Allison Lang's Story

Officer Allison Lang walked into the diner with a tired look in her eyes. She had just finished her daily patrol shift, and with nothing interesting having happened, she was rather bored. She had left her police dog back home with her husband, insisting that pets, even if they were police issue, weren't allowed here.

She sat at the counter and ordered a coffee, before she pulled out her phone and stifled a yawn.

Of course there were other people within the diner, many variations. Then again the entire of Wing City seemed like a magical or scientific crossroads. You could literally find anyone in this place if you searched hard enough. This of course would highlight the fact that figure clad in ancient victorian diving suit although little more lithe was sat away, she appeared to be shaking clutching in her thick bronze gloves a picture, a photo. A closer look would show a woman with ivory hair smiling with another person dressed in a cop's uniform her arm around the other woman. It was a shopping mall type image, from those photobooths. Quiet, very faint sobbing could be heard, from the figure, her helmet drowning out most of the noise. On her shoulders was a very ragged WCPD jacket, on her shoulder was the insignia with her name, Officer McCarthy.

It appear ancient and state this figure was clad in what appeared to be a diving suit brought more questions to the fore. Everything about her appeared miserable, in fact it was hard to tell what her expression was, only a red glow lit up her visor on the helmet, the helmet which like the rest of the ensemble likely weighed a great deal. Yet she held it up and appeared to be able to handle what most her size and proportions would rarely be able to carry.

Officer Lang walked down the sidewalk with a tired look in her eyes. Having just gotten off duty, she wore civilian clothes, but had her sidearm at her hip, as well as her badge, and her partner, a Belgian Malinois named Roy. Upon seeing Kaitlynn, and another figure, the two quickened their pace.

"Roy, afliggen," she commanded, and the dog sat. "Everything alright here?"

One one hand, there was a crazy man in plate armor asking her to help him with a quest. On the other, there was a dog. She stared at him. demons were fun to fight, and she did have a weird kind of sacred duty. But there was a dog. Dogs were, frankly, ten times better. She smiled at the dog happily. "Yeah, my friend's just popped off the map again. I don't know what up with him though. I'm not sure I want to know. Can I pet your dog?"

Gary seemed more than slightly miffed at this. Getting brushed off by a fellow hunter. "I thought we paladins called each other allies no matter what. But if some freaking DOG is more important than our holy mission to eradicate demons from this plane, go ahead."

He threw his helmet on the ground with a loud CLANG, revealing white hair and a salt and pepper beard. Blue eyes conveyed his holy wrath at Kaitlynn. "Though I suppose we can and should work with the secular authorities. Greetings, Officer. I am Father Gary Mandolera...is this your animal companion? I seek assistance on my holy quest to slay a demon."

"In the order presented, yes, you can pet him, and yes, this is my dog. We're both sworn into service for Wing City PD, even if he isn't, by law, an officer," Allison blinked and thought for a moment. "Did you say demon? Heh....I think we may have a similar goal."

"Okay, so first, dude, not a paladin. Never a paladin. Mystical duty to kick demon butt, yes. Paladin, no." The woman wanted to be very clear on that. Religious orders were one hundred percent lame. She wasn't going to be bound by one. Molly's weird pseud religiousness was bad enough.

"Second...who's a cute puppy, you are, yes you are!" Kaitlynn has a severe weakness to fluffy animals, and given she was now on her knees scratching behind the dog's ears, cooing to the dog. It was a bit of a weakness. "And yes, demons are evil, let's kill all the demons and so forth." She commented blandly before she turned her attention back to the dog.

"Truly splendid," Gary coughed as he continued taking off his armor piece by piece, trying to clean out all of the goop. "The demon I seek is of dark hair, medium build, catlike yellow eyes. Last seen wearing a tailored three-piece suit and a fedora, may have partial armor. Wears a dueling sword. He was assisted by a redhead. From the way she picked him up and ran after I struck a decisive blow, she must be demonic as well. The two have hid out near the eastern gate, but traps abound. Whatever unholy union they have forged, we must put an end to it."

"Sounds like a friendly kind of guy. I'm looking for someone else, though. Nolan Fredrickson, a dealer of supernatural artifacts, as well as a drug runner. Suffice to say he dabbles in quite a bit of...well..everything. Where's the last place you saw your demon buddy, mister Paladin guy?" Allison asked as she handed Kaitlyn a treat to give to Roy.

Kaitlyn cheerfully gave said treat to Roy. "I'm just looking for a friend. She's a hunter like me, but with a minor possession problem." Minor. Kaitlyn would take care of it. She smiled slightly and shook her head. "Super tall, name of Molly Bronson. Likes reading and punching." Two very odd habits to have, but Molly was hardly a normal person. "Sources say she works with a special branch of the FBI or the Police. it's been awhile, so we're out of touch."

"Well. It seems we're each chasing different marks. But if we joined forces, perhaps we could in turn catch those that elude us when we work alone. What dost thou say, brave warriors? For surely there is no nobler purpose than to dedicate your body and soul to stemming the tide of cruelty and injustice, as both of you clearly do!"

He seemed a bit out of touch, to say the least, but at least he looked old enough to excuse the anachronisms. But his heart was clearly in the right place, as evidenced by what looked like priestly vestments under the slime-covered metal coat.

"So.....are we gonna sit around here and exchange notes? Or do you have a plan?" Allison asked noone in particular. "I need to know whether or not to report this as an off duty investigation or not."

"Yeah, don't report Molly as an off duty one." She said quickly. "I like not getting my lights knocked out." Not being punched was a wonderful thing. The young woman smiled.

"But you two can work together. I can find Molls on my own. It won't be too hard. I'll just follow the trail of sheerly improbable events." Was he seriously saying dost? She was not working with anyone who said dost. Still, the woman continued to pet Roy. Dogs were so much better than people.

Vercerigo walked through the doors, quickly scanning all he saw as he headed directly toward the bartender. He noted the sad looking diver and frowned. He wondered whether he should try and help.
He sat down, gestured to a bartender and said, "Sir, I'll have a glass of pinot noir if you have it. Tell me, have you seen a young lady by the name of Alice Raine?"

"Very well, then. Let's leave the one that answers to her canine friend to her duties." Gary projected a bit of his ki to make this next part of his pitch more persuasive to Kaitlyn. "If you like, perhaps I will help you in your manhunt first, and after your target is neutralized we'll go after mine. I could use the experience to get stronger and smarter for my rematch. Justice will prevail in that den of misogyny he calls home..."

The young officer's cell phone rang, and she picked it up and listened to the call. "Roger that. I'll get suited up, five mikes," she looked at the paladin with a sigh. "Emergency, I have to go. I wish you well."

The officer disappeared, before another young woman walked across the street, a staff on her back, and a rather elegant, though somewhat revealing, outfit on. Her hair was long, and changed from black to a bright blue at the tips. She walked with confidence, with just the right amount of naivety to hint at her youth. The woman stopped in front of the two.

"Hello, I could not help but overhear your predicament? Odette Bellerose, of Meridian Isle. Can I help you out? I always did fancy an adventure!" She smiled and looked at the paladin innocently. "Besides, a Paladin like yourself might be strong, but you can't possibly work alone."

Allison stared at the figure that sat a few seats down from her, and upon noticing the WCPD shield, smirked. "Mind if I sit with you?" She asked as she walked over to the rather unusually dressed person.

It took a few seconds before a voice, small and sad sounding escaped her suit, "You are welcome to sit anywhere... although I can't promise I will be amazing company..." her hands lifted up revealing bronze guantlet's like the rest of her costume. Nonetheless those hands gripped the helmet and slowly tugged at the fittings of the helmet. Once pried loose she lift it off completely revealing a woman with raven blonde hair and eyes with an almost ethereal sapphire to them, seeming almost unreal or even dream-like. Nonetheless those eyes displayed wetness, visibly announcing tears, combined with her facial expression. There was an almost melancholy to her, something akin to a dream.

Lifting a mug she took a sip of her conconction before speaking, "E... E... Elizabeth McCarthy... Wi...W...W...---" before she could finish her composure collapsed and she burst into tears, the other guantlet gripping, no clinging to the photo. Now near enough, it was possible to see the other woman was different to Elizabeth... but they both appeared to be cops. Still as she sobbed now loudly, drawing attention from the diner.

Before when she cried her helmet had muffled those sounds, but now the waitress looked utterly shocked and approached over, with softness in her smile, "Honey, what is up? Perhaps you would love some of our pie. I promise it would bring smile to your lips?" hearing no answer, she turned to Allison, "Hun, what will you have? We have a lovely menu, just you ask and Ronald can cook it up no doubt dear."

Allison sat down next to Elizabeth, in an attempt to possibly comfort her if it came to it, judging from the girl's mental state. She sighed, and looked at her phone. I'm not a shrink, nor a negotiator.... Allison then looked at the waitress. "Oh, yes ma'am, I'll take a coffee black, and some flapjacks, if you can."

She then looked at the young lady. "Are you going to be okay, officer? I'm not from around here, but I can tell another officer in a heartbeat....though having the jacket certainly didn't hurt," she chuckled and pulled out her wallet, which showed her badge as Andesia Metropolitan Police Department.

The raven haired woman looked up, her eyes moist. The tears trickling down her face in great quantity as she sniffled and tried to speak but instead sobs erupted out of her. After a few breath where she took three deep breaths, she finally could speak, "I wish... I... wish..." again she broke down, but this time she forced herself to calm down, despite how difficult it was, "My name is Elizabeth McCarthy of Wing City Police Department. I am sorry I am not great company, but I am suffering grief." again a long deep breath to keep her composure, "I am not great company, if you feel that is an issue... I... I... suggest you leave..." it was polite but it was clear as she immediately collapsed under the strain of her sadness in tears again, sobbing and sniffling her face a mess of snot and tears.

The waitress meanwhile ignored this and nodded to Allison, "Hun, I shall bring them right up, just give me ten minutes... I'll also bring tissues for your friend..." with that she walked off back behind the counter and began to boil a fresh pot while sticking the order on a spike.

Allison, short on ideas, good or bad, decided the best course of action was to put a hand on the girl's shoulder. With a sigh, she continued. "I can't imagine what you're going through, but I'm not one to leave a fellow officer down in the dumps. So, if you're feeling ready, tell me what's up, and I'll gladly help as best as I can, okay?"

Another moment passed. "I'll even pay for your food if you're hungry. Alright?"

Once more Elizabeth tried to control her emotions taking long deep breaths before starting to speak, "It is complicated, well to be frank most of my life is like that. I guess it is best to explain what I am. Even that in itself is complicated... but it does help clarify questions..." though not visibly sobbing she seemed to be trying very hard to keep the composure, "I am not of this time or this place, I am rather instead or was formally a School Teacher in an underwater paradise named Rapture... Well Paradise is a loose term. It was meant to be a place without the authority of Communism the overreach of Government and the arm of the Papacy. A place where someone could innovate without being judged or held back by ethics. You can imagine this would lead to problems, but well it seemed too good to be true..."

Pausing she began reciting the speech everyone would hear upon entering Rapture, "Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? "No" says the man in Washington, "it belongs to the poor"... "Noo" says the man in the Vatican, "it belongs to God"... "No" says the man in Moscow, "it belongs to everyone." I... rejected those answers, instead, I chose something different. I chose... RAPTURE." with that she would continue, "The founder was called Andrew Ryan... I was merely chosen to be part of this vision a young girl just out of University in Montana with my teaching degree. I was overjoyed... utterly overjoyed and when you saw it first time... Imagine just imagine the sheer beauty, a city underwater and so beyond compare... This is how all dreams begin... but yet you wonder how did I become like this, that comes later, for now this is merely the beginning of my tale..." Elizabeth barely managed to keep herself from breaking at that point, but still did, "I will admit what occurred was my fault and my stupid naivety, but there was more happiness before the eventual crushing despair."

"That's....certainly different, I'll be honest. We had something like that on my world, but it was a research facility, rather than some kind of paradise. I assume what happened there is why you're as sad as you are right now?" Allison frowned and looked at her phone, before she looked back at the young woman.

Continuing she nodded, "It is and it is not. Why I am upset now connected to another chance I had here. But that would be rushing the story, you need to understand everything fully..." as she spoke the waitress arrived with some tissues and what Allison had ordered seeming to smile, "First person to get her to talk sugar, we tried for days, anyway enjoy!" with that the waitress was off as Elizabeth continued, "There was no place like Rapture I can't even describe the utter beauty you saw, it is too difficult. Just believe me no place like this and to be a teacher to Rapture's future was an overwhelming privilege. Nay honour. And that itself was the beginning of everything." pausing she took a sip of her tea before going on, "Each class had a teaching assistant and normally this would not matter, but for what came next... I will confess something now, I am gay and or lesbian, but in Montana I had no idea, really seemed impossible, but being in Rapture freed me, I finally understood..."

Before she could continue she broke down in tears, clearly the next part of her story was difficult, for whatever reason. She just appeared utterly distraught again.
