When the pair emerged on the opposite side of the portal, they were in a rather familiar location. Safely away from Flavaar manor, the Hidden Glen stretched away from them in all of its moon-lit glory. Aiden unceremoniously shoved the elf away from himself, watching her stumble a step before whirling around to face him.

Her eyes widened with surprise, shock, but there wasn't any fear there. Not yet at least.

The man bent, withdrawing two shortened scimitars from the length of his boots, crossing them over his chest before glaring at the elf.

"Defend yourself." he said darkly, his eyes glowing blue as he uncrossed the blades with the sound of metal scraping on metal, and swinging for the woman.

"She is moving, is she not?" Aiden replied in a quick snap towards Caitus. "Rather than staying locked away in her room, succumbing to grief. You two may not know this, but inabilities to persevere over broken hearts is a death sentence even for the immortal." His accusing glare shifted to Avia.

"And yet here you are."

"There's no telling the time." Aiden's anger seemed to melt a little, in light of the concern that contorted his features. "But she does not plan on playing fair or being kind, and while your intentions are noble, in the end it is going to be Lumierre and her mother alone."

"Train her." the man replied. "Bring her back to her roots, her capabilities. I'm willing to bet she hasn't been in touch with Rhakhan since she arrived in that decrepit manor."

Lumierre grasped Caitus' wrist gently, her other hand resting on the top of his arm. He was rigid. She made no move to soothe him, just simply let him know she was there. She would never admit that she was afraid...but the truth was that she was.

"Well I certainly wasn't going to be invited in the doorway, and I'm almost positive that this one here," he gestured to Caitus, "Wouldn't let me within an arm's length. I have my reasons for the ways I operate."

"And if we're lucky, we have a few weeks."

"So what am I supposed to do then?" Lumi asked, her hand still resting on Caitus' arm. Aiden gave her a look.

"We're going to train away from the manor."

The man lifted a brow, ignoring Lumierre's half-hidden smile as he crossed his thick arms firmly over his chest to look at the slender, scantily clad woman. He took a breath through his nose, considering this, then glanced sideways toward the man.

"Very well. If the young man wishes to observe, he can do so, but..." he glared at him, Lumi, then finally at Avia, "If there is any interference that I do not approve of, the deal is off, understood?"

He didn't wait for a response. "Lumierre. We meet here tomorrow morning at predawn."

Interesting how a man could completely negate the usefulness of a door.

Aiden simply appeared just inside the doorway to Gambits, his hand running over his stubbled chin as he worked his jaw. He appeared a bit...beaten up? Not necessarily bedraggled, just..roughened up around the edges, as if someone had given him a run for his money.

Indeed, it appeared as if his student had finally been picking up on some of her old skills, and was able to hold her own in combat. A good thing, definitely worth smiling about. But Aiden, being who he was, didn't really smile all that often.

He glanced to Zaria, immediately noticing the wound on her neck before he returned his attention to the ground in front of him, slowly making his way over to the counter, at a distance from the woman so that he might place an order without risking her coming too close. He had this... thing about personal space.

"What did you drink?" the man replied, wrinkling his nose slightly as he glanced back toward Avia. "And simply because I taught an elf doesn't mean that I hold myself to their moral standings, but it's cute that you've made such an educated assessment of my personality traits. Quite clever, if I do say so myself." He shrugged in an effort to get her away from him, turning so that he could better face her without craning his neck.

Mm. He was going to have a problem with this.

"Did you want something?" Anything, if it meant putting her in the chair and not practically in his lap.

"I'm a mixed breed." Aiden replied, his eyes slightly narrowed. He didn't back away, but he was determined to intervene if she insisted upon closing the distance between the two of them.

"I've actually been meaning to ask you about Lumierre," he began, lifting a hand to wave away the smoke from the quellazaire. "How she came by a friendship with a lady as charming as yourself..."

"For what, exactly, am I seeking forgiveness?" he replied with a lifted brow. "Startling Lumierre? Do you see how she's improved? She's growing stronger, and regardless of what you or anyone else thinks, I know her far better than the rest of you lot."

He looked away from her. "I know how to get the real Lumierre out of her shell."

"Think so?" he replied with a suddenly wicked smile. "Naturally you'd think that way. Someone who wasn't born with the ability wouldn't have any idea how much of a challenge it is to harness it." He tilted his head to the side.

"But of course, physical training is no small feat, as well as the psychological training it takes to get into the mindset of murder." He was glaring now. "So tell me, Mistress Morality, how do you propose I prepare Lumierre to face the one person she is most terrified of? Coddling and meaningless words of reassurance?"

"As far as you know." Aiden replied simply, though now, his tone wasn't even remotely snide. His eyes reflected concern.

"She's so vehemently against murder of any kind because she still struggles with the first time she ever had to do it, almost thirty years ago." He took a moment, waiting for that one to sink in.

"Only if you promise never to speak of this to her." Aiden replied quietly, resting his hands on his knees before tilting his chin to his chest and closing his eyes. The markings on his face twitched as he worked his jaw, a furrow coming to his brow as he recalled that awful day when the young lady had come up to him in a state.

"It was her mother's doing," he explained quietly. "There was a time in Lumi's life when her mother refused to allow her to speak with others. She used many different tactics in order to frighten her daughter into silence, giving her pets which she would then force the girl to kill with magic, and eventually insisting that, as punishment, a man was supposed to die too."

He seemed pained, as if sharing these secrets were a physical burden for him. "Promises were made if the deed were to be completed, promises and threats. And this man was no small person either. He was the current leader of an old rebellion. Driselda had a plan in the works, and unfortunately Lumierre became the scapegoat. For a long while, she blotted it from her memory. She still does to some extent."

He sighed.

"I have to make her remember it again."

Aiden seemed a little surprised, but not unpleasantly so. For a little while, he'd combatted his own feelings for Lumierre, finally coming to terms with the fact that she was never going to be anything more for him than a younger sister, perhaps even a daughter figure. He hoped that she'd find someone who would be as vehemently protective of her as he was himself. He'd seen that in Caitus, even though they both knew that Aiden could have beaten the man with a hand tied behind his back.

It was apparent that Aiden had respect for the man.

"Will he know to stay out of the conflict when the time comes?" he asked of Avia. "He seems to be quite defensive of her."

"It's a relief to hear." he replied with a small smile. "And so long as it doesn't pain you, call me Aiden. Or anything other than my formal title." He glanced to her, then to the counter, the smile progressively widening.

"Lumierre knows that I love her more than anyone else in the world. She understands what I'm doing. It's why she was willing to do it in the first place."

The man seemed to awaken from a trance while sitting at the bar counter. He blinked, looking down at the surface that he'd just lifted his head from, and furrowed his brow in confusion. Was there a mark on his forehead? He lifted his hand to investigate, grimacing slightly as he felt the dent in his forehead. Ah, well, had he fallen asleep on his conversation partner? He was almost positive that she would rip him a new one for that.

Then again, perhaps she wouldn't notice in the least.

"Ah, er, where were we?" he querried. "Lumierre, right..."

He watched Lumi, thankful that she'd removed the drunken woman away from his shoulder, and given him an opportunity to breath air that wasn't permeated by Avia's rancid breath. That, and he allowed himself a chance to marvel at the way she was mothering Avia, even though it was quite plain that the other woman had done this intentionally to herself.

How many times had this happened in the past? What precisely had the two of them gone through in order to draw them so closely together like this? What was it that Lumi saw in Avia anyway?

He sighed, leaning his elbow on the counter as he closed his eyes and shook his head. He'd have to talk to Lumi about all of this later on. He didn't think he would ever begin to understand the way that woman thought.

Mm, help what?

Aiden blinked his eyes open, exhaustion dulling his gaze as he glared pointedly at Lumierre. If she intended to have him carry Avia all the way back to Flavaar manor...yet, even as he allowed himself the thought, the look in the elf's silver eyes melted his argument, and he gave her a grudging nod of ascent.

The things he did for that girl, really.

"And you shouldn't be wandering around by yourself at night." Aiden said simply. "It's concerning."

The man watched, wordlessly standing and taking Avia into his arms before walking out of the bar with her. Lumi followed, and the trio made their exit before anyone of importance would notice.

"I tried teaching Lumierre how to use a sword, but she's far more fond of her staff, and truth be told, she's gotten to such a proficient level with her magic that the staff on its own has proven to be far more dangerous than a blade." Aiden glanced back to Lumierre, who merely kept her eyes on the snow, her cheeks coloring slightly.

"I was caught between two worlds. My own, and the world you see here. Training with a variety of weapons became a necessity to survive. Say, Drakus, at some point do you think you'd mind sparring with me?" THe fact that the man had a cane didn't seem to affect Aiden. He'd fought creatures with no arms and still had trouble subduing them.

The man shrugged. Drakus' denial did nothing to affect his relatively cheerful, if not somber mood. "Mostly with her." he gestured to Lumierre. "Have you seen her fight? Truly fight? It's quite impressive. She's finally beginning to defeat me in our combat sessions again. She'll be ready for her mother in no time at all."

Lumi, again, said nothing, though her lips pursed slightly, her brow wrinkling in thought.
