Ariadne's black limousine rolled through the streets of Solinus City, it was on it's third lap around the city by now. Ariadne was taking in the sights. The Invictus were expanding and she didn't wait to jump on the chance to take lead on it. Having your name on everything was good publicity.

"I like it here. It's mostly clean. I just hope there's a local synagogue." The woman told the others seated in the limo with her, "What's the point of being Jewish if I can't use it to my advantage?" She asked.

"No point at all, Ms. Kale." One of her escorts said, "We need to find a nice salon too. Upscale. Once more around the city and then we'll hop back on our plane and go to Wing City." Ariadne said to her driver, "You got it, boss." The driver responded.

"I'll own this town one day." The Invictus higher-up mused, a wry grin finding it's home on her face.

Not a care in the world.

That was the best way to describe just how Ariadne felt right now. How she seemed to feel most days. She didn't have any worries, she didn't have any problems, everything was fine.

She sat in silence at an outdoor table at a cafe, paying no mind to the cold winter air. She'd been in worse conditions over the years. Her bodyguards stood close by, all of them large men with rather stoic expressions. If Ariadne was looking for scary men to take the job she had hit the jackpot.

"I thought I was supposed to be getting a coffee." She said aloud, but if any staff inside the cafe heard her they ignored her. Ariadne scoffed at the perceived slight.

"This must be a Wing City thing. Shitty service."

"Maybe the problem isn't the city, but your poor attitude," a middle aged and slightly overweight woman said as she set Ariadne's steaming cup of coffee down for her. The cold air left the steam all the thicker as it wafted upwards carrying with it the scent of freshly brewed coffee. "If you can't see that I have another six customers, and both of our two girls called in sick today."

The woman was the manager here, and truth be told she would have given a good tongue lashing had any of her employees spoken to a customer like that. At the moment though, she wouldn't mind the loss of a potential customer. The faint limp in her step spoke of the pain the cold weather was having on her knees, and that a customer expected service outdoors in this weather was irritation enough; never mind that she was manning the small cafe all by herself at the moment.

She was in a poor mood made all the poorer by the fact that she hadn't been able to get anyone in to help man the cafe on such short notice.

Ariadne looked at the watch on her wrist, then to the manager. But, the woman remained silent for a long while.

"Do you have a clock or anything?" Ariadne asked, "I want to know where you find the time to be a bitch instead of doing your job. My concern isn't how many customers you have, how much staff you don't have, it's me. I don't care, the sooner you realize that the sooner you can get back to work." The Jewish woman told the manager.

"That's assuming you still have a job, because I kind of feel like buying this space. Maybe I'll turn it into a salon. Or tear it down."

Ariadne sat outside of a cafe, eyes deep into a newspaper. Sometimes she just preferred the old way of doing things, gluing your face to a screen didn't seem very healthy. The Hebrew woman was silent when a server brought her a coffee, seemingly ignoring the people waiting on her. They weren't important as far as Ariadne was concerned.

"Okay." The woman said to herself, slipping a phone from her purse as it rested atop her table. The woman dialed in a number, bringing the phone up to her ear as she waited to be connected.

The call was to Ereb Industries, she wanted to speak with Gabriel Ereb personally, she hoped that whatever young, attractive secretary he had wasn't stupid enough not to listen to Ariadne. She didn't like to make a scene, but showing up in person and doing just that was always an option.

The elevator doors opened up, a woman wearing a heavily armored black paramilitary jumpsuit standing just outside of it. She was clearly waiting for Vena. "Come on." She said, gesturing for Vena to follow her.

The woman, who seemed ready for a fight, walked at a brisk pace down the hallways of the suite. She never once looked back to make sure Vena was close behind her. She seemed like she had a bad attitude or at least one that wasn't fit for escorting people.

"Here." She said, stopping at door at the end of one of the hallways. She pushed the door open, revealing three women already inside. Stryfe was seated behind her desk, an opened box of chocolates resting in front of her. One of the other women, donning black suit pants and a purple turtleneck, was leaned over the desk.

She was plucking up chocolates left and right to eat.

The last woman wore a black dress and stood just behind Stryfe, she seemed to be taking up the role of straight man amongst the group. Her expression serious, yet leaning towards no clear emotions.

"Chocolate?" Stryfe asked.

Vena looked around the room, taking it in briefly before striding forward. In the moment she glanced at the box of chocolates, the two other women, and then Stryfe. "I will try one if it pleases you", she said before taking a seat in front of the desk and opposite of the three women. Her helmet and pack were placed upon the polished marble floor.

If she was permitted to take a chocolate or if she was given one she would pop it into her mouth. The instant the delicacy touched her tongue a smile played across her pale lips before vanishing. "That should be illegal." Her legs crossed and she placed her hands upon her lap. "Apparently business on Terra is done with more finesse than I am used to."

"No, I just have a few... fans since I've become a public figure. Oh, how I long for the days when people had no idea that I existed." Stryfe said, grabbing a chocolate for herself.

"I'm Fatin Alfarsi. Behind me is Ariadne Kale, and the woman in purple is Mary Munroe. I have to wonder who you are and why you're here." Stryfe said to Vena, the armored woman who escorted Vena in shutting the office's door.

"They told me you were prepared to hand over a gold brick. That's strange to me. What are your intentions, miss?"

Vena leaned back in her seat. "Yes. We are prepared to hand over many gold bricks as it would not do to try and hand you interstellar credits. I am Vena Kenshi, an officer of CONCORD. You know that organization as the Varden.", she said and waited for a reaction.

"You have heard about the bombing of the Great Seto Bridge of Solinus Sea? It is all over the news. The Invictus do still do mercenary work?", she questioned.

"Yes, everyone seems to think you're behind the bombing." Stryfe said, raising an eyebrow. "Why exactly are you here looking to do business with us? You do know our official stance about working for people who commit crimes like that?" She asked Vena.

"I don't want to be a party to state sponsored terrorism, honestly." Stryfe told the woman, "Me either." Phinx, the purple clad woman, interjected. "We like to keep our hands relatively clean." Phinx continued.

"We were not behind the bombing though I am sure that statement holds no value to the other governments involved. The technology used in the bombing was of Ayenee origin and a ship of our design was used to perform the attack. We wish to hire Invictus to impartially investigate the bombing, record our own efforts to investigate the matter, impartially comment on that investigation, and report their findings to everyone that will listen. There will be full discloser."

She retrieved the gold bar. "Any payment received by Invictus for these services is for the time and effort expended. This is not a bribe. We would expect you to report any findings fairly and truthfully. We are aware that some may not listen to the truth if and when you do find it but we find ourselves wrapped in the red tape of bureaucracy and interstellar politics at home and abroad. We have a need to find the culprit or culprits just as others have a need to point their fingers. There is enough war in Ayenee. We would rather there not be more unnecessary deaths."

"This is like something out of a novel." Phinx said, "You hire us neutrals to investigate you and something you've been implicated in. Hopefully we don't end up trapped in a conspiracy against you or your enemies." Phinx continued.

"I think we should do it. Saito, Vetrano, the Wolfpack and the Veritas can handle it." Ariadne told Stryfe, "I don't fully trust this person, but let's see how it goes." Ariadne said, glancing from Vena to Phinx.

"Yeah, let's do it." Phinx said, giving her blessing.

"Okay." Stryfe finally said, "You have a deal. We'll put some people on it, talk to the proper people for clearance and... we'll get it done." She ensured Vena, reaching across the desk to shake the woman's hand.

Vena nodded but the smile she had worn had long since vanished. She firmly gripped Stryfe's hand and shook it. "We have an accord then. We do not expect you and your people to risk your lives for no profit. You and your people will be adequately compensated.", she said and released Stryfe's hand and placed the gold bar on the desk.

"One hundred times this sum will be delivered to you as the sun rises. You have the full support of the CONCORD's Council. It was after all Councilor John Rosenthal that requested Invictus to undertake this mission. Once you are finished with your investigation on world I am to provide you with a ship and a captain to pilot it along with a crew to document and broadcast for you any findings or messages you wish."

She grimaced. "I do not mean to say the space vessels of Terra are poorly piloted or that they are poorly designed but the distances that your people may need travel in search of the truth are vast, the space perilous", she said with some emphasis.

Her jaw clenched. "Councilor Rosenthal will be broadcasting an answer to the allegations that CONCORD was the organization that attacked the bridge in the morning. He will not be outlining Invictus's involvement in this investigation. You are free to reveal this at your leisure or if you can somehow remain anomalous and wish to do so then this is your prerogative", she said and then placed a device similar to a cell phone on top of the gold bar. "This device will allow you to reach Councilor Rosenthal directly. It is as secure as our technology allows us to make it."

She gave the other three women a shallow smile. "May I have one more of those chocolates before I go?"

"We have our own ways of getting around. And, using one of your ships and pilots could look bad as long as our impartial investigation is meant to be... impartial." Stryfe informed Vena, "We'll use one of our own vehicles and pilots. It'll be better for our image as a neutral party." She continued.

"Which we are." Phinx interjected, driving the point home that the Invictus wanted to work with their own people. They couldn't exactly trust the Varden, they were the ones who needed their name cleared. And they didn't trust that they'd be spied on using a foreign ship.

Healthy paranoia was the name of the game.

"Feel free to take a chocolate or two for the road." Stryfe said to Vena, pushing the nearly empty box of chocolates towards the woman. "We'll be in touch."

Vena took one of the chocolates. "Not one of our ships and not one of our pilots but someone we have already paid for the job. Someone familiar with our space, our cultures, our politics, and our technology. Perhaps you will understand once you speak with Councilor Rosenthal. You will at the very least need a guide. I doubt that this plot has roots within the Milky Way."

She bowed slightly as if acquiescing to the wishes of Stryfe and Phinx. "The Apparatus is already investigating the site here on Terra", she said before clenching her fist, brining it to her chest, and performing a short bow. "Alloway ." Vena then turned and left the way she had come.

While it wasn't her first, second, or third choice Ariadne found herself approaching the very restaurant Samuel was seated at. She wore a clean black dress and equally black high heels to match her black fingernails and dark lipstick. She walked with an air of confidence bordering on arrogance, confidently or arrogantly taking a seat at an empty table.

The big suited man standing out near the road clearly there to beat down anyone who got on Ariadne's bad side while she tried to enjoy her meal.

Ariadne grabbed a menu, grimacing at some of the food choice as she thumbed through it. She could go somewhere else, but she was hungry now and didn't really want to wait. She didn't want to be out in the cesspool that was Wing City for longer than she had to be.

"There has to be something... edible here."

By the time Ariadne showed up Samuel was already in the process of ordering his food, index finger darting all across the laminated menu as he pointed out every food he planned on scarfing down. Some of it was his old dishes but the majority were meals that had been added during his time away. With the fat wad of cash sitting in his pocket, he wasn't really concerned with prices.

He couldn't help but chuckle at the woman's reaction to the restaurant's food. "It's tastes a lot better than it looks, trust me." he smiled.

"First time eating here, huh?" Based on her formal attire, and the hulking man who accompanied her, she had to be of some importance; perhaps a politician, those types were common in Wing City.

Ariadne glanced over to Samuel, her gaze lingering for no more than a second before she gave the restarant's menu a second chance. Wing City wasn't her favorite place, so she natural rejected anything that came from it. But, maybe the man was onto something.

Not everything could be judge by appearance or the wretched hole it was based in.

"Yes. I tend not to dine out in places such as this I prefer white gloves and maitre'd." Ariadne answered,." A friend once said it was because I grew up wealthy that I can't appreciate... this. Whatever this is." The woman said, taking any chance she could to put down the little guy. There was a reason her colleagues had began to call her Wall Street.

Behind her back, of course.

"Well this little eatery is hardly white gloves status, but I can guarantee the food is just as tasty. Maybe even better!" he exclaimed with a smile. Of course it could be if he desired it. All it would take was a few strokes of his pencil and the scene could be transformed into anything he could imagine.

What was stopping him? Nothing really, but he knew better than that. Although he didn't have the rules of its application set in stone, he knew that using such a powerful ability in that manner would be irresponsible. He had bigger plans.

"It's important to enjoy the little things sometimes."

"You're a 'stop and smell the roses' kind of guy, aren't you?" Ariadne asked, standing slowly from her seat. The woman, menu in hand, approached Samuel. "You're different than some of the people I've been meeting here." She told him, seating herself across from him.

"Emphasis on some. You seem a little smug, but not entirely arrogant. You know how to speak to people, show restraint." Ariadne said to the man. "You're either a lawyer, a politician, or in the early stages of Hipsterism and you should be treated for whichever of those you have." The Jewish woman said to her new acquaintance with a slight smile.

"Ariadne Kale, deputy chairwoman with the Invictus." She said, extending a hand out to Samuel.
