Classified Archive Profile
Austin James Marshall is a Special Agent in the Terran Intelligence Bureau. He is Agent 317, callsign 'Vulpis'. He is primarily a field and reconnaissance agent with a mission-bias towards infiltration, extraction, assassination and counter-terrorism. At twenty-five years old, he is one of the youngest agents in the field. With over five successful missions under his belt, he is also one of the most renown.

Young Austin, receiving combat training under the TIB.

Agent Marshall was marked by a spotter at age eighteen when he was observed stealing an expensive necklace from a jeweler. When confronted by security, he succeeded in talking his way out of the situation until the stolen necklace fell out of his jacket. Marshall proceeded to incapacitate three security guards before fleeing the store. He was tracked and found living in an abandoned warehouse. After a struggle, he was detained by Agent 489 and was brought back to Veritas where he was recruited of his own consent. His training began almost immediately.

For the next seven years, Marshall mastered every level of field training, from basic to tactical. He studied the cultures and histories of both Terran countries and many intergalactic nations, becoming fluent in over a dozen languages. He completed every available course for weapon handling, from light firearms to heavy explosives. Under the TIB academia, he was schooled in chemistry, physics, biology, mechanical engineering, advanced calculus, paranormal studies, theater, kinesiology, botany, basic medicine and toxicology. Despite destroying many of the training cars, he was taught to drive a plethora of different vehicles, from motor automobiles to heavy transports and even to spacefaring vessels.

Marshall's past is hazy and unclear, mostly because the agent rarely speaks of it. He recognizes having a mother and brother in his youth. They lived in extreme poverty, and the mother eventually died of untreated syphilis. Austin and his brother, Edward, split ways and became stragglers. It was during this time that Austin developed exceptional thieving and stealth capabilities. He also learned how to fight hand-to-hand in the Israeli defense system of Krav Maga, learning from an old master in exchange for whatever liquor he'd managed to steal that day.

Austin suffers from a rare neurological disease: citofacin (cito - quick, facina - action), caused by a malfunction in the motor and sensory neurons in the brain. As the neurons release catecholamine neurotransmitters between synapses, the velocity at which the neurotransmitters move is accelerated beyond all normal human parameters. As a result, the lag-time between thought and action is shortened drastically. For persons suffering from citofacin, thought and action are one. Years of therapy have allowed Austin to train his "disease", focusing himself to prevent every passing thought from being completed as action, consciously choosing what he will or will not do. His condition also gives him a considerable edge on the field. Without any lag time between brain and trigger finger, Austin is an extremely capable fighter and gunman, his kinetic speed almost inhuman. Nonetheless, Austin still struggles to maintain complete control of his disease, failing frequently.

In terms of his character, Marshall is an optimist and an extrovert. He is a great lover of humor and sarcasm, never failing to find something that he might smile (or smirk) at. Although he has consistently shown great bravery and courage on the field, his valor often evolves into blatant recklessness, particularly when confronted with bleak or hopeless situations. He is a risk-taker and a daredevil; the more dire and desperate the objective, the more enjoyable it seems to become to him. A skilled orator and speaker, Austin craves society and the company of others. When left alone for extended periods of time, he has been known to talk to himself. His bright character seems to be a helpful tool for the agent when he is tasked with impersonating a character or acting out a role in his various assignments.

Despite this, Marshall has frequently demonstrated narcissistic behavior and overtly forward sexual tendencies. He flirts recklessly and without restraint and has had dozens of known public relationships, all of which lasted no longer then a month. His ego frequently clashes with other authorities on the field, and Marshall will often abandon a set-plan in favor of a direction or course that he deems more effective. Despite his obvious tactical success on every mission he has been sent on, Marshall has been suspended from duty three times, detained four times and brought up on charges of sexual harassment twelves times.

"No..." Austin shook his head, offering her a warm smile, "...I guess it wasn't my major." The agent's eyes softened as he took another glance back at the picture. Austin could never understand how much the smiling, light-hearted people in that photograph meant to Drulovic. He was never close to his own mother. He never looked his father in the eye. But he did know something about family. His brother hadn't taught him much, but he taught him how to smile; a skill Austin had never forgotten as long as he had lived.

"...there are bad people in the world, Director," Austin said calmly, knowingly, "...villians that do horrible things, often for no true reason at all. I'm sure you know that better then anyone else. That's why you're here. That's why we're here. To protect Terra." Austin nodded. These were the virtues that convinced Austin to join the TIB in the first place. "To protect people like them." He nodded back at the picture of Drulovic's parents.

Austin Marshal was quite speechless for about five seconds after Drulovic had spoken. What? Just...what? When did they leave the grave, delicate subject of her parents being murdered to talk about the fragrance of cherry trees? For the first time in his life, Austin found himself with reason to question some part of Drulovic's sanity. Perhaps talking about such a personal topic wasn't good for her. Perhaps she actually just wanted to change the topic. Austin just wasn't sure anymore.

"I-...I've never been to Washington," Austin stammered, "Wing City doesn't have many trees, besides the Gardens. I don't go there very often."

"I'm not sure if I believe in God," Austin answered plainly, looking down at his thumbs, "Eddie was strict Catholic. Took me to church a few times, even." The agent grinned. "He always punched me square in the jaw whenever I fell asleep. Happened a lot."

"But..." Austin shrugged, "...if there is a 'good and loving' God, then I like to think that he wouldn't let bad things happen without having some greater purpose for it all."

Austin Marshal nodded, "well it's definitely one of your more explicit photographs," Austin confessed, "but it says a lot for what it is." The agent leaned back in his chair, grinning a bit as he made another quick sweep-through of all the pictures with his eyes.

"...which do you like the best?" he asked.

Austin Marshal grinned, admiring the photo, "not half as bad as I do in the morning." He laughed quietly, looking from face to face across the photo. "Do you remember anything about them?" he asked curiously.

"That's awful, Director..." Austin winced, "...but I don't mind hearing about it. Life isn't all fun and games, and I guess you would know that better then anyone else." The agent looked away briefly, gathering his thoughs. "Eddie and I made a boat load of good memories together, though. I leaned everything I know about Wing City from that that kid. Most of it wasn't good advice, but..."" Austins voice trailed off into laughter.

"I imagine you dearly treasured any time you had wth your sister," Austin considered, "though I admit I am fortunate. I wouldn't be half the person I am today without Eddie." Austin nodded back to Drulovic. "Surely you had someone special though, Director. "Some special friend to help you through your tough times?"

Austin Marshal shrugged, mulling over her words carefully. Austin supposed that Eddie was his best friend. He had had a few close acquaintances throughout the years, but no one he could ever call as close as his own brother.

"Maybe so, Director," Austin nodded, "but I think that, 'in this business', trusting people is just as important as knowing who to trust. Who can you trust better then your friends?" Austin furrowed his brows, looking about himself briefly. "They say that love is a pretty strong bond, and with it comes loyalty."

Austin Marshal smiled, believing that Drulovic was obviously referring to her recent divorce. So far as the agent could recall, he had not even once discussed the topic of the Director's former husband. Not so much as a passing word of gossip with his fellow agents.

"My brother always told me," Austin grinned as he remembered, "that true love is like a 'circle'. 'A circle', he said. No ending...just keeps goin' round and roung." Austin chuckled a bit. "He said mom loved us like a circle. Even if she was gone, the circle wasn't. He said God loved us like a circle, too."

Austin leaned forward then, his forearms resting on his knees. "I haven't loved much, Director. I think I've really only ever loved one person. But I'm inclined to believe him. Love just doesn't...end. Ever. I can't ever imagine not-loving my brother..."

Austin Marshal nodded. "I'm sorry, Director." Austin said, unsure what else to say. Austin usually wasn't one to engage in 'philisophical' discussions of the sort. He always hated Socratic seminar in high school.

"By the way, Director," Austin asked, a note of boyish curiosity in his voice, "...you wouldn't happen to have any assignments you've been waiting to give me since I've been absent, would you?"

"Shaw..." Austin muttered under his breath. He knew the name well. "Police reports say she was last seen in Gambit's. You think there's any chance she's still on-world?"

"Just a word?" Austin grinned, rising quietly from his seat. "Well I'll get right on it, Director. I think I'll start by paying the WCPD a quick visit. A local detective was one of the last to have words with her, I believe."

Austin Marshal nodded, giving her a quick play-salute from the top of his brow. "I'm glad I came. It's good to be back, Director." He meant every word.

Austin Marshal was at Drulovic's side, his hand buttoning his jacket in the cool breeze. He looked about himself carefully and cautiously, never straying far from the Director.

Austin Marshal watched curiously, raising a wary eyebrow as the formalities were made. Although the agent's face bore emotion, it was difficult to read. He took a good long look at Roslin, noting the hesitation in her voice. His youthful eyes eventually found Helene Chaska, lingering on the Aschen Minster of Defense for some time. Other then what was communicated in his careful glares, Austin said nothing.

Austin Marshal entered hastily, his vigilant eyes quickly noting each figure in the room as he smiled apologetically. In his right hand he gripped a blank file stuffed with papers.

"Sorry for interupting," Austin nodded briefly to the Scatterans before looking back towards Drulovic, "...you asked me to notify you if I had an update on the Ming project? I went through some files. It's kind of important."

"You as well, Mr. Daylon," Austin nodded as he received the hand firmly, careful to call the Scatteran by his last name. Austin looked back towards Drulovic, wearily smiling at the Director's offering of tea.

"Not now, Director," Austin declined.

"Anyway Director, I've dug up some old files on the Ming Project..." Austin continued once the Scatterans were out of the room, "...you remember the Taiyou conflict? The TIB ordered the apprehension of Taiyou intelligence officers within the TNG?" It had been one of Austin's first real assignments. With the help of the Coalition, Austin had managed to capture a prestigious Taiyou agent, as well as a Naginata cruiser.

"Well TIB specialists put together a list when it was all going down," Austin continued, reminding Drulovic of things she knew long before, "The Kokuzoku Files, they named it. It was a list of suspected TNG-Taiyou defectors. Some were mere hunches. Others..." Austin laid the thick stack of papers on the table before Drulovic, "...were prime targets." There was no humor in the agent's voice. The gravity of the situation banished all of Austin's usual optimism and youthful eagerness.

"After you calmed things down with the Taiyou," the agent went on, "TIB officials took the liberty of hiding the Kokuzoku Files. We didn't want to give the Taiyou any reason to continue launch another campaign. In fact, the TIB locked these documents in such dark, hidden databases, that I don't doubt we might have forgotten about them." Austin pointed to many of the names in the files. "Director... many of the most suspected defectors on this list still hold positions in the government. Some in the Bureau."
