{ History }

Emery grew up in an average family, with a teacher for a mother and a mechanic for a father. His parents were permanent residents of Buffalo, having lived there their whole lives, and found no need or desire to leave the place. The Baldwins were well liked people that lived humble lives. Though Emery was not entirely the best son, his parents were proud of his fair grades in school and the effort he put in to being a good mentor for his little brother Evan. Emery wasn't like other children when his brother rolled around, he was more than excited to take on the responsibilities of being a big brother. His brother was born six years later than him and Emery knew well what it felt like to be the only child, but he didn't even think twice when he met his little brother for the first time. Emery was a remarkably smart and levelheaded six year old, and understood that his little brother needed more attention than him. Emery loved his brother from the moment he saw the little squishy bundle being cared in the door.

Throughout their childhood Emery was a companion, leader, and confidant for his brother. They were truly and remarkably the best of friends. Emery helped Evan with his homework, he gave the kid advice on the ladies, and he attended every single hockey game that Evan was in. Though there was a remarkable age difference between the two, Emery never thought less of his little brother, in fact he often admired the way that Evan was able to remain calm in any situation and address the problem with grace.

As they grew older, their relationship flourished more, and by the time that Emery was just eighteen he couldn't imagine his life without his brother. When Emery went off to college he made sure to keep in contact with his brother, and they had weekly phone sessions. While Emery was away on his adventure in college he of course met a girl. The girl of his dreams, in fact. Her name was Olivia Carlson, and Emery couldn't get enough her. Long story short, after graduation the two were expecting, engaged, and Emery was starting to see his life take off. Everything was perfectly golden until New Years.

Emery, his beautiful fiancee, and brother all went out to a party together, but only one came home. Driving home late that night Emery was at the wheel. In the back his brother gabbed on and on about a girl he had met at the shindig and Olivia slept in the passenger seat. Emery was careful, he knew to be careful. There were drunk drivers everywhere on New Years. But Emery wasn't careful enough.

He was lucky to be alive they said, he should take this opportunity as his second chance. But Emery didn't want a second chance, not without his brother and not without his fiancee who had been carrying their unborn child.

{ Last Moments }
After months of slow recovery, Emery slipped into depression. Emery hung himself. He was too angry with himself and too overwhelmed with guilt to commit himself to life.

{ Positive traits }
Emery is a warm person, and man who really cares about people and their lives. This trait is hard to find now-a-days though. Emery has an instinctual father-like attitude toward anyone substantially younger than himself. Emery is brave and has a deep love for the outdoors, these traits together explain his constant talk about living off of the wilderness and enjoying solitude. Emery is a natural leader, and has the charisma for it. He also has an undying dedication and loyalty for those he cares about and causes he believes in. He can charm and swoon women, though he hasn't done so very a long while. Emery tries to be respectful, but his temper often times gets the better of him.

{ Negative traits }
Emery's passion could very well be a negative force in his personality. Once he finds what he believes to be right he'll never back down, he's extremely stubborn that. And his temper has grown even more since he's had to deal with these newcomers.

{ Personality }
Emery always tries to do what's right. He of course isn't the perfect leader, or the perfect man, or the perfect brother either. He has his short temper and he's stubbornness. His devotion often times gets him stuck and closes his mind to new ideas. He tries to have an open mind and have respect for the other opinions around him, but he is also the sort of man who goes with his gut feeling. Whether it be right or wrong, in the end Emery always gets the job done. He's a hard worker and extremely thorough in his processes. He never likes to do something twice, which is why he puts in 6 times the effort than most. He is driven most by personal feelings and partly from a diplomatic position. Beyond the cold exterior of this broken man is someone who is truly fiery. He loves people, and wants the best for them, even if it doesn't make him happy. He knows how hard life is a tries to make other's life a little bit better. Since being in The Middle he has become this combination of fire and ice. He is intimate and caring on some days and a tyrant on other days. Emery just trying to find his way and forget about his past life.

The tension seemed to die down with the finish of Emery's speech. This was only the began, though, and Cassidy knew better than to expect that things would be flawless now that everyone understood, for the most part, what was going on. Just because Sam's new catch had calmed down and walked off with her didn't mean that he wasn't going to still be a dick, and just because the wailing mother's tears had subsided didn't mean that she wasn't still a maniac. Six new people meant that there would be a lot more noise and a lot more people to annoy her. It would take some getting used to, especially on Cassidy's part, but she hoped that they would at least keep their drama and problems away from her.

Emery stepped town from his makeshift stage and began to speak with the mother and the woman who had called him pretty boy. She couldn't hear what they were saying and she mostly didn't care. He had to be nice to everyone; it was a responsibility that came with his role. Although there was still one new person missing, Cassidy had quenched her curiosity and didn't feel the need to wait around all day to see the last new person. They would be living together for, well... forever, and knowing the person for a few extra minutes wasn't worth the frenzy that the first few minutes brought on.

"I won't disagree with you on that," Cass murmured in response to Oliver's prediction that headaches would be a lot more common now. "I'm going t-," she began to excuse herself from his company when the crazy mother separated from her group and headed straight for Cassidy. She met the girl's gaze and even though she saw it coming, she was surprised that the girl had the nerve to approach her, and then call her Cass. She had overheard Donald introduce her as that so she really couldn't blame the girl, but they definitely were not on a nickname basis. Although she noticed that the girl held out a hand for her to shake, Cassidy didn't acknowledge it. She wasn't trying to be a "mean girl" or bitch, since Effy did well enough with that role on her bad days, but she still wasn't fond of the girl at all, and Cassidy was never one to hide her feelings. "Didn't you hear Emery? You already got your chance to start over today," she said plainly. She held her gaze for a moment before turning to Oliver. "I'll catch you later." She gave him a small, but genuine smile before swiftly turning and disappearing into the brush.

The woman with the child seemed sincere, but she didn't take the time to introduce herself or exchange anything more than a thank you. Emery thought it odd, but wasn't going to fuss over the idea. She probably didn't want to talk with him, currently he was portraying a sort of bad guy. People didn't want to hear the truth, but Emery had to deliver it. It also did't help that Annalise was making her entrance. Without any delay many of the new comers were drawn to her. And that was of course because she was an absolute ray of sunshine. So bright that it often hurt Emery's eyes. But he didn't mind the slew of new residents being welcomed by the current ones. In fact, he found the whole scene very nice. Things were settling well enough.

Of course there was still a straggler, but Emery was more than capable of introducing himself and The Middle to just one. Emery watched as the two English newbies conversed with each other, as the two women who had been in the pool together went toward Annalise, and the new boy toy get eaten alive by Samantha. He rolled his eyes at the last one. She was always trying to catch something. He started to take note of names. Rocco was the English man, the boy toy was named Charlie, and the woman with short brown hair was named Christina. His focused turned to Cassidy as the woman who he now learned was named Macie approached her. Powerfully and classically Cassidy she dismissed the woman and made her exit. Emery wanted to smirk at the situation but refrained. He then walked toward Macie and gave her a couple of words of encouragement, "Cassidy isn't always like that... She just takes some getting used to." She also takes her time with making friends with people, and if you aren't worth the effort you just aren't her friend. At least that's how Emery understood it. She was far too complex for Emery to fully understand, but he was fairly sure that he knew that much.

He offered a friendly smile to Macie as he moved toward Rocco and the girl he didn't know. They weren't being helped and needed to do something. "Do you two want me to show you around?" he asked simply, finally stopped in front of them. "I'm Emery, by the way." He shot out his hand, letting whatever sour feelings he had toward Rocco sink away. He needed to make a neutral playing ground before judging someone too harshly.

Donnie endured the slight embarrassment of Annalise pinching his cheeks. "Don't be silly, Donnie! You're much more attractive then me." she said in a joking fashion. As soon as she let go however, he answered with a kind smile as the mother introduced herself.

"I'm Macie O'Connell. Nice to meet you all....even with what's going on." Macie said, looking to each of them with a warm grin While she had a beautiful smile, he couldn't help but think about how she must have felt. Donald didn't have any kids. He didn't even have any younger nieces or nephews, but if he did he couldn't imagine what it must be like to be separated from one of them like that. What he could think of however was the possible ways that she and the others ended up in the Middle. Sure, some people didn't remember offing themselves, but they were never this insulted or, in the case of the guy Sam was helping, insulting about the idea.

Before the writer could speak any further, Macie had already headed towards Cass. What the hell is she thinking? he thought to himself as the other woman who introduced herself as Christina approached Annalise. She quickly leaped at the opportunity to show her around and the two were off. It was then that Donnie looked back to check on Macie, who was by herself as Cass had no doubt walked off and Emery was helping the other two new arrivals. Tying his jacket around his waist, he approached Macie with a confident stride. "I could help you find your hut if you're ready." he said gesturing into the thick jungle near them. "...and don't take what Cassidy said personally. She's not as open as some of us."

The crowd grew less disquieted about arriving here, and soon some of the more experienced locals left to show the new ones where they were encamped, he supposed. Rocco was especially thankful for the hush that followed. It offered him time to at least assess the situation he was in right now.

First: He had died.
The dull ache in his head had experienced upon first arriving had disappeared completely. He was, to some degree, sure he wasn't going to walk out of that alive. If he were lucky enough to have done so, perhaps he would have sustained some great degree of brain damage.

Second: He had died painting his mother's house.
His stomach sunk at the thought of leaving everything behind. He had finally made a relatively happy life for himself in Portland. He was able to pay off his bills. He could afford to pay at least more than half of the cost of his mother's new house, the other part from his maternal uncle. He missed the chance to finally see her happy after all of the trouble she had endured. No, it wasn't fair at all. He needed to leave to see everything set straight.

Third: This was [a sort of] purgatory.
He couldn't simply show himself out. There wasn't a door out of things like this. Of course, he had expected fire and flames and moaning. While there was a severe lack of tongues of flame lapping at his feet—though dun, charred flesh, he thought, was much better than having skin as white as the lies his aunt Poppy told him at five—the moaning was definitely there. Or, at least, in the first few minutes following their arrival.

This was a haven for suicides, that much he knew. But something was off about this place. If indeed this was a purgatory, the others would have at least some of their conflict resolved. As demonstrated by some of the residents, it seemed it wasn't entirely the case.

He wasn't a suicide. None of the others he had arrived with were, either.

Now how were they going to leave?

Fourth: They probably wouldn't be going anywhere for a while.

Fifth: Might as well make the best out of it.

It appeared he didn't have much choice but to play along with the rules of this strange place, no matter how long it took. If there was a way back to the land of the living, he would take his opportunity in a heartbeat, if only to see his work come to fruition. If the circumstances dictated that he was going to have to live here, then he was going to have to make do with what he had.

Emery made his way to them, and he readied himself for whatever he could throw at him. Instead, what he got was a greeting and an offer to be shown around. A bit tight-lipped one but a greeting nonetheless.
He took his hand and shook it, gripping it in earnest enthusiasm. "Pleasure," he nodded. "That would be brilliant, yeah. Have a few questions for you. Before we head off. What are these trunks for, and where can one get good wood around here?"
