Annie Lira

A violinist and singer, Annie earns her keep performing in nightclubs and bars - she keeps clear of Gambit's as far as work goes, though. At least in other places if they don't like you they throw non-lethal objects.

Annie Lira

Name: Annie Lira
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Nationality: British
Significant Relations: Friend of Elmindreda Damodred and her family, her sister also lives in Wing City but the two don't see each other very often.

Height: 5' 4"
Weight: 126lbs
Overall Appearance: Annie is a good looking young woman, with a cheeky grin and a glint of mischief in her striking olive green eyes. Her light blonde hair falls in a stylishly messy bob down to her chin and the base of her neck, with a fringe that slightly covers her left eye. Her skin is fair and smooth, with few blemishes barring the odd spot (that she will promptly nuke with various chemical products). Relatively small in stature, Annie doesn't have a strong build, but she is slim and shapely. As far as make-up goes, Annie tends to wear a coat of lip gloss, subtle eyeliner and eyeshadow, but apart from that she isn't a fan - though she adores painting her nails. She wears a pair of simple gold earrings that dangle about a centimetre down, two rings on her right hand and a snazzy silver watch.

Personality: If Min is the (at least moderately) prim and proper one of her group of friends, then Annie is the one that pokes her in the ribs until she lets her hair down and has some fun. Annie is energetic and confident, not afraid to giggle away with the girls or pal about with the guys - friends are friends and laughs are laughs in her book, and she enjoys both of them. Annie has a good sense of humour, and shrugs off insults like a duck shrugs off rain - though she isn't hesitant about returning fire.

Skills and Talents:

  • A very talented singer, with a powerful voice.
  • An equally talented violinist, often combining this with her singing in her performances.
  • Annie has a surprisingly keen eye for quality, in jewellery, clothes, even food. Coming hand in hand with that is a sharp eye for a bargain.
  • A talented (if not particularly adventurous) cook.
  • Annie takes classes in kickboxing, and is capable in the use of it to defend herself, though she has little experience of it.
  • High octane situations happen more than once when you hang around with the heiress to an arms cartel, and whilst Annie by no means commands these situations with vigour, she is at least unlikely to have a panic attack.

Abilities:

  • Synesthesia: Whilst not an 'ability' as such, Annie sees music (and some noises) through vision as well as hearing it, largely through colours. This can be overwhelming if it kicks in, say, next to a busy road full of noisy traffic.

    Equipment:

    • Electric violin.
    • Can of Mace spray in her handbag.
    • A handbag, containing make-up, money, her phone, etc.

So begins...

"The bad guys do, though!" Annie noted, nodding. "Or at least, they try to. Drunk guys just smell rank and try to grope you. I'd rather have to knee a disoriented loser in the groin than deal with people with guns any day."

"You and me both..." Min rolled her eyes. "It gets tiresome."

"So I hear."

Min clicked her tongue. "My family are caught up in a lot of feuds. It's ridiculous and unnecessary, but a 'shoot on sight' culture has developed between a number of groups. It's like dressed up chavvy gang warfare."

Annie shook her head, she'd heard this - and experienced it - before.

"Officially, my family deals in security. Yeahh..." Min scowled, "In the vaguest way."

Min shook her head, "Believe me, it's in my interests to remove the vague aspect." she murmured. Her mother and (crucially) her father were not aware of her plans for the 'family business' when she succeeded them. They did not involve the plans they had at present. "But anyway..."

Annie smiled brightly and attempted to move the conversation along, "So, guys - tell us some more about the SIB!"

"Ohh, that's cool!" Annie grinned, "You're like the kind of people they make TV shows about! How accurate are those, anyway?"

Min raised an eyebrow, "I'm pretty sure it's like Casualty. Far more cinematic than the real thing."

"She sounds delightful. But I suppose you'd have to be that sort of tough nut to run something like that." Annie mused, smiling. "I've not had much experience with bosses. I guess that Skye is the closest, and he doesn't really 'boss' all that much."

Min scoffed, "Skye couldn't boss if he was given an instruction manual on it. You'll need a tougher manager when you go big time, and he knows it. It's not even his career."

Annie laughed "I know that, ha. We already have an agreement on that, actually, so ha."

"A bunch or workaholics, the lot of you." Annie decreed, smirking. "It all sounds very stressful, but in an exciting way. Apart from the paperwork."

"You never know. The boys and their boss might be avid fans of the stuff..." Min joked.

"Just like you're a fan of being slapped around with a metal pole, huh?"

"Okay, I have to do that, and I don't get slapped around! I'm quite good, actually."

"Quite good. So, you get slapped around. I have met Alanna, you know."

"Shut up."

Min raised an eyebrow, "He seemed like a perfectly nice young man when I met him visiting you, Iante." she commented, "But I suppose he was a little bit techie. I remember when I was at school we referred to the people in our IT department as 'the elves'. I wonder if that would fit him..."

Annie laughed, "Ahh, the elves. Staples little elves - Mr Staples was the head of the department, and the only one who seemed to have any awareness of life on the other side of the desk."

"Ah, I know the type." Min grinned, "Poor dear. I'm sure he's just a bit over-eager."

"Eager like your mother is a tightass, you mean?" Annie queried.

"God no. Nobody could be that eager. They'd freaking explode..."

The door of the barren bar was pushed open to admit a young woman, bag hooked over one arm. Her hands were occupied by her mobile, and her eyes directed down at its screen as she tapped away on the touchscreen. Annie made little note of the emptiness of the bar as she approached the counter and slid her bag onto it, sitting on a stool. She glanced up from her phone to smile to the bartender.

"A tea, please." she requested politely, unfolding a note from her purse and handing it over. The man nodded and slid the note into the register, returning the change and setting about getting the drink.

Only then did Annie notice how empty the bar was, blinking in surprise. "Huh. Slow day, is it?"

The celebrations for New Years were out in force, and first amongst the crowds were the young people of Wing City. Alcohol, short skirts despite the weather and dancing coloured the atmosphere where the students, graduates and youth in general went about the adrenaline fuelled process of having a damn good time.

Amongst them, one young woman was more than slightly stressed. "Goddammit, Min, why did I agree to this?"

Annie glared at her friend, though it wasn't the other girl's fault, as she stood outside a bar on Main Street adjusting her hair behind a canvas screen.

"Because you work here, and they asked you to." Min pointed out.

"While that is a valid point it is not the answer I wanted to hear!"

"I wish that there weren't so many people." Annie said, sighing.

Min rolled her eyes, "And you the one who wants to be a big star? There'll be a lot more people than this if you ever play at Wembley. You've got to dive in at the deep end. Well. Outside a bar in a rather obscure city isn't exactly the deep end, but there're certainly a lot of judgemental people around."

"Fine." Annie sighed again. "I'll wait for my cue, then... Though I really wish I was out getting drunk with everyone else, now."

"How do you think I feel?! I could be, if I wanted to. But I'm here instead 'cause you're a wuss." Min teased, elbowing her friend.

Outside, a employee of the bar wandered out of the building, glancing at his watch. A few moments later, he rolled his shoulders and hopped up the steps onto a stage-like platform set up outside the bar. Adjusting a microphone there, the man waved to the customers. "Hello everyone, and welcome to the All-Nighter at The Last Resort." the latter being the name of the bar, obviously.

The man folded his arms, "We have some great stuff lined up to welcome the new year in with you, local talent from comedians, dancers and musicians. Speaking of which..." the man glanced to his side, at the canvased off area, "I think we should kick things off by welcoming back a regular act here at the bar. Most of our regular customers probably know her, but for the benefit of the rest of you, I'd like to introduce to you the lovely Annie Lira!"

Min shoved Annie forwards, "Gogo!" she whispered encouragingly.

Annie gulped, and stepped out onto the stage, waving in response to the small but enthusiastic cheer from the bar's regulars.

"Thanks, guys." Annie said, taking the microphone from the bar worker with a nod. "I guess this is the biggest crowd I've performed before, whether or not they're all paying me any attention."

The singer gestured at the passing crowd with a half-smile, "So I won't beat about the bush any more. This is Autobiography, by Ashlee Simpson."

With the credit announced, Annie cued the music, and started singing. The writer hates writing singing, which begs the question why he made a singer, but it happened anyway.

In the meantime, Min wandered out from behind the canvas to take a free seat, which happened to be at William's table. The girl leant back in her seat and smiled encouragingly at her friend.

Linus Trucidabunt hopped casually off of the train when it pulled into the far busier station just outside of Wing City' Eastern Gates.

He signalled for Carmen to stay close, ignoring the sound of the city beyond the great gate as he prepared the ultimate beeline escape.
