The Midnight Carnival

What appears to be a normal travelling carnival by day turns into a supernatural show at midnight.

Introduction

ImageImage

The Midnight Carnival appears to be an average travelling carnival with its amusement rides, food vendors and games of chance, and during the day, it essentially is. However, it also offers a circus show at midnight which is only open to people ages eighteen and older. There's a hefty entrance fee but that's a small price to pay for the unique spectacles that are shown during the performances.

What the audience doesn't know, is that the show is not an illusion or an act. There are no tricks or special effects in play, but the performers were not born with these supernatural abilities. The owner of the carnival, known only as Mr. Aefric, "adopted" them. Some of them were literally adopted, coming from orphanages and group homes where no one would question what happened to them, and others came because they had no where else to go. Mr. Aefric took them in allowed them to join the carnival family under the condition that they perform.

Because none of them had extraordinary abilities, a pill was concocted for each of them which gave them a supernatural ability. They are all each given a separate pill which ensures that they will not age and are basically immortal. While it sounds amazing, there's a catch. After the person takes the pills once, they'll die within a week if they don't continue to take them daily. This forces the performers to stay with The Midnight Carnival or face a guaranteed and painful death.

There are currently eight main performers in The Midnight Carnival and just recently, two new ones were recruited by The Powerful One. She's Mr. Aefric's girlfriend and the only one who knows him well. Because he is extremely illusive and is rarely seen, she's the one who runs the show and has a reputation of being cold-hearted and merciless, often starving the performers of their pills for days at a time if they refuse to comply with her orders.

Matthaus' eyes flicked across the young boy, skimming him in a circular pattern. The boy was awfully fidgetty, and Matthaus would even dare to say he trembled at the sight of him. Which was a little strange, even for his standards. He's had every reaction one could possibly imagine. But Matthaus could have sworn that the lad was down right scared of him.

Despite this however, Matthaus gave a toothy grin and a light chuckle,"Well it's a pleasure to m-" Instictively, the blonde's head snapped to look at the door that almost flung open and hit him. He took a quick side step, letting the door swing open, only to see Gracen dragged up into the trailer. The man couldn't help but laugh at Alexa's energy. She always appeared to have an abundance of it. "Hey!" He said through his laughter.

Climbing into the trailer with ease and briefly seeing who was also present, Matthaus finished,"I was talking to the boy, Alexa." He raised an eyebrow with a smirk. "Can't just steal people from conversations like that."

His blue eyes went around the trailer again. There was Kaylee, Ryder, Catalina, Alexa, Lucas, and another stranger. Probably the other new member to their lovely crew. "Ooooh!" Matthaus exhaggerated, raising yet another eyebrow. "Another new performer I see." Matthaus closed the door behind him. The camper was crowded. As big as they were, there just seemed to be no more space to sit. Luckily Matthaus never had a problem with small spaces.

Weaving around Gracen and Alexa with a curvy turn, Matthaus found himself in front of the counter. The smell of chicken and rice overwhelming his nose. "Ah!" Matthaus reveled in the pleasure of the smell. "Do you have enough food for one more Kitty?" His grin spread from ear to ear. But before Catalina could responde, his lanky fingers already grasped a plate and served himself a plateful. "Thank you Cat!"

Around this time, a lot of the people within the trailer were moving about. Kaylee decided to take Jade a place, Matthaus giving a cheery hello as she passed. Ryder decided to show Gracen around, also passing by Matthaus to leave. But his greeting wasn't so joyful. Instead of saying hello at all, Ryder gavee Matthaus a vitale piece of information.

Brooke's location.

Matthaus' eyes grew wide and his mysterious, signature grin spread across his face once more.

Matthaus has been at the carnival for quite some time. He grew a very intricate web of relationships since he was here, yet, out of all those strings and threads, Brooke was one of the only people who liked toying with it. Sometimes it was humerous, other times it was just a plain annoyance. So whenevr things went missing, or things were not they way he left it, or if a costume or supply was sabotaged, Brooke was the most probably answer.

Now, Matthaus knew that Brooke wasn't the cause of all of this misfortunes. But there was probably a reason for Ryder to give away her location. She obviously did something to deserve it. So he figured the missing thread was her doing once again. So it would be a shame if he let this oppertunity come to waste.

Slipping past the remainder of the being aboard the vessel, Matthaus balanced his food in his hand, making his way towards the bathroom. He leaned against the wall for a few seconds in thought, but looke ddown at his food. "Oh. I forgot my fork." Simple fix. Instead of weaving around the group again Matthaus simply raised his hand in the air, allowing his arm to run along teh ceiling until it hunng over the counter once more. He quick reached for a fork, his fingers carefully grasping it before his arm returned to him. "There we go."

With a eyes wide from his raging appitite, he took a big mouthful of the food, wanting to moan from the delectable taste. "This is so good." He managed to say with his mouth half full, but making sure to cover his mouth with his wrist. "Marvelous cooking, as always Cat."

As much as Matthaus wanted to finish his food within the minute, there was work to do.

His ears listened to the sound of the shower head. His eyes looked at the ceiling as his lips curled into themselves. So many things he could do. But Matthaus eventually let his arm hang down, now rolling along the ground. It wasn't too hard for Matthaus to slip into tight spaces, but it did take a few seconds of thought as he did so. So as his fingers started to slid under the door, Matthaus closed his eyes. Relaxing was an important aspect of his ability. Relaxing certain parts of his body allowed him to move in the ways he did, and it was no different when it it came to sliding under things.

But then again, Matthaus had been training himself to do this for years. Thirty was it? About? Somewhere around there. He wasn't sure exactly but it was a decent amount of time. So his fingers and arm started to slid slowly under the door, crawling up the other side to reach for the handle.

Lucas barely looked up from his plate over the next few minutes. There was a lot going on and he figured that it would be easier to have a more thorough introduction with the new kids later on when things calmed down. Besides, his second plate of food seemed to taste even better than the first, if that was possible.

He did notice that Kaylee changed Brooke's blanket back to black which was a positive, but before Brooke could notice it, she had suddenly run into the bathroom, signaling that Matthaus was outside. She was right. He came in and made a plate of food for himself and somehow knew that Brooke was in the bathroom, since after taking a few bites, he glided through the crowded trailer to the bathroom.

At first, Lucas thought that he would knock and try to get Brooke out in a normal manner, but it wasn't exactly surprising that Matthaus wouldn't do it normally. He sighed when he spotted Matthaus' arm slink to the ground and slide under the door. He could hear the shower running but wasn't sure if Brooke was actually showering or had just turned it on as a divergent to make it seem like she was. Either way, he wasn't about to allow Matthaus to walk in on his girlfriend in the bathroom.

He took a last, over sized bite of his food before getting up and heading to the back of the bus. Although he guessed that Brooke had done something to deserve Matthaus being pissed off at her, he didn't need them to settle their score in the middle of the crowded bus.

"Dude, chill with that," Luke said, stepping on the part of Matthaus' unnaturally long arm that hadn't disappeared behind the door. He was always a little confused about how Matthaus' power worked. The way that his body moved and stretched like rubber was puzzling. Did he have any bones and if so, how did they not snap when he moved so strangely? However, it wasn't like any of there powers were exactly natural. "What do you need from her?" he then asked. He guessed that if Brooke hadn't been in the shower, she probably saw Matthaus' hand on the other side of the door but in case she hadn't, Lucas knocked on the door to catch her attention.

As Brooke listened at the door to the conversation she let out a sigh of relief and turns, leaning back against it when she seems to have stayed away of Matthaus for the moment. Just as she was about to step away from the door she heard Ryder give away her location and swore under her breath. Jumping away from the door Brooke went over to the window and tried to push it up but sighed when it didn't budge and she remembered Jade had locked it to keep her from sneaking out.

Turning away from the locked window Brooke saw Matthaus's hand snake under the door and shuddered before sitting down on the opposite side of the room with a sigh. Suddenly she heard Luke outside of the door followed by a knock. Knowing she couldn't lie to or avoid Lucas Brooke got up and walked to the door, unlocking it and opening it slowly. "Hey Dev, Hey Matt." Brooke let out a sheepish smile as she spoke and leaned against the door. Though she wouldn't admit it Brooke had always seen Matt as the big brother type only more of the irresponsible big brother. Fun to annoy and get into trouble with but not fun if you ever pissed him off.

Alexa Woodrow

Once the bus began to deflate with the leaving of Kaylee, Ryder and Gracen in tow, it felt a little more roomy. But of course once one person had left, another joined them. Matthaus entered the bus and served himself some food,"I would have thought a man of your age would cook for himself." Alexa joked, grinning to Matthaus as she slid into the booth seat opposite Jace, "But I'm sure Cat won't mind." Alexa looked over to Cat and gave her a half smile, wondering if she really didn't mind all these people helping themselves to her food.

Alexa watched for a while whilst the others ate, she didn't say much because she didn't want to overload the new-comer with information, but she didn't seem to mind the others around her, "Hey, so" Alexa began, looking up at Jace a she sat across from her. From the corner of her eye, she saw Matthaus' arm slither across the ceiling and retrieve a fork, Alexa chuckled and wondering if Jace saw too before she began talking again, "When do you wanna start learning? There's a lot more to us than just pulling pranks on each other." she would smirk, gesturing toward Matthaus who was now slowly sliding his arm underneath the bathroom door.

As Lucas stood up and headed over, Alexa leaned out of her seat to peek their way and shouted after him,"Killjoy!" she was bitter that Lucas had ruined the fun show, but she didn't mean anything harsh by it. If anything, 98% of the time, Alexa was never mean to anybody.

[OOC= Sorry for short post, I procrastinated for hours and by the time I got to writing all of my ideas escaped me]

The long, lanky arm slid up the hard wood of the door until his fingertips reached the cold knob. With his eyes still remaining closed, his fingers felt for the lock. It wasn't too hard either, considering their trailer was identical to the boys. However, before Matthaus was able to unlock the door-

"Ow!"

Matthaus yelped, his arm throbbing as someone's foot stepped on the stretching skin and muscles. His eyes flashed open to see the bold ol' hero coming to save the day again. His arm almost instantly recoiled back into itself, quickly retreating under the door frame to it's original length. "Tisk tisk Lucas."

His hand, after placing his plate down, grasped his arm, which was now turning red. "You should know I'm not perverting
So there is no need to go about hurting.
That's a pet peeve of mine.
" He never responded to Lucas' question.

Matthause, however, raised an eyebrow with an awkward smile before turning to the door which opened. Brooke leaned within the frame and gave a timid greeting, bringing a smile to his face. "Good afternoon Brooke." He nodded slightly, letting his arms fall to his hips. "You didn't happen to see some thread lying around did you?" His eyes grazed the ceiling, almost in thought as his finger tapped his chin. "It appears I have... lost some while I was working today or yesterday?" With his chin tilted down slightly, but with his hair falling in the way, Matthaus batted his eyes in a very familiar manner. Matthaus had many of those faces.

Though, it wasn't long before Matthaus lifted his head again, even before Brooke responded to glide his way over to the seats to finish off his plate, which was now balancing in his hands once more. He took a seat next to Alexa and Jace, though bringing his knees to his chest to save space. "I need that thread to start on my costume for my next performance." He had a habit of making a new costume and performance each time they stopped. This week's scheme was oranges and yellows. Next week was dark purples, blacks, and deep blues.

But Matthaus never had a very long attention span, and once he was done with what he had to say, he stuffed another mouthful of food into his pie hole. Chewing it slowly and covering his mouth with his wrist, he set his plate down and looked at Alexa and the newbie. He quickly swallowed and gave a big grin,"By the way, I do happen to know how to cook quite a lot. But Kitty's is soooo much better." He gave a brief glance to Catalina herself.

But he, again, had a small attention span when it came to matters like this. He looked at Jace with wide eyes. "I know everyone in this crew,
Even though they are few
But a new face is definitely due.
So who are you?
"

Jace continued to watch everyone as she ate, seeing the one person stretch an arm and slide it under the doorway. A nickname flashed through her mind but she wasnt sure if they would get the reference, no one here looked like the nerdy type really. She gave a shrug towards Alexa, not really sure when an appropriate time to start practice would be or even what kind of practice she would be doing. Jace still wasnt sure how she even got this job when she doesnt really have any skills that would pertain to a carnival, let alone have a little show of her own in the Midnight Carnival. She hoped that there would be a lot of wonderful colors and music, maybe dancing and singing as well. Jace always liked things like that, and it seems like something that would happen in a carnival show.

When her food was gone she stood to wash her plate, listening to the others as they continued to talk to each other. You can tell that they are close and have known each other for a long time by how they talk amongst themselves. She heard someone who seemed to be directing their words toward her. She turned to see the person who was stretching their arm earlier under a door, and the person was rhyming as well. It seemed kind of fun so Jace listened and pulled her words out from the top of her head in a response.
Ya axe so inturestin an with grace
Ah am in fact new ta this place
E'n though thur aint a familiar face
Ah axe tha ma friends call me Jace.

Catalina kept a tight grip on Kaylee's hand until she complied. "Very," she responded sarcastically when Kaylee asked if she was satisfied with the blanket being turned back to black. As soon as she lightened her force on the small wrist, Kaylee slipped out of her grasp and was bounding towards the door, piling food on a plate on her way and claiming that she was delivering food to Jade. "Hey!" was all that Catalina got out before Kaylee disappeared out of the bus.

She made her way to the door and leaned out, watching to make sure that Kaylee was in fact headed to Jade's bus. Although that was confirmed by the girl's path, she wasn't sure whether visiting Jade was even better than roaming around the carnival. Catalina often sent someone over to deliver meals to Jade, not because Jade ever asked for her to do so, but because she sometimes felt bad for the girl. She had known Jade for nearly thirty years and although she despised everything that the woman stood for, she did pity her in some respects. While the performers all had each other to hang out with, Jade had no one. Unless she was watching them rehearse or giving them orders for the day, she was alone and although she acted like she had no heart, Catalina could only imagine how lonely it got.

However, she usually preferred to send Alexa, Lucas or Ryder over with the food. Alexa was a very nice girl who got along with nearly everyone and rarely caused problems for Jade. Lucas and Ryder were similar in that aspect, where they would do what they were told to appease Jade and avoid confrontations with her. While it seemed passive, Catalina had learned that it was the easiest route to take. Even if, they were all somehow magically able to rebel and overthrow Jade without Mr. Aefric directly killing them, they would all die within a few days because they wouldn't have a supply to their pills anymore. As long as they did what they were told, life wasn't horrible at the carnival. Still, some of the others didn't seem to agree with this. Brooke had toned it down in terms of her rebellion against Jade which was a positive, but Catalina still didn't want the two to be around each other anymore than necessary. Ark was also a nice guy but he was so sensitive that again, Catalina didn't feel it would be helpful to put him near the unpredictably volatile woman if it wasn't required. Lastly, there was Matthaus. Although his relationship with Jade wasn't perfect either, Catalina didn't ask him because she simply disliked him herself. A lot of the performers had a love/hate relationship with him but it wasn't like that for Catalina. She couldn't stand him. His jokes weren't comical, his constant rhyming wasn't entertaining and his general demeanor just wasn't attractive. She had worked with him for twenty-eight years though, so it wasn't like she could constantly ignore him (although she tried to do it as much as possible). Most of the time she would fake a smile and treat him with sarcastic kindness, or more preferably, curse him out in Spanish under her breath, but there were times when she wanted "romperle el cuello de goma maldita" (snap his damn rubber neck).

In a few quick minutes, Kaylee had left, Matthaus and a young boy appeared, the young boy and Ryder had left, Lucas had gotten up to confront Matthaus- who now had a plateful of her food- about something, and Brooke had appeared from the bathroom. Catalina was never a fan of chaos. She was used to being in the crowded bus because even though it was a big trailer, when it was just the four girls in there it was crowded enough. Even though there had been a lot of commotion going on before Matthaus had even shown up, Catalina liked blaming it on him, especially after he used his despised nickname, "Kitty" for her. That alone was enough to make Catalina want to knock his frail body right off the bus. When Kaylee had been learning to talk, she would call her "Cat" rather than Catalina, because it was easier for the toddler. Catalina didn't mind Cat so much, especially since it ended up sticking with most of the other performers too, but "Kitty" was not okay. Maybe it was just because Matthaus was the one calling her it, but either way, she raised an eyebrow at him, watching as he indulged in her food.

"You better start putting your culinary skills to use because one day I'm going to accidentally use bleach instead of oil on your food," Catalina said after Matthaus made a comment about knowing how to cook. As she glanced back over at Jace, she gave her a gentle smile, trying to return to a friendly state after getting worked up from Matthaus.

As Jade lay on her bed, she had zoned out from the present. Her thoughts wandered back to the last day of her old life, her real life.

"I'm not marrying him, mom!" Jade argued, slamming her fist against the kitchen table as she gazed across at her mother.

The older woman stood up, walking towards Jade with a serious expression plastered on her face. It was a look that Jade had seen too many times over the past few weeks. "You're twenty-six years old, Jade. All of the girls you went to school with are probably already married with children. Thomas is a good man. He'll treat you well, he'll take care of you." Although her mother's voice was stern, Jade knew that she wasn't trying to be harsh. She truly thought that setting her up with her brother's friend was helpful but while Jade was aware that her mother wanted the best for her, she still would never marry someone who she had no connection with.

"I'm going out," Jade said blankly. She threw on a coat and walked aimlessly for a few blocks before coming across a carnival. It was nearing eleven thirty at night so it was mostly only populated by young adult couples rather than children, but there was still a decent sized crowd around.

Her dad had taken her to circus shows multiple times throughout her childhood and although she was too old to be amazed by juggling clowns and animals jumping through hoops, she had no where else to go and decided to buy a ticket to the carnival's midnight show. As she waited in line, a young man approached her and introduced himself as Ric. He was the most attractive man that Jade had ever seen and as he struck up conversation with her, she realized that his personality was just as charming as his appearance. They ended up watching the show together- which ended up being more amazing than Jade could have imagined it to be, although she was mostly focusing on Ric.

After it ended, Jade thanked him for his company but before she could leave, he revealed that he owned the carnival and would love to hire her as an on-staff nurse. She already had a job at a local hospital and the idea of changing her life in a single moment was frightening, so she politely declined. In response to her rejection, he proposed to her. Right then and there, two hours or so after they had met, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. It sounds crazy, right? What's even more crazy is that she said yes.

That was when her life as a normal person ended and now she had done the same thing to two new kids. Jade tried to reason with herself, remembering that both kids had no real home and would always be safe while they were with the carnival. Still, she felt guilty.

A knock on the door brought Jade out of her thoughts and she groaned, not wanting to have to return to the carnival at the moment. She wasn't in the mood to deal with screaming children and even more so, the new performers. As she got up and opened the door, she found Kaylee in the doorway with a plate of food. In an already emotional mood, she wasn't eager to spend time with the girl she had given birth to but was basically forced to harm on a daily basis, but she was hungry.

Jade took the plate from Kaylee, smiling as she examined the food. She grabbed a plastic fork from one of the cabinets and returned to the door. It would have been easier to invite Kaylee inside so she could sit and eat while the girl said whatever she needed to say, but Ric was very particular about never allowing any of the performers in their trailer, besides the new kids when they took the pills for the first time as they had earlier. Instead, she locked the door behind her and began slowly walking towards the carnival. She held the plate with one hand and ate the food with the other.

"Can I help you with something?" she asked skeptically in between bites, heading towards some of the picnic tables that were placed by the food vendors.

Lucas turned back to Alexa and playfully flipped her off when she called him a killjoy. He knew that Matthaus and Brooke's bantering was mostly joking around but in such close quarters, their problems always seemed to get other people involved and being Brooke's boyfriend meant that he had more of a reason to get involved than some of the others. Besides that, he didn't want Catalina kicking them all out before he could finish his food.

Matthaus pulled his arm back to a normal length after Lucas stepped off of it and seemed annoyed that he had gotten involved since he supposedly was "not perverting". Before Luke could respond, the bathroom door swung open and Brooke appeared. When it was clear that she wasn't actually showering, he stepped aside. Matthaus asked Brooke directly about something going missing and although Luke wanted to think that Brooke didn't have something to do with it, he was almost positive that she did. He knew that Brooke didn't need any extra support, especially if she had taken something, so he smirked at her, mouthed 'good luck' and sat back down. By the time that Luke had returned to his plate, Matthaus had already moved on from the missing thread and was talking to Jace, who surprisingly gave him a rhyming response.

"You want me to go check on her?" Lucas asked Catalina, nodding his head towards the door. He could tell that Cat was apprehensive about letting Kaylee out of her sight, especially when it involved Jade. "I'm sure Brooke wouldn't mind coming with me," he added sarcastically.

There was an extended period of silence after Ryder asked Gracen where he was born. For a moment, Ryder was unsure if the boy had even heard his question but when he glanced over at him, ready to repeat it, the boy suddenly spoke up. He explained that he was from New Jersey but had lived in different homes for most of his life.

"Foster care?" Ryder asked after the boy finished speaking. He knew all too well what the life of a foster child entailed and if Gracen had also been part of the system, he figured that it could be something to relate to him with. "I was born and raised in Florida. Mom put me into the system right after I was born so I bounced around a lot too," he said, directing Gracen to the boy's bus. He continued to talk as they approached it. "That's one of the good things about life here though. You know you've got a home for life."

He opened the door to the boy's bus and allowed Gracen to enter first before following up behind him. "So this is where us guys live. You've got the kitchen over here," he said, pointing to the kitchenette area as they moved farther into the bus. "Over here's the bunks where Luke, Arkhan and I stay, and there's the bathroom," he said, pushing open the door to the small bathroom. "In the back there's another bed and the bigger bathroom with a shower. Matthaus has got the king bed right now. We're supposed to switch every few months to make it fair but between you and me, I wouldn't sleep in that bed after that guy if you paid me," he added with a grin.

Turning around, he headed back towards the front of the bus. "Looks like you've got the pullout," Ryder said, motioning to the couch. "Jade should have some stuff for you, you know, clothes and stuff, so we can check that out in a little too." He looked around, pretty sure that he had covered everything to do with the bus. "We really don't spend too much time in here. Catalina, the Hispanic chick, makes killer food so a lot of us are spend most of our time over there. The girls are all pretty nice. I mean, Brooke can be a bitch sometimes but she's dating Luke and she's usually alright when they're together. Alexa's really cool and then there's Kaylee. She's fifteen... probably around your age, right?"

Ryder realized that he was talking a lot but he wanted to make sure he covered as much as possible. Gracen seemed like a quiet kid and Ryder didn't know if he was the type to ask questions, even if he did have them. "You feel any different yet?" he then asked, motioning for the boy to follow him back outside of the bus. He knew that with most of the performers, it took a few days for the full effects of the pills to start showing. Still, Ryder guessed that by tonight Gracen would be able to make at least parts of his limbs invisible. Although Jade had never specified whether she was going to tell Gracen about the true reason for the pills, Ryder just assumed that she had and that Gracen knew what he would soon be capable of doing.

Matthaus happened to have just stuffed another mouthful of food in his mouth as Catalina responded in her typical threatening manner. He stifled a chuckle until he was able to swallow. "Oh Catalina, it means a lot that you would go through so much effort as to ruin your amazing dishes just to get rid of me." He gave a quirky smirk and another chuckle.

But then the subject was lost, as Matthaus had moved on to figuring out who this new member was.

"A woman of poetry!! Matthaus exclaimed, standing up from his seat and raising a hand in the air, considering the other one was still holding his plate. "Where have you been all my life!" His smile was bigger than ever and he let out a loud laugh. He quickly set his plate down and held out his boney hand,"It a pleasure to meet you Jace and it's a honor to have you here. I'm Matthaus." He continued to grin. "You have no idea how tiring it is to have everyone simply roll their eyes at my poems and riddles." If Jace did shake his hand, he would give a fairly strange one at that. His hands were soft, and apparently gentle. The frail structure seeming as if it would simply break if one did touch it. But his shake was rather firm and cold. "In other words, I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys a good rhyme."

He sat down once again, stabbing his food with a fork, then looking back at Alexa. "You're her mentor, correct? What are you going to show her first?" There was so much to tell and explain that he figured it was hard to choose.

He would have figured the pill was a good place to start, but that could be overwhelming and ruin the whole rest of the tour. But then again, other than just a quick lap around where the trailers and work tents were, there wasn't a whole lot that one couldn't figure out on their own. But he supposed it helped to have someone guide you. Having that one comfortable relationship with someone when you're new is important.

Matthaus remembered his first friend at the carnival.

Alexa Woodrow

Alexa had pretty much zoned out. With all the actions going on in the bus, Alexa usually just liked to sit back and watch and only get involved when she needed to. But soon her attention was brought back by the Jace girl shrugging in reply to her question before she went on to answer Matthaus with a rhyme. Alexa sighed and started tapping her chin absent-mindedly, trying to think of things she could show Jace, or how she might get around talking to her about the effect of the pills. It seemed Matthaus was thinking the same because after he ha finished gushing over Jace's little rhyme and bullying Catalina about her cooking, he turned to her and spoke.

Now Alexa had even less time to think, so she quickly blurted out her words, making them up as she went,"Yeah, I'm supposed to look after her. And well I was just thinking she'd like to hang around for a while, get comfortable with the atmosphere.." Alexa shrugged a little bit and then turned to glance at Matthaus and gave him a smirk, "And us" she added before pausing again to look over to Jace, addressing her now instead of Matthaus, "Unless you wanna jump straight into the action and learn about your powers? I can help you with them but it'll take some time before you're able to perform in the show.." she gave a friendly smile to cover up the cringe of pain on her face as she remembered back to Brooke's training, and how she merely escaped an icy coffin.

Jace giggled at Matthaus' excitement about her rhyming back, taking his hand for a shake or two. She was known to have a fairly strong handshake, she was taught that is how you showed people that you meant business in whatever is going on. It was fun to see that at least everything wasn't all work hard around here, thats what she had left when she started traveling away from home. Ah aint much in tha duhpartmen bu ah do like tryin ya know? She let go of Matthaus' hand, pretty sure that he was much stronger than he looked, and well he did have the same thing goin on as someone from one of her favourite shows. She liked him a lot and she could see herself becoming friends with the weird and friendly bard. Alexa seemed to wake out of whatever daydream she seemed to be in when Matthaus turned to ask her questions, that had to do with Jace actually.

Turns out that Alexa was going to show her the ropes, which is nice since she looked like reasonable folk and would know what needed to be known and what didnt. The two seemed to be very close as well but then again all of the people here had to live with each other so it isnt that strange, even if everyone acted like theyve known each other for years longer than they should. Ah actually am rully comfy round all y'all. Back home ah had a handfula siblins maself an its nice ta have tha feelin again! Ah would love ta look round the place an start workin soon. Gotta say though darlin ah dont know what yer talkin bout on the powers. If ya mean skills ah dont really have any unless ya count huntin. Ahm steel tryin ta figir out how ah got hired here this mornin.

Kaylee followed Jade to the carnival picnic tables. Most of them were occupied and for the moment that they sat in silent, Kaylee studied a dad and his two young daughters who were sitting at the table next to them. The dad was working on cutting chicken fingers into smaller pieces while the two blonde toddlers admired the big stuffed bears that Kaylee assumed they had won from one of the carnival games. They looked so happy and Kaylee was surprised with herself for feeling angry at the girls. She knew that it wasn't their fault that they had a father and she didn't, but it still didn't seem fair.

After Jade ate a few bites of the food she looked over at Kaylee and asked what she could help her with. "Well..." Kaylee began, trying to decide where to start. "Alexa said that those new people got good powers and I don't think it's fair that I still just have my color changing one and not a real one yet. Like, I've been here for fifteen years and they haven't. Besides, that girl talks like a redneck so she's probably going to be really annoying," Kaylee complained, instinctively crossing her arms over her chest. Her eyes darted back to the young family next to them and her unhappiness seemed to escalate as another complaint crossed her mind. "And Brooke has had the big bed for like ever and that's not fair either because I've been here longer than her and I've never got to have the big bed yet."

Although Kaylee knew that it wasn't smart to rant to Jade about the carnival life, Kaylee always seemed to cross the boundaries and provoke Jade purposely. It was as if she just instinctively felt like she was supposed to rebel against her and as a child, Kaylee was able to get away with a lot more than she could now. Catalina used to be more vocal about Jade mistreating the others and Kaylee could cower behind Cat if she ever got into trouble with Jade. However, lately Jade had been snapping on her for even minor things and there wasn't much that even Catalina could do.

Brooke looked over at Alexa as she finished speaking and laughed. "You're remembering when you first started training me aren't you?" As she said this Brooke walked over to her bed quickly. As Lucas offers to leave to get Kali Brooke frowns a little but doesn't say anything as she climbs up onto the bed and reaches towards the wooden cabinet there. Looking around to make sure no one's paying too much attention to her Brooke steps a little closer to the cabinet, blocking the view of the contents as she reaches in carefully and pulls out two spools of thread, one purple and one black. Jumping a few inches off the bed Brooke crosses her legs and lands in the center of it sitting. She then tosses the spools towards Matthaus effortlessly, pretty sure her aim had been spot on. Watching the two spools she noticed they weren't quite going to make I onto the table Brooke lurched forward, her hand flying out and a bowl made out of ice suddenly appeared below the two. Slowly lowering her hand the bowl lowered at about the same pace and landed next to Matthaus on the table. Letting out a sigh she dropped her hand and looked nervously around the bus to see who all had caught her blunder.

Alexa Woodrow

Brooke's remark made Alexa laugh, probably louder than she should do, and she leaned across the table to look over into Brooke's room, where she had just plopped onto her bed with her legs crossed. Before Alexa could open her mouth again to reply to Brooke, two spools of thread and a formation of ice in the shape of a bowl landed on the table, making her blink a bit but the shock quickly wore off; after all she was used to the abnormalities of the carnival, nothing much surprised her anymore; but there was still a few oddities that left her speechless even now - however Brooke's ice wasn't one of them. Once the ice and thread throwing had calmed and Brooke seemed to say no more, Alexa peeked around the corner once more and called out, "So long as you don't freeze Jace, I might let you practice with us at some point" the reply was truly a joke, but the more she thought into it, practicing with Brooke and Jace wouldn't be such a bad idea. But first she had to find out what Jace was capable of; "Pssh. You'll see about those powers once I get you to practicing." Alexa smiled and winked to Jace after she had finished talking, then stood up and scooted out of the booth-seats to head towards the trailer door, opening it once she got there and standing by it obediently like a butler, "So, coming with?" she'd smile again, realizing now that the Jace girl wasn't offended by slightly-over-the-top level of friendly ness.

Once (and if) they got outside, Alexa would pull the bus door closed behind Jace and hop off of the three-step footstool which was placed down for easier access into each of the buses. Now outside, Alexa's voice was a little more hushed; the buses were for the performers only, so there was no secrets to hide about the carnival but outside the buses, on the carnival grounds, no-one knew the truth behind The Midnight Carnival and all of it's acts - that's why Jade made it abruptly clear that they should never use their powers in plain sight of anyone,"Now, you see, that pill Jade gave you isn't just medicine to calm your nerves, like she may have said it would, it's the contract which binds you to this place. It means you will be a performer here at the carnival, for as long as you'll ever live."Alexa hoped the information she had just un-loaded on they newbie wasn't too much, but Jace looked the kind of girl who could take that kind of shock and still be standing straight afterwards. Alexa continued, trying to lighten up the conversation so it wouldn't seem so serious, "Part of that contract is huge benefits for us performers. The pills give us powers, and that's how we perform. It also makes us pretty much immortal, we never age so we can keep performing here for years on end, or until we die." Alexa smirked to herself, thinking how death wasn't exactly a problem for her, she practically was immortal, though of course Jade could easily kill her off by taking away her pills, but Alexa tried not to think too much about her one weakness."So, do you get it?" Alexa asked the girl excitedly, sounding like a child who had just told her friends of the most amazing fantasy world she had just discovered,"You've got powers now, just like all of us! I've just got to help you unlock them." Alexa jumped a ittle on spot, now truly very excited, it had been a while sicne she was a mentor to anybody, and Jace seemed happy to tolerate Alexa's behaviour, so she felt nothing could possibly go wrong if she let a little of her self shine through already.

Effort was all that Matthaus cared about. It didn't matter what you accomplished and it didn't matter what it was you were doing, as long as there was effort, Matthaus was happy. So Jace's comment on her trying brought an even bigger smile to his face. "Well that's all that really matters in the end. Glad to have you join the team." It was nice to have someone who tried a different thing every now and then. But then again... it was kinda weird.

Matthaus' eyes wandered around the table as he thought about it. The circus was all about new and strange things. Having new acts, costumes every show. Yet it was all monotonous. They never really did anything different. How is it that someone new who doesn't even know their power still change so much in so little time?

Now wasn't the time to philosophize, however. He wanted to know as much about what Alexa and Jace were going to do before they vanish for the rest of the day.

Shoving the fork full of food into his mouth as he listened to Alexa's hasty response, Matthaus couldn't help but nod and try to swallow his food fast enough to respond. "Yes, of course. I didn't mean right now, of course, I just meant in general." He gave a quick smirk before glancing at Jace and taking another bite of food. "It doesn't take as long as every says it will." He was quick to add after he swallowed his next bite. "If you stay on Jade's good side and you practice your ability and gain control, you'll be in the show in no time." But then he started to chuckle,"Assuming it's possible to get on Jade's good side."

He returned to his food, separating a small section of food to scoop up onto his fork and plunging it into his mouth. Jace then described that this new situation wasn't extremely overwhelming, at least in a social sense, which was actually a very large leap in the process."That's good." He nodded, flicking his hair away from his face and food. "I know most people who meet us see us a hard to get along with so it's good that you already feel at home." Well, depending on her definition of home he supposed. "Your partner didn't appear to have as much confidence as you do." The poor kid. He seemed so terrified. "I hardly said five words to him and he was already stuttering." Which surprisingly wasn't all too uncommon for Matthaus.

"But the powers isn't a huge deal. We'll ease you into them. Alexa will do a good job of explaining it all. Right Alexa?" He raised an eyebrow and smirked towards the healer. But he quickly started to laugh. "Of course she will. She always does."

Matthaus had almost forgot about Brooke lingering in the back of the van given the commotion up by the door. He would have remembered eventually to get his thread but at the moment, his mind had lost track of it. But Brooke made a point to give them to him, tossing them across the RV and over to him. They came up just short, and Matthaus leaned forward to catch them, but a sudden burst of coolness grazed his fingers. He jerked his hand back with a sort of yelp in surprise.

But it was just one of Brooke's little ice sculptures. Suppose she wanted to correct herself. His lips curled into a small smile,"Thank you Brooke." He took the two spools from the bowl, raising an eyebrow at her with his signature grin.

But he needed to finish his food. Without further ado, He picked up his fork again and began to finish off his plate

At Alexa proposal to train with the newbie Brooke smirked and shook her head. "Yeah, no thanks." Returning the thread to Matthaus Brooke laughed when he yelped at the touch of ice on his skin. After Alexa and Jace left the trailer Brooke suddenly became silent as she stared across the trailer at the closed door. After checking one more time that no one was looking at the cabinet above her bed Brooke rose and headed towards the door. "I'm going for a walk. I'll see you all at practice." Without waiting for a response Brooke left and, seeing Alexa and Jace heading off in one direction she went the opposite way, glaring straight ahead at nothing, hoping her sour demeanor would keep the carnivals guests from bothering her.

Re: The Midnight Carnival

I'm back! I went without means of the internet for a while so I couldn't communicate with y'all but now I'm back! And I'm not dead! And I hope this RP isn't because I wanna do some rp D:

Re: The Midnight Carnival

Um..... Maybe we should pm everyone and see if we can get any of them to post.

Re: The Midnight Carnival

That's okay. I mean, if we continue then the characters who are still here will eventually interact with themselves so we do have more to go off of.

I know I just posted, but since no one else seems to be here, do you think I should post again?

Re: The Midnight Carnival

I agree but my posts might be shorter with less to work off of.

Re: The Midnight Carnival

Soooo, since it seems like everyone seems to be waiting on someone else who hasn't responded yet, do you guys think it fair for us to continue on a bit until they get back? Because it's either wait for however long until they come back, if the come back, or continue and have the person catch up if they do return.

I'm not trying to leave anyone behind, honestly, I just don't want this rp to die. :(

Re: The Midnight Carnival

Whoooooaaa, that was the worst cold I ever had in my life.

I am soooooo sorry you guys. I got awfully sick and I was not able to hardly get out of bed let alone got online and write. I am just getting over it so I am extremely sorry for the sudden poof. But if anyone else is still here I'm back. :)

Re: The Midnight Carnival

I just thought that the other guys needed to post before I did

Re: The Midnight Carnival

Oh!! Okay. ^_^ That scared me. I haven't seen any activity or anything and no one was responding so I thought you guys all left. ^_^" I'm glad someone is here though

Re: The Midnight Carnival

I'm here! Just grounded.

Re: The Midnight Carnival

:( Guys? Anyone there?

*looks into the nothingness*

Re: The Midnight Carnival

I'm still here Collapse! Just had some technical difficulties is all. Hopefully I won't have anymore for a while so I should be good to go.

Re: The Midnight Carnival

Wow, I'm so sorry for disappearing guys. Is everyone still interested in participating in this? If you could post or PM me to let me know, that would be great so I can figure out whether we need to find new people or not before we keep going.

Re: The Midnight Carnival

*Cries*

I'm sorry you guys!! I ended up needing to get another computer! T-T The new computer I got didn't like RPG so I wasn't able to get on and tell you guys or post or anything! I'll post right now though, I promise! This computer is much better!

Re: The Midnight Carnival

Apologies if I post late/not at all for this week, I have like three huge essays to do and I need to get them done soon so I'll probably be too pooped out to write much at all.

Re: The Midnight Carnival

Sorry I still haven't posted, really busy and no internet at home still. to be honest I haven't even finished writing my first post yet. I don't want to drop out of this, but it might be more worth your while to find somebody who would be more able to post regularily.
