Introduction

Proloque
July 28, 2010. Akihabara.

Within the bustling electronics district of Tokyo, a man with brushed-back hair and dressed in a lab coat takes a girl to a press conference. The man, named Rintarou Okabe, explains to his childhood friend Mayuri Shiina about the press conference at Radio Hall, which is about "The Invention of The Century": a Time Machine.

Suddenly, Rintarou's thoughts are disturbed by what he thought was an earthquake. Upon closer inspection, he finds a strange object on the roof. Soon, however, he is called back by Mayuri, who wants to take him to somewhere more interesting.

Mayuri is in front of vending machines. She laments on lacking 100-yen coins to play. What appears more unfortunate for her is that her childhood friend plans to waste his 100-yen coin on a blind spin on the vending machine. Ironically, Rintarou gets the rarest of the items available and, since he is not interested on the stuff he got, he gives it to Mayuri.

Soon, an announcement of the start of the conference is broadcast, and Mayuri and Rintarou part ways for the meantime.

The conference later begins, led by a certain Dr. Nakabachi. Rintarou attends the meeting, while Mayuri stays outside; Mayuri later tells Rintarou that she lost her newly-acquired Metal Oopa toy figure and is looking for it. Rintarou soon continues on listening to the lecture, however, he finds out that there is something alarming about Dr. Nakabachi's theories on a time machine, which he describes as something pulled straight from the John Titor theory.

Before Rintarou could make any more fuss in the conference, he is pulled away by a young woman. At first, Rintarou complains about what she just did, but the young woman turns out to be Kurisu Makise, a famous figure in the field of scientific research. Rintarou resorts to his phone, in which he reports to "someone" regarding being caught by an operative of a certain Agency.

Kurisu manages to snatch his phone and discovers that it is turned off.

Rintarou tries to keep himself from being humiliated by the female to no avail. Kurisu, however, goes straight into the topic, asking him about what he wanted to tell her earlier. In response, Rintarou just gives a farewell remark and sprints downstairs.

For a moment, Rintarou feels nervous, still denying the fact that they have met before.

Soon, he receives a message on his phone, but instead of seeing a message, he finds a noise movie on his phone...

He is soon accompanied by Mayuri, who now laments on the loss of her new toy. Rintarou tells her to forget about finding it, but Mayuri's remark about the auctioning price of her new toy made Rintarou change his mind; Mayuri, however, reminds her childhood friend that they would not sell the toy anyway.

All of a sudden, their conversation is interrupted by a blood-curdling scream of a man from nowhere. Mayuri wonders where the sound came from, but Rintarou decides that it might not be safe and tells Mayuri to leave the building.

Rintarou takes a look himself and discovers that there is a room that has its door ajar. Upon closer inspection, he sees a shocking sight: Kurisu Makise, the young woman who talked to him earlier, is dead, bathing in a pool of her own blood.

A pale-faced Rintarou exits the building, and he could only tell a few words to Mayuri about what happened.

"Someone stabbed Kurisu Makise in the eighth floor of Radio Hall."

The sound of ambulance sirens soon interrupt the bustling tempo of people in that stretch of Akihabara road. Although shaken by the incident, he manages to walk away unscathed, only to find himself in another unusual situation when presses "send" on his phone...

Unknown number: 0.571024...

After Rintarou sends a message pertaining to Kurisu Makise's death, he suddenly finds himself on the same place he was in Akihabara, only that there was no people in sight. He returns to the building where the conference was held — and the place where Kurisu was killed — and finds only Mayuri accompanying him. Mayuri appears oblivious to what happened, and this caused Rintarou to be a bit paranoid, but his fears are soon replaced by shock, when the same building he exited a while ago now has what appears to be an artificial satellite crashed on the top floor.

Rintarou and Mayuri are soon joined by Itaru Hashida, a skillful hacker, and Rintarou "officially" christens his Lab members... in front of a TV monitor which displays the picture of an alpaca with the face of a man. Itaru and Rintarou are initially at odds with each other; Itaru is too busy browsing the Web while Rintarou is busy praising himself.

Soon, Itaru changes the channel to the news using Futuristic Gadget #1 (which is simply a remote control shoved inside a light-and-sound toy gun), where the satellite crash that happened in the Radio Hall is flashed. Mayuri then reminds Rintarou about his supposed reaction on the crash; Itaru even tells Rintarou about how angry the latter was when the conference was canceled.

What's unusual is that Rintarou did attend a conference. However, he concludes that it might be the doing of a certain "Agency".

Rintarou soon finds out that the only TV in their Lab has stopped working, and since Itaru did not want to cooperate, Rintarou is forced to carry the defective TV under the hot sun. He and Mayuri soon arrive and Rintarou demands a rigorous fixing of the TV. The CRT TV shop master Mister Braun agrees to fix it under the payment of a couple thousand yen, which Rintarou is shocked at initially. He soon gives in to Mister Braun's offer and leaves the shop with a disgruntled face. Luckily, Mayuri is there to cheer him up a bit.

Rintarou finally snaps from Mister Braun's "oppression" and asks Itaru to activate Futuristic Gadget #8. Itaru was disgusted with Rintarou's way of talking, but decides to let him do what he wants. The experiment involves bananas, like always, and Mayuri protests to turning bananas she buys into inedible jelly. However, Rintarou remains stubborn, so Mayuri is forced to play along.

As expected, Mayuri's bananas turned into jelly.

Rintarou soon takes the recluse Itaru outside; although the professional hacker continues on his complaints about being under the sun for too long (in fact, ten minutes), Rintarou heads on. To acquire academic units, they are going to attend a seminar on the Akihabara Techno Forum (ATF) at Dai-Building. Inside, Rintarou discovers by accident that the message that he sent (to Itaru) about Kurisu Makise's death on the 28th is sent five days into the past, on the 23rd.

What shocks Rintarou more is that the subject of the message, Kurisu Makise is standing outside the elevator, and is nothing compared to the girl who was doused in her own blood.

The following are the available characters:
Mayuri Shiina
Mayuri Shiina (椎名まゆり, Shiina Mayuri), also called Mayushii, is Rintarō Okabe's childhood friend and companion. She works part-time at a maid cafe called May Queen Nyan-nyan as a costume maid and occasionally makes cosplay outfits. She is usually the one who financially supports Rintarou's "research" when food is needed.

She possesses an extremely childish and naïve attitude for her age. She is still interested in childish merchandise and is a major airhead. This may have something to do with her inability to accept the death of her grandmother when she was young. Mayuri likes to give cute nicknames to familiar people, like Rintarou (Okarin), and refers to herself as Mayushii.

Mayuri was also shown to be very simple-minded, as she mostly seems to only care about food or toys. She cannot handle complicated information thrown at her by Rintarou or Kurisu, often misphrasing or misunderstanding them, though at certain times her responses can be quite helpful. Also, Mayuri does not question Daru's perverted comments and mannerisms, or is not in any way offended by them (though this is likely because she does not interpret them as such).

Despite being socially inept, she is also responsible for Rintarou's well-being, usually tending to his needs most of the time. She's also very attentive to details, often noticing things about people that others would miss. She figured out Suzuha Amane is Itaru Hashida's daughter through the details on the Time Machine and from Daru's daily habits, suggesting a degree of skills in observation and problem-solving.

Kurisu Makise
Kurisu Makise (牧瀬紁E栁E Makise Kurisu) is a young and extremely talented neuroscience researcher.

Unlike people of her age, Kurisu has shown a more mature attitude, usually calm and collected even when someone is acting tense in front of her. However, she can also show a much more timid side at times. She has been described as a tsundere by Rintaro Okabe and Itaru Hashida time and time again. She has proven to be greatly annoyed by Okabe's paranoid tendencies.

Though she's hesitant to admit it, she's a frequent user of the text board @Channel, donning the identity "KuriGohan and Kamehameha". Rintarou likes to trick her into admitting this habit, much to her chagrin. When posting on @channel her personality is noticeably different, as she often uses Netspeak or emoticons to communicate and her posts are generally much less mature than her usual dialogue.

Kurisu is also known by lab members and Okabe especially as a source of evil in the kitchen, as they despise Kurisu's many-a-times questionable cooking skills and taste palate.

Itaru Hashida
Itaru Hashida (橋田至, Hashida Itaru), also known as Barrel Titor in 2025, is an experienced hacker in both software and hardware technologies. He is also well-versed in things pertaining to otaku culture. Rintarou and Mayuri call him by the nickname "Daru".

Daru is obsessed and extremely talented with programs and computers, capable of hacking into top-secret organizations's mainframes and processing complex computer codes. He is very proficient with the IBN5100, though is unable to make out any of the information he dug up due to his lack of skill in English.

Daru, like Rintarou, enjoys making Future Gadgets, but is not as enthusiastic and has voiced his desire to sell them for money. Daru is apparently bad when it comes to naming, as he would always add an irrelevant model serial and version number to the end of the gadget's name.

He supposedly has an obsession with both 2D and 3D girls and is a big fan of Faris. Because of his speech, he is called and known as a major pervert. Daru supposedly possesses rich knowledge when it comes to dating, as he gave Rintarou "advices" on his upcoming date with Ruka, though Rintarou claimed that Daru was just using experience from his H-games, and does not have any real "skills".

Shouichi Makise

Shouichi Makise (ドクター中鉢, Makise Shouichi), publicly known as Dr. Nakabachi, was a scientist researching in the field of time-travelling. He is later revealed to be the father (and attempted killer) of Kurisu Makise.

Yuugo Tennouji
Yuugo Tennouji (天王寺 裕吾 Tennōji Yūgo) is Rintarou Okabe's landlord and the owner of the CRT store.

He has a great passion for CRT Television and refuses to upgrade to any other type. This coupled with the fact he owns a CRT store has resulted in Rintarou nicknaming him "Mr. Braun" after the inventor of CRTs, German physicist Ferdinand Braun and the common Japanese name for CRTs, "Braun Tubes".

While appearing as a tough and menacing man and often using this demeanour to jokingly bully Rintarou, he actually has a soft spot for the lab members and cares about their well-being. His daughter Nae is his top priority and he will go to desperate lengths to ensure her safety.

Yuugo has a bad temper, and is very easily annoyed by Rintarou's mannerisms as well as his "experiments" upstairs. He regularly threatens to raise the lab's rent money should the experiments continue to disturb him, though this as never actually happened.

In the presence of both his daughter and Rintarou, he would often attempt to "protect" her from Rintarou, whom he sees as a "pervert", though he was likely joking.

Ruka Urushibara
Ruka Urushibara (漆原るか, Urushibara Ruka) is a close friend of Mayuri Shiina and so-called protégé of Rintarou Okabe. While feminine in appearance and personality, Ruka is a male.
Mayuri is his classmate, who often attempts to coerce him into cosplaying (without much success).

Although being biologically male, Ruka has an extremely feminine appearance, causing him much trouble (and attention) from men (even Daru was at one point attracted to Ruka's appearance). He is very slim, with thin arms and lanky body. Ruka is flat-chested.

Ruka have always dreamed of being a complete girl, and was disappointed that he was born a male. This changes later on, as Ruka was turned into a female through the influence of a D-mail, though the female Ruka does not remember being male before.

He is very sensitive and emotional, as simple sudden responses from Rintarou can cause him to cry or tremble. He likes to wear girly clothing, which caused Kurisu to confuse him for a real girl when the two met in Rintarou's lab. Rintarou even described him as "more girly than any girl, more feminine than any female" in the game.

Ruka harbors deep feelings for Rintarou, ever since their first encounter in Akihabara, when he was still a male. Later in the story, as Rintarou attempts to save Mayuri by reversing the effects of sent D-mails, the female Ruka tearfully agreed under the condition of Rintarou taking her out on a date. The date turned out awkwardly, since Rintarou was unable to be himself around her. He came to see her at the shrine and apologizes for botching the date, and the two embraces, Ruka said she would still love him even if she's no longer female.

Suzaha Amane
Suzuha Amane (阿万音鈴羽, Amane Suzuha), later known as Suzu Hashida, is a part-time employee for Yuugo Tennouji, the landlord of Rintarou's flat and is on a search for her father in Akihabara. She enjoys riding her bicycle and appears to be at odds with Kurisu.
She is in fact a time traveller from 2036 who, under the guise of John Titor, seeks to prevent SERN from creating a Time Machine that will lead to dystopia. Though she is unaware of it, she is the daughter of Itaru Hashida and Yuki Amane.

Moeka Kiryu
Moeka Kiryuu (桐生萌郁, Kiryū Moeka) is a tall girl that Rintarō bumps into in Akihabara. She is on a search for the IBN 5100 personal computer

Moeka is extremely shy, her preferred form of comunication being via text messaging even if the person she is "talking" to is right in front of her. As such, she is very protective of her phone and becomes agitated if someone tries to take it from her hands.

Moeka seemed more or less interested in Rintarou, calling him Okabe-kun, and constantly sends him emails as attempts to talk to him, though this is unclear if she wants his company or simply because she has been ordered to. Her habit of constantly spamming his mailbox with lengthy SMS's made Rintarou ignore them, much to her dismay.

Faris Nyannyan
Faris Nyannyan (フェイリス・ニャンニャン, Feirisu Nyannyan) Real name Rumiho Akiha (秋葉 留美穂, Rumiho Akiha) is a part-time employee and owner of the maid cafe May Queen Nyan-nyan, the same maid cafe that Mayuri works at, and is the most popular waitress there. She is a second year in Kanaria Private Academy and is Yukitaka Akiha's daughter

Being the waitress and owner of a moe cafe, Faris would always adds "Nya" to her speech as to boost her "moe-ness". She has an ability to see into people's hearts just by looking into their eyes, which she calls the "Cheshire Break". She has a father complex, while at the same time apparently harboring feelings for Rintarou.

A long time friend of Rintarou, she likes to play along with his delusions and comes up with scenarios herself. Faris is one of the few people who does not think of Rintarou as "weird"

Nae Tennouji
Nae Tennouji (天王寺 綯 Tennōji Nae), is the only daughter of Yuugo Tennouji and Tsuzuri Imamiya. She is a young girl living in fear of Rintarou Okabe/Hououin Kyouma
A very timid and reserved girl, Nae likes to keep out of Rintarou's way, as his Hououin Kyouma persona frightens her. She is good friends with Mayuri and Suzuha though and thinks of them as her older sisters, often exchanging a friendly "Tutturu" with Mayuri, and hanging around with Suzuha when she is working in the CRT TV store.

She loves her father very much and often feels like she's imposing on him, even going so far as to learn cookery from Mayuri and Kurisu for his sake.
