Ada's Story

Suddenly, a small portal opened in the corner of Gambit's bar, releasing a small wave of blackened energy. Stepping from its maw came a slender girl with pitch black hair to match her equally dark eyes, contrasted only by her pale white skin sheathed in a pure white summery dress. Stepping into the tavern, once her entire body emerged from the portal, it instantly closed back upon itself and blinked out of sight.

The demoness cast her gaze about the empty room and an odd look flickered across her face. Was she happy or angered that there were no mortals here to toy with? Perhaps a bit of both.

Ada felt a sinister grin flicker across her features as she sensed another presence in the bar, Xvander, but as she turned her eyes towards the man a new emotion invaded her senses. Curiosity. Her large black eyes stayed trained on the stranger for a moment as she searched his essence, his aura and came to the conclusion that he wasn't quite what he appeared to be.

A new toy? An ally? A glorious sparring partner?

Stepping towards him, she decided to play with the idea that she was at least semi-normal while she 'felt out' the other creature's intentions. So she didn't flicker across the room faster than the eye could blink as she normally did. Instead, she walked as a human would walk, one slow and sensual step at a time with the barest swing of her hips. "It is a slow night in this bar. Sad. I was hoping it would be more lively." The faintest of smirks crossed her lips as she walked passed the man, letting her delicate fingers dance across the nearest touchscreen as she ordered a decidedly human drink.

Ada caught the slightest shift in color on Xvander's forearm, causing her eyes to narrow as she studied him closer. Definitely not a human she decided as she changed her path, moving around the soldiers with a practiced grace though to the truly keen eye she would appear to stalk the men like a jungle cat stalking its prey.

"Gentleman, gentleman, no need for hostilities..." she purred, lacing her voice with a bit of magic to enhance their willingness to listen. "You have had enough fighting, I'm sure. Perhaps it is time to wind down, let loose." She swept a hand across one of the Corporal's shoulders, letting it travel across his back in a non-threatening manner as she walked to the other side of the elongated bar, perching on a barstool as her own drink was presented to her.

Ada lifted her glass of cognac to her lips, barely feeling the inevitable burn of the liquor as it coursed down her throat. Part of her was disappointed that there was no violence erupting in the bar but on the other hand, she was intrigued by this man with the deeply hued veins. Though he didn't look her way, she knew that he was aware of her presence and she cast her gaze down upon the man's exposed forearm, searching for clues.

"Do you frequently try to buy your way out of such hostilities?" She inquired of the man, a single eyebrow arched as she set her glass back onto the countertop. For a second, her fingers clasped reflexively around the glass as if she were holding some sort of response back.

Ada laughed, a brief but melodious sound. At the very least, this creature was entertaining, whatever he might be. The man closed his eyes briefly, inciting her curiosity once more. He had a predatory look about him but was willing to drop his shields so close to her? Really? She didn't believe it for one second.

Testing his reaction, she gave the appearance of being overly flirtatious as she used a fingertip to lightly trace along his forearm, almost directly curving its path along one of his veins. A way to see how this game would play out if he realized that she had seen a part of his secret. Would it create chaos or would he reveal himself to her? Or would he simply turn tail and run? You never knew with such actions and that was part of the fun of testing people's limitations. "Ah but you could turn them upon one another. Sort of a... survival of the fittest experiment. It's not quite as fun when they have weaponry but...." She gave a slightly shrug of her shoulders before smirking, "Humans need that extra advantage, don't they?"

Ada kept the smirk upon her lips as he reopened his eyes and almost delicately lifted her hand from his arm. A sensitive topic? He hadn't admitted to anything as he brushed his lips across her knuckles and the statement that he made about his family could be taken in many ways. A group of aggressive overachievers or a race that overtook whole civilizations. She had seen both, in varying degrees of intensity.

As she retracted her hand from his grasp, she allowed her fingertips to sweep across his palm, her magic probing the blood vessels that were closest to his skin for even the smallest clue that would help her reveal his identity. "A pleasure, Xvander Price. You may call me Ada," she left it at that, a seductive laugh following her introduction as she hoped he wouldn't ask for a surname since she had never had one and lying was such a pain. "So what brings a man to Gambit's? I cannot comprehend what you would care to 'want' here."

Ada grinned as he opened the way for a more honest form of conversation. Games were fun but her curiosity was overwhelming so she was glad that he had made the first move. "Ah, I couldn't imagine what type of office you would inhabit." She dropped her gaze, letting it sweep over the man once more as she tried to peg his race and his intent. He had made no violent or malicious inferences thus far and she assumed that he was quite the dangerous predator so he would have by now, if he intended to do so. Her brief scan of his blood had indicated only three things: it was toxic, inhuman and very, very potent.

"Ah, it is like looking into a mirror then, is it not? Your form is easy on the eye, your blood is very potent but not laced with any form of magic. I have never seen your kind before." It was an easy admission now that she held neither fear nor worry about the man in front of her and she reached over to her glass, taking a long and slow sip of her cognac.

Ada leaned forward, resting both of her elbows against the counter as she rested her chin on the backs of her hands. "Your people, hmmmm?" She practically purred, lacing the smallest amount of magic into the sound to see its effect on the man. He had sensed her magic already but could he differentiate what type of magic was used or where it was directed? The demoness was quite amused. Usually her playthings were human and thus, boring or too easily manipulated. Only on occasion has she stumbled across someone worthy of even the slightest amount of respect.

"So the form is not your own, this bit of information you will allow but you don't give any more details on your 'people'?" Her tone inflected amusement and she added a bit of coercive magic into her intonation, willing him to divulge more about himself.

Ada returned his grin, her spine set in a manner that showed she was obviously unwilling to back down. "Ahhh, you make it sound as if death is a possibility for my kind." She winked at him, letting him have a small hint of her own nature in return. Her eyes drifted to his hands as they tapped rhythmically on his glass, noting that his nails were elongating, very much like her own could do and his veins pulsed that deep black color once more.

What a fun game!

As if her eyes weren't already proof of her inhuman traits, she opened her mouth, letting him watch her teeth morph into jagged points and her canines become fangs. She wasn't a vampire, no, there were too many of those in this world already. No, she was pure demon though it was quite a puzzle to put together for someone that had not seen her create a portal into the bar or summon any minions out of thin air.

Ada grinned at his reaction, finally having inspired something more than coy wordplay. As she curved her head around so that she could whisper in his ear in return, her deviously delicate lips danced mere millimeters from his skin as she replied. "Ahh, do not tease me so, Xvander. I doubt either of us fully know what we're getting in to but I wish to prolong this game." With the soft words being spoken, seductive yet without even a hint of magic threaded through them, she pushed herself lightly off of her stool so that she stood upon the floor.

With smooth, graceful movements, she lifted her half-full glass of cognac to her lips and took the rest of the burning liquor in one swift gulp then set the glass back on the counter with a loud -thud-. "Until next time, Xvander Price. I bid you good fortune and hope that whatever you are searching for falls easily into your grasp." Tilting her head back slightly as she laughed, she lifted a hand to her lips, pressing a kiss against her fingertips and blowing it towards the creature as she parted. Ada shimmered into existence right inside of Gambit's Storeroom and she peeked her head around the corner of the doorway leading into the bar. Something felt... different tonight. A different group of patrons, no doubt, but some of them held the lingering taste of her own kind- demon. The scent made her curious and she swept her large black eyes from person to person until they finally settled on two people arguing to the side of the room. One looked demonic but didn't smell of the fire and brimstone related to her kind and the other, a man, looked mostly human but held the heavy intoxicating taste of kindred blood.

Sensing hostility, she arched a brow, intrigued, but wandered into the bar anyway. There were no doubt other play things in the bar and she didn't care to lose out on a night's worth of entertainment. Swaying her hips slightly as she walked, she crossed along the back of the bar until she reached a touchscreen menu and she tapped in an order for a glass of cognac. It was a mortal drink but it had a nice bite to it and it burned as it coursed down her throat.

Ada snatched up her glass of cognac as it was presented to her by one of the automated servants, kicking it back in one shot. The rich amber-hued liquid burned going down her throat but that obviously much of a worry to her. Neither was the alcohol content since very few demons had a slow enough metabolism to even enjoy such frivolities. Dropped the emptied glass back upon the table, she spun around on her seat, allowing her eyes to wander from patron to patron, sizing them up, judging them, determining who would be the most fun to antagonize.

The Night Fury? Demons always set her teeth on edge, perhaps that came from being devoured by one a century or two ago but she didn't quite want to die that way ever again. Even though this Night Fury seemed smaller than the last she had seen. There was a human man speaking to the girl that appeared demonic but both of them seemed frail, nervous. It wouldn't be entirely amusing to make someone faint, now would it?

As her gaze continues to make its sweep across the bar, it fell on a mage hiding behind at least two protection spells and the sight of the enchantments alone caused her lips to curve into an almost feral smile. Pushing herself off of her stool, she stalked towards the mage like a jungle cat approaching its prey and stopped just inches short of the invisible sphere surrounding him. She held up a hand and let her eyes meet the mage's as she let her fingertips caress lightly over the outside of his spell. "Scared, mage?" She said, not bothering to lace her tone with any hints of magic yet since the shield around him would probably just whisk away its intent.

Ada hid her grin of amusement exceptionally well and added a slightly dramatic sigh just for the fun of it. True, he wasn't the 'type' of creature that she was used to playing with but since the entertaining gentleman from the night before was nowhere to be found... She would take what she could get. Circling the man and judging his defenses he found them surprisinly well crafted. "How do you know that you're not exactly what I am looking for, Mage?" A teasing prod, a verbal sparring match. "How do you know that I have not come to offer you knowledge beyond all imagination in return for a bit of your soul, hmmm? Isn't that what your kind always thinks of when they think of demons?"

She kept her hand held aloft, lightly testing the invisible barrier around the wizard as she kept circling in her slow and steady pace.

Ada laughed, threading the sound with the slightest hint of magic out of habit rather than intent.
"hope not;
Ever to see the sky again. I come To take you to the other shore across, Into eternal darkness, there to dwell In fierce heat and in ice."
She continued his quotation, honestly surprised.

"Usually people quote scripture at me, old man. I believe you are the first to recite Dante in my presence." The laughter died down and a slow smirk crept back upon her ruby lips as she eyed the Wizard for a moment more, the smallest hint of amusement evident in her otherwise emotionless eyes. In her peripheral vision, she caught sight of the man from the night before, Xvander who was much more entertaining to mess with and quite honestly less of a hassle to approach. Perhaps if this wizard every came to the bar again she would try her luck but for now, he seemed quite content to read his dusty tome and utterly ignore her while wrapped in his cocoon of safety.

"I have other things to offer a man such as yourself, if you ever care to inquire, Wizard. Humans last... How many years before they perish?" She let the question hang in the air for a moment before she winked at the mage and spun on her heel. When faced with mortality, magic users were more likely to turn to the sweet whispered offerings of her kind than any other creature. Without appearing too eager, she made her way back to the bar, sliding into a seat next to Xvander and ignoring him momentarily as she pressed in another order for a cognac.

Ada turns her face towards Xvander, giving him an appreciative once over before responding. "Compliments will get you everywhere, Xvander Price." A soft chuckle followed the statement and she threaded her laughter with magic once more, testing his limitations and resistances. The previous night her magical suggestions had seemed to bounce off of him, flow over him but not actually penetrate his defenses so she pumped up the volume, so to speak. She had fed well before coming to the bar tonight and her energy level was at an all time high so she used the excess energy to infuse most every word that would drip from her lips in this conversation.

"I have never seen you before but now twice in just as many nights?" Both brows raised in playful curiosity and she turned away just long enough to accept her cognac from the bartender before returning her attentions to Xvander.

Ada laughed at Xvander's offer to leave. He was toying with her just as much as she was toying with him, that much was obvious. Yet that brought forth the question of his race and origin once more. He was predatory, intelligent and quick witted. Yet he didn't seem to want to bring her harm either. The man wasn't a demon, she would have sensed it if he was and he wasn't a devil either. Demons and devils mixed about as well as oil and water... or perhaps a more fitting comparison would be fuel and fire.

Turning her unusual eyes towards Xvander, she brought another smile upon her lips and shook her head. "If I didn't wish to see you, I wouldn't be sitting beside you. Take that as you'd like." She let her gaze drop to his forearms, looking for the appearance of blackened veins. 'And the man I was having fun with was a shielded Wizard. Not so much fun to play with someone that you can't touch, now is it?"

Ada looks down at the wrist that is extended towards her and pauses all movement for the briefest moment. Her breath stills and her eyes stay focused on Xvander's arm as her predatory nature fights for dominance and she feels her teeth elongate slightly behind closed lips. Giving herself a moment before responding verbally, she rests her hand underneath his forearm as if helping him hold it aloft before she uses a single fingertip from her other hand to trace lightly along his inner wrist. "Ahh, see in my own observations I have found them to be quite different depending on the species." Her eyes raised to his as a more feral grin crossed her lips.

"Humans are a skittish lot and seem to protect every fragile piece of their body." She could feel the thrumming pulse of his blood beneath his skin but knew from her investigation the previous night that his blood was toxic, a most intriguing hindrance. "But then again, we're not exactly human, are we?"

Ada tilted her head slightly to one side as she studied Xvander's face, her raven black locks falling across her shoulder. It was obvious that she had pegged the man as someone entertaining, someone fun to play with to ease her boredom. After quite a few centuries of existence it was getting harder and harder for her to be amused but this man seemed to catch her attention not just on this night but the previous night as well.

She ran her the tip of her tongue lightly across her lower lip, allowing his hand to intertwine with her own. A predatory smile crossed his lips which she mirrored easily, unfazed and slightly enticed by his wolfish countenance. He had once again evaded her inquiries but she would continue to test and tease anyway. "Ahh, so then what are we?" Her eyes glittered mischeviously.

Ada felt one corner of her lip upturn slightly. Ahhh, so he wants to continue playing games.. she thought to herself, allowing him to draw her closer. Predator vs. predator- usually a dangerous game but with underlying tones of desire this teasing relationship could end one of two ways, both of them containing the possibilities of violence though that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. She leaned forward, as if to press her lips to his but milliseconds before their mouths would touch she shimmered out of existence, teleporting so that she was standing behind him instead.

It was obvious that they both considered themselves at the 'top of the food chain' so perhaps this power of hers would prove a surprise to him. Laughing softly, she pressed herself against his back as she let her mouth near his ear, whispering, "It's been a pleasure, once more, Xvander Price, but I'm afraid I must go for the night." After speaking, she once more blinked out of existence, soft laughter left behind as she teleported herself back to Hell.

Ada shimmered into existence mere inches from the counter, obviously not caring who saw her entrance as she lifted one of the touchscreen menus and scrolled through the program to order her usual- a glass of cognac. As she awaited her order, she turned slightly to one side, laying her right forearm against the edge of the bar and her black eyes travelled from patron to patron. Not many of them appeared to be entertaining, at least not in the way she desired. One woman looked sickly, a soldier emitting pheromones was chatting up a rather leggy looking mage and there was some sort of odd monkey man perched upon the counter itself.

Turning back to fully face the bar, the demoness made a slight face as she pulled herself up onto a barstool to await her drink. She despised boredom even more than she despised clerics and the faint threads of monotony were already starting to invade her senses. Where were the entertaining people?

Ada senses Xvander even before he enters the bar and her eyebrow arches silently. Something is different. Usually he has an almost human-like aura. In fact, the first night she had met him she had simply assumed he was one of those augmented humans, super powered, supernormal, whatever in the world they called themselves nowadays. Though when she had scanned his blood, she knew that he was something quite different from a human. She just hadn't figured out what he was... Yet.

As Xvander sat down beside her, she turned her head, glancing over him for a moment without showing any surprise at his drink of choice tonight. He did, indeed, seem.. dangerous. Different. And it made her pause before making a teasing comment. "Cognac isn't to your taste anymore?" She asked with a hint of a smirk, reaching over to pluck her own drink from the server's tray as it rolled towards her.

Narrowing her gaze at the man, Ada tenses briefly as she senses his aura expanding from his own body to encompass her and she remains still until she feels it retract once more. Her piercing black eyes try to meet his, though his gaze is hidden by his sunglasses, and when she sees the same blackened veins at the very edge of his eyewear her brow furrows. "What happened?" Is all that she asks, a rather hollow tone affecting her voice. She had come here for excitement, entertainment, but this? She didn't even know what -this- was. Was he dying? He certainly sounded like it.

Ada kept her countenance rather neutral which was surprising given the tidbits of information that he was providing for her. There were very few species that had access to any sort of self-induced evolution and she was honest enough to admit that she had no idea which creatures they were. She didn't have to understand them as foes because those species usually veered away from demons and she didn't have to study them as potential allies because they were so predatory in nature that they rarely worked together.

Lifting her hand slowly, she reached out to lightly touch the corner of his eye that was visible beside the edge of the sunglasses, trying to sense what was happening through touch rather than sight. "What realization and what...." she paused, her fingertip making contact with the papery skin above one of the blackened veins, "Sort of evolution are you trying to induce?"

Ada laughed. A sudden, abrupt sound that held no actual joy or amusement but something more along the lines of incredulity. The sudden, vice-like grip on her wrist didn't phase her, she had died a hundred or more times before and though the pain was always present, she knew that should anything happen to her she would just reappear in hell. Time and time again she had battled clerics, holy men or simple do-gooders looking to rid the world of demons and after the first dozen times she had stopped trying to waste her breath explaining to them that their attempts were in vain.

But Xvander? What possible reason would he have to harm her? "So you foresee us battling in the future, hmmm?" Her eyes scanned his face and though her tone held a slight teasing tone her jaw was set as she clenched her teeth.
