Seren has always been a shy creature. Her parents coddled her, friends made her instead of her making friends, never branching out to the unknown. She'd rather do something by herself than ask for help. Which also plays into her stubbornness. She's so afraid of being a bother to other people, she'd do everything on her own. She didn't think of her inconvenience of stowing away on a ship, however, until it had already set sail. Now she has an anxiety about her. She tries to fight the fear of being trapped with the knowledge at her, personally, may not be moving, but a ship is never still. Not even at the bottom of the ocean.
Humans have always fascinated her. The concept of fire, of dancing, forks, knives, treasure, anything with a human core. She's curious about all things, but mostly those of humanity. She hates her naivity. The knowledge that she knows very little. It makes her gullable. A pawn for others to move on a board in a game of chess. She hates others making decisions for her. She's also thoughtful. Quick to gift or give of her heart. She's kind. She'd rather give to others than to keep to herself. And again, she doesn't want to burden others. So sometimes she finds kindness in removing herself from situations. If it wasn't for the fact that her choices were between jumping into the sea and giving up human life, or being a burden on others, she would've made that jump.
Seren Delmare was born among the sea. A daughter of the ocean. There are rumors surrounding how a mermaid is created. Made from seafoam and given life by another. Born the same as a pear, within an oyster. But truthfully, it is the same as a mammal. Now I won't get into the scandalous details, but Seren's parents were fond of her for she was the first and only. And because of that, she was coddled, protected, spoiled. She was kept within a safety net made of coral and seaweed. She never saw the cage it was until the day she discovered humanity for herself.
She was fourteen, swimming around and testing the limits of her borders. She had swum to the shallows and observed children in play. They squealed and sung, laughed, and splashed. And they didn't have fins like she, nor did they appear to be able to breathe underwater. She was too afraid to talk to them, but she observed them until the sunset and they returned to their own homes. She returned every day. She fell in love when she was sixteen. A boy with raven locks, a smile like a summer sea, and eyes the color of the ocean waves. She nearly got up the nerve to speak with him but was discovered by her family and dragged back beneath the sea where she was kept within her coral prison.
When she was seventeen, her parents got mixed up with the mer-government, and was murdered. To avoid a fate of her own, and in search of her freedom once more, she escaped from her kingdom and made her way to shore. For the first time in her life, she walked on two legs instead of swimming with fins. She moved inland, attempted to get as far from the sea as she could afraid the temptation to return to the water would be too much. She fell in love and moved inland. But the sea would not be easily forgotten. When her love was murdered by robbers on the highway, she had nowhere to go and so, heeded the call of the water. However, she wasn't about to return to the mess of the sea she left behind.
But she couldn't ignore the call any longer.
And so, she made a plan to hang around the port, waiting for a ship for her to climb aboard. When she saw The Stardust something tugged her heart. It was a gorgeous ship and it wasn't manned by an enormous crew. In fact, as she observed, most of the crew left the ship, leaving her an opening to climb aboard. She made her way down to the cargo barge where she knew she would be able to hide until the ship had set sail. She hoped they wouldn't just turn around. And she really hoped she wouldn't have to jump into the sea.
