting returns. Her other hand balls up until the knuckles were as white as snow, and she slams it on the table.

"...dammit..."

She drops back down to the chair, her breath now shaky and uncanny. Tears, derived from a mix of pain, anger, fear, and regret, begin to swell up in her eyes.

It isn't until after a long moment passes does she speak again, even then, she takes long pauses to catch her breath.

"...after remembering about that time...I...and between the pain and the...it coming out again...I-I'm...I am sorry. Luthien, I...I haven't repaid...haven't...acted as I should have. If you...or perhaps you can call another to take over during...

...no. I...I can teach...I just need my mind cleared out...and my body mended...just a day's worth of rest.

...just a day's worth of rest is all I need. Headmaster, I ask that you grant me a one day sabbatical."

Luthien watched and listened as Katherine struggled with herself, not flinching at the impact of her fist against the table.

"I do not fault you in the least," said Luthien gently. "But I am not certain that a day will be sufficient. I would not wish to place the stress of a deadline on you, when it is hardly necessary."

He steepled his hands. "I cannot truly teach your advanced class, but I can assign them some readings on the topics you cover, sufficient to keep them occupied. As for elementary summoning, I daresay I can manage the first few lessons there."

"So, please, take what time you need, and come to me when you are ready." He added, almost tentatively, "Is there anything else I might do, to aid you...?"

Katherine shakes her head.

"...nothing more...nothing...nothing but to receive my thanks..."

She stands up, still clutching her side, and hobbles away from the Blue Room, towards her own room. If she could take the door back to Vostroi...

Before Luthien can decide that he can leave, Tristan steps out from the doorway. He was listening in on the two of them in secret, it seems.

"...she's breaking apart, Headmaster," Tristan stiffly says, his apathetic voice softly floating about the room. "Do you really think a single day's worth of rest will grant her full recovery? If she cannot cope with her stress..."

He drifts off, his bright green eyes showing vacancy as he looks off to a wall.

"...I've done my research, Headmaster. I know what she contains. It's the reason why she visits the Contineomancy chamber every night, why instead of hearing her, I hear a monster."

"I have told her to take what time she needs," Luthien said, his voice somewhat stiff as well. "What more would you have me do, Professor Rephaim?"

He sighed, gestured the man inside, and continued in a low tone, "If I were to dismiss her, where would she go? I assure you, I do not relish the thought of dealing with... that which she bears. But deal with it I will, if it comes to it, for I relish the thought of it escaping among unwitting civilians even less."

He shook his head slightly, his gold gaze distant, then blinked away whatever he was envisioning, and looked at Tristan. "Was there something else you wish to discuss?" Both the words and his tone implied that the previous subject was closed.

"No, sir," Tristan responded in kind. He was done. With a brief bow, he turned about-face and walked away, presumably to somewhere else.

Alone now, Luthien regarded the small illusion of the Great Hall. Four of the new students had not yet arrived, three Suns and one Candle. The Chatelaine stood watch for them, of course... but so would he, for a time.

And should any of his teachers wish to have a private discussion with him, they would know where to find him.
