Al'Quin

A jovial spirit, perhaps far too self-assured and bubbly at times. A bit of a dandy, a bit of a churl. It's shame he was not a bard or jester, but really, those positions never suited the Malui.

Description

Al'Quin is a Malui, and as such, his most defining features are those that his people share. Al'Quin, in particular is long and lean; athletically muscled- somewhere between a gymnast and a runner. If it weren't for the inherent grace of his movements, he might be considered 'lanky', for his boning is rather fine, for a male of any species. He stands at about six feet tall, and his loudest and most prominent feature is definitely his hair. In Malui, it starts out red at birth, and from adolescence on grows in a buttery gold, and then white, for the elders. As such, his hair is a shimmering blond fall that deepens to a warm orange, and settles in a sunset red towards the ends. The whole of the wild mane flows down to beneath the blades of his shoulders in twisting waves and ringlets that seem to catch any available light, and let it travel slowly down the strands like an inert fuse. It bounces and tosses when he runs and talks, a vibrant representation of his people and his almost corrosively warm personality.

Physically speaking, his eyes are expressive and round, set in large sockets. The irises are a bright teal, and overall, they look as full of life and vitality as the rest of him. Above, bold orange brows arch, thicker towards the center and tapering off. His cheekbones are high and wide, but not as dramatic as they could seem, for the boyish roundness to his bronze-y cheeks. As is common among Malui, the bridge of his nose arches from the brow, not dipping deeply between the eyes. Below, his mouth is a pleasing cherubic bow of a persimmon hue, the overall length between each soft corner perhaps a touch wider than ideal. Commonly sporting a single bit of polished stone or a feather, his ears are tapered to a point, angled back along his skull. Though adult Malui men do grow facial hair, Al'Quin appears to have never grown any, despite his maturity. He also is lacking horns, which, though not odd for a human, is a rather undesirable trait in a Malui.

His shoulders are broad in comparison to the size of his waist, thankfully letting him appear more obviously male than some of his other features, at a glance. A long neck leads down to the arch of his collarbones, and a nicely muscled torso. Along the center of his belly, from the navel down, gold hair brushes his skin in a thin trail, much the same color of the softer vellous hair that grazes his body, easier seen in sunlight than anything else. As far as limbs go, Malui are generally lack regular body hair, and at best, have fine, thin peachfuzz.

Long legs taper into elongated feet, sporting sharp, split hooves of a peachy color. They are more cervine than bovine, in appearance, and the two secondary toes, or 'dew claws' are thin and elongated, situated higher up towards the heel, and spreading the Malui's weight when landing or standing.

Al'Quin is a generally seen in one of two manners of dress. One being that which befits his position as royal courier, and one that reflects the tribal nature of his own society. In the cities, he is often seen in a deep purple waistcoat and thin linen shirtsleeves, with an embroidered messenger bag over his shoulder, and perhaps a strap carrying a few extra rolled sheafs at his thigh, fastened over knee-length breeches. On his off days, or at home, he wears naught but a sling of teal-dyed cloth (teal and orange being the color of his people, physically and politically speaking) on his hips, the fabric hanging from a belt of volcanic iron that always appears somewhat hot- having a dull, ruddy color. A heavy necklace of several strands of glassy beads hangs down over his chest, in blue, orange and black. Sometimes stiff, colorful feathers adorn his hair or sporran, but otherwise, there is not much more than this.

Personality

Absolutely frivolous. Al'Quin's personality cannot be squashed, stomped or rubbed the wrong way; well, without great displeasure or duress. He's like a cat that you just can't shoo. Flirtatious to a fault, loquacious and coy, he is generally adored by the townsfolk he visits, and absolutely hated by more reserved gentry. Al'Quin is willing to play the fool, if only to garner a smile. He always has something to say to every rebuttal, and his quick wit can be tiring when one just isn't in the same jovial mood that he is constantly in. Really, it's as if he never has a bad day, despite the fact that he's been running about in the heat from sun up to sun down. His words are flourished and melodic, and he's certainly a very ...animated young man, his expressions and gesticulations only serving to garnish his storytelling.

What's more, the mercurial courier is downright indomitable, and once he has his sights set on something or someone, he just cannot imagine his own failure. ...Unless, of course he up and decides that he doesn't care anymore, in which case he quickly moves on to something else.

His quick feet make up for the fact that when in towns, he spends about thirty percent of his time charming familiar dwellers with his winsome smile and colorful stories. However, he really is dedicated to his job, and his superiors have few real complaints.

Equipment

Al'Quin isn't really one for tools. Elbow grease? What on earth...? But he is commonly carrying a satchel full of orders, letters and missives, and perhaps a bit of fruit. Ah, and maybe a lyre.

History

Al'Quin's particular tribe of Malui live in and around the volcano known as Mt. Ehru. This geographical peak is in the center of a kingship known as Irchlasa, and the land is split near radially by large canyons, carved by rivers of blued lava. Each landmass is a city-state, the largest being Salmond. The Malui are employed as couriers because they are impervious to flame and the lava that seems from the mountain they call home, and it is they alone (along with the dragons) that can cross these crevices. Therefore, a great deal of Malui in any continent are generally couriers of some sort.

Al'Quin entered on a light, tapping step, grinning contentedly to himself as he strode in, hands behind his back, looking oh-so unaccountable. His large eyes rolled from left to right in a slow arc, taking in the miasma of faces that ranged from amorous to disinterested, mischievous to downright untrustworthy. But he passed no judgment and did not stare. He simply walked his way to a booth. His hair bounced with the drop and he crossed his ankles and clasped his hands the moment his butt touched the seat. And there, he settled with a content grin and just... watched.

Al'Quin covered his mouth with a kerchief for the dust outside, and then the impending stuffy smell of the bar. Oh, goodness it was crowded. Considering that, he really wanted to sit... but.... that person was dirty, that person looked mean, this one too young...too ..dead-looking. Mn. He was really starting to rethink his decision to stop here, in the first place.
